City of Sin

Every drop of this family bloodline is stained with sin. They are the embodiment of contradiction; calm yet maniacal, with great memories yet often forgetful. They pledge themselves to their dreams yet often compromise, are angels that are also devils… It’s why I hate them. And also love them.

The only hope of his family, a youth with the blood of elves and demons walks on a battleground of annihilation and rebirth. He wills his way through boiling lava and icy depths, killing on this field of despair to strike down the lofty figure in his sight. One day he’ll grasp his blade tightly and survey his surroundings, only to find no more enemies to kill.

Well, it's my first time writing a review and since I'm from Brazil and my English is not so good there can be mistakes. The novel begins in an incredible way, well-built world, deep characters (even the secondary characters), but then the story suddenly turns into garbage, the MC is not in control of anything, I even doubt that he have authentic feelings after what passed with the first girl that he liked (including after what happens with her the real face of the novel shows). Good points of the... more>> novel: It shows the dark side of people well when they have power over the lives of others. The world is very well built and the history in excellent. Weaknesses: an MC that I can not seem to like, does not show the good side of humanity at any moment (we know the world well and we know that although rare goodness still exists) and worst of all, women with miserable lives + women with even more miserable lives + women with such miserable lives that it scares. The conclusion is that the author has prolemas with women: OMG, IT IS VERY SADISM AND HATE AGAINST WOMEN IN A SINGLE NOVEL. <<less

Couple of times I just couldn't get motivation to read this for different reasons but everytime I started to read I just couldn't stop. Reading this novel has only been a pleasure so far.

More like a fantasy story set in a darker setting with a slower more descriptive pacing. The story doesnt have the usual xianxia style of tropes and the world building is pretty good, unweiling as the story progress The MC feel more complex losing his naivity as the story progress and becoming a dark antihero that doesnt pull back from torturing people if he feels it neccesary. Some funny acting side characters act more like comic relief sometimes to break away from the darker setting.

The first chapters were a bit... more>> confusing... <<less

A bit of a mess so far, the story has not stabilized as of yet so some people might find trouble understanding what is going on exactly. However, the world building is one of the most interesting and unique I have come across in anything I have read. The mess is not even purely a bad thing, but makes the novel a very interesting read. The novel will probably become more understandable in the future when more chapters are translated. To be honest I really hope it doesn't become any... more>> more messy though, since I will have to stop reading if I understand it even less. <<less

I really like the writing style and the story appears to be going in a good direction. The world building is great as well. I'll keep my rating at 5 stars for right now and update as the story progresses, but at this point I highly recommend it.

This is basically Dungeons&Dragons fanfiction. There is no mind numbing s*upidity but the plot is quite bland and doesn't stand out.

The main character has unjustified daddy issues, but he becomes exactly like his father so his hate for him is hardly justified and certainly hypocritical. The author thinks it is cool to call his family "lunatics" so he does so every few chapters, but in reality they are not more lunatic than the other aristrocratic families from what their actions indicate. It is quite pathetic how he tries... more>> to force in our faces the belief that the family of the MC are the special kids on the block.

Actually the author undermines many of his attempts at subtlety for example showing the character development of the MC only through his actions, because everytime the MC learns something and acts differently he jumps to tell the readers: see, that day the MC's temperament changed blah blah and he knows blah. I guess it is his first book and he can still mature as a writer.

Also the MC has it quite easy and I don't think he encounters any real setbacks. The plot is also quite bland, but there are a few peculiar side characters that make it worth it. The girls have their own minds in contrats to the 1dimensional puppets of xianxia novels, but they are still bound by the curse of getting wet in 1 km radius of the MC's dick. Most of them are really well written although similar to each other, especially Flowsand, but again polygamy really makes things awkward.

The world tries to be realistic in its own context, but also the author also treats it as if it were a VR game. For example at one point the MC's spell of Thunderbolt or sth is amplified because it is cast in a forest (??).

Overall, this is an original book that broke free of the curse of xianxia novel tropes, but facing the criticism worthy of a real novel it is still an immature work. <<less

About Novel

This novel has power level, MC advancement, Magic, Command of Army, Harem (no shitty harem where every likable or sexy girl should be his partner), Strong and Proper Story Growth. So, it is a good recommendation.

About Author

... more>> This author, his level is way above those I have seen on Wuxiaworld or webnovel. No one in comparison man no one. I have read many novels, good reads but.... (I have no words)

I can't describe this feeling, it is keeping me attached. Brings so many details and so good things. This Author does not forget a single power MC has obtained rather improves them and displays their might every now and then. Not like other novels where powers come and they are not even mentioned in later chapters.

There are no loose stories, all things once said have been linked to some events that either come to a PROPER end or continue, and remain active. <<less

For dedicated webnovel readers, don't be mislead by the 4/5 rating. This is a masterpiece that has a slow start but is most well written webnovel I've read so far. I've read dozens of different webnovels but created an account just to make this review.

