The novel story is quite good and at least I don't get bored by it. Yeah, I know the story kinda a down since the MC awakening from dormancy, but it still good. It tells about fulfiling dream / hope every scholar to applies what he knew to bring major improvement to the world, starting from math & physics.

The good :

  • Its kinda happy end although not too happy
    Spoiler

(at least the fiancee is alive)

    [collapse]
  • Good world building and system mission & leveling up is OK
  • The pace is good (although it talks a lot about many conjencture but you could skip it if you're bored)
  • I think the racism in this novel is quite moderate unlike other novel and othe opinion. Reader should understand it because the MC is chinesse (and also the author), therefore the dream to makes China great is reasonable
    Spoiler

yeah he kinda makes US to fall and there's Trump, but it just a tiny bit of the story and there's no quite excessive harashment. its kinda important to tells in the story because its a huge leap of tech, if there's no country involvement, it'll become a huge loophole instead, but maybe it prefered by other reader to disguise the country name in the novel

    [collapse]
The bad :

  • the woman that loves the MC (except her fiancee) such as Vera & Han Mengqi fate is kinda bad that I feel sorry for them
  • The void & natural disaster become such gliberrish and stay a mistery in the novel, maybe the author plans for season 2 ???
  • the time skip due to accident in Mars is kinda not make sense and the story went down after...
    Spoiler

although at least the story is finished and the author gives the waiting on time improvement reason, but the MC is basicaly already an immortal, so it still not make sense

I stopped myself after chapter 1500. I'm dropping this novel for now as I'm not a fan of where the story has gone although I believe the author had written himself into a corner. Despite this, I've enjoyed the days I spent reading this.

First, out of the countless Chinese novels I've read, this is one of the better ones as it's not utterly antagonistic against every other country or race. While the patriotism is still there in how the MC does everything to promote China nationalism, it's not to the... more>> point where everyone else comes off looking like inbred cousins. Outside of what seems to be a mocking of Elon Musk, international characters are pretty well treated in this novel.

Second, the author seems to have done his fair share of research into the sciences, at least from a layman's perspective. Clearly the results and proofs are most likely false but it adds character to the story and to Lu Zhou.

Third, I really enjoyed this interpretation of the "System" as it is more reliant on personal effort than just unlocking a level and having knowledge thrown at you as compared to other system novels. While the system is able to stuff knowledge into Lu Zhou's head, the costs are large enough that he only does it a few times throughout the 1500 chapters I've read.

As to why I gave this novel three stars, I am not a fan of the change in scenary around the 1400 chapter range. I believe the relic arc should be retconned to have ended the story there as the story left on a fairly high note. They extended it a bit too far and now I feel a little tired of the story.

As stated before, I understand why the author did this as he had written himself into a well. Lu Zhou had no opponents left in the academic, aerospace, popularity, political, and military field due to what he had brought. He was one of, if not, the richest persons in the world. He had no challenges left. The author had to decide to continue the story with no suspense or regress Lu Zhou so that more plot could be created. The author chose to regress Lu Zhou's abilities. Everything that Lu Zhou had besides a bare minimum were no more.

And that's where I've decided to drop the story. In a few of these novels I've read, they always follow a pattern: The main character starts in area A, faces adversity, and he reaches the top of area A. Then he either chooses or is forced to move to area B due to the system. And everything repeats. Then C, D, to infinity and beyond. I'm not reading that.

It's a good story but with a lackluster plot towards the end. That's my personal opinion. <<less

The concept is interesting. The author clearly did a lot of research to make sure he wasn't talking complete bollocks when discussing these topics the MC is learning. I kind of wish the story started off with a high schooler, or a student in a less prestigious college, or something. Have the MC build up a base of knowledge at the beginning, instead of claiming to be doing that but already being in advanced math and stuff because he's already learned a bunch. Sure, to the system his existing level... more>> of knowledge is worthless and so it's not much of a difference, but it doesn't feel that way for the reader. In the beginning, the MC was viewed as an idiot by his roommates and other people in his department, but he still made it into one of the best colleges in the country. Again, massive disconnect with the audience. I get that by starting it when he's in college, he has access to the library with whatever knowledge or book the author needed and it was pretty believable. To me it just feels like it started at a weird place. Others might not feel that.

Another problem is that any time you have a character introducing new knowledge or technology into the world it's impossible to think of all of the ramifications it would have. In a novel like this where that's all the MC is doing, it becomes a very hollow feeling sci-fi. There's so much more that could be there, society and civilization would change so much, but that's outside of the scope of these kinds of novels and it's sad.

