Occupational Analysis of “Crown Princess”:

Number One: Promotion prospects are bleak, Crown Princess—Empress—Empress Dowager, the time between each is vast, and difficulty is extremely high.

Number Two: No guarantees of continuous labor, not to mention the lack of insurance, you can be dismissed at any time, furthermore you will no longer be able to start another career!

Number Three: The nature of the job is dangerous, at any time there is the danger of death, if the Crown Prince isn’t able to ascend as emperor, you will fall out of luck together with him, if the crown prince ascends as emperor, you have to be careful as to not unluckily fall alone.

Number Four: Moonlighting as a s*x worker, though the intensity of the job is unlikely to be very big, however, there is no power to select the service partner.

To summarize, the job of Crown Princess isn’t particularly a good job, no prospects, large stress, and the manual labor is intense……

Okay, in fact that was just a flood of words, a simple summary is:

This is a story about a “woman’s” struggles in the harem……

At the same time, it is also about a “man’s” sufferings in the harem……

God I regret putting this one off. I watched Mr Queen and felt unhappy with the ending. They killed kim byeong in right after giving him a redemption arc (he was my fav character) and the beong hwan went back to the modern times. I hated the ending. So when I read the novel I was imagining those actors as the character. The ending was satisfying I really loved the shock at the last chapter. I really like the Lv Li character. She was so funny and lively and her... more>> hateful comments with her innocent personality was hilarious. I hated the ML at some points.

spoiler

when he tried to r*pe her and after promising her safety he tried to kill her. I felt really pityful for her when all 3 people tried to use her and kill her and even her family abandoned her.

Other than that while I hated him at points I liked his character development. I am really happy the lv li and Zhao whatever got their happy ending and again felt sad for the bathroom lord. Idk why maybe it was the actor or his character for yandere loving me but I always wanted a happy ending for him. He wasn't malicious but wanted what every prince wanted. And betrayal of the country was his last desperate attempt at winning.

You may see the comments about despicable ML but don't forgo the novel just because of him. Its nit just the ML this is an amazing funny novel with palace intrigue and fluff (a lil bit but its there). Hate the ML or don't hate him but this novel is worth his despicable behaviour in the few chapters. <<less

I kept decline to read this until now because some of the bad reviews and the thought this novel not to my laking.

Sure enough! My bad impression was slapped when I give this story a try. Well, this novel got adapted to drama for no reason, right? Even Kdrama Mr. Queen decided take this novel as reference.

After all, everyone has their own point of view, so judge it by yourself.

I am ambivalent about this book. It was an entertaining enough read with action, intrigue, and romance, but the pacing was erratic and details were sometimes confusing. There was surprisingly little bloodshed outside of the war, and I think an execution or two would’ve helped keep emotional tension high. It’s hard to keep that sense of danger when there really aren’t heavy consequences to taking dangerous actions.

The MC was written well and her change throughout the book is clear through her thoughts and behavior, but I found her to be... more>> unlikeable. Her perspective is flawed, colored by her general contempt for others
Spoiler

which interestingly enough is expressed through a lot of rigid gender expectations

[collapse]
, reliance on projection to “empathize, ” and her belief in her own intellectual abilities. She makes so many (wrong) assumptions based on rigid gender roles (all men are like this, all women like that) that her plotting tends to fall apart or backfire. While this does make her interesting as a flawed narrator, her inability to truly empathize is off putting.

As the MC is stuck in her egocentric view of reality, her interactions with other characters is very utilitarian. She thinks her decisions are logically sound (and sometimes they are), but her abysmally low EQ strips any advantage of logic away from her. Since she’s unable to let go of her cynicism and drop her guard, she doesn’t really connect with other characters other than her maids, which made it difficult for me to become invested in them. Why should I care about them if she can’t?

Even when clearly she has changed, she still clings so tightly to her assumptions and self-centered worldview that her growth as a character is frustrating to read. She may have changed, but she won’t admit it to herself and she hasn’t learned a thing.

