I like it so far, its way better than most and the writing is at a pretty good level. There is depth to every character and action and, thus, immersion is easy. I wish radiant wasn't the one translating as they have been quite Eccentric lately and started become worth of of bad rep. Besides that, enjoy the ride.

Amazing story, but I am a bit annoyed by some of the reviewers saying something like ‘oh it doesn’t sound like it comes from a chinese author, more like from a Japanese or Korean author or something’

Like, I get it, there are a shat ton of Chinese novels with badly written plotlines, zero logic, 2D characters, etc etc, but the fact that you’ve linked that sort of writing to Chinese authors as a whole and you’re claiming that good writing doesn’t sound ‘Chinese’ is incredibly rude and patronising.

Keep in mind... more>> that those are Lighy novels. The very fact that you can find extremely poorly written ripoffs of the incredibly entertaining ‘Cultivation chat griup’ is sorta proof that anyone can post their works and get it translated onto here. You wouldn’t find Obama writing on FanFiction. Net or AO3. You wouldn’t find TS Eliot on wattpad. You wouldn’t find Murakami on Novel updates. Just because you’ve read a few shitty ones filled with ‘face-slapping’ or instant gratification scenes by Chinese authors on this site doesn’t mean that Chinese authors use that style of writing normally. You’ll find the same occurring with Japanese and Korean authors - it’s not like all of their novels are of guaranteed quality and content (not to say that there aren’t amazing ones).

It’s like looking at all those werewolf stories on wattpad written by preteens about anatomically impossible ‘intimate’ scenes and soul mates who emotionally abuse each other, and generalising that to the entirety of all werewolf novels? And when you do find a good one you say something like ‘oh it’s in a werewolf setting but like it’s like a mystery-genre novelist wrote it’ or something. It’s really pretentious, and in my opinion degrades both Chinese light novels, Xianxia in particular, as a genre and also the author’s own effort in making such a story.

This novel does not know what it wants to be.

The author attempts to create a vast, rich fantasy world through irrelevant and pointless details and unplanned plot. This novel believes itself more sophisticated than it actually is.

Firstly, the writing quality is poor. Writing paragraphs of pointless exposition does not make you a good writer; it makes you a wannabe Tolkien. You aren't Tolkien. Stop trying to be him. Stop writing words just to write words.

I am perfectly fine with long form fantasy novels; hell, my favorite fantasy books are thousands... more>> of pages long. Wheel of Time has a ridiculous amount of exposition, but that serves a purpose. Here, it's mostly fluff.

This novel is trying to join the "Sanderson/Tolkien/Kay/Le Guin" club of quality fantasy writing while also trying to maintain the form of a standard Chinese webnovel. It does NOT go well.

All of these "5 star, 4 star" reviews speak to the readers' ignorance of quality writing more than it speaks to the actual caliber of this story's writing.

Just because you see big words and long sentences and lots of exposition does NOT mean this story is good. It's a mediocre attempt at great writing at best and a half-baked sketch of the author's overinflated ego at worst.

Secondly, the plot makes no sense. The author got so caught up in creating worldbuilding details that he didn't stop to think of one event would logically lead to the next. Sidequests pop up sloppily and pointlessly, and this author could build a firearms empire to rival the Winchesters' with all of the Chekhov's Guns he has lying around.

Don't waste your time. <<less

A very unique novel indeed. In a single sentence, the best way I could describe it would be an Avengers-style combination of numerous Christian, Middle-East, and Egyptian mythologies set up using Cultivation mechanics.

From the very beginning, the MC's goal is to understand what being a God truly means and he's pretty clearly on the road to becoming one himself. However, rather than slaughtering his way up, he takes a more Buddhist view of things and views his epic journey (using the original meaning of epic) as a tempering of his... more>> soul. He helps both friends and strangers with their own cultivation, and they clearly start becoming his Apostles along the way as he shares his understanding of both the incredible powers he teaches them and the often terrifying world around them. The MC is very relatable, empathic, and kind while not being a pushover which I view as one of the major strengths of this novel. The side characters are quite distinct and often flow out the story then come back in later, though some of their names can be a bit too obvious about their current and future roles in the story. The romance can be surprisingly sweet as well, though it's fairly basic so far.

