Six months ago, tens of thousands of black phantom towers appeared all over the world, floating above the cities. Chemists, physicists, religious people… all of them could do nothing.

Six months later, people became used to the towers and no longer paid them attention.

One day, Tang Mo saw a flying insect crash into it instead of going through it. The next day, a sharp and clear child-like voice issued an announcement to all humans.

“Ding dong! November 15th, 2017. The earth is online.”

The black tower’s three iron-clad rules:

1. Everything is explained by the black tower.

2. 6 o’clock to 18 o’clock is the game time.

3. All players, please strive to attack the tower.

I rarely find any bl stories with five star recommendations so it unsurprisingly piqued my curiosity. I love the way the romance was built up gradually without it ruining the story. Everything about the story---I loved it all. There were a lot of surprises, some drama, humour and other elements and what I actually loved most was the fact that the MC and ML stood on equal grounds---although there's slightly a difference---still, I rarely see any stories with that kind of relationship. I often find MC's who are dependent on... more>> the ML and are on the frailer side---I definitely do appreciate those but this one is like a breath of fresh air.

The plot twists are numerous I can say. When reading, I felt as if I was in a rollercoaster of emotions. Definitely recommend it. <<less

A truly excellent survival game story with a side of romance. Awhile back, I remember reading a list review of this novel which described the level of BL as "well, they do have s*x but the metaphor was a bit too strong, I had to read it twice to get it". At that time, I was like "what? How dense can a metaphor be?", but when I reached the scene in question, I LOL'd and realized that that reviewer was exactly right.

My only con with this story - I wasn't... more>> keen on how toward the end, even though everyone was still technically in life-or-death situations, there were no deaths at all in the main cast. The Noah's Ark arc in particular was annoying to me because there were so many deaths, and almost all of them were from filler characters who were all supposed to be of equal strength to the 5 (FIVE) members of the main/supporting cast. Basically there are 13 people on a boat and half of them die, yet everyone we know makes it out alive by the end of the story. <<less

Honestly, this is one of the best BL novels I have ever read. I won’t explain much about the plot, as many other reviews have explained in detail. Give this book a go because frankly the summary ain’t that hot.

After I finished, I spent a long time pondering over why I loved and enjoyed this book so much. At the end of the day, the conclusion I reached was that there were no major plot holes, or almost none at all. The protagonist doesn’t just randomly have/get a new skill... more>> that is introduced when it needs to be used in a scene or something. (An example would be in historical romance novels the empress being like oh foreign diplomats came ah what a coinkydink I did English for years in high school therefore I can now communicate and impress the emperor.)

Similar to the point above, anything the ML finds/earns/wins in the beginning of the novel will get used later on. I won’t list examples, new readers probably would be confused but I’m just saying that the plot is fool proof. Once you find one of these tidbits you just marvel at how amazingly the author managed to plan out this book. It truly feels complete and as if the author mapped out all the story arcs before even writing the first word.

Don’t be daunted by the BL tag, it is a slow romance and there are no very intense smutty scenes (sorry if you into that) but definitely a few obvious hints. The main couple are very very cute.

This is also one of those books that just make you satisfied to the extreme.

i love this book <<less

200/10 recommend

It's a action, survival, puzzle story so it consumes brain cells.

This a slow burn romance, if you don't like that. You can leave through the door.

90% of the story revolves around

the MC and ML surviving games.

The MC is a smart and strong character, so if your expecting a little fluffball who is naive, then nah he ain't one.

The ML is Fu Wendou

Gotta really thank the translator RainbowTurtle <3, good quality translation and daily updates. You can go check our other novels she's translating at her wordpress.

I would have given this absolute gem 5 stars but... NO SMUT!! ?

Otherwise, pure genius. From the games, to the tension, to the horror of how humanity turns ugly, to the budding relationship despite the f*cked up reality...

And the fact that the MC and the ML compliment each other so well...

I. Loved. This. Novel.

But why no smut?! Just sayin' ?

It was a pretty good read. Some games got tedious at times and it can be difficult to follow what's happening without visual help, but it's entertaining to read how the characters solve the games, even if half (most?) of the time it's impossible to guess the solution by yourself because the reader is rarely given the full hints. Or I'm dumb, idk.

There were some stuff that wasn't explained, like ... more>>

who is Eve? Did Tang Mo become Eve? What dream did the people who received Eve's reward see? Why did Mosaic's magic matches have a different function than described? The intercommunication that the tower mentioned for the 5.0 update was only meeting people from other zones in the 6th floor? Does the fact that "humanity went online" mean they can communicate with other civilizations now?

[collapse]

However, most of the important questions were answered, which left me satisfied.

