The Husky and His White Cat Shizun

Description

Mo Ran thought becoming Chu Wanning’s disciple was a mistake.

His shizun was really too much like a cat while he himself was a dumb pup who’d only slobber and wag his tail.

Dogs and cats were different by nature; originally, the dumb pup didn’t want to reach his furry paws out to that cat.

At first he thought, dogs should be with dogs, like his shixiong, beautiful and tame like a cute Japanese Spitz, and the two of them together would surely be a match made in heaven.

Yet, after having died and reborn, after having lived two lives, the one he hauled back each time to his den in the end was always the one he couldn’t stand at first: that snow-white kitty shizun.

Attracted to this novel from a fanmade MV on youtube

And yes, the story lived up to my expectations to make me cry my eyes out. Not once. But many, many times.

Don't let the title deceive you. There is barely anything about husky, except some comparisons of ML to a husky, which was never cute enough to save me from the knives.

10/10 for plot - basically the couple's relationship

Spoiler

The story is very dark and includes a lot of depressing and twisted elements. I'm not going any deeper into this. Just beware that there are suicidal thoughts and r*pe. However, the writing is so good that will keep you reading and invested in the story.

[collapse]

10/10 for relationship dynamics - I feel like this is very important to address because I see most people hate ML so much going into the story and end up dropping the story. But don't worry, he'll grow.

Spoiler

There are knives for my Chu Wanning, but there are also knives for ML. So wait for it. You will cry your heart out for both Chu Wanning and ML

10/10 for a treasurable side character aka Xue Meng <<less

Basically, it's an interesting read about evil, justice, soul-searching and redemption but I wish it was written with less yaoi elements and with more sobriety.

There was way too much melodrama for me, with too many contrived plots and plot twists, long-winded emo trips and too much exaggeration about every little bit of angst and bd*m fetishes. The novel is filled with angsty tropes like misunderstandings, indecisive characters, love triangle, torture, misery, r*pe. I don't mind angsty themes but I do mind the exaggeration of those themes. The protags continuously wallows... more>> in self-pity and self-analysis. It's like reading about 2 emo self-absorbed teens rather than 2 genius immortal cultivators lol. Even the side characters are full of drama and misery! And 99% of the book is like that! It's like the author made a list of all possible evils that has ever existed in this world and joyously dump it all into this one novel... I am not joking! The author loves to wax lyrical about the pain and suffering and it starts to feel exaggerated and boring after x times reading about all the r*pe and torture.

As for the plot, I would have preferred if it was just a story about an evil protag redeeming himself and a pure wood spirit's difficult path to finding himself. Those themes were already complex enough but author had to add time travel element and half a dozen evil masterminds outdoing each other in terms of mass killing and scheming and using that space-time crack like some kinda revolving door. So many ppl trying to cheat death, so many ppl committing su*cide left and right, so many ppl crossing over space-time like it was the easiest thing to do... just because? I feel like author's answer to many plots in this novel is 'that magic pill' or 'that magic technique' without any background story and yet author dedicates entire chapters just for tasteless r*pe instances!

This story is like reading how the villain meticulously planned the destruction of the world for 2 lifetimes without a single mistake, by manipulating and controlling in the shadows. All this is a tad difficult to believe, especially with so many omnipotent cultivators around. Yes, our protag is a dumb useless spellbound reborn fool but what about the other genius cultivators... probably too busy wallowing in their own melodramas as well... tsk tsk... <<less

Have potential. Great concept. looks so beautiful.

such a sad twist that the writing throw me off. (how many time I pick it up and try to read again. like you bought an expensive cake your friends recommend. find out you hate it but keep it in the fridge. take a little bite hope you'll like it someday)

Dont get me wrong I enjoy many part of this work. I like the plot to some level. the characters are loveable and interesting. (tho I find the maid lead characters too childish... more>> and too cartoonish for their age. then I feel like yeah that's the whole point they suppose childish lol)

AT FIRST I did not notice it. I did enjoy the 90ish chapters but the more I read the more I feel this way.

It give off this vibe of a kid try to talk like and old man. talk longer than necessary. keep repeating they might believe you. it get lost in its own head a lot

--- the Major turn off is the "repetitive". dragging and circling. Some plot turn out successful. some turn out flat.

for example.

  • some good sh*t happen he made up his mind that Wanning is not that bad really. the next next next chapter good sh*t happen he made up his mind that Wanning is not that bad REALLY. for like.... almost 100 chapters oh boy did it have to that long?
  • Moran keep saying he was the king to hell and back for a whole paragraph just to make one simple point. Wanning keep saying how unlovable he is just to make one simple point. Moran stating the obvious about some past characters over and over again.
  • Over metaphor. describing 1 thing 3 ways. the writer have good idea but the over metaphor, over analyze and over describing turn me off many time. it was personal taste I think. when I was younger I use to like this level of extra too. I thought it was rich and pretty. Now older, I find that the right words are worth more.
the writer have beautiful words and cool ref here and there BUT overall it shaky. the more you talk the more uncertain you look. The more you screaming this rose is red and it sound like you don't even believe it yourself.

many chapters give me Nothing. no punchline no motivations. some even there just to repeat the previous chapters point.

I read the translation in both Thai (published) and in Eng. I still feel the same.

Anyway this novel (loveable characters and concept) are holding the plot okay but far from pretty. a lot of scars. I would say it give off very mature epic feels by the way it's written. with beautiful words and metaphors but truly feel more like a Manga.

so I keep that in mind and reset my brain. going in again and reading it like how I would read a Manga and it just f*cking click.

with less expectation and find it entertaining.

But Not Life changing level they're selling me for in advertis**ent.

unlike many people I don't cry my eyes out. cause when I got a little bit emotional the Extraness turn me off. the umbrella scene tho. almost got me but then... it keep on going tooo much.

BUTTTTTT I enjoy it tho. Go read it for yourself

many LOVE this work. You might

PS. hope they'll do better at script in Drama versions.

because All the elements was there. And Leo Lou is perfect PERFECT.

