It's a shitty, repetitive, slap-stick humor novel like anything else done by Silkworm. The only reason I don't score it a 1/5 is solely because there are far worse piles of sh*t like MGA that exist. The more I read chinese novels, the less I feel like they're for me. This is what communism does, folks: Kills creativity.

I've read roughly 300-500+ chapters of each of this guy's novels. They all boil down to: Village idiot bestie, a MC that flip-flops between being serious and being a complete "comical" twit, and... more>> a bunch of cookie cutter harem candidates. Splice in some villains that literally embody the term and boom, you've got yourself a Silkworm novel. A novel riddled with cliches and very little substance that makes one question how someone could earn any kind of currency off a sub-par product. <<less

This is one of those generic novels that many bemoan, but it's done pretty well. Nothing stands out as particularly great but it will keep you turning the pages.

  • Worldbuilding is pretty good, MC does get great treasures and powers along the way and while they are interesting they're never super OP, where he's beating guys multiple realms above him. This happens once early in the novel, but you can actually see the growth of the author as he adjusts this treasure to give a good but not overwhelming advantage against geniuses, who in turn have their own OP cheat. The OP items usually also have drawbacks to balance them out.
  • Other characters are okay, nothing special. They generally have their own goals though it does feel like the whole world revolves around the MC.
  • Unfortunately we do have some word count padding with the multiple opinions and reactions POV common to Chinese LN.
  • We also get the generic sect politics and the fight-train-fight routine.
But there are almost no immersion destroying moments and MC never goes full ret*rd. Recommended if you are craving a dose of wish fulfillment LN.

Please don't be fooled by the decent start. Yes, for a few dozen chapters, the novel isn't half bad.

After that, it's basically a copy+paste of WDQK, down to literally every trope:

- powerful legendary beast companion with a legendary bloodline
- beauties that "topple empires" all swarming around the MC
- c*ckroach antagonist that just doesn't die
- MC joining a previously strong sect that is now in decline
- MC who a l w a y s makes breakthroughs during battles and suddenly turns the situation around
-... more>> 2-3 chapters in a row of the crowd's reaction towards MC's deeds
- annoying s*upid shits and useless women that badmouth the MC and act proud for no fken reason
---------
What quickly became aggravating was how for nearly 500 chapters (that's how far I managed to bear with this) the MC is ALWAYS despised, sneered at and underestimated. He repeatedly performs miracles but it's like every single character in this novel is an imbecile suffering of Alzheimer.
-------------
The only fun thing about this novel is the MC's interactions with Yaoyao.

^But even this point is smudged with sh*t by the ridiculous number of "top-tier beauties" that gravitate around the MC every time.

It's just bad. Won't recommend. <<less

Honnestly, it started great.

The plot was interesting, world building was good, MC was likeable and relatively smart however everything downgraded near chapter 250~.

MC became a spineless coward in front of pretty girls, he can get bullied, threatened, mocked etc... he will never feel wronged, in the contrary he will feel like he was the one who wronged them.

This MC is not the protagonist at all, all the attention is grabbed by his female companion who is more talented, stronger etc... He get carried by her and her pet everytime and... more>> even if he know she hold some contempt and disdain toward him, he don't care at all, letting her bully him without a care.

Characters are also extremely dumb, MC can somehow fight 3 to 4 realm higher than him but all they say is "He have some ability after all" you know the classic underdog shit, however in this novel it's all the time. Like there isn't a fight where he isn't understimated. It can happen 3 times in a row with the SAME PEOPLE like he will fight someone and they will say "He will definitely lose in front of him etc..." when he beat the random 3 stages higher than him and meet someone also 3 stage higher than him they will say "He have some luck but in front of him he will lose, he is just a 1st realm cultivator after all" THE SAME PEOPLE WHO SAW HIM BEAT CULTIVATOR STRONGER THAN HIM WILL CONTINUE TO UNDERSTIMATE HIM !

It's at this level.

Personally I dropped when
Spoiler

MC peek unintentionally at one pretty core disciple in her bath time, of course the girl trie to kill him and chase him, her killing intent is real, you must think that MC would feel wronged after all is it necessary to kill ? But now this guy instead feel like he wronged her and accept to hand her his cultivation ressources just because he want to improve his impression on her, would that be the reaction of someone with some dignity and self-esteem ? The girl simply don't care about him, she even have some contempt toward him but MC can't do nothing in front of a pretty girl. Do you know how he justify this behavior ?

"Never offend a woman.

Especially one that was so pretty."

he said that... Honnestly I think that author is a masochist.