The first 100 chapters (approximately) are world building, the story starts off slow because the world is massive. As other reviews stated, there is inspiration from several fantasy sources, but it all flows naturally. If you've read Tales of the Reincarnated Lord, this story has a... more>> similar pace. I suspect this is where most of the low reviews come from. If you love army building webnovels, this is probably the best one.

The story is complex, tragic, and exciting. There's feasible strategy and tactics, with a MC that feels like a genuine human being. He struggles internally and externally with all the problems life is giving him, and grows. The female characters aren't entirely 2-Dimensional like many other webnovels. Each FL has a unique background and personality. They contribute to the story and MC's efforts. <<less

Incredibly great world building

Character got some massive development and side character got a screen time and some development

very good interaction between character

9.5/10 for me

and that's for the first 5 volume then after Klandor arc thing go downhill pretty fast...

Author seem to rush through a lot of thing with massive plot doesn't resolve

MC seem to turn into idiot sometime and side character fade into non-existant

especially the ending

Spoiler

What happened to flowsand is just bullshit. she sacrificed her live for richard could get back mountainsea which fade to non-exist after klandor arc and the timeskip in land of darkness is just bullshit. literally evolve in to Author vs Flowsand at this point. and then the reaper arc. MC got muddle-headed heroism out of nowhere then lead his follower and mountainsea in to oblivion

mountainsea just got kill of by fusing with broodmother by no reason at all.

Phaser got killled in one sentence. goddamn she is with you since book 2 I think?

In the end he is literally the strongest being so he gotta think of someway to help flowsand but nope.. he just went 'Nah she is suffering let her go" She literally spend all of her life trying to help MC and then got screentime less than martin in final chapter.

Awful ending

This was an excellent piece of translated literature that felt like a well-written native English epic fantasy series. The writing style was a complete breath of fresh air and the characters and world felt much more real and imaginable than most Chinese fantasy novels on here.

This novel felt like what WMW should have been to some degree. There are a lot of parallel ideas that I can see, but CoS didn't follow the same path.

Pros:

  • Great pacing for the first 90% of the novel and outstanding writing and translation quality
  • Solid descriptions that let you actually picture the environment and surroundings, which a lot of novels lack
  • No constant repetition of stuff we already know every few chapters
  • Decent world building + combat + magic
  • Great relationships and romance that felt like a more realistic progression compared to other novels
  • Fairly logical when it comes to science, magical explanations, and politics
Cons:

  • Some characters don't get a lot of "screen-time" as the series progresses
  • Some items or mechanics are slowly forgotten or not used
  • Last 10ish% of the novel felt unbelievably rushed, such that the resolution and relationship development was completely lacking.
    • Spoiler

There was so much build up for MC's excitement of reuniting with Sharon but its mostly glossed over

      [collapse]
  • Pretty common problem in every Chinese/Korean fantasy novel, but the lines between different "power levels/ranks" tend to get blurred towards the end, with most moves being pulled out of nowhere, to the point where you aren't sure what the MC is capable of until he's in the middle of a fight
  • MC is generally pragmatic and will eliminate future threats by just killing someone, but there are some cases where he arbitrarily lets someone go with a pretty weak excuse. That being said, those people that are let go often don't end up being threats or don't even appear again, which makes it a bit more believable that it is simply the MCs foresight (but it isn't always the case).
4.5/5 (I can forgive most of the cons because the pros outweigh them by a lot)

One of the very best web novels out there. This is for the mature readers, definitely not for the fans of standard wuxia drivel. The ending is difficult to stomach for many, not because it is "bad" or especially rushed, but as the readers are conditioned for certain kind of a story.

Spoiler

As the protagonist becomes stronger, he becomes more and more distant to his friends. He is an outlier that nobody can catch up to, and his power comes with a great sacrifice. Many expect a happy ending where the guy gets the girl in the end. This is more of a tragic, bittersweet kind of a thing.

And I find it very appropriate for the story the novel tells.

TL;DR: be very critical about low ratings, use your own judgement. <<less

i've divided the novel in two parts for this review - 1: before Lina died around v5c70 and 2: after Lina died...

So for part 1 ---

one of the best novels i've ever read. good plot pacing. sufficiently indepth characters. very nice plot setting. good harem & potential harem members. sufficiently bloody. overall amazing novel with 5 stars....

as for part 2 ---

now after Lina dies, we (readers) begin to understand that author doesn't hesitate to kill off important characters especially mc's women or potential women (as plot progresses) & we remember the tragedy tag present in the description, so as mc's powers increases gradually more sh*t happens in the story making readers rage...

as the bad premonition of story going downhill hits me I started searching internet of the fates of important likable characters of the story, depressing over the the results I decided to drop it....

the story is still acceptable for the next couple hundred chapters but after that..... sigh.....

author just decides to torment and kill mc's friends and lovers for not a f*cking good reason, the plot could have gone really really nice but.... sigh....

now I wonder if authors changed midway or something.....

so considering the later part of the novel I'm giving it overall 3 stars...

this novel had really big potential, but got ruined by the author.....

