All Chu Lian had done was to read a book where the female lead had cheated on her wonderful husband. While wondering why, before she knew it, she was waking up in the body of that very same female lead!

Wait, did that mean the handsome husband from the book was hers now? Chu Lian decided to welcome him with open arms!

However, what she got wasn’t the kind husband she had been expecting. Instead, his personality seemed to have been completely flipped! He left her all alone on their wedding night… and just five days into their marriage, her dear husband abandoned his loving wife and left to enlist in the army!

Fine! Be that way! She could pass her days perfectly well somehow, even if she had to do it alone!

Chu Lian put her household in order, charmed the rest of her new family, and did a little business on the side. She even opened up some new trade routes! Her days passed peacefully and leisurely… Until her dear husband got into trouble at the frontline of the war.

Hmph, isn’t he crawling back to me for help in the end? Forget it, I’ll go save him myself!

Pretty good for a BG. Does ML bully FL at first? Yeah, he thinks she's still the same soul that pushed him to his death. Does ML ever do anything unforgivable? Nope. After several chapters, you can see ML slowly warming up to the FL and ML cares about her a lot. I'm not saying ML is perfect, but typically in a FL likes the ML first (later... who knows who likes who more hehe) this is what happens.

Translation is also pretty good.

-1 because there were some plots that pretty... more>> much side tracked the story and really unnecessary chapters & characters (I think the author was trying to make the novel as long as possible or something).

Spoiler

for example... was it really necessary to bring the original soul back? why not just have FL tell ML the truth...

[collapse]

My advice is to skip any chapters that have nothing to do with the main plot if you find them annoying (like I did) because once you finish you realize they really had nothing to do with the overall plot development... <<less

meh.

Boring, and for once I would have prefered the MC to be good with something like medicine as a main field and not focus on food; it brings irrealistic scenes and tasteless jokes.

Now let's talk about the ml, we gradually see him falling for her, but the key moments are either related to her body or food.

... more>> BUT most importantly there is NO satisfying scenes, even the "face-slapping" isn't that satisfying.

The story just keeps getting dragged over meanignless things, although I guess they have the tag "slice of life" to justify it, but even so, slice of life doesn't mean boring.

The actions of the ML on their wedding night are undoubtedly disgusting and unacceptable for modern people, but the MC still somehow paint him as a better guy than original ML while she didn't read the other half of the story.

Another weird fact is that the MC isn't disturbed by her sudden transmigration, but is more preoccupied and affected or terrified by the ML actions on the wedding and the assassinatin attempt. In fact she starts wondering about the ml's behavior rather than her transmigration; unless she was prepared in advance and transmigrated willingly. But even so, it suggests a calm attitude and good adaptability that even an assassin may not have, but for the sake of the plot, this same attitude doesn't correlate with the MC. <<less

It’s pretty good and ML is better than other mls but that don’t mean he the greatest either. Sometimes he forces his wife in some actions but generally he is a kind and loving man. Ending was kinda really rushed. Wished we had more story on her son, princess Duanjia and he Erlang, Prince hin and sima hui, like their backstories or lik extras or omakes mannn cuz we got absolutely nothing and it was disappointing. The emperor thing was kind of like ehhh. But overall a decent novel. Like 3-4/5 stars. Another pint to make that a commenter. Had made was that they got very close and developed an intimate relationship, but were still suuuuper feicken shy with each other like wtf. Y’all married. Stop being chicken shits and it was annoying at times. Like even when they be doin the lovey dicey like why is the dude always tryna force a lil something and why she so dam shy about it like seriously and can’t there be better descriptions for her like it’s always like “her beautiful watery eyes” or “soft lumps on her chest” or fricken “her pert lik ass” this descriptions was constantly recycled over and over and I was like, author, girl, I love you, but pls be more original goddammit.

My fave scene was when she wondered why her newborn son was so ugly I loled. Maybe cuz my mom thought the exact same thing. She even told me while laughing ??

The protagonist is boring, ML is not charming, the villains don't have convenient motivations.

It would be ok if the story were short, but it's not the case.