There's little romance in general, as they're mostly focusing on surviving (which is normal and I'd be upset otherwise), but their relationship feels very natural. It's kinda funny to read that "AU where the towers don't exist" extra and compare it to what happened in the main story. Also there's very little uh how to call it, angst? Dog blood? In the sense that yes, a lot LOT of people died, but very few characters the reader cares about did, and pretty much only one (and a half?) character that constantly appeared and hence was important for the storyline died. I'm very sad they couldn't survive but they did have a pretty big death flag in retrospective....

Translation was good and most of the time coherent, only flaws were that there could be a lot of typos and some Chinese phrases/sayings were difficult to understand without explanation. It is a very lenghty novel however, plus it's a free translation, so I understand if it isn't revised.

In any case, it was a fantastic journey and I'd love to see more extras, hope the author writes more someday. <<less

This was one of my first webnovels as well as one of my favorites, so please know that I'm going to be more than a little biased in my review.

I love all of the stories that this author has written, but this one sticks out the most to me. I've come across many danmei stories including quick transmigration novels as well as horror, but action and danmei is a combination I've rarely ever seen. Not only that, but this novel does it extremely well.

The plot is probably what I liked... more>> most about the story, and the author developed it really well. The BL is just a subtle undertone, what you can make out from it gives you high levels of fluff. I'll admit, my brain hurt a little when reading this novel. The logic used in the contraptions involved in this novel was probably too much for my minimal IQ. There's no sudden, confusing plot twists though, everything builds up nicely to highlight a certain point.

The translator did a really nice job, praise the translator for being able to phrase the information in such an easy to understand way. They also really spoiled us with the number of chapters that were released a day.

The characters were really nicely depicted, and I even grew attached to some of the most annoying side characters. MC and ML had great dynamics, slower on the relationship side but worked together well. I absolutely adored everything about the two, even if I had almost fossilized by the time they actually got together.

The ending of the story wasn't the best, but it was quite satisfactory. It tied up the novel well, but I can't help wanting more ww

Would I recommend this novel? 120%. Yes. Even if you're wavering on whether or not you want to read it, I think you should just give it a shot. It was really cute.

Not much I can say which hasn't been said already. The novel is fun and engaging, but harrowing. Fans of works such as Liar Game, Gantz, or Death Note will feel right at home.

It follows the story of MC Tang Mo as Earth is plunged into a depraved death game. Black towers descend all around the world, and humans must attack these as well as numerous scattered instances, participating in utterly depraved logic games under the sadistic watch of creatures based on Earth's collective lore (such as Santa or Cinderella... more>> or Mario) that utterly delight in human suffering. Some of these scenes and situations aren't for the faint of heart. Under the constant threat of death and getting pitted against each other for simple survival, other humans become just as dangerous as the games. The story follows Tang Mo as he barely survives these games/encounters and unravels the mystery behind events.

The games are really interesting, but admittedly difficult to follow. I often felt that a visual aid would improve the clarity of what occurs significantly.

The distrust and tension between fellow humans resulted in dangerous situations in addition to the games as the ugliness of human nature are brought to fore. We are introduced to a number of side characters through these that become and remain relevant throughout the novel: some good, some bad, most morally gray and ruthless out of necessity. Many of them are incredibly distinct, memorable, and just as powerful/important as the main character and the ML, which was a welcome surprise.

Speaking of, the relationship between the MC and ML was a delight. It brought much needed levity (through their mutual awkwardness) to the events of the story. Their silent understanding and support of each other was always nice to see, even if they're both rather cold on the outside. It was definitely a slow-burn and largely stayed in the realm of PG13. Some of the relationships they develop with other people were also rather heartwarming.

All-in-all, I definitely recommend this. But be warned that it can get pretty disturbing. The writing is also kind of dense/opaque during the 'logic' portions. <<less

The thing to know about the ‘Games’ of this novel is that “the black tower never lies, but everyone else can, ””the punishment isn’t death, but you can die if your own skills aren’t’t good enough” “there is always some way for ‘you’ to win” and lastly “there is always more than 1 way to complete a game

The games are vey I’d say “Indian jones” like, you have traps and enemies trying to kill you, but the main way to win is to solve the puzzle or riddle locking you... more>> up. But if you don't have the stamina to avoid the knife at your back, your not gonna get very far, ya know?

All of ‘games’ are puzzle\riddle solving based, but it is an action novel. Some games are more obvious then the others, I found that the more you read it, the easier the games became, possibly because you get used to thinking like the protags. “Snowvilla” and “Where is schrodinger's Cat” were crazy easy, and were both after like the 90th chapter, in comparison to the first 30+ games where I was like “what”

As someone who is Ace, this is a really great novel! The characters fall in love because they enjoy each others personality, rather then that Victor has some nice as muscles. wiggles eyebrows

#Relationship goals. They are Adorable.

They don’t really go into details when the characters final end up together (as in, once they are together, it doesn’t go into detail about the physical aspect of their relationship, only insinuates it, it focuses more on the mental aspects of trust and stuff. They are described kissing like 3 times) All in all, was a fun read, and I enjoyed it. I loved the characters and I found the book both sad and funny at times. <<less

Definitely, one of the best novel that I've read.

