Earth Online – a virtual MMORPG that takes place in the future year of 2190 – a game that everyone will bet their futures on. Set in a map that is ten times the size of real-world Earth, players battle for supremacy in the first game to feature personal adventure, territory construction, and grand warfare. For every death you experience in the game, your level would drop back to zero. Ouyang Shuo, an above average player, suffered the ultimate betrayal. For merely a piece of equipment, his sworn brother betrayed and backstabbed him. This time, after he reincarnated in the game, Ouyang Shuo swore to exact vengeance.

However, in an unexpected turn of events, Ouyang Shuo found himself back five years before the betrayal – right before the launch of Earth Online. This time, armed with the knowledge from his past life, Ouyang Shuo would venture upon a new path.

How to perfectly complete quests? What historical battle maps would appear? How should one build up their territory? Utilizing the experience from the predecessors of his last life, Ouyang Shuo makes his bid for the top against all odds. Follow his journey as he seeks to lord over the world!

A different kind of tale that blends historical characters and virtual reality gaming, with heavy emphasis on kingdom building and warfare.

I'll keep it short. The characters are pretty shallow, there are way too many of them, and nothing is really new or particularly well done in the story itself. If you're looking to burn time, or you just like mindlessly reading the series isn't bad. If you like other, similar novels it's probably not bad either. Just don't go in expecting great story and world building, go in expecting something to read that isn't bad.

There are a lot of points about which I could rant about but rather than doing it I will give it 4 and say that I enjoyed it. The story is definitely different from what one might expect for it's title or genre and it falls in right into my comfort zone that was created after reading kingdom manga and reading ROTK so yea, it's good stuff overall.

MC has the biggest cheat (unlimited knowledge that comes from being sent back few years) TRUE but overall the entire story is more... more>> of single player rather than anything else. While MC does interact and meet up with other players, their entire role comes down to hyping up MC showing how great he is, even if all he really does is no different than playing a game with complete walk-through made by experts as well as cheat console... but hey, that's exactly what makes MC great... sigh, I started describing the story and I immediately went to RANT so no more... overall it's good and MC being OP issue can be solved as long as one looks at this story from single player standpoint. <<less

It's a well written and well thought out story. The downside is massive history info-dumps and a lot of boring details concerning the structural organization of the government the main character is setting up. The structure is also constantly being revised and updated by the main character and in some ways it is interesting to read about but there are times it just makes you want them to hurry up and get on with the story. That's not to say the information isn't relevant, it's just often a bit much.

After... more>> reading 300+ chapters I can't say that it's my favorite story but it's at least interesting to read and I think people who are into history would like the story. It's hard for me to remember a lot of the history in the story as somebody who has never learned about Chinese history in depth before. Sometimes I feel like my brain starts to melt after reading an entire chapter describing a historic battlefield's structure, participating generals, and causes. If I were interested in learning a lot about it though this work would be a good starting place. I wouldn't give the story 5 stars but I think it's well done enough to get 4. I can understand where the haters are coming from but I don't believe that this story is a piece of tr*sh. I respect anybody who is willing to do that much research and put so much knowledge into their work. <<less

The World Online is a VRMMO novel that is the least like a standard VRMMO novel and that is part of what makes it enjoyable. The story doesn’t revolve around someone running around going on adventures or challenging dragons, it is much more focused on kingdom building and political intrigue. This makes it a refreshing change from others and I can’t think of another novel that does this. You can sometimes find hints of it in other novels such as The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor has a very small dash of... more>> kingdom building but this novel makes it the focus and does it very well.

Summary: The MC is given a second chance reincarnation where he is sent back in time to before the opening of a very important VRMMO. Using his knowledge of the future he begins building his own kingdom in the hopes of creating a good life for himself and his younger sister. In order to do this he will create a city and then a nation built around talents he has recruited from all over the place.

