The volume 1 of the novel is superb, the despair and evolution of MC, the challenge of the dungeon as he advances into deeper floors, the heroine who is a true companion with similar circumstances of MC and they make a deep bond while they help each other to survive, is a truly masterpiece of the isekai genre who deserves more than 5 stars but... only on volume 1, as soon volume 2 starts, everything goes downfall, it falls in every cliche you can think of with one dimensional boring... more>> characters and a nonexistent plot who tries to be serious or edgy but fails on it.

I personally dont recommend it, you will love volume 1 and will come back for more, but you will be dissapointed as you read more volumes. <<less

Whereas most of the JP protagonists are simps or overly dense, Arifureta's protagonist is edge lord, egoist, and extreme Yandere.

The plot of the novel is rather simple, where students of a classroom are transported to another world to become heroes to defeat the demon lord and his armies. This story revolves around our protagonist as he solves many Mysteries of the world to become a god.

The world where MC is transported is chaotic where strong are hailed high among masses with great respect and favors and weak are deemed useless... more>> and disdained. Our protagonist is also weak who is disdained by his classmates for being useless and weak in this chaotic world. As luck was not sided by the MC, MC nearly loses his life in one of the dungeons because of his classmate's betrayal. Now why his classmate betrayed him read to find it. This dungeon changed the fate of MC turning his world upside down and making him badass, where he also Mets love of his life Yue vampire princess. So you wanna at least wanna read volume 1

After surviving the dungeon where he realizes the truth of the world, MC becomes a psychopath whose only goal is to go to his home which is on the earth at any cost. Mc's character development Is shown throughout the novel where he transforms from a spineless coward without any powers to a badass psychopath and from there to a compassionate leader who can look out for others.

The first volume of the Novel was one of my favorites, but alas as the volumes increased, the story got bland and becomes repetitive because of the dungeons and their explorations, for example, an entire volume was dedicated to the arc where MC subordinates attack a king for their rights as Demi-humans and make him acknowledge them and stop the s*avery. Sure the theme of the arc was nice and interesting but the author kept streching the arc for the entire volume just for the assassination of the king which did not happen and at the end, he became his subordinate, it contradicts the previous arc and wastes our time on the volume. As such there are many similar minor or some major flaws throughout the novel.

Still reading till volume 11th was worth it, at the end of the 10th ad with the start of the 11th volume some real action begins, and the plot proceeds towards its end which makes things extremely interesting.

Another annoying part of the novel was mc's classmate, who for obvious reasons thought he was the center of the world, and with the entry of the MC in his life his belief contradicts which of course was hero complex and soon he collapses under his beliefs. Till then it was fine but for the entire novel, he keeps bugging MC which seriously starts to annoy me.

As for the harem, you girls fall for MC for no important reason, typical harem with one-dimensional characters. Still, his first love interest was interesting and the interactions between them were wholesome.

So, those who want to read the novel with badass MC rather than most JP novels where MC is simp or dense than this your cup of tea. <<less

Ahh this is so annoying, as the other low star said this series is utterly tr*sh, ngl.

First volume is pretty good start even I, hoping for the revenge to come after he made out in the abbys then out of nowhere, BAM!. He miraculously became a good fu*king shi*t to his classmate then focused on return to "JAPAN", like wtf? You're kidding right? All that suffering you experience and training you've made is just to return to japan. Like dude this is literally a tr*sh move.

Next is author really likes... more>> the yue and hajime ship A LOT which is the really annoying part, made you think that the romance only revolves around those two which is not really a harem like thing. Every pages contain "Yue, blah blah blah" plus no serious conversation for the other heroines. I was like "really? Why don't you just make it a normal romance no harem attached, mix party members girls and boys not all girls.". Its just your being a bias to one heroine while the harem is a thing in the story. You make a harem series add girls out of nowhere then made them just for the fanservice. I'm a fan of harem and isekai, read a lot of manga and LN, almost finish all harem and isekai series in KA (expect those anime that have too much drama) before the shutdown so I can tell if its really a bad series or not when it comes to those genre.

Lastly, the fights not really interesting to the point that its advisable to skip it to save some time cause the outcome still the same whatever happens. If you really got a lot of spare time then maybe you can read this but not advisable for those who just want to read and think that its a good series cause of the first volume which is likely not happening and mostly you'll get annoyed in this yue and hajime thing just like me if your here for the romance, cause thiiiiis really suck when it comes to that its gonna get in your nerves I assured you. <<less

Dont ever read this tr*sh of a novel. The first volumes was entertaining and I had great expectations for the series but author just keel adding unnecessary plot. Why you shouldnt read this.

