With the rising tide of steam power and machinery, who can come close to being a Beyonder? Shrouded in the fog of history and darkness, who or what is the lurking evil that murmurs into our ears?

Waking up to be faced with a string of mysteries, Zhou Mingrui finds himself reincarnated as Klein Moretti in an alternate Victorian-era world where he sees a world filled with machinery, cannons, dreadnoughts, airships, different machines, as well as Potions, Divination, Hexes, Tarot Cards, Sealed Artifacts…

The Light continues to shine but mystery has never gone far. Follow Klein as he finds himself entangled with the Churches of the world—both orthodox and unorthodox—while he slowly develops newfound powers thanks to the Beyonder potions.

Like the corresponding tarot card, The Fool, which is numbered 0—a number of unlimited potential—this is the legend of “The Fool”.

This novel is GOLD. While I do feel like the ending is a bit lacking and last 300 chapters were rushed, compared to the first 1000 chapters, I can somewhat understand why it went that way.

One of the best things here is the realistic world building that just makes the book feel like it's alive. The side characters have different personalities, making each and one of them unique, and almost all of them are likeable.

(There are some times that I personally really disliked Audrey, but there are also times... more>> that I like her, but that's only my opinion so...)

The only things that I dislike about this novel is it's a slow-burn one. Actually, that's a lie. After 1000 chapters, I miss those times when he was just chilling around with the Nighthawks and his siblings, but it is true that to first-time readers, it can get pretty boring. Honestly, I myself almoat fell asleep multiple times reading the early chapters of this book.

Just bare with it though, because I promise you that it's most definitely worth it.

I also have problems with the ending, but that's already mentioned above.

While it isn't perfect, it's one of the best fantasy novels (in this site,) that i've seen, and is definitely something that i'll be re-reading.

Someday, I wish that Mr. Fool's real name (Klein, not Zhou, because we don't need anyone finding out he's a transmigrator) reaches out to the whole world, and not just his other personas. <<less

Best novel I've ever read, absolutely amazing. If you like in-depth characters, intricate world building, and detailed plot then this story is for you. The characters are likable and the story is really interesting. The mystery pulls you in and when you solve one thing more problems arise, making it a million times more complicated than you thought (in a good way).

If I binge novels, I usually get bored at around chapter 800 to 900, but with this one I read all the available translated chapters in one go and... more>> am currently dying for more. <<less

Only one word for this novel is good enough. That is "pinnacle ". This novel is the only one that filled the void left behind by WMW and reverend Instanity.

Pros:

+Superb description of the world such as socio-economic interactions of the cities, internal politics and religious ideologies etc ... more>>
Spoiler

brought me tears when the women died due to hunger after she got good food and she slept. No novel can draw such a vivid picture as this. And this is one of many many more

[collapse]
. In all honesty the philosophical connotations are very relatable and easy to comprehend. +Excellent character building especially if you read further as more background / interactions happens

+superb storytelling and scenario buildup.

+each arc is told in such a way that the ending of the arc is like a rising crescendo or a symphony. Hard to believe that genres like wuxia/ xiaxia that comes all the time gets more praise than western / fantasy genre such as this novel and WMW. Only con is that the early chapters seems a bit of a drag as the huge amount of information about the world / mysticism can be boring to some readers.

Don't let this one slip by you. Especially if you love WMW or similar kind of genre. <<less

A legendary gem. Out of all the novels I read, this one is definitely one of the best I've ever read. A slow start yes but it's all worth it. Every character is multi-dimensional, they have all their own hobbies, character development. World building is above average.

If you could only give one 5 star on this site, this novel would deserve it.

It's weird because I tried reading this twice before giving up by c50 (not sure why but I guess I didn't like it?), but this is a webnovel that could've been a "real" novel. It's well planned out, there are good twists that are actually hinted at (reminds me of Revered Insanity), and side characters are unique and developed.

There is a reason that everyone so highly recommends this. Do not pass up on this one.

I made an account just to write a review. I'm not particularly critical nor full of analysis. All I can say, is that I heavily recommend this novel. It is perhaps, the greatest novel I have read to date. After reading all the way up to the raws (through MTL), looking through the archives of lofter, and joining the discord server, I can only say that I feel empty. Its that feeling you get when you finish such a good series that you've lost all will to start anything else.... more>> In any case, I absolutely recommend this novel. The lore is amazing, the worldbuilding has been portrayed in such a way that it feels as if you yourself are uncovering the mysteries of the universe, and the plot is extremely entertaining. Things are always changing and are dynamic, and the characters are good. I actually really like the side characters, it's amazing. In conclusion, more people should read this. <<less

It's well written, truly deserved its Title. I want to read this until the end. I have read dozens of novels but this one is mind-blowing and maybe my third list on my finished book.

