Eight hundred years ago, Xie Lian was the Crown Prince of the Xian Le kingdom. He was loved by his citizens and was considered the darling of the world. He ascended to the Heavens at a young age; however, due to unfortunate circumstances, was quickly banished back to the mortal realm. Years later, he ascends again–only to be banished again a few minutes after his ascension.

Now, eight hundred years later, Xie Lian ascends to the Heavens for the third time as the laughing stock among all three realms. On his first task as a god thrice ascended, he meets a mysterious ghost who rules over the ghosts and terrifies the Heavens, yet, unbeknownst to Xie Lian, this ghost king has been paying attention to him for a very, very long time.

MOST UNDERRATED AND MISUNDERSTOOD NOVEL EVER.

Okay, so I've read the reviews for this, and fine, they're entitled to say that this story is not that great. But honestly, I feel sad for those who do not see the beauty of the birth and nurturing of the profound love of the ML for the MC in the two flashback books (Book 2 and Book 4). If you're not moved by that kind of love and devotion, I honestly don't know how you can live happily in your relationships.

For the record, this... more>> is not a boring novel. Sure, it's lengthy. God knows I've spent three days just reading this. But this novel is honestly not boring, especially if you look forward to how did the characters end up as themselves. People who said this is boring are those who are only interested in the ends rather than the means. They don't care how the CP ends up together or even how the ML fell in love with the MC in the first place, they just want to see them together and then do stuff together.

And come on people, if you find the sufferings MC underwent boring and lacks "character development, " this danmei lover prays you find character development after being

thrown at him? Isn't it "character development" that he learned to live like and as a peasant after a life of being a prince who usually has dinner with gold utensils? No? Jeez, what should a man go through for you to deem it as a "character development" then?

AND GOSH, lacks or no plot? Must all the plot be solving mu*der mysteries and epic war stories? You want the plot? Here's the plot:
Spoiler

MC is a god who ascended three times because he wanted to save the common people of his kingdom. MC is a crown prince. ML is a his most devoted believer who loves him to death (literally) and has been stalking him for 800 years (he admits to this) because he loves him so much. It was only after he finds him strong enough (he became Ghost King after dying twice for the MC! Twice!) to protect MC that he started to make his move after finding MC through him ascending the third time. Anyway, so MC is a god, yeah? Even gods have their boss man. So this boss man, yeah? He's the one MC respects the most. Long story short, MC is the the total teacher's pet, with the teacher as the boss man of the gods.

[collapse]
That not plot enough? Go write something better, I dare you.

Anyway, it would take me days just to get off the negative feelings I have after reading all the reviews of the critics. I just don't get why people can enjoy WangXian going to night hunts, and not enjoy HuaLian answering prayers of their believers at the same time.

Last point: We all know they would end up together, people. That is why we read MXTX works. Main pairings get their happy endings! You say that they lack tension, of course they would! They had 800 years of tension, one-sided it may be! They are finally getting to know each other as a person, let them and be voyeurs of how they fall in love (again in ML's case). If you find a healthy relationship who does not have misunderstandings because of how much they trust each other before they pass judgement upon each other boring, then I would enjoy myself in this boring relationship than a toxic one, thank you.

TL;DR: I would defend this novel to death, but I know it is a futile effort. Just read this, and this danmei lover prays you be as romantic as Lan Wangji is and find the relationship of the MC and ML as beautiful and profound as I did.

I rest my case. <<less

I love this story so dang much. The plot is great, the characters and their arcs are interesting, and the romance is so pure. HOB is full of action, mystery, redemption and fluffy love.

Being the pe*vert I am, I was skeptical going into this story knowing there is no explicit yaoi scenes. I was very pleasantly surprised to end up loving this story more than any other BL media I've read in recent times. I highly reccomend this story!

