Criminal psychologist and ‘leftover’ woman Su Xiaopei was informed by the God Of Marital Fates, Yue Lao, that her destined lover had been in a car accident, which caused his soul to be sent to another world. But because the red strings of fate between them were bound so tightly, both would suffer three reincarnations of loveless lives if the strings were ever broken. And so, Su Xiaopei was ordered to bring back this mysterious man.

But what does he look like? No idea.

What is his personality like? No idea.

What does he do for a living? No idea.

Can she opt not go? Of course not.

As a believer in all things logical, Su Xiaopei found herself running up against a serious wall.

The bottom line: This is a story about a modern female psychologist who traveled to an alternative, ancient Chinese world and an adorable warrior as they experience love and solve crimes.

I have to say....... this story was such an unexpected gem, I really, really love it and I think I can say with confidence that it's my favorite CNovel to date! So I'll state my reasons why by dividing my review into sections on what I think is most important to elaborate on:

    • Characters:
Spoiler

The female lead (FL) and male lead (ML) are some of the most realistic and well developed characters I've read (in CNovels lol).

The FL is so, so refreshing to me - for one, she's 26/27!!!! Hooray for no adult-transmigrating-into-a-teenager's body! And she acts her age (for the most part) !!! The FL is intelligent, has strong moral principles, practical, confident, adaptable, yet can also be stubborn and even petty and arrogant at times but she has her heart in the right place. She isn't some perfect assassin/miracle doctor/etc cold beauty who is ruthless and only cares about herself. No, she is flawed but she cares about other people and is able to admit her mistakes. The best part is she is actually written struggling, going through a storm of emotions, but always pulling through. She's really tenacious and hardworking, and as she struggles through adapting to the ancient world to find someone she didn't even know, I truly sympathized with her - something that isn't always possible with the 1-dimensional protagonists of this genre.

As for the ML..... he was so surprisingly wonderful, I'm not sure how I can read another of these types transmigrating into Ancient China novels and not want the MLs to be like this one. Unlike most of the MLs in this genre, he isn't cold and unemotional and ruthless, he doesn't treat others like they are beneath him and best of all, he doesn't treat women like they are useless and disgusting creatures to him. In fact, at first I thought the ML would be somewhat boring, he was really patient and kind with the FL since the beginning but as their relationship grows, we start to see hidden sides to him that make him more than just the kind-hearted soldier who saved the FL and another young woman. He's very intelligent and capable, he's patient and kind, but he's also arrogant and likes to be praised and he's sly - but not really in a malicious way, more like tricking this young, rich and naive official to pay for his travel expenses, for example. He is a breath of fresh air, a real human being that I could understand why the modern FL would be attracted to him.

[If fo you can't tell....I really LOVE the ML hahahaha, he's just my favorite type of ML]

As for side characters.... tbh, the side characters aren't as developed as the main leads but that's okay for me, I still really enjoy the story. BYL, the rich and naive official, I mentioned is hilarious and his relationship to both FL amd ML is great! Also the Yue Lao is fun too hahaha.

    • Plot:
Spoiler

At first the plot seems sort of out there - she has to go to the past to search for her supposed soulmate who she has never met??? But imo that makes it much more refreshing than the typical betrayed-by-sister-and-bf and killed before suddenly transmigrating with no real reason. Not to the say the latter isn't okay, it's whatever tbh, I can suspend my belief for this genre, but it's nice to see the transmigration have actual logic.... even if it IS

on the supernatural side lol.

I also really enjoyed that it was the FL as herself who transmigrated - or well.... more like body hopped into the past? Since she's in her PJs when she finds herself in a tree lol! Like.... there's no taking over someone else's body and stuff, which is also very refreshing.

Anyway, the plot starts moving somewhat slowly at the beginning because the FL really has to adapt to the ancient world where she knows nobody and has virtually no support [except for her savior LOL] unlike most FLs. It's really realistic, for the most part, and I enjoyed seeing her use her skills as a criminal psychologist to make a living when she got the chance to.

There's also a lot of solving of cases but at the same time it doesn't detract from the FL's original goal, so the dose of mystery is great for a mystery lover like me!!