I have some misgivings at the beginning because I can't stand POVs, though I have neglected it as story progressed. The MC is clever and every character is not some mannequins who can't think, this includes enemies. I don't know what 'masterpiece' means but this is the best novel I've read.

It's just that MC's use of... more>> skill is underwhelming, thinking from gamers perspective, but MC's uses of strategic movements is really good.

Edit (Jan. 03, 2021) : Finally finished reading this amazing book. After waiting for so long for this novel to completely translated, I started reading it again from the very beginning because I might not remember some scenes and plots. This novel really gives so much details that leaves my mind in jumble fortunately my memory isn't bad. After rereading, I found some things I couldn't find annoying in my first read, specially when you hated that character but she has the most appearance in this novel; it's bearable cuz I could skip if I wish but I didn't do for the purpose of reading everything. I could say that the end wasn't satisfying but it's not bad, It doesn't make me feel lost and make me eagerly looking forward for the sequel (if there is). For my final say, this will be my top on the list of my finished book. <<less

Guys, I read many novels but I never write a review for any of them but this novel forced me to write one. I will only say one thing that read this great novel without huge expectations and only when you are done with other novels. When I read this novel 1st time I thought it was slow paced and boring cause I was reading other novels too at that time I do not find anything unique about this novel and I dropped it at ch30 but guys I am... more>> soooo glad? That I gave it a 2nd try without expecting much the boring chapters were relevant for future development. Hands down this novel is pure masterpiece everything is so great in it like its characters it's unique story line, it story is the best among all other novels which I have read which is different from other transmigration novels, and it's world building and everything about it is awesome. I will say it's slow in starting and but if you can get around chapter 100 then everything starts to become interesting and make sense. One of the best points is that it has no harem.

Overall I would definitely recommend this to everyone read this you would definitely enjoy it ?? <<less

Lets first get this out of the way: novel is good, its better than many out there. But its not for me. Simply because of its characters, mainly the main character. Although the characters cant be called 1 dimensional, they dont really have much depth to them either. 'Good' guys will forever be 'good', and 'evil' guys be forever 'evil'; maybe its because of the rule author set about not going against their own character but its s*upid. Even if we take this rule into account, a single person cant... more>> be all good or all evil [I am using the modern society standards for good and evil here]. This is just bad characterization. Somehow, in this amazing storyline, u have this blip that sticks out and distracts u from truly immersing urself in it; the characters are that blip. The author has somehow made this into a good vs evil story. Everyone on mc's side is 'good', and everyone opposing them are 'evil'. MC himself is like that.

Spoiler

It mainly starts becoming obvious from second vol. He sticks his nose where it doesnt belong and it comes to bite his ass. He then says he learned from it, but he clearly doesnt. He again and again does the same thing, but still, for the major part of vol2, he restrained himself and gave up before delving in too deep in stuff that was unrelated to him. The sh*t really starts to happen from vol 3. I wont spoil the whole thing but I'll just explain a couple of events.
1. MC and some other random people arrive at an island with a ship. This island is only a stop so those random people get off to tour and have some food. MC also decides to do that but first does an divination; the result was that going to the island would be very dangerous for him. He then decides to not go. Then, he finds out those random people had left the ship, and guess what he does, he decides to brave the danger and go save them. A temp companion of his asks him why he changed his mind, MC answer was: They shared their meat with me; they paid for me [this was an extremely small amount that the captain had paid becuz he won a little in gambling]; they had cooperated with me[have no idea where this came from cuz MC was the one that helped them in a hunt, not the other way around]; etc etc.
2. MC was to board a ship. He already has the ticket to a ship sailing at 9 am. He then notices a few adventurers and remembers that there was something wrong with them[that they could be dangerous]. He also realizes that those adventurers were buying a ticket for a 10 am ship. From all this, u guys can already understand where this is going. MC burns his ticket and buys a 10 am ticket so that he can protect the 'innocent' people if something goes wrong.

[collapse]

Among the refined writing and good plot, this shitty characterization and MC with a hero complex like a japanese beta MC just put me off. So much so that I dropped this novel once, went back and again dropped it. I really respect the author. His throne of magical arcana novel is one of my fav ones. I havent read any other of his so I cant say if he changed the his character style suddenly, but this has disappointed me; badly. I hadnt started this novel expecting an MC like Fang Yuan from Reverend Insanity[which is another of my fav], but I was at least hoping to see a neutral character; or at least someone who has deeper thoughts than just 'he's evil, he has committed heinous sins, I am going to kill him' or 'they are innocent, I have to save/help them'. This is not something that can just be explained away by not acting against ur character. This is pure lack of depth. MC acts like a brainwashed person who has to 'uphold' the moral values and maintain 'justice' no matter what. No thoughts given as to why a certain person committed that crime or why someone does something good; its just black and white. Evil people commits crime, good people kill them; thats it.