1. Its supposed to be a dark novel about a guy who wants revenge. But oh boy those comedy ruined it. Too much Fan-Service is being used. But Ive ignored this part cause I want to see MC destroying his classmate for revenge (but I didnt get this part so I dropped the series)

2. The Harem is... more>> poorly done. F*ck. I don't mind harem as long as all the Heroines are likeable and had proper development but this sh*t just keeps adding more girls on our MC's harem for literally no reason. 3. Main Heroine (Yui) is f*cking unbearable. First she acts Hajime's d*ck is only mine (literally being a bit*h for the MC's dick) and suddenly stops after she cant control the situation and will just harass all the girl's that are part of our MC's Harem. 4. It is cliche and repetitive. The story is more or less (per volume) MC goes to another place, meet girls, encounter problems of girls she met, save the day, girl's added to MC's Harem. The girl's try their best to get a part of the MC's d*ck but Yui stops that leaving them for little to no character development. If you are fine with this then continue reading this. I expected a MC to be a revenge only (cold) minded kind of guy, getting few girls (was expecting Kaori and Shizuka on his side and they marry), the one's who summoned them are the true devil, and so on. But the author had another thing in mind and this was the reason why the novel sucks. <<less

If analysed, you'll find that almost the entirety of the main characters' personalities are influenced by or due to trauma.

Hajime is a broken kid who had to kill of every aspect of humanity just to survive the Great Orcus Labyrinth; Yue was trapped in isolation for almost three hundred years; Shea has seen so many of her people killed or sold into s*avery; Tio watched her hometown burn to the ground; Aiko is at first sad she couldn't save Hajime, then later is someone that weeps when she realises she's... more>> killed people; Shizuku breaks down from trying to be strong all the time in the Ice Cavern.

I doubt the author's intent was to write about such broken kids as a reason for anything more than edgy/chuuni cool ideation, but all of these kids are broken in some way, which makes this series more about humanity than almost anything I've read.

It's a bit too heavy on the tropes which is why it's only 3☆. <<less

Absolutely a great read well worth your time. It does get a bit repetitive and predictable in places, but even with that I still found myself enthralled by the story. The author does a very good job combining different elements of comedy and adventure as well. Not my favorite all time series, but solidly holding onto a top 10 or maybe even 5 spot.

This Light Novel is being animated! Expected release, Currently, is 2019.

This story is for all intents and purposes, is one of the better ones I have read in all my time here. The overall structure is sound, the plot develops at a reasonable pace, and it is well written enough to look decent in English. All in all this warrants 3, of the four stars, simply because it stands at a quality level unlike most novels. However, giving this story a solid 5 is completely unjustified for a number of... more>> reasons. Chief amongst these is that the author enjoys playing entirely too heavily on Hajime's otaku personality and his now "reforged" soul or morality. It is not enough of a problem to warrant not reading.

Let me put this bluntly, you will get completely SICK of his morality being reestablished so much, at least into the second volume. The story is interesting and actually original to some degree. I am picky, so very few novels will make me ignore their issues. This one did not, however, I still enjoyed it. If you're looking for a character-centric light novel, primarily focused on the character and less so on skills, this is a good one. If you dislike OP, then you'll be amused seeing as this one plays it as a complete joke.

If you wish to read this light novel, it can be read through Meido <<less

It's actually quite good. The first Volume was awesome. It showed the struggle "From Commonplace to World's Strongest" like the title implies. It was definitely emotional and started me towards reading the rest of the series. From there the story changes quite a bit and doesn't quite hit the same emotional tone. But it still does fairly well overall.

Particularly of note is that this is really like 2 stories running parallel to each other. We have our MC who starts out weak then becomes strong. We then also have the... more>> other character which the narrative switches around to every so often which started with cheat abilities and was already strong, he's the archetype dense male lead hero type. The contrast between the 2 stories is really what makes this story great. In 1 story it showcases that being Isekai is actually pretty terrible filled with lots of hardship and is really unreasonable. The other plays into the trope pretty hard. These 2 stories started in the same point, then diverge into wildly different ways and continue to meet and split up again over and over. But always the 2 lines merely intersect each other and never stay in twine for to long as they have there own themes that they play into.

Some Minor Spoilers in regard to some of the other reviews concern while I try to be as vague as possible

Spoiler

As mention the story tend to weave between the 2 story lines between our MC and the "Hero" party (the group that was OP from the start) But it also goes back and forth thematically. In the beginning the MC is hit really hard dramatically while the "Hero" party plays the Isekai part and is a bit comedic. However after the first arc the ton shifts as our MC goes Isekai trope hunting and the "Hero" party gets hit with drama. The 2 story lines though change frequently flips in tone (Not always drama) but the author does a good job of always picking contrasting tones between the 2 story lines to make it interesting.

Also there's a rule of cool system that takes place in terms of action it helps mitigate raising power levels by having cool action scenes separate from character growth. It isn't always about him being strong. It the MC growing as a person too. Part of that means he's kind of a crappy person in various ways until he grows out of it.