PS. I had edit this review many many many time. I'm sorry. like I said it's the expensive cake I bought and couldn't throw out. I really like the idea <<less

I came on this novel when I was done watching the Untamed and already finished all MXTX novels. When I learn it was about Shizun-disciple relationship just like SVSSS... I was ecstatic for I have a soft spot for mxtx's first novel. It was painful so I wanted to find something similar. I saw the book cover and the title of this book and made a double-take. I told myself: wait... is this the one I signed up for? It took me a few weeks before I jump in and... more>> start it.

Oh boy... I gladly smacked my head with my prejudice. Don't judge the book by its cover saying never gets old.

There is something about Meatbun's storytelling that pulls you in from the very first chapter. And because of that, I ended up binge-read the entire novel that has more words than the entire Harry Potter franchise in just 3 days. I was a fast reader but with this book, I made a new personal record.

When I read plenty of reviews stating this is the book that will wreck you but also patch you for thousand times before you finally got a semblance of a happy ending... I still have doubts. I've seen it so many times. I have survived western tragedy books such as Me Before You, The Fault in Our Stars, and Nicholas Sparks books... not to mention I'm a pro reader of MXTX and a lot more painful danmei novels. So I thought my mentality was already equipt for Erha... but I guess the author is proving me wrong all along.

Meatbun has perfectly made this novel into a gray battleground. The selfishness, evilness, and desperations of people vs. sacrificial love, heroism, and long-standing devotion in another part. Many novels have already featured this stuffs... but with Erha... those different but compelling emotions were weaved so intricately and so flesh out that it was really hitting close to home. The characters' desires, motivations, passion, and sacrifices are something that is a struggle of each person in real life.

Who are we to judge? Who are we to condemn? Who are we to punish?

If we slip in their shoes, will we be any better? Will we be any different?

It was easy to be like the people in Tianyin Pavilion. It was easy to build prejudice about someone base on what we think is correct. It is easy to hate someone you misunderstand. It was easy to condemn someone for the sins so blatantly done in front of you without asking for the reason why it was done.

We, humans, are like that. We are just like those people in Erha who easily hated Mo Ran at the very beginning of the novel on the way he speaks and on the way he acts. We judged his past. We judged his decisions. We condemn him as evil and twisted. We don't like him at the beginning for whatever reason we see in the first chapters.

But what did we feel when everything comes to light? When did we learn the truth? When we are slap with one revelation into another? Some of us still hated the Mo Ran of the past. Some repented and understand the entire thing, some just felt like it was an overly inputted pain and the knives are unnecessary.

That's what makes me love Erha and the author. She brings out the real nature of humankind in her readers. People can't be categorized as just good or just evil.

Misunderstanding happens. It is easy to say that if the characters would have just talked it out... nothing painful would have happened. But if you as a person would do that... we can't expect another one to take a similar choice. One person has a different personality from another. One can be outspoken... another one is not.

And when everyone is branding your feelings (Shizun-disciple love/homosexual) in a world in which saving faces is a must and reputation matters above else... would it also be an easy love journey for Mo Ran and Wanning even without some of the painful arcs? If in this modern world there were still obstacles for love that was deemed not normal... what's more in this Xianxia novel in which every single characters can be treated as a hero in their own little world?

This novel is flawed so do the characters, but isn't everything in this world is? Let us all be the jury... but on a second thought... do we have the right to? <<less

I just created an account, especially for this book. I'm on this site since forever, but this is the first novel that made me write a review. Because it absolutely deserves tenfolds of praises and love.

How do you start reviewing an imperfectly perfect book? That's my struggle. I always love classics and mostly western novels. But never in my life, I would imagine the book that will turns out to be the top novel of all time on my list will be a Chinese web novel, one that I have... more>> finished with clean-up MTL.

After reading MDZS, I thought I know how painful the sacrifice word is. But I was wrong... extremely wrong. Erha had taken love, hatred, fate, passion, pain, and misunderstanding to a god-tier level. Every knife the author throws really digs deep. Yet I gladly accept every stab, not because I enjoy the pain but because it makes the book more realistic and relatable.

Things that I love:

1.) 85% of novels I've read, I always could guess what's going to happen at the ending. But Erha never ceases to amaze me. When you thought the revelations in one chapter could knock out the living daylights out of you... trust me, Meatbun knows her game and will surely top it up in the next one until your jaw drops on the floor.

2.) How I love an unreliable narrator. It makes the twist and turns more satisfying knowing that you as a reader were almost on the same footing as with the MC. Both of you don't know anything at all. It felt like the readers and the MC are together in the journey of understanding what the heck is going on.

3.) The flashbacks. I'm not a fan of extremely long, one-drop flashbacks. Erha does its flashbacks in a very realistic kind of way. In real life, there is always a time when we just space out and think of things we have done before, then we instantly pull back to the present. That's how Meatbun gives the reader the snippet of what happened in the past. It gives of very relatable vibes and at the same time makes the reader crave and wish for more. And not a single flashback is out of place or felt like dragging. Every single thing ties the plot and answers questions.

4.) The characters. Let save the main CP at the end and this part is just a general view of the people in this novel. Every single character that matters are a hero of their own story. Nothing can be categorized as a fully black and white character. Everyone is flawed and driven by their personal circumstances. They do things because they have reasons. The characters are fleshed out in a way that will make you sympathize with them, cry with them, hurt with them and love them.

Because that what real life is. People have their own perspectives. What's right and okay for you might not be for others. There is no absolute right and wrong. The right and wrong that we are using as guidelines in society are just dictated by norms. Because sometimes, people do things that can be considered as wrong to make a certain situation right. It doesn't mean it is the right thing... it is just right for that person.

A villain in one story can be the hero in another. Nothing is absolute, nothing is what it seems. Only the character playing the role could understand fully why he do what he did.

5.) The xianxia world Meatbun created was simply extraordinary. I've read and watch a lot of similar themes novels and dramas, but this is one of the few that really make me feel like I jump inside that world and truly was amazed. The described storytelling was spot on and paints me the entire picture of what's going on.

6.) Mo Ran. Mo Weiyu. Taxian Jun. Mo-zongshi.

