The countries of Mephius and Garbera have been waging a war for ten years and are trying to put an end to this long fight through a political marriage between the two royal families. Orba, who was driven from his home because of the war and was forced to become a gladiator, looks exactly like the crown prince of Mephius, and it has been decided he will be substituting him during the wedding ceremony. On the other hand, Vileena, the princess of Garbera, has secretly decided to ensnare the crown prince for her own country’s interests.

Excellent light novel, truly 5-stars has romance, action, and most importantly a MC who isn't afraid to stain his hands or do what needs to be done.

Only downside is that despite this novel being very good, ultimately it is kind of saddening that in terms of time, the plot isn't very long and not many grand developments really happen even up to the end

While I enjoyed the journey the ending was pretty anticlimactic and somewhat disappointing. Like I said you should still read the story and experience this amazing tale yourself but don't get your hopes up for an "amazing" ending.

My favourite light novel ever. Not exaggerating. Highly recommend people to check this out.

Most distinct thing I like about this novel is the characters, also the MC being one of my favourites (clever and strong, but also got his distinct weaknesses). Author also takes the time to flesh out the side characters. Characters are not always good or bad, right or wrong, but essentially they develop based on their circumstances, obligations, personality etc. Seem very much human and realistic.

There is always something to keep you on the edge of your... more>> seat for the plot. Nothing too deep or goes crazy, but definitely very interesting as I just can't wait to learn what happens next. Sub-plots also keep you nervous as it foreshadows towards the future developments. The world that is built in this novel is also very much alive and not something that revolves around the MC.

This is something any book/novel lover should try. No matter what your tastes, I think people can recognize this is definitely a great series this author wrote. Also kudos to the amazing translators! <<less

May I just say I enjoy some of the interactions. The story flows well enough and it all makes sense. My biggest complaint would be how convoluted and boorish it can be at times. Like I get it this guy is evil, main guy hates him do we have to drone on and on about every detail of his plan and who the evil man is using? Like all I care about is the relationship between the princess and the gladiator turned prince. Yet they do not get much time... more>> in the books so far. Most of it seems to be explaining the evil guys plans, then hero saving it.. then maybe a bit of that complicated relationship between the MC and others.

If you like somewhat complicated book, that has very detailed descriptions of everything this is for you. I give it a 4/5 leaning more 3/5 because it is well written and the plot is somewhat interesting enough to keep me reading. That being said I have read things I have enjoyed much more. I could never give this a 5/5 because sometimes I have to skim through the end of a chapter going dear lord can I get to something interesting I get it he is evil stop droning on about it. So after I skim a lot of the evil sides parts I could never go perfect but when it is of his perspective it is quite good. In fact you can probably just skip all the bad guys being bad guys parts and still understand the story I have just by skimming it. In truth they should have skipped it because not only do you have to read about it... he tells you how he feels a lot and why he does so it seems repetitive. Also as a side note this book details some side characters more than I have seen books detail their main characters. Which is nice and all but I can imagine it on my own and it takes a lot of time to read through considering just how many names are in this book series. Because there are always multiple plots happening at the same time interweaving it takes a lot of people. So if you like being told everything that is a nice point but I on the other hand was like why do I care what this maid looks like? she said two things and is used once in the plot. Why did she have more lines describing her than words she has spoken?

Finish it off saying there is better out there I think but nothing here is a deal breaker for me so I can recommend it. <<less

Rakuin no Monshou is one of the best novels I have read. Putting it on my personal ranking, it's right next to Release That Witch.

What I really love about this novel is the solid world building, multi-dimensional characters and the action and drama that really grips your heart.

9/5

It's amazing how I remember every character's name. The side characters don't just come and after achieving the goal, they never appear again. No, you'll see them again and they could even have character growth. A enemy of the MC could become his ally and it wouldn't be just following the MC for no reason, he wouldn't trust the MC fully at first so the reader can see the process of logical decision turning into respect. I am glad I decided to give this a chance, already up to date... more>> in one day because I couldn't put this down. <<less

If you're expecting to read chapters jam packed with punching and explosions like the majority of web novels you see on this site then this isn't where you will get that.