DEFINITELY ONE OF MY FAVORITES!!! READ THIS IF YOU WANT A BREAK FROM A WEAK ASS MC AND r*peY ML
(forgot to leave the stars, I give it 5 stars)
The translator did such an amazing job, thank you so much for your hard work!!

HE HAS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!! The MC went through so much and felt all the emotions he needed to feel, most novels always either portray the MC as a weak willed crybaby who needs the help of the ML to survive or a Mary Sue MC who doesn't even need to lift a finger to destroy his enemies. THIS NOVEL IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT!!!! MC is neither too weak or too strong! He feels emotion such as DEPRESSION which is rare to find in novels. Although he is supposed to be the "saint" type of character you see almost everywhere, he isn't dumb and isn't blindly helping just about everyone.

The ML is your typical obsessed-with-MC-and-only-the-MC type of ML. But the fact that he was following through the MC's hardest times without MC knowing really hit the spot for me. Especially when he said
Spoiler

that the hardest thing to bear is watching your beloved suffer and not being able to do anything

, it was so heart wrenching T-T

I would have been a little happier if the relationship between the 3 friends would have been highlighted a little more though.
Spoiler

I feel like when Mu Qing did those stuff to MC after MC's first banishment, MC should have been a little more upset? But after his third ascension, he treated Mu Qing like nothing happened?

It was a little unsatisfying since I thought there would be more communication between them and it feels like there's a missing part in the whole situation.

HuaLian invented love.

If you're looking for a light read, this ain't it. There is lots of foreshadowing and a big-ass cast of side characters who all contribute to the main story.
You should take your time reading (or re-reading) it, because there is no better feeling than seeing all the plot points, side mentions and small clues finally come together to reveal the big picture.

Absolutely loved it!

I love how the plot interwines and branches off.

I really enjoyed putting the plot together throughout the story, like bits of an easter egg. MXTX leaves so much obvious hints that I'd just go like, okay, I reaaally wanna know why that happened, I wanna know thethe back story !!! I enjoyed it when she writes the missing pieces out. Although they're not too hard to guess, they are fun to read about.

I liked Xie Lian's deduction skills, and Hua Cheng's just a joy to read about. I... more>> loved how XL went through his ordeals, as those are quite common conundrums in every day life (not the exact same situation of course) , and well, tricky ones to manuver around.

It has a good message to bring about, that some troubles really don't have a nice answer, it's common to find ourselves in deadlocks, discrimination, hatred, mistakes. Rich vs poor, ethnic group vs ethnic group, trauma victim (and or abuser) vs trauma victim (and or abuser) etc. And sometimes, there isn't a right nor wrong decision nor party. And that's okay, it's part of life. It's tough to get through, but being an ass is often not the most acceptable response to hardships, as it incites other's scorn, hatred or action (as they wanna live).

I like how their romance played out, and honestly don't mind the lack of explicit smut, as to me, this is not what the story is about. This is a story about XL's journey, and HC's the cream that sweetens it.

Although, XL's has really matured as a person, as he goes through the ordeals, it's bittersweet as if the same situation did occur again like in the past, there may not be a better conclusion, but just a better acceptance and state of mind.

XL sometimes do remind me of a serene grandpa lol, sometimes.

One thing that was unexpected for me as I read the story was how "manly" (stereotypically, don't shoot me!) XL actually is. I expected a soft, adorable, shou, but really, he's also a martial arts fanatic, has quite a temper, can hold his ground etc. Basically he doesn't act cutesy 24/7. He's cute, but from how patient and understanding he is. Sometimes I imagine the him in fanarts and the him I'm reading about and go like.... uh, he should be drawn at least a bit more muscular. >.< <<less

Well that was a roller coaster.

Some may not agree with me, but this book is as good as MXTX's other book, Mo Dao Zu Shi. Some parts, imo, are actually done a bit better in this book.

