Hate, absolutely hate the MC! He's unbelievably s*upid, cowardly and selfish person. Can't agree with a MC who has zero sense of responsibility towards his parents - he asks his parents to pay money for him to get married etc as it is their responsibility, but then turns around and asks them to pay him the money he lend to pay off some loans!! He's such a whiny character - someone who cries why he didn't get diamond if he gets gold, irrespective of whether others around get silver only...... more>> Very very poor of character MC! His stats go up permanently by 2 (minimum) everytime he makes some nice equipment, yet he whines/envies/hates someone who gets only 2 plus on his stats!

The female characters are crazy, b*tchy, thoughtless, narcissist to the point it's unbelievable - oh, he didn't go crazy for me when I am this pretty, he must be gay!! OR he didn't agree with me when I asked this cutely, he's a bad person!! Really!??

Half the chapters contain same repeated information, yay for the word count! The levels/experience etc make no sense! Poorly written story with the NPCs having more sense/depth than the other characters! <<less

Decent at first but gets too predictable.

Unlike others, I found the first 100 chapters fine. On the contrary, I found that the more you read this novel the more boring it gets as it slowly devolves into Grid just being OP and barely winning his fights and the same thing repeating over and over again. Fights usually go like this:

Skill A! Skill B! Skill A B! Lose HP! Almost die! Kill enemy! Yay!

In general, it's the same thing with a different boss and because it's all virtual with no real... more>> risk, there's no tension at all. Furthermore, people seem to excuse the resurfacing of Grid's bad personality as Grid slowly "developing" but it sort of just feels inconsistent to me.

Even character interactions get boring af since it's just the same couple characters flirting with MC and no real development between character relationships once MC stops being a loser chara.

You can only fall back to the same tricks before the reader gets bored. The novel at this point begins to feel predictable for me so I'm dropping but I may come back to it some day. There's actually a fun farmer arc which was the best part of the novel imo (at least 4/5), but aside from that arc, everything else is about a 3/5.

Overall, you can give it a shot but I wouldn't expect much from this story. <<less

Don't read this novel with hopes that you'll like it very much.

Spoiler

Why no star:

    1. Character growth? More like character growing for a few seconds so as to make funny shor story ever VERY once in a while, in a very very many once in a while. Other than that, he goes back to turn s*upid for the sake of -as I said- funny time.
    1. Is this really a game? No, I'm not talkng like some plot twist where -boom- is actually another world, IS WAY MORE UGLY, it really doesn't resemble a game at all, in anything but, the fact that there are a system, levels, skills gear and deatg penalty... does that make a game? No. It's just an excuse so it doesn't have to do a isekai where he can get in or out whenever he wants. It feels like the only reason as to make the novel with vrmmo system is because -'it looks cool dude, ye'-. There is a plot hole where in the vampire city, 2 side character lvl up 1 lvl at 300, which is when lvling is the hardest compared to previous levels, but then he goes there as well and it creates a commotion.
    1. There is a system but at the same time... there isn't *ta-daaa~*. In Shura's Wrath, every time something big happened was being announced; like, first one to defeat a boss of rate -x-, first one to obtain an item grade -x-, first one to obtain a pet, etc. Here, there is only when the writing wants to. There is when first hidden second class, and that's it. Then for big events there is when the capital of the kingdom was being assaulted heavily, selecting the new pope, the yatan's church advancement, when mc's guild was trying to rebel and that's it. Almost 700 chapters and less than 7 events occurred...
    1. And just when it happens to be entertaining and gather suspense... like an 80-yo old man, the blacksmithing is so plain and boring that I skimmed after a couple of them: "Grid was hammering beautifully because it was beautifully", "Grid was sweating -skill that makes you sweat no more activates-, grid continued". Waw, so incredible, isn't it? 700 chapters, again...
    1. Oh yea, we'll talk about MC again, so after 400 chapters he is supposed to be even better except than other legends in "control" with his swordsmanship... just to randomly be mentioned that he couldn't fight with his sword only in the middle of every battle (just like every single battle before 400's) and proceeds to use skills that take time in activate (several of them) in 1-2 seconds... and then he performs 2 or 3 in a final battle against the best player of 2 billion people. And then he suddenly has none but can still fight toe to toe the rest 3-4 seconds... (????) and finally, he losts because his biggest hidden skill (become the legendary magician for 3 minutes) decided to talk instead of do something... AYAYAYYYY. And then, to end with bs'ing the MC; at chapter 631 he becomes a pu*sy and licks boot to say something that is meaningless to a enemy for the strongest enemy in the empire... aight then, no more spirit to continue with the facade of a good novel.
    1. Beautiful women? More like s*xual objects that long for mc's fingers... ah, the author, ah... so all women are worthless, there is literally a lot, a lot, like, lots, of mention of women; and they all be trophies for the novel to show like strippers all around. And after almost 600 chapters, one of them goes to a super raid boss, turns off the super debuff... for a few paragraphs and later on she ain't sh*t, she isn't even mentioned the next 30 or so chapters HAHA. And then there is the npc that the MC marries and has a child with... that's it, thanks for reading the sixth point.
    1. The items are literally garbage, the stats are meh, the only give strength -nothing else, that'll be a blashpemy- and those are the super item made by the so-called legendary blacksmith. Later on, he creates, and creates, and creates, and creates a weapon after another... so all of it is worthless. The slogan is supposed to be "Overgeared, te power of items!" but it's, the one and dozen legendary worthless and nonsensical weapons of Grid.
    1. Oh yea, the best part. At first PS (author) tries to hide it, kinda well. But after a few hundred chapters or so, he show his real intent. Pure nationalism, yea sure he get people from china, unitated states, russia and japan to put an example of extreme nationalism, in his novel russian call koreans yellow monkeys, japan call one of them korean for helping MC. So what about korea nationalism? Well it's obviously -and shamelessly- hided in all those chinese, russian, and japan and way more others' people being so damn shitty where more than 2 billion people play at as if they don't think about representing their countries, as if they have no brains... ah... this damn PS. And then the korean one is just a harmless little f*g that "DO YOU KNOW GRID?" and that's it, oh but when it comes to something "serious" he defends an island that is suposed to be an island that resembles an island form -an island- japan th- an island-at was
japanes-a damn f*cking island-e and they fight at a nasty ambush from japanese, then they fight it for deviating enemy forces of the in-game kingdom and finally have a tragic end... S.O. Mea. Nin. Gl. Ess. Ah... it really has no strong points.