In contrast, the ML who is painted quite unsympathetically in the MC’s perception, shows subtle growth throughout. Even though his negative reactions (storming off, threatening violence, avoidance) don’t improve, his positive behaviors do. Slowly, he lowers his guard and tries to connect with the MC, but it’s hard for him to be authentic with the MC when she refuses to see or allow it. While the ML is as flawed in he makes some wise observations about the MC and her true self. At one point near the end of the book, the ML asks the MC if she knows what integrity means and in my mind, she really does not.

Your mileage may vary. The author does a good job of showing character of MC and ML through their actions (versus just telling us), and there is subtlety in how she handles their growth. The plot and intrigue is exciting enough, but the flawed perception of the MC dampens this with her clunky observations and assumptions to the extent that I just didn’t enjoy or like her.

* I accidentally cl**ked 2 stars. I actually wanted to rate it 3 stars. <<less

This is such a good story that offers a unique experience to the readers as it is made with a different perspective of how men views the worlds when he become a woman. Nice flow of plot, storyline and we can see the development most of the characters. I really like how the novel come towards the end because we can see how much effort each characters have done to achieve their success in life with the love ones without hurting their consciences of how they views the world. Thanks... more>> to the author for writing this and also tq to the translators for choosing this novel and managed to translate it till the end. Recommended to all that want such a nice reading without any big conflicts that may make your blood boils ;) <<less

If you've already read and liked "To be a Virtuous Wife" you will probably also like this one as I found them pretty similar even considering the mostly different tags.

You have the all-powerful ML and the abandoned wife now a extremely pragmatic transmigrated person, the main difference I would say is that To be a Virtuous Wife is more angsty and focuses more on the drama and the struggle in the harem before switching focus on the relationship between the two leads meanwhile The Promotion Record of a Crown Princess... more>> is a kind of fluffy (?) gender bender palace drama (?) with a comedic undertone, it's really weird.

The story mostly focuses on the political drama, the emperor succession and the MC relation with the ML so it is not really a rom-com but it's not a political drama either, or at least not a good one.

112 chapters out 113 are written from the POV of the MC (limited contact with the outside world considering the time and gender) and you often find yourself reading about a political plotline with barely enough information to reach a conclusion, also, most of the information she gets is obtained from people with interests of their own, they have no reason to tell her the truth and she is the same considering she is fighting to survive. I feel like this deserves an unreliable narrator tag but maybe it's just me.

While the intrigue is going on the ML eventually falls in love with the MC and so he she has to struggle accepting the new identity as a female and stuff like that, pretty interesting overall and it leads to some funny situations, also both the MC and the ML are written very well.

A issue I have is that I found the MC to be too cold overall, even colder than the ML.
The two are enemies in a power struggle and the MC was used to being a male but he she never gave the ML a chance and that bummed me out a little considering the ML feelings for the MC were pretty clear after a certain point, even when the reason was explained I didn't really buy it, it was a little excessive imho.

Overall it's a solid read, it's also really funny at times but it's not really romantic (even the ending is pretty lackluster in that regard) so if romance is what you are looking for I won't recommend this.

Originally, I stumbled into reading this novel. I had no expectations so when the heroine's inner monologues began - I burst out laughing. Finally, a transmigrator who tells it like it is (or might be) and didn't settle complacently into life in the past.

The plot is that of a modern playboy who travels back in time - to find out he's now living the life of an unloved princess consort. Imagine the joys of discovering you were now living in a household of beautiful women - without the wherewithal to... more>> do anything about it. Or does he/she?

The author portrays the standard side characters in a palace novel - the concubines, the second leads, eunuchs, the other princes and a Dowager Empress - but gives them a sharply funny twist. I'm enjoying the plot so far and Our Hero-in-the-Heroine's-Body's proactive nature. He/She isn't going to just let things happen to him/her! Only, they never quite end up like he/she hopes... ha!

