I really enjoyed the story up through the fight with the dryads, and I've enjoyed parts past that, but I feel like the story has fallen into too many stereotypes from about that point on. When it was just a kookie crazy bastard skeleton and his talking horse playing everyone and taking everything, it was great. This story also makes the cardinal sin of letting your skeleton protag turn into an actual human. How s*upid is that? I'm mostly reading it out of obligation at this point but... more>> it's definitely lost its charm for me.

Follow Up: afterword

Everything I said above applies and it gets even worse until it ends really horridly. <<less

Very satisfying so far. I was surprised to see the story had a straight up villain protagonist, though I think the author would disagree on that statement. Still, Shin Woo isn't overly cruel and he's kind of charming in what a sheer bastard he is, so it's easy to ignore. Plus, he's been pointed by the goddess at (probably) even worse people than he is.

Really hoping we don't have the goddess be the final boss. It'd be kind of annoying after the mess that Every Else Is A Returnee devolved... more>> into with its Gnostic nonsense.

Loses another star for the terrible ending. <<less

Enjoyable if you like power trip and smart MC novel.

I like it better than Toika other novel. MC is smart and isn't dense unlike MC from Toika other novels.

Spoiler

And don't worry, he will get his human body back

I think this novel is pretty good in spite of many flaws. It is fast paced, there is simple game based system (the author hasn't overthought things).

Taking into account that this story was given shounen and action genres, it doesn't has many flaws which are present in similar works. For example, it doesn't have immature/pseudo harem. The author also cut out a lot of emotions from characters. I think it is a good practice if you don't want to complicate things to much and make emotionally inconsequential MC.... more>> Sometimes, it is better to use something less than use it worse.

If the reader want it to be the same as the EER story of this author, they will be most likely disappointed. In my case, I think it is good if author doesn't write the same or very similar story again. It gives you information that he at last try to be creative, to look for new and to enhance his writing skill. We also need to be aware that likes and dislikes of authors are often present in each of his works.

If someone think there is no plot then he is wrong.

Spoiler

There is undead empire where MC is thrown in by someone calling herself god. Then MC becomes undead in exchange for more power and the god also wanted to create a new experimental hero, because the previous ones weren't good enough. Then he has few goals. The first survive, the second to gate his body back. He needs to cure the empires curse and to do that he need to be stronger. He also make for himself goals like making some sort of revenge against god. His every action creates a plot line. We also get the mystery in the plot line. What was exact reason for emperor to create this curse in the first place. There was little explanation during early chapters but I think author has something more complex in store for us. He doesn't smack us with whole mystery plot line form start of the story. This is a good practice.

Some people may say that there is ZERO character development. I would like to disagree, there is always some of character development and like I said earlier: "Sometimes, it is better to use something less than use it worse."

For those who scream that the MC is too OP, I added this tag. <<less

It's so much fun to read. Work, work and work. No rest at all. No unnecessary annoying romance. Just a man who is determined and not so intense. He is like speed running it. He is fooling himself and everybody. There are some lame parts. But then the novel takes a shuffle and everything is moving in a rapid pace. The plot at the end and the second part of the story is so much fun to read. I've given it a 4 stars because it doesn't deserve 5 and... more>> I Also don't like perfect novels. Also MC sacrificed a lot but gained something unique. I dropped in the middle but picked it up to be very satisfied in the end. <<less

This one was surprisingly soo good one. I can say it's underrated.

MC is clever and smart, This one gave a great time. But I wanted this to be longer like 1000+ chapter would've been good for this interesting MC and plot.

The best concept was the secret magic shop accessible to all heroes were the MC could trade skills for bones. The interaction with the sellers and the fact the shop was a closed space made me think there was some kind of conspiration somewhere with the MC being used. The MC backstory is never explained before coming to this alternated universe. Were is memories modified? During the last arc, he unlocks things by believing it. What if god was a player as well who just 'believed' she had space/time manipulation.... more>> Are they both locked in this paralel world, coming from a place where life as we know is solved by machines were the only way for human (who are augmented and I assume can use dimension travel and reality manipulation) to do something is to lock themselves in another world and loose their memories because machine are just much more intense and better? Are the game elements, characters, the plot, even some other players that are one-dimensional vilains (or even god) pre-generated elements that are relics of machines from such advanced world? There is this thing about "tricking" the world for the MC when he does some plot manipulation. But every place feel so lonely like the golem underground base, the king castle, even the secret shop. I tough he was preparing for some kind of real stage, wich would be when he returns to his real world. Assuming he realize he is locked there before...

