Grabbing Your Hand, Dragging you Away

I am a princess, moreover, I am a fool of a princess.

Born in the imperial palace, my appearance is as average as that of the white radish and cabbages in the fields. Throughout the four seasons of the year, my face is always displaying a dull expression, eyes forever shrouded in haze.

But in reality, I know of the secrets within this palace.

Including hers, his, and theirs.

Just leisurely living my days comfortably in the palace like this, I firmly believe I can continue to play dumb to the end.

Taking your hand, dragging you away. Not leaving, you say? Very well, close the doors and release the hounds. (Expressionless face)

MC is reborn to ancient era with memories of her previous life intact. In her current life, she becomes an unfavored princess of Yun Mi kingdom. For her own survival in the imperial palace, she decides to act foolish (I admire how she can act foolish flawlessly until 15 years without any misshap). But unconciously, she's caught in the three kingdom's scheme and no longer can act as a passerby anymore.

I feel complicated about this novel. Somehow I enjoy the plot, but:

Spoiler
  • I think none of the male characters in the novel deserve MC (including ML). They practically harrass MC almost everytime they meet without her consent. It's a miracle that MC could keep her purity intact until her marriage.
  • So many side characters are introduced but few of them get a closure. Somehow they just vanish into a thin air without any further stories.

I really did like it even if it did have a few loose ends. The MC is great, as for the ML.... well I'm an unforgiving person so I wasn't really taken with him.

IF THESE BOTHER YOUS SKIP

They're cousins

... more>> There's noncon and dubcon but not r*pe

The translation is really good, just one thing to note, the first 2 extra ch in the end were mashed together but it doesn't really matter because they're not even set in the main story.

I really loved that MC isn't OP in any way, she's not put on a pedestal by her father or has all the gifts, or an amazing talent at something. She really is just a leisurely person, and even chubby, tho only implied, yet still called ''somewhat pretty but not an outstanding beauty'' so long as she isn't trying to blend herself into the wall. She never takes her lack of outlandish good looks as something that makes her incompatible with the ML or considers him being with a prettier girl as a better outcome. She absolutely knows what she wants and has no intention of compromising. Also, she does admit to not being exclusively into the ML.

The reason I gave it 3* was the fact that the parts that were unsaid kinda annoyed me.
Spoiler

Like, the friend, got nothing on her in the end, poofed away even tho she was labeled as an important person to the MC and her only friend. What happened to ML's dad? Who we were told super duper dotes on and is loved by the ML? What about all the subjects under the ML who are for a few ch talked about as background couples but then just poof away? What about that whole traveling ark that had them collect those super duper secret talents but who just poofed away after being collected even tho it seemed as if they were going to be involved with the plot? And what of that girl that was in love with ML but raised friend flags before poofing away? As you might notice poofing away is a real problem here. Just to note, all this poofing away is very natural and probs won't be noticed by a lot of ppl because it just kinda organically happens. Also like, in the beginning, when she is sold into servitude, no way would no one notice the quality of her clothes and accessories. Like, even tho she herself is actively trying to look plain so it'd be easier for everyone to believe she was not all there, she's still an imperial princess and the quality of the fabric she wears, and the way it's colored, and the colors themselves would give away the fact that she was no ordinary girl. Like, even if the kidnapper thought she was only like, a merchant's daughter, there's no way the Meng household wouldn't notice, that she has some kind of status.

[collapse]
There's more, but getting more and more annoyed the more I think about it so I'll stop here.

Reading this I hope I didn't discourage people from reading, cause I do recommend it. The reason it's 3* is the noncon/dubcon and the loose ends taking 1* each. <<less

After reading a bunch of webnovels set in ancient China with palace intrigue and romantic involvements with the Emperor, I had expected the same formula. This novel subverted all the common tropes while still remaining strangely grounded in court politics. Interestingly enough, the MC's identity as a "useless" princess really takes the cake. The author clearly separates the plot into various arcs which helps showcase the potential love interests. I actually enjoyed this setup where AhLan acts convincingly as a fool without fail; it's a test of love. The ML... more>> is not cemented until way later, but I loved that the love he had for AhLan was so steadfast and fervent throughout the turbulent times of separation and war. They're surprisingly well-matched and it's a really nice HE if you consider the fact that they got what they wanted which is ultimately a peaceful life. <<less

This is a great read! Character development is so good. Albeit, I really want more ML and MC moments. I loved the prologue, it was really the most greatest of encounters. All main characters present. I laughed so mich because of MC's remarks. She really knows how to make people speechless. She also has great wisdom. In between her 'foolish' remarks lies an undercurrent of guidance. I think it's because of what she had gone through in the past and present. This was a great read.

If you wanna know who... more>> the ML is:

It's Yuwen Rui.

I havent finished this as I am putting it down temporarily to read another story translated by the same translator and I like how different it is in terms of the beginning circumstances of the MC I think I know who the ML is but I am unsure. I don't really like any of the guys introduced so far in the story enough to be like "OMG IT MUST BE HIM" so at this point I am open to new or whomever it ends up being.
Spoiler

That said omg her past life. That chapter made me so angry on behalf of her hah. I would bit*h slapped the whore.