Pros:

  • Actual MC Motivation: Unlike a lot of novels the MC in this one has an understandable motivation and you understand why he is so focused on success.
  • Interesting MC: The MC makes mistakes but is an intelligent and thoughtful person who actually explains things in a logical manner. He isn’t too OP and his domination can easily be seen as his own hard work. He gains one advantage in the beginning which isn't too game breaking and everything else is just him remembering some key details about what happened. Unlike other MC’s he isn’t too overbearing or mean, he isn’t hateful or vindictive. This in addition to his great relationship with his sister and those around him makes it so that he seems like a real person rather than just a game playing machine.
  • Great Kingdom Building: This novel is the only one I have found that goes so far in depth with kingdom building, and it does a good job of it.
  • Interesting Characters: The people around the MC are pretty interesting and you quickly want to see more of them.
  • Changing the Future: One of the best things about this novel to me is that the world actually changes because of the MC. His actions cause huge shifts which make sense and that makes things more interesting.
Cons:

  • Dry: The Kingdom Building aspect isn’t for everyone, it can be very dry at times and if you are looking for action then this isn’t the place.
  • Lacking Side Characters: Other than a small pool of individuals, you don’t really have a lot of side characters and it can often seem like the MC exists in a vacuum.
  • Real World Plot is Bonkers: I feel like the author took a look at Shura’s Wrath and thought “ I can make the plot outside the game even crazier”. I don’t want to put spoilers but while it provides the MC motivation in the game it also is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever read.
Conclusion: I would give it a try if you haven’t already! It almost certainly isn’t for everyone but I personally love this novel and think it does what it sets out to do very well. <<less

Took a look at the title: Seems creative enough. Maybe there'll be something more eye catching in the description.

Took a look at the description: Apprehension feels me, it makes me feel like there's a crap load of painfully s*upid wuxia tropes and cliche DRIPPING out from the words. But I'm bored because there's nothing left to read, might as well give it a try eh?

Starts reading: What's with that messy intro? From a betrayed death, we get thrown into some infodump monologue about this Earth's (incredibly illogical) history.

Was there a... more>> need to have this kind of complicated space/galaxy/exaggeratedly wide word for an MMO STORY? Are you going to be flying all over the place from INSIDE your s*upid game? Are you going to have Adventurers challenging aliens from inside you puny little capsule? No? Then why the f*ck would you complicate matters? If you wanted to do that whole [The world is actually BAJILLION KMs] & [MY d*ck CAN RULE A DOZEN GALAXIES] thing, then just write a normal cultivation story with space travel. The only difference is you'd be copying something like "Immortal Mortal" instead of "Legendary Guardian".

Moving on.... why the actual f*ck is this guy so laid back about time travel? Wait, he can remember promising to take his sister to a playground? a promise he made 5 years ago? Just like that?

Le wild jade/peach/lotus beauty a.k.a most likely first harem member shows up and instantly shows interest in what appears to be a random guy who apparently has a crap ton of cash, who decided to instantly shift into her house, with a loli in tow. O....k?

And that's just the first 3 chapters. Suffice to say.... the novel has its pros and cons but after 200 chapters, I only regret that I can't give it a big fat zero, because if I did, i'd have to give every single mmo story out there a zero as well because this is basically just another circle jerk, copy paste pastiche of the MMO trope churned out by a ret*rded monkey purely for financial purposes.

Stilted, unrealistic conversations with brain dead characters, Mind numbingly useless infodumps and descriptions (filler word count), big b**bs, beautiful characters, illogical interest in the MC despite being a newbie, game physics that SOMEHOW bends itself to make him seem OP while everyone else happens to be an idiot.

The usual idiocy i've come to expect from chinese novels I guess. <<less

Just like every chinese novel, this novel has a repetitive content.

But, the author can make this novel unique even by its repetitiveness by making different approach.

Like just every poor MC that bullied by rich gen, while other novel have the NC become of, in this novel the MC was helped by on allies/subordinate.

As for the translation, the gravitytales has done good job so far, just like every selfish reader out there I just hope more daily release for the chapters like 10 chapter a day? ?

Well, First the translation is well done and we can enjoy a story with a different subject than Cultivation/Game elements/OP character going to build an harem with s*x s*ave...

Kingdom building in this novel is real, war are well described, competition is really fun, it is a good story.

But... in the beginning its ok to have somes setup where you place people on spot where they deserve

... more>> but haveing half of the chapter describing who deserve this or this place and what institution he will create etc etc... is quite boring

To compare with Realease that witch, I find the " story setup in game" more interesting than RTW

But RTW know better how to do a kingdom building story, as for exemple the fact that he know how to keep building his " empire " by doing change in the way people live and not by putting people where they belong like " change the mind of people around him, how to teach them the good way, how to REALLY setup an army "

but this is still a good a really good novel to read if you skip the part where he administrate the people around him <<less

From where I'm in the story (chap 68), I can see a lot interesting materials regarding story background, detailed output on game mechanics, and lot of planning.

Sadly, the Author seems to has put too much of himself in the MC. Commiting the major sin of an author, writing the novel as a way to live though his Main Character.