good things : 1 the level barrier. A level 2 cannot compete with level 3 because of the doubled stats and the percent bonus to the stats (I dont remember how much) for that level.
2 game logs.
3 Believe it or not the non-existence of threats is a force in this novel. You could say I am part of the audience the author tried to reach.
Bad things : 1 The horse friend. She really felt useless. Like she was just a tool for deplacments because of her speed and that's it. She wasn't improving. It felt like those flash game you played when you were kid. Good for the nostalgia : "Oh I forgot it existed" and they never aged as well.
2 The harem obviously. It doesnt give any toughts of quality.
3 The whole nicknaming thing and Paul Zero. It's really filler and childish (I'm childish as well but it was too much.)
4 the two world and two kings with the source stuff story. It was really hard to follow. <<less

I'd give this 4, 8 to be precise. Not a bad novel, not the best either, because people always compare this to EER which is tough. The story is still enjoyable and interesting enough to make you curious about how the next chapter gonna turned out, and still have Toika characteristics of writing. I like the system too.

Although this novel has its fair share of originality and uniqueness, essentially, this novel is a power fantasy novel. It has a ridiculously powerful MC with an unprecedented growth rate who can solve everything and is the "knight in shining armor" for all the girls. This is really the only thing that spoiled this novel for me, but having an overpowered MC is a genre by itself and it's unfair to judge a novel by its genre. This was the only reason why I didn't enjoy this novel as much... more>> as others: because it followed its genre faithfully. I would definitely recommend this, but only to the fans of the OP MC genre.

The story at start is more about the situation that our MC to adabt and less about character develoment and has alot

thinks that dont get explained or seem not to make sense on the readers point of view.

BUT! after the story progresed a little you get everythink explained and you say to yourself "AH now I get why this...

... more>> and how this is...". The character develoment might come for some kinda late but it sets the personallity of our characters clear for use to understand.

You mind find that our MC becommes way to OP. The MC is way to intelligent and uses the best ways to try to become stronger. well he is stubidly lucky though like everyone else MC but Everything makes kind of sense if you understand how he became this strong. Was realy a fun experince to read this LN and reccoment others to read it too. There were times I though I am going to die from my laughter xD.

so yeah.. have fun with this one guys.

and remember that everythink that others do might seems stubid but it gets explained why so thinks are.

(expekt of this elf hero... was it me or had she zero character develoment in the whole story?) <<less

Solid 4 stars might even be a 5 if the Joker plot didn't feel so forced to distinguish this novel from other Toika novels, this is a fun read a breath of fresh air from redundant smug young master wuxia's rinse and repeat...

TL:Dr version

IT's a good novel with a clever MC and a plot that is dumb but is clearly trying to be so it feels natural. Biggest issue is the ending resolves hardly anything besides the absolute core of the plot and leaves the fate of the characters and world completely open.

Longer version

I have not read this author's other works yet which might be a bit of a problem given this is his latest one. But at the same time it means I can compare this more to novels in general and not his other works.

The start of the novel is great. He becomes a skeleton and has to struggle to survive. Slowly gaining experience and skills and doing his best to avoid stuff beyond him. After a while he starts to get OP and everything is still pretty good. Even though the MC is OP so is most of the boss level characters. In fact he still has to rely on tricks to win for MOST of the novel and doesn't just abandon planning like some MC's do because being OP often means the author doesn't have to put effort into coming up with strategies anymore.

However the series is not without it's flaws. First of all is the manner in which the MC progresses. At first it's like building a pyramid with him getting a bunch of lesser skills and building them up into high tier skills or even just developing new ones at a higher level. But this all kind of comes to nothing when the MC gains his [dues ex machina] skill. That's not it's actual name but that's what it is. It's a skill who's effect is [make the MC win if he understands everything]. This in itself isn't bad as turning plot convinece into a literal skill isn't a bad idea. The problem is this skill "absorbs" a lot of the skills that the MC had been hyping up for a while. He claims their effects still exist and he can use them but he never mentions any of those abilities again.

So his skill set suddenly goes down and gets replaced with [He wins because we say so] which is highly unsatisfying compared to the strategic fights that had been up to that point.

The character development is also ended in a half assed manner. The characters are slowly built up pretty well but start to just get left on the side lines near the end and the ending doesn't say at all what happens to them and the only thing we do know is they didn't die.

[collapse]

Overall it's a highly entertaining read and worth taking time for. But the ending will leave you feeling a bit empty. <<less

story : 5/5

characters : 4.5/5

world building : 4.5/5

... more>> A pretty fun ride, thanks to the MC. You got here a shameless MC (he's a skeleton, why should he have a conscience or heart, right ? XD) who goes from weak to strong and becoming a pure manipulator pretty quickly (he could be the mastermind of a thriller ^^). The story is well written with progressive revelations and quite a lot of surprises.