[collapse]

The series is extremely self aware but it plays into it really well when it needs to and contrast well when it wants to.

Also the MC is awesome. He's extremely decisive not dense protagonist here. He has a best girl and lets everyone know. <<less

I really like the series so far.

The protagonist is so overpowered that it's absolutely over the top but I like that for a change. To always be sure he will win anyway. Sometimes that's bad, somethimes that's just right and here it fits what I'm searching for.

But I do have some problems with this series.

I absolutely don't get the romance. I don't feel any sparks between Hajime and Yue at all. Nothing. She has been in the dungeon for 300 years without contact to anyone, so it may be logical... more>> to cling to your rescuer. He is a guy in the middle of puberty, so if a girl ambushes him in the bath... what can he do? But there is nothing more. I can't see any real romantic feeling. Especially Yue shows very little feelings in general. That the author described their relationship at first more like her mol*sting him may not have helped. Of course it was told with a wink, but since the earnest part was missing, it didn't work for me.

Spoiler

It got a bit... not sure... bizarre maybe, after his main-girlfriend Yue somewhat accepted his first concubine Shea (since it's genre is harem...), who is at this point a somewhat lovestruck travel companion or maybe friend.

quote:

Hajime knew Shea deserved some kind of reward.
"Shea. Is there anything you want me to do for you?"
"Eh? Anything I want you... to do for me?"
"Yeah. Think of it as like... a reward for your hard work. Just keep it reasonable, okay?" [...]
"Okay, then I want you to take my first—"
"Denied." Hajime instantly shot her down. Shea glared sulkily at him. [...]
"... Hajime, is it really impossible?" For some reason, Yue was taking Shea's side. Shea hugged Yue and started sobbing in her arms.
It was obvious Yue had no problem with Hajime sleeping with Shea. [...]
It wasn't everyday someone's lover asked them to have s*x with another girl. Hajime buried his face in his hands, despairing. But no matter what anyone said, he had his own principles.
"The only person my heart desires is you, Yue. I don't have anything against Shea, and I do care about her, but... I can't treat her the same as you." [...]
"I want to be faithful to you Yue. And no matter what the reason is, I don't think I could accept you having another man, either. Call me selfish or petty all you want, but... I was hoping you'd feel the same way about me, Yue. So whether it's Shea, or any other girl, could you please stop telling me to have s*x with them?" [...]
Other people might have found Hajime's words a bit too possessive, but Yue couldn't have been happier to hear them.

She is trying to sell him!! And being fathful and wanting a fathful girlfriend is possessive?? What's with that? Even if it is a harem novel, that's just stange.

[collapse]

I'm just really bad with the 'romantic' parts, because I don't find them romantic at all.

I also dislike Aiko-chan. I think she is supposed to be the perfect teacher, loved by all her students, but I just don't.
She is such a goody two-shoes. She acts all high and mighty about her virtue as a teacher. She only wants to protect them, she dosn't want them to have to fight, she dosn't wants them to risks their lives,.... They don't have to fight for these stranger, they shouldn't risk ther lives for a them, they are just children,.... All true. I'm absolutly with her.
But if she is the one to asks them to fight, to kill monsters, to risk their life, then it's the right thing. If she deems something worth saving even her precious students have a moral obligation to go to war.

Spoiler

She wants Hajime to fight a monster army of 40, 000.

quote:

"Nagumo-kun. Isn't... Isn't there something you can do about that monster army? No... I know you can fight them." [...]
Hajime averted his gaze, and Aiko pressed her case, urging him to help.
"Nagumo-kun, won't you please help us? At this rate this beautiful town will surely be destroyed. Worse, many people will lose their lives."
"... How unexpected. I always thought you prioritized your students before everyone else. Aren't you even only helping this country with its war because you're hoping it'll let them get home faster? And yet now you want one of your students to fight and possibly die for the sake of some strangers? Even when they don't want to? Isn't that exactly the same thing those war-hungry priests were trying to get us to do?"

That's right, Aiko, what's wrong with you? And then she starts to lecture him on his morality.

quote:

"Nagumo-kun, I understand that you have your own principles, and that you've already decided your path for the future. I won't try to change that, but I also think that no matter which future you choose, it's... too lonely to only live by ignoring everyone aside from those you care about. If you keep going like this, neither you nor the people you cherish will find happiness. If you want to find happiness... you can't lose sight of your kindness or empathy. You have to think of other people, even if it's only a little. Those are valuable qualities you possessed from the start... Please don't throw them away."

She dosn't really know how strong he or his friends are and it is an army of tens of thousands, so she essentially asks one of her precious students to risk his life and that of his friends.