Repetitive, tiring, not surprising

I can't believe that I have not left a review of this novel, I followed each update uploaded, until in a moment I read the raw because I can not stand the desire to know what was happening. Although our MC pretends to do nothing, always ends up doing many things XD every time I read this novel I wanted to eat is that Chu Lian tortures us with his creations: c until he tortured her husband and managed to win her heart ♥ this The novel brought me a... more>> lot of laughter for the interactions of the protagonists, and I was also sad because there were many misunderstandings between them and they did not speak because they were both stubborn, the good thing is that it has a happy ending and is highly recommended ♥ <<less

An amazing series through and through. While there were some time skips (namely towards the end) that didn’t seem necessary and made it feel a little rushed to its completion, overall the pacing was great. Needless to say everything else about the story was wonderful, even though you’d feel frustrated at times due to either the actions of the characters (which were very human, not the perfect Mary Sue/Gary Stu bs) or the depictions of food making you hungry.

But really... everyone ends up a foodie after reading.

This is one of my favorite novels! The female main character is so nice and mature, and her husband is paranoid, so funny! It's a remarkable novel for me.

The flow of the story is nice and easy to follow. The story itself is unique. However what I cannot follow is some items did not match with history (I know this is a novel but still!). Like the food, raindrop mochi (where they could find agar at that time?)

But overall this one is quite nice to read... no classic revenge plot or battling within the harems. Reccommend it for people who likes gourmet as sub plot

I expected more.

But let's start with bullet points.

The good points, you will like it

  • If you are into food stories (not quite enough to be food-p*rn either)
  • If you are new into the transmigration genre or
  • like a twist of reincarnation and transmigration
The negative points, from lacking to terrible execution:

  • ML got off so easy
    Spoiler

He did not physically mistreat her, but he did not treat her with respect either and although it is understandle from his side, I, as a reader still wished that she would have given him more to suffer

    [collapse]
Sorry to disappoint if you were looking forward to that.
  • Satisfying ending of villains
    Spoiler

Everything was resolved within one chapter, villains died, but the reader never got a satisfying ending. WE never got to see the regrets of the antagonists in their last moment, or their last thoughts. Instead there was only one sentence.

    [collapse]
  • So many lost potentials
    Spoiler

What happened between the emperor and the fMC?

    [collapse]
  • No grand finale
    Spoiler

Most of all, the anticipated moment when the truth is revealed was an absolute lackluster. They did not even talk about it, it just happened and they may or may not know, but who knows?!

    [collapse]
Overall, I am a little disappointed with the novel. It had a lot of potentials and I love the translator, but it had a wonderful opportunity to be great. But in the end, the novel never got me, despite a few good moments, because they didn't really give me what I wanted as a reader or needed to get me excited. It was all, meh.

I expected more.

First Half - 5 stars

Second Half - 3 stars

This story has a lot of potential and seemed really promising. I like the MC and the ML. On the first half.

On the second half, it was rushed. It's a pity.

Spoiler

ML became very unreasonable. I used to like him, tch.

[collapse]

AND the ending is just like a rundown on what was to happen. No rising and falling action. Just plain narration.

I really like the first half of the novel. I would give 5/5 stars for that. However, as believer of equality and mutual consent, the latter half of the story dropped it to 1/5 stars for me.

pro:

+strong, sensible, level-headed, not over powered, business minded female lead

+lots of food! (wish there were more lol like she could've given out some recipes at the army camp for the soldiers)

+an endearingly stubborn awkward idiot of a male lead

+I like the business side of it all

+so many foodies lol

con:

Spoiler

-the last 50 or so chapters were rushed. there were more that could have been explored.

-COMMUNICATION! WHERE IS IT?

-Why is the female lead always have to be understanding and give way to the male lead? If the friends don't help ML explain the misunderstandings to FL, will he never explain anything to her? geezus!

-shameless male lead! s*xual assaults & manhandling is a huge turn off

-Especially, that nourishing soup! That got me boiling mad! How is that soup any different from drugging the girl without her permission or knowledge?