Why 1 star:

    • Is readable for kids, yes, kids. The writing is too simple, plain, and 'comfy' i'd say. It has no suspense nor immersive emotions around the novel except for when he is with Irene having happy (not omitted parts) touchy moments, as well as with his son. But that is all, it really has no solid sto- anything, because at the next moment it goes back -very absurdly- to hahaa jokes, and 'oh, dude, you!' moments. So lame that is just comfortable and for little kids, because at the end, everything goes to a funny ending, heehee~.
    • Is so easy to read that is actually refreshing, it feels like you can avoid some stress for a few hours (in my case) by doing so, very comfy as i've said.
    • As long as you don't care about coherency, you'll glady be happy reading this bs.

currently at chapter 1104 - and still going...

for the previous readers and reviewers that halted because of the MC's mentality;

--- I indulge you lot to READ further. Don't stop after reading less than 100+ or so chapters, and then give up and rate the book so low. Give it a go!

... more>> for those new to the book;

--- Don't be affected by the negative reviews and avoid this. Read through and persist, it get's interesting. If the book is not to your taste by 300+ chapter or so, then it's your move.

the author seem to use "TIMELINE" as a basis for maneuvering through the plots, introducing immediate change while limiting the sudden 'how the hell did that happen' or 'why is he/she that strong'. The story favors "BALANCE", like it's a major part of the system - godlike even - to introduce sudden 'events' or 'quests' for counter balancing the OPness of the character (s) and not just the MC...

personally, I favor creation-type story lines; alchemy, blacksmith, formations, crafting and so on... this nearly piqued my interest genre, and hope that the author put some thoughts on the character growth for various individual classes.

Spoiler

with the introduction of different species available as a class change, @chapters 1000+, the complexity of the story get's interesting. I just hope the author doesn't overdo the power system, even with the persisting timeline.

Long story short:

MCs great development, which is what this novel is praised for, is horrible. He goes from the tr*shiest need (lives with parents, is so sh*t at game that he can't kill beginner monsters which old men and children could do, his sister views his existence as a disgrace, he is constantly jealous and unwilling to work for things) to an as*hole (he tends to be sh*t towards most people. Emphasis on people, because real world people are rarely respected while he never disrespect NPC).

He becomes a kind, marries... more>> his NPC wife, he fricks super good because DEX translates to making people fall over in pleasure by brushing against them (in real world too. Someone bumped into him and wet herself. He didn't move or touch, she just felt good on contact because why the f*ck not?), he becomes the strongest player by virtue of having tiems that make skill useless, and so much more.

First of all, plot armor is so f*cking strong that it crushes the genre of the novel, making it a full on comedy eventually. He got the quest for his new class because of some bull exploit that depends on him dying and respawning in the beginner city over and over. He finds the objective of his quest despite not being half the level needed for the quest on pure accident (literally falls in a hole while running from a monster), and from then on the running gag is how he causes misunderstandings that make people fear, respect and have a crush on him. Try to imagine that, 900 chapters where 90% of major developments rely on misunderstandings, random chance abilities (can completely ignore damage based on a chance that is literally less likely than winning a lottery), and people doing everything that isn't hammering metal or punching things to death (politics, economy, providing food for your subjects in a reliable manner? That's not something the emperor has to do at all!)

