Rebirth of a Movie Star

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

In his previous life Bai Lang was a small star. He rejected his boss and foolishly engaged in a relationship which he thought was true love.

He didn’t expect that he would get betrayed, die of a heart attack and trouble his boss to accompany him on his last journey.

After his rebirth, he decided to give up on true love. As for his boss… since he wants something then just let him have it.

So this little star after his rebirth collected his boss, and then it became a true love story with his boss.

In between there are good friends/love rivals/scum men in the mix. A sweet story with a happy ending.

Overall rating: 3.9.

No loose ends (or perhaps there is one, but he's insignificant enough for me to care what happened to him). Not really a revenge story - more like "since I was given another chance, I'll live my life more happily and freely, in a way that I won't leave regrets while staying true to my beliefs" kind of story.

Love the MC, though I feel that he's a bit goody two shoes. Scenes with the pair of cute small darlings are specially fun to read.

If there is one take-away... more>> that I got from this, it's that the Chinese really paint their country's entertainment circle in a dirty and bold manner - this is the tenth book that I've read which involves China's media industry as the setting and they all have such views regarding the entertainment sector. Because of this repeated viewpoint, I didn't enjoy it much, but it's an okay read.

Lots of notes too midway translated chapters - they're a bit distracting to the story, so please arrange them properly next time Mr./Ms. Translator. <<less

Very sweet and satisfying. While it does dip somewhat into tropes, the characters are all relatively fleshed out to a reasonable degree, making their journey a joy to read. Would recommend if you're into stories more focused around valuing a chance to start over rather than the more revenge fueled entries in the genre. The bad people get their just desserts, but it's not focused on nearly as much as other novels.

In the midst of all these glowing reviews, I probably expected too much out of this. What was probably stopping me from enjoying this novel to the fullest is how the MC seems utterly glued to the golden thighs of the ML in almost every waking moment of his reborn life. Half of this issue stems from the ML's typical possessiveness, he embodies almost every cliche you could think of in a danmei ML.

There was absolutely no tension or build up climax throughout the story, because, here, the MC's redeeming... more>> qualities are overshadowed by the novel's insistence to have every stumbling situation dealt with by the ML. The feeling I had the ENTIRE time reading this was more 'Sit back, relax and watch the MC take few steps forward, oh, those enemies? Not to worry, ML's busy face slapping them on and off screen, kthanx. Villains came off flat, and the supposed final boss of the story was unrealistically built up and went out with a whimper. I felt nothing the entire time.

When the story doesn't focus on the ML, however, I could appreciate the journey the MC has paved for himself: a life free of revenge, and the determination to right things in his life. (Well, to be more accurate, he doesn't need to focus on revenge, because... the ML was hell bent on getting it for him anyway.) The novel works best when it's just focused on the MC growing in his path to stardom, the development between him and the father/son relationship that was delightful to read, and the fact that the MC is perfectly capable of delivering justice to himself and the people around him without the ML's assistance. It's too bad the novel doesn't utilize this to its fullest.

Overall, this wasn't a bad read, but lacks that special spark that elevates it above other works in the same genre. Not going to read the extras, because by the time I struggled to the novel end, I realized that it was a chore getting there, so this novel is definitely not for me. <<less

I have read this novel four and five times already. So you can think that this is a good novel.

And yes, this is a good novel and I like it.

The characters were reasonable and relatable. There are some dramas that make the story more exciting (don't get me wrong, drama/conflict is necessary in a story. As long as the drama not too dog-blooded, such as misunderstanding between characters that could be solved with just talking, then I still can accept it). And a cute bun too!!!...

Recommended to people who like... more>> to read a story with the above description...

The translation too... YOU DID A GOOD JOB, TANSLATOR SAN!!! With the notes and more explanations. I enyoy it so much <<less

I really love this kind of sweet and healthy story. Not much dog blood drama, not much angsty, vinegar eating, or any other. I like the MC, even though he was reborn and should have make his revenge, he actually doesnt really engrossed himself on getting revenge, and instead enjoying himself more, treasuring every new encounter he makes, and of course nurturing his true love with ML. Though eventually all the characters that need to be getting revenge on are sending themselves on his door, practically asking and provoke the... more>> ML to fulfill the revenge the MC should has. <<less

This is my first time writing a review but I just had to do it.

