i love it very muchh??

this novel is among the ones that I definitely want to buy a copy if they published the english version. I heard about the drama adaption but im not willing to watch it since it is different compared to the original version and of course the cencorship, and also if the actors are different compared to my imagination while reading, it's gonna spoil my mood for weeks! But this novel is good, I havent read the extras yet but I need to sleep now cause I... more>> got work tomorrow 😭😭😭 <<less

A four stars rating for this novel feels too much at some parts but I cannot shy away from the fact that I love this novel, a lot, much more than I had initially anticipated.

Normally for this type of novel, I will try to be more profound and look at things from a bigger picture, because nothing in this novel is really new anyway. MC and ML’s relationship started from a rocky place (enemy) and slowly and ahem... roughly turn into a lovely Dovey stage and I have to explicitly... more>> say I would even hate it if the author didn’t do that one right thing that completely captivates me.

Before talking about the sole reason I gave it a fours start rating let’s get all the bad things out of the way first.

This novel is very trope-heavy. It’s a romantic love story so It’s bound to be it. The back and forth misunderstanding and the too-late realization are all there and they can get annoying sometimes.
The male lead Yuan Yang is too immature. Some of his actions in this novel should be seriously questioned, my biggest problem about this male character at the end of the day was the lack of his development as a person. I truly believe that the author could have gotten so much more out of him and but didn’t which is such an opportunity missed.

All the things I said above is one part that I seriously dislike about this novel, but some other parts that I like are just so good, so captivating, so beautiful that I still at the end of the day fell head over heel with it.

First, and It might be a personal thing but I am such a sucker for an age gap relationship, especially when the one pursuing is younger. And the author did just the right thing with how these two people view the relationship. Earlier I mentioned, I don’t like the character Yuan Yang, his way of thinking is too young and impulsive and sometimes he came across as a bit naive, but it might be because the way I view this character is directly comparing him to the other lead with is Gu Qingpei, an 11 years older man.

These two characters were written so well with all the flaws, they make me feel they’re real-life people rather than characters in the novel. Gu Qingpei, someone who is so experienced in life, he’s seen enough, he’s very cautious and he knew to think twice and thrice before doing anything, which is a good thing, but can also be a flaw.
Yuan Yang, the younger one, he’s like all of us when we were younger, when we were naive and thought that nothing in life is impossible and that we could get everything we want. Being this persistence is good but let’s face it, the reality is harsh and wishful thinking is also part of his flaw.

These 2 people are in stark contrast to each other, one cares too much and the other cares too little. They compliment each other so beautifully and their sweet moments are just so sweet.

The second and probably the biggest reason I love this novel is Gu Qingpei, This character, the way he looks at life, the way he behaves and reacts to a certain situation. He’s so captivating and I love him so much, so much that sometimes I feel like I only stick through this novel because I want to see his ending and I genuinely want him to be happy for the rest of his life whatever decision he makes. He isn’t just a character from a novel instead he’s like a brother that I just care so much about and I applaud the author for being able to write such a character that left this huge impression on me.

Overall, even though this novel is very trope-heavy and a lot of things should be questioned, Its well-grounded attitude and fascinating way of depicting characters, are the things that should be complimented.

Maybe I’m just very shallow after all, I love and care about this novel so much, not every bit of it but the part I love is enough for me to overlook the part I don’t, hence the 4 stars rating is very personal. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but It mine, and I freaking love it. <<less

You will like this novel if you like possesive ML's and dont mind non/dub-con. If that moves your boat, this is the novel for you.

Okay, now for my thoughts. Personally, I think meeting Yuan Yang (ML) was Gu Qingpei's greatest misfortune. YY (ML) is the whole package for possesive ML. R*pe, coercion, kidnapping, stalking, basically doing everything he can to make sure he can control GQP (MC). The only thing ML didn't do was hit GQP. He reeks of possesiveness and childishness and has no respect for the independence and... more>> autonomy of GQP.

Spoiler

Note the time-skip tag. Honestly, I was hoping the ML would mature and reflect on what he did before, and that they could have a healthy relationship. But nope, after GCP (MC) returns, its the same thing all over again. ML taps his phone, follows him to his home and work, kidnaps him, r*pes him again. I might've enjoyed this novel more, but the possessiveness and level of stalking was too much. It hit too close to reality, and if GQP were a real person he would need all the help he could get to get away from this crazy person. I've seen too many people in GQP's situation and the feeling of not being able to get away from someone is truly scary.