The bad point would be that around the last 1/5 of the story, the author isn't as thorough with the characters's relationship. The end is a bit half-a**ed, it would have been nice to see a bit more, the last arc could have been a dozen chapters longer and it would have feel more satisfying.

The power system isn't bad, it's even pretty interesting, but the way the MC get stronger is just purely on the whim of the author so it gets pretty boring midway. He gets skills easily but he'll end up using only a few repeatedly before getting the next set.

all in all, I laugh quite a lot reading it, the MC is witty (comes from being a korean's salaryman apparently xD) and the story is interesting. Give it a try :) <<less

Toika by the letter, good MC, good settings, nice twists and some grip moments, everything is here for you, but then again is Toika, so we got loose ends who never really settle, no epic ultra megazord last boss battle, and in this novel particularly we have some unfinished business about some side characters/places, nope it certainly won't drag your experience down, but its because this happened that there are 4 stars and not 5, if you like Toika, like to laugh and get some unsuspected twists then go for... more>> it, it worth your time plenty, if you hated IRFN, ICDS or ERR (OMG infidel!) then this one probably is also not for you. <<less

An intresting and some times absurd story with some funny and intresting characters. I recommend trying the first chapters to get a feel for this novel and then decide if its your thing. The only thing I didnt like is its abrupt ending, for everything else I think its a great novel.

The ending isn't the point. It's about the journey, not the destination.

If you can get on board with that, then great! Because this ending is incredibly abrupt. Possibly the most ridiculous Toika ending so far.

There's no closure, no tying up loose ends. Just, it's over, the end.

... more>> However, everything leading UP to the ending is PURE GOLD.

The main character is fleshed out (haha!), the writing is clever and funny. Some novels degrade over time, and you might realize you're just reading them out of habit, or because you've invested so much time that now you have to see it through (sunk cost). That's NOT the case for this.

Every morning, the thing I looked forward to most was my morning coffee and a hot shower, but the daily updates to SFF are a close third! I never got bored. It was never a slog. I never felt I had to see it to the end even though it had gone off the rails and was terrible. Because it was never terrible. It was PURE GOLD all the way to the finale.

The finale itself is meh, but that's ONE CHAPTER out of hundreds. If you can accept that not all questions will be answered and not every subplot resolved and not every Chekhov's Gun fired, then strap in because this novel is a fantastic ride. <<less

Fast paced but still provides just enough slower paced chapters so you don't feel exhausted. The dialogue and callbacks are fantastic, however if you want a story where the MC struggles to reach the apex you'll hate this novel.

I'm not a hardcore fan of romcom or long-distance relationship like in most Chinese novels but I'm sorry when the guy becomes a skeleton and it makes him that slab and even those emotions started to wither over time and that he does not even try to find a way to solve it like trying to arrange things with the goddess I know that everyone has his reasons and his mistakes because the MC was too greedy at first and he has to pay the price in the end all what he has to earn is only 100 life and not immortality as he wanted and those not like Mario or you can get a life back by eating a champi that once lost a life, it is lost in the end it does not to win nothing like these the MC it will always have a loophole

Some characters may lack depth

MC may be too OP and too lucky at times

The novel may seem utterly boring as f*ck

... more>> But if you stop and see how similar the world plot is to dark souls', you start loving it.

To keep everyone in the same page, Dark Souls plot portray a despairing story of a world inflicted by a curse turning everybody even a God into undead. To put it in perspective how damn and despairing that was, imagine being rob of your past, present and future at the same time. You can't remember your self and past; you lose your free will after losing your sanity; and you'll forever roam the world since undead can never die. There's also no undoing the curse.

The novel may not compare to it but it bores that kind of despairing flavor. MC is foreign in this desprssing world so looking at the world in his funny perspective makes it hard to taste it.

In that time of depressions, what the world badly wanted was heroes who would kindle the hope everybody needed. Even the God was now that desprate to rely on individuals that are mostly indifferent in purifying the empire as long as it gets done.

Spoiler

She hugged the MC after he deafeated one of the generals. After all those stress, she can't help but be happy to experience hope albeit faintly. Maybe it's her that needs more saving than the empire? Hehe

[collapse]

There are also few little sad stories in it such as the fate of the Generals, experiment subjects and more but they weren't explore much yet until the plot thickens and executed in a sayisfying way.

When you start reading the novel for the plot, you won't be bother much on how undevelop some charaters are or how the MC is too OP and all.

A little advice from someone who enjoyed the novel?

Avoid looking the world in the foreign heroes perspectives too much. Not that I'm saying that most of them especially the MC are insentive prick... well maybe the MC is but he might get character development later on about it. They just don't fully understand what's hapenning in the empire... MC is doing a better job in that part though.

Also, the first volume sucks since it's building things up so just take a deep breathe. <<less