I feel as though MXTX's writing ability as a whole (as in, writing action sequences, fluidly linking between past and present, etc) has improved- after all, the more you write, the more you improve. The story was cohesive and flowed well. It was perfectly paced, and the switches between past and present were very... more>> well done, altogether improving the reader's experience by making the story more emotionally powerful. The action sequences were written well and were exciting, the sad moments heartbreaking, the fluffy moments adorable. The fact that it was pretty long and still managed to keep my attention is another thing to note (although, the beginning for me was a little slow, but the book got more and more interesting, especially when you really get introduced to the past of the MC).

I absolutely adore the characters. (I have mixed feelings for the main bad guy, especially during the end). Every one of them had a twist, had complications, had different sides, and multiple personalities. Every single one of them has a story, has a reason of why they did or didn't do something. Because that's what people are: a contradiction. They were all relatable in some way. Truly shows how there is no apparent good and bad. Although not perfect, MXTX's ability to character building is truly admirable. To me, this book was actually a bit better in introducing the characters than Mo Dao Zu Shi. Perhaps, it's an advantage of a longer book, but I got comfortable with practically every single character and felt emotionally invested in them. Unlike MDZS, many characters were introduced, and they stayed for a pretty long time/came back (at least, to the point where I wasn't confused about anyone's name... that's always a struggle when reading light novels). I'll admit, sometimes it seemed a bit forced, like the author was trying to include/mention characters during the end, when really they didn't fit in that situation and deserve their own ending. Another thing: I love the ML. But he could have been written in a slightly more 3D way. His motto, his reason for living, his reason for dying, his reason for every single thing, is for the sake of the MC. I understand if you think some of his actions are creepy. To each their own.

Some moments were cheesy, but that's ok. It balanced out with some of the more heartbreaking chapters.

Summary: very cheesy and sappy ending, pretty good action scenes (esp in the end), great characters, lovely/complex MC, cold/cruel but a devoted gentleman to the MC ML, good overall plot w/ twists. Not perfect, but a very enjoyable read. <<less

I apologise to the fans of this novel but I disliked this novel. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of XL x HC but romance aside, this story s**ked balls.

A word of caution to anyone could cannot stand angst, because this novel rated 10 out of 10 in angst meter.

Almost every character with a name in this novel went through Hell before. It was horrible. It was very sad. I cried my eyeballs out at the lower half of the novel. I'm not sure why the author thinks everyone... more>> needs to suffer that much. It was too much. Apart from that, I felt like after the last climax, no one came out as winner as everyone survived while losing a part of them in the middle.

And worst of all, there isn't a chapter of explicit smut at all. None. Nada. <<less

Honestly, it was nice but I really hate the author's habit of flashbacks for ten hundred billion years (hyperbole but still anooyingg). MXTC dedicated 2 volumes to flashbacks. If you are unwilling to suffer through that I would suggest still reading it but skipping the flashbacks because its a waste of time. But if u like crying y not

basicially MC gets abandoned by everyone after he f*cked up the war because he wanted to" save the people". There is a disease and he cant cure it and the people he is trying to protect go against him. In order to cure the disease they must kill someone. Because MC is immortal his people "kill" him to become immune or be cured so he is stabbed hundreds of times. ML is his last follower now that everyone turned against him after the war gets mad at the people and kills them all. MC meets the antagonist gets manipulated into wanted the kill by releasing the disease on the people of the country that defeated his own but backs out cuz some guy on the street showed him kindness, which gives him reason to save the people and suffers again. Honestly dont know why that required two volumes. I was rolling my eyes and skimming so fast. Like we get it MC has hope in humanity despite it f*cking him over again and again, he is forgiving and kind.

[collapse]

other than that it was very nice to read. MC and ML interactions were nice. The plot is really cool and I laughed quite a bit. A very enjoyable read. Though I hate her long drawn out flashbacks- mo dao zu shi rlly started the obsession I swear- still a good read. You could nitpick a lot of things but they arent that bad that it ruins the mood. Not very steamy but who needs it when the story is good. <<less

OK SO EDITING MY REVIEW AFTER FINISHING AND WOW IT ONLY GETS BETTER

Body in the abyss, heart in heaven. This author is honestly incredible. To come up with a novel like this, no words. It's seriously ambitious; all those characters, the plot, but they really deliver. I'd give it 10/5 if I could. Not only is entertainment value high, it really reads like a masterpiece (and of course some of that is thanks to the great work of the translators!!).

