This is chuuni done really well. I get the same feeling as watching B rated movies that know they're B rated. But he doesn't ham it up, so the story takes it self seriously enough to not destroy immersion. It's just sometimes the sh*t that the narrator or the MC says just floors me.

The ecchi and mature tags are a bit of an overstatement. Maybe I'm just desensitized.

My biggest complaint is that facts are a convenience and as an extension the pacing is really annoying. At least early in the... more>> novel, the pacing is about 100 chapters per in-world month. This is a way to make MC's progression seem impressive, so regardless of the time it takes to do things, 2 or 3 major things have to happen in a day. Sometimes night is required for a scene (only for aesthetic reasons), but it was still daytime; therefore, it is now night. World mechanics will be show in one way, then explained some chapters later in a way that makes the previous usage impossible. The cultivation systems is sloppy and poorly defined. Specifically the MC's snowflake system is almost not defined at all. As long as you're a forgiving reader, then it is easy enough to overlook these flaws.

The majority of the text is pretty empty. It'll just be the MC thinking about stuff. Sometimes a dialogue will start up and then 7 paragraphs of random text will appear before a response happens. Then there will definitely be some exposition explaining the dialogue. <<less

The identity of the MC is quite cringy, enough for me to address it, especially as he announces it. If you stick with the novel, it becomes berable. Other than that, typical cultivation story. Extra bonus for an ending. Not a, this story was just the start of the adventure or a small part of the universe. The story ends. All jammed in one chapter but its fine.

It is high quality at the beginning, but the author started cornering themselves at the later chapters especially the last 200 show how cornered the author wrote himself in it... at least had a good enough ending.

Spoiler

Due to the lack of diversity and clear hard power system that the established the other characters had, how soft the main characters was made it too easy to dwarf the power. Later, there were characters to address this, the timing was good yet the author did not let the story breathe with the romance and gimped itself.

Honestly almost all chinese novels write horrible female characters, but out of all of them this one has to take the cake. Everything else about the novel is above average for a cultivation novel, but the interaction with his harem and the overall representation of women in the novel is dogshit. If you have nothing else to read like me you could do worse but even then it pissed me off enough to create this account and write my first review.

The story was going good for me until he began getting girls. I'm like seriously disappointed. The harem kinda ruined his character. I would of been fine with one girl and the MC continued in a single but open minded mixed modern mindset. However, the harem ruined the character and the story for me. And why! Just why did the author make him get together with his late brother's fiancee! The wholeness of the novel is not well put together.

*I am ranting why I feel disappointed.

Starts off very interesting. The MC is a ruthless assassin who uses his knowledge and techniques to kill his enemies. He's always working in the dark and is underestimated. There are also some interesting characters and plots and is also pretty funny too. However, as the story goes on the MC seems to become less ruthless in some ways and more of a generic, powerful, harem MC that goes crazy over protecting his family and his women.

I'll have to echo what some of the other reviewers have said about this author. He has too much backstory, info dumping, and doesn't understand that in a fight scene, you don't lock the breaks on the reader as you merrily rewind and go back through with a complete analysis of why each move was done and what for and speculations on who or what could be done to avoid it.

Actually, the best thing would be for a boxer to hit the author with a straight jab and then ask... more>> afterwards, "How much time did you get to think over all options, speculate why or what you could have done, etc. Before the punch hit you?" <<less

This novel started off quite interesting with the MC's transmigration and hiding his abilities. But then as the story progresses, you start to realize there's too much added content to drag out the story. You will especially notice this during fight scenes where the author will put in his analysis of the moves, the spectators at the side will comment on the fight, and the ones involved in the fight will have their thoughts explained. A simple fight scene will thus be dragged out for several chapters.

As a reader that... more>> has been following the Chinese novel translation scene since the beginning, you get to know which novels are truly written well and which ones are info dumps disguised as content. This novel is decent but slowly reaching the useless info content dump category. <<less

Funny in parts. And some interesting possibilities for World building. Unfortunately, the author's execution doesn't measure up to his ambitions. The protagonist is an assassin who behaves like an infantry drill sergeant and thinks at the same tactical level.

