He was confused, so he asked, “I have a car, a house, good-looks and money. What am I lacking in?”

She replied, “All those attributes are what men use to lure mistresses. So, which of those attributes is a good characteristic?”

Ashamed, he reflected, “I am loyal to one and I can host and cook. I can make the bed and accompany you when you wish to go out.”

She replied bitterly, “I shall, reluctantly, accept you then.”

Good men would not let the women they love fight with the mistress but get rid of them on their own.

First, I'd like to thank the translator for doing an amazing job, then I'd like to thank the author for taking their time to write this novel.

I give this author props for delving into a mostly unchartered territory that is not seen much on web novels. But, there's a fine line between strength (and s*upidity). Even if the author was trying to portray a logical and more real MC, I feel like they failed to merge the character settings with the logic.

There's no way a man can show you his... more>> heart and provide for you in every possible way and not be moved by him. This MC failed to deliver reciprocity in the way the ML doted on and pampered her. Keeping in mind this is not a scum man, but, a good man, honestly the MC did not deserve him.

I've dropped this since, there's no plot and there's no basis of love to keep me reading this. It might be for someone else but clearly not for me. <<less

This novel is just mediocre. I can't believe it'd be the same author as Eight Treasures Trousseau and To Be A Virtuous Wife. It should be another author with the same name. I'm serious... there must be a mistake.

I don't like this author's extremist life views. Women are equal to men, not superior. She makes the female lead extremely feminist. Other female characters admire and sing her praises as if that makes her very unique; it's indeed very unique to be so selfish.

The female lead is supposed to be smart... more>> and independent, and have a high EQ (being a romance novel author!). Yet she proves to be the exact opposite:

Spoiler

How can she not realise the ML likes her? Even if in a roundabout way he said no, but his actions definitely show he does. It is obvious to everyone else but her. She accepts so many favours from him while feigning ignorance. And is so happy and shameless when accepting free things without giving much in return 'cause she herself says she's stingy. Hello? Did you forget you were "smart" and "independent"?

[collapse]

One type of people that really annoys me is the one that complains a lot. And she complains about everything and is hardly ever satisfied! She's always testing the ML and expecting him to prove himself, without feeling the need to reciprocate in any way. It's fine if he treats her well, why would she put in any effort for him? I understand and agree with the way she treats her ex-boyfriend; but why does she act like ML owes her something??!? She's also really lazy and neglectful. He brings the money in the house AND does all household chores! Who doesn't want to just live comfortably, but that's too shameless!!!
Spoiler

When he proposed he said he won't request anything from her and he'll do anything she wants! And of course she agreed with this. WTF!!! A relationship involves 2 ppl, it's not one way!

[collapse]
It can't just be one person that puts in all the effort! There's honestly not much to like about her, so I don't think such a character like the ML would like someone like the fl. The author is gravely mistaken if she thinks an adoring s*ave will come knocking if she keeps acting like a queen.

I do hope we actually get a reason as to why he started liking her from back in university, otherwise, she doesn't really leave a good impression on me from her interactions with ml. Edit: Yeah, no, after reading abt it, there's no reason really. This story is just delusional. <<less

Hm, I feel like I should rate this highly and praise it for having a truly strong female lead and a caring male lead. But honestly? The female lead calculated love like it was an emotion that could be dispensed after praiseworthy actions from the ML, and the male lead was... too good to be true?

It wasn't melodramatic and there was no scheming, but after a while it became stale. Their interactions never exceeded the FL being cool and calm and the ML showering her with his love. There's a... more>> fine line between being cool-headed in love and protecting your heart, and treating love like an equation that can be solved after X number of good things have been done for you. A little more emotion and perhaps a few less chapters would have improved this in my mind. Having said that, it's a nice change from the usual Chinese webnovels, if a bit heavy handed in its message. <<less

I think this one isn't for me. Su Le should be a relatable FL but for me she just comes across as boring af.

The ML is the only character I kind of like because he seems like a big dog, but I end up feeling sorry for him because she's just so... Bland. Why on Earth does he like her??

The (lack of) plot isn't really important to me, since I tend to prefer character driven stories, but when the characters AND the plot are lacking... Does is even hold up?

Not... more>> for me. <<less

It's a nice novel, well written and translated. Not scheming and no drama, kind of a slice of life.

The reason this novel only gets three stars though is because of the main character, a lover of strong independent women who calls herself as such.

Unfortunately, she just seems to bully the male lead and be basically useless the entire way through.

... more>> The male lead is perfect, spoils her and loves her, does anything and everything for her without even telling her.

The only 'good' points she seems to have is that she's respectful, doesn't overreact and doesn't want to spend his money.

I feel like she reminds me of one of those hypocritical feminists who is all about 'independence' but also needs to have a man, who pays for all meals, drives them everywhere, does all the chores and they're actually just there for decoration. And everyone everywhere just seems to praise her for it too.