This story is overwhelmingly underwhelming. Meaning it sucks so bad, it actually is good at being bad. Imagine if someone tries their best in an exam only to obtain 30%. Now imagine if they consistently obtained 30% on every test even though they tried their utmost best. Eventually they will become a pro at getting 30%. Nothing worthy of praise or anything good. 30% is a failure on all fronts but it indicates a try was made. This novel is that 30% result.

Why did I give it 30%. Mainly because... more>> its too predictable. Nothing exciting happens, MC always wins. No dramatic scenes where you think 'maybe, just maybe MC may lose.' but nope he wins at everything every time. No problem at winning every time, but when your entire premise is about mc's talent being stolen at a young age. It doesn't make sense to make him the most talented without his excellent talent that was robbed from him at birth.

the women. Ahh the typical heavenly silk worm novels where only women and beasts are allowed to get close with the MC. Anyone else has to be a woman, who of course has to be a peerless beauty. Thats something I cant stand about this novel. Whenever a women is the mc's enemy it becomes even more predictable as to what happens next. Female enemies? Must be a misunderstanding lets become friends. Male enemies? Misunderstanding or not, I will have to brutally beat you or kill you. This gets irritating when I am here to enjoy a novel where enemies get rolled and cry tears of regret. But the females will be given a second chance even if they would have died if they were male.

i dont mind MC sparing females time to time. But every female he comes across has absolutely no malice and hatred in their heart against him. If they do, it was only for a little bit. Of course if the females are written like this then the MC has no reason to kill them. This problem lies with the author. He writes women as saints and men like villains. Typical simp behaviour. <<less

Although this novel has many faults, what struck me as deeply aggravating is the cultivation pace throughout the chapters.

From chapter 1 to 221, the MC advances three major realms. Then, from 222 to 697 he is stuck in the same bullsh*t generic one to nine major realm, that happens to be the threshold for solving many of his conflicts.

That's merely the tip of the iceberg. Do yourself a favor and skip everything Heavenly Silkworm Potato. There is not one novel of his that I've read and ended up no being... more>> monumental tr*sh. <<less

This Sucks, let me explain.

I liked battle throughout the heavens, especially the beginning and bits of The Middle, Martial Universe (I believe that's what its called) was also fairly decent.

This This is shit, the beginning of the story the first 10 or 15 chapters, are in fact fair n cool not a bad start pass that point, no.

The structure of power levels makes no sense, skills and abilities make no sense, he learns one move every once in awhile and just spams it in not cool ways... more>> in fact.

For example he'll get an ability. To learn the ability not maby have learned, not everyone has even scratch the surface (that's a whole chapterexplaining that) , the next chapter would be him trying to get whatever to learn the ability, the next chapter after that him failing to get that item or whatever, then the next chapter after that is him obtaining the item (yay),

then finally when he uses the move, withing a (cliche I must use it the normal level mid level then max of what I can actually do) in series of battles wows the crowd, he does this and almost every Arc he doesn't get a wide variety of abilities, he doesn't stick with the one ability from beginning, to the end and it's not really cooly explained, like the God Hand move or two fires creating a nuke nope he'll just get a new ability later.

Everyone looks down on this guy at every point in turn it gets painful to read.

Every good thing about him they probably just a 1 chapter later or so forget about it.

Without spoiling anything obviously this guy, needs a harem so all men bad, all women good.

And the authors other works he loves to give the main character, the ability to do a secondary thing, being a spiritualist or pill making or whatever, in this he can basically Wright runes and this gives him a tipping the scale in defeating other people, fun fact this is a spoiler he doesn't do it all the time, or really ever.

This story forgets it by the middle part with in the 300s, because the story is awful, his amazing ability can only come up when he needs to use it, then never again.

DONT READ IT, do something else with your time.

novel is rather decent but I would say it is lacking when compared to heavenly silk’s other works. In my opinion all of his characters with the exception of Xiao Yan are made from the same cloth. They all have identical personalities, from Mu Chen to Lin Dong to Zhou Yuan. For example if anyone wrongs them, the way they dish out their revenge is extremely similar. The way they treat women is extremely similar. Pretty much the character development stays constant throughout the novel. An MC who doesn’t offend... more>> anyone and only retaliates. Not a bad character but nothing we haven’t seen before.

For the story, one thing I dislike about heavenly silkworms novels are that his MC are always flanked by women and the women are the main cause of their problems. For example the women around him are the most talented of females and when compared to other females they eclipse them in strength and beauty and character. So in this regard I really don’t know why they surround this youngster who is supposedly born unlucky but has more luck than anyone in the novel.

the while dragon is stolen sh*t is nonsense. This guy is still extremely talented without it and it really only serves as a fuel to the plot. The promise the enemy king made not to step inside the kingdom is foolish. Look at it this way. If I made a promise to you that I won’t harm you at all I will naturally keep it. However if you came to my house to kill my family, am I going to say. “ Your lucky I can’t harm you because I made a promise and I don’t want people to know I’m a liar.” How foolish would that be, yes? That’s what King Wu does in this novel. His empire is threatened but because of some measly promise he refused to take action and only when he is dying he will say “if only I broke my promise and killed you earlier. I was far too arrogant.”