Not once throughout this novel did I feel that Grid was being smart with what he was doing. I could do everything he did better, and that is the worst offense I can say.

Grid neglects the main stat of his class (DEX) despite it deciding how good the items he crafts are. This could be reasonable, he needs power to kill monsters and level up, if he couldn't gain stats by making good items. If he used his ability to make a blueprint, and made a quick and easy to make itme, and mass produced them with enough care to get a rare rating, he could have stats higher to his current stats (gained over years) in a few months, being ahead of literally every other person in the game except the top NPCs. <<less

If the plot weren’t interesting then I would give the novel one star.

The writing, humor, characters, and interactions are all poorly written and have an annoying reliance on schadenfreude. The game that the story takes place in is incredibly poorly designed and many parts are inconsistent.

This is my first review on novelupdates, even though I have been on it for around 2-3 years (i don't really remember or care). All I have to say is, this novel is amazing, mind-blowing. It is my favorite novel, and its quality keeps on increasing with each passing chapter. There are probably a lot of people talking about how the MC, Grid is s*upid and unlikeable, and I agree, at least at the beginning. The novel starts getting better starting from chapter 80, and it only goes up from... more>> there. People say that the MC doesn't get better, and he is still greedy, but they fail to realize that improving your personality is a process and doesn't happen overnight. Just because his character gets better at chapter 80, doesn't mean he is a good person yet, he experiences growth from then onwards, even now at chapter 1048, he still experiences growth. He goes from a s*upid, greedy, self-interested person to someone who cares about others and puts their needs above his.

I just read chapter 1048, and I have to say it is my favorite chapter out of any novel I have read. All the growth he has the experience, everything he has accumulated, led up to this chapter (not entirely, but you have to read the chapter to understand what I'm saying). In this chapter, he finally sets foot on his own path (deviating from the class he inherited), and the entire world was there to watch him do so. I read the chapter so fast, I didn't realize I was done, and there were moments in the chapter that gave me chills.

Character Growth:

At the start, Grid/Shin Youngwoo, was a character that many people disliked (me included), because of his horrible personality. At times, I wanted him to fail at achieving his goals because of his personality so that he can learn something. But as time progressed, I realized that I started cheering for him, for him to win and prove to the others how great he is (Do you know God Grid?).

Plot/Romance:

Read knowing that there will be minor spoilers.

Spoiler

There are main different plotlines as there many different enemies in the game. Some of the enemies include the Yangbans, the great demons, the empire, etc. There is romance in this novel, both in the game and in real life. In the game, he married an NPC and has a child with her. He truly cares for them, although they aren't really shown which I consider a minor flaw in the story. In real life, there are 2 girls who like him (probably more but I don't remember). Grid is dense about their feelings because he is traumatized from when he was rejected by a girl he had a crush on. The 2 girls who like him are central side characters and are very beautiful and actually have personalities. The girls don't fall him in one chapter like some girls do in some novels, they fall in love with him throughout his growth.

[collapse]

Characters:

The side characters are all interesting and have personality and their own circumstances. The people who admire Grid are not like the typical people from wuxia novels. They admire him because they know about his past and how he grew to achieve what he did. His friends admire him and like him, they are not blindly following him, in fact they were there with him when he was unlikable and they all witnessed his growth firsthand. There are other amazing side characters such as the NPC's but the review is getting too long.

I would recommend this novel to people who enjoy the MC experiencing growth, albeit it takes time. This novel is great for people who like reading novels about virtual reality games, games, etc. <<less

Best novel I ever read. Started with the little squishy webtoon so I can speak for the very beginning. But this story.. This Game. And these mindblowing twists of fate, making Grid seem born to win, are just an amazing piece of work Mr. Author put there together. I have yet to find a part of it that I dislike. Even the style of writing. I can only be satisfied ;)

An epic epic. If you read the description of the story, you know the MC has some (well lots) of room to grow at the beginning of the story.
Don't let that put you off, even in the early chapters, the MC is plenty entertaining and even kind of sympathetic since he has virtues to counter his vices, and the world and side characters all pop off of the page.
Once you get to the meat of the story and see how far ahead the author has been planning out... more>> various developments you will be floored, and if ever there was a section early on that you struggled with it will be redeemed with meaning.
Do yourself a favor and find out why Overgeared is consistently at the top of the ratings on this site. <<less

This novel has become one of my most favourite. It's funny, theres alot of action, its well written. I'm just enjoying myself.

