Nurturing the Hero to Avoid Death

Description

“Please, I implore you to save the world.” This is what a goddess in white says to me in a pure-white space. Such is the standard line that suggests the game is about to begin. Please say this stirring line to boys and girls with sparkling eyes! It’s wrong to direct it to someone like me, who’s exhausted from job hunting! When I declined her politely, she flew into a fit of tears; when I agreed to assist her on small tasks out of reflex, she proclaimed: “it’ll be fine if you just help in the Starting-Village Arc. Please guide the Hero!” Then she tossed me into another world. No, this is a world modeled after a game that this gamer goddess likes…

I have not finished this novel yet. While I read the translations, I do read Japanese and I will provide some notes on cultural differences in the novel that might add some context to anyone interested. The translations themselves do a great job of trying to inject the taste of Japanese language so you can feel the linguistic differences. My comments are about the novel and not the quality of the translations themselves.

About the story

A young man who played a difficult game encounters a goddess who happens to also love... more>> said game and she creates an entire world around it. However, no matter how she tries, good does not prevail in this world. She implores and sends him to help her by placing him in the starting village story line. From there he encounters the future hero and tries to guide him while hoping to save the villagers.

About the MC

For anyone who is used to CNovels, MC must seem very indecisive, weak, and prone to as we call it brain holes. For people who are used to reading shoujo novels or manga especially from the 80's and 90's era, like Sailor Moon and or other clutzy dense protagonist, you will feel very familiar with this MC. This novel is probably geared towards a younger audience. I am not the target audience for this novel so my perspective will be coloured by this. MC is a very caring protagonist who takes in all the worries and self blame. Without guidance from the Goddess, he has to discern how to act and ponder whether his actions will have worse consequences for the future of the villagers. He worries quite a lot and tends to overthink. As of the latest chapter I've read, the author has not written character development for him. What I mean is that there is very little to no personal growth to see him mature and grow in inner strength so far. That's not to say there might not be in the later chapters but I must say that progression and groundwork need to be laid in the early chapters to show that gradual change and so far I have not seen any actual signs of growth. Others around him will support him and encourage him but he learns and relearns the lesson again and again of trying to trust people, ask for help when he needs it and try not to take everything in.

He's also very unaware of how he is perceived by others. He sees himself as a humble existence and this is not exactly just a matter of low self-esteem but also culturally how some Japanese writings will characterize people to show their humility, purity (in being unaware of how they are perceived so there is no pride), and goodness. For people who come from a western background, this characterization may grate on the nerves or cause one to question why is the MC like this. Just know that this is a very common shoujo protagonist archetype and it's there to express their detachment from baser instincts in a way. Someone unsullied by the world so to speak.

When looking at his actions, to be honest, there are a lot of ways he could have done things differently from a strategic perspective, but then I remember he was just in his late teens about to apply for a job so I'm trying to dial back my expectations.

His character may have more charm and cuteness for readers who have no problem with this type of characterization. I would say that while I've had my time reading 80's and 90's shoujo, those times are over for me hence I am not very enthused about his characterization. But I think as long as you enjoy it, go for it and read this novel.

About the ML

ML is a hardworking, lone wolf, and distanced from most people. He's most at home in the Church with the other kids and the good people he works with as well as with MC. With MC, he can show his fragile side and also feel insecure at times. He really loves and cherishes MC very much and initiates most of the intimate moments they have in the novel, of which there are many many scenes... Let's face it, some of you are here for the snoo snoo :D. Some people who know CNovel would say he's like a loyal dog archetype. Sometimes very sunny, sometimes big bad wolf. He has an early sense that there's something off about MC but always withholds his questions while silently observing. He's very caring to those around him but always holds few possessions as if ready to depart or cut ties with anyone. In some ways he sees himself as someone rootless until he encounters MC. MC becomes his home and true connection to the world he lives in.