I don't know why some of the reviews are so critical but for me, this story is one of those that you read again and again.

The MC is not overpowered or overly Mary Sue but he does have the protagonist halo. Putting this aside, his character is the type that I love - calm, has enough IQ, cute but not annoying and he also has this kind of world heaviness after his rebirth that gives his... more>> character more depth. Plus, he's not revenge thirsty but he's not a pushover either. Kind of refreshing for a rebirth story.

The ML is so-so, but his love for the MC covers up his character flaws. There's also his son who's super adorable and makes the story more light hearted.

The translation is also very good. It's not the best story as it does have some plot holes and the author can't remember mob names lmao but do give it a try. (づ ̄ ³ ̄) づ (づ ̄ ³ ̄) づ <<less

Rating: A very positive 3.5 stars!

Review: If I recited the events of the story, it would sound exactly like one of your typical C-Novels with names like "Rebirth of the Film Queen: The CEO's Contract Lover: Spoiling the Young Master's Mother!" Luckily it's a MUUUCH nicer, more moderate and wholesome story, despite there being very little in there that I haven't read in one or another C-Novel Romance or BL about some guy or girl reborn in the entertainment industry.

Overall, this is very pleasant to read: not all of the... more>> villainous characters are completely black, events are sometimes dramatic but not melodramatic, the romance is satisfyingly developed, the MC has a nice balance of intelligence, kindness and strength, the ML (although he initially fits the stereotypical cold, overbearing CEO) is much more moderate and balanced with the MC than I was afraid of, there are likeable supporting characters, and everything is tied up well in the end. I also liked that was only moderate use of superfluous internet comments by fans. The story and writing had almost nothing jarring, except perhaps too long spent in detailing each step of the final villain's downfall (i.e. Too much time not on the main character).

The main reason I rated it 3.5 rather than 4 stars (I rarely rate anything 5) was merely that there was nothing about this story that raised it into something with a special spark. It was very nice to read and I enjoyed it. I could confidently recommend it to other BL readers. <<less

I think this has become one of my favorite novels! Pretty good plot and pacing, the relationship between Bai Lang and Qiu Qian feels very natural and touching despite how their relationship started, the kids are super cute, the translation very easy to read. I think my only complaint regarding the story was the character of Su Quan/Qu Quan, ... more>>
Spoiler

I didn't like him but I feel his potential as a character or even as a villain was wasted, at the beginning I thought he'd be a close overprotective friend who later warmed up to Bai Lang but he turned out to be an opportunist and as delusional as Kang Jian, it's really a shame.

[collapse]

Also I'm really thankful the author chose to tell us what happened to the children in the future! Wish they had their own story, I would love to read more about them. <<less

Ai, as a person who rides the feels train daily I can assure you that this is a very fluffy and realistic story concerning relationships.

Like all reviews stated, the MC is very calm and knows himself well, of course, why wouldn't He? He's been reborn.

The male lead is very handsome and straightforward and his comedic effect along with his son brightens the while story with a pink aura.

The love the MC and ML had for each other was gradual, only starting with a passing interest while the other with suspicion.... more>> Nonetheless, their fate's were entwined in Bai lang's second life and he achieved his happiness he deserved, falling into a love net the ML rougeshly set up, lol.

It's a very good read for pleasure.

Spoiler

some of my favorite scenes include, Qiu Qian telling Bai Lang to say "Who said that my man was your man!" Or something along those lines, to Su quan. Second scene is when Bai Lang and Qiu Qian are walking along the riverbank while camping with the Rong family. Thirdly, when Bai Lang roundhouse kicked that scum guy. And of course, the extras with Xiao Hai and ah zan planing their wedding at Bai Lang and Qiu Qian's wedding. I teared up :,)

11/10 enjoi

P.s. Use your vivid imagination for the vague r18-scenes. The fluffiness allowed the story to get a 5 star from me :) <<less

This a good novel. Really like how this story is more realistic. MC character was calm but he had a deep feelings. He didn't caught up with his revenge after his rebirth, he used his knowledge to change his life to the better.

