Eight hundred years ago, Xie Lian was the Crown Prince of the Xian Le kingdom. He was loved by his citizens and was considered the darling of the world. He ascended to the Heavens at a young age; however, due to unfortunate circumstances, was quickly banished back to the mortal realm. Years later, he ascends again–only to be banished again a few minutes after his ascension.

Now, eight hundred years later, Xie Lian ascends to the Heavens for the third time as the laughing stock among all three realms. On his first task as a god thrice ascended, he meets a mysterious ghost who rules over the ghosts and terrifies the Heavens, yet, unbeknownst to Xie Lian, this ghost king has been paying attention to him for a very, very long time.

Another amazing work by MXTX! At this point I've read all three of hers that have been translated/are being translated and they are hands down my favorites. This one in particular was so enjoyable to read that I couldn't put it down, though I've reread her other two multiple times. The MC and ML are so sweet together and there's never any doubt that they deeply love one another, and support each other in all the ways the other one needs.

I absolutely love this story, it's amazing and I was even more thrilled when I discovered it was by the same author who wrote Mo dao zu shi. With or without the shounen ai factor, it is a captivating read. Love the lead character Xie Lian and the love interest Hua Cheng, I can't wait to see where this goes. Well done to writer and translators.

It's... bland. There's no other way for me to describe this series. The world building is great, the flashbacks are nice, characters are nice and I liked the black water arc. The series still had its good parts and at least didn't make me regret reading the whole thing. Would I reread it though? Not really.

Now, let's start with the story arcs. They feel very disjointed like I'm consuming a book version of an episodic series. Others may not mind that style, but it definitely made it difficult for me... more>> to get to know our MC. It doesn't matter to me if there's
Spoiler

an explanation why certain things happened at the end

, I prefer my MC to have some form of goal outside of 'I'm doing this thing because someone told me to do it'. Or if he couldn't get out of doing that thing, at least give him a personal objective within the arc (no, making sure Hua Cheng is safe does not count as one).

My next biggest issues is how so many things keep happening at once and there's no time to actually get to know Xie Lian or Hua Cheng. Yes, Xie Lian is a kind person who wants to save people and
Spoiler

there's this one or two times he almost made a mistake and gave in to his rage but dang it he just wants to save the people no matter how difficult it is for him! It's an admirable trait, but I need more than that. He's great with swords but we never see him train. This could have been a decent inner conflict between him wanting to save people vs saving his time to devote to his swordsmanship. And sure he'd choose saving people, but it would have been nice to see the consequence of that connected to Xie Lian to show the sacrifice he made to save the people. Him getting thrown around or people betraying him doesn't work well for me after the 50th time.

[collapse]

Lastly, not sure if I vibe with the message of this series. Xie Lian was supposed to be a heroic character who does the right thing despite how much the odd is against him. This is an admirable trait especially if he claws himself back out of the hole and fights his way to victory... but he doesn't. Don't worry, since he's such a kind soul and he'd suffered enough, he'll get himself a very powerful devotee. What's the messaging here, if you're a martyr enough, eventually you'll find someone willing to give you their 100%? Eventually you'll find someone who will make everything okay? Sounds like a magnet for narcissists irl... <<less

Still one of the best danmei out there. Because it's so popular, people might call it cheesy and I see a lot of people misinterpreting the themes, intentions, and characters of TGCF but MXTX did a wonderful job covering so many topics and describing love, both romantic and platonic.

For any new readers, I would recommend you avoid twitter (or XXX as Musk Bro calls it) and other people's interpretations and opinions. Read it yourself first. You will be amazed.

This is the author's third work and also her longest.

TGCF, unlike SV which seems to focus more on the emotional and MDZS which focuses more on themes such as forgiveness and overcoming, seems to pay more attention to the feelings and relationships between the characters. The fact that the MC, Xie Lian, has lived for just over 800 years is definitely not something that can be easily overcome. Having lived, felt and related to numerous types of people over such a long period of time, it's completely natural that he... more>> would end up making extremely difficult decisions or be driven to almost irreparable psychological damage.

In fact, I still find it incredible and truly admirable how he managed to overcome and move on even in the midst of many things. Even if there were moments in the current timeline when you can see that some of those wounds were merely treated, but never truly and completely healed. Most of his relationships in the beginning are completely in ruins, and don't seem to have any chance of recovery. But even with all that, he has still managed, not to mend, but to patch up many wounds that have emerged over the years.