-female lead is too compliant with male lead (as a modern person, she could speak up too if the ML is being an idiot. don't leave it up him!)

[collapse]

So, the starting was great. The middle to end was... terrible. <<less

Honestly, I expected more from this premise.

Characters: 3.5/5

ML is too straightforward / s*upid, he's so obvious with his hate but I wish he was more of a schemer. Like pretending to still treat MC well and hiding his hate, while secretly monitoring her etc. That way, it go better on her side too; she would just have a "feeling" something is off, but not know anything for sure. And then they can slowly progress their relationship and turn it real.

I like that MC is lazy lol cause that feels so... more>> relatable. Not sure about historical circumstances but how could they actually not use any spices?? Like I have a really hard time believing they were THAT impressed by all of MC's techniques. Recipes maybe, but simpler things like using fatty meat as oil they should know already. If the era really ate very light, then MC's food would make them feel it's too salty and rich right?

I don't like that she's always so forgiving of ML though. Like yes he has his own circumstances, and it felt really good when she ranted to him, but siiiigh he was a real jerk.

Side characters were all pretty interesting. Coupling was too obvious, but as expected of the era I guess.

Plot: 5/5

At the last chapter, the ending wrapped up super quick. I feel like xiao dude's background and where he got all his assets from was never really explained though. Also the story built intrigue between MC's bio father and the Pan house, but they never explained it. Furthermore, Madam Zou got off waaaay too easily, everyone else has a pitiful death but her???

Developments themselves I have no complaints.

Writing / Translation: 5/5

No complaints. <<less

Honestly those two stars are only due to the first part of the books and the awesome FL. She's independent, has a great sense for business and FOOD. It's always funny to see how all the characters crave her food and slowly turn into gluttons XD

However the moment the FL meets the ML again it just goes downhills and when the FL decides that she is going to love the ML that's when the story just fell down the cliff for me.

The ML was what made me dislike the novel... more>> the most. At first he's just s*upid, unwillig to realize that the FL has changed. Then, all of a sudden, he sees the FL as his possession and he seems to only want s*x with her. And worst of all, the FL obliges.

Also, the story contains almost no characters, who don't go against the FL at some part, mostly due to their s*upidity. This goes to the point that it's kind of absurd.

Hence I can't really recommend the whole story, just the first part. The remaining is just too painful to read. <<less

The MC, an apparently transmigrated modern woman who’s ‘clever’ and ‘won’t let anyone bully her’, brushes off the fact she’s being DRUGGED with an aphrodisiac secretly, with every person she trusts most aware of it.

She accepts the fact her husband tried to strangle her to death on her wedding night and just does nothing about it, barely holding a grudge.

Her partner is cold and abusive and prone to forcing violence upon her if he doesn’t get what he wants, and she’s just okay with that. Cause she loves him.

I kept... more>> reading cause I was hoping things were getting better but I really cannot forgive the fact she was DRUGGED AND r*peD and just doesn’t care. <<less

Everyone already talked about their feelings about the main couple which is pretty much the same as my opinion but I'm going to talk about what I wished the author did 0r atleast made an explanation! About the Emperor:

Spoiler

Author literally made detailed writing on food but not the Emperors'? Like Author just made a brief narration of the Emperor and his woman which is what actually resulted this whole fiasco apparently about why the main antagonist he's so adamant on getting revenge in the first place ! Because apparently the antagonist's dad and Emperor liked the same woman! Bros before hoes/ jk. I would've find it more intriguing to read about the Emperor's and his lady's interactions and why were they not together and why was she forced to marry someone else under his nose and stuff than the cold war between the MC's and ML's which is in my opinion was just really just.. Sad. It's like 14 chapters in total.

Ending was rushed. Like super rushed. It was just summarize of what happened the next years. No epilouge or short stories. Wish there was some for the maids : (
[collapse]

Done ranting- lol, anyways its nice story overall. If you like s*upid interactions its a nice cup of tea. ML is just too traumatized by past life thats why he's cold as stone but who knows :^)

Alright. This novel. From the title... I actually bookmarked it a few months before I actually read it because I got intimidated by the title, silly right? HAHAH I just. Even from the title that I can imagine the FL isn't gonna have a good time and then I read the intro and I was reluctant to start reading it until one day I ran out of things to read and be like why not?