As such, the global personnality and events surrounding the MC is passable for moderate readers, and annoying for experienced readers of the genre.

I consider myself an experienced reader of the genre, and... more>> I learned a lot from this novel. But I started to lose interest, seeing how everything went the way the MC wanted (even if you'r reincarnated in the past, butterfly effect?).

Secondly, the story was too focused on the detailed construction of the village/town. A lot is good, too much is boring.

In the end, what really made me sad about such a great story was how the author puts to much emphasize on the MC's daily efforts to manage the town, and deal with the NPC, completely forgetting the bigger picture. That this is a massively multiplayer game. <<less

i like accumulation stories where you eat and eat till you become big, thats how is the novel for me, I like when the MC talked about his territory and how to develop it, romance is bad, really bad and the author know that so he abandon it and im cool with that, combat scene I always find them boring in novels in general so I skiped a lot of late stage battles in this novel so im not sure if they are good or bad.

final conclusion, I loved the... more>> novel <<less

It started out as good. MC reincarnates and wants to have a better life.

Spoiler

There's sci-fi involved and that the VRPG was planned for a mass migration. It was a good touch as to why the whole kingdom building game was created.

[collapse]

MC had a head start, and that's what usually what reincarnation novels are about. The strategy and war planning was a nice touch, and the historical aspect just fly out of my mind. Never listened to history class anyway.

It's also a loooong novel, and is following a game storyline (kinda) so there's bound to be repetitive scenes/scenarios.

Giving this 2/5 for that reason. It just became boring by the end of it and I didn't even read the remaining chapters and just skimmed it to finish the story. <<less

A typical your Chinese novel, repetitive and rush ending.

If you're okay with historical figures, then it's good to go. There will be so many historical figures on it, you'll need to remember their names. So many names, a lot of it. Who knows that one day you'll need them on assessment tests.

It's not really the end of story. So, a disappointment for me. Why not make it as hiatus? My guess, it will take for a long time to finish or the author doesn't want to continue. Besides, whether it's... more>> good or not that book will be, it's still in a question. <<less

Def not my type of bread, I thought I would enjoy this, but it feels repetitive. He just logs in to the game, does some exercises, roll call with NPCs and that's about it. Also, even thou his luck stat is low, his luck def is not.

Well, I think most of the reviews are trues about this novel.

It's a nice start and got points for trying to put elements of politc and economic, but the autor get pages and pages about story and if you aren't chinese it's really boring. At least there are some nice war narration that makes you keep reading

At the midle of the novel there aren't anymore exciting plots. All the same, everything are undercontroll of the MC and his enemys can't do anything to put him in dangeruos. The antagonist is... more>> useless and nothing out of the expected happens, at some point I was hoping to the plan of MC didn't work an things get fun, but this didn't happen...

The final is just to mechanical and lack emotion. <<less

  • It was good. From start till the end that is if you ignore some unnecessary details.
  • I don't know how to write a review but the novel kinda left me hanging in the end. I want to know how Ouyang's journey in the Hope planet prevail. The ending is soooooo bitin.
  • I also like the mc's character. He is rational, not that cold blooded, smart and humble. Like the arrogance of winning the battles and almost unifying was left out. He didn't let it get on his head and instead maintain his ideology and principle. He is soooo good. I want a leader like him to lead us haha. I also like how him being so loyal to his wife. Even tho in ancient time having concubines and such is the norms. He didn't do such actions and remain steadfast. His perspectives on the NPC is good too, cauze he didn't really treat them like such and instead view them as an equal. Which made the NPC's more loyal to him than others. He got the heart and mind of a leader which is quite cool.
  • The secret of the mc's reincarnation was given an explanation too. It was quite a luck chance actually.

I don't know if I'm going to continue to read this one, but if I do i'll update my review then.

anyways before I even break down this novel I find it funny how this novel is rated with 4 stars. for everyone reading this they I'm sure this will remind them of another very similar novel, yep you guessed it "reincarnation of the strongest sword god." both novels are vr games with vested interests from reality based corporations now don't get me wrong rotssg was a piece of garbage but... more>> likewise this novel is just as bad.

