Solo Leveling

10 years ago, after “the Gate” that connected the real world with the monster world opened, some of the ordinary, everyday people received the power to hunt monsters within the Gate. They are known as “Hunters”.

However, not all Hunters are powerful. My name is Sung Jin-Woo, an E-rank Hunter. I’m someone who has to risk his life in the lowliest of catacombs, the “World’s Weakest”.

Having no skills whatsoever to display, I barely earned the required money by fighting in low-leveled catacombs… at least until I found a hidden catacomb with the hardest difficulty within the D-rank catacombs!

In the end, as I was accepting death, I suddenly received a strange power, a quest log that only I could see, a secret to leveling up that only I know about! If I trained in accordance with my quests and hunted monsters, my level would rise.

Changing from the weakest Hunter to the strongest S-rank Hunter!

I recommend reading the manhwa. There are lots of silly things that just make him look supre dumb if you read it, but the same scene in the Manhwa flows much nicer.

I think its because reading it it gives us all the info but he doesn't seem to process it, so he looks dumb, but in the manhwa it shows the information and next instant he is reacting to it or failing to react to it, whereas with words he is failing to react or reacting incorrectly even though given... more>> the information he is apparently processing he should act smarter.

EDIT: Still enjoyed the Manhwa more than the novel, but came back after than manhwa ended around chapter 90 of the manhwa, which was about ~115 in the novel. It deserves closer to 4 than 3, so I gave it a 4. I reckon 3.8 is what would give it otherwise. It was a novel that was "cool", but honestly the only reason I read it was because I wanted to find out what happened. There are many books that if I read a summary I would still want to read the book, but this wasn't good enough for that <<less

I prefer an ending without reversing the time. His only reason why he did that is probably to revive his father but his family weren't mention in this final chapter which is lame. The chairman goh gun hui died defending humanity it's a perfect ending for him but this MC reverse the time and made him a normal person with a normal ending he will die of old age anyway. Humanity as a whole would be stronger after the war because of those tragic experiences but since MC reverse time... more>> they became like we are today. Humanity will evolve faster with their experiences with the hunters who survived. At the end of the day the MC was selfish, but hey most people including me are selfish.. I'm just saying the ending with no reverse time is way better. Thanks for the series author, translator, editors. This novel started really good but the ending wasn't good. My rating 7/10 which is an average rating, not so good but not bad either. Thanks <<less

I used to be surprised that human beings had been score this collection pretty low. I suppose its a clearly right series, and it easily have become my #1 preferred series to study out of all the manga, manhwa, and manhua i've examine so far.

Interesting read, but I keep getting feeling I have read this novel before. As every almost every Korean dungeon delving novel, follows the same path. It's rare to find novel ideas nowadays. That being said, I didn't check the completion dates of all these novels, so this might be the original one. And all the other's were borrowing from this one.

Some of the side characters were left in the dust and completely unexplored, even if they were made relevant at first. Left me with thoughts of why even include them... more>> in the first place.

Romance was inserted into the story at the end as a checkmark and felt a bit fake, but at least there was no ridiculous harem taking the readers away from the story.

Is it worth the read? - Yes

Is it flawless masterpiece? - No <<less

I Alone Level Up, initialy known to me as Solo Leveling, is a fine exemple of short Korean novel.

The main character, Sung Jin-Woo, is pretty well written, clever, principled and careful most of the time. The side characters are a bit bare boned, but still good. The setting, which is our world with the addition of fantasy creatures and dimension gates leading to dungeons, is very well made, as is the power system, which is closely connected to the hidden, underlying intrigue that explains the apparition of the supernatural in... more>> the modern Earth. Two of the strongest points of the story is that, while the protagonist get strong, very strong, quite fast, his power does not make him lose his cool head and that he always finds challenging/difficult situations. The ending is also very satisfying.

The only negative point are the romance aspect, which is a bit on the weak side and accessory, the translation, which can be incoherent at times, although it improves toward the end and the slight bit of anti-Japanese sentiment in a part of the novel.

