The first time they met, he was a downtrodden prince everybody bullied whilst she was a small palace maid responsible for washing the clothes of the people in the palace.

Twenty years of companionship; he is the only one capable of influencing her emotions. For him, she is willing to immerse her hands in the blood of others, to help him rule this world.

Even though she wasn’t the one he loved, and she wasn’t the one he married, she insisted on remaining by his side, aiming to become the one and only woman capable of standing by his side whilst he held court and the one and only woman in his harem – even if doing so would cause her to get insulted by the entire world.

However, that person whom she loved so much, that person for whom she committed all sorts of preposterous acts for – wanted her to die.

He said, “In this lifetime, I don’t wish to see you ever again!”

She returned to him as a spirit, yet he begged for another lifetime together.

“If we have another lifetime together, I want you to love me and respect me from a very young age, and help me clear all the obstacles standing in my way. You would be forced to watch me love one, and marry another – but both of them would not be you. You must love me so crazily and so deeply that everybody knows about it, and yet you would never be able to truly receive my entire love and affection. On innumerable occasions, you would be misunderstood by me, and hurt by me. The only few tears you shed in your entire lifetime would be for me, and ultimately you would have to die for me. Even after you die, you would not be allowed to rest in peace – instead, you would transform into a spirit and return to my side… Only if you do all these, would you be able to compensate me for what I have done in this lifetime.”

The pain is real. I saw a few ppl think the flashbacks are too long or smth, which I don't feel is the case.

A story about the way over focusing on a single event which occurred in the past, can make you disregard decades of companionship and devotion, how much enshrining a person can harm all involved. Written mostly from MC's POV while some flashbacks are ML focused and function on the information and behavior he had at the time. It ends as MC's soul scatters so we can only... more>> guess how things unfolded after.

Recc if you in the mood for heart crushing.

Find a different site to read the first 19ch as the one linked is dead, the translation is good but the spelling of the names changes when the translator changes. <<less

You know, I may be late but this is truly a good (short) story. At first, I thought the flashbacks were too long but then I realized those flashbacks were necessary in breaking my heart specially for the last chapter.

LSZ and GHJ's love story is so beautiful yet heartbreaking. I really wanna get mad at the ML at first but if I were in his shoes, a young boy with no one else and suddenly someone genuinely took care of me in a place I considered dangerous, I would also not forget that person and perhaps would have some affections for her (although he got the wrong person) I still understand him. He realized with Lady Zou's fake death, who he truly loves but everything's too late because GHJ wouldn't believe him after everything (plus the mistaken gratitude and affection he had for Lady Zou.) Seriously they're just two people who got played by fate. I would love to read their stories in their next life but with different love interest, well at least for GHJ. I like LSZ but I just think GHJ got hurt so much bcz of him.

A short read that'll crush your heart and make you cry.

The first several chapters are a slog, with a ton of unnecessary government ministers and introductions, but you will sob like a faucet straight through the last 6.

What I like most is that it's not a single misunderstanding, but a build up of years. Both parties act badly, letting their pride get in the way of cherishing the other person. Until it is too late, and they have no more chances to be honest and they've earned their tragedy.

The characters... more>> feel very rich and complex. I could see a real couple behaving this way.

The main character is an atypical female lead, in that she does not act cute, or dream of babies and being empress. She is brusque, masculine, and downright chafing to most people. But she truly doesn't care what most people think of her, and she doesn't change or transform into a feminine ideal, even though her life would be easier if she did and she's offered the option.

For all his stubborn, arrogant faults, the emperor genuinely accepts her as she is, in all her tsundere tomboy glory, and supports her career ambitions. Most of the side characters also, miraculously, recognize that she is a good person through the blunt manners and snarky quips, instead of judging her solely on appearance. Do you have any idea how refreshing it is to read something that doesn't go on and on about how "tender" and constantly frightened the pale dumpling of a female lead is?? She has scars and flaws and isn't some miraculous, entrancing beauty, which is such a nice change, you may want to read it just for that.

Definitely have a box of tissues at hand while reading. <<less

Its painfully good. I’m reading this with the feeling of something heavy stuck in my chest. It was painfully sad, the type of sadness that is so frustrating. You can’t cry, just awfully stuck in your chest.

I hate this. Because it’s too good. But painfully good. Ugh I'm conflicting my self.

Pain, only pain. I love how the author approach the story, a proper way to deliver such a good story line. If you have come here for something to dry your eyes, to poke your heart and cut your throat, you have come to the right place.

I think that I love how their misunderstanding is not born out of miscommunication but rather their pride and stubbornness with each other. Thus, making the story bearable and it keeps you going from chapter to chapter to just wait how ML would react to FL death as if you shares the same memory and pain as FL.