One last complaint; jesus christ the h*mophobia is one of the worst I've seen in any Chinese novel. I've read numerous Chinese webnovels so I know that you're pretty much guaranteed to have at least one character who is evil and in your face gay. They're minor and you can just move on, hoping one day the Chinese will move past this. But my god, the amount of times a male character would jump to something along the lines of "Why are you looking at me, are you gay or something, " driving the other person into a frenzy until the person who made the comment apologized. Near the beginning, one of the characters straight up tells the MC, "This person is bad. Like, really bad. I heard he likes men." And the MC is horrified and immediately wants to have nothing to do with the guy and keep as much distance as possible, even though he could be a good business partner and give him the starting capital he needs. It's so disgusting and the fact that it's a reoccurring "joke" makes it far harder to tolerate all the other issues since you're constantly annoyed at the author/characters. His female characters are also weird. Some of them will be portrayed in the most incel way imaginable where they're literally the spawn of satan and only trying to manipulate the poor ol' men and describes it as if it's common and something guys have to be constantly vigilant about. And then most of the rest are fine and about what you'd expect for a Chinese novel. <<less

I read this because of the author's other story, mansion in postapocalyptic world (or however the title went). Seeing that this novel was newer, I had expectations — you know, the other story was decent, and surely the author's next work will be better — but I failed to see them fulfilled. Not gonna hide, I read it for the harem, and after almost 500 chaps of not seeing any developments, I read the other reviews for spoilers, and oh boy, if you also came here for the harem tag... more>> (or even just the romantic subplot one), I have one advice for you: don't waste your time.

Setting is okayish. We get modern Earth, and it doesn't have any unrealistic components (except for the eponymous system, of course). The tag [slice of life] calls it — don't expect any laser guns and futuristic robots (at least not anytime soon). The setting isn't bad overall for what it is. The author has put some real effort into scientific theory (I suck at math, so I can't tell how realistic it is, but it's enough to fry my brain, so it seems legit enough). I also like the whole [academic world] thing: it's rare for a Chinese webnovel to be so normal (especially if you keep reading those modern cultivation stories). It kind of resembles Medical System (or whatever the novel was called).

Also, the story is relatively racism-free (at least the first 500 chapters) for a Chinese webnovel. There's no China numba 1 crap (though the author didn't forget to include the [we're worse now, but just you wait and see] thing), and Western characters are normal people, many of which the MC is friends with or takes in as students as a professor (and he doesn't even take mostly Chinese students under him). He also has no issue living and working in the US. Well, I think the author doesn't like the black people, though. There's little mention of them, and none of it too good.

The plot is, well, slice-of-life-ish. It's mostly just the protagonist advancing through academic ranks and researching. I was patient at first since this author's other, better novel (the one I mentioned at the very start) also had a slow start, and the story is a nice break from all the cultivation and fantasy stuff, but it really gets boring sooner or later.

The protagonist is a Gary Stu. He does have some original features (such as narcissism... let's be real, negative traits are characterization too, and it's only normal that a character has one or two at the very least), but they're few and far between. He's mildly likable, but mostly due to a lack of annoying personality rather than possession of a charismatic one. It's nice that he's someone who enjoys studying and research (it's possible to be like this, and it's a good trait for a scholar), but it's a real pity that it goes to the extent of some kind of asociality and asexuality (yeah, the guy keeps on being jealous of those who have girlfriends, but he has no interest in the plethora of female interests that were introduced, including some that have a crush on him).

I generally like the friendship and work relationships between the characters in the novel. They're written nicely. However, it feels as though there's some secret police grunt holding a gun to the author's head, making sure he won't cross the line and write anything too le*d (and romance, may I add, is probably too wild to a honest working man living in a communist society with a social credit system). As for other characters themselves, they're okay, but there are no truly deep personalities among them, not to mention any characters that you really feel for or get into.

The translation and editing is okayish. There are some mistakes, but they're not any basic ones, and they're minor and infrequent enough not to ruin the experience when you read the story. Just like another reviewer, though, I'll just say that the word "nutty" is heavily overused, whether that's the translator's or the author's fault. And yes, if you think it sounds as if I think that "nutty" is a lame slang word, then you're right.

Overall, I don't really recommend this novel, unless you want to read a slice-of-life story about a mathematician or physician (or chemist, I guess) making a career in academic world with the help of a system.

Again, don't ever read this for harem/romance. It sucks and gets nowhere. <<less

Fun and enjoyable at early chapters but gets worse at latter parts for my personal opinion. It would have been great if drama was also made core for this novel novel, love and relationship, in short romance. It gets boring with out this kind of entertainments. There are also many side characters being forgotten and left out in the story. Novel is not much of a potential for me I guess

The author is at the very least well read in various aspects of theory in Math and to some degree science. He offers several conjectures and other theoretical problems up as part of his writing content. Like most authors who do the same he gives the basic problem and then suggests that his MC has solved the problem through some unconventional means and offers a bit of those means to provide some authenticity.