So, I Alone Level Up is a Korean short novel which, while not excellent, is still very good, and will give you a great time between two big Chinese stories. I also advise you to read the manhwa adaptation, under the title "Solo Leveling", whose drawings are gorgeous.

PS: Thanks to Chugong for writing this tale and to 100 White Salts Translation, 25th Chesnut and the Qidian translator for bringing us this story. <<less

I finished it, I liked it.

It's not perfect for sure, but it's a fun novel to read, it's not too long and it actually has an ending which I found decent. This novel is definitely in the top 10% of CH/KR/JP novels I have read, but that's more because of the endless tr*sh out there.

A cool novel that's worth your time, ruined by a s*upid overly idealistic ending.

Here's the summary ending spoiler:

Spoiler

MC defeated the final boss that's a calamity after they completely wrecked Canada, these angels (called Rulers) descended and thanked him, the eternal war between transcendental being was over. Guess what the MC did? He asked them to reverse time using the LAST CHARGE of a relic that can go back 10 years to fight them again like a hero in the shadow so that no one else have to suffer and no one else will ever recognize what he did.

Let me tell you why this was s*upid as hell:

  • The final bosses (called Sovereigns) gets resurrected and retain their memories because they are transcendental beings. Only the Earthlings and Earth itself gets its memories erased when the relic is used for time reversal.
  • The last final boss is supposed to be vastly overpowered that's stronger than him even at his absolute peak.
  • Yes, there were 8 total bosses. He wanted to reverse time and go fight all 8 of them who were all allied with each other, including the extremely OP final boss by himself.
  • He basically put the whole galaxy at risk by resurrecting these Sovereigns he killed because he didn't like this outcome, so he used his bs 'plot determination' and vow to defeat them.
  • Guy defeated all 8 of them magically somehow after 27 years, reappeared again in Earth in around the same time before he used the Relic as a senior in high school. People who knew him before he reversed time no longer know him, though they all think he seemed 'familiar', guy makes contact again with a few of them while ignoring others, date the same girl he dated before he reverse time. The end.
[collapse]

Literally wasted 240+ chapters of world building, character building, relationship building, etc for this s*upid ending that basically said 'none of that happened'. Not to mention what he did was extremely selfish.

TLDR: If you like reading through the whole novel and then at the end, the author just throw away all the world and character building out the window because the protagonist want to be a hero who suffers by himself. Help yourself.

I really wanted to give this a 2 but I pressed 3 by mistake so it's whatever. <<less

I went in after reading the manhwa a bit, thinking that it would be another one of those Korean novels with an OP protagonist.
Since the Japanese and Chinese style are a bit repetitive, a Korean novel once in a while isn't bad since their protagonists tend to be depicted as a bit more human (they are still OP heroes, but a jerk that isn't omnipotent outside of the whole fighting thing is nice once in a while).

Sure enough, I got what I came for, but it is pretty well written, without too much filler, and the translation is pretty decent as well so it ended up being more enjoyable than I thought it would be for the few days I spent reading it.

This is a fairly entertaining novel. It’s far more plot driven so it keeps your interest with new events and challenges. There’s less filler nonsense than other novels. The MC is the weakest point. He starts mature and often behaves inconsistently to progress the story, but it’s not too bad. Overall this is an entertaining read.

If you liked Everyone Else is a Returnee then this one is for you

This novel follows a good pace and has good characters that are not arrogant unlike those Xianxia novels (not saying Xianxia are bad... I love them too but they are infamous for their 2-D characters except some)

The romance is good and progresses at an acceptable rate although I will say that this is not the best part of this novel

Also if you've not read the manhwa then make sure you do... It's awesome and I started reading the novel because I caught up with the comic and couldn't wait to read more of the story... You can read it on Mangakakalot or some other site you use. <<less

The MC is decent enough for the

chapters before he got his ability to level up.

The story is great because MC and other character's mistakes often matter later on and you can definitely see that.

