5 stars all the way.

Our protagonist is a rare breed in mainstream tales. She's not beautiful nor is she smart. She has no cheats in life. All she has is perseverance and a compassionate heart. She is the abused servant of our main lead, the 2nd Master. We read how he mistreated her and how he disdained her appearance, yet our "Little Monkey" never took them to heart. She stood by him when he became disabled and lost everything. She protected him when no one else was willing to. She... more>> cared for him through his depression and encouraged him to live. She even medically and physically treated him. All the while she never asked for anything. Treating and taking care of him was already enough of a reward. You can see see why this novel is challenging, yet ultimately so gratifying when he reciprocates her care. He changes from a prodigal scumbag to a responsible, mature man. And all of it was her credit.

I rarely read sad stories, because I think life's already sad enough. Every once in a while, however, I come across gems that punches me in the gut, but then lifts me so much higher.

This is one of those novels.

This is an emotional story and there's no easy escape. You will rage. You will pity. You will cry. You will laugh. And then you will adore. You will adore for all the emotions it manages to bring out in you. <<less

A simple premise of a life changing love story of both characters, I love how straight it was when it comes to its message. Honestly the story focuses on the development of our Lead Characters.

It’s so short but so good, decent pacing and the literary techniques are well done in the narration of the Heroine’s Perspective. It’s so unique and direct to its message, it’s not very complex but simple, yet it’s so simple that it gave complex feelings. An example of great development and realistic portrayal of Two Lovers... more>> who struggled to live like a Husband and Wife. I like the overall story of the novel, very plausible and deserves High Ratings. Our Protagonist is a girl who calls herself “monkey” honestly is there any decent girl who would self depreciate, I don’t think so, but because of her lack of self esteem and her previous treatment from her by her own Master Yang seems made her so s*upid that she’s unconsciously fell in love with her master, at the same time she’s so s*upid hahaha. Our Hero Yang alias “Second Master” have a great character development and was able to become one of the best characters who have improved so much from his former spoiled lifestyle, his inspiration was the best reason he became successful in life, he’s a tsundere honestly, well I’ll let you found out why. I’ve enjoyed this so much, it’s so short but so good, even though I’m a guy this work is a spot on to inspire, to become successful and to live for the love ones. Honestly I like the perspective of the girl who’s doing her best to her master, and I love the master who’s trying to make his servant’s life beautiful. The Power of Forgiveness and Love on this novel is too strong.

Overall I like the story, simple but it leaves complex feelings, it has meaningful inspirational message. Definitely Must Read. <<less

There is not even a word of love mentioned in this short story, yet this is by far the one historical romance story that managed to translate affections in ordinary acts of everyday lives and simple untangled feelings that actually makes sense.

This novel brings a real-world element into the cliche-dominated Chinese historical-romance drama that usually focuses on extreme beauty/intelligence/wealth/power/status. The author managed to being first-class character development all the way with very humanlike characters.

There's no flaming hot passion, yet it answers the most pressing question of our real-life romance:

What kind of person do you imagine spending the rest of your life with?

As for me, similar with the Second Master, the person I long for doesn't need to be a great beauty or smart scholar.

Don't we all, deep down, only long for a person who will truly understand us and treat us well?

The other reviews have done this story justice, however I personally love it so much that I can't help adding my two cents.

When I read this I picture MC's narrative in a monotone. She was able to (unintentionally) be dense, cute, sarcastic, funny and compassionate in a completely matter-of-factly manner as she told the story, and still managed to stir up emotions. I just have a soft spot for this kind of narrative.

The changes in the male lead and the flow of story is commendable and smooth enough. Short but... more>> satisfying read.

Anyone notice how the old granny Feng was completely forgotten though? ??? <<less

Simply put, this story is a powerful story about karma. lol XDD Nevertheless though, it tugged on your heartstrings that you definitely can't help but cry. It was wonderfully written, and the author was savage. The ML's immense character growth was particularly note-worthy. It was perfect.

TL;DR, WARNING: Despite being a happy end, this is NOT a feel-good story, but would leave a deep imprint in you, and lots of lessons too.

Anyway, moving on to my detailed thoughts...

At first, I really thought whatever happy ending it was, I wouldn't be satisfied... more>> -- after all, I'm known to carry grudges down to hell with me in novels. Once the MC's been wronged, I will remember that character for the rest of that novel, and hoped that character will die and never be reborn. When I hinted the story was going to head to reconciliation, of course, I can't help but lament.