Unfortunately the author interjects politics into the story as well as some atheist beliefs. The atheist beliefs can... more>> be said to be part of the MC's character as he is supposed to be some academic wonder-kid, but the presence of his gold-finger kind-of creates a problem for his disbelief in a higher power. As for his political interjections they are jarring at best though fortunately they are rare and more of a side comment.

The normal nationalistic parts seem to be missing in this story to a large degree or they are much more subtle then in many similar types of stories. Interestingly enough the MC seems to have less desire to be involved in China's politics and wants to avoid the nationalism that seems to be required. He is still desirous of keeping China's economy in Chinese hands which is a much more subtle approach. The author still incorporates some of the nationalism with his other characters that have influence on the MC. Of note the normal desire to bring glory to one's country by being the first of one's country to accomplish some task or get some award or create some breakthrough or make one's own country have massive advances in several fields is definitely present in this story. This to me is a normal for all authors that work with modern times and the current world as the background template for their stories. I see this sort of 'nationalism/racism/groupism' all the time, and while not truly acceptable as quality storytelling it is always to be expected. This problem could really only be solved when the author actively decides to make his MC of an apposing nationality such as a Chinese person using Japan or Korea as the background nation with the MC being of Japanese or Korean decent. When doing something of this nature it brings in other problems of authenticity as the author is not going to really be able to tell a story from the viewpoint of a person of an opposing nation. <<less

I enjoy this novel and share the view that the science is just advanced enough to be unique and interesting and skipped over enough for it not to bore the layman.

As for the nationalism in the book: I agree, that it is quite subtle and a LOT better than in 99% of the chinese novels out there. The author does not use the simplistic "all Chinese good, all others bad". What irks me though, is the understandable when considering the authors perspective view that the higher Chinese authorities always want... more>> the best for Chinese people and always make the best decisions, whereas in other countries (mostly America) the leaders are all either corrupt or braindead (I can understand this assessment of Trump, but it's the same for all the different agencies and organizations). It is clear to me that the author cannot criticize the CCP, but nonetheless it leaves a bad taste after an otherwise very fine novel so far. <<less

I am surprised this novel written by the same author of *i have mansion in another world* I was pissed in that novel because the MC is too h**ny, and the opposite in this novel, the MC lack of interest to women.

Honestly despite not understand most science written in the novel, I google some info that I find interesting and that increase my knowledge about science and their expert. Thx to the author for promoting sciences here.

As someone from different countries from china, usa and europe. I want to say... more>> this novel isnt that nationalistic. MC clearly said chinese scholars write some garbage theses or their netizen keyboard behavior. I have seen the actual novel that's way too nationalistic and chauvinism. In "i have mansion in another world" the author even avoid MC developing in china because china big bosses want his company. He practically enemies with every countries leader except philiphine rebel lol.

now my review about this novel I should give it 5 but the timeskip and the new character dump after really annoying so the actual rating I give is 4, but it pissed me that the total rating of this novel way too low so I just give it a 5 so the average increase a bit. I'm sad most of the characters that live for 1400 chapters gone for unnecessary plot hole. But at least I'm happy with the ending. Too bad xiao ai didnt get power up to be as strong as general reinhardt. <<less

I actually really enjoyed the novel (despite some of its shortcomings) until the end. I read the whole thing but got majorly disappointed when the author gave a cop-out ending. Several things that are set up even from early on in the novel aren't solved.

Spoiler

We kind of get an 'and on he went towards his next adventures' ending. The author gave hints that his loved ones were still alive on another planet but we don't get to see it.

[collapse]

The math and science problems were super interesting, but I'm definitely a person with zero knowledge to begin with so if you're not it would probably bother you more. I can tell the author put a lot of research into those aspects and I appreciated it.

Do NOT read for romance, it says subplot but it's really closer to nonexistent. It takes over 1000 chapters to see romance and once we do it's immediately redirected into science again and we don't see the romance until the end (not even).
Spoiler

After about 1000 chapters he gets a fiance but then goes straight into cryosleep and they're separated. He goes to reunite with her but we never even see if she's still alive or not.