And as I expected, our beloved FL really have a bad time with the ML for... more>> a very long time and I was a bit upset with the ML over it but not for long because he kinda makes it up throughout the rest of the story... I think.... but at least the way he redeem himself with her are forgivable, I guess... because he has all the reason to resent her at first so whoosh. its fine.

BUT. BUT. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! one thing I strongly against is how the ending seems rush like, the story is already long enough, it doesnt hurt to make it longer just to make the ending better bc the ending here is like it has boarded a super fast express train and derailed off the track and it flew off to the sun. seriously.... I personally liked the ending a lot but if its not rushed so much, this novel probably will have a no 1 place in my heart replacing rebirth of malicious empress so yeah.

Good read and keeps you at the edge too!! Kudos to translator and loves everything about the foods in there btw!!! <<less

This novel was ok. Since anything else I say here would be somewhat spoiler-ish, I'll throw the rest in a spoiler.

Setting:2/5

Story happens in a fictional dynasty in a book that the main character was reading. Apparently, in this dynasty, food culture is rather poorly-developed. Lo and behold, the protagonist turns out to be a modern foodie who knows tons of recipes and cooking techniques. If it wasn't for the relationship drama, I would say that this novel's genre should have been 'Shoujo' rather than 'Josei'.

Plot:2/5

Not a lot of plot development, most of the story was about food, and using said food to make all kinds of political and business contacts. It did have a nice mystery theme with regards to Chu Lian's body's hidden identity, though.

Characters:3/5

Nice character personalities with decent character development. It nicely portrayed a vengeful and emotionally-injured male lead overcoming his suspicions of his wife in this life, due to "her" actions in his previous one. Then there's the gluttonous, kitten-like Chu Lian, who just wants to be a like a hibernating bear and alternate between eating and sleeping. She gets dragged into the political arena due to a stalkerish childhood sweetheart who won't let go and her excellent cooking skills.

Comedy:5/5

Plenty of funny scenes in the novel, whether it be the ML's paranoid overthinking of Chu Lian's actions, the face-slapping of "secret recipe" owners, when their recipes don't match up, or just the sheer hilarity of all of the stoic, stern officials fighting over food.

I give this a 4. Overall beginning 340 chapters were pretty interesting. Overall since this is complete I'd say give it a shot and read until bored. The plot feels both slow and rushed at the same time. You get like 670 slice of life chapters, first 300 of those are interesting because there's still stuff at stake, other are less interesting. And like 3o chapters where author jams like all the plot into. I recommend it, though I'm not satisfied with some of the stuff. I like the translation.... more>> <<less

It's quite a cute story to read, but nerve wracking tbh! There is quite a lot useless drama between the main leads and the romantic development is (in my opinion) too fast and sudden. Like somehow there is NO basic understanding between the couple at all and just a tiny bit trust, almost none at all.

The ending is also rushed but cute nonetheless, an ending without any depth. It could've been much more, considering where the plot went but it just felt like the author didn't want to milk it... more>> more and just ended it.

Why I'm rating it so highly?

First of all, the food p*rn is just perfect and the translator makes it even better, like I mainly know most of the chinese dishes but get hungry reading about them and I love the food pictures!

Also a (in my opinion) superb translation job and I've been following the novel since the beginning and it was quite the ride, and I mainly enjoyed the plot line involving the female lead (and her development) and not necessarily the male lead, he was just.... yuck, okay he was betrayed in the past but like.... he wasn't that nice <<less

Was reading a different novel (which was so long) that I really needed a change of pace. Coincidentally, I noticed that TMR had just been completely translated. I went straight into it and finished it in just ~2-3 days. Just based on the time I spent to finish this novel, you can already guess how much of an enjoyable read it was to me. I won't go into details as what reviews are usually supposed to do, I am just here on a small mission to get rid of those... more>> last vestiges of thoughts clouding your mind from reading this novel, so that even you can share in my joy. <<less