Yes, I'm a vicious reader. Maybe whilst most of them readers here are already pitying and praising the ML and hoping for a romantic ending, while I still do pity and praise him, I had hoped he still won't get her love in the end because, first and foremost, I think he doesn't deserve it anyway. Secondly, to only see a person's worth and appreciate their existence after this and that, while bullying them while you were in the high pedestal, it doesn't sit well with me. Being indifferent was fine, but being a bully was not. I was secretly hoping she'd see someone else better.

Alas! Of course, that wasn't meant to be, and I am in no control of their fates.

Then again, seeing the things unfold on the end, I had resigned myself to still accept it. It was bittersweet after all. Seeing the things ML had to do, and the miserable state he was in, well, you really can't help but be moved. He had realised his mistakes and you could feel how remorseful he was. Perhaps the scorn and sufferings he experienced already served as retribution. He really need not suffer any more.

His change of heart was gradual and logical, yes. Either way, I was pulled by his development the most. In the end, you could sense how sincere his feelings was, and how mature he had become. Towards MC, I am just glad she didn't immediately throw herself at him. I admire her loyalty and her kind heart. In the end, the end was rather satisfying. It's a good short read. <<less

One of the best Chinese Historical Romance I've read. I especially like the MFC. Most MFC's that I have read are gifted with beauty or they have some redeeming factor about them but 'Monkey' has only one. She accepts everything and doesn't blame anyone for anything and she finds a way. She depreciates herself but accepts those qualities and somehow finds humor in them. She looks at things not exactly positive but she does what needs be done instead of wallowing on the past which she cannot do anything about... more>> and she strives to make things meet to survive the present. I seriously loved this short novel because of her.

The Second Master is your average just-around-the-corner-rich-handsome-douchebag but wait! He changes. Oh wait! Don't they all douchebags change when they find someone worth changing for? But our second master changed cause there's nothing left for him so he has to but he only realized that after seeing 'Monkey' try her best so that they would both have something to put in their mouth before the end of the day. His change was really amazing I think. Though the novel was short and thus, we don't get much description of how exactly did he train himself it was still satisfying. How he rose from the ground to how he reached the top and how he did not revert to his pilandering self when he has every right to do so. He changed and he loved. He got hurt and he stood up for the sake of himself and his love. So yea I like him as well.

So yes. I recommend this for all those who want to read historical romance but want something different from the common main female character who either has everything and is spoiled or whose smile can launch a thousand ships. <<less

One of the few historical romances I'd recommend without reservation.

This one has more emotional depth and character development than similar novels 10x-100x its length. The writing is compact but meaningful, with the interactions described richly. I could feel in vivid detail that night she ran out in the storm looking for help. Likewise, the emotional conflicts in that understated moment when she made the decision to retreat.

The MC is wonderful, a kind, humble character who has so much inner strength despite her insecurities. She is down-to-earth and isn't afraid to... more>> face her own perceived shortcomings (such as her 'ugliness') with jokes and acceptance.

Spoiler

Even though she's called "dense, " one of my favorite parts of her character is her self-awareness. I believe that she saw how the other maids would constantly fight for favor in the beginning, and didn't want to become one of them so she became "dense" as a form of self-protection. Back then when one man had many wives/concubines, the MC had enough self-respect to not want to become one of many. In my opinion, she left him because she wanted to preserve her feelings for him at a high point and unspoiled by multiple 3rd parties (and possibly even test how deep his feelings for her went). And in the end, after realizing that he truly meant it, she was able to refuse being just a concubine and get what she deserved: to be the only wife.

[collapse]

Wonderful translation, this is one of those stories I'd go back and reread again and again.

Spoiler

Also that moment when the ML kneeled down to allies/rivals/enemies to apologize for his shitty behavior in the past? BEST.

If you've read this story already, I'd like to share this hilarious theory posted in the original jjwxc forums; heavy spoilers!!:

Spoiler

She is not dumb; she may have only stayed with him in the beginning because she was looking for openings to get revenge for the times she was slapped/kicked before in the courtyard. Those hints from the mother/housekeeper asking her to stay were so obvious even a monkey would have gotten it, but she still left anyway. So it's far more likely that she was just pretending to be dumb so he would suffer. In the end, because she was truly in love with him, she forgave him after making him work for it.