[collapse]

There are racist moments in this novel, in some ways fueled by cultural differences that may seem less offensive, but also by playing heavily into stereotypes when writing about other countries. Personally, it takes me out of the moment when the author suddenly brings in Elon Musk as a character, but I could see others finding it funny.

not bad at all... reasonable racism given its written by a chinese.. believe me... its much less than the world online... that was also a good novel
also not a bad story..i would be happy if something like this happened in our world someday as it will propel us faster in future given how slow our growth has become.
romance is kinda zero.

i only read it till 1000+ chapters though coz when they reach the vr games arc I kinda had the urge to read one of those and dropped... more>> it there itself :D (any self respecting gamer would want a good quality vr to come alive soon just like SAO)

yeah it was good till then... it was going towards the china number 1 west bad direction bt it was still reasonable enough. I kinda read some spoilers about things which happened during ch 1300s... which kinda turned me off so that also was a factor in dropping this..
anyway a 5* for this..i enjoyed it while it lasted <<less

It's good. I've pretty much stopped playing games over the past couple weeks to read this more.

The tech and historical realism isnt great, but if you dont have a background then its fine, you can accept it as fiction pretty easy.

For example, when there's details on him learning to program (the only time in the whole book, about 2 chapters), the author mentions c++ and Python, and talks about how python is the best for beginners because of igs easy to use syntax, but also talks about how its one... more>> of the best for writing optimized code, which is just blatantly wrong afaik. Standard python has a C backend for optimized operations, because Python is a higher level language

I'll mostly address complaints I've seen in other reviews here, spoiler alert.

Nationalism: Yeah maybe sorta but also not really? I don't remember this at all tbh.

Throughout the Princeton arc the Chinese are constantly worried that he's not going to return to China. When he goes back, it's repeatedly referred to as a second world country even after they've developed fusion energy, with second-rate scholars and an excess of fake reportd in academia. All of the reseaech he does is posted publically online/to journals. Of course he doesn't just give patents away, but he ignores the business side as much as he can. The only real nationalism I can think of is them using these new technologies to develop geopolitical power, which yeah.. How else would it work?

Relationships

There's only 3 love interests (Xiao Ai not included). Yushan he helps regularly in the library in the early days

Mengqi he tutors in high school

Vera he teaches in Uni

He himself, as mentioned by the author in the book, has a very low EQ and extreme focus on learning. He even realizes at one point (very early) that the systems +int boosts are pushing his mind even more towards the logical side, and eventually he gets an upgrade that it claims pushes his rationality even further (Mars). He doesnt notice any flirting nor does he pursue any girls around him, but when his lack of a relationship is brought up by the people around him its sometimes mentioned that he knows he's avoiding the problem.

Yushan ends up being closest to him for a long time, being recruited as his CEO and taking care of his business. They get together after 9 years of knowing each other.

Mengqi's family is going through a divorce and she's living with her controlling mother when MC starts tutoring her and helping her out of depression.

Vera's step-father is an abusive alcoholic and it's mentioned that MC is the only one that ever cared about her. Eventually she confesses and MC asks if its love or dependence and she eventually agrees with dependence, though later shes unsure once again.

Most other women that approach are because he's famous and handsome.

Narcissicism/humblebragging

I didnt really notice the humblebrags, but yeah characters in the story comment on it occasionally.

I dont really see the narcissicism. Maybe when it comes to his appearance, but that's mostly a humor thing - he'll hop on his social media and like comments that call him handsome (maybe 4 times in the story). I found it pretty funny whenever he's trying to figure out why someone is reacting a particular way and he's like "Maybe... its because I'm handsome?"

If people think he's narcissicistic about his research, well its regularly mentioned how research relies on the progress other people have made. Pre-mars, even when he's pretty much at the peak, he still relies on other people to help his research - both historically, referencing journals (even during retreats) and forming research groups for top-level projects.

Mars

Reinhardt never tells him that he's going to have to go dormant. He just says you can leave now and have a stable and happy life.

MC obviously isnt going to stop, he's been told he's the Chosen One and this universe will end if he doesn't save it, and he wants to keep researching and find tbe truth of the universe so of course he goes forward.

The Ending

Sort of dissapointing.

Around ch1000 the world gets scifi and you start to look towards the distant future and speculate on how he'll develop humanity to survive, but it doesnt really go anywhere.

Totally predictable that Yushan went dormant to wait for the interstellar era, though the memory loss is a bit random.

Its not as bad as I was expecting, and I can see why it stops here but still a bit sad we never got to see colonization, galactic war, end of the universe and void arcs. <<less

Till this story reached 1300 it is five stars for me.

But after that, not so much.

The first half of the book was awesome, the exploration of mathematics and science, in general, was very nice, I love reading it!

But after I'm kind of annoyed and cannot find that excitement anymore, but still this will be one of the books I love dearly.

Maybe I will read the rest someday, just to see how everything folds out.