Grabbing Your Hand, Dragging You Away is a great, well-written novel and can be recommended to anyone who loves romance novels, especially beginners and ones who doesn't like too much harem. The romance was crazy but stable at the same time. The harem genre was bearable and brought spice to the drama of the story. It was light hearted, but serious at the same time. The plot was so good and well thought. All of the events that happened had their reasons and there were instances that you know that... more>> something should be happening but it's not, so it makes you even more into it. Kudos to the translators, they really did a great job. <<less

This is my ultimate favorite light novel. Atypical female MC, mentally quite strong with comedic commentary, living life as she pleases without an attachment to anything but meat and grapes. The male lead is doting and a black belly with just the right doses of possessiveness and devotion (which is to say over the top). The scenario is beautiful and their growth, especially the mc's is so much fun to watch. Filled with fluffiness and awesome moments.

let's start by saying it's a reverse harem, or at least, there's quite a few who fell for our FL (but there's a ML that will detach himself from the other ^^)

This story was quite a weird read to be honest. For around 15-20 chapters, I was really wondering where does the author want to lead us to. The FL is a reincarnator who decided to play the fool princess role because she wants to have an easy life in the royal court... but mostly because she's lazy xD.... more>> The past life, this time, is used to explain her view on love and why she's trying to keep these kind of feelings far from her.

The story is quite dark, but not overly (

I'm even amazed she managed to keep her purity with all those obsessive-limit-yandere guys around

). Though you'll feel sad for most of the characters, Each characters secret is revealed bit by bit with the story and it really is interesting. It's a shame that somehow, a lot of characters didn't or just couldn't get a character development in the second part of the novel.

The world-building is restrained to 3 countries (it's emperors, so I guess it's more empire) with a strange "no man's forest/mountain in the middle x)

The plot was nice, all the main characters really have tragic life though (every single one of them, seriously, she's like kogoro mouri ? there's problem everywhere she went xD) and most doesn't have a closure to their story... Meh, nothing to care, our couple is lovey-dovey anyway~~

It's a refreshing read with a different style compared to other reincarnated CN FL, recommend if you want a semi-dark ancient time romance. <<less

That was a gorgeous story. A little bit cliche but I really loved it. The character development is absolutely gorgeous. Though the MC is powerless and can't do much but she is strong and determined. A much more realistic MC tbh than a Mary Sue. I loved all the characters in this story. Even after the clichés I couldn't stop reading it. Highly recommended

It'd be 5/5 but..

Good romance and love story with hilarious. FL is so unique time traveller. She has no power of the future nor any OP-ness at all. Make the whole story very interesting..

Until the final part which starts when the most capable, the plot-armored ML is ... more>>

fallen into the trap without any reason at all. He not only survives a month of continuous torture but his face is well preserved.

But worse is : before thatvhappens, the FL changes her character too. Change from very outstanding 'foolish' girl into plain vanilla, dog-blood, FL.

So sad.
[collapse]

Development of the other characters is weird. It could be called half-finished before abandoned and thrown away. Even the 2nd female leads such as her friend, her sister. Not to mention all characters that are supposed-to-be-important. All emotions, interactions, deepness they've developed. All are sudden thrown away. Which raises the big question "WHY" in my mind.

The last chapter is

So, beware and be warned.

BTW, the SS chapter is worst. Draw perfect snake before adding legs to it, sort of.

Although it is very confusing at first, please, please, PLEASE endure.

The story itself is rather confusing, sometimes I did question the FL's actions and occasionally there were moments that seemed illogical for the sake of romance. But those are minor issues. The FL/MC is very refreshing, realistic and not impulsive at all. You'll question why she's so lethargic, but when you know why everything will make sense. The feelings she has are very relatable, I teared up ;-;

Not a read for those who want quick romance or action.

The main story is disappointing. Perhaps it is because I do not like who she ended up with. MC acts like fool, but later on stops acting like one. She changes from being lazy and carefree to someone who would be weak for a man. She is paired with 3 different men and each of them are given a few chapters to develop the ship. However, the flow is flawed, because she had already chosen someone even before some of the ship started. I personally do not like who she... more>> ended up with and did not enjoy how she fought for it. The side stories are not bad though, it shows you MC's life in the modern times and her life after the main story ended. <<less

I enjoyed this story very much.

I found that this is the first transmigration story in which the female lead does have to worry about her life being in danger due to her family wanting to kill her off or she is being forced into a marriage that she doesn't want.

It is interesting that she plays a dull character which gets ignored but later becomes the person that everyone wants.

I like how the first chapter sort of gives an overview of all the key characters in the female lead's life and... more>> how they are all linked to her. <<less

The story is nice, it is well formatted, the characters have character development and backstory, and the translation is great. The interactions between the MC and the ML are sweet. I think pretty much all the important characters had good backstory, had their own reasons for their actions, and are likable because of the author. The MC is smart with putting on a s*upid act and her "weird and interesting" acts are what attracts others to her. She doesn't have an OP skill, but she does have a clear mind... more>> (except for the things she wants to turn a blind eye to) in what she wants.