The world building could be both a weakness or a strength, depending on the reader. While I don't think any religions or myths are treated particularly badly, they've clearly been heavily edited to fit into this world, which is mostly set in Syria, Egypt, and Iraq along the Mediterranean Coast. This could be a serious irritant to people who know and understand them very well, but as a layman who knows only the basics about the source materials, I find it a fun romp as characters from different tales interact. However, this story does get take a while to get going as there is a lot of worldbuilding to set-up and I sometimes feel the cultivation system feels a tiny bit out of place among famous names from non-eastern myths. Still, I got used to it quickly enough and it didn't bother me after a while.

Overall, I think this is an excellent novel for those who are willing to accept a different interpretation of ancient myths and religions and enjoys some of the softer wuxia style stories. <<less

Interesting take on xianxia inspired by Meopotamian and ancient Egyptian legends. It's pretty well understood that the use of an alternative setting tells you less about that culture and more about the author themselves. Science fiction isn't about the future, it's about the present. Badly written medieval fantasies written by Chinese authors still focus inordinately on face and filial piety. If used poorly it makes the result ridiculous, if used well and with understanding it allows for old ideas to be expressed in new and interesting ways. This series is... more>> one of the latter. The same webnovel tropes you see in Douluo Dalu or Ze Tian Ji are redone here, but the flaws are less apparent because you are distracted by the novelty of the setting. For example, the reinterpretation of Ishtar's descent into the underworld is particularly good. You get the funny reactions of the overpowered "clueless" protagonist of Tales of Herding Gods, juxtaposed with the ritual removal of Ishtar's mes along the gates. <<less

If you are ever wondering why this novel gets low ratings despite apparently every review praising it.

It's because you will get hit with a huge info dump in the first few chapters, getting introduced to a lot of ancient civilizations all at the same time. Egypt, Babylon, Assyria. Not only that but Aristotle himself makes an cameo.

It reads so dry, that its extremely painful for the average person.

... more>> For anyone to read past chapter 1.

They'd have to be able to read the most boring technical type of writing possible or be such a history nerd that they are used to reading those bland books you get in school.

This is a huge pass. <<less

You really can't trust the rating system of this site.

So far all I've felt from this novel is that it's extremely long-winded and straight up boring.

Paragraph after paragraph of endless exposition and dialogue. Conflicts are extremely short-lived while being far and in between. The fantasy elements such as magic and martial arts seem extremely basic with not much in the way of intricasies or inspiration. Seems lile a system where Higher level mages use stronger magic and higher level worriors contain greater strength. Author seems to be more focussed on... more>> introducing and developping more characters and world building than creating interesting scenarios or developping the plot in a way that grabs the readers' interests. Of course character development and world building is important but what's the point if that's all your novel has to offer? Plus the world building is pretty bland imo.

Of course, maybe things change later on but first impressions are also important and after already reading 25 chapters that felt like a waste of time, I've already lost too much interest to keep reading. <<less

This story is amazing if you take it as is and read for the story telling

The world setting is in the ancient Mesopotamia including ancient israel (at least so it seems) although the story is a cultivation story it has many Mesopotamian legends and stories of the Gods incorporated into the novel (although some are changed a bit to fit the story) so overall it can really enrich your knowledge of these stories especially if you do some research as the story progresses and I say that as a Jewish... more>> person who had Bible lessons and learned the stories of the surrounding area as well

Overall a great read just two drawback- the chapters are really long so you really need to immerse your minds in the story and it might feel like blasphemy to the overly religious Christian Jew or muslim <<less

So far so good. I like the theme of this novel, especially the fact that it's based on a culture that we don't often see in such novels. Definitely an interesting read so far.

Only complaint I have against this novel is that the MC is an utter moron. He's usually smart and careful but put a beautiful girl in front of him and he turns into a bumbling buffoon. He's clearly a repressed horndog, who thinks with his lower half rather than his head. Even the dumbest of the dumbest... more>> could probably figure out that the other party isn't upto any good, but dear MC-kun keeps drawing his own convenient interpretations and doesn't mind the troubles he keeps falling into. Those parts are extremely frustrating to say the least. <<less

The novel is not as good as others say.

The cultivation is generic contrary to what some say, you can find the same cultivation in any xianxia.

The characters are rarely original which is a disapointment and kind of lazy since the author only uses names from religions and mythology (with names like Socrates mixid in), thanks to this I can't really like them as this makes me want to read the much better books about the myth and epics instead of this.