I liked it. I agree that it's not the best story but the 3 star rating doesn't give it enough justice. This might not be a good story for everyone but for me, I enjoyed it. Although it got boring at the end, it's still good because I managed to finish it. I rate it about 4.1/5.

pros

    • okay deus ex machina plot armor
    • okay MC...i guess
    • great premise
cons

    • too much info dump and filler to get to the "meat" of the chapter/s... its like waiting at a restaurant for your order---only to be asked to be patient... and they constantly served tap water---in your face
    • bullsh*t about "not being s*ave to the system"... boyo if you have such "morals" you shouldn't have used it in the first place... stop bullshitting me
    • i can only suspend so much disbelief... he already has a plot armor... but his luck is also a plot armor---the author just hands things to the MC on a golden platter
    • beautiful women literally throwing themselves at MC just becoz and not taking a bite? f*ck off mc!
    • novel is over-hyped so much... its ret*rded... for you to like it

this is nice.

the author did a good job researching the topic,

long story short just read other (long) reviewer they did laid out all the bad and good in this novel but there's spoiler so up to you.

my recommendation is read it until ch1000 because for what I take there's a lot of BS later on (after doing almost "godly" in science there's bound to be a lot BS to continue the story)

The novel was interesting at first, I personally don't understand the math or science, so I don't know how accurate it is but it was fun a read. However, the author adds a lot of politics and naturally that leads to a lot of nationalistic comments. This is fine as you have to accept some nationalistic inputs when you read Chinese novels but he goes pretty racist against Americans, Koreans and what not. I just couldn't continue at that point, if it doesn't affect you much then maybe you had... more>> a better experience or will have a better experience. <<less

This is a modern-day sci-fi system series that starts off with the MC struggling his way through college. He arrogantly tries to stay outside passing out flyers for pocket change while wearing a mascot costume in extreme heat and has a heat stroke, which allows him to connect with his system. This system allows him to study hard and learn mathematics and science easily. He uses the ability gained from the system to score perfectly in math and completely neglects other courses required to graduate, such as history.

The MC emphasizes... more>> memorization over learning. There is a ton of reading with minimal practice and application. Anyone who's struggled with calculus, organic chemistry, or any other difficult courses but came on top of them in the end can tell you that practice problems and discussion are the ways to survival. My organic chemistry teacher, who was also the chemistry department head back when I was getting my bachelor's, always told us to keep practicing until we dropped and then to get up and practice again. This strategy was effective, albeit painful. The MC does not do that and focuses on using rote memorization to comprehend math and computer science of all things. He just reads the books and skips all the intermediate steps to quickly produce something, whether it is a thesis paper or an app. When he needs something, it falls into his lab whether it is fame, connections, money, or something else. The plot-kai is gradually becoming stronger, and the MC is coming off as overpowered, which can be entertaining for a moment but then quickly becomes boring. This really cuts the suspense and limits the opportunity readers have to cheer for the MC as he struggles and works hard. Training montages are great things.

The science and math don't necessarily make sense or agree with the rules and standards of our world. Although it's fun to read arguments from the flustered experts in computer science ranting in the comments section, anyone who is a stickler in said fields may want to turn a blind eye to some of the MC's actions and reasoning. So far, he's focused on math and computer programming.

That said, the beginning of the series is excellent at motivating people to get back into studying and self-improvement. This series came across as inspirational and made me want to get back into studying more, even though I've already graduated.

The MC appears as a genius thanks to his system, but he's still an immature college freshman who impulsively does things without planning them out. Even after the heat stroke episode, he can't seem to stay out of trouble for even a full month. Even though he doesn't plan things out, the Plot God comes to his rescue with serendipitous encounters, which I mentioned before. He never seems to face any negative repercussions of his actions, which limits his opportunity for character development.

Overall, the MC's depth is quite lacking. Even when mentioning his pitiful family, there's not much connect to them, and hardly anything has been revealed about them. The side-characters are even worse... They essentially exist as their roles rather than complex, realistic characters of their own. It's hard to develop an emotional attachment to anyone in this series thus far.

The racism and sexism are minor so far, but they are present.

Henyee Translations does an excellent job, as per usual. They could compete to be one of the best translation teams on all of Web Novel. Grammatical errors and typos are minor.

This series has an excellent start, and I even donated spirit stones to it. More recently, however, the plot feels forced and more insensible. The MC is not giving me the inspirational vibe he did in the beginning, and the story line seems to be dragging. If the series goes back to its original quality or improves on its weak points, then I may continue to read it. If the current quality stays the same or worsens, then I'll probably drop it when it goes premium. I hope this is only a temporary issue. <<less