EDIT: One thing I found is that unlike a lot of CNovels, the plot is much better structured here. We aren't hit smack in the face with the MC being betrayed by her half-sister / lover / etc and then boom, she's reborn. Instead we're allowed to first meet the MC and understand a little of her normal life before she's sent to the past, allowing us to better know the character and her story as well be willing to root for her. In most CNovels, we're just hit with the character and practically forced to sympathize with the MC bc she's going through something obviously horrible.... but since we don't really know her, it feels empty and lacking in depth, more shock-value than anything. Thankfully this doesn't happen here.

    • Romance:
Spoiler

IMO, this is how romance should be written. It's very gradual but at a good, REALISTIC pace and the best part is that the FL and ML become

friends before considering each other romantically. Like, they really do become friends, comrades, etc. that rely on each other (moreso the FL than the ML lol, but I don't mind tbh since it's not like she has any power in this world) and end up forming a real relationship full of mutual care, trust, and understanding. Paired, of course, with the gradual growing fondness that they have for each other that later manifests into true feelings of love~~~

Like..... idk, if you've read many of these novels, you'd be as blown away as I am. For one, the couple actually interacts like real people, not just love at first sight or oh-the-modern-FL's-soul-in-previous-weak-body-is-interesting, I-this-prince-better-keep-an-eye-on-her -.- Like their relationship ACTUALLY develops, and they do get annoyed at each other (moreso FL than ML again hahaha, ML is kind of.... shameless at times and likes to tease her) and have banter, but it's never malicious nor is there really any love-hate sh*t that can get rather tiring.

    • Translation:
Spoiler

Now, this is where some people with higher standards might have... problems? The translation isn't the best, it isn't very polished and has errors here and there, but they aren't to the point where it's unreadable. The important part is that the general feeling and meaning of the story is gotten across and I still enjoy the story very much, even if it isn't the most seamless translation ever. I also want to thank the translators for their hard work, I don't mind the slow translations since I know this story is long and the chapters are really long too!

Probably the most realistic transmigration story I've read yet. Not really sure if what I wrote below is considered a spoiler or not, but just in case:

Spoiler

The MC is a psychologist living in the modern era who never had to worry much about her living situation and is used to modern utilities and all that. When she migrates, there's so much different that it seems that the author actually put some effort into making it more realistic. Words and phrases are different compared to modern and ancient times even in the same language (like thine and your in English), the MC has no clue what to call herself or address other people, and isn't used to the admittedly much sturdier bodies people had back in the day when cars did exist. She is pretty much a lost lamb, average physique (Like, she could prob hike for a couple hours, but not a whole day), and isn't OP, but she's good at what she does, which is criminal psychology.

The ML isn't some OP character background (that I'm aware of, though it does seem quite sketchy, so he might be more than is being shown currently) and doesn't have OP skills. He doesn't fall in love/gets interested with the MC immediately, but he doesn't try to kill her or get rid of her either. So far he seems like a nice dude with the patience of a saint because the MC is super clueless after transmigrating, but her clueless nature is not yet to the point where it's irritating because it makes sense and she does try to figure out how to assimilate better. I'm really hoping that it continues to go this well or I might just drop this if it suddenly takes a wrong turn.

Wonderful novel, it is really refreshing and uncommon in comparison with the other dozens of transmigration novels here on novelupdates.

The MC is transported into a parallel world set as the ancient China and she has to find her soulmate so she can go back to her world. Problem is, she doesn't know what her soulmate looks like, she only knows his name and when she wakes up suddenly into a forest wearing her "modern" pajamas, the task seems a bit daunting.

Fortunately, hope is not lost thanks to a kind and very patient man who takes pity on her, even if takes a big little effort for the MC to persuade him, protecting her and correcting her when she uses modern language or shows an improper behavior for that time.

There are comical moments, two people getting to know each other and an original plot, it certainly merits more than 5 stars. <<less

I love the storyline. It's very interesting. Not the usual novel where you know right away who's the ML though I think it's the person that she met first when she transmigrated (well, hoping that he is). The progression of the story is well-paced (imo). It gets you hooked as you read along.

I like it. It’s quite different in the fact that it mentions all the day to day life difficulties a modern women will face living in ancient time.