Might be the most complex character I have ever fortunately encountered and the most satisfyingly painful character development I have witnessed. He made me want to slap him for the nth time in the first book, cry with him on the latter part of that said book. Drown in guilt, pain, and longing in the second one. And finally ready to accompany him in Hell in book 3. This character loves to the extreme and hates to the extreme. I won't put any spoiler, but let me just tell you... whatever hatred, frustration, and annoyance you will feel for him on the first book... please... for the love of everything holy... don't drop the book. Trust me, this guy is worthy of Chu Wanning's love.

I know we all have a different perspective, but my friends who have read this novel and I have also seen a lot of comments in which they still hate Moran 0.5 (Taxian Jun) and say he doesn't deserve the ending he got... it pains me to read those. TXJ is Mo Ran and Mo Ran is TXJ. It was TXJ who had to experience a lot of pain and sacrifice for the present Mo Ran to learn how to be Mo-zongshi. There are a lot of things Mo Ran of the present was spared of that TXJ had to suffer. He turned into what he is not because he has a choice on the matter... it was because he was forced by circumstance and to protect what he loved the most. Both Mo-zongshi and Taxian Jun deserve the ending they get and I will take it no other way.

7.) Chu Wanning. Wanning. Shizun. Beidou Immortal. Elder Yuheng. Chu Fei.

The best ML out there. This guy was indeed as pure a lotus inside yet cold and inexpressive outside. It sounds like a typical tsundere lead, but trust me this one is as multi-faceted as far as character goes. He was like an onion that has so many layers and as you peel them the more you understand... but let me warn you... the more you also cry like a mess. This one can take home the sacrifice crown and no one will complain. He was not the Mary Sue/Gary Stu kind of ML and was as flawed as Mo Ran and the other characters. Which I absolutely loved.

8.) RanWan's love. Some say it was toxic without really understanding what these two characters had gone through and what they had given up and sacrificed for their love. Both of them had literally gone to Hell and get back to fight for that love. Two lifetimes, two-cycle of deaths and endless entanglements and misunderstandings, years of waiting, pinning, and regrets. Yet one thing is constant in those lifetimes. Mo Ran will always love Chu Wanning and vice versa. It was hard to explain and summarize their extremely complex love story.

The question of what if the one you have sacrificed your soul for ends up to be the person you would hurt the most because of that sacrifice? How ironic... how tragic. I actually expected this novel to end in a tragedy, because when you read few chapters before the ending... it felt like there is no way out. Yet Meatbun really plays with the reader's heart and I loved her for giving the perfect ending Erha could ever get.

9.) The novel contains almost all the explicit warnings a novel can have. It was not for the faint heart. And even me, a tough reader bleed like no other. I just love how everything negative shown in this book was never patronize nor encourage. Every mistake of the character, every evil thing the characters chose to do might make the reader understand and sympathize with them but the author never presented it as something okay. It was presented to give a lesson not only to the characters themselves but also to the readers. There are evils in the world. We couldn't escape nor eradicate them completely, we just have to learn how to live with it but at the same time not condone it. Those who label these books as problematic and toxic don't completely grasp why the author has presented the bad things. People commit mistakes, do unforgivable things and hurt people who love them. It doesn't make them right, however, just like in the real-life, Erha presented it in a way that you will understand why they reach the point of committing those things.

10.) And lastly, twist and turns and the unpredictable rollercoaster of emotion it has given me. Erha reigns as the top romance novel on my list for an unforeseeable future and what I fear is that it might take me a long time to find something that will dethrone it.

Things I don't like:

1.) Book 2 is my least favorite of all the 3. Don't get me wrong, book 2 contains some of the sweetest and heartwarming parts of the novel, but they're a few parts that I feel a bit of drag. But almost every single part of it paves the way to book 3.

2.) It already ended. The ending is the best it could be but my reader's heart shed tears again when I realize there is no more Erha for my slightly masochistic heart.

This book will stick with me for a very long time. No exaggeration, but Erha changed my view on what a top-tier novel is. It raises my already very high bar on the quality side to a level that was so hard to find an equal.

To those who are just planning to read, listen to me and store a bunch of tissue rolls. You will need it. And one more thing, re-reading doesn't lessen the pain and heartache. You will end up crying more than the first read for you already know what will happen next. <<less

Good story but there are so many plot holes (what I mean by plot holes is that they aren’t necessarily a hole since there is an explanation by the author, but the explanation falls short).

Plus very unnecessary r*pe scenes. There would be a very critical moment and then suddently it would cut to a s*x (rape) scene. Like how do they got time for that when the world is ending?????

I find it hard to sympathize with taxian jun even after finding out about the hate flower because he continued to r*pe Chu Wanning even in Wanning’s second life. <<less

Ah... I have complicated feelings about this novel. Did I cry buckets over it and become overly emotionally invested in the characters (especially Chu Wanning) ? Yes. Do I despise the ending and find certain elements of this series quite distasteful? Also yes.

I truly wanted to give this novel 5 stars but I really can't.

I really liked the premise and most of the novel. It had so much potential for positive character development and it really did fulfill that. Seeing Mo Ran change and grow was so satisfying and the... more>> slow burn of his relationship with Chu Wanning was beautiful. The side characters were actually interesting to read about and their own arcs were great. And the angst... Meatbun really is amazing when it comes to writing angst.

Alright, onto my rant about the ending, which ruined the rest of the novel for me:

    • Constant use of deus ex machina/random plot twists
      Spoiler

Mo Ran being a butterfly boned beauty, somehow being revived at the end, his father, the flower, etc

      [collapse]
    • Some predictable plot points
      Spoiler

ex. Shi Mei turning out to be the antagonist.. who would have thought

      [collapse]
    • The r*pe. I knew there was going to be s*xual assault in this novel, but I truly disliked the way it was presented.
      Spoiler

I know Mo Ran repents his actions, but it felt so surface level. Also, Chu Wanning simply easily forgives him for it. Sure, it was supposed to be some kind of beautiful gesture of unconditional love but it felt weird. The fact that Chu Wanning also blames himself for everything? It doesn't sit right with me, especially with how brutal, ruthless, and humiliating the assault was.