This isn't the worst novel but it's not special in... more>> any way.

So I dropped this novel after I realised the tags are all wrong. There is no early romance and to be honest, no romance at all. Also it is missing the tragedy tag but the biggest flaw is this is NOT a xuanhuan. It's an eastern take on the bible.

To be a xuanhuan you need wuxia and xianxia elements, there are none of these. It's all about ancient time gods (Egyptian, Greek etc) and the rise of God (... more>>
Spoiler

you can understand why I said the first few lines about romance - think, does God have a wife?

) and biblical stories related to him reimagined by the author and then throw in a basic combat/magic system.

Translations are solid and the chapters are meaty (2-4k words) but I'm not sure why it scores so highly (4.2+ rating) when it doesn't have any stand out features, is a slow read and a difficult/ sad read a lot like Pursuit of Truth but without the quality characters and story telling.

2/10 read, simply because the 4.2 rating it has is way too high. <<less

Interesting at the beginning, quick paced after first 10 chapters. Cultivation system is also quite different and sometimes confusing. Simple but tragic love story. A lot of questions about Gods in the beginning. There's some actual philosophy mixed in between. But many arcs are boring and unimportant. They can be completely skipped without any problem.

I don't like how they're trying to connect a bunch of bible references. Really takes me out of the story whenever I try to connect the dots with the bible to figure out what might happen next. I don't think I can keep reading partially because of that. There's also a lot of side stories about characters when I mostly want to find out what's happening with Amon.

Very tormenting to read, just can't take it anymore. I feel like I'm gonna run out of brain cells if I force myself to continue to read. The story is like a straight line from start to finish. MC is very plain, not OP, but at least you could've made the MC a bit smarter, but nope.

My overall impression of this is good, for the first hundred chapter. It has pretty much everything I hope to be inside an adventure. I like the mc's moral of doing the things he thought as the right way. But when I arrived at when I stopped, things just doesn't get through me anymore. So many holes.

The MC just progress very fast in his power so fast that the premise that MC always saying "this path is going to be harder than the other paths" as nothing more than empty... more>> words. Even the ones he taught, everyone able to reach a level where you can say a success of high caliber in magic and swordsmanship within a year or two. If everyone he taught able to raise as fast as him then is he actually genius or not?

The way to power up in this novel is unique but also it's biggest down for me. From what I saw, every disciplined warriors and mages can become gods. Yes, gods. So even the peak of mortal should be reached just by being disciplined and patient. If you can't advance then you just need a bit of tips from some master than poof, your power will rise up without even the need to practice. In other novels people would cultivate with amassing qi, opening meridians, condensing inner core, and long decades meditation. Or keep practicing martial arts, challenging the body's endurance, creating techniques, and always having to fight till one's very limit. Or meditating to increase mana and spirit, doing research, crafting things, and needing specific resources in order to power up, but none here. You just need to be disciplined, rather smart, and know what you're doing then you'd have the chance to be the peak of mankind. Seriously, with how the story describe how to power up, quite a lot of normal hunters, farmers, and craftsman should be able to become 9th level peak of mankind. Or at least advanced. If you were to put those dedicated martial artist in other novels into this novel's world, they'd be supreme warriors. All of them. With chance of becoming a god.

The story skip the entire process of learning. There's no gruelling moments of learning techniques or cramming knowledge or any magic practicing, all he learned would be instantly deciphered and applied. He doesn't even need repetition to makes his technique perfect. Well, maybe there is but it doesn't got stressed at all. The MC has specs so high he can instantly learn and perfectly master things after saying a few words like 'in a few days of practicing Amon already mastered this or that.
And understand things like advanced spells in single go. Is this the MC super amazing genius or the world build made it that mage's spell so easy to learn?

This is the first time I actually feel a MC actually very plain. The story makes him out like that. As the story seems to view in order for one to be stronger one shouldn't have mental problems. That took most of the best in struggle of mind out of the story. The MC always pure and has smooth sailing in his cultivation.

Why the heck everyone the MC taught regard him as god when god is very real and their presence can be felt? People's faith should be much stronger than what the story made it to be. And yet here MC able to make others call him a god by their own volition just by teaching some cultivation method. Then all the wizards sorcerers magician should be all gods in ordinary people eyes, even warriors. If they just slightly teach them, then behold he be a god, kneel.