Additionally, the antagonists don't have any depth, and seem to be stereotypical mean overdramatized fools which in comparison to her seem foolish but their actions don't seem to fit what has already been revealed about them. <<less

I think this novel has a higher rating than it deserves. I've read some reviews before I started it and Maybe I expected a lot?

What I don't like the most is definitely the female lead. I don't even get what's her merit? Why does the ML like her so much ? SHE is bland, doesn't really reciprocate his feelings, and like another review said 'she acts like she owes him something', she wants the ML to do everything for her!! While she receives it shamelessly.

What does she know to do... more>> ? 'Being strong and not like the other the females in novels' (not my words)

And ofc we have that ML who knows how to do everything, cook and do the dishes, take care of the house while the female lead eats melon seeds and watch TV. Tsk tsk pretty unrealistic huh <<less

It was pretty good. What I didn't like about this story was the way the MC acted. She could have shown some more emotions and really showed that she liked the ML, but no she was always completely calm and acting like it has nothing to do with her. Like someone else said, it does seem like she acts like the ML owes her something with the way she treats him. As much as the author and others kept mentioning that she wasn't the prettiest and her other flaws, I... more>> absolutely believe the ML could have done way better and found someone that will actually show emotions to him and really reciprocate his love. Also it did feel like she was calculating her emotions/love like it was math or something. The relationship was just too one sided. I feel like she only got with him cuz he treated her well and I don't like that. Despite all of that it was still a good read when you get past the brick of a MC. <<less

I dropped this.

For me, the MC's not likable at all. While some may find it admiring that she was able to get over her ex cheating on her quickly, I found it unrealistic and actually felt some sympathy for the ex because it looked like he wasted away years with an unfeeling robot.

She's an author of romance novels, and she repeatedly states how much she detests weak protagonists. Sure weak protagonists are annoying to read about, but "strong" characters like her are equally annoying to read about, too. Being unemotional... more>> and cold does not mean someone is strong IMO. A frail character can be strong as long as they are able to overcome obstacles.

In addition, she's an author of romance novels, but I find it completely unrealistic that she seems oblivious to the ML's flirting. The ML chases after her relentlessly, and I still don't understand why he does so? There are millions of girls out there. Rich, beautiful, and kind-hearted - the ML can have any of them, but instead, he chooses to chase after an unfeeling girl who just takes and takes. A relationship is based on two partners, not one partner giving away everything and the other taking away everything. It's just so unrealistic to see him chasing after her without her giving him anything (i.e cooking for him, buying him gifts, and showing him support.) <<less

This author is really amazing. I feel that her novels always teaches me something new, like a new mindset. I really learn quite a lot just by reading Eight Treasure Trousseau and this novel, Hello Wife.

What attracted me to read this novel at first was how the plot sounds interesting, the reviews and that it is the same author as Eight Treasure Trousseau. What made me want to continue to read this novel is because I totally respect and agree with the mindset of the female lead. The mindset and... more>> the actions of the female lead is very respectable. I honestly feel like I learnt a new lesson based on the decisions she made.
Spoiler

For example, when the woman who stole her ex boyfriend always tried to look for trouble with her, she always stayed calm and wasnt angry.

Another example would be a phrase that was stated in the novel where it goes along the line that “As woman, we don’t need to live on men.” Honestly, this phrase is something that I agree very much on. This is because I think even after a breakup, it is not the end of the world. Yes, you may be sad, disappointed or even angry but is it worth it? I think anyone can just climb back up and live on their lives and embrace new opportunities other than love to have the happiness that you want.

[collapse]

In this novel, I think there is not much romance in my opinion. It is mostly the male lead chasing the female lead, which is super sweet and dreamy in my opinion. When they are together, I think it is not much of a new romance blooming but it is like the romance of an old couple that are together for a very long time. This relationship is based on trust and respect for each other. The trust summarised most of the chapters
Spoiler

When there was a love rival appeared where a woman who liked the male lead for a long time appeared, the female lead still acted very calmly. After that, she had to go on a trip for a signing event for her novels, in the plane she has sudden random thoughts and worries for whether the male lead would have a change of heart. But quickly, she told herself that there is no point in worrying about that and what is done would be what is done. She would only need to go back to face it and solve it. And she trust him this once.

I think this part is very memorable and very true in my opinion. If the male lead were to have a change of heart, the only thing she can do is face it. It taught me that if you trust someone, you should just stick to that decision and if something goes wrong just clean it up and there is no point in overworrying.

[collapse]

In conclusion, I would recommend this novel to anyone that is looking for a change where it is not the typical weak girl with her fragile mindset but a female lead with a strong, practical and logical mindset. I think this novel brings out a lot of new “teachings”. However, I would not recommend this novel to someone who is looking for very intense and passionate romance novels. <<less

To me, this is just a passable novel to read. As compare to author's "To be a virtuous wife", this has less drama to it.