[collapse]

Basically, the ML's whole personality is childishness and possesiveness, which doesn't change throughout the novel.

Spoiler

A small comfort is that he gave up a lot to be with GQP (MC), s/a his family. However, I feel he didnt suffer enough by the time they got back together. His guilt for the video just wasn't enough for me.

[collapse]

As for the MC, I was too busy feeling bad for him to be able to get a good grasp on his personality. I do feel that he's three-dimensional though. He was just a person with ambitions living his life, trying to advance in his career. He's not a completly good person; he holds his grudges and is two-faced when doing business. But he's not a bad person either. <<less

This is an absolutely great novel and wonderful translation, too. I like Years of Intoxication (both novel and Manhua) but this is even better! The character development is deep, the plot is clever and realistic, and just enough of heart quenching moments to drive you crazy. Both MC and ML really both grew up through out the story despite their own issues.

if you are hesitant to red this, you really should give this a try. The plot and context are refreshing and clever. For now, I will move to the... more>> 3rd installment of this shared universe of novels. The author now has become one of my favourites of all time along with MXTX. <<less

I liked it, the ending was satisfying after all the angst. 4.5/5, points off because it got a bit repetitive with the push and pull. The plot revolves around one controversial issue, which didn't get wrapped up until the end. I was hoping the author would close that and move the plot to some other main drama. GQP and YY are memorable characters. YY ruthlessly pursued GQP and refused to give him up. 11 yrs younger, we did see YY mature over the 3 yrs from a brat to a... more>> man. I really loved that YY never wavered on his dedication to GQP, sure his ways are questionable and brutal, but he is military man, so I gave him a pass. Both lead had communication issues, if they talked abt their feelings, the book would be a lot shorter and happier. GQP being older is a lot more level headed and his entire world was turned upside down by YY. He was really hesitant to love YY (fair enough), but ultimately admitted to him feelings. Mix in with parent drama and the usual gay panic brings us to the end. The epilogues were great, wish it was longer because they are finally not fighting and harmoniouss. There are quiet a bit of sexy scenes, wouldn't mind more. Was the plot believable? Yes. I can imagine this is how two stubborn male bosses falls in love in a society they isn't that same-s*x friendly. It took them a long time to get to their happy ending, but still a worthy read. Get pass the first 26 chapters, it really get better and better from there. <<less

I know it's a bit early for a review when I'm not halfway through but, I just don't know. The seme is so flipping annoying to the point I actually want to stop reading. This has never happened before. I like these type of enemies become lovers stories but this one is different.

The seme is simply a flipping child about everything through and through. The way he's trying to get the uke is through whining and forceful behavior like sleeping in the nap room when the uke tells him he... more>> can't. If he doesn't want to move, then you are defeated. It's constantly like that so far. Every interaction is a fight and it's exhausting to read.

His unprofessionalism is through the roof. The way he interferes with the ukes during business hours is so annoying to read. He'll force him to stop working just so he can get his way to make the uke do something and it doesn't even have to be sexual. It's usually something mundane. I'm coming out of my skin over all these s*upid little things. They just keep adding up and it's too much.

His s*xual harassment during work hours isn't even enjoyable and that's one thing I would enjoy normally. His jealousy isn't even cute like it should be. It comes out of left field and he's so paranoid all the time.

I liked their relationship better before they starting having s*x to be honest. Once they start the s*xual relationship, it turns into all the stuff I said above with the mixture of a child looking for a parents attention. He turns from this military masculine type man to this clingy insecure child making threats. He's always telling the uke that he can't refuse and that's his argument. He just says it as fact without anything to back it up. I can't bring myself to like the seme at all and that's hard for me.

The nsfw is hot too and the story is fun and I like that but the seme is ruining the story for me and I'm surprised at myself. Hopefully it will get better but I'm actually forcing myself to read this at this point. I don't even know if I explained myself right because I am really at a loss. <<less

Honestly I found it really interesting at first...I felt it was different in the sense that the ML is not perfect& the MC is more accomplished... but I find the MC too cold hearted... the ML is a bit childish but his sincerity is really touching...... more>>
Spoiler

he was ready to leave everything, even his family inheritance, all his friends even his future for the MC but the MC is always only concerned for his own future even after the two years gap there was only snatches of his thoughts where he feels bad & seeing the MC & his gf together he's so cool over it...I get that his more mature but maturity has nothing to do with love... if u really love a person u will always be influenced by them...& When the ML asks if whether he had s*x wid anyone during that time he actually had...I mean the MC whole angst is shown... everyone thinks the ML is overbearing... but does no one see how deep his love his...I mean he losses much more then the MC... the truth is v can find ppl lk MC everywhere in reality... to find someone who is willing to give up literally everything for u lk the ML is really rare

Overall story is not too bad, it's a type of enemies/rivals to lovers tale. The MC is honestly what saved the whole story for me.