And there are lines like, "The wine, on the other hand, was made so that its fragrance would assail one’s nose, but the taste was akin to drinking rice water, not having the slightest hope of making one tipsy!" Which makes me suspect that the author knows Jack about drinking.

Honestly the funniest novel ive read on this site and Ive read a LOT of novels on the website. Theres really nothing wrong with this novel, it sure as hell doesnt deserve any less than 4 stars. The characters are fun and quirky, theres drama, comedy, tragedy, MC is one of my favs ever, love interests are mint, faceslapping and revenge scenes are hilariously satisfying, and there are no overly glaring problems with this novel either so I see no reason for any bad reviews.

Only thing I have a little... more>> gripe about is Dugu Xioayi, I find her pretty annoying, doesnt really have any redeeming qualities and completely regresses into side charcter material when she falls in love with the MC and loses any semblance of a personality apart from being a idiot. Also, Mei best girl. <<less

In the beginning I found it fun to read, and found the MC likeable making fun of enemies and getting into fun situations. However after reading it for awhile, everything got really long winded...... most of the chapters are praising the MC for his insightful moves for like 75% of the chapter, and I'm spending most of the time skipping it.....

Ugghhhh! I really don't know how to rate this novel because I am not into harem, reason why I dropped Martial God Asura, Peerless Martial God, and Against the Gods. After reading past 1000 chapters, the harem thingy did not sit well with me to the point that I got disinterested so I stopped.

But OEM seems to have a different appeal.

I am really bothered by Moxie's ruthlessness as shown in the recent translated chapters but still, I keep on anticipating the upcoming chapter releases. Not to mention the fact that... more>> his harem is starting to fluorish. *Sigh*

Of course, Moxie's future prospects is guaranteed to shock the heavens because that's what's the current events imply.

I guess what keeps me holding on is: I'd like to see Jun Wuyi's happy ending with the Han girl. I am also curious about Moxie's maternal clan and whether his mother will wake up from her coma or not.

Oh yes, it is absolutely because of Jun Wuyi that I stick around! When the time comes that Moxie will leave the kingdom and Wuyi will stay behind, I will have to reassess the events before deciding to continue reading on.

Nevertheless, my enthusiasm about OEM has not decreased the slightest at the moment so there's a possibility that I might stick with it till the end. (^_^) <<less

This Novel undoubtedly deserves 4.7 stars.
This is a novel where the protagonist goes to another world, but it is not those protagonists where else they say "I'm in another world, ah ok" this not he questions himself because he came to this world what he has to do and what he should do.
This author for me and one of the best novels XuanHuan I've read.
At the beginning of this novel and a slow puco but from the ch100, begins the true story.
The protagonist was a cold-blooded... more>> killer, but in this world he begins to want to protect who he loves. <<less

Even if the story is getting better and better, that is not the most important part of the novel. The best part in this novel is the feeling when the main character dare to insult or beat any of his enemy in front of anyone... the feeling of venting your anger with the MC is incredible, specially when each guy deserve it.

Also, the comic part of many situation are really really funny (well done for the author). It was the first time I laughed so much in a novel.

I've read... more>> many novel the last 2 year and this is one of my favorite in terms of writing : it is funny, violent, weird, touching, MC with character evolving and an ancient family to protect.

Ps : some time the character goes into insult mode in is head and talk a bit to much but that's a small issue. <<less

Like everyone else said, the MC progression it slow, like real slow...

When MC is not being funny, he is boring. The female leads seem to treat him/look at him as tr*sh.

Just waiting for the MC to pop off for once. Even if he only does it at night and no one will know about it, I will be satisfied.

... more>> I will read for awhile longer and see if the MC will turn interesting or if he is just continue being a bullsh*t luck MC

On a side note the Old Man is my favorite character so far in this novel

EDIT:

It got better the most I read. I also like the MC acting shameless as well as the power progression. after I got through something like 260 chapters. <<less

Short Summary:
Great story about the best assassin of modern day that dies after trying to return a artifact only to die and be reborn in the body of a good for nothing whom's family is declining greatly. It's up to him to take everything into his own hands and bring his family out of hole they fell in and become the best assassin in this new world too.

