Year 2035. The virtual reality game, Warlord, changed the world. An Jaehyun was one of the many who wished to change his life through the game. After dedicating his life to the game, he was met with a betrayal. A betrayal by his comrades. As a result, he lost everything. But a chance was given to him. A chance to redo everything again! “I won’t play with others ever again. Whatever the outcome, I’ll show that I can do it alone.” Others rolled a dice to split the spoils of victory. An Jaehyun ate it all by himself. It was the start of An Jaehyun’s solo game life.

Having read Emperor of Solo Play from beginning to end, I think three stars is fair.

There are a number of things that stand out to me about the story that drag it down from what could have been four stars.
    1. The ending: Having just finished the story, the ending is still fresh in my mind. I won't spoil anything but suffice it to say, I'm extremely disappointed.

I don't know why the author ended Emperor of Solo Play in the manner he did but it had a massive impact on my enjoyment of the story.
    1. The climax: You could probably lump this in with #1 but I'll count it separately. The story's resolution was one of the things I personally was looking forward to reading.

With a proper... more>> climax to ratchet up the story's tension, the author could have further fuelled that interest.

I probably don't even need to say (though I will) that the author missed this chance.

Emperor of Solo Play might as well not have a climax.
    1. The setting: The story takes place almost entirely inside Warlord, a Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game or VRMMORPG. This isn't really a problem but it isn't exactly an advantage either.

The author doesn't expend much effort on worldbuilding and focuses more on the plot as well as the cast of characters.

The result is a bland, generic fantasy setting oftentimes, which doesn't really standout.

Add on the shady, Pay to Win (P2W) aspects of Warlord and the reader ends up spending a fair amount of time in a world that just isn't particularly fun.
Overall I only gave the story three stars because it held my attention long enough for me to finish the story.

I've read better litrpg genre books be they translated or written in english.

My recommendation to anyone wondering if they should read this is to read the first 10-20 chapters.

If those don't hook you, drop Emperor of Solo Play without hesitation because this isn't a story that improves with time. <<less

It's a pretty solid read. The main character is fun to read and is fairly complex, he doesn't have a problem with playing with others, he just doesn't feel like he can trust anyone anymore. Essentially it's LMS, but the game and overall world itself makes much more sense, the corporations which made the game and the VR system are just normal corporations instead of "all seeing monoliths" and the game is more game-like instead of being almost reality-like, like in LMS. Unlike LMS the main character isn't a total... more>> piece of shit. People have said how the game is bad because all the players do is kill, get skills, and level-up. When was the last time you played an RPG and that WASN'T what you did? Also the real world in the game isn't totally believable, but I'd say large prices for things could be attributed to inflation. <<less

So far, one of the best VRMMO novels I've read. It has some great action that will totally make you asking for more (I did ask otter for more though) ! It stays true (somewhat) to its theme of trying to reach the top by just being solo (I said somewhat since he ask other people for help although he still solo the boss). Overall its a great novel, the only non-romance novel I have ever liked. You can feel his pain in his struggles, his joy in victory and... more>> frustration for every obstacles he encounters. Unfortunately, it only has 190 or so chaps, so kinda too short for me. <<less