Just look into the other reviews they're reliable.

Tips: Because it is already a finished novel, make sure to savor every chapter while you're reading it.

The translation, I think it took one year and in my experience, I binge read it for only four days so beware just in case you feel missing this novel after you finished reading it.

Ding dong~ Good luck!

"..... "

This book was one of the most novels that actually left a deep impression me. I'm not arrogant enough to call myself a veteran reader. However as a reader who read web novels, fanfiction, and other genres for 4-6 years, I guarantee you that this novel is worth reading. Though my opinion may differ from other readers for this novel, Please give it a try!

The ending was bittersweet like one of the previous reviews said and my heartstrings were pulled. The only ending that can actually make me cry... more>> are the bittersweet endings. And this one was definitely at the top of my re-reading lists of books.

For those who were discouraged by the summary, don't worry you're not the only one. I, too, thought the plot was bad and was quickly slapped in the face. And for those who think the length of the novel is to long, I also thought that too and you can quickly guess what happened.

Cheers for the the remaining (players) humans!!! <<less

The Earth Is Online is simply one of THE best books I've ever read. The romance, the setting, the characters, the plot, it's pacing, the translation, it was all brilliant and unbelievably compelling. Full on gushing and crying mode because I'm glad I finished it but sad at the same time.

I enjoyed every aspect of this story, but here are some highlights:

  • Characters (even side characters and villains) operate like realistic individuals
  • MC and ML are cute together and have a healthy relationship
  • The plot (especially setting) has been thoroughly thought out
  • Story arcs are engrossing and paced well
  • The writing is clever – we’re given enough clues to figure things out on our own (if you’re clever enough)
Other notes:

  • The romance is discrete and a bit awkward but it works better in the background rather than a focus in this story anyways
  • Be prepared for loose ends. Nothing major, but I’ll be thinking about them for a while... mostly I just want a sequel

very good story, though not my favorite MCH novel. Love the clever MC and ML and how in tune with each other they are. My only problem was that sometimes a single game would take forever to get through and it got a little irritating (i skipped the middle part of several games that were many, many pages long because I wanted them to get on with things already).

over all it's worth the read but because some of those games stretched into infinity (or so it felt) I can't give... more>> it a perfect five. It certainly worth reading though. <<less

I honestly would give this title a near perfect score, and it's on my list of top novels

The MC and the ML are an OP power couple. The romance is very, and I mean very, very slow burn (If you think MDZS is bad, you've got another thing coming lol) . But it is such a satisfying, slow building relationship that I really don't mind it.

Their interactions are adorable and their personalities compliment each others well. They are not overly soft towards others, but you can tell they are really... more>> fond of each other, and have developed an unbreakable trust in a time of such uncertainty. And while the novel may make you feel like an idiot for not being able to understand the logic of the MC and ML in clearing the Black tower's games, it's very quickly forgotten and replaced by the awe you feel for the author. (Like how they can come up with this content is beyond my small mind and I praise them for their wit and imagination)

I will also gladly mention an antagonist who makes the story better imo but whom other people seem to hate immensely lol. Most notably, a character that seems to have a death wish, while simultaneously not wanting to die... like seriously if you don't want to end up six feet under, stop messing with the power couple. BUT.... that and his messed up personality and the way he acts just makes me love him as an antagonist. <<less

Best story I have read so far. Instead of most Bl stories this story gives you a sense of thrill. The action the story has is amazing

Especially the black tower bosses. They are funny and really makes you change your perspective on fairy tale characters.

The one part that makes me sad is how smart all the characters are. But it is agreeable cause they wouldn't be able to survive without their intelligence.

I came for no I stayed for the action

Very nice, this is a cool story. The world is crazy, the abilities are crazy and the mini-games are crazy. I really like it, it is very innovative and funny, but also cruel and terrifying. One last thought: The whole BL thing is unnecessary for the story, but it is tame, so its safe to read.

I just want to remind to strengthen your cognitive functions to get along the pace of black tower's logic games, and conversations between brilliant characters or you will be dumbstruck by any plot turns.

Plots are not like frustrating random twists as all details are mentioned beforehand. Just stay eye-sharped and don't miss out any information the author described, also run your brain like mad to imagine all possible scenarios at the meantime.

Romance is realistic enough for me but sometimes their tacit understanding makes your heart cry in silence lol

A fore-prepare... more>> a pen and paper to scribble on in case you can play along when it comes to detailed grid games. The whole plot seems well-fabricated (I haven't finished it whole) but I can tell the author can handle it.

It even inspired me to learn more about logical reasoning. It's also freaking addict-able and stimulating that I even craved it for three days and one full night.

To conclude is that this is not average type of novel that you go flow with it.

good luck with your own read and enjoy the adrenaline rush, ah! <<less