Overall, it's a cute novel where ML chase after MC for years. Although, I feel that ML could have selected a better girl to be the MC. I feel that MC is treating ML like a s*ave. :/

Am I the only one who finds it uncomfortable that the ML causes the MC to unwittingly betray all of her professed feminist ideals by secretly interfering in her career? And isn't it deceptive to get her to fall in love with this big facade of his that's very different from how everyone else knows him in real life? It's also not nice that he's always lying about his intentions and manufacturing situations to get them together. How would it look if her ex came up with similar excuses to... more>> win her heart while pretending that he wants to remain "friends"? <<less

I truly captivated by this novel. It's such a good plot. It potrays a story about a strong woman and a loyal pursuer of her. It shows that women are independent and don't need a man to control their lives. I've read three of this author's works and it's all about the strength of a woman. We don't necessarily need love of a man in our lives. Hello Wife is a fluffy and sweet novel but it also removes all the stereotype of cheating boyfriend cliché. Bad breakups. It's about... more>> Su Le (MC) who develops into a more beautiful butterfly than she already is. <<less

Not a huge fan of this one. I'm all for strong female characters, but I don't love the author's perspective on feminism. Her stories tend to go like this: FL inadvertently attracts the attention of ML for one reason or another (usually because she's hot), then ML falls over his feet to keep her happy while said FL sits back leisurely, passively accepting his affection whilst remaining non-committal and contributing very little to the relationship. It works in her period novels where women, by default, have less freedom and liberties,... more>> thus it's almost necessary for men to pull more weight. For modern novels, it feels stale and underwhelming.

The author seems to suggest that any emotional vulnerability or sacrifice in a relationship on the woman's part some sort of sexist personality flaw. Because men should be the ones sacrificing hand and foot to please women? It's a very narrow ideal of what female empowerment should look like, which itself goes against the idea of feminism, a broader notion where gender equality not only improves the lives of women, but men as well. ML does not get that sort of treatment here.

It's great to see social commentary on misogyny, but the execution resulted in a lazy, passive, and indifferent FL. Su Le keeps herself from ever getting hurt by placing herself in bubble and keeping everyone, even her own emotions, at arms length. Yay for self-love, but this not empowerment. It's called conceit and it's digging a hole and sticking your head in it, then letting someone else dig you back out (but then bragging that you were the one who took the initiative to dig that hole in the first place). Empowering women through literature is so much more than just reciting the importance of female independence like a mantra. It involves presenting women as three-dimensional beings, strengths and weaknesses and all, while showing readers that the issues they deal with are just as real as anyone else's.

I don't think I would be so critical of the way Su Le was written had Yue Xia Die Ying not harped on and on about Su Le's god-level feminism. There is no subtlety on this front.. But all said and done, Eight Treasures Trousseau from her remains one of my favorites and I would highly recommend it. <<less

This novel is well written and I really liked it! but it still had some problems.

I understand the intent of the author and the whole theme of the novel "a strong minded woman who was swayed by a loving and caring man", I even understand the personality of the female lead and her reactions and her swelling heart and I really like her character and way of thinking, I have no problems with that, there isn't a single problem with her, she isn't even cold or acts in that way.

The... more>> problem is... the author inserts "social commentary" that's contradictory.

The author wants to emphasise so much that she "doesn't really care if she haves a man or not" that tries with all the might s/he can muster to squash any "misconceptions" you might be having.

The repeated lethargy being hammered over and over of how "she doesn't care" or "she will never put a man above her" undermines the feelings of the female lead, I get it, she's strong, she's charismatic, she's cold headed.

But the extent on which the author tries to placate the feeling that she may be falling for the male lead makes her look cold hearted... and when it's becoming a bit too on the nose, some utterly pointless side character comes and says "you're cold hearted!" only to be shooed away by everyone else... (boooo your opinion is wrong and you should be ashamed)

It's a struggle, because you are painting an image of the character on your mind and the author haves to come in with some utterly pointless opinion regarding her actions that points you towards "Oh but remember, she's strong and cold because she doesn't need a man!, don't forget this! she doesn't need him! at all!, here are some adages to convince you of it!, they have nothing to do with what's happening right now, but here!!! SWALLOW IT!!!"

I don't appreciate getting preached on from a soap box, I don't need someone telling me what is appropriate for me to be feeling, you already explained her point of view and her interactions and actions... I don't need you to say "so because of this you have to be feeling this!"... this reminded me so much of why I hated "Portrait of Dorian Gray" it's the same frikken problem.

I don't like to wrestle with the author for the message I should be taking out of the story, I immediately rejected the drivel the author used to try and justify the notion that "she doesn't need a man" because it's just not needed or even relevant to the plot...