The one leading this monster army to destroy the town and kill Aiko and the other students is another of her precious children. After the battle and after confessing his plan and showing his lunacy he gets mortally wounded and Aiko wants Hajime to save him since all her students are her precious babies and he is still one of them. Instead of saving him Hajime kills him after realizing he will never become sane again and will always be a threat.
So then Aiko starts to doubt Hajime. She is disappointed, maybe even angry and afrait of him and really gets worked up about it.

quote:

Why did Nagumo-kun kill him? They were classmates, weren't they...? Was it because he was an enemy? Is that all it takes...? Is killing someone really that easy? Is life really that cheap? That's not right... Humans aren't monsters... you can't just kill them like that... Is he just someone who can kill easily...? If I leave him alone will he kill other students too...? Is he that dangerous? If he hadn't been here, would Shimizu-kun still be alive? If he died, would all the other kids be safe? As long as he's here...

So an insane student that tried to kill her and some of her other students and a whole town has to be safed, but one that killed this one already mortally wounded (and not by him) boy to keep her, his friends and his classmates safe is the bad one. And all that after she expected him to kill for her, to fight a battle against monsters almost alone.

[collapse]

She does realizes how wrong that is and she also does know that she is very contradictory, but it still angers me to no end.

But overall it's quite good. <<less

Lot of people say this series is getting worst

We cannot denied it

I read this series 7 times from vol 1 till vol 10, and found what makes this series bad

Character = 0/0

Hajime is too naive till vol 10. He getting softer

And this series too much lovey dovey romance.

The language they use is for 10 y.o kids, but have 17+ y.o advice

Huuh, I love the setting about their world, its diffrent and more amazinh than diffrent isekai

But the character ruined this diamond series

Plot of the story makes sense if it were an RPG: typical weak-to-strong and godslaying climax. However, what irks me is the harem. Let me just abridge the how it built up, and explain the quirks of it:

How it built up: Typical damsel in distress and the MC saves her. (There are two unique cases but they are pretty forgettable).

The quirkS? Well, its mostly the Blonde Vampire Girl's fault. She is the Mary Sue of harem girls (if that makes sense). Whenever the MC acts aloof and chooses not to... more>> explain himself for his motives, you are guaranteed to see the line "Yue understands MC without any context, after all, the time spent bonding in the dungeon was basically their honeymoon". Its too perfect for me... Too unrealistic.

The only time the MC has a "lovers' quarrel" is with the rest of his harem. Speaking of these literal side h*es, they are only there to emphasize the MC's love/lust for Yue, or for comic relief. Never mind the fact that almost all of them fell in love cookie-cutter damsel in distress style. They are just there for pandering for self inserts.

Now, my real issue with Yue - the harem's queen - is the fact that she forces the MC to love the rest of his harem. Strange I know, but I can't help but repeat that it's pandering and it's unrealistic. It's straight up NTR. <<less

this is one of the best and most memorable novels I have read, starting from tragedy and going even further to despair to adding game elements and helping him stand up from the abyss to climbing out and finding hope, later the epic adventures where he has his sence of values and doesn't let anyone cross them. Note/Edit: This review does not contain direct spoilers, but I will be referring to some general things/concepts that may be considered as ones. If you wish to go into this novel 100% blind (which is highly recommended), please do not read this, or any other reviews, and just go for it (feel free to take a look at the last to paragraphs tho, as they are spoiler free).

This is amazing... Clearly one of the best (if not the best) novels I've ever read. The characters are great, and character development... more>> itself is brilliant. This is not your ordinary "MC wins a lottery, becomes OP in an another world and f*cks everything that moves novel". Not at all. This is a novel about true feelings and strength of heart. Do not misunderstand tho, it's not like the MC goes around trying to make friends with everyone and resolve conflicts via dialogue or smth. On the contrary, the MC is completely indifferent towards everyone except the people whom he considers to be his true comrades. Be it a cute flower, a monster, another human or even the whole world, the MC will slaughter everything on his path to make his companions smile (edit: When I say companions I do not mean the bunch of idiots that he is teleported to the other world with, but people he meets later on). This is very refreshing, as I am tired of "black and white" characters and worlds. The world building is very good as well (not the best I've ever seen, but great regardless). Every character is developed at a very good pace (not to slow and not too fast). The enemies are not mindless evil creatures that seek world domination. Every opponent he encounter has clear motives and distinct emotions (although, it's not like he (the MC) gives a sh*t). On top of that, the way that events unfold is very satisfying and you are never left thinking "wtf are you doing?" when the MC decides on an action. I could go on forever, but I think you get the gist of it.

Watch if: You like OP protagonists (the MC goes from weak to OP), good character development, and dungeon crawlers.

Do not watch if: You like mindless harem novels where the MC has interc**rse with everything that moves, flat characters with no clear backstory, motivation or feelings, and explicitly "good" or "bad" characters. <<less