... more>> The leveling system is decent enough to keep the lore of the novel intact.

There are definitely some crucial boss fights that make the MC really work for it and the results affects the world MC lives in, in an interesting way.

The only problem I have with this is the way the author tries to sell the MC as a sympathetic character while disregarding his original ideals. Give and take that's his main way of going through his life after the incident that gave him his leveling ability.

The problem now is here

    1. Spoiler

When he enters the demon dungeon the second time he gets to meet this girl named Esil and later on finds that they're only trying to protect the dungeon they were trapped in because an unknown identity compels them to do so. What he does with this information ?. Nothing besides seeing this as some hint on what is the system. But he still acts like the 'monsters' he's killed are just npcs. Just cause a game like mechanics is in his body. He now knows full well that high monsters have intelligence and have emotions in them. But he just kills all the demons without warning them by showing his might (magical aura), so that other demons lives would be spared if they surrender like Esil. Yet he just assumes they will be too prideful to hides his true intentions that is leveling up and getting rare drops from the demons.

      [collapse]
    1. Spoiler

He does this again with the chairman of Yujin Construction. What's his reason ?. He simply doesn't want to give the chairman the rare limited item because he assumes there's better effects and doesn't want to give it because of it's limited quantity. Even though he knows that if the chairman succumbs to his illness his friend Yu Jon Jo and everyone working in his dad's company would be met by a huge calamity.

      [collapse]
Until I see some improvements on him I won't be giving this any higher score.

I adore this novel, all the chapters are translated on wuxiaworld if you wanna binge it. There is nothing outstanding about this novel, the main character is op, the its cliche and simple. One man against the world, but thoughout all its faults I still love it. But its plot's tone is always consistent, the characters are lovable, I know people don't like the MC all but much but I think his faith in those he trusts is admirable.

Spoiler

The MC loses a lot, friends, people he can put his faith in, he uses his people as a armor and a safe net for thoses he trust and the fact he can not save them in the end is his poison. In the end he gives up everything so more people can have happy lives. Even if he can't be with them as long as as the people he cares about are there he will stay.

"'There are still people that I love in this world.

And also, those who love me, and those who used to love me exist in this place, too.

That is more than enough reason for me to stay here.'" This quote from the story is something that resonates with me, thats why I love the main character.

Already finished this, including the side stories and truthfully, this is one of the best light novels I have read.

1. The plot is amazing and unpredictable to a certain extent. Everything makes more sense as you read more so it goes to show that the author made an effort. The side stories are golden haha The dry humor is amazing.

2. The character development is amazing for all characters involved. The MC becomes less emotional during the mid arcs but he retains his basic humanity. At first I was scared that... more>> he was going to be the trope scum MC but surprise, surprise, he did not. The author is a cheat, as he tries to brush Korean/ Japanese LNs stereotypes, only to pull back the next second. I managed to love all side characters.

3. There is no harem which is a plus for me. The romance only comes at the end, literally. The story focuses on the MC's desire to get stronger and protect the people around him.
To confused people and GainedWheat0:

Spoiler

To those who got confused about Esil. She's a demon king's subordinate. Therefore, she's probably just a "remnant" or a memory of Baran's army since Baran was already killed by Osborne in the Chaos world. Esil is a soldier and her family is a low rank, therefore they would have been dispatched earlier during the war in Chaos World. The fact that Baran got killed means those at the frontline died first. They were just probably made by the Architect.

[collapse]

4. One of the most touching endings and most relatable MCs.

Major Spoiler about the ending and the reason and implications:

Spoiler

The MC is someone who cherishes life, humans and his soldiers as well. So his decision at the end was true to his values and he indeed made the most easy decision for everyone but hardest on himself. The sides stories would help others to understand more but personally, if you're immersed to the story and know about loss you'd get his decision right away. Osborne respected that part of the MC because they both had unwavering loyalty and love for the people around them and self-sacrificial.