The other characters were also written and developed in a very human way, which was an unparalleled point of attraction in my opinion. What really stuck with me was that no one in this story can be described as entirely good or evil. Everyone walks a fine line between these two sides, fighting and doing the best they can for themselves, their loved ones and for a hope of happiness. All their decisions, actions and emotions are extremely relatable if you simply put yourself in their shoes without having any kind of prejudice in mind. They show that we can all reach a point of no return if we are pushed to the limit.

Moving on, another crucial point in this story is undoubtedly the romance. It was developed in a very sweet way. So sweet that you end up melting with every interaction. HuaLian really is that fairytale couple, who have an enviable and perfect love, with a true sense of eternity. It's completely impossible to look at them and not feel like you're floating or have that warm feeling in your chest. To tell you the truth, I think they're the couple with the cutest vibe out of the three by this author. I'd say they're like that teenage romance or the taste of first love. That love that burns, that warms you, that won't let you forget it. A gentle love that makes you feel complete and totally welcomed. With this person, you feel like the whole world could turn its back on you and everything would still be fine. Because that person, that person alone is enough. That person you know and feel will never, ever abandon you and will always be there for you, supporting you no matter what. That's how HuaLian makes you feel. That's how they are. A simple, sweet and engaging definition of the word love.

TGCF is also a very good story in terms of holding your attention. There are lots of things happening all the time, well-developed schemes, backstories to be discovered, new characters and a whole range of extremely attractive contexts that you can't take your eyes off. Everything was very well written and crafted, with nothing that seemed tedious or unnecessary throughout.

MXTX, for me, is an author with a real talent for writing. Everything is very captivating and can hit you hard if you choose to give it a chance.

Well, I'll stop here, as I feel I have nothing more to say.

I hope you give this baby a try! <<less

Read the book at least 4 times, best wuxi love story out there. VERY intriguing. The flashbacks can be annoying because it happens during the most crucial present time. HOWEVER it does not lower the quality of the book. The side characters are amazing, all the characters in the story are mind blowing and 3d. Great story.

In TGCF, the great progress of MXTX in its writing is evident.
It gives us more developed characters and story.
Xie Lian is the perfect character, my favorite among all the ones read, because he has several faces, we can see his gentle sides and his dark sides, showing us that not everything is light and goodness in our hearts, sometimes we have that pinch of darkness that does not make us villains but it does make us humans.
Hua Cheng is the best Gong of MXTX, because we can... more>> see his admiration, fidelity from the beginning, without anyone or anything makes him doubt his love.
Regarding the story and how it is exposed, I think it is excellent. It gives us the right moments of comedy, love and pain.
For the moment, my favorite. <<less

I'll never get over this novel, it's just so good : ( (The plot have a lot twist but the author managed not to make it messy. The plot progressed very well.

The romance is here is so intense. (Like I feel like I'm burning with how intense it was) Though I just wished author explored more the part where Xie lian finally fell in love with Hua cheng. I don't know but it feels lacking for me. but anyways, I really enjoyed reading this novel.

As for the... more>> characters, they're very dynamic.

I honestly liked Xie lian. His character is actually my cup of tea. When reading the flashbacks, I just want to protect him. His relationship with Mu Qing and feng Xin is one of my favorite things in this novel.

And Hua Cheng... Hua cheng

There's something about his character that I really like. Also, I need the author to give me backstory. <<less

I watched HOB donghua first then read the novel. Since then my life is never the same. This is a masterpiece. Out of all 3 of MXTX's work, this is my favourite. I bought the official paperbacks and can't wait for seven seas to release all 8 books so that I can read all over again. After all I prefer reading the actual book than reading online. Hualian will forever be in my heart. ❤️

It was a fairly enjoyable experience.

I got bored around the first 50 chapters not gonna lie, but somehow I had the motivation to continue it after some time. It was worth it.

Overall, the characters were likeable and I like the dynamic between MC and ML as they were respectful and sweet towards one another. The plot was interesting as well, with several twists that took me aback.

The second and the fourth book, on the other hand, disturbed me a lot. Not because it was poorly written but because I found... more>> it tragic and triggering. I was hesitant when going through these parts. <<less

Honestly, at first I was hesitant to read this novel because a lot of readers who read this said that it has a lot of angst but I still gave it a shot because I really wanna read this and boy! That is one of my good decision in my life because it was so good!! You may think that it was not so good because a lot of them say so but I believe that there aren't stories that are perfect, none at all! And that what makes storues... more>> incredible such as this.