Pros:
Interesting MC (extremely cold hearted)
Good supporting cast: (large groups of side characters, friend or foe, for the MC to... more>> screw over)
Godly MC planning: (plans everything out extremely detailed or improvises really well)
Lots of action: (many fight scenes with people much stronger then the MC)

Cons:
Everything is too easy: (Every single plan of the MC so far has failed to meet any problems at all)

No one questions the MC: (Whatever the MC says, goes. Even his family just follows without question)

Slow story progression: (274 chapters in and still no major event has really happened)
Conclusion:
The Otherworldly Evil Monarch is a great Wuxia novel if you like OP MCs that loves scheming. Though he is weak he brings down many people much stronger then he based on pure skill or tricks rather then fighting up front. The MC also holds his values very firmly, being the cold hearted assassin he is, while some (myself included) may not be the biggest fan of it, the MC never abandon his twisted views... so at least he's true to himself. However the problem is that
Spoiler

The family of the body he took over is one of a line of great generals. Upstanding generals that stands for the people. Yet they easily accepts the MCs doings (though he never really tells them much.) They just basically told him to do what he needs to do no questions asked even though they know he's personality is the COMPLETE opposite of his families.

[collapse]
because of what's in the spoiler, it makes it hard to believe in the way some of the characters act since it's, well, out of character for them one can say. But even though this may bug many people (including myself), the story itself is very well written with lots of funny and tense moments. Overall, it's a very well written story just some parts of it is hard to imagine would actually happen if they are real people. <<less

Not bad but not really my style of novel. There's more to the story than rushing to the next power level and beating up all things offensive to the MC's eyes. But reading as he talks his way past omega level experts, chapter after short chapter, is IMO like watching SS goku battle it out with Freeza over the fastest way to complete an equation... idk

At present I'm in 214th chapter I mean I'm keeping up with updates, at 1st when I took up the novel to read I thought it might be boring only blood sheds and slaughter but never thought it will be this intersting, I really this novel and among so many I have read none is this much fun to read, MC is really sly, brilliant, his strategies r awesome, hez really funny too at the same time dominating. What I really luv d most is dat his tacky ideas and... more>> how he resolves things, romance is weak I mean it's yet to develop but I never got bored, I'm really in luv with mc? <<less

Anyone owes it to themselves to at least try the first few chapters, especially if you're in a downer mood. Of course, humor is subjective, but the amount of joy and laughter the first few chapters gave me is enough for me to remain patient with this novel for a long time. I've already spent a lifetime of laughter, 8 chapters in.

Second reason to try this out? The author, so far, seems to be a very talented (or practiced) individual. Scenes and events are very well described, and every sentence... more>> proves that the author (so far) knows what he's doing. Sentence structure and flow is of course also in the hands of the translator! And happily, this novel has found a great one.

However, the pace is quite slow compared to what you might have been used to. I love this, since it gives a greater sense of build up and foundation but some have described the story 'boring' with too many 'filler' chapters. I obviously disagree, but tastes differ.

Highly recommend you check this out. I would say 30 chapters gives you a rough idea of how the novel will play out. (Edit: After reading up till the currently translated chapter 211 within 48 hours, I can safely name this my current favorite novel. Looking forward to starting on the other novels by the same author.) <<less

This novel exemplifies Fengling Tianxia's trademark character and plot development. Although the MC's cultivates at a slow pace, the criticism that the he is weak is largely unfounded. The MC's cultivation level is not indicative of his strength. As is the case in all other xianxias, the MC can fight with opponents who have a higher cultivation level. The reader has to realize that the MC is from another world, and it makes little sense to judge him based on the cultivation level established in the world he currently lives... more>> in. What he cultivates is the Hongjun Pagoda, which is also something that's unique. Tianxia actually utilizes the MC's origin as a master assassin in defining his strength as the MC uses unconventional tactics to triumph over his enemies. Stop obsessing over cultivation levels. <<less