The humor is a bit bawdy but as many people are seeking it out because of the flirtatious drama version, Go Princess Go, I don't think that's a problem. Looking forward to seeing how it all turns out! <<less

First and foremost, LMAO! Omg that ending of chapter nine! Freaking hilarious! Anyways, down to business. I thoroughly enjoyed both translations of this novel. It drew me into the story deep enough that if there were any mistakes, I didn't really care about it. This novel is about a man who transmigrated into the body of an unloved consort princess in the middle of a love square, where she wasn't the one being fought for. Though inside the body of a woman, the MC still mantain his masculine thoughts and... more>> spends a great deal of his time checking out the beauties in the harem. As of yet there isn't enough chapters to really gauge the scope of the plot but so far for what is there I am thouroughly enjoying it and looking forward for more updates. Good job team. I feel a little mixed on this. At the beginning, I enjoyed the comic contrast of a modern man's takes coming out of a historical crown princess's mouth, but the takes are a little (a lot??) f*ckboy and the novel quickly turns serious (with some occasional comic interludes). I don't think this is really adds much in the way of commentary on gender identity or whatever - the MC gets over it without too much fuss. There's also a potentially triggering scene where the crown prince reacts badly to the... more>> idea that the MC was originally a man.

It's not bad as a court intrigue novel, and fun to see the MC actively plotting against their husband the crown prince (and more realistic than immediately trusting and relying on him!) However, the crown prince aaalways ends up with the upper hand, which is kind of boring, and some of the arcs could've been cut (usually the case with webnovels though).

The romance is, uh, I guess it sort of exists, but you'll be mostly disappointed if you read it for that. It's clear the crown prince does falls in love with the MC, but the MC honestly doesn't seem to feel much for him and is just resigned to the relationship for much of the novel - the MC continuously compares being the crown prince's wife as a job where you have to please your boss. The author does a great job of showing why the MC can never 100% fall in love even when the MC does develop some feelings - can you trust someone who has your life in their hands and will plot to kill or undermine you if necessary? Ultimately the crown prince does make a grand gesture at the very end that could redeem the romance aspect for some readers, and I can see how it would, but idk if I was totally convinced.

Translation was readable, but I did switch from reading it in Chinese to the English (because I wanted to get through it faster) and there is a certain low level of eliding happening where some of the analogies etc are being simplified. <<less

The webseries was better

I love the Chinese webseries Go Princess Go, it is fun and cute and made me laugh so much

This translation is not fun or clever or amusing, it is a LONG BORING palace intrigue where everyone stabs each other in the back over and over and over again

Instead of reading this, go watch the drama

My dear fellow readers, those of you came away from watching K-drama Mr Queen to be wowed by the novel, let me stop you right here. The drama's ending s**ked, but this novel is so TERRIBLE that for the first time in my life have I whelmingly felt the drama/movie adaptation was Better. Which is another first, as K-Drama writers are so unimaginative in the worst possible ways that it leaves one scared for human evolution. So fellow readers, if you were disappointed with the drama ending, dry your tears... more>> and be happy that for the first time in history of novel adaptions, K-drama writers got it right!!! And don't even touch this sad piece of writing with a ten-foot pole!

I've read better fanfics written by amateur, hormonal teenager writers!!! Even the cesspool of terribly writing, AKA, Wattpad has better stuff than this! And the translator - Flying Lines, what an apt pseudonym - makes this nauseatingly convoluted piece of writing even more abominable to a reader, let alone a well-read one!!

Not only is the reader loosing his/her mind over the convoluted plotting, which reeks of a terrible writer who was on deadline (even Aeroplane Bro would have been ashamed of this pile of dung, or maybe impressed! Who knows!) - we have to contend with the terrible translating skills of this Flying Lines person (admittedly they declared that it was their 1st time translating, so heed the warning people!!!!). He/She makes it even more confusing, a feat which is truly commendable!