      [collapse]
I would've loved for the author to explore the stages of processing such trauma that comes from it instead of romanticizing it (which she definitely does, along with a large part of the fandom). I personally find it distasteful and I felt uncomfortable with it. And yes, I did read the warnings and I was ready to read about the r*pe, but I find the fetishization of it disgusting.
    • Taxian-jun. I hated him initially (and still dislike him) and I enjoyed seeing Mo Ran growing out of this character.
      Spoiler

I dislike that he somehow came back and fused with the other parts of Mo Ran's soul. Yes, I know he was under the influence of the flower, and yes, I know that he is technically Mo Ran. But he is a past self who Mo Ran truly grew out of. I've seen people explain that he's basically Mo Ran's trauma personified and represents Mo Ran coming to terms with his actions. But did Mo Ran 2.0 not retain all his memories as Taxian-jun and acknowledge his actions and trauma? He did! After 10 years, Taxian-jun is more of a caricature of Mo Ran's former self. They're clearly not the same person. If you went back in time and saw yourself from 10 years ago, are they not a completely different person? Not to mention, they had experienced completely different things in those 10 years! That quick memory exchange was such a weak plot point. Why was Mo Ran was the one who was punished for his actions as Taxian-jun, not Taxian-jun himself? Taxian-jun fusing with Mo Ran and having some kind of quirky split personality in the end- it was uncomfortable. His overly arrogant and forceful personality was also very unlikeable. His presence in the ending felt more like fanservice that catered towards the fans who enjoyed the r*pe scenes.

      [collapse]
Well those are my thoughts. This is probably an unpopular opinion since so many people love this novel and its ending, but I'll share my thoughts anyways. Overall, please be aware of the warnings and if you feel uncomfortable with the romanticization of r*pe (subtly in the novel itself and quite apparent in the fandom), it's probably best to avoid reading.

I loved the premise of the novel, the characters, the character development, but the ending really just ruins it all for me. <<less

Five words.

Heart wrenching and Devastatingly beautiful.

I just finished reading the last chapter of this novel and I am literally speechless because I feel like I just survived an apocalypse.

While writing, I feel like this is what the author thought, "Is it too sweet right now, let's make it sad..... there you go.... Not sad enough. Let's make it sadder.... good.... now let's give the poor readers some oxygen to breath.... they got enough oxygen now so let's just pierce their lungs with 47563927 thorns.... okay not enough, let's squish their... more>> heart until their 375 ancestors feel the pain.... good enough, let's give them some break now..... but I'm still not satisfied, why not just-"

You get the point, don't you? I am not exaggerating in any way. The first half of the book was filled with a little angst, and mostly a LOT of justified and really well-written character development. It was filled with some humor, some pain and was mostly shifting from the past to present at a pace that was beautiful. I found the first half of the book to be very random with slightly confusing events. But Mo Ran was one of the deepest characters I've ever read and his thoughts and feelings, his actions, everything will touch your heart and make you feel things. All the main and side characters of this book are just so well written, I am shocked at how it all fit in just 311 chapters.

The second half of the book is when everything falls into place. The random events I spoke about that takes place in the first half of the book start having deeper meanings and is followed by a TON of plot twists. I am being very honest when I say this is the most angst I have ever read (and I have read a LOT so far). I often found myself taking breathers between chapters because of how breathless and exhausted this book got me.

Over all, I LOVE the book so much, I'll probably dream about it for the next six months and find every book I read from now on bland.

This is entirely my point of view and it doesn't mean others might share the same opinion. I might have even been a little overdramatic in the review but these are probably just the after effects of reading 2HA. <<less

*maybe minor spoiler about character personalities*

I loved this novel so much. As everyone has said already, 2ha is an emotional roller coaster. I definitely cried a few times. There are many plot twists, and it has a LOT of dark themes (r/pe, violence, gore, etc). So yes, 2ha is NOT for everyone, but imo all the dark themes served the plot and character developments. I also enjoyed the minor characters a lot (esp Ye Wangxi, poor bb) and even some of the funny bits (like the inedible tofu part and... more>> weapon naming bits lol). Yes as the MC, Mo Ran was pretty unlikeable for the first portion of the story, many times you just want to slap his train of thoughts and strangle him. But honestly it was really intriguing to read how 1.0 Mo Ran tries to rein himself from committing more terrible things that he had done in the past and run from his guilty conscience while fearing and understanding that the sins will catch up to him one day. That's such a relatable human psyche. On that note, I love love Chu Wanning's character for same reason. As someone who is around the same age as him, I found all the reasons on why he's cold and distant, not knowing how to tear down the wall between himself and others, to be very relatable and really tucked my heartstrings. Plus, it's also refreshing to find a 受 who is powerful, has that cold "domineering" elegance, and older in age. (Instead of the typical gentle innocent trope, or hotheaded trope) I do not find their developing relationship toxic. I mean, yes, toxic circumstances, but Mo Ran and CWN tried to be better versions of themselves. There are so many layers of them putting the other first before himself, while fighting their own flaws, incapability, guilty conscience, etc. I enjoyed reading all the angst. These are very scarred characters who go through physical and emotional hardships to finally be able to be together. All the dark twists just made their happy ending even the more satisfying.

I find it honestly mind-boggling that people pass 'pc' judgement purely on the violent s*x scenes and call this a "r/pe fantasy" story when 1) we're talking about a tyrannical character who committed mass mu*der (but hey no one calls this a mu*der fantasy story) , and 2) in the novel those scenes were always described as "unforgivable" and "cruel" things done to Chu Wanning. It's clear they're meant to show the extent of how far off the edge Mo Ran / TCJ has become. If anything, it's a portrayal of what already exists in the worst of human nature. It's like some completely missed the point of CWN "forgiving" Mo Ran. CWN didn't fall in love as a result of getting assaulted, he never liked the way he was treated. But he had always cared about Mo Ran before any of this. CWN feels self-deprecated and, as his Shizun, completely responsible for what Mo Ran became and he's unwilling to give up on trying to turn his disciple around, even at the expense of being humiliated in the worst ways possible. There's also nothing wrong for the author to write in details. S*x scene is a s*x scene. The language will be explicit, vulgar because it's NC. I absolutely understand it's very triggering, but I just hope people understand that the point of the story is NOT trying to excuse the crime or whatever, it's way more than that.

