This stands at the forefront of strategy guides to Life (a shitty video game)!

Life is a bad video game. This commonplace phrase is, unfortunate as it might be, the truth.

After all, Life has no simple, easy rules. The rules it does have are nothing but irrational and unfair. The strong claim that Life has a high level of freedom, but the weak have no choice but to cope with an overwhelmingly disadvantageous design.

That’s why it’s a sh*t game.

Since I, Japan’s leading gamer who has experienced and mastered a multitude of games, say so, there can be no mistake.

— However, that person, on top of having mastered gaming to about the same level as I, declared to me that Life is a god-tier game.

Destined to be a top-tier character, that person is the school’s perfect heroine, Hinami Aoi. And to top it off, she even says she will teach me the rules of Life?

…… Normally, I wouldn’t believe such a thing. However, Hinami Aoi is someone who does not fit into a frame like ‘normal’ at all!

From the winner of the 10th Shogakukan Light Novel Award for Excellence. A low-tier character takes on life’s strategy guide, but with instruction from a pretty girl!

I would heavily recommend reading to volume 3 before forming an opinion on the novel.

I can't comment on translations for this novel because I read the Yen Press release.

Jaku-Chara Tomazaki-Kun is a novel about growth. Tomozaki is an otaku, a geek, a nerd. He has no friends and no social skills, sitting at the bottom of the social hierarchy. But he is the best player in Japan in a fighting game called Atafumi. Then he has a fateful encounter with the second best player in Japan, Aoi Hinami, the perfect... more>> heroine from his high school who decides to coach him in "the game of life". So begins the journey of young Tomozaki.

Obviously, it's unrealistic. It's wish fulfillment. In what world would such a flawless, beautiful girl form a connection with Tomozaki, the bottom rung of the social ladder to help him? But the content of the novel is actually fairly interesting. It takes an analytical approach to intuitive social phenomena like "being cool" or "the mood", and I'd say it nails it for the most part. Of course, this is also a point of contention for the novel, since some of the tasks Hinami assigns him are morally nebulous

(example being pursuing multiple girls at once)

, or just turn out incredibly awkward (which makes sense, since Tomozaki is socially inept).

But that's not my favorite part about this series. I don't know how popular anime is among people on this website, but one of my favorite anime of all time is Toradora (a polarizing take, I know). This is because it develops every character on the main cast, and treats them like real people with real conflicts and real feelings. And surprisingly enough, Jaku-Chara does something similar. Starting from around volume 3, when Tomozaki has "leveled up" enough to somewhat function socially, Tomozaki grows a spine. He starts having his own thoughts about people and about his way of life. And this is also where the novel starts seriously developing other characters, and where I feel the novel actually becomes good. It takes a look at the characters' values, their beliefs, why they act the way they do, how they see the world, how they react to change, etc. Every character feels real, like I can understand how they feel.

The reason I give this a series 4/5 instead of a 5/5 is not just because of the early volumes, but actually because I felt that the later volumes became too melodramatic and broke my immersion. But I still recommend this series; it's a good read. <<less

reason to read This LN :
•Tutorial to become "𝗥𝗶𝗮𝗷𝘂𝘂" under disguise of Romcom LN

• Easy to understand Conflict

• 3D dimensional Character

• The Character development is Good

Recommended for those of you who like romcom stuff like oregairu. The MC has similar traits to Hachiman but he's trying to be a better person.

So i've read this a long time ago (early 2018) but didn't review because I didn't have an account, but since the translator have dropped the TL due to Copyright claim by Yen-press I decided might as well give it my two cents

The pros:

  1. Realistic growth: MC didn't magically become a confident man that can talk to anyone without fear
  2. 3 dimensional character: This novel is one of a small list of novel that has a character that feel like they think like a human being and not thinking for the plot
The... more>> cons:

  1. Slow pacing: While for some people this isn't a bad thing (which I agree with), I still put this in here just in-case people doesn't like the idea of novel with a slow pacing
  2. Monologue: Now don't get me wrong, monologue is an important tool for author to flash out a character, but for some people that dislike a long internal monologue that might seems pointless, this novel might not be for you
And that is a small list of pros and cons, but do remember that review is, at the end of the day, a personal opinion and might not apply to people. Always read what pique your interest, and don't let peoples opinion hinder it from you. <<less