I think this theory explains why she would have fun telling him about all those times he treated her badly in the past! And why she would never tell him how long she had liked him (to maintain the upper hand). Haha

A really, really good short romance story. The length and pacing were perfect to capture the main characters' relationship as it developed and changed. The translation was good, too.

WARNING:

This story is so short that reading the reviews may ruin it for you. You should just try reading it -- it will only take you around 30 minutes to finish the whole thing. Don't spoil it for yourself!

... more>> Story:

(The official description does NOT do this story justice!)

An unattractive maid works for the playboy second master of the Yang family. When the family meets disaster and the household falls apart, she is left as the only servant to her master, now a cripple. As the months go by, in the face of her stubborn loyalty, the second young master begins to change...

Characters:

  • The self-deprecating female lead is simple and humble, not s*upid. She's so dedicated and loyal that you can't help but find her endearing, despite how dense she is.
  • The male lead... his character development is a crucial part of the story, and this novel's so short, that I won't spoil it for you here. All I'll say is that his frustrations and different interactions with the girl are so funny and endearing...
This is a sweet story of willingness and redemption. It's not so sugary sweet that it'll give you cavities, but it will fill and warm your soul. <<less

I put off reading this for awhile. But I wish I didn't. Now that I'm done with it, I wish there was more. It really is a simple story. Our narrator is very straight-forward. The male lead changes a great deal. The female lead is not very bright but is very determined and loyal. If anyone knows any stories like this one, tell me please!

This is an illogical story that relies on

crippling Second Master to pull the heartstrings.

[collapse]
Add in a dash of happily ever after and it's honey to romantically inclined readers who enjoy this kind of plot device. If that's you, then totally read it. You will like it. If it's not you, well, might as well read it as it's pretty short. =)
Spoiler

There was no foreshadowing of him having talent or brains, but once he became crippled he gained amazing business insight. He wins a contract for a route without any resources to utilize it and magically makes lots of money. He keeps working hard and eventually makes enough to bring everyone back home. He does all this because he fell in love with his maid and wants to be a strong man so he can give her a good life.

The First Master is shortchanged despite being the smarter and more diligent of the brothers. The Master dies somehow. The house loses all their money somehow. And most strange of all Second Master somehow makes it back home despite clearly having no will to live or the physical capability to move. I can only assume some random good Samaritan knew who he was and sent him home.

THIS is the best CN novel I have ever read. This is truly a gem. Don't be fooled by the cover photo and the description since this is REALLY amazing. It's a shame that this is so short although reading this was so worth it. I can now say that I have a favorite completed CN and it is this. The MC is adorable and I wasn't annoyed at all by her personality, she isn't a Mary Sue (thankfully). This is Mango approved.

What can I say about this? First off, this is a very short story. Ideal for light reading and travel reading. Secondly, this is not really a... comedic short story. This is pretty much romance, with hints of comedy and maturity.

This is the love and life of an ordinary servant of the extraordinary silkpant Second Master. You get the rest.

Yes, it is pretty standard poor girl-rich guy romance, but if it is all that you read into this... sad. It is very well written, with minimal number... more>> of characters. This is really heartwarming, and also... It shows you two important things:

  1. Life will never be smooth, there will be rough times, and rougher times. You have to leap over the edges, and for you to leap, you need motivation. Love can be a very strong motivation.
  2. Never judge a book by its cover. Even the most ordinary person can have an extraordinary heart.
The last chapter always gives me chills after reading it. Yes, sometimes I just read the chapter before going to bed.

It is that good. However, this is not a 'cute' story. The ending is cute... but the entire story is more heart-wrenching.

By the end of the series, I guarantee that you are gonna have a slight ache in your heart. <<less

Read it. Just read it.

At 7 chapters, it's the shortest thing I've seen on this site and I thought how could something with only 7 chapters get 4.8 stars? It was cute, it was lovely, it won't cost you that much time but it will bring a tear to your eyes and a smile to your lips. It's a short story, so no long explanation about the world, back story or side characters. It's just a cute romance/transformation between two people who cares for each other. Just read it.

A short and powerful story which follows the growth of a spoilt young master.

Spoiler

The MC (Monkey) is a plain maid who serves under the spoilt second master of a wealthy household. His family instantly loses their wealth and becomes destitute, while the male lead loses both his legs. Left with nothing, he only has the MC for emotional support as well as his own intellect and business acumen to raise himself and his family, not forgetting the loyalty and dedication of his maid.