In the 1.0 timeline, yes CWN fell in love with his disciple, but it's in a very pure way and he never stepped out of boundaries and never had so-called 'impure' thoughts. (He's inexperienced in that type of intimacy anyways) All he wanted to do was to care and try loving. Age gap is insignificant in xianxia/wuxia genres when it's so common immortals and hundred year-old "youth" characters exist. Here's the thing, romantic relationship between two different classes, different sects, immortal/mortal, anything else that society frowns upon, or even love across time, are such common themes in those genres. The dynamic of master/disciple should not even come as a surprise.

If I have to give a minus point, I would probably say some of the side plots do get dragged on a little bit too much. And that the "boss" reveal may be a tad bit underwhelming depending on whether you picked up the hints or not. Lol

But all in all, I highly recommend the novel for anyone who acknowledge all the trigger warnings and still willing give it a try. A whole 300+ chapters story, a very plentiful read. Also, apparently there will be a drama adaptation of this novel, and although it'll be highly censored, hope people will at least understand the main themes and messages of the story. <<less

*haven't read the extras, just the main story in the Suika/Rynn translation and second half in edited MTL*

Tempted to give this a lower rating just to even out the score, because this novel is hyped to an extent where some readers will inevitably be disappointed. This book is treated like the second coming of Christ among danmei readers, and seriously, it's overhyped. It's not a masterpiece and it has many, many flaws.

So a fair rating might be 3.5 starts.

However, it's hard to judge when only half the novel... more>> has a decent translation at the moment. Hopefully a full translation (which seems to be on the way) will do it more justice.

Will try to give an honest, hype-free and fair review. I think 2Ha is worth reading, but it should be judged for both the good and the bad parts.

Good parts:

    • The prose is fantastic. As simple as that. I'm not necessarily a 100% fan of Meatbun's style, since a lot of it is tell, don't show, which is something I really dislike. But still she's a phenomenal writer and some parts are absolutely beautifully written. Worth reading the book just for those scenes.
    • The premise is intriguing, and while it didn't develop quite how I would have expected or even hoped for, it was still a wild ride in terms of plot and I like that Meatbun isn't afraid to try and tackle dark subject matter.
    • The MC - morally grey characters are my jam. I don't love Mo Ran, and I found his s*upidity hard do endure sometimes. But he was an engaging character all the way and his moral struggles where well-developed.
    • The ML - he grew on me, and it's nice to experience a shou who's extremely powerful and masculine, yet still soft-hearted.
    • World-building. Fairly good even if it was a bit confusing whenever the story pulled a new type of magical species out whenever it was convenient for the plot.
    • Themes - redemption, good vs evil, the inherent evil in humanity - and loads more that I can't remember, because this novel is soo long.
    • Villain. Not too surprising, but the villain's motivation was understandable and made me feel sympathy for him, while at the same time leaving me quite horrified. Which is a good combination in my book.
    • Tight plot - it got confusing at times to keep track of all the different plot threads, but everything was planned and I didn't discover any major plot holes. Even the ending was alluded to (kind of) in earlier chapters. The novel has an intricate plot and Meatbun deserves praise for having planned this monster of a novel fairly well.
    • Romance - not entirely my cup of tea (not because of dubcon and noncon, more because it was a bit too over the top for me at times), but overall I found it believable and was able to root for the CP without being super invested in them individually.
    • Epic fantasy/xianxia story.
Bad parts:

    • The romance drags. Like, really drags. I rolled my eyes quite a few times a certain scenes, and the author really tested my patience here. Slow burn is fine, but for a 300+ chapters romance novel, where only the MC and ML are fully fleshed out until the second part of the story, RanWan sure took their sweet time.
    • Plot is kind of all over the place, and there are soo many tropes and cliches. Some worked well enough, some just felt unnecessary.
    • Tell instead of show. All. The. Freaking. Time. Meatbun is constantly repeating herself and outright spoonfeeding the reader with emotional stuff and plot. Not my taste in writing.
    • Angst for the sake of angst. Look, I'm fine with angst. I love sad stories that rip my heart out because of how much I care for the characters. Some readers feel this way about 2Ha, but I couldn't really. The angst is highly exaggerated, to the point where I could feel whenever Meatbun had written something with the sole intention of making the reader very emotional. Made me feel slightly manipulated. Certain tropes got overused to the extent that it was annoying, because it didn't contribute to the story.
    • Side characters: Some did eventually become properly fleshed out, but for the entire first half of this super long novel, the side characters are 2 dimensional and either bland or annoying. I had no feeling for them. It got better, but an author who truly masters her art would be able to craft believable side characters in less than 1000 pages.
    • Too many side plots. This novel is screaming for a good editor. Some scenes and storylines need to be cut, because as it is, 2Ha is a messy overload with too many side stories written just for plot or emotional effect.
    • Mo Ran and CWN are too s*upid sometimes, to the point were it didn't feel totally believable to me. Yes, I know the author meant for MR to be s*upid, but seriously
Spoiler

How can a guy who's supposedly smart enough to go from a bumpy teenager to a powerful, evil tyrant who rules the entire world in just a handful of years, and who is over 30 at the beginning of the story be so oblivious to his own feelings even when he's literally told that CWN is his fated love?! Fine that it takes him some time to figure it out, but he should have realized it sooner. The fact that the author had to explain why he doesn't realize it at CWN's death is unconvincing. When he finally figures it out it's so banal.

CWN is almost as bad. He acts like a teenager, not a grown man. He should have realized that even if MR wasn't in love with him, he still fancied him (since MR literally crawled into his bed, held him and kissed him). And he keeps saying that he's ugly, which is just s*upid. Literally everyone around him comments on how beautiful he is, but he thinks he's ugly because he doesn't have the same extreme beauty that Shi Mei does. Which just comes off as vain and immature. It's fine that he has low self-esteem and feels lonely, but it's not like he has zero friends. He could have tried a little bit harder, and his constant pitiful monologue about how no one has ever loved him is just s*upid. So you're single in your mid-twenties, that's not exactly the end of the world.