Why I rated this novel lower than others

Well, probably part of the issue is myself. I am too old to read this so the many many shoujo tropes grate on me. I also question many of the actions MC made and his lack of character growth. Even by Japanese shoujo standards, I find the way MC is written to be too weak. The author expresses all of his insecurities and his clumsiness but even when he is trying to be strong, it still feels weak. He needs more complexity than a constant repetition of the same problems over and over again every chapter. It makes his characterization single note only. Also the monologues don't add to his character, but only further reemphasize the same problem he faces for years in the novel. Like I get it author, you want to humanize him, you want to write he is imperfect, but you've gone so far the other way he seems like a nervous wreck in every chapter. He also imposes his personal cultural differences onto ML sometimes by getting mad at his actions when actually it's a cultural difference of the worlds. Living in a different world and then expecting ML to adhere to his world's values is completely tone deaf to reality. Instead of addressing those differences and adapting, he just reacts as if he never learns to integrate with the world or does so grudgingly while always judging people's actions based on his original values instead of trying to understand the cultural differences. Of course I get that this novel is not trying to be a literal masterpiece. Still I find with many novels that deal with "otherness" or different cultures, it falls short of truly addressing them in a way that has nuance and respect for differences. Instead like here, it's boiled down to weird descriptions of intimacy that are uncomfortably described. Even as an Asian myself, I found culture shock when I lived in Europe. I was not used to hugging people and or kissing people on the cheeks as a greeting. But after awhile, I learned to understand the culture around me and adapt to these differences. There are no s*xual undertones of greetings but somehow the author has added a spin to these common interactions that makes it somewhat pe*verted sometimes. I mean I don't know why they had to do that but I found it uncomfortable to read because that is not how western greetings are intended to feel. Granted some of their characters are very inappropriate but why are there only descriptions of weird pe*verted interactions and not that of normal ones? Once again I need to dial down my expectations of what I'm expecting since the goal of this novel is more the romance and the preventing catastrophe mission.

TL:DR

If you'd like to read a shy, dense, sweet, a little tsundere, and caring MC with a loyal dog, big bad wolf ML with sweet interactions with the background of MC trying to prevent catastrophe from happening to the town, this novel is for you. There's lots of fluffy, sweet, and snoo snoo moments. If you love 80's and 90's shoujo stories, this is right up your ally. If your taste does not align with it, try it but you may come to similar conclusions as I do. Turn your brain off when reading. Just enjoy the moments. <<less

It is again one of those smuts where I don't know wether I should consider as r*pe truthfully or what. I've read several of this type where the seme is so forceful to the point where readers will consider it as raping the bottom but then the bottom won't give much struggle and eventually gives in. So I had no idea if it should be r*pe or consensual. I MEAN IF YOU LIKE IT DON'T FUSS ABOUT IT AND IF YOU TRULY HATE IT THEN STRUGGLE EVEN IF YOU DIE.... more>> R*pe victims should say "Help" and not think of satisfying the offender. THIS IS WHY READERS ARE SO CONFUSE-I MEAN ME. <<less

It's cute. The characters aren't rly complex. And even though darker themes are mentioned, the story isn't one to be taken too seriously.

BUT mostly I want to issue Caution for chapters 18-21, Drugging and Attempted r*pe, IF your triggered by s*xual Assault writings, esp. Poor Handling of r*pe Victims, PLEASE read this spoiler b4 u read.
Spoiler

>MC is drugged with an aphrodisiac that also leaves him weak. MC is a MINOR at this time.
>A character who is introduced a little bit before ch.18, who is an adult in a military position of power, attempts to r*pe the MC after drugging him.
>A secondary character, also an adult in a military position of power, supplied the drugs and leaves the room knowing the MC will be r*ped.
>MC fights off the rapist and gets away, before any penetration occurs.
>MC runs to the ML for help. The MC is still aroused as a result of the aphrodisiac, so ML jacks him off. The consent in this situation is Dubious, but it is framed as essential and non-threatening.
>ML reports the matter to some military officials in a different squad, and the Rapist and his accomplice are punished and MC does not face them again.
>It is also revealed, the MC's father allowed the meeting to happen and was paid for it. BUT he did not know MC would be r*ped, he assumed MC was being recruited. He feels guilty and basically obeys w/e his MC asks of him from that point.
>ML asks for pardon for his father, misunderstanding and under the belief his father was sex-trafficking children. This is not true.
>Something also important: ML lies when reporting the matter, he reports the r*pe did occur. He did this without asking MC. This was done so to keep the MC from being married off to anyone, selfishly.
>How the MC was talked about in regards to the (assumed) assault was disgusting and horrible, and it was right in front of him. I would Highly recommend anyone sensitive to s*xual assault topics AVOID this.
>I want to make a point to say: Being sexually assaulted, does not dirty the victim or 'ruin' them. This is sadly a common misconception, that is both false and evil frankly.