This novel have a lot of ups and downs. It makes you wanna laugh, cry, disappointed (at the characters, and such), and of course squealed with excitement because of the romance. There are also mystery that makes you like a detective and makes you shock upon discovering these mysteries (so don't read spoilers, alright?)

I have read MXTX's three popular novels (which include this) and I could say that all of them are exceedingly wonderful. And among these three, MDZS really is my favorite.

Spoiler

dunno if this is a spoiler or not but anyway, I really want Mu Qin and Feng Xin to know about the things that happened to Xie Lian (such as the hundred people who pierce the sword on him and the way his parents' died) and I want them to know, not for them to pity him or anything like that but to let them know that when Xie Lian was on his lowest they left him and when the time that he really needed help, they are not with him. So I want to make them regret and realize that they don't deserve to be mad or angry at Xie Lian. I know that they each have their own problem, however, they know that a lot of people who believe and love him we're gone and that only his parents and his friends are left on his side, so as a friend, they should've known why Xie Lian became like that and got easily mad or changed.

Maybe the author really have to separate them in order to grow and be more mature, but I'm still quite disappointed and sad that their years of friendship were lost because they couldn't surpassed that challenge together up until the present and even if they became close, it will never be the same again. But maybe it's for the better to change their way of friendship or something.

Anyway this spoiler part, I really just wanna vent this words hahaha. So yeah.

Remembered when TGCF donghua came out and I was like “okay I have to read this novel”

The story was nice but somehow lacking, got plot holes. I won’t compared TGCF with the other MXTX’s books but if there is any words to describe, I’ll say it’s pretty decent. Still enjoyable and I had fun reading this.

God tier novel, a must read if you are a bl lover.

And I'm not just saying that because MXTX is the author. I'm definitely not one to worship the ground she walks on. Her writing is far from perfect, but she definitely has outdone herself with this novel. No awful s*x scenes, no abrupt, underwhelming endings. I was pleasantly surprised.

10/10 for the characters, both main and side characters. Every single character in this novel is fully fleshed out. Don't expect one character to be mentionned only to never be heard... more>> from again. The main character absolutely shines. As for humans... well, you'll want to kill every single one of them at the end of this novel.

10/10 for plot. Though I have to admit I saw the surprise villain plot twist coming from a mile away, it didn't take away from my enjoyment.

And finally... 10/10 for the main couple... what can I say, I'm a proud aroace single dog, yet they still managed to make me a little envious... that's quite the feat! One of the very few, fully healthy bl relationships you'll ever find. No power imbalance? No dubcon/rapey scenes? No overly jealous and possessive ML? Healthy communication? No misunderstandings? In a GAY couple? Wow! So rare!

Don't be fooled by the few who say this work is overrated. It deserves every single praise it gets. Go for it if you're ready to binge on 244 chapters + able to handle an ungodly amount of angst. Be strong, the good ending is worth it! <<less

This novel is honestly my favourite. I cannot understand most of the people complaining. I feel like they are either with some previous expectations as to what the story should contain because of the famous author writing it, or are just looking for gay p*rn. A lot of the thing people who rated the novel low complain about are things that in my opinion tie up the story and make it that much more interesting. Yes, sure, ML has some problems and is super powerful. But he didnt start this... more>> way. He is powerfull exactly because he used to be super powerless. There are also amazing side characters. And of course they cant be present the whole novel because they are indeed side characters. But when they are not there it's great because most often you cant be sure what happened to them and thus cant wait to read on and find out. As for the MC and ML. I loved them. Their dynamic just worked. They are great for each other, maybe at time toxic (ML) but they dont hurt or manipulate each other. The story is both super tragic and at the same time optimistic.

Overall the novel is great and I sincerely recommend it :). <<less

my all-time favourite historical danmei novel ever! I cannot emphasis how much I love this book, I cry each time I see an edit of this on tiktok T_T

I have read all of mxtx's novels, and this is ranked no.1 for me personally. The plot, characters, and everything is 10/10!

hualian are so adorable, their relationship progress is amazing, and I am always a simp for sweet and romantic scenes between main leads so this was wonderful haha. The love they have for each other is so beautiful and the best... more>> thing ever, sadly I will never be able to experience this in my lifetime but reading about hualian is more than enough ♡

for the plot, it is really interesting and there are so many plot twists that actually made me gasp because it was unexpected. It also makes you wonder, if gods are truly "perfect, saintly figures" that they are portrayed as. Rather than black and white personalities, everyone has their own grey areas; which makes them much more realistic and genuine. I love the storyline, but it could also be because I'm biased to anything wuxia and cultivation-related (oops)

also, the words spoken by the characters are so memorable, some touching quotes that make one's heart ache as if they are the one hearing it. Hua cheng and xie lian are the standard *cries in modern times*

overall, I highly recommend to peeps who enjoy historical novels and still want the romance element in as well! I only wish to erase all memories of this book so that I could reread and enjoy the novel again :) <<less

5/5

To me all of mxtx's novels are comfort novels because they don't take any energy to read and are very enjoyable. Yet when reading through many of the reviews on her novels, I can't help but agree with some of the critique.