Then there's his love for MR. The fact that for the longest time the readers doesn't get to see why he fell in love with a bumbling teenager made it hard for me to sympathize with his pinning. He's a grown man, he's powerful, and drop-dead gorgeous - why in the world would you think you're not good enough for a dumb little brat? And why do you even like someone as dumb and annoying? I know that anyone can have low self-esteem, but it just unrealistic in the end. The MC confesses to him, something CWN has dreamed of for years, and his answer is that there's no way MR can love him because he's ugly?! I'm sorry, WTF, did you go temporarily deaf and blind all the 100s of times people were calling you beautiful to your face and oggling you? Is this supposed to be a grown-ass person of normal intelligence?

CWN's low self-esteem does eventually get explained, along with why he originally fell for teenage MR, but way too late in the story, and by then I'd already lost too many braincells reading about him being an idiot.

[collapse]

Overall I have mixed feelings about this book. I was hooked for long stretches of time, and found some parts were very moving (even for a cold-hearted, somewhat cynical reader like me). Some parts just made me really annoyed. Still a good, if very flawed novel. Dogblood but with great prose. Will probably read parts of it again when a full translation comes out. <<less

Can't deny that I really did enjoy this novel despite several issues I had with it.

First off, the pros. The premise is great. There were many plot twists, some of which I didn't expect, others I did.

Moreover, the author's writing is great. I read it in the original language, so I do realise that some of the nuances may be lost in translation, but overall it was really pretty. Characters were pretty well fleshed out and multi-dimensional. There really isn't a good way to determine right and wrong in this... more>> novel; sure, some of the characters do carry out actions that are obviously morally wrong, but its also difficult to completely blame them, if you look at their motivation for it

Take for example,

Spoiler

The whole issue with Mo Ran killing Xue Zhengyong's actual nephew and burning down an entire building, causing the deaths of hundreds. Or the issue with Shi Mei and his motivation for opening the gates to the Demon Realm.

[collapse]

I think the author really did well in balancing both evil and good, and it does make you consider your judgments on others behaviour, because things may not be as they seem on the surface. (Of course, understanding and sympathising is one thing, but deserved punishment is another. This shouldn't be mixed up imo)

I liked that I was able to feel for the characters, they felt like real people (except for some) and I did end up crying over their lives lmao

Spoiler

I felt really strongly for Ye Wangxi and Nangong Si... Also Luo Fenghua kills me everytime, there were so many parallels I could draw between him and Chu Wanning, and I was really upset over his end (As much as I love Wanning, I do feel like he did get it easier in some aspects (though he suffered a ton in others which made me so angry)

[collapse]

However, there were many cons that did take away from the entire reading experience.

As many have mentioned, the presence of r*pe. There's a bunch of controversy over this, but personally, as a fictional work, I generally don't pay too much attention to it (I skim over), unless:

  1. The entire work is based on it;
  2. It's too frequent and usually seems very redundant
Unfortunately, The Husky and His White Cat Shizun falls under the latter category. I genuinely felt that

Spoiler

Going into details about Mo Ran 0.5 life with Shizun did not need to be presented in the form of r*pe. I mean, I get that that was the main way Chu Wanning was tortured, but it was so frequent in the latter part of the novel that instead of feeling pain for Chu Wanning (which I did still feel initially), I got a little frustrated because I felt that there were other ways to reflect the torture on Chu Wanning.

[collapse]

Next, while the writing was superb and really fluent, it was really wordy. There were some parts where my eyes just glossed over because of the sheer amount of info dump in one paragraph.

Also, I felt that some plot twists were really convenient, to the point where it felt forced;

Spoiler

e.g Mo Ran being able to come back to life because he's a special kind of Butterfly-Boned Beauty... It wasn't explained how he had this heritage, did it come from his mother?? What?? I was already feeling a little iffy that Mo Ran was one of the NanGong clan's descendant, though I can chalk that to a rather reasonable explanation, but the former didn't really make sense to me, apart from being a plot device to keep him alive.

[collapse]

I also don't really understand Chu Wanning's character sometimes, as much as I loved his character.

Spoiler

He seems unnecessarily saint like...? Like, you can be kind and all, but going to the extent to blame yourself for everything that your disciple did... didn't really make sense to me? Oh yeah, the misunderstandings also drove me mad, because so many things could've be resolved if they would just TALK. When they say this novel is dog-blooded, they really weren't kidding.

[collapse]

Finally, I really dislike Ta-Xianjun's 'character'.

Spoiler

I just feel like it was unnecessary to have him, I mean Mo Ran 2.0 already had his memories from the previous life, so it didn't really seem necessary for me. Ta-xianjun's actions really left a bad taste in my mouth; even if I knew why he was the way he was, I still couldn't bring myself to like him at all, even when the author tried to redeem him. Ironically, I ended up viewing them as 2 separate beings, which was why I felt so frustrated when Ta-xianjun still shared a body with Mo Ran 2.0 after his revival.

[collapse]

Overall, it was still an enjoyable read despite the flaws, though I wasn't particularly satisfied with some aspects of the novel. But the fact that I could still feel quite strongly for some characters, made me rate this higher than I would with all the listed flaws.

Disclaimer: I get that people love this novel, I do enjoy it too, so please don't come for me lol It's only because I quite like it that I'm reviewing it with such... depth? Detail? IDK but yes <<less

This novel is the most dog-blooded novel I have ever read in my life. I'm reasonably sure it was written for the dogblood-loving crowd. Dog-blood isn't really my thing, but I somehow managed to stuck through the entire thing for Mo Ran lol.