Spoiler

Funny thing is that I never see any sorcerer other than the MC in the time he is adventuring. Isn't it completely logical to run into one or two of such people, or an underworld organization of them perhaps? MC only find former sorcerers not real sorcerer themselves. It's as if the MC is the only stray wizard in the outside world. How come you can't find any when people would call you a god when you just show them a bit magic tricks?

There was a part when the story says the MC is master at sword. What the hell the MC knew about sword when he use only staff for the whole duration he practice any martial arts. And it's only for short 4 years he practiced martial arts. Yet he saying things about sword as if he's the real master of it. The author just want to make the MC capable of everything and skip the process.

How the heck the people of MC hometown suddenly became the best craftsmen in the world. It is explicitly said they're miners and only some are craftsmen. There's no particular mention of this too when the story was focusing at Duc. As if suddenly the rural, plain, desolate, isolated town of Duc suddenly become the center of the world's hidden masters when the author add they're the best craftsmen in the continent.

Just to make sure everyone's clear about this: This is my review based on the first 33 chapters, I don't know the entire story.

I'll be frank here, after seeing all the glowing reviews for this story, I assumed it'd be something truly amazing, not even them saying that it had a slow start, got me worried about its potential.

After reading 33 chapters of it however, I cannot for the life of me say that it's anything all that special, it's not bad, just average. The setting of the story, while... more>> fairly unique, is also entirely not taken advantage of, if you dear reader like stories such as Against The Gods, Battle Through the Heavens and similar, then this story's propably for you, if however you're into stories with a varied cast of interresting and deep characters, then this is not for you.

The characters are quite simple, and relationships get formed in no time at all, yet they act as though they've been friends for years. The main character feels indebted and is unable to hate an individual, even after said individual does something to him that'd make most people hate the person quite a lot.

The cultivation in the novel isn't really all that exciting either, there's some special stones you have to use, but they might as well be spirit / elemental stones from other novels, there's no effective difference, only the name. Also the early levels progress at blistering pace, which is personally why I for the life of me, cannot see how this story is allegedly slow, in my mind it's actually at a fairly average pace for a chinese Xianxia inspired web novel.

The action isn't all that great either, it gets the job done, but nothing more.

Worst of all though, is how a plot goal is set, yet repeatedly achieved in a way too fast period of time, a plotline needs some amount of time for it, to not just be irrelevant, but it's like the author can't decide to stick to a plotline, instead of immediately getting rid of it, as fast as possible.

As for other aspects, well the romance is bland, and the story just in essence breaks no new ground anywhere, nor does it do a particularly good job with what's already out there. So in closing, it's an average story, if that sounds like just the kind of thing you're personally looking for dear reader, then this is for you, if not, then you should just pass on it, and find something that's deeper and more interresting. <<less

  • The battles are so boring The MC can't even beat enemy's lackeys who are 4 realm lower than his and have to resort to sneak attack and also using tricks to defeat enemy's weaker than him.
  • The romance was so forced and the MC is always being simp when it come with maria. I like artemy and mourin more than her tbh, she claimed she love him as much as he does but it's really hard to believe it. She chosed su*cide even though she knew that it will hurt the MC so bad just because she is so devoted to a goddess she never even met.
  • I like humble MC but he's humbleness is too much even if his pride can take to kneel to other kings, emperors and god's statues I wish he will atleast think about his subordinates who seeing him doing those things with someone weaker than them.

It was pretty decent but nothing too great. The biggest downsides:

  1. Pages of description. The writing style is very boring. Especially the first 2 chapters are just pure pain to read.
  2. Good old genius MC. His cultivation progress speed is extremly high without any reason except that he trains daily.
  3. The stories themselves hardly have anything to do with his cultivation progress. He is just following his goals (more like that of others) but his stories don't feel rewarding at all.
Overall the novel is missing some things to become truly great.

The story was going great till Amon met that goddess (?) disguised as a s*ave Shepard but was actually the daughter of the King. Then all things fell apart, the reason the crazy old man committed su*cide to find about the secrets of the god became incredibly s*upid. The author started having the Gods roaming all around. There was a random drama with a followers' family. MC became dumb af when it came to that princess who had a fiance who was actually the strongest person in the whole continent. All things fell apart in just the first 40 chapters. Fk this unreasonable bullshit.

Also, the 'secret' of the gods seemed to be practicing both body and magic arts simultaneously, wow such rocket science. Dumb shit