[collapse]

The MC is depicted as a plain maid, primarily there to document the changes in the male lead. She’s slightly slow but the overall impression is somewhat normal, while her actions and words are dedicated and kind, but stubborn when required. There’s little character development or growth on her part. The male lead, the second master, begins as an arrogant spendthrift and playboy who is overlooked due to his brother’s talents, until his family’s downfall. Initially despondent, the MC’s care towards him reignites his will to live, and he begins to display the skills and talents that were previously neglected. Climbing up from the bottom, he endures various challenges and humiliations as he strives to protect what is important to him. The length is quite short, but it covers the story well, depicting the struggles and maturity of the male lead. Although the female lead didn’t have a distinct personality, telling the story from her POV prevented the story from being too technical and out of the author's depths. Their interactions and the romance felt a little removed until the end as the narration came from a dense MC but also due to the formalities of their relationship and because the author spent most of their efforts on character development. <<less

Seriously, this story is one of the best stories I have ever read. I really love the protagonist as well as the Male Lead. This is the kind of story that is best read when your heart is so tired of stories filled with harem, reverse harem, love rivals, and more love rivals. I have read a lot of harem or reverse harem tagged novels and always find them as shallow. Shallow not in the sense that their plot is shallow but in the sense that the feeling of love... more>> that they convey is not strong. But in this, it will make you want to be in love and feel their kind of love. The kind of selfless love that can make you tear up. The kind of fleeting and pure love that you just want to be with the one that your heart treasures. You only want that person. And that person only. No one can ever replace them. For once in my life, I want to experience the kind of love the MC felt for the ML. It just intrigues me. Will I ever love someone the way the MC love the ML? Hmm.. So interesting. <<less

This is perfect!

I'm beginning to love this author's work. I have always admired people who do not let their shortcomings or incapabilities hinder them. Sadly, there are only few stories about them. And this story is beautifully written showcasing the tenacity and determination of both leads despite the obstacles they faced.

This story tells us that it's alright to give people a chance to redeem themselves. And people should clearly strive to be better - not only for himself/ herself but also for his/her most important person.

I truly admire the patience... more>> and love the female lead had exhibited. It was one of a kind. I can't help but to ponder if there is really such kind of selfless love. She truly is amazing. I'm glad that the ML was able to realize this. She deserves everything.

At the start, I depised the ML. He's the typical rich jerk who didn't know how to behave himself rightly. I really hate MLs who insulted and abused FLs verbally and even so physically. And now a tragedy happened that allowed him to realize all of his mistakes in life. Considering his changes, he's also one praise-worthy. He brought back all the glory he once lost and he was much better now. In the case of this ML, I was actually expecting him to say the 3 words. Oh well, actions speak louder than words I guess. Haha.

In general, this is definitely worth a read! Try this one. You'll feel upset, heartbroken, you might even cry because yes I did, you'll be surprised as to how the author was able to create such a story. <<less

This is an amazing novel. A must read in my list. I've already lost count on how many times I've read this book.

Here's why I like it:

The MC- is a little bit dense but that's what makes the book so interesting! Even though I dont like dense MCs, the denseness of the MC in this book is just enough so that you dont pull you hair out.

The ML- At first, he didnt really acknowledge the MC but as the story goes on he realizes that the MC is the only... more>> one who stood by him. I love how he tries so hard to show his affection. It's just enough to make me swoon.

Overall, I dont find any faults in this book except for the fact I wish it was longer. *Sigh* Oh well, if you want a light read you should read this book. <<less

The MFC isn't someone who is beautiful and has everything you would usually read about in other Chinese Historical novels. She is not wealthy and has no special skills to attract the ML attention. All she had was her willingness to be by his side even when times got tough.

Short and sweet novel that brought the point across without dragging it out.

The female lead in this story is so dense but not to the point of being hateful. The male lead is a well developed character. I would honestly give this a 4.5 but I don't think it's allowed (or I haven't figured it out yet) but I can't give it a 4 stars rating... so yeah :)

One of the stories that I'll not forget... an inspiration that as long as you're still alive, you can still redeem yourself. You may not be able to turn back time or reincarnate... more>> and be an epic character but if you have the courage to live on and try your best to make up for what you're lacking, your life can still turn around. <<less
