Rare plot, unique MC, an interesting world; everything that could develop into a great story is here. In Otherworldly Evil Monarch, we will see a one-of-a-kind MC that actually works with his mind instead of brute strength. His past life has quite an impact in the way he make choices in his new life, and so we won't see someone who is still bumbling around looking for guidance and means to cultivate. Certainly one of the best script for xianxia. However, I've got two... more>> major complains here. First is the pace. Again and again, the author took too much space for superflous explanations. And the second is the myriad coincidences that happened, which the author unnecessarily tried to justify here and there. But, admittedly, there's still a long way forward, and I've got high hopes for this one. <<less

It is really slow placed and there are rarely any tense moments that makes you remember this story. Really, while I write this review I already forgot the names of the main characters, they just don’t leave an impression on you.

Mostly the story is about clan struggles, mind games/politics. Not that it’s bad but it can be seen as bad if you see how the author does that. The struggles between the clans are neither important nor really interesting (A stole from B, C and B try to argue with... more>> A, A groups up with D).

Also, the story is sometimes really weird, the MC just goes on a stroll and finds a light, which makes him a lot stronger than others. Just like that, no explanation where, why and how etc.

Quite boring in my opinion <<less

I don't know why the rating of this gem-like novel is so low considering that most of the tr*sh novels are rated so high, don't believe that it's a perfect novel, it has its flaws but its one the better novels out there and I have read a lot, both web and traditional novels.

It deserves like 4.2 stars but I will give it 5 to balance out idiotic reviews.

Really enjoyed this story- the humor, the cast, and the cleverness was enjoyable to read. Probs one of the best in the genre.

However the story goes bad when the power levels go crazy- because then your favorite characters stop getting as much screen time. When certain characters leave the plot, it’s just not as interesting. Also I think some of female romance interests feel forced into the narrative.

Damn, I didn't like it overall. But it does have some interesting parts and a lot of really funny scenes, the problem is that all of that is overshadowed by the obscene amount of MC nationalism, sexism and racism with which the novel is written. Also the power-ups are absurd, an MC who was a human with no special abilities, except being an exceptional assassin of his generation managed to transmigrate and his "mu*derer aura/bloodlust" scares veteran cultivators who have lived hundreds/thousands of years.

The only good points that I salvage... more>> are the interactions between the MC's harem, normally the CN novels portray these women as completely loyal and that they will always accept whoever the MC wants to add as a wife, here at least there is a small plot of acceptance, rejection, discussion, etc But I still HATE this genre.

There is a very strange point in the novel, the MC is clearly a contemporary of Earth, but during the first 1/4 of the chapters he mentions cultivation things like levels, internal energy, meridians, spiritual herbs from his past life.

I give it 3 stars mainly because of the funny scenes that have made me laugh a lot, and because the author did manage to finish the novel without leaving plot holes (very rare in these novels with 1000+ chapters) <<less

It's good in the beginning, then quality goes a little down midway but the ending is good.

Spoiler

In other harem genre novels, MCs collect girls like they are collecting Pokemons. I like how this MC is harem seeking but doesn't go hunting for women like MCs from the other novels. He settles down with his wives in the ending.

Hell this actually took me 3 weeks to read 1200 ish chapters. The chapters are long an full of details. Thats one of the things I like about this novel.

The downside was the bloody harem and alot of these useless girls that have to be taken in without needing them. I don't mind love but carrying baggage all the time is really annoying

Jun Mo Xie is so shameless! ha that mouth can kill you without making a move, I like it so much, watch him cursing people and acting so... more>> shameless that made them spurting blood. Is one of my favourite things in the novel.

The novel feel very hot blooded, many men hormones detects from the way they speak and conduct themselves. Transmigrating to a General household will do that to you! I often feel fire up and engaged in these dialogues because how hot blooded they are.

I like they also Incorporated schemes and plots into the novel but mostly that was for early on in the Kingdom, when MC was still weak afterwards it's power bombs left and right and enemies acting like ret*rds 80% of the time.

I do wish they go back in chapters where they include modern chapters where we go back and visit his old life, but that's just a tiny wish of mine.

The character Li... Ran could have more plot about him, I always feel hes the biggest threat but he lacked cultivation. He would be the biggest boss in the novel unfortunately they didn't go that route. I also felt he was the only qualify enemy for Jun Mo Xie, everybody else has an IQ of nearly close to 0.