I respect how the author stayed true to his character's wishes. Jin-woo chose a life where people didn't have to lose anyone due to the gates or to the eternal sleep. Even if he chose to continue after, the loss and grief would have been immense. Normal people would still continue to die after the war since only Hunters are able to adapt in the new earth.

[collapse]

Anyway in response to the dilemma of most reviewers here. Solo leveling can be good or bad depending on the point of view of the reader. If it is the game element and standard weak to strong LN, this novel falls short. Simply because it eliminates the element of competition. However, if you read it as an actual novel, plot-wise, depth-wise, this novel stands out. The meaning of Solo Leveling is definitely not the one-layer definition of him just being the only one becoming stronger. As you read on, you get to realize it means being strong enough to shoulder everyone's burden. That is the ultimate definition of being strong. It goes beyond the coolness factor of having an OP, to the threshold of meaningful literature. Truthfully, alot of popular LNs here fall short of the true essence of literature. That is, literature must have a soul. Therefore, it has to be relatable, moving, alive, and meaningful. I've always chosen to only review novels who have essence or atleast the potential to have one. As a reader, I encourage everyone to dig deeper than the surface for this is truly a treasure. For example, the concept of him being chosen, the question of who is truly good or bad, etc. I find that this and Praise the Orc! And black haze share those qualities. <<less

Okay, so this is just a minor heads up and minor review for this novel.

I loved it. Have you read Everyone Else is a Returnee? No? Go read it as it's fantastic, and then read this as it's just as fantastic. Same type of plot, same local, but with a cheapish ending. Not enough to remove a star though, as the extra 27 chapters somewhat made up for it. HOWEVER, the translation of those is literally cancerous, but it's worth it.

Read this one if you want to know what to... more>> skip:
Spoiler

You can skip all of the Shadow Soilder memories, as they're cute but so butchered it's not worth it. But if you can handle the terrible translation quality, then here's a summary:

This is a massive spoiler for the 27 bonus chapters and the end of the novel so read this if you dare. It's in the second spoiler tag.

[collapse]

Don't open the spoiler tags below this sentence if you want to read the poorly translated 27 bonus chapters without spoilers.

Spoiler

You've been warned.

SPOILERS:

Our main hero becomes a cop, marries that one female warrior (Chae-something), has a kid who SUPRISE is also going to be a new death incarnate, and overall the main hero is super wonderful and lovey dovey to his wife and kid. His work as a cop mainly involved shadow shoulders threatening bad guys though. Also, the head cop remembers his heroic deeds, so did his dad until the dad asked to forget everything so that he could be a good father. The Hunters Association chairman is kept alive for an extra 10 years, but then asks to see the past memories from our hero on his deathbed and thanks him. Overall, super lovey dovey bits and it gave the series a nice, feels good ending.

[collapse]

Overall, a solid 5/5 in my book. But the extra chapters are like a 3/5 where the 3 is the author's content and the missing 2 points is the cancerous translation. <<less

It's actually quite a good read.

I love the fact that we keep getting updates on the MC's stat so we don't get lost on how strong he's getting. Plus there's a small selection of skills the MC used that gives more of an emphasis on the MC's main class and ability, which is way better than the average "jack of all trades, master of none" MC in other novels.

The only tiny problem I have is the lack development of side characters (love interest, right-hand man, etc...). They are quite dull... more>> tbh. I understand that since the novel's title is "I ALONE level up", you gotta focus on the MC more, but still it wouldn't hurt to make the side characters more... engaging. <<less

TLDR; Read the manga (Solo Levelling) instead.

This novel is set in a modern world where Dungeons keep appearing. The Hunters, humans who have obtained superhuman powers, must kill the bosses of these dungeons. As the dungeons are full of valuable materials, the Hunters don’t really need much convincing to do so. The MC is the weakest of all Hunters, but after an incident gets gamer powers. He becomes more and more OP as the story goes on.