It started off as something that was hardly interesting in the beginning as most people have already mentioned. The MC was simply annoying in the beginning with hardly any character development and as the story progressed so did our MC. From the crappiest MC imaginable to what he is now (do you know God Grid?!). You have to get into it to fully enjoy yourself.

Already read 15-25 novel with all sorts of genres, few of them are vmmo or mmo.

So why I am voting 5 stars? idk - Simple to read, has great world building, MC grows, world building is nice, fights are really easy to read, one of those novels when you will not stop until you finish (why is it so hard to think of positives while I like reading it so much)

What I don't like - Characters other than MC who seemed OP aren't, You seem to thing that... more>> MC has OP gear then somehow everything seems harder than it supposed to be, really frustrating to see MC's friends be so f*cking weak then strong then again weak (can't understand why they can't grow), has a lot of lies or misconceptions (like only 9 legendary classes when it seem like you can become legendary in everything)... I start to hate harem

huh it seems like there are a lot of thing that frustrates me but still there are a lot of positives that only while you read you will be able to understand <<less

pathetic MC. 26 years old but immature to the core. MC is money minded person but not the same as LMS MC. LMS MC is always can think with his brain 'what can I sell', 'where I can sell', 'what can I make then where to sell'. he use every single ways to earn gold. but this MC has OP class and just learn blacksmith > got normal weapon > grumble in many line not learn how he has a flaw > not sell it > pursuing money with legend... more>> or epic weapon to sell (when I read not a single sentences that he sell his normal weapon only his rare, epic, legend that he sell)

when MC got request a quest he think with emotion not his brain !! he is 26 yo ! immediately reject. imho, this can make a story how MC develope more and change his character through what he experience (cause the game maker itself in story tell the MC is immature not search info for anything and not try anything. not have a dream or goal except for money and some pussies) and author can make it so MC can use his brain cell at least *sigh....

Spoiler

in the first he blacksmithing he can make powerfull arrow but he didn't make it anymore. and people trying to grab him as to become their personal blacksmith. he didn't give a f*ck about that when he can reach such a multiple price in his work.

I just had to write this. I saw many people here saying stuff like the novel sucks, wait for chap 100 for the good part, the early chapters are so boring, main character is noob and dumb and immature etc etc. Sure is though but thats part of the development. The MC might show worse attitude at first but you will surely like how he never gives up to achieve something. He perseveres. It is really cool that the novel teaches you that even if you aren't the talented you... more>> can achieve something through hard work, and for me that's worth 5 star ratings. People won't stop talking about how horrible the start of the story is because the MC is such an as*hole or whatever, but having read through the first ~100 chapters I can't help but feel people are whining about nothing. Yeah, the MC is a piece of sh*t but that's what makes the story funny! First off, this series starts off a bit slow and sub-par but it gets better around around ch100. The MC is not your generic MC that goes around saving everyone he sees. The character development for the MC is very well done where you see him grow from a guy blinded by money, useless, weak and blames everyone for his own failure, into someone who is respectable, things for himself and others and capable of recognizing his own strengths and shortcomings and make use of it. Do try to keep... more>> reading till ch100, you definitely won't regret and will continue reading it on till the latest chapter.

As most of the other reviews said, the MC is a paragon of character growth. He starts off as a really really REALLY despicable character, but as he faces more and more adversaries that come with his power, he naturally matures and turns more likable. Aside from the MC, the world-building and characters are also holy guacamole bajeezums legendary. If I had to say, the amount of detail that goes into describing and making the world feel more alive and actually feel like it was already fully functional before the... more>> story started is the best out of (almost, because of The Wandering Inn) all the novels I've read online.

Overall, if and only IF you can get past the first hundred (or 200-300 chapters if you like it well-done) chapters (I know it seems a lot but trust me on this one), then you can get one hell of a good time. Every single day you will wait in excitement as you watch the time ticking towards the series's update (Well, that happened for me at least.).

Notes: As for the other reviews expressing their dissatisfaction with Grid, I can only say I'm surpised. I'm going out on a leg here saying this, but I am assuming that these people cursing the main character's incompetence are the same people who would read those self-satisfying novels and nod along as its main characters buy s*aves and bashes in the heads of one-dimensional villains with their one-dimensional personality, all the while ignoring the gaping plot and ethical thought holes rearing their heads in each of the novel's conversation and monologue. I'm sorry if that sounds like I'm stereotyping them, but I really am just disappointed in their impatient temperance, which, now that I think about it, seems a bit hypocritical doesn't it? On a side note, the novel (or at the very least its recent chapters) have these monologues, which surprisingly have some wisdom to them. It really reflects what the author thinks about certain subjects quite clearly. Kudos to them. <<less