I like how the ML didn't become so fast to pamper MC after he got him. But try to really got to know him better and understand him first.

I just really appreciate this novel. There's no unnecessary dog blood or drama here. Just try this one, you wont... more>> regret it. The story is short, so it wont take yor time too much. <<less

This is a really good novel! The plot is really well thought of and even though there are small time skips, author didn't forget to reveal what happened in between. Basically, the MC accidentally went back in time and decided to live his life without connections to the people who made his previous life miserable. He has a very good mindset and is level-headed when it comes to his decisions. ML is at first a scum but he fell in love with our MC so he turned into a doting... more>> ML haha. It's good that he isn't too OP, I think this is actually the first time I saw an ML to have a huge misfortune that isn't connected to our MC.

It lost one star because the style of writing isn't my cup of tea. It's mostly narrative and there are only a number of dialogue. The most "talk" we've gotten is from a Forum inside the novel lol. Also, there could be more to the story but the author opted to let it slide

Spoiler

Like who's the mother of ML's child?

Nonetheless, for a 1day read this one of the best. <<less

This is one of the sweetest novel ever. You can get over with the meng scenes of the ML and MC. They are just so adorable. Highly recommended for everyone to read this. Trust me, you won't regret.

However, some parts of the novel are little too dramatic tbh, and some are overly descriptive. So, you may have to skip all those nonsense. Other than that story is simply amazing so far.

New to the danmei world but not new to the the whole reincarnation genre. I really enjoyed this story! It's short for a webnovel (61-ish chapters of the main story + 5-ish side stories), but it was done well. Basic premise is the same as most reincarnation novels, but I liked the application much better. There is some sweet revenge parts but it's not like the MC is completely and utterly obsessed by getting payback. In fact, revenge seems to be a side dish in the MC's intent to live... more>> a better life this time around, and he absolutely has a much better life! I think that the most satisfying part is just how he was able to overcome the hurts of his past life and channel his new self into his new life with the ML and the ML's adorable son.

Romance was written well and realistic, no insta-love here. The relationship developed throughout the story, and the MC and ML discussed any jealousies and issues that came up pretty maturely, which I appreciated since both of them are adults. The ML is the alpha-male, CEO, controlling type but it wasn't so over the top that I couldn't stomach it. He actually does manage to think about the MC's feelings and concede to the MC's wishes on certain scenarios. He's also the driver of a lot of the revenge schemes, but he always does it with the MC's consent.

The epilogue and side stories are also very enjoyable and they left me hungry for more. All in all, a very sweet, realistic romance story that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. <<less

There is a lot of interpersonal history going on in this novel. What draws me in is that it is realistic given the setting and it is very believable.I always get tired of all those perfect characters... ML was intrigued by MC from the beginning in both lives. He did have a history with other people, even had a son at one point but when he began to court MC, he never derailed. He has a son but we never see him interacting with women so who knows how that came about... but the kid loves MC. All in all, this is a mature character (both MC and ML) When MC and ML first sleep together, its because he accepts a patron/sponsor relationship and he is practical with all it entails.

[collapse]

These are adult characters not new adults who are still googly eyed about the world. I like how it deals with situations like those in the novel realistically. If you are looking for instalove, this is not for you; but if you want to read about a love built brick by brick... come right in. <<less

3.5/5 stars for me

pretty decent. Not anything superb and new, but still enjoyable. I actually really like MC and his personality. It's pretty mature and he's always rational and never gives those who did him wrong a chance to misunderstand him. MC's first life was extremely shitty and I felt so much heartache for him, especially his last moments where everything comes crashing down on him. I love the addition of ML's son and the dynamic between the three is harmonious.

what makes me rate this lower (unless it's so bad... more>> I usually never go lower than a 3/5) is the sharp and abrupt time skip as well as how towards the end, everything gets turned into exposition and we're TOLD about everything happening rather than actually taking us through the events and having the story actually fleshed out. I just feel like the author was speeding and wanted to end it as soon as possible. It really just takes you out of the novel and feels so rushed that you lose a bit of emotional investment in the story. It doesn't help that the author literally rushed through and did a "retelling" of certain super important events that happened (when the ML finally finds out MC has a terminal illness, when ML literally is on the brink of death in which we are cruelly and JARRINGLY given a timeskip) although I do have to say the author does have a tendency to "tell" instead of "show".