In summary:

    • The writing is very skillful and manages to salvage the dogblood plot to something legible.
    • The concept was interesting, but the plot was bad and full of plotholes. So many plotholes, mostly from the poor synchronization between the plot and the characterisation and between the 2 halves of the plot. The characterisation of most characters (except Mo Ran) was badly executed, especially the villains. Most characters acted in very dog-blooded manners, with dogblood decisions, dogblood motives, and dogblood misunderstanding. The villains were irrational and illogical for being a supposedly smart guy. I feel bad for the villains, they were clearly screwed over and cramped into the role by the plot.
    • The romance is badly developed and screwed over by the illogical time frame division of the characters' lives. I swore the author changed the time frame 4 times throughout the series. The illogical time frame makes the plot and the romance less realistic and more dogblood. This novel wants to have the characters age naturally but still have the long waiting time of wuxia/xianxia romance, so the time frame became a mess.
    • In addition to the illogical time frame, Chu Wanning was badly developed and an illogical character, and it was him who dragged the realism of the romance down. In the first half of the novel and in the past life plot, he existed solely as a dogblood-generation device, without an ounce of logic for his eternal suffering choices and his feeling for his 15-yo pupil that he had only known for a few months. Now, I don't have a thing against teacher-student relationship in fiction, but the root of the feeling Chu Wanning had toward Mo Ran is still his physical attraction as a 25-yo-sth adult to his 15-yo pupil that he had only known for a few months. It would have made more sense if the author had reduced the age gap to around 3 years and spent more time in the first half writing about how the 2 felt in love in the first place before things blow up, like she did in the middle of the novel but changed her mind later on again back to the 10-year age gap for the long waiting time of a classical wuxia romance. As it is, with the final decision landing on the 10-year age gap and only a few months of physical attraction, which was described in only a few pages in the latter half of the series, I grew desensitized to Chu Wanning's suffering in the first half and in the past life because his actions and decision to suffer for love made no sense whatsoever. I just felt it was dogblood. Now, Chu Wanning did get his character development later on in the honeymoon period after the waiting time (which is easily the second best written part of this novel), but it was too little, too late. The honeymoon period drew a very beautiful romance, both Chu Wanning's characterisation and their relationship dynamic improved significantly, but the healthy wholesome relationship of the latter half and Chu Wanning himself still feel a lot like the gilded roof of a house built without foundation.
    • The setting is interesting but more time spent on world-building would go a long way, especially when the author seems to be better at world-building than developing romance. This author may be bad at plotting and time frame division, but she has a way with words and world-building. The world feels realistic despite the fantasy elements, and so is the sufferings of the civilian supporting cast in it, second-loop Young Phoenix, and Mo Ran, just, not the suffering of the main cast outside of Mo Ran and second-loop Young Phoenix lol. The major supporting characters are about as well-built as Chu Wanning lol. That said, the ending kinda went against and discarded the realism of the world-building of the first world for the sake of a closed happy ending, so...
    • The character development of Mo Ran is very impressive, and he became the only character that I like in this series. I disliked him at first for being a scum, but he turned me around with his believable and sympathetic redemption story (except for the forced happy ending). I especially love how he wandered around hell and cried over how he had disappointed his mother and himself. The characterization actually did well in this one because Mo Ran clearly stated that even though he was ill and manipulated by a foreign force in his past life, all the evil deeds and scummy decisions he did was all on him, not the foreign force. The foreign force only amplified his antagonism toward everyone else. The antagonism and ill-will were all him, just well-hidden behind a smile before the foreign force started to influence him. What he did as Taxian-jun was identical to what he did before he was adopted, in much the same mentality and with as much brutality, just amplified to a greater scale. After his redemption, the guy did try his best to become a decent human being and had always known that he was a monster inside. His trial is honestly the best part of the series and drives the meaning of the redemption home.
    • However, I was very disappointed with the happy ending. It would have made for a much better ending if the deus ex machine didn't happen and rendered his conviction during his trial meaningless. Literal crime-washing. After finishing the story, I read a fanfic where Chu Wanning gave the foreign force removal part to Taxian-jun, Taxian-jun slowly woke up and stayed in the first loop, then they slowly discovered the truth while rebuilding their relationship from ground -1000, Taxian-jun then went through the redemption process, not just for the crimes he committed against Chu Wanning but also for the crimes he did against all the innocents he had killed, died at the end to save the world, went to hell to apologize to all the innocents he hurt and his mother, and waited for Chu Wanning on the bridge leading to hell. Honestly a better development of the romance, Chu Wanning, plot coherency, and ending.
    • Second-loop Young Phoenix is sympathetic and is one of the rare well-built major characters of this series. His sibling relationship with Mo Ran is wholesome. His character growth is believable and well-written. On the other hand, First-loop Young Phoenix is a cannon folder who died for the happy ending because else there would have to be an actual confrontation between Mo Ran and him lol. Can't force a happy ending if Taxian-jun isn't 100% crime-washed lol. Seriously, wished the original novel had done the same and actually stuck to Mo Ran's conviction and choice at the trial like the fanfic mentioned above did.
    • Voyeuristic description and romanticization of r*pe is sadly too common among the shoujo genre and BL genre, especially with yandere love interests (which are as common as jungle in the danmei scene). And this novel is no different.
Overall, a very dogblood series. I stuck through it for Mo Ran. First half is bad. Second half is good to very good, depending on the scene. Climax is dogblood. Ending is very disappointing. I rate Mo Ran a 5 and everything else a 2, average score 3. Read this novel if you like dogblood.

I didn't like this novel that much. I find the angst too forced and dragging. I was expecting to be gripped by the drama and tragedies because that is my cup of tea. I lived for the hurt and wanted to feel that gut wrenching pain because after all, the reviews promised me all that. But for some reason, when I am halfway through the story, I was already getting tired of the narratives. It wasn't that great. Maybe I was a victim of the hype and got my expectation... more>> set too high? I was so excited to read it and when I did, it didn't deliver. I do not write reviews unless a novel is good, so even though my review will be lost among the other ones, here it is. And my review is short and spoiler-free, so feel free to go ahead.

No book is perfect. No character is truly perfect.

A good story has imperfect characters. A great story has characters who change - change by their thoughts, not by their ideals, by their roots. No black is truly black, no white is truly white, only the grey shall turn into it's extremes.

With it's facetious... more>> title, many might want a light-hearted, something that caters to our thoughts, but the author clearly refutes the claim in one of their notes (these words touched me) :-

“Respecting readers and comments is important, but respecting the characters is the first thing the person typing the novel should do"

Truly, this literary work being barred to many just because of the genre of "Yaoi" hurts my heart, because it is a wonderful one, with no word wasted, and a definite change from perspective to perspective.