The romance is very slow but this makes it more realistic and interesting. It’s slow paced but enjoyable. I’m really looking forward to how it’ll turn out. Hopefully it won’t suddenly become disappointing in the future.

I like the flow of the story so far. It's not your typical transmigration or travel to another world so it's refreshing for me. However, it's not the type that will hook you right away. It keeps getting better the more you read. It's only my own opinion though. I look forward to more translated chapters. Thanks ebisu translations for this.

I would give it more to be honest, but I have to point out a problem to the translators. The author has revised a lot of chapters from maybe chapter 50. The translators didn't check when they found out errors, just thinking that it was a problem with the raw that would sort itself out. ITS NOT, the old versions and new versions have been mixed up so its messy. I personally dont like commenting on translators when reviewing as I although they have an impact its only when you... more>> read their translation not the actual story. But I feel that this could have been avoided by just googling some raws and check the actual raw page as revisions on chapters are described by author in the title page.

Such a beautiful story! One of the best bg romance I have ever read. The transmigration and the way FL was unaccustomed and was trying to adjust in ancient world was realistic.

The chemistry between the leads was so touching, adorable, distressing and sweet. Really loved the dynamic between the leads. The plot was also engaging that forced me to mtl rest of the chapters till the end. Really loved it

Edit: Thank you for picking up this novel!

This is simply one of my favorite novels on NU!

The story starts when our MC ends up suddenly transmigrating to a forest, or more accurately on a tree, wearing her modern clothes, in the middle of feudal China with a mandate - In order to return to modern times, you must find your soulmate! It's just... there's no cheats for once: no past memories, no hidden abilities and no family to rely on. All our MC has is her smarts, her ability to... more>> adapt and her deep desire to find a way back home

This ended up being one of the most funny, heartfelt, authentic and sometimes awkward portrayal of the difficulties of living in ancient times as a modern women. I simply fell in love with the MC and the ML was such a pearl as well :)

It also has some "detectives" stories and mysteries in there which were so well done and enjoyable!

I definitely recommend this novel!

Also, thumbs up to the earlier translator "Ebisu" for their work and the way they managed to convey all the subtle humor which was golden to me :) <<less

The story so far is well written, the pacing is good and the developing relationship between the MC and ML is slow and realistic. The deduction aspect is also well written.

The MC is likeable to me since she feel very grounded in her personality. She is physically weak, yes but she makes it up with her cleverness and quick thinking. She doesn't rush into things and act maturely according to her age. Even when she is clever, she are still in disadvantage and rely on ML when smooth talking is... more>> needed and it doesn't feel degrading, it was just the cultural shock and she adjust to it very quickly.

ML is also likeable to me as he has a glib tongue but an honest gentleman. He will take advantage of situations if needed (such as making juniors pay for his food and officials for his lodgings and rewards), but he still have a very strong self-imposed code of honour. He listens to MC and doesn't disregard her even once. He treats her as with respect.

Their relationship developed very naturally, starting from strangers helping each others to friends to something else. Honestly him teasing her is very hilarious and cute and I'm dying from laughing and the fluff.

The mystery on the other hand is also very well written. It seems that MC's world and the ML's world have connection in terms of the mystery.

Although during c50 something the author seemed to have revised the story but the translation was not aware, so there might be some confusion during the read.

Very solid story. Thank you translaters for picking up this novel. <<less

I'm leaving a review here to bring justice to the ratings (4.3 as of writing). No, no, no, noー! I could only give it a perfect 5 star! Actually 10/5 if I could!

Since I'm still suffering from post-reading depression (lol), it's gonna be short for now.

Interesting premise, excellent story execution, good characterization, funny, thrilling, thought-provoking, heartwarming, angsty, happy ending... Yeah, I adore this story so much!

Oh please, if you're one of those who dropped this or have given this a low rating due to the big WTF moment mid-chapter due... more>> to confusion, please reconsider! The later 'version' (the tree!) of the FL's "return to ***" is the real one. The author admitted that he/she kinda f*cked up a little during the story's 'overhaul'. Please give it another chance.

I love the author's writing style. Will check their other novel for sure.

Highly recommended! <<less