If I was able to edit this novel, I would leave everything from monologues to dialogs to interactions and scrap the frikken authors adages, because it ruins the mood, the rhythm, the story and the whole point of the novel, she ends up not looking like a "strong woman" but as a "b*tch" on some scenes... and if those adages were omitted, this image would have never consolidated anywhere... you ruined the feeling and rhythm author, shame on you!

That being said, I loved the characters and the interactions between them, the story is straightforward, there is a TON of drama, the Female lead deals with it in a classy and proper manner... but I can't shake the feeling that the author loves to pat herself in the back "I'm better cause I don't write a lead that cries" yah, sure... keep stroking your own ego, the amount of times she mentions "dramas" made me laugh, keep comparing your story with a story you didn't even want to write author...

I can feel the anxiety of the author proclaiming "I'm sure I'm better! see!? compare me!!! I'm better... really I swear! look, this other things are ridiculous!!!!!"

I don't know... it felt... desperate??? mmm... whatever, read it! it's good, like chicken soup!, just roll your eyes at the crap the author crammed between the story and keep reading. <<less

I like how MC was strong and independent but the story was kinda stale and boring because MC was bland

Did she even have feelings for ML? Cos all along, it was the ML who expressed how much he loved her, and there was zero response from her. Eh?! Seriously?

She even locked the door on ML while staying over at his place. She's a cold b*tch. No wonder her ex cheated on her.

These were her thoughts after accepting ML's marriage proposal, ""Since she would have to marry sooner or later anyway,... more>> the current situation was good."

I gave it 4/5 because the writing is good and there wasn't too much drama. It's a "nice" sorry, and it's not hard to read.

The problem is that the plot stalls once they start dating. There wasn't much progression after that, so it got boring quickly.

But the main problem is the author's overly idealistic viewpoint on how men and women should act. Personally, I liked Chu Wei's character because he was working hard to convince Su Le to date him. It was Su Le's character that was lacking. Chu Wei... more>> changes himself to match her, which is fine as long as he's not the only one making adjustments. But, I didn't see Su Le even try to do anything to please him or make him happy. A loving man doesn't need to be a lap dog, and a smart, independent woman doesn't need to act like men aren't necessary except to please women and fulfill their obligation to marry.

So, overall it was an easy read with "nice" characters, but it was boring because the MC was too lazy to put effort into her relationship. <<less

I feel complicated about this novel. Although the plot is quite simple, it's not bad. But I don't quite like MC in this novel.

Spoiler

I usually love strong female lead character but MC is not one of them. I don't know what MC's definition of being strong is. It's okay for woman to rely on themselves instead of depending on her man. What I dislike is her attitude towards ML. She's so cold and often heartless although ML already proved enough of his sincerity towards her. She also shamelessly continue to treat ML like her "s*ave" even after their marriage (her friend has a point, why bother doing all chores by themselves when they have enough money to hire a housekeeper). I know ML is willing to be her "s*ave" but MC should be considerate if she really loves ML. But no, she enjoys being a queen. It's not an equal couple should do.

I will update once I progress through the novel.

My initial thoughts:

One or two mentions from the author on how the MC is not the typical female lead that you'd see in melodramas or other web novels usually will suffice but it got tacky when the author mentions it in what felt like every other sentence. Yes, we already got it, thank you! MC comes across very bland and boring thus far. And ML is a little too perfect and boring.

Spoiler

MC was known as a school beauty and was chased by one of the richest and most handsome boys in the school. They dated for several years and he only cheated on her because she wouldn't give it up to him (because a man has needs). When they broke up, she doesn't cry or feel hurt. In fact, she takes it as though it was expected because her mother had warned her that rich and handsome men will only break your heart. This stems from having a father who abandoned their family for another woman.

Having resigned from her job due to a work colleague stealing her work, she's now jobless on top of being boyfriendless and homeless (she was supposed to move in with her boyfriend). But magically, her best friend is a young miss from a rich family so she can stay with her. Also, MC masquerade as an author who writes under a pen name and despite having no job, she has enough money saved if she wanted to buy an apartment or car. Do authors make this much? I'm in the wrong line of work.

ML is 2 years her senior and fell in love with her while they were in college together. Unfortunately, she was pursued by someone else so he lost his chance. MC, of course, have no recollection of ML despite him being the most famous alumni of their college. ML silently stalked her, even knowing her pen name and buys her novels when they come out. When he finds out that MC and her boyfriend broke up, he jumps in to chase her. MC is so oblivious, even the people around her know what's up. He's a dream catch: rich, handsome, dotting, knows how to cook, offers an apartment of his for her to rent for cheap.

MC laments that if ML wasn't so handsome, he would be just her type to the point that ML thinks about getting plastic surgery because he's too handsome. *Vomits*