By the time I reached ch 50 or so, I decided the ML was a lost cause and the only thing which kept me going was the convolutedness of the plot! The author comes across as a fantasy fulfilling hormonal teenage writer who simply can't decide which plotline to stick to and so, wrote out every bad writing cliché one chapter after another!!! And whosoever is exalting this novel as cutting edge take on gender identity, gender crises etc., etc., clearly has been reading a very different novel than I. Or, has very convoluted taste in reading material.

The MC has interesting reactions on being in a woman's body, nature and woman's thinking process, his jokes and "manly insights" on women can be funny but that's about it. There's no earth-shattering epiphanies about women's struggles, lives, and troubles nor is there any true empathy with being a woman. It's all just surface level observations which only come due to the inconveniences he faces as a woman - even the gender identity crises is brought about by the ML who just demands "Man or woman?" as if the gender determines his affections or attractions for MC. The whole this is so superficial that after the (real) struggle in lying that he was a woman previously, MC brushes it away after 2 chapters; happily popping a kid afterwards. One can look at it as a man trying to cope with gender identity in a light-hearted manner so as to not "break down", but if one is being brutally honest is's just sloppy writing.

The ML is tr*sh, who has the super power to see through each and any plot people around him come up with and has already plotted their downfall - basically a glorified schemer (because calling him chess master or strategist will be insult to both). And that's all I can say without wasting space on this terribly written character.

And thus, if you fellow reader, stuck till the end just to see if the convoluted plot untangles, "Bravo!" but my instinct as an avid reader tells me it won't even be satisfying! I'll sure the other reviews agree with me. <<less

This is very literally just a journey from Crown Princess to Empress Dowager. And lots of schemes along the way.

I wanted to read this for the Palace drama, but I never thought there might be such a thing as too much Palace drama! At no point does it end, and everyone is scheming against everyone. I was hoping for at least a few genuine relationships, but alas.

As far as side characters go, they were some of the best! Lu Li is extremely suited to living the palace life and does... more>> admirably in every role she is thrust into! Chu Wang and Zhao Wang are two pitiful brothers, but their relationship with the MC is also to be admired.

In the end, it's not that the story was too convoluted, but that it's convoluted without any satisfaction. Everything the MC plans for, the ML has already seen through. It's as if all his/her plans were for naught.

And that's another thing - the MC gets used to being in a female body in ancient times real quick! To the point that he/she has no issues with being pregnant 5 times and delivering kids!

All in all, well written and addicting, but not truly satisfying. I got the palace drama I wished for, but I got nothing along with it.

A very uncomfortable read.

I did not find it even 1% funny and felt like I'm reading a totally different book than others from the reviews.

ML has his reasons and...... is a justified scum.

MC is going through gender crisis.... so is carefree and spends time looking and salivating over other women.

The story might get better, how much 'better' depends, on your definition of better. However its not my cup of tea.

I'm still in the early chapters and I don't want to think more of it but he said this to the women in his inner monologue

"You all don't have anything in your heads a! Did you never learn that a man's inner qualities should be greater than his looks!"

Meanwhile he was thinking about breasts and stuff like that all day. I know it's supposed to be taken in a funny way so that's why I'll try not to be bothered that much.

The story totally good!!! The MC really awesome and hillarius!.

Inthe beginning story, we will find the ML totally jerk, (couse its based on view from mc). But don't worry, ML only sleep with the MC, never with any other woman, and also, they are very sweet together, I only can say, the ML very loyal, even though, he a jerk sometimes, but everything he do, have a reason on it.