He reacts in a pretty realistic manner to the *extremely* controlling and insane ML. I really enjoyed the MC's personality, struggles, development, and general decision-making. Some of the drama is too contrived but there are enough redeeming moments to the story that the relationship in the end is pretty good.

I'm also happy to read about a non-ice-prince ML for once. The rivalry, anger, fighting between the... more>> main characters makes the relationship very unique and explosive. I prefer this to an over-romanticized ML who is perfect.

Spoiler

The ML is so far from perfect, it's actually a bit endearing because of that. However, his extremely spoiled, childish, possessive, forceful, blind selfishness really knows no bounds. The MC is a saint to put up with him.

The ML does redeem himself somewhat with his unwavering emotions... but I would definitely reconsider this if that's not the type you like. He completely crossed my bottom line (and the MC's bottom line) a huge bunch of times.

[collapse]

The translation starts off pretty good but deteriorates quite heavily over time. I wouldn't recommend if you don't understand at least a bit of Chinese (there were a lot of parts where I had to re-translate the sentences back into Chinese for them to make sense).

The smut is very creative/detailed but there's a lot of non-con/r*pe and dub-con kidnapping/controlling etc. which is not everyone's cup of tea (I found myself skipping most of it). <<less

Actually, came bit late to this gem after readin some comments. Yeah, that YY really pain in the *ss. So I felt you, all of the readers and reviewers who gave one and two stars.

I gave 4.5/5 cos I like that YY behind that overbearing, rough, possesive, narrow minded exteriors, he was the first that stood tall and still in the relationship. He spiced up (also messed up, haha) GQP steady and monotone life. I love how naive he was, and his fiery love for GQP.

I love GQP, for his... more>> maturity and patience toward YY. That stubborn YY was an emotional challenge to the nerve (me as a reader really wanna smack his face in some chaps). I think GQP bit masochism, for some YY words and deeds kinda hurtful.

Of course the steamy juicy love was goood. Well proportioned to the plot. And the plot also elaborated. Got hooked already at first chap.

it was rough start, with many bumps in the middle and happy at the ending. RELIEVED and HAPPY for their finally put down their barrier, and say the magic word L O V E

Just NO. NOPE. NOOO.

(FYI read and watched it 2 to 3 years ago, I was just scrolling to find a novel and saw this again and wanted to leave a review)

My problem lies both with the novel and drama. Watched the drama 1st and thought "ah there's no way they going to brush off the whole took a video that's basically MC being r*ped by ML, and ML freaking showed it to his own freaking father as blackmail material right" boy was I wrong

It was a lot worst.... more>> The story was basically throwing different type of r*pe at you like it's freaking food.

I don't think that there was even one s*x scene that was not r*pe.

Even 'Are you Addicted?' Didn't have the different type amount of r*pe this novel had.

I hope this novel burns in he'll if I could ill give it a zero star.

I had faith in the MC to stick his ground but sadly I was wrong.

The premise is interesting, but the characters are entirely uncharming and the story is ridiculous. I really don't understand how this is a love story from any angle. Their entire relationship is based on repeated r*pe, s*xual harassment, and confinement. From beginning to end, I can count the number of consensual encounters and one hand. The only plausible explanation is MC has Stockholm Syndrome and ML doesn't know the difference between obsession and love.

EDIT: Almost half a year since I first read it, and while I still don't think it's the author's best work, it's become a real regular comfort read for me. Most books I just read once for the plot and romance and don't bother to re-visit, but there's just something about gu Qingpei and Yuan Yang that makes me come back again and again. I just love their dynamic, how they go from enemies to a weird sort of 'friends with benefits', to gradually falling in love but being in... more>> hardcore denial for practical and psychological reasons, to really admitting their mutual feelings, and then to be forced to go through all sorts of angst and pain, partly due to external pressure, partly due to their own stubbornness, obsessions, and personal flaws.

Yuan Yang is my guilty pleasure - yes, objectively he's awful and there's no excuse for his actions, but the way he falls for the MC and the way he slowly comes to realize it, and sets out to pursue his lover with every possible mean - he just feels so real, and his flaws only make him more endearing.