I feel my mind is so tired reading all these details about alot of things, it need a long rest at this, so for people who will read this novel, They should consider how time they need to spend go through it all. I think it's worthy it, you get alot of laugh out of it and feel the emotions it conveys. I like this novel, cultivation system is pretty clear, doesn't need to be too complicated. The plot was good for 1200 chapters, it was paced well. Anyway just damn Harem! I hate harems ruin alot of things.

Also Evil Monarch there's nothing evil about him hehe. Well unless when it come to somethings.. <<less

It took me three try to get into this novel, because the beginning feel like the usual Chinese isekai, but 70 chapter in, and I'm hook. The side character are not all brain less, and the way a character act just make sense to me. This is a writing from an experience Author, and doesn't feel like a rush work and need pumping out everyday. Hopefully, it will stay at this quality.

Long time lurker in Novel Updates but now I had to register to review this.

Most of the 5 star ratings are based on first ¼th of the book. And I admit it was good read with interesting world build and plot spiced with decent humor.

But dear god how it took turn to worse. Helel and rincewind summed it up well in their reviews. This is definetly the most cringy sh*t I have ever read. The amount of misogyny is through the roof. Started with aphrodisiac r*pe but later on it... more>> was just pure raping just because they were "his women". MC is extreme hypocrite but this is conveniently dodged with MC spouting "I'm not a good person" left and right. This is even worse as author likes to use multiple chapter long moral debates as filler which highlights the moral hypocrisy (both MC and the other debatee). And the cherry on the top of this crap cake is the utter and blatant hate towards japanese as a race.

I waded through this book as I hate to quit mid book. Due to that I would give this 1.5 stars if the site allowed half star ratings. <<less

The beginning was rather cringe-worthy; but later one it got better. Quite verbose, but as expected of Xianxia web novels. The cultivation, both ranks and the process are okay, but not great. The plot is okay -- pretty much everything happens in one world, including political intrigue, assassinations, small-scale battles, and even a large war.

I am a bit torn. There were some truly bad parts, like weird h*mophobia and sort-of misplaced and irrational Japanese hatred. There were really awkward parts like puerile descriptions of s*xual attraction and even fart jokes.

On... more>> the other hand there were some really poignant moments, and more than a few places where I laughed out loud.

On the whole, I am glad I read this novel; but I have to acknowledge its faults. <<less

If you love ruthless MC that is not scared to fight people many folds his strength, you'll love this. He's also someone that is not scared to show his strength unless the MC knows he'll be in disadvantage.

This novel has no ntr. The harem relationship has no flaws so you'll not get annoyed to the point of dropping. Because of an annoying girls on the harem

This also has alot of poems/songs/etc. This is probably beautiful in chinese but since this is translated, it's kinda off and complicated to understand.

You will... more>> not get bored on every chapters, although rarely there's one chapter just for explaining some things regarding the story for readers to grasp the story knowledge, but it's not really boring.

This novel is 8/10.

It's not 10/10 since it feels like not enough. (The ending)

But I'd say this is really a beautiful novel. The Author is smart and does not miss any logic in terms of schemes, etc. Every detective like comprehension is really awesome and you can feel the cleverness of everything. <<less

Pretty much enjoyable overall, but the ending is a bit rushed which make the story have a vague ending. The last battle is very rushed and the author just sloppily write whatever plotlines left in the story to end the novel quickly. Wish the author extend the epilogue, or better, the story itself, so readers didn't have to imagine every vague points in the stories.

I really enjoyed most of this novel and found the MC and most of the characters pretty well written and believable. What also sets this novel for me apart from a lot of other cultivation novels I've read so far is, that there's not a lot of very big plot-holes or forgotten characters in this novel. There's very few and most of them are not really worth mentioning.

I also think that besides not having a romantic focus that the novel handled the Harem aspect of the story pretty well. A... more>> lot of times the MCs in novels like this just collect beauties like shiny coins and they lose their personality and individuality very quickly and don't resist much, when the MC goes onto collecting more beauties. This pro is also a bit of a con for me, because
Spoiler

in the very late stages of the novel and especially in the end the author stops bothering much with giving the individual girls a voice, except his main wife Mei Xue Yan. Speaking of this; I also felt that adding Han Yanmeng, Qiao Ying and especially Ke'er to the harem was extremely forced and meaningless Han Yanmeng didn't really have a deep connection to the MC and their relationship might've progressed behind the scenes, but the reader never got to see that, except for some jokes between the two and her mother basically gifting her to the MC. Qiao Ying was addition to the harem even more annoying and felt forced to the extreme. The build up to her joining was good, but then it was basically lost in the rush to the ending, where she's suddenly one of his wives and it's just an established fact. The most frustrating addition to the harem for me was Ke'er though, because she was a very minor character that the author forgot for the majority of the story and just suddenly reappeared in the late stages of the novel to join the harem. What's even more frustrating is that even with her sudden reappearance, she doesn't even get a single line of dialogue through the rest of the novel. It's only mentioned that she has suddenly good talent and reaches a somewhat high cultivation, which also doesn't really serve any purpose. It really felt like the author had initially some more side stories planned for these few wives, but scraped them later on.