IMPORTANT: This is a slow-pace story, and its brilliance comes... more>> in from the author's portrayal of character development, complicated relationships, and interwoven plot & world building. This is important to keep in mind before you start reading. It only gets better, but the beginning can be a bit boring, especially since at first it almost feels aimless.

Nth Edit: I've read a lot of people calling MC's character "boring" because he's too nice. I just want to say MC's character is one of the most incredible I've ever met, and I've never seen character development like his. Just because he's kind and gentle doesn't mean it's the same type of white lotus kindness and gentleness that makes people annoyed sometimes. Here, he's seen the absolute worst sides of the world, and yet he's still willing to be that kind and gentle. He starts off being an ignorant, prideful, golden spoon captain of justice, slowly his heart darkens and gets corroded by hate, before eventually coming to peace with the world and the people. It's incredible and I have no idea what the people giving his character low ratings are thinking (but I will say ML is lacking in comparison, although still worthy of 5stars for sure).

Characters: 5/5

A lot of very interesting characters and relationship histories (everyone). Given the premise of the story, it's inevitable, but it fully delivers even more than you'd think. In the beginning, his relationship with Nan Feng & Fu Yao is really intriguing, and as more people get introduced it only gets better. Seriously, these characters (main & side) are RIDICULOUSLY rich. Like, wow. The character development of pretty much everyone is ridiculous; the author really takes you through the characters' experiences and emotions. Unlike many BL stories, females aren't all vicious and terrible here, and in fact most aren't. I also like that the author isn't afraid to kill off characters, giving the story a sense of realism. Not everyone gets their happy endings and the ones that are the most brilliant are often the ones that have suffered the most as well. The relationships are complex and twisting, just like real ones are. It's amazing watching it unfold.

This is one of my fav MC/ML dynamics (just like the other works by this author that I've read so far...). The ML is protective and caring, but lets the MC do their own thing and doesn't try to trap or make decisions for him. As their history get revealed piece by piece, it's just a beautiful thing. The entire story is very refined and clearly required a lot of masterful planning. I will say that I wish ML was slightly less troupe-y in that he would care about things other than ML too. (Also, although it's very clearly BL, it stops at the kiss and only eludes to more at the very end)

My biggest complaint would probably be how MC is still very much under ML's shadow, even though he's so impressive and strong on his own. Especially as an immortal!! He definitely rivals the Heavenly Emperor in his prime (even when he had no believers?? plot hole), so why do people still think of his as a misfortunate Scrap Immortal and why doesn't he have more work to do?? I get it's funny, but still, there should be some exaltation! Especially since the cursed chain came off, so all his fortune returned. BUT don't let this stop you from reading the story, because the story is still very good even if you hate these troupes.

Spoiler

Small thing but I wish there was a deeper meaning behind the name San Lang... maybe there is and I missed it???

[collapse]

Plot: 5/5

A very interesting and unusual premise and the story only gets better as you go. The world is crazy flavourful, and the plot is riveting. Seriously, this will be the cause of many long nights & late assignments (but it's worth it). It does start off slowly, but very intriguing, and it really lives up to its premise. With a first chapter like that, it's really worrying if the rest of the story will hold up, but trust me it seriously does.

And I love that EVERYTHING pretty much comes back full circle. Sure, there's a lot of long flashbacks, but I found them all critical and expertly placed (where it doesn't feel like it's explaining for plot holes but rather used to develop the story in the long run). That's where we see lot of the nitty gritty of humanity. It's also pretty humorous; at times, especially later on with the Generals, I was seriously laughing out loud. Fully owning up to crying at times as well.