Why they tash talk like this novel. I really really wonder about people's choice that they like something like "recrination of the strongest sword god" but they hate "city of sins".

May be these guys are just some blamers but aIreally fulstrated upon seeing their reviews about first light novel which can place one or more things into my heart.

For those who love romance also themes of war and family matters difinitely like "City of sins"

But those who like strong MC kill entire family upon little matters aren't recommended to read.... more>> Because this novel is life like and not a dream land who can do whatever he want. <<less

This is a masterpiece plain and simple. If City of Sin dares to call itself a light novel then all other light novels ought to be ashamed of themselves. If your definition of filler is strict then there's hardly any, if not then absolutely none. Action scenes are both engaging and concise. There isn't constantly new antagonists just a level or two above the MC. The author has an actual grasp of human emotions and reactions, and actually considers them when writing. There's no point where characters lose 70 IQ... more>> points just for a plot device to work. Every character has a personality, and their personalities even develop over time! There were points where I felt like I was reading the love child of D&D and Mount and Blade.

The only real negative I can think of is that the author has a tendency to leave plots on the back burner for a while. So, while you get invested in the current plot you end up hoping the conclusion is right around the corner. Doesn't make for a healthy sleep schedule while bingeing.

Overall 11/5 would buy a hardcover in English if I could, hell I might even do it for a copy in Chinese. <<less

This novel is really good so far. But if you cant bear with math mistake and other small mistake you shouldn't read this. Not sure if its the authors or the translators fault, but often minutes and seconds are mixes up. Like it took only 3 minute for enemy to reach the MC on horse ride when they are close to each other. Or when it took only half minute to think for the MC in fight. Not sure why is half minute thinking is so fast in life/death fight.... more>> Other problem is mc-s company he has two ogre in his team but they are called 99 % of the time trolls, then 20 chapter later ogre again. They are ogres for sure. They can have two head, can be mage. They are big and tanky. (And has no regeneration power)

The word is realy similar to the age of adepts, just diferent plane. If you like thath novel you may like this one to. <<less

One of my all time favourites. MC, story, world building, powers... etc, are all to my liking. I really recommend this to everyone, its little slow in the beginnig, but later on it picks up the pace and getts better and better. Imo this novel is too underrated, give it a chance and be the judge yourself. :)

One important thing to mention, this book is a hardcore tragedy, has a rushed ending, and a healthy dose of NTR. The reason I gave it 3 stars is that I have a dislike for tragedies, the ending that really just f*cked things up and my dislike for Richard as a MC. I believe the author just wanted to finish the book, because there was enough content for another 500 chapters minimum if he decided to continue. So you're just left with tons of unresolved plot points, and some of... more>> these are very bloody important relating to the main love interest of the MC. Also the MC's power progression just skyrockets in the last 50 chapters nearing the ending, and he becomes really powerful without any buildup similar to ending of many chinese novels.

As for why this book is a tragedy :
Spoiler

All the women who end up liking the MC have a tragic end. For example Dragon Mage Lina didn't even get to talk about her feelings about Richard before she was killed. Alice also died. And the worst of all is Flowsand. Partway through the story, she leaves Richard to go to "The Darkness". Near the end, we realize that the time flow in the darkness is very different, and by the time he reaches there to find her, it has already been 3000 years and she is dead. And even after death, it is implied that Faceless is Flowsand, and is trying to protect Richard by becoming a Guardian of Eternal Dragon. And at the end she also leaves. Sacrificing everything of her just to protect this ungrateful shithead, and richard does nothing. At that point, he is powerful and can easily find hundreds of top level sacrifices for the eternal dragon in order to get her back, but nothing. Just this horribly sad and tragic ending

The novel is great. The MC isn't an overpowered existence that annihilate everything with a flick of a finger, he mostly uses strategies and commanding his army to annihilate his enemies. The girls aren't useless cheering squads but a fighting force that supports his army. The subordinates are also strong but some of them aren't even loyal to him and even wish to kill him but is supressed by his mighty wallet.

There is also the fact that he started from zero and not even that talented as the others.

The only... more>> problem is book 1 which was extremely boring and made me drop the novel for a year before picking it back up <<less

nice Serie, great power buildup for the MC and other characters.

  • power levels are well defined and different from other series putting a lot of emphasis on cultivation MC is strong but really works for it.

Everyone has at least an acceptable introduction, feelings and backstory to discover to some extent which makes the story and relationships more believable. the multiple plane/world makes the entire thing a bit hard to accept by time to time. It's nice that they all have different time speed and the likes though. a few relationships who turns to Romance... more>> but it's less about love and more about responsibilities, fun and letting steam out. <<less