Romance, right now it’s looking abit like a harem. I don’t know how far he likes the Su girl but 100% this guy is in love with yaoyao. Why? Because if another man were to even talk to her he would get pissed off so he definitely is already smitten with her. Not saying she is bad or anything but the way they met was weak. Very weak. Imagine a child stumbles upon a dying old man and then practically gives away his daughter to this child who mind you is a cripple. Which person will entrust their daughters safety to a crippled child? Very weird logic.

Fights are amazing but are dominated by the peanut gallery who commentate as they spectate.

I like this novel for its world building, a very interesting world building that far exceeds the size of heavenly silkworms other novels. Who knows perhaps we may see MC from his other novels appear which I hope to be the case. Anyways I’d say it’s pretty much another the great ruler novel or Wu Dong novel. It is lacking when compared to btth but in all case it is a heavenly silk worm novel so expect what you normally expect from him <<less

I enjoy the political aspect. Yes, the MC is driven by his revenge to get his destiny back, but he is also driven to protect the kingdom (empire?) for his father, and the citizens, as a prince. SO FAR this is positive - because the MC cares, and the care affects his decisions and actions, you get a sense of the gravity and stakes. In a genre where stakes bow down in front of the MC's halo, it's a small, but nice, change. (It doesn't hurt that at this point... more>> the MC is still fairly weak, even with cheats).

HOWEVER:

Spoiler

The harem, boy, oh boy, the harem. Or potential harem as I should say. The female characters, even though they are strong (at this point, stronger than the MC) are written as moving eye candy. Never mind that the MC has a platonic friendship with them, the audience demands (?) so voluminous descriptions of their bodies, their curves, their (and this is a direct quote) "devastating feet" MUST be given.

a) they're 13. 13!

b) they are literally friends when he's not ogling them. I could somewhat forgive it if the characters had any genuine romantic feelings, but everyone (apart from the girl who's grandfather he helped save?) sees him as a friend (if that?).

Ugh.

[collapse]

As others have said, it's generic (what isn't?) and there's plot armour and cheats (who doesn't?) but it's still okay. It's decently written, the cultivation system makes sense (?) and there's the interesting dynamic of his destiny being "stolen". <<less

*update*

I've decided to drop this. I read ahead to get a spoiler for a really annoying development and didn't at all like where this is headed. (It wasn't resolved until over 800 chapters later)

****

... more>> I mostly agree with others that the FMC is the real protagonist. The MC is at times a weak, unlikable beta. (Especially when it comes to women)

However, he does kill or maim some enemies, so it's not like he's constantly unbearably spineless, he's just unable to deal with women well. An odd flaw for a crown prince who grew up with a beauty as a best friend. The FMC YaoYao is a blast though. Her personality, background and intellect are all fleshed out and entertaining. Nothing better than a powerful, intelligent & faithful woman IMO.

There is a little bit of world building so far, but not much character development. (Aside from "leveling up" that is)

The most colorful characters are the two female companions of the MC.

The villains all seem to have the same slimey behaviors, which are so far all dealt with in similarly predictable ways.

The politics in this world are a total mess. Political Power houses seem to make really silly decisions that make this story less enjoyable for me, even the MC, a prince, makes some massively s*upid decisions that no intelligent politician would ever make.

Spoiler

Letting extremely dangerous mass mu*derer free after an intense life or death battle. MC's condition is to serve him, but with two glaringly obvious loop holes that will allow said powerful criminal to go free. The author tries to make this decision look smart, but it's obviously not.

[collapse]

As long as you don't expect anything praiseworthy from the MC without assistance from either his companions or plot armor, it's an enjoyable enough read to pass the time if you don't have something amazing to read. I'd rate this story a little below average. <<less

It is basically, talk shit, face slap, go here, go there, gossip gossip gossip, talk shit, face slap. - Repeat- Recycle. Entertainment. But I am staying at 3 star. MANY CHAPTERS ARE COMPLETE - UTTER - POINTLESS. PEANUT GALLERY FILLERS

====================================================

Annoying writer. Anti-climatic ends to arcs. Lots of filler chapters (gossip chapters) Main character do something, everyone claps. Next day everyone talk sh*t about him and thinks he is not good enough. So main character do something amazing again, everyone claps. Next day everyone looks down on him again. Repeat -... more>> recycled - repeat - recycled. Story = 3/5

Translation: 4/5. A lot of grammar errors that persists through chapters. No one commenting on them. Editor/proof reader not fixing the errors. Sentence fragments or weird sentence structures sometimes and missing words, wrong words used or incorrect spelling of words. Characters = 3/5 The side characters feels more important than main character. Weird character building. Weird character progression. Names are generic. To me, This LN felt like below average amongst all the XianXia I have read.
The only reason I started reading this light novel is because I have been following Heavenly Silkworm Potato's work.