The reason why this novel is rated 18+ is not only due to it's graphic and explicit writings, but also due to the fact that many of the areas it touches upon, unless you have the heart to withstand, to understand, to meld your perspective, it's quite impossible and might want to put it away, and it's truly fine to do so.

Be it 30 chapters, be it 60, or be it 90, everything was done well.

And also, once again, do not be fooled by the title, and I hope my rather uninteresting review can make you read this interesting work of literature. <<less

I'm officially exhausted

I've prepared myself for the knives before I started reading but, I never expected that the knives would be this painful.

Honestly, this novel is a gem. You might find the MC annoying at first, but you will gradually like him.

... more>> I love all the characters. They are all written so well, every characters have their own story, and have their own reason for doing things

You might hate a character at one point bcs of their evil ways of doing things but, after knowing their backstory, you will instead have mixed feelings about them.

And the main couple... *Sigh* they are actually soooo cute. Their interactions are very heartwarming.

Spoiler

well, except the flashbacks with taxian jun in it. Especially with the noncon. Its painful to read man

[collapse]

Their slowburn romance will make you feel this urge to just shake their heads so that they can realize that they fkin love each other. But when they're finally together, you will feel this satisfaction.

And the knives, folks. It's PAINFUL. The knives are hidden at every corner and will stab you unknowingly.

Just, be prepared if you want to read this.

About the plot, it's—Iactually have no words.

It's just like riding a roller coaster. One time, the plot is slow, filled with random events and all. And then the the plot are slowly building up, you will slowly be fed with clues about the true mastermind, and then the big drop of roller coaster arrived. You will then be slapped repeatedly by all the revelations, the plot twists the slowly revealed mastermind, and also all the knives. All of that came rushing to you in a swoop.

All of the clues that have been scattered all over by the author will come together and then lead to the revelation of the true mastermind. You will realize at the end that the author has given you these small clues along the way. At the end you will just be mindblown

Spoiler

like when the mastermind was revealed, and also about the hate flower that originally want to be planted in Chu Wanning. I never ever thought that it's actually like that

[collapse]

But the knives tho, I don't even know how many times I have cried. Fortunately I have known in advance that it's HE before I even start reading. If not, maybe I will feel that it's going to have a bad ending because there really is a time when I truly feel like it's impossible for this novel to have a happy end.

All in all, I really, really recommend you to read this. Don't be discouraged just bcs this has lots of knives. Because other than having many knives, this novel also has excellent plot, massive plot twists and of course, all the unique and intriguing characters.

This novel will always have a special place in my heart (although I never want to reread this, bcs it's that painful haha). I will need to heal my heart with some fluff novels after reading this.

Just—really, whoever you are that haven't tried reading this, you have to. Because it's that good. <<less

Since I dropped, I wanted to make a couple notes

  • this author is a real foodie, honestly aspirational. Once they wrote a thing titled "I'm hungry"

so they goes ham on the food descriptions and relates it to the characters and scenes like a real chinese foodie, which they are
  • the ML is a shockingly isolated, extremely independent, and overwhelmingly strong individual. In many ways, he represents the idealized form that some may fantasize about attaining. He has one real weakness (outside of his disaster life skills and social sense), and is extremely misunderstood in the beginning; that's the reason why his suffering is so painful to witness
  • the MC not going to lie, I just can't bring myself to like him. The MC is why I can't read this anymore. They took the dumb husky and really capitalized the "dumb" part;

his motivations and thought processes are petty and simple. Even when he works relentlessly to become a righteous and "good" person, he's still a mess that gets tiring to read about
  • cue the dynamic. Some may find it sweet, but I find it insufferable, tiresome, roundabout, and not engaging. If you like the main scum villain couple, this might be a gold mine for you. I really don't like this dynamic, so it made reading this really exhausting
  • WARNING: this has explicit torture, gore, r*pe, etc. While I don't mind it sometimes, this is important for anyone interested to keep in mind. These are past events, but the flashbacks are as detailed as the main narrative
  • I give this a 3.5; the saga may be great for some people, but I honestly can't bring myself to like the character, and the side characters are really "eh." Lots of imaginary bonus points for food and trinkets though

This series has one of the most bitter-sweet and heartbreaking romances I've ever seen in a bl novel. Assuming that a lot of you who are curious about this series are MXTX fans who have probably read at least MDZS/GDC or even TGCF/HOB, to give you some basis for comparison, while these two series can also be called "bitter-sweet" because they have their fair share of tragedies, the romances between lanzhan/weiying and huacheng/xielian are still pretty much what I would call "sweet". In many moments, the romantic developments of these... more>> couples are even able to act as a respite for readers amidst the tragedies unfolding in the main story. In Husky and his White Cat Shizun however, don't expect to let the main couple heal your heart because they're the ones who will be tearing it into pieces. Whether one can enjoy this depends on their taste for angst, but either way you should really be prepared to shed some tears (if you have a heart, that is).

Though, even for those who are scared of angst, I would still encourage you to give it a shot because this series also delivers some pretty solid fluff and heartwarming moments. Overall, I would say the novel is still pretty fun up till chapter 211. From there onwards it's time to prepare some tissues... <<less

Not for soft-hearted people.

In contrast of the people who cried and cried for this novel, I did not shed a tear; it was painful in some parts but it did not lead me to actually cry and such. As for the plot, it was epic, actually, if it was executed successfully. Personally, I think that it's way too long and because of the length, it got hard to execute the story. It was messy in the later parts; the transition and the message were so messy it was hard to... more>> follow and you'll just end up scrolling away. Of course, the lead characters bring so much joy when they interact. To be honest, I skip when there's no Chu Wanning and Mo Ran scenes just because... As for the extras, I skimmed and scanned for the scenes where CW and MR were present. I actually wished that Taxian-jun had more scenes because he's an interesting character- he's actually so hilarious and I feel bad whenever Chu Wanning ignores him.

Anyway, it would've been an epic story if only the author had managed to execute the plot successfully until the end. <<less