[collapse]

For the last point I have to mention that I didn't like how the author handled the last 10 or so chapters, because it felt like he grew tired of his own story and just wanted to wrap it up, which to be fair happens a lot with these really long cultivation novels, so I already expected it and it didn't really matter all that much to me and doesn't really make me value this novel less. But I still have to say that anyone reading this novel shouldn't expect a satisfying ending. The author does try to wrap everything up somewhat, but it's very compressed and leaves a lot to the imagination.

To be perfectly honest I felt like giving the novel I lower rating, because I was so disappointed in the ending, but since I really enjoyed reading the rest of it, I still feel like giving it 4 stars and I would recommend others to read it and just let their imagination make up a more satisfying ending for themselves :) <<less

If you could read focus only on MC strength progression and don't give a sh*t with the bulsh*t romance in this novel then you can give it a go. But, if you do, please just skip this novel. The females companion for MC in this novel is so cringy and really annoying. And the worse part is... yes... the so famous "forced r*pe" romance will surprise you, yet again.

My favorite Wuxia novel so far. Action, meaningful romance, plot, schemes, and most of all, comedy.

This is the funniest novel I've read. I also urge people to ignore those that keep claiming certain female characters are annoying or the MC's personality is too inconsistent.

I think the female characters introduced and how they've been developed so far are great and reflect upon their character and personalities. Most people also tend to forget that most of these girls are 15-18 in age. Most people also tend to forget that this is set... more>> in fantasy mythical ancient China, and are ignorant of ancient customs of the culture, as well as Confucianism and they complain nonstop about certain things.

The MC character on the other hand, although on the surface it seemed inconsistent, I think it's rather true to character. He basically does whatever he wants to do. Sometimes he want to do this, but sometimes he doesn't, so he doesn't, but when he feels like he want to, he does it.

The novel even referenced several times that humans are sometimes contradicting, and the MC is no exception, because this is true. We also have to keep in mind that this 2nd life of his is entirely a new experience for him, as compared to his first where he literally has no friends.

All in all, just be open minded and don't expect anything as you go in and read and you'll have a good time. I can't keep myself from laughing hard every 1 or 2 chapters, though some humor might only be understood by natives or people who understand Chinese behavior and jokes. <<less

I don't know if I like it. I understand that sometimes the MC has to pretend to be weak but this guy is just something. Idk there's something about when the main character is supposed to be some badass but just acts like a little bit*h ALL the time annoys me. Like why do the Chinese consider this cool? Oh I know, it's art of war right?

Starts off well with interesting premise.

An assassin using his knowledge of human psyche, stealth and effective one hit killing to get his once slowly decaying military family out of their path of extinction.

Its pretty interesting since the story is not someone who can do it all like a lot of other generic novels, he has to use his limited tool kit.

... more>> But very soon that stops being the case, he gets a godly ability that makes all his knowledge of being an assassin unnecessary.

He suddenly is able to conncoct pills thay can do basically everything.

And to top it all off he is suddenly even able to control the 5 elements in a world setting where no one else can.

This novel starts well but very quickly becomes very generic with a marry sue lead that can do everything the plot requires off him.

Read to pass the time, but skip if you are looking for something interesting. <<less

The novel is above average as compared to others in the same genre. I would rate it 4 stars for the first 280 odd chapters. However it is all downhill from thereon.

Some of the major issues as of 800 chapters

1. MC talks a lot but there is very little action in the fight scenes.

... more>> 2. The power levels are too random.

3. The romance (except Mei Xueyan) is just about taking responsibility for different girls in various situations. (I like harems but this one would be better without one)

4. The revenge of the MC (against the silver city and the king) takes very long and is very boring (again lots of talking)

5. The humor also dies down as the story progresses.

some good points:

1. MC is ruthless, op and smart (however sometimes he acts differently)

2. The side characters are better as compared to other similar novels.

3. The story progression for the first 300 chapters is also very interesting.

all in all an above average read. <<less