>TLDR; this section handles an attempted r*pe and the aftermath. While the victim is given justice, how the r*pe victim is described as a result of the (believed) r*pe, IS HORRIBLE.

I was so hooked so I read the rest with MTL. The climax that I had been waiting for wasn't as exciting as I expected it to be but it wasn't disappointing either. I was really cautious with the r*pe tag since it wasn't my thing but when that scene happened, it didn't look like the MC was forced at all. Well at least for me.

Spoiler

MC has already realized his feelings for the ML for some time already. If any 'force' thing happened, it was only the ML 'forcing' the MC to tell him honestly if the MC also loves him.

[collapse]

I really enjoyed reading it but I only rated it 4 stars because after the climax, everything died down. It seems the author only wanted to focus on the 'dark future' that the MC had been diligently working on to prevent. So after it ended, the rest of the game's original story was just briefly narrated literally like: "We went here, we encountered a monster and we fortunately, we defeated it!"

I was really looking forward how they would defeat the final boss so I honestly didn't like how the author just rushed the rest of the story with a brief narration.

Nevertheless, it checks all the list of a novel I'm looking for:

✔️ Transmigration

✔️ Older Uke Younger Seme (At least mentally)

✔️ No r*pe (In my own view)

✔️ Happy Ending

✔️ SMUT SMUT SMUT

Go ahead and judge me but there are a lot of good novels out there but they are always lacking of smut! It's disappointing but it doesn't mean I am fine with JUST smut alone. It's just that for me, the best novel I'm looking for has to have a heartfelt plot with a smoking hot smut.

Anyway, except the rushed and a bit of boring ending, everything else is great in this novel. It's still a good read for me. <<less

I love love LOVE this novel so much. The thing I love the most about this novel tho is the MC. He’s easily one of the best MCs I’ve ever read along with MXDX’s Wei Wuxian n FOD’s Zhou Yun Sheng. He’s so precious, loving and caring to the point it’s painful. His personality makes you want to steal him away from the ML cuz he’s just that lovely but the ML will probably kill us before we can take a step closer to him? The MC is also very... more>> hard working n genuinely worries about the ML n the village he’s staying in n not just for the game n stuff like that. His past life n thoughts will bring tears to ur eyes. N the chemistry between the ML n MC will make u drool n have major nose bleeds. Their personalities compliment each other very well n the ML see the MC as a kitten cuz Lian (MC) is the tsundere type. Anyway it’s a definite must read. N the side characters r also very cute. Oh n everyone loves the MC I mean who wouldn’t, he’s such a beautiful boy with the kindest heart. Ugh I have a major MC syndrome??? <<less

MC getting sexually assaulted by the shitty knight captain, as he did escape & assaulter got his ass beaten for the attempt

[collapse]
. However, there were some things that unsettled me. I reached the part they finally hooked up, but I was left feeling a bit uneasy and questioned if I should continue or drop it while I still have some good feelings about the series. I came back to novel updates to check to see if it gets better, and after reading D1nko's comment, I've decided to drop this series.

What was good about it:

The translation- 5/5 absolutely lovely. Had no issues understanding anything. Well done.
The premise - Was interested by the isekai idea of literally just tryna help a hero get past the starting village.
The fluff - when there were fluff moments, they were done pretty well.
Handling sad topics- nicely done. Cant think of much to say without spoiling.

The meh about it:

Mc's acting- like, really. The MC himself states that he sucks at it and he wasn't kidding.
Everyone's obsession with mc- I dont mind the occasional creepy fan of MC or ML in a story, but in this story it was uncomfortable how many people were drooling over the MC. This can work in a story where MC has the personality trait where he uses his looks to his advantage, but here it comes off as awkward since MC doesnt really see it. I get "hey cutie, can you help me find my puppy?" vibes and I hate it.