Gu Qingpei: he's such a complex character, very atypical shou - I love how he slowly falls deeper and deeper, pushed by YY every step of the way, but all the time he knows that he could - and should - take a step back and disengage, but he just can't help his own attraction and makes all kinds of excuses for himself until it's too late.

-

*Giving this 4 stars because it's a popcorn kind of book, but entertaining to read*

Don't read this if you can't stomach toxic relationships and scummy MLs. The tags are accurate. Don't read and then come back to complain about the noncon and dubcon. If you paid the slightest attention to tags and reviews, you knew what you were going into. This book belongs to the 188 series, where scum gongs treat the shou horribly, get dumped, and then do everything they can to win their lover back. Is it healthy? No. Is it fun to read about for those who enjoy scum gongs and dog blood? Yes.

To be honest, I skipped a lot in the first handful of chapters, because the business setting didn't interest me much and the ML annoyed me a bit with his extremely aggressive attitude. However, the MC and ML starts getting it on quite early, and after that it was a fun read.

Read this simultaneously with Professional Body Double. The latter had a more intriguing premise with the rebirth thing, while Beloved Enemy is much more straight forward. However, I enjoyed the MC and the couple dynamic a lot more in this. The MC is a cool guy. Like the MC in PBD he's a bit older and way more mature than the typical MC shou. He's open to casual s*x, honest with a good work ethic and dedicated to his job. The MC is a former army brat who has been neglected by his parents growing up, and how now run wild with a bad attitude. He's forced by his father to take the MC as his business mentor, and does everything he can to get out of it.

The ML is this is really scummy, yet somehow also quite endearing. He falls hard and fast, and I like that it doesn't take him that long to stubbornly pursue the MC despite how much he disliked him before, and to acknowledge his feelings and fight for his relationship early on. The MC also falls fast - despite his aloof attitude and realistic assessment that he and the ML are unlikely to last and that getting into a relationship with a much younger guy who's also his boss' son is a pretty bad idea. Yet when he develops feelings for the ML, he's also honest with himself about it.

The relationship is a real enemies-to-lovers story. Hot, angry s*x in the beginning (and later as well), delicious s*xual tension when the couple fight and hate each other, but still have sizzling chemistry. The story also doesn't drag when the CP finally resolve their issues and get together - something I felt was a bit of an issue in Professional Body Double.

It's also a story of how the ML grows from a brat with anger issues to a nicer (but still not what you'd call healthy) and more mature person. The ML does some pretty terrible things, and it's a wonder that the MC decides to forgive him, but I guess that's the power of love.

About the noncon:

Spoiler

This story has the trope "r*pe but the victim enjoys it". It doesn't glorify the r*pe, but neither does the writer point fingers at the ML or punish him for basically raping the MC several times. The MC is honest with himself about actually enjoying it a lot each time, and the main issue between him and the ML was the ML's dishonesty and the fact that he secretly filmed the MC and causes him to lose his job and be humiliated because of his carelessness. If you can't stomach this type of story, do yourself a favor and don't read it.

I actually really enjoyed this novel - it was riveting, a guilty pleasure & smutty.

BUT BEFORE YOU READ - check the tags. I'm OK with all the dark themes so it was really enjoyable for me. I especially enjoy reading yandere/possessive MLs, which Yuanyang definitely was.

This novel even had me in tears at some points, because the MC had to suffer a lot (and I do think the ML suffered too).

The plot is very well written, however, it just had too much angst for me.

First of all, their relationship is toxic no matter how you see it. It is just that MC knows how to handle ML that their relationship was somewhat stable.

If not of some elements of ticking bomb that made it their relationship somewhat worse would their relationship be viewed as tolerable.

However I do enjoy this novel as both male leads keep on taking advantage with each other. It's very interesting as they have egos and prides that would not let them be easily defeated when going at each other.

I would say... more>> that MC and ML have some character growth just that they do not grow for their situation to get better. The conflict here is pretty heavy so read this with open mind and heart as some moments can be pretty frustrating.

I recommend that if you readers want to read this. Remember that the romance is not a pretty one. Whether you support them or not is up to you, but really I only liked the conflict the story has. <<less

Reading this novel does make watching the TV drama by the same name more enjoyable. Rosyspell team did a great job with the translation as usual. I do love novels with older uke / younger, bossy semes. What irks me the most about most of these author's work is her ukes are a tad bit too whiny, indecisive, loves to jump to conclusions on their own that results in tons of unnecessary, frustrating misunderstanding. Overall still a good read though.