Two points really bothered me about this story: the MC intelligent and perceptive when... more>> others are around, but when he’s alone he seems to regress to a kid (I’m going to put all my points in Strength so I will be stronger) and fails to explore his powers (he knows they are like a gamer’s, but doesn’t look up game systems online). Also, in the first part (before he gets his powers) two characters the MC admires barely escape death. When the MC wakes up, it seems he has forgotten all about them.

The manga fixes part of the idiot moments and makes the rest less obvious, and has the MC inquire about the survival of the characters he admires when he wakes up. With these things fixed, the manga is actually pretty good. The plot is a bit cliché, containing elements from o.a. Arc (sick mother, MC needs money for medical bills and takes care of his sister), The Gamer (OP gamer powers) and Arifureta (weak to OP MC, rather arrogant and ruthless after becoming OP), but the very real stakes (dead=dead) and the ever-thickening plot kept me reading. <<less

Binged in three sittings. Written in an easy-to-read fashion typical of webnovels, you don't really get bogged down by detailed descriptions. You don't really know what the people look like and it assumes some settings and monsters are known to the reader. The writing and translation flows easily and quickly, nothing is too complicated and other than some chapters of stat windows, each chapter is not too boring. You get a mix of human interactions and the MC's efforts in clearing dungeons which thankfully are usually 'fast forwarded'. You don't... more>> get bogged down with the painstaking description of each and every monster killed.

There is a cast of supporting characters but the title is really apt as their usefulness revolve around assisting the MC with the minutia rather than actually having meaningful relationships with him. He has shown no interest in love, but there are those who admire him; he has no interest in politics but various governments and factions are spying on him, he has no earthly desires but constantly reminded of the need for power and money.

The main appeal of the novel is reading about a no-fuss no-muss MC, in a familiar modern setting but filled with heroes, special abilities, monsters and items. It's a story you can read on the go and return every now and then without missing too much if you do forget some things. It really is a good time waster, not something for you to be emotionally invested in. You are probably not going to learn anything for it or feel awed by the story, but it can fill your time better than most of the other novels that dump paragraphs of info dumps. <<less

The adventure part of the story where the MC rises up and goes against the existing structures of society is indeed a fun read. In contrast to so many other authors of this genre, the author offers an intelligent narration where he generally pays attention to detail. But instances of plot holes do occasionally appear, proving early on that this period may not last.

Hence, when it comes to moving the plot towards its goal and revealing the truths behind everything, the writing turns increasingly unnatural, forced, overdramatized, or ambiguous, while... more>> the MC starts to resemble a puppet whose achievements come from what he had acquired rather than his own worth and decisions. I mean, if you're writing about a hero protagonist, don't glorify her or him from the start on, just to qualify all of their achievements towards the end, where the adventure is supposed to be more enticing to read on. <<less

An enjoyable story, don't get me wrong. Who doesn't love seeing a determined character progress from the bottom into someone others idolize and look up to. However, the Jin-woo (The main character) is just a wish fulfillment self-insert character, who faces some minor troubles in the beginning of the novel and changes, then proceeds to remain a static character for the rest of it (as of chapter 136). He can do no wrong, and will always win without breaking a sweat. Each new villain is hyped up to be far... more>> stronger than the villains he's had to face before but at the end of the day he will still win in the end without breaking a sweat.

It seems like the main character raising his stats is how the author is trying to show development for Jin-woo as a character, but it's simply not the case, and he's just proceeded to get s*upid overpowered and everyone knows it, yet he still gets constantly underestimated for some reason. Like, he defeated an dungeon that 20+ hunters alone failed to even come close to denting single handily, I think you should know by now that he's way out of your league.

In all honesty, all the characters in this are static, this isn't exclusive to the main character. The only reason I gave this a 3/5 is because the fight scenes are fun, seeing how the plot plays out and the political environment of hunters develops, and interest in Jin-Woo's progression (talking about power wise, odds are the self insert will remain as one for the rest of the story). If you don't care about good characters, I recommend this to you. Otherwise, I would not recommend anyone read this. <<less