The Bad:

Mc's family- WTF.
Spoiler

Father tries pimping out his underage son to a pe*vert, the brother literally has a nosebleed fantasizing bout his lil bro, and even the fricking grandpa wants to treat MC like a caged canary.

[collapse]
I will reiterate, seriously, WTF. In adition to the spoiler, MC is hella uncomfortable around his family all the time. I know its a story, but dang, this is the first time i've wanted to call CPS for a fictional character. (Seriously, butler is great. He's the only redeeming quality of mc's family, and the coachman.)
Dubcon- Look, I wont lie, I do find dub con in fiction kinda nice. It's fiction. However, what I didn't like here was ml's disregard of mc's opinion/well-being to satisfy himself. D*ck move. Don't try to puppy-dog eyes your way past the consent boarder. It's not cute, its concerning. <<less

I'm sorry, but I'm major angry, disgusted and fuming so I am spoiling this particular character for all your mental healths :

Schwede. One of the Archbishops R/L hand man with highest power cuz of course a church has the highest power thanks to religion. But no, that's not my point.

Point is: Schwede believes in his Goddess so much that he even DRUGS, KIDNAPS, SHACKLES, CONFINES AND GAS LIGHTS UKE IN A TOWER LIKE RAPUNZEL. UKE WHO IS STILL A TEENAGER AT MOST.

He doesn't listen to whatever Uke has to say,... more>> believes the Goddess' oracle is THE MOST ABSOLUTE IN THE WORLD, and calls uke "angel" JUST CAUSE AND DOESN'T KNOW RESPECT AND BOUNDARIES.

I got baited by the book cover. I was expecting something funny. However, the actual story is anything but funny (tried too hard but fail). I really tried to keep reading but it got to the point where I can't stand the MC anymore. The writing style is so passive and contains too many unnecessary words. I usually avoid 1st person POV and this novel is the reason why. MC is so naive and that doesn't really make sense for a man who has already graduated university. The inner monologue... more>> is excessively long and only adds to show how naive he is. His personality is the typical holy maiden type. The damsel in distress that gets pushed around and just accepts it all.

If this story was written in third person POV, then the storyline would have been much easier to digest. It's hard to enjoy a story when it contains so much rambling inner monologues. <<less

The novel is decent, there are things that I don't like, for instance how shallow the character was and how the story is represented. It's an MC that was constantly talking to himself, stuttering like he's the fragile princess on top of the castle waiting for his destined prince. The cover illustration is very good, too good for a story like this.

I'm not a picky type when reading. So I don't really mind his tsundere character that came out of nowhere.

I really wished that the knight; Schweat-sama (?) Who should be appearing at the end of the game arc (but instead appeared far too early) , to be the 2nd ML. Since he said "how nice that you who don't know anything to receive his love." Somewhere around that line to alfred. Because Lian kept alfred under the shadow and protected (guided) alfred unconditionally.

Damn it LOL that of course can lead to another route such as having a 2nd ML. But nope, the author ditched it. I kinda ship em tho : (

The knight is ofc, handsome and always smile jokingly (making himself like a clown) but will be serious when needed. Im a sucker for this kind of character. He was worried abt Lian from time to time and seem to know what ending was waiting for Lian (which is death, because he got the prophecy from the goddess to protect Lian)

Well, it was a nice read. Not much of a rollercoaster. Mostly heartwarming (?).

My thoughts on this novel isn't going to bring anything particularly new to the table, but I'm going to have at it anyway.

Nurturing The Hero To Avoid Death has a good storyline. It has an objective, it's gradually leading up to that objective, and there's an actual sense of the plot going somewhere other than having the MC just "survive". It's also nice to see that the MC is actively trying to protect the people in the novel and isn't dismissing them just because he thinks they're fictional characters. In... more>> terms of the romance, the ML and MC have a pretty steady, respectful relationship that is somewhat natural, rather then the instant fall in love you see with other transmigration novels.

However, NHAD fell into the same pits as the other Japanese novels I have read: an absolute Mary Sue (or Gary Sue? Sorry I'm not familiar with the NU terminology) main character, way too much tsundere for it not to be cringe, and enough monologue that I get bored a couple paragraphs in.

