Pretty fun and enjoyable. No harem, interesting power system.

Spoiler

My only gripe is that MC just happens to be a genius for no apparent reason. He's just naturally smarter and better at everyone in the universe at cultivating for some reason. I suppose it's slightly refreshing when compared to the majority of MC's who have golden egg after golden egg handed to them by *fate* but still...

Okay so i've been enjoying this novel by iet a lot more than I expected. I like the MC to a certain degree, I like how firm he is in his beliefs, but I feel his personality is a boring cliché typical of xianxia novels, nothing unique about him tbh. The scale of the novel really explodes at a certain point and I feel that his crossover from semi-weak to basically a legend in the mortal realm is way too fast. It's written decently well, and there has been a... more>> lot more interesting side characters compared to most other popular xianxia i've read. That said I feel there's a few of iet's flaws that makes this story/world/plot less exciting for me. Fx. A lot of characters just gets kind of thrown out the window, his brother is basically still useless and hasn't had any substantial progression in character or cultivation since the beginning,

And the same could be said for anybody in his 'family' besides his love interest. There's a lot of interesting things that have been foreshadowed which iet has either forgotten/given up on, or it'll get explained much later in the novel. (Which I highly doubt considering it's iet)

tl:dr: All in all a decent 'filler' novel for people waiting for more chapters for some truly well written storys like fx Way of Choices. Nothing new or 'unique' in the world/cultivation and basically escalates from semi scrub noob to supreme pro gamer, in less than 3-4 volumes. Worth a read if you've enjoyed some of his other works, because it seems he's improving in some areas, and in others not so much. <<less

The story has a lot of potential.. No denying it. The spear techniques, cultivation, or grasping the true meanings everything is beautifully described. The main problem is in the details. I don't know whether it's the author or the translator. The hills are sometimes 300-400 km high and the MC can climb it in a few seconds and sometimes when he need to travel to other province say several thousand km it takes him hours. This irregularity in describing distances and time bugs me a lot but happens quite frequently... more>> and so the low rating. <<less

The story isn't very compelling, but it's well written and the author created a pretty nice universe.

Like most IET stories, romance is secondary and not very well developed, but there's no harems going on or r*pe like you find in some inferior works that get translated. If the author introduces some real tragedy that motivates the MC, then I would up this to a 5 star review.

Occasionally the translation, especially during the earlier chapters, can get a bit confusing. It's mainly in terms of the main characters power level and... more>> monetary value of certain items. I've read other translated IET works, such as TNC and DE, so I believe it's the translation/editing at fault. <<less

One of the best novels I've read, perhaps the best from IET. Finally the MC's main motivation is not the revenge for his mother, or at least only at the very begining, and it solved quite quickly. You can see the same character development (regarding power ups), as in DE, ST or CD, but I don't find it too bothering.
Absolutly worth of trying, it easily owns ST or CD.

This is a bona fide 5/5 for me. This novel is really enjoyable. The pacing is great. Many novels have me always excited and eager for fight scenes, but this novel has me hooked on the MCs cultivation style and the time he takes. He's considered a genius, but he does his cultivation slow and steady. So a fun and relaxing read. Shout out to the translating team as well! They are awesome.

Stopping at this part for now. I might continue it in the future or not, depending on fate.

The tone of this novel is kinda similar to Archeon Eon Art, if you've read it before. It has a slice of life vibe, with cultivation and all.

They're also similar in terms of having a demon as a longtime enemy and that the protagonist would have a huge contribution to the battle. There's still other similarities I saw, but I won't mention it since it may become a spoiler to you all.

The start... more>> of the novel is quite slow. It took a few volumes before it started to become exciting for me. Though, the sudden arrest (is that the right term?) of the protagonist's parents caught me off guard because it's really too sudden.

I recommend this to you if you like slow pace novels and slice-of-life vibes. I don't recommend it, though, if you like fast paced novel.

Spoiler

I don't like how the body cultivation for the bloodline was forgotten. It mentioned before that it has different levels, and the only time I saw it was when the protagonist achieved the first level. After that, it was entirely forgotten even when the protagonist's cultivation increased.

This made me angry, which honestly surprised me. I've rarely felt anger at a story.

The main character does not earn his power, he just gets it. In most novels training and combat are linked and you can't forever increase your strength without battle.

The the main character is this story isn't like that. He just swings his spear around and gains tremendous insights.

... more>> He trains insanely fast, to the extent that he is the faster person in the history of the universe.

In the end I just don't believe that he could exist. He his power shouldn't belong to him <<less

It is fine when it is started. MC is optimistic and motivated. But you can't find any humour in entire book. MC never suffers at all. Romance is bland. Mc's wife practically behaves like a housewife waiting for her husband to return from his adventures. Author should have given enough space to write about her own story.i don't seem to remember describing about their daughter looks. Author has thrown the children back after one chapter after their birth. Next they appear it is after 500 years. MC personality never changes.... more>> As their was no reason to suffer because he could revive all his friends and relatives. Maybe author also thought it is too much for everyone to survive billion years only then they died. Cultivation methods are good. But story becomes bland with humour or good romance. It would have been fine without romance. <<less

I'd say it's pretty much a standard IET work. So it's standard fare with multiple ascensions to higher planes while ditching all his friends/family/love interest behind until MC reaches the peak when you get an abrupt ending.