Overall, an awesome and a one heart wrenching pieces. If you want something similar than this go for ‘One Night, One Day, One Year, One Lifetime’, ‘Mulberry Song’, ‘Our Second Master’. Enjoy reading (and weeping too). <<less

I binged this novel and bawled a lot. I remember that I fell asleep at like, 4 AM, because not only did I have to finish it I had to recoup my feelings. I loved it though. When you think too deeply about it, it is kind of preposterous how things turned out as well as how things would've been completely different had there just been a chance to communicate their feelings. The frustration is part of the experience, I would say. (But hey, I'm a sucker for pain.)

not gonna lie I cried while sobbing reading the few last chapters. I personally think that the female lead deserves better.

She has done everything the male lead asked her to but the ML is simply blinded by his own conclusion which ended up hurting the FL more.

also I really hate the ML and that bit*h zou ning yan. Only if she or the ML asked about the past (regarding the soup incident) the biggest yet simplest misunderstanding must be resolved by then.

but overall, I think the ending is just acceptable and justified. The FL can at least be free from the chain of her unrequited love. <<less

I don't know what to say. It's absolutely beautiful. I actually wanted more. Or an alternate happier ending. But then again, it was a beautiful way to end. I can't say I hate the ML, he's a bit dumb because of the whole moonlight lover thing, but I could see that he loved her. Even though none of them knew it. And it sucks. I really hate tragedy or angst, but this one was just... so nice. I teared up here and there, but I just straight out bawled when... more>> she said "I love you". Still, this is a beautiful piece, it's moving, it's not dramatic, it's just nice. <<less

Its okay, it doesn't hurt, I just made a scenario that GHJ actually was just in a coma and LSZ came and get her and they lived happily ever after. Yes. That's it.

Remarkable and brilliant. Will make you feel a roller coaster of emotions, and even though you have an idea what’s coming the ending is just beautiful in the last couple of chapters the way the author organized the scenes. I bawled my eyes out for sure. It’s always these angsty, tragic yet emotional stories that I love to read because they invoke in me this raw, powerful sadness that reminds me I’m human. Somehow it’s cathartic. And it takes a masterfully written piece to elicit that response from me -... more>> this novel certainly achieves that. 5/5 stars. Extra props to the translators for capturing that in English. <<less

One word, angst.

Read this if you want to read an angsty, tear-jerking, full-of-misunderstandings short novel. I really enjoyed it and I will definitely read it again.

The author's and the translator's mastery over imagery and painting vivid and realistic characters made this novel all the more captivating and enthralling.

I cried a lot in the ending... huhuhu. I just hate how helpless I felt when I read it because this kind of plot actually happens in real life and they captured it, the feeling of giving your all for that person you love and the willingness to sacrifice your everything for them as you wait silently to be noticed.

I also like how the ending was made, it was soooo heart breaking ahahhaha

Overall, good read when you want to bawl and feel sad.

I love this bittersweet novel. I hope they have a happy ending in their next life. They truly loved each other in their own ways but misunderstanding is the root cause of all this tragedy.

I also like the supporting males (Zuo Ning Hao and Zhao Yuan Yuan) who always antagonized the MC, but after her death, she realized that they valued her that they cried for her. I think they liked/loved her as woman.

Unlike other readers, I understand both leads and their angst even their misunderstandings. The emperor despite having... more>> deep feeling of love to MC... his childish dream of admiration to the other girl made him blinsided and only reliazed it too late... however, you can't fault him bc he thought that his dream girl was the first person who cared for him that the incident was imprinted in his heart making him motivated to dream more and get the throne.

Unfortunately, he admired the wrong person by mistake and his dream was fake.

PS: I love to read a rebirth story of ML getting his 2nd chance to prove his love to FL. <<less

This bitter sweet story really made my heart heavy.

The story was focused on the past memories of the MC which made me somehow bored as I was excited for the next lifetime of them described by the synopsis that the ML will be the next one to suffer. Somehow vengeful but serves him right. From those flashbacks, I get to connect and relate to the MC and became biased as I took her side :P

Anyways, all the misunderstanding irks me but it made the story beautifully tragic. So would I... more>> recommend it? Of course! 5/5 <3 <<less

Very angsty read!

I enjoyed it because it was a good short break from other historical novels.

A very refreshing MC/female lead who is very different from typical female MCs found in other C-novels along with a childhood love/romance which is pretty rare as well. I cried my eyes out for sure!

The translation is excellent.

Spoiler

I wish there were more epilogues or a HEA but the ending was very impactful and fit well.

A bittersweet story of loyalty/love and fate. If you’re in the mood for that, this is a rather lovely read especially when it’s easy to read at 25+1 chapters.

The summary caught my attention and I knew this was a tragedy, which I usually avoid. I read the first translated part and only read the last few chapters in Chinese. I would say I like Mulberry Song more, which is quite alike as both MC souls were tied to the ML and seeking to be released.

In this story, I felt the ending was too abrupt, I would like to see more development on how the MC repent and not just asking for forgiveness. Not strong enough for me to... more>> read the entire story. <<less

Enjoyable novel that is about the MC's life as a ghost as she lingers by the side of the King. You could really feel the emotions in this novel as we see the world through her eyes and how she came to be by the King's side.

Can't wait to read what happens next, will he finally feel regret? Gah.