There's no way around it. The MC is such a Mary Sue. Everyone adores him, everything he does is self-sacrificial, and he's self-deprecating to the point where even my non-existent self esteem is impressed. I think certain audiences may appreciate this type of character, but I honestly think I'm too old for that demographic. Maybe it's because I'm just jaded and bitter, but every time I read the MC's monologues all I feel is how unrealistic his thought process is.

Which is another issue of mine, the god damn monologues. It's not just the MC, even during the ML's POVs we're treated to paragraphs and paragraphs of their inner thoughts, and I'll be honest with you, most of it is just filler. I don't mind getting a look inside their head now and then, but I don't need to be treated with chapter after chapter of how the ML thinks the MC is the cutest thing on Earth. The first couple of times it was cute, but now I just think "oh god, when is something going to happen to progress the main plot?".

The MC's personality, other than being a Mary Sue, is also getting on my nerves. I'm not saying I hate the "tsundere" type beat. I've read novels with tsundere characters that I absolutely adore, but the difference between them and the MC is that their tsundere characteristics are used sparsely. Enough so that the tsundere is obviously a part of their personality, but not so much that it gets in the way of their rationality. Unfortunately, it sometimes feels like being a Mary Sue and a tsundere is all the MC has going for him, which I just don't like.

I don't mean to be harsh on this novel. I do (mildly) enjoy reading it, and the translation is absolutely fantastic. It has to be one of the best translations of a Japanese novel on this site by far.

But still, it has flaws. I rate it a 3.5/5.0 stars. <<less

Pretty easy read and quit enjoyable when you got some free time. ML is not boring and forgettable like a lot of other novels but I wish there was more interaction between them other than them flirting in a room. Their interaction is very cute and I am glad to see there is actually flirting rather than just jumping into bed.

Now for the critiques...

I thought this was an adventure story about a hero... where is the adventure?

The MC was first introduce as quit competent character that is somewhat physically strong.... more>> Got hugely disappoint later became weak and much like a damsel in distress. Not really a fan of girly male characters that is forced into a stereotype.

Also, I don't think the Arthur took into consideration gravity of attempt r*pe and drugging of a minor... it was brushed over pretty easily. MC doesn't care much for it afterwards. For example, his father literally sold him to these creeps and all he got his a scolding from the MC?...

Currently I am just waiting for the 6 year mark so we can actually get the 'adventure' going. I got it isn't just a couple chapter of a fight and then they settle down at the farm... like... go do something exciting! <<less

I normally don't write reviews for uncompleted novels. In this case though, I'd like to address sth that might play into whether someone will give this a read or not. Of course, the translation isn't even at the halfway mark so it could change.

I'll just put this whole thing in a spoiler. If you don't wanna get spoilered much: in a nutshell, the consent for intimate interaction is questionable, and could be interpreted quite differently from different perspectives. I guess from one of those perspectives, it's cute. I'd slightly tend... more>> towards thinking that rather than the opposite. I've seen better and I've seen worse, so yeah.

As of now, most of their kisses are dubcon/noncon. Now that may just be seen as teasing rather than real sekuhara, but I'd say if an action goes on long enough for someone to vehemently (or so) express their rejection of it physically as well as verbally and it continues in spite of it, that's not appropriate teasing anymore. In this case though, it seems less questionable cause although the MC is quite expressive, he doesn't seem to mind it all that much on some level. So while the ML seems quite pushy, it may (or may not?) still be within the boundaries of appropriate teasing. As for more than kissing, there was some dubcon nonpenetrative play due to the MC being drugged with an aphrodisiac by some as*hole in chapter 19 or 20. He managed to escape to ML but didn't have enough energy left to beat his meat enough times, so ML helped him with that, plus did his own. It was a 2 for 1 deal ( ̄▽ ̄) xD. Seriously, it's sometimes so hard to figure out what to think of consent in eastern web novels. Like, is that "stop it!" meant literally or is it more like they feel like they have to say it or don't have anything else to say so that's what they end up saying? Specifically Japanese content, fockin stop it with the "no~!" if you actually mean "oh yes, give it to me"

(╯°□°) ╯︵┴─┴

Ugh but well, as I said, that can be seen as cute too. Ughhh._. XD Looking at it from a less western standpoint, this is nice and cute. I guess it's up to your point of view if you'll be able to enjoy it xD