Now, with all that said, this is a good novel and has a good storyline. So, if someone can handle such characters or like those types, they'll enjoy reading this. For me, I cant stand those types, so I am dropping it now. Maybe, I'll pick it in the future again but it wont be any time soon. <<less

One of the best mystery transmigration novels out there!
Spoiler

Summary:

The MC transmigrates from China into a world of fantasy, mystical artifacts, and evolution pathways that can lead to godhood. The body the MC transmigrates into was cursed by a mystical artifact and committed su*cide before the MC's soul occupied the body. With the sudden transmigration, the MC realizes that the luck ritual he performed for fun was the cause of everything. Now with a new body and new abilities, a thrilling adventure awaits!

MC:

The MC is part of the Seer/Fate pathway, with abilities that are similar to fortune-telling. The MC also has a mysterious gray fog ability that allows him to pull people from the real world into a different dimension in which the MC is considered a mysterious existence due to certain control over the gray fog. For ex.) in the gray fog, the MC's features are clouded over, so the people he pulls into the gray fog cannot see the MC clearly and assumes the MC to be something akin to an ancient god.

Side Characters:

All the side characters are flushed out very well with developed personalities and are important to moving the plot. Each character comes from a different background, so we don't have one-dimension characters that come from the same mold.

Overall:

The novel has an engaging storyline filled with action-packed scenes! There is no romance nor harem, which is a plus!

Oh. My. God. This novel is amazing.
It pulls you in and makes you feel attached to the characters, you walk along with their journeys, wherever they go.

The synopsis does not do it justice. It focuses on Magic/mysticism in an alternate world that is currently in the steam age.

This isn't the novel that will make me feel great for the time to come.

The writing style let you see a world seen and explored by Klein. With a deep sense of history, mystery, religion, psychology and mary sue.

The writing style makes you feel like a spectator watching something that happened, happening or will happen. Because of this I didn't feel attached to the characters. Just like seeing a person being born, live and will die. The writing isn't perfect but it gets the job done.

The RULES of this world... more>> is complicated and the characters have no choice but to follow the fate that have been written by someone else.

By being extraordinary you lose your choice. What you think is your will isn't actually yours but someone else's.

This is a dark world, Where everyone is a puppet and will follow what the puppeteer wants.

A great read if you have enough readers mind to follow the story. A good novel in this vast catalog worth of shit. <<less

After combing through tons of webnovels with interesting premise and raving reviews but only to end up disappointed, I finally decided to give Lord Of Mysteries a try.

This novel was a pleasant surprise for me because it's ACTUALLY well written. It's not perfect but compared to at least 70% of the things on webnovel dot com, LotM is definitely a couple of tiers higher. The author actually knows how to write, instead of slapping dumb and evil villains in front of the MC to eat. Things happen in the novel... more>> for a reason, and the subplots actually make sense and are utilised properly for building up the main storyline. Reading this novel feels like reading an actual published novel written by an author who sat down and spent days on research and world-building instead of someone who wrote a story with their phone during their lunchbreak.

Perhaps the biggest flaw of the novel is that compared to other webnovels it's really incredibly slow, especially if you're a reader who is used to transmigrator stories with cheat MCs and ultra talented cultivators then this novel will feel like you're forced to sit and watch a really S L O W procession while there's an intense itch on your scalp you can't scratch because your arms are tied down your chair.

Personally for me, the pace is fine and I like the small details the author puts in. I guess this specific characteristic of this novel is subjective but it works for me. There's also the issue of repeated usage of some specific words that some might find annoying but I think that's more of an issue with the translation and it gets less later on. A lot of the characters can also use a lot of fleshing out but I'm currently only on chapter 150+ so there's still a lot of potential for that.

edit: caught up to the translations! Changed my rating from 4* to 5*. This webnovel is amazing. Slow at first but super worth it and really picks up the pace after volume 1. <<less

[This review shall have points added to it from time to time]

There really isn't much I can say about how amazing this novel is, that hasn't already been said. But I will comment on a few things.

One, some people have a problem with the beginning. It may seem like filler, but the first few chapters are vital for setting the tone for the rest of the story. And once the story picks up... it picks up.

Two, some have an issue with klein's morals and others think he is wish washy... more>> and yet others think he is hypocritical. If klein didn't have his morals he wouldn't lose his very self that he has kept from modern society. I like that he didn't just toss them all away. He has also helped many people because of it. Klein isn't naive in my opinion, and he isn't hypocritical. While klein isn't the epitome of grace, he does not go around committing crimes left and right (like mu*der, pillaging, r*pe) like the bad guys he kills do. And if that ticks you off... then I have nothing to say.