Spoiler

Tbh I kinda wish his Generals knew about what he went through in that Crown Prince Temple before Fang Xin became "his", at least somewhat. I just think it was such an important part of his experiences that I wish they knew and understood, and also empathizing with how he behaved afterwards.

[collapse]

Writing / Translation: 5/5

Thank you SO much for everyone's hard work!!! Great translations all around. Oh man, I was so shocked when I came back after 4 months to find a MASSIVE upload; talk about a meat pie from heaven. I thought this story would take years before completion, especially with such long chapters.

I'm so excited about the visual adaptations..... and here's to hoping for more extras!!

Spoiler

Would love to see what happened to Shi Quanxian, and the story of Ling Wen. Poor Quan Yizhen... I hoped he'd get his HE. Shipping General Pei x Rain Master! And by shipping, I mean him being a lovesick lil puppy with the dense RM and suffering like all his ladies went through haha. Also, I thought heavenly officials' corpses had to be taken care of with special care, like what Black Water did?? The later ones kinda get forgotten lmao. Also, stories about what happened between his second & third ascension.. how could ML and he have been apart for so long??? plot hole..

I'm gonna be honest; I get bored easily. Sometimes when I'm reading a novel I push myself to continue for at least 10 more chapters until I get to an exciting part, if there is one. But with TGCF, I didn't need to push myself that much. On the contrary, I had to push myself to stop, as I was reading for hours everyday. Honestly, some parts gave me that pang in the heart that really hurts but I love it. It was also very slowburn, just like most Chinese... more>> danmei, but I like it slow. Mo Xiang Tongxiu is a wonderful writer. She is creative and talented. I have read all of her works, and they are all beautifully written and interesting. Heaven Official's Blessing isn't an exception either. It has a gripping and interesting plot, and the pace of story telling is just perfect—neither too fast nor too slow. Every arc is so trilling and riveting. It is hard to describe the plot; it is pretty complicated, but if we simplify things, it is about true love and belief. Yes, it is long, but... more>> worth every second spent reading it. There are scenes that make you lough, make your heart warm, and also scenes that make you boil with anger or make you heartbroken. But at the end of the day, it is a touching, romantic, and brilliant story.

The characters in this novel are so good. They are not perfect, but they are peculiar, strange, and lovely. Even those characters who you want to choke to death from time to time, you can't help but love. They are well-rounded and make the story so much more exciting.

I would like to describe MC and ML, but their character growth is too big. Especially for MC Xie Lian. What I like about him is that he has a gentle character. Sometimes it seems that he can be easily bullied, but actually he has firm character and can't be influenced by others opinions. He will stick to his beliefs and act as he sees fit. He went through hell, but he is still kind and true to himself. I adore ML-Hua Cheng too. Mostly, he is sassy and sarcastic, but in front of MC, he becomes so obedient that it is funny. Most of all, I love that what he feels for MC is pure and true love. His respect and love for MC are unique; he isn't overbearing, and even when he is against something, he still lets MC do it and accompanies and protects him silently. His belief in MC surpasses everything. He believes in MC more than Xie Lian himself does. It is different from the selfish, violent, and toxic kind of love that we often see in modern novels. Don't get me wrong, those kinds of love stories can also be good, and not every love is perfect; humans are too complicated, and every kind of love has the right to exist and be told. It's just that Hua Cheng is too special and unique.

The relationship between characters in this novel is complicated. In the author's world, there is no black-and-white. People will surprise you and disappoint you. But everyone has many layers and can't be simply labelled as good or bad. A demon can be noble, honourable, and good. At the same time, God can be untrustworthy, savage, greedy, and scary. The character may seem dishonourable and cunning, but he may surprise you with his actions. Everybody has good and bad sides. What I like about this story is that it will make you believe in humans and also make you hate them. It shows the true nature of mankind. It is fiction, but sadly, even in real life, humans tend to act selfishly and forget the kindness that they once received.