If you're looking for a story that is truly trying to tell a story then this will probably please you. It's a proper novel experience, not a mindless episodic punchfest (ATG/PMG/etc). The setting and events remind me a lot of Final Fantasy Tactics, very pleased I picked this up.

Don't misunderstand though, there is action, but the story is more than... more>> finding the next punching bag or harem member. <<less

I find the high rating for this novel completely inexplicable. There are much better novels here that are rated much worse. The story itself isn't bad, but the writing style is rather tedious. The world is dark, almost overly so, and the "romance" is nonexistent. The worst part is that the story just bizarrely ends without any real resolution, almost as if the author got tired of writing and decided to wrap things up by explaining everything away within a page or two. The whole journey feels like it got... more>> cut short without a proper payoff because the Author couldn't find out how to properly write the series to its conclusion. The main character is just unlikeable and hard to identify with. His actions often make little logical sense and it feels as if the plot guides his actions more than anything. Its not the worst story I've read, but its definitely on the bottom half.

The translation however, is pretty good. I can't remember any real problem there. Its just a dreary story that feels incomplete. <<less

Everything makes sense. Well mostly. No s*upid characters, no op MC, honestly this novel is written so well it can hold it's own against most popular novels like the GOT, Eragon series, or Harry Potter series

This series could have been a masterpiece. However, it ends on one of the dumbest cliffhangers I've seen. Honestly, the last 2 volumes were a huge slog to get through and I have no idea what the author was thinking. With those last 2 volumes, he could have definitely tied up loose ends and ended on a strong note... But instead he creates even more loose ends and plot twist that will never be closed as the novel has ended. Was a real disappointment at the end. I would rate... more>> the series 4/5 for the first 10 volumes and a 1/5 for the last 2. <<less

Way too average, I give the story a 3/5. Wouldnt recommend reading unless you have nothing else to do

Main character is likable and not too generic but the FL tries to act likes shes strong but ends up being a damsel in distress. There's a lot of politics and wars in this novel, which can be good but the politics part is very convoluted, theres way too much information dump out meaningless crap and often the emperors and kings seem to invade countries on the spur for literally no reason.... more>> Only real thing going was for this novel is that is has no harem and seeing the outcome of the MC's revenge. <<less

Do not read this if you don't like wall of text.

This novel is a monologue-fill, discussion-fill novel full of planning and conspiracies. The romance with the princess is almost non-existant but when it do show it is so great and the world building, the action is also incredible.

The open ending left me wanting for more though.

A Game of Thrones-esque low fantasy world following a village boy, turned gladiatorial-s*ave, turned imperial battle tactician. Unfortunately the politics and annoying characters just bogs down the pacing and thus I got bored halfway through and re-read something more exciting (EEiaR), before coming back to finish this. This is a great novel that I just did not enjoy reading. Yet I can also say that it ended much too early, with far too many lose ends regarding the nature of the world.

The story is good? I don't know so far I've only read thousands of manga's but as far as light novel goes I probably only red 10 so far. That is why I can't muster a complete conclusion.

The story is too detailed. Too detailed that there are so many characters with different perspectives and stories that it's outright confusing. (It took me a while to get used to it) Although it can be justified by the story being centered around warring kingdoms, it doesn't change the fact that some of... more>> the volumes barely even mentions the main character (s). (Are most war novels really like this?)

Gotta give credit for the author for that axed like ending with a damn good plot-wist that forced everything to conclude while still making sense. The problem it left me was Orba's relationship...

I think it's inferred that Vileena doesn't mind Orba having Hou Ran as a concubine? I need someone to clarify this... <<less

Amazing story, chapter 4 had my heart pumping. Immersive, leading you into the story extremely well, placing perspective in the eyes of a child of a farmer turned gladiator allow author to reveal the world of the story slowly and delicately. Very well translated

There is a lot of background information on the kingdoms of this world, and more than needed focus on side characters that will probably not show up after the arc ends. Despite that, it is a well written story and has plenty of likeable characters. The MC is a gladiator, through and through, but was still interested in reading as many books as he could get his hands on. In turn, with his life experience and knowledge of books, helped him become a good strategist.

It is one of the best... more>> novels out there for the first four volumes, but I lost interest afterwards. <<less