well first of all probably the biggest issue rwt. for anyone who hasn't played a f*cking massive multiplayer game in there life like this author rwt stands for "real world trading." this basically means spending real life currency to buy in game currency. now this is an issue because it inherently destroys the integrity of the game. you could even see this here in the game people who are rich just has this massive edge not only that its basically pay to win which demphasizes skill in the game. now for non gamers, they might not understand well how does this exactly destroy the game well, the reason is it makes the game less about how good you are at the game and more about how big your wallet is. now obviously if the purpose of the game is to give momentary bursts of easily obtained satisfaction like some shitty mobile games then sure because those games have each have smaller player bases and their player bases are largely non competitive. however in this game its obviously not intended that way.

the 2nd biggest issue world online after just reading the summary I already knew what type of game this was based of. this basically is vr "civilization." I mean if you were going to write a book and base it off a specific game model don't you think the smart and rational thing to do is maybe to actually play one of these games and do some research before you write everything out. as far as I can see it doesn't even look like the author did any sort of research. it feels like there basically no technological advancement aside from the creation of more military gears like forging swords and armors why not have it also progress more scientifically towards the future. maybe its because the author is so caught up in his idea of an "ancient Chinese settings" honestly from what I read in the beginning I still don't understand the point of it. it said that the earth will explode in the future and that they all needed to migrate so the game was idk some sort of a beta test if that the case why bother limiting the tech to the f*cking dynasty era.... also this makes the game purely management and no improvement.

also just a very minor gripe but this sh*t has happened so much it just f*cking triggers the hell out of me at this point. why the f*ck are the auctions never anonymous like... every freaking Chinese novel the authors are like " they have minor changes in appearance." just f*cking make it anonymous plus its all f*cking done through by the game system anyways. of course I understand why the authors do it but I just feel like its such a cheap way the generate plot and conflict that its just disgusting. if it were anonymous you would have so much more mind games like the characters would have to think about hmmm who actually made this bid and if it was that person how do they have such capital so and so.

edit - okay I went a bit deeper in and they finally mention some firearms like cannons. but just like rotssg they had to throw in cultivation manuals and such ugh... <<less

I think this is designed for people who like to manage building and stuff, but unfortunately, I'm not into those stuff, this series for me is ridiculously boring, let's say yeah, it's a worldbuilding novel, but the thing is, there's no excitement in those in building, what can I say? Bland? Yeah I think that's the right word, bland, bland, bland

I will separate my criticism into two parts: The kingdom-building and the story.

The kingdom-building is ambitious and -in my opinion- too complicated. The author does not manage to graduate from the "village affairs" and so everything becomes a micromanagement mess. Instead of focusing on the building, the author puts the inter-personal-relationships in the foreground. Who doesn't love to read about how random NPC#27 gets promoted again and again, even though they just got promoted. And so it goes chapter for chapter.

The rest of the story is the usual bullshit. At... more>> first, the MC and his little sister seem sympathetic and full of character, not as 2D as folks in other stories. But soon after, it becomes the usual MC-harem plot. Everywhere the MC goes is full with girls (spoiler: they like him). And it's not just your average girls. Of course they are both "top female experts" and "top beauties". Also they come from rich and mysterious backgrounds and are smart and good with money as well. The males on the other hand are bland, jealous and enemies.

What bothers me the most is the MCs motivation. He says he wants his sister to live like a princess, but then he acts like a warlord and goes to rule alone.
Spoiler

At the beginning, why does he not just enter the alliance with the top six chinese guys? He will get a good salary and also have lots of time to spend with his sister. Instead he leaves her alone and fights alone.

[collapse]

The other thing that really bothers me is how the MC with his future knowledge of being a fighter is suddenly good at economics. If I went back 10 years, I would not suddenly know quantum mechanics. The MC manages to pull it off and always amazes the historic geniuses.

I give it a 4* because the kingdom-building parts that are there are amazing and not found in other novels. Still this could be a six. <<less

My review is very biased since I started skimming heavily around chapter 300.

I feel the start was more than decent but after say ch 100 the writer's shortcomings start to show. Infodumps that may be true or just fictional and micromanagement everywhere instead of interesting plots. The background plot used was what made me skim to end. Why did he reincarnate, why is resource shortage even a thing when you can travel the stars? And so on. I did get the feeling that it was all a huge setup and... more>> humanity was evicted from the earth by the A.I´s but nothing except why he reincarnated was discussed.

My recommendation for this novel is to read until you get bored then drop it, it only gets more boring. <<less

The World Online is about Ouyang Shuo (the main protagonist) and how he builds up an empire in a game. A few things that could be worked on are the personalities of the people for The World Online, having tragedies for some 'god commanders' and whatnot since it appears that 'everything is right with the world' and having things fine and dandy.