This story is truly worth reading and rereading. It is so well-written. It is full of small details that seem insignificant, but at some point in the story, they pile up and become incredibly heartwarming. The story is meticulously built. Even when you read it a second time, you enjoy it because knowing the ending doesn't spoil anything. On the contrary, you pay more attention to details that, at first glance, seemed insignificant, but after knowing the whole story, they become so important and romantic. I'm always reluctant to say goodbye to those characters, even though this isn't my first time reading it. I love this story wholeheartedly and will recommend it with a clean conscience. <<less

I had long forgotten the context of this novel for the longest time after finishing it, but before the official English translations this novel broke me back in 2020. I still recall the moments when people discovered this novel, as the English translations from Seven Seas have finally been completed, makes me feel so nostalgic over this series again with Hua Cheng and Xie Lian's ending.

Simply put, if you have the money to buy the official translations of this novel go ahead. It is worth the money, although we aren't so sure how MXTX is doing right now, as she's been on a break from us for over 4 years now, hopefully she knows how much her novels have been recognized throughout the years T^T

I haven't finished the novel yet since I'm reading the official translation. But I don't think my opinion will change much.

I love this novel! Hua Cheng and Xie Lian's relationship is so beautiful! They made me cry a lot

The supporting characters are very likeable. Most of them.

My only issue are Xie Lian's good-for-nothing parents. They were just a burden tbh.

Beautiful! After watching Mo dao zu shi, I watched Tian Guan ci fu donghua, which fascinated me. The dynamic between them made me see everything in a rosy light, that's why I went for the novel.
What to say? A masterpiece, Xie Lian is a great character, my favourite so far. Hua Cheng is perfection in seduction, understanding and loyalty.
The story is fascinating, you start with a smile on your face and then you start to cry with pain, suffering, emotion and happiness.
I definitely recommend it to everyone.

I originally read this book as a teenager after completing the author’s second work, Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation. I knew from the moment I completed this 2000+ page monster (fan translated) that I was so head over heels in love with the story that I was left feeling empty for weeks upon finishing it. Currently, I’m rereading it (the official translation) to regain that sense of love I initially felt for the story.
Is this book flawless? No, and this is especially evident after rereading it as an adult.
This book is very slow burn and isn’t for the faint of heart due to its size alone. Its plot points, while always entertaining in my opinion, don’t always come across as necessary in the development of the story. It has long flashback scenes (can last for hundreds of pages) that some may find tedious.
With all this being said, I still love this story, and it will go down as one of my favorite tales of all time. We can agree to disagree here, but I actually thought the character development of the MC was fleshed out nicely, and while the ML didn’t get nearly as much development, I still felt that, as a reader, it was simple to understand his eternal faith in the MC.

Imagine being beaten and treated as worthless your whole life, and suddenly someone offers you kindness after kindness every time you encounter them. How could you not feel completely devoted to that person? Especially when you seen this person retain their kindness despite hardship after hardship. I thought it was a beautiful parallel in the story that while the MC was the only one who believed in the ML, 800 years later, the ML is the only person who is incredibly devout to the MC

.

On the second reread, I found the MC’s past even more tragic than on my first read, perhaps because I was able to find much more fault with the character.
Spoiler

While the MC constantly defied the Heavens and failed to realize he couldn’t possible save everyone, at the end of his first flashback when everything was falling apart in the Kingdom, and all he wished was that someone would save him and he could crawl into his mothers arms like a child and cry, it hurt like hell.

The ending was beautifully done and I still get literal chills rereading the lines.
Spoiler

Last time, they spent eight hundred years running towards each other.
This time, it only took an instant to fall into each other’s embrace.

Stop cutting onions, Author!