Spoiler

And since he is at heart a nice guy going against his base attributes would make him lose control. For beyonder, they have to stay true to themselves. If way they live or think was suddenly changed without an adjustment period, they would lose control. This has less to do with morals and more to do with stability of character.

[collapse]

Three, there is character development in side characters. It's slow and subtle at times, especially with how packed this story is. Character development shows up differently in each character. Often times it's not some huge personality change, but a small change. (Read the spoiler below for an example.) Don't get attached to the side characters... trust me. They're amazing but they die like real people. It's amazing.

Spoiler

Justice hands down e experiences the most as a side character. She has been there since the beginning. If she dies I will give up on the world. She went from naive and idealistic to more observant and mature without getting rid of her kind and optimistic nature. Brilliant if I must say.

Leonard, also an early character (his change is more subtle, but mentioned), was a little prideful and viewed himself as a special protagonist in the beginning. That's basically gone by the chapter I am on. He is more mature and realizes that his cheat may actually get him killed.

Alger is a character that basically stays the same. But his reactions are hilarious. You don't know enough about his background yet, but there is gonna be some good development for him once it is revealed. you can also see him change the way he acts towards other members... his persona is very real.

THIS IS ALL MY OPINION -

This book and the MC is very boring, I have never felt so sad at reading a book so long due to the reviews being amazing. I'm disappointed. The book itself has interesting ideas yet I'm truly bored by the MC and his actions. Hes a dull character. He feels more like a supporting role than a MC.

I feel like I wasted time reading 160 chapters of this book that I want to cry. I kept reading expecting more, and it just wasn't happening.

The reason... more>> why I dislike this book:

Spoiler

1. The MC is too dull - his personality for me does not intrigue me due to how he thinks and acts. Hes not very smart or funny or anything. He has a plain personality.

2. The power he has is so amazing and interesting that it was the reason why I kept reading. The power is to gather these people all over the world in a secret dimension that he owns. They think of him as a god and cannot see his face. He would do these secret meeting and it was like a occult. However, what bore me was after 160 chapters he had no plans for this. I got bored by the loss of direction he was going with this power. It seemed there was no need for it almost when for me it was one of the most interesting part that I looked forward to. I feel disappointed.

3. I have no idea where plot was going. I just grew more bored.

This is probably the best written novel I have ever read the world building is flawless and there is no brainless characters that just go "oh you stared at me? I will criple your entire family" every character has a personality and a brain that actually works and the power system is perfectly done and inovative with clear explanations and origin the only flaw is that the novel is slow paced and OVERLY DETAILED to the point it's almost confusing,

I only started reading this novel because I was bored and tried it on a whim. I knew the almost all of the reviews are positive still I skipped this novel for a very long time. It's simple because I don't usually like this type of novels with dark gloomy undertones where we never know when and who will die next and the beginning was like that almost like a horror novel but I just wanted to get thro' the day so I continued to read and when I stopped... more>> reading it, it was bcoz there is no more translated chapters. So I went for the raws and continued reading it.

It is amazing. Each and every arc is carefully written by the author. The world building is awesome and it's power system is clear. Mysteries are abundant here and the payoffs are the cleared mysteries are not disappointing. Every answers for a question will lead to more bigger question. Even or perhaps his cheat, the gray mist in spiritual world, is a part of greater mystery. Him being transmigrated definitely has reasons.

Every powerful characters have set of rules they had to oblige with no exceptions including MC. This makes every confrontations interesting. MC is certainly strong for his level and his cheat certainly a boost but the rules makes it that if and when he acts carelessly things will go southwards for MC so does for his opponents.

Apart from all the mysteries, enemies are what make this story wonderful. Not their characters actually. Most of the time MC and his friends don't interact with major enemies of any particular arc until the end fighting of the arc. Some so far never even met. Enemies here mostly do not have anything against MC. Everyone have their plan and MC was used for the plan or accidentally involved in it or simply one of it's collateral victims. So he fight against them.

Even if the above all are good I would have dropped this novel, as it is not to my taste. The thing that makes me want to keep reading is Tarot Gathering and it's members. For one thing, it's a breather for me. The story is very intense and dark and even gloomy sometimes but the gathering adds a good change of tone. This is where MC is at his full confidence and full control. Every members adds a new life to otherwise monotonus survival story of MC. Every time gathering chapter comes it prevents the story from turning full blown serious.

Story has no romance and it's comedies are too low and make you chuckle at best. But it is an amazing read even for someone who usually does not read this type of stories. Give it some time, it will reward you with a great read. <<less