This however doesn't stop me from liking these novels, and they have a special place in my heart since they are one of the few novels I can actually read without losing focus. This might just mean that I have bad taste, but it is still my taste that... more>> I stand by. I have read many bad novels in my life, and even if tgcf have parts that are lacking, I will still ignorantly give it 5 out of 5 stars.

The time that I have spent reading this novel has not been wasted, I enjoyed every minute of it and I have created many meaningful memories with it. I also want to say that I was surprised by the amount of love-story, and the lesser amount of world building and character study that I was expecting from earlier reviews, which is something to keep in mind in case anyone wants to read it :)

It might not be everyones cup of tea, but to me it is a very delicious cup of tea :3 <<less

I think this was just a so-so. Nothing really special. Probably shippers will be the only ones to enjoy it or die hard fans of the author.

Story: The story can be boring at times. Can be repetitive and has lots of plot holes. It was so slow, it took a while before the main plot.

Characters: I like XL but as the story goes I honestly find him annoying. He's been living for 800 years but it seems he didn't learn anything at all. I find his character flat. He was... more>> too good but at the same time it also felt half sincere since he can just forget and ignore those people so easily. He is too positive, always saying "don't worry I am here but in the end those people still died and he just forget them" and I hate that he just let people push him aside.

He reminds me of those annoying female characters who charms everyone just by smiling.

HC: He is also flat. He comes out too strong and too perfect. I didn't like that he seems like a stalker and too obsessed of XL

Probably one of the characters that I liked in thid series is Pei Ming, he wasn't good nor was he bad and he isn't pretending to be kind when he's not.

There are too many characters, some doesn't even have any major roles and even though they appear a few times, nothing much was said about their characters.

Peisu and Banyue's characters were interesting but like most characters, the author didn't show more of their thoughts- mostly have to be interpreted by HC and XL. <<less

Although I have some opinions regarding the writing style of MXTX for this one, I'm going to set it aside because if there's any god I'm going to light an incense for, it's Xie Lian. At least the other god has three days before he rose again, but Xie Lian had to endure 800 years of suffering in order finally feel some happiness and redeem himself. Pls do not argue, my atheist ass is gonna light incense for Xie Lian only because he deserves it. He suffered too much I... more>> cried so many times and I even had to skim some chapters of pure suffering, picking up details here and there.

I do have some reservations giving a 5 star rating because I would have loved to see a little bit of Hua Cheng's background, like how did he do in Mt. Tong'lu, how did he manage to become a supreme, his trials, etc. Bits of him in flashbacks are not enough.

I think that's my main issue here. There's not enough screen time for Hua Cheng's history. Maybe mxtx could have used it as a device to weave their stories together, like how near they are to each other yet so far. Just us seeing things from Xie Lian's perspective is not enough. We saw Xie Lian's fall from grace but we did not see that much how Hua Cheng emerged to the top, and how he has gotten too OP.

I also like how there's a bit of comedy in the form of Mu Qing and Feng Xin. Two clowns. The comic relief. Also why hasn't anyone from the immortals offered Wind master a bath?

Anyway Hua Cheng is the crimson guy who's a walking green flag, and Xie Lian deserves all the love and devotion in the world. They're sappy and cheesy (and too vanilla) but at least it's a happy relationship.

The thing I'm most glad of is that I'm finally done reading and my torment is over. MXTX though does not disappoint with her meticulously written gore and violent scenes (something I actually enjoy) but some people may find this triggering, so watch out. <<less

A book I hold close to my heart and set time aside to reread.

The characters are compelling, the plot expansive, and how everything slowlyclicks into place through piecing together past and present is very satisfying and led to many surprised but impressed moments where I had to pause and appreciate what just happened.

The relationship is a large part, but in no way does it consume the story, rather it is underlying everything in ways you may not first notice. The bond the characters experience is more than a relationship, it... more>> is all the experiences and choices that were made while both together and apart. It is one of if not my favorite relationship I have ever read about.

Highly recommend. <<less