and the other one is something I personally always nitpick about: When does ML and MC actually "fall in love" and where does the dynamic change? In this case it's more about the ML, because ML in the beginning really only saw MC as a plaything who is a bit interesting for his straightforward and self-respecting attitude, but then we go from that, straight to 'like' and it felt like we never really had anything substantial to contribute to that specifically. I don't know, from my understanding, I just never really got that magic "oh" moment.

anyways, other than that, it's still pretty good read. I'd still recommend it! <<less

Spoiler

We learn in the first chapter that the main lead sexually assaulted the main character while he was drunk. This is pretty much shrugged off by the author because he "didn't go all the way". In the main character's first life, the main lead goes on to pester the main character to have s*x with him for money for years afterward using his position as his boss. Thankfully, the rest of their relationship is fully, enthusiastically, soberly consensual.

Side characters experience violent r*pe, forced prostitution, and domestic abuse.

The forced prostitution is treated very lightly and like an industry standard for actors, which is unfortunately typical of entertainment circle danmei.

[collapse]

This novel is only 61 chapters long and, to be frank, bites off more than it can chew. There are 2 main villains, a child, various business ventures, a succession fight, numerous side characters, a 3 year time skip, and of course the various acting jobs of the MC. Needless to say, none of it ends up being fully developed and often ends up being resolved via post hoc summarization.

The MC's acting jobs get a brief rundown of their plot and the acting process itself is described with little more detail than "they started filming, it took several months, then filming ended". If you read entertainment circle novels for their detailed engagement with the actor's roles, this novel will disappoint.

There are some basic mistakes - the author seemed to drop the ball and forgot to include a couple scenes; names change without rhyme or reason; scene-to-scene transitions are often abrupt to the point of causing confusion; the pacing is extremely uneven and some events are fast-forwarded while others are excruciatingly slow.

Spoiler

The time skip is particularly egregious. We learn the main lead has suffered an accident. We don't know how serious it is, it's tremendously exciting. Next chapter: three years later. The main lead immediately says that fortunately, he has finally recovered from being crippled by that accident. This is one of the more comically baffling choices the author makes. Like, what was the point of this serious accident even happening? It was resolved immediately. Lmao.

[collapse]

I don't mind a novel messing up some things if it can do other things well, but this novel is juggling so much that nothing has room to breathe.

If I had to say what I liked, the kid is cute, the romance is fluffy and not toxic at all - everything is consensual and they communicate their desires and concerns well. I also actually really liked the plot with the 1st villain, Su Quan:

Spoiler

Qiu Qian (the ML) is a romantic interest for Su Quan, but he's also his only way of climbing out of forced prostitution under an elderly wheelchair-bound man who wants to ruin his career to better control him. Unlike most "competitors" in romance stories, Su Quan has a legitimate reason to vie for the ML's affection at any cost and even - MAJOR SPOILER - attempt to mu*der the MC.

Of course, the ML then abandons Su Quan to his miserable fate as revenge. I see in the comments that for some people, this is too vicious. Maybe the ML should have, at great personal cost, saved the person who betrayed him. After all, forced prostitution is very cruel. I won't argue with that.

I'll only comment that everyone's motivations in this arc made sense and it felt nuanced and morally grey. As a story, I enjoyed it.

[collapse]

In contrast, the 2nd villain Kang Jian felt very flat and only become more of a disposable, brainless cannon fodder as the story went on. His resolution dragged way too long, especially in a story that rushes so many other, more interesting elements.

Bai Lang (the MC) 's family is also ridiculously one-dimensional and shrewish. The author has a bad habit of over-utilizing "!!" and "!?" and "!!?". Bai Lang's mother finishes ALL of her sentences with one of these three. I'm not joking, lol.

I debated with myself for a long time whether to rate a 2 or 3 because I do feel like this story is slightly below average. However, just like the highs aren't high enough to go above 3, the lows aren't really low enough to go below. Like I said: very, very average. 3/5. <<less