The main reasons that made this LN unappealing for me were:
-The FMC is "ice beauty". Ice beauties have no characters or character development and are easy for authors just write them as cold personality and don't need to invest much effort. And there are some female "Simps" that praise his every other breadth.
-Too... more>> many "peanut galleries". Every chapter there is some guy tr*sh talking the MC. For all we know, MC could be a literal god and random guy at the side of the street will be tr*sh talking Zhuo Yuan.
-The author gives random unacceptable upgrades to side characters. The MC goes through godly luck and difficulty to obtain godly upgrades and next chapter all his random friends somehow always manage to catchup to his cultivations.
And there are many more reasons that made this LN unlikable. The ending drama was rushed and very predictable as well. Over all I feel like this one definitely belongs among one of the least liked LN for me. <<less

Truly Regretful.

That's basically how I feel about this work. It's honestly a HUGE shame, because I generally love this author. WDQK is one of my favorites, with BTTH also up there, with TGR coming up behind but still pretty good. While I'll admit that they (BTTH especially) have issues, they're both of good quality, despite their generic-ness. This isn't a review of those two, so I'll be brief: all of the author's works so far have involved generic tropes and pretty standard cliches, but most important of all: they were... more>> done well. So TL;DR, Cliched and predictable, but done well. Those tropes wouldn't exist if they didn't provide some merit after all.

Not here though. It's like the author is an entirely other person, being ghostwritten under the name of heavenly silkworm potato. This take ALL the negative aspects of prior novels, and turns them up to 11. Did you enjoy how most Arrogant Young Masters were dealt with quickly, and there weren't even as many of them? Not here, they're even worse than normal. Enjoyed how the peanut gallery wasn't really there in his other novels? Nope, here they're everywhere. Enjoyed how bloat-free the writing was? This is bloated as MGA at its worst. Did you like how the MC wasn't really underestimated much, and frequently changed locations so he had no negative reputation? Not here! Here the MC, despite again and again being amazing, and have proven exploits to his name, is STILL written off as tr*sh. Expect every other character in the entire universe to despise him for... reasons?

I honestly do not know where this piece of tr*sh came from. It's a disgrace to be under the same name. The writing style is almost completely different. The only reason I don't actually think it's a ghostwritten work is that the MC is actually pretty similar to prior ones - calm, has a goal, hardworking, doesn't massacre people, isn't a DB, etc.

So yeah. I rated this as a 3/5 (whereas I'd put WDQK at a 5/5, not because it's perfect, but because FOR THE GENRE it is superior).

This is.. average. Painfully average. It's a crying shame. If it weren't for the MC being actually good for the genre, and webnovels in general, I would've dropped this long ago. Which is f***ing terrible, because the author's name should mean that I like this. This work is just as generically terrible as all the rest sub-par ones in the genre. It's a disgrace to the author. <<less

This is one of those novels that is generic, filled with cliches and lot of filler content, yet is refreshing and easy to read. While the plot isn't anywhere close to mind-blowing, it is quite decent. The writing style is easy to read.

It gets a little bit annoying when the male MC is thrown under the bus at every point in time, resulting in a lot of repetitive scenarios where everybody is like "Woah!" when the male MC pulls off something amazing. The general flow is quite repetitive, but the... more>> fights are varied and interesting.

Female MC is badass, even more so than the male MC.

A typical novel following a hero whose fate was stolen but overcame his hardships to stand at the pinnacle of the world.

He faced the enemies above his realm most of the time, so of course the fights would be brutal. I hope that there were less cliché statements that belittle, doubt, and emphasize too much about how weak the MC was; however, he won every single time because of his tenacity and perseverance.

Heavenly Silkworm Potato is a giant among xianxia authors. He wrote novels that became classics and literally defined the gold standard of the genre. His most popular trilogy (BTTH, WDQK and TGR) has been adapted to successful tv dramas. His ideas were original and deep, almost rivaling geniuses like ErGen (especially WDQK, even if there is still an insurmountable chasm, at some point it gets very near the celebrated xianxia master).
Unfortunately no one can be always at his best, and Heavenly Silkworm Potato makes no exception.... more>> Dragon Prince Yuan is a low point in his career, being a clear mashup of his previous novels and being written with no enthusiasm or care at all, probably motivated not by some new ideas he got but because the need to earn money.