This critic is just personal for me, and I am writing this to just mention something to future readers that doesn't like the MC attracting all these boss characters.

My only problem with this story is the mc's attitude. In the beginning it was interesting how she acts with her apathetic display and how she is able to handle situations because of her wittiness/cleverness, but then it got annoying for me because of her lack of appreciation and response to things and also the amount of times she got taken advantage of, though that isn't entirely her fault since she is weak. I was running out of patients for this extremely stubborn female protagonist.

Spoiler

The MC just reminds me of Enchantress Amongst Alchemists's MC with how they both treat the ml. Especially with this line, "Should I love somebody again, I must have that person love me to the bones first, their eyes unable to hold anyone else at all, must have him remain firm and unyielding, no matter how many obstacles are faced, he wouldn't change his original intentions, no matter if he loves me or hates me, he mustn't bear to leave me behind." Really arrogant... I think this is fine, but she doesn't even really fights back (try to escape) and hate the other male leads (that have a love interest with her) even though they are using her, which means that she will still have some part of her heart occupied with the other male characters (with love interest for her) with the amount of time she spent with them and also the times she has been "taken advantage of" by them. I find this a little hypocritical since she wants her lover to give her everything, but she won't be ruthless to fend bugs off her. The male characters all have their backstory and are all pretty likable though. The two novels are the same where the ML easily forgives the MC when they are jealous, which I think they are for good reason.

[collapse]

Since the MC is weak, of course she is going to attract trouble to herself and the ML has to save her each time, but it got a little tiring. I'm sorry to say but, I personally don't like this aspect of the story where the MC keeps getting saved by the ml, but still doesn't appreciate him until waaaay~ later. This is just a small problem I have with the story though, because she later learns to love him. But besides this point, I completed this novel and gave it a 5 star because the story was satisfying in the end and I would recommend this with the warning. The part I was annoyed with may not be agreeable to everyone and that is why I'm not taking a point off. <<less

A very refreshing novel to read. The greatest strength lay in the first 2/3s of the novel in my opinion. The pace is almost meandering but Ah Lan's narration, the witty dialogue, and the subtle tension makes it very compelling to read.

Ah Lan is one of my favourite female leads of all time, her narration, her thoughts, her subtle cynicism of the world that she hides beneath her carefree attitude- I enjoyed her as a main character very much. She is genuinely a very normal person who went through a... more>> horrific betrayal and was thrown suddenly into a completely different time, she appears carefree and uncaring but beneath that is a very subtle sharpness that provides unique insight into her character. Some people may dislike her but she's the best part of the novel. (Until she changes around 4/5ths in but well, whatever)

The main male lead was alright. I wasn't a big fan but he was one of the better ones compared to the other male leads. Tbh, ah lan had more compelling relationships with other side characters (and side male leads even if I didn't like them) But whatever I want her to be happy and he does that.

The strength of this novel is the characters interactions. The dialogue, hidden or outright, the character interplays- solid.

All in all, a good novel <<less

Truly a great novel, was hooked right fron the start. It’s unlike other novels where the MC, from bad looking to suddenly unworldly beautiful fairy princess and all. I love how she chose to be aloof to somethings but still manages to be part of something big and oh let’s not forget how she manages to effortlessly capture the hearts of a few great men.

*SLIGHT SPOILER* - :v
... more>>
Spoiler

First half of the story was really entertaining. The MC, who is a princess pretending to be a fool in order to live peacefully, goes off to have fun and pretend to be a maid/servant to a wealthy family. The whole situation/pretense was enjoyable to read as it felt like a light novel. It is also a nice change of pace from those transmigration OP cultivation/revenge-vengeance stories since in this one, the MC doesn't really care for power/wealth/love.

While the second half of the story where we really get into the nitty-gritty details of the ML/side characters/palace intrigue-politics, it became less interesting. Compared to the light tone of the first half, the second half of the story is more serious with physical/mental stress going back and forth. In fact, the further on I read, the more I got the feeling that the MC suddenly turned into a Mary Sue character where almost all of the male characters fell in love with the MC. And it wasn't those sweet love-from-afar types, but rather the kidnap-lock up types of obsessive love which just made the plot lose its comedic undertone, especially since all the politics started rolling in. How should I say it, I think the story kind of lost its purpose halfway through, but at least it's a happy ending for our MC and the side stories successfully tied up the ending, so overall, I am satisfied. I would recommend this novel for those who are looking for a way to pass time, just don't expect too much fluffy moments or heated battles cause there were little to none. Oh, but there was one torture scene that I think was kinda funny, because honestly, who uses blood-sucking leeches as a torture tool? I was thinking of more like burning/whipping/beating/salt water pouring/caning/cutting or something similiar, but a leech??? Whelp, I just can't wrap my brain around it.