The MC, she really great, funny, smart, and amazing as well, he not fall for ML straight away, I just... more>> can say, its very realistic.. But, also can be make us depresed too,.. sigh, the politics between them, totally make us feel upside-down, to heavy!.. but then, the ending, totally sweet, they are together more than 20 years, and ML only have MC become his Empress, till the end, with all their children (T-T)... How sweet, recomendid to someone who want read heavy plot abaut politic, sceme, with loyal strong couple inside,... <<less

I see all these commenters commenting about how it's so different from the drama adaptation Go Princess Go and Mr Queen, and all I have to say is WTF? Like why are you even comparing the drama with the novel? It's irrelevant here. And speaking from someone who has watched Mr Queen, it's nothing like Mr Queen AT ALL (and Mr Queen's ending made no sense like why would the king stay in love with the queen when there's someone else who has replace the person he fell in love... more>> with) ! So I was a little bit confused when people compare to it not knowing that it was an adaptation. I totally understand if y'all wanna 'deter' anyone who came in expecting something similar to the drama, but hopefully y'all aren't hating on it because it's not the same as the drama, but hating on it if the novel just genuinely suck

But speaking from a your normal reader point of view, I would say that this novel wasn't really my cup of tea. It wasn't an enjoyable read for me. I actually found it okayly translated and that it was okay really written, but I found it a little bit confusing and that the romance wasn't very good. As someone a little bit dumb, I found that the palace scheming and drama had a wee bit too many innuendos that I couldn't figure out myself and that the author did not decipher for me. So I was left wondering about the hints dropped. Besides, I found the palace scheming and plot not all that interesting? The plot on the female leads and was a lot about survival but because it wasn't really explain all that well, it didn't turn out right? I mean I get that your end goal is to be empress Dowager but it was really put very nicely? And on the male lead's end, all you know is that he is the ultimate schemer and winner that's all. The only time that the part was explain really well was when the ML, FL and Bathroom guy aka 9th Prince were talking it out by the river. Anyways the plot low-key s**ked because there wasn't really one TBH.

There are quite a few interesting characters in the novel but I felt that their place in the story were completely redundant. They were there to move some of the plot along but they're mostly there just for some 'comedic relief'. I see that the author was trying to make the story hilarious, but it was just more of a smile kinda a moment for me. Half the time I know that the author was trying to be funny and sometimes it's ok but other times, ERM... maybe it got lost In translation.

The romance... honestly had so much potential to be an angsty happy ending romance, but... It really wasn't well developed. There was no angst, and half the time it was just really not romance. The female lead was overly suspicious of the male lead and the male lead was just using the female lead, both of which is justifiable but come on, where is the romance? There was no drastic turning point where both of them fell in love. I guess it was gradual and it was kind of sweet but as a God view, third person reader in the story, half the time I can't even tell whether the female lead and a male lead are genuinely acting out of love or scheming against each other, which made it feel like the romance was not developed at all. There are no second male leads only guys who are side characters and 'allies'. It was a I-use-you-you-use- me-and-we-double-cross-each-other- because-let's-face-it-we-don't-trust-no-one situation.

But I did enjoy the ending though. It was a happy ending that I like ie with tons of kids and follow up with crybaby maid and her husband. It was very closurey so I feel at peace after finishing it and am not bashing the novel hahahaha.

So yeah, if you want to give it a go I guess you can but personally I found it not all that much enjoyable and I honestly don't know why it was adapted to a drama (s), maybe because it was a guy entering a female's body take which was refreshing but it is not justified. Luckily, it was only slightly over 100 chapters otherwise I would have dropped the novel. Recommended if you like 'comedic relief' in your palace scheming novel, interesting side characters who get very interesting and memorable labels, want a first person POV (which you don't often get from CN novels) and an interesting female lead with an interesting way of thought (who till now I don't feel love her children because honestly it's from first person point of view and there was no mention whatsoever of her distress or love or concerns for her children (or her talking in depth about her children) except for the 'genuinely sincere tears' she shed after they were apart for awhile). <<less

Genuinely funny. Don't compare it to either of the drama adaptations, it's not the same story. The MC is smart and capable, the ML is pragmatic and scheming. There's a lot going on between the lines. Especially the maid is such a great character - a complete crybaby, yet scheming and devious at the same time. Romance is understated and the main focus is palace schemes.

The extra were the ML made me wish we had gotten more of his perspective. He was so funny - cold and scheming on the... more>> outside, yet cursing and throwing shade during his internal monologue. <<less