If you made it to the end of this post, thank you sincerely. Overall, if you are willing to slowly digest these (if you rush, I PROMISE the experience will not be as wonderful. TRUST ME. Rereading these books extremely quickly made me slightly doubt the magic of these books before I finally slowed my pace and savored it) and are okay with a slow burn, it’s truly an amazing story about learning to trust yourself and having faith in the ones you love.

Overall, this is a really good story with some great characters and really interesting exploration of themes.

What I Liked:

    • The characters, especially the main ones, are very engaging and instantly captivating. MXTX is an absolute master at writing memorable and well defined characters and this book is no exception. You learn to sympathize and admire Xie Lian, Swoon and wish you had a boyfriend like Hua Cheng, and fear and pity the main villain (who I must admit was my favorite part of the novel, by far one of the best villains I've ever come across in fiction).
    • The romance was also beautifully written. As someone pretty obsessive who tends to revolve my entire personality around the things I love (like my favorite fictional characters *ahem*) I really appreciate how MXTX showed that this kind of mentality/personality doesn't have to be a negative thing, unlike the usual perception. Yes Hua Cheng is utterly devoted to Xie Lian but it isn't blind devotion nor does he feel any sense of entitlement towards Xie Lian. He just simply wants to see the person who inspired him so much be as loved/cherished as he can.
    • The themes of the story are also very interesting, and symbolized and conveyed in beautiful ways. Themes of masks, face/reputation, devotion, recovering and incorporating trauma, and so on. Essays could be written about those.
    • The final 1/3rd of the novel is the best part of the novel by far, and the ending beautifully tied up the thematic and (most of) the plot threads, which I'm starting to realize is a rarity in danmei and web novels in general. also the final battle is absolutely epic and deserves a high budget animated adaptation.
What I didn't like:

    • Even though he is a really well written and memorable character, I do feel like compared to the amount of screen time he had there wasn't enough development for Hua Cheng. His motivations and reasons for worshipping Xie Lian are mentioned, but aren't given enough of a focus compared to how much of a significant role those play into the romance and the overall story. His backstory is also glossed over (MXTX even mentioned intentionally deleting some significant parts of it because she felt it "wasn't that important"), which I personally think is a huge shame. I'm aware that part of this is just how MXTX writes her male leads from a certain distance but compared to how she wrote Lan Wangji from MDZS for example (where there was much more of a focus on those elements), I feel like in this case the balance just wasn't that good.
    • Even though the story ended on a high note (and the last 1/3rd or so was by far the best part) I felt like for the majority of the story, the pacing was a bit off. the first flashback was way too long (I think it would've benefited from being cut in half with the second half being placed halfway through the novel). a lot of the side plots took too much space and even if they tied to the story very well thematically there wasn't much tying them plot wise. some side plots were left unresolved and some characters who were at first given a lot of focus practically disappeared from the story once their side arc ended. even the excellently written ones (such as black water arc) didn't have much significance plot wise and so felt really disjointed and like a d-tour.
    • I really have to reserve an entire point to the banyue arc here because everything there was just... not good. Even without the racism inherent to it, the ultimate conclusion the story and the characters come to at the end of it contradicts many of the core themes and messages of the novel and left a really bitter taste in my mouth. the only reason it didn't significantly spoil my enjoyment of the novel overall was because it was the first arc, so it isn't that fresh in my mind.
overall this is a really good story (albeit with some flaws), as expected from a brilliant writer such as MXTX. and thankfully most of the flaws I described are likely to be fixed at least in part by the rewrites, as what happened with MDZS. 8/10 from me so definitely recommended!

omg this novel is so so good fr fr !!!

first of all every character including MC, ML and side characters, the all have a background and this is also explained in detail, which adds extra points for the novel !!

for the story, its really amazing how each and everything is so connected and relating to each other.

... more>> every emotions and feelings are also in great detail

i also like how some of the serious scenes are interwoven with comedy with which sometimes I laughed while crying lmao

as for the MC and ml, there's no need to explain, they are awesome. I really liked the faith and trust between them. I wont say much or it will be a spoiler