It's certainly better than Archean Eon Art but I did prefer Coiling Dragon and Swallowed Star. It's hard to tell if the later were better written or if it's just that I read them first as plots are quite similar.

  1. Another fast paced junk food novel by ieattamatoes.
  2. The book doesn't have many clinches that the wuxia have came to be defined for.
  3. What I love about the book is if the king says he is the strongest then he is, dude just believe it. The begger that the young master insulted is not actually the strongest one. He is just a begger.
  4. You remember, one of the characters in cultivation novels where there was a heaven defying genius, with all the clan adoring him, having many treasures given by his clan that made him hard to kill, had many big brothers, ancestors, powerful teacher. The protagonist fought with him, defeated him, provoking the whole clan in the process. The MC is that guy. Its totally awesome
  5. The MC is a genius. There is no hiding of Power, too many people picking up fights for no reason, no MC who everyone hated for no reason.
  6. You will not have to wait for the real fun stuff to come, the development is very fast.
  7. The MC of authors favourite. But well he is just the exact carbon copy of his other MCs.
  8. The elders actually behave like one.
  9. The MC is strictly in the lawful faction with all the support that comes with it.
  10. I just love the cultivation system. The realm is important but not as important as understanding the world.
  11. The MC doesn't really struggle much. The book is just like fast food. You can't drop it

I Eat Tomatoes is the author who introduced me to the world of Chinese novels with Coiling Dragon, so he holds a special place for me. Lord Xue Ying is his sixth novel that I have read, so how does it measure up to the xianxia genre in general and the other books from the author in particular.

The story is interresting, well-paced, with the usual themes we can expect from IET (fight against dark powers and ascension to the top of cultivation). It is written in a fine style, it... more>> has a good combination of planed storytelling with wrenches thrown into the gears at the right times in order to renew the plot. A good story, but not the best I've read from this author. Sadly, this novel suffers from a big flaw, especially in the latter third/fourth of the book: filler. Seriously, the author sometimes retells an event or situation from at least two, and often three, four or even in one case five points of view, without adding any value to the story. As a result, some chapters could be a third or even a fourth of their size without losing any value plot-wise.

The main character, the eponymous Dong Bo Xue Ying, is a fine protagonist in the IET style dear to my heart. Honest, determinated, caring for his loved ones and friends, he is passionate about cultivation and spear (his favorite weapon for the whole novel), and one of the best MC made by the author, distingued by his interrest and generosity to others). His wife Yu Jing is also a very good character, relevant to many parts of the plot, although her importance diminishes from the half point of the book (but she is still present), just as the one of his family (the protagonist being too "exceptionnal" for them to truly follow in the story). This is quite normal for IET, as romance has almost never been the strong suit of his work (with one or two exceptions).

In fact, for the rest of the cast, there is a lot of renewal between the various point of the story, the most in any novel of IET, whether were talking about allies, mentors, friends or antagonists. Truth to be told, there is no real main villain driving the plot of even the last part of the book. The only exception being one of the MC's friend/mentor, who is in fact the easyly recognizable Luo Feng, the protagonist of Swallowed Star (one of IET's previous novel). Most of the characters, out of the main cast, are functionnaly written, but not really fleshed out beside that, especially for most antagonists, who are hostile because "it's their nature" or "their are jealous of the protagonist".

The cultivation system is where this book truly shines, as it has in fact multiple cultivations systems, each a road to to the top (some based of blood/lineage power, other based on understanding the Dao "poetically" or "scientifically"...). And while the protagonist has a favorite system, he picks from numerous styles along the road, with great descriptions of his perception, insights and progresses, which make the reading of the "cultivation" parts a real pleasure. Plus, unlike a lot of novels of the genre, the power progression of the MC does not accelerate toward the end of the book, but instead slows down, as Xue Ying is the first to center his cultivation on a certain Dao in this novel's universe (a major plot point).

For the translation, the first quarter of the translation has been done very well by Radiant Translation. Sadly after the translator was switched to Chaos, the quality took a dive, with numerous typos, wrong uses of words, changes to the terms designating something from one paragraph to another... The novel is still readable, but this level of work, which I can only qualify as "sloppy", makes the experience quite bumpy, and that's inexcusable for the work of a writer of IET's caliber.

So, in conclusion, Lord Xue Ying is good, even very good novel, with a fine story, an amazing power system, very good protagonist, but also mostly average character writting and lots of filler in the latter part of the story. Moreover the sloppy translation is bad enough to take it down a notch. As far as IET's novels go, it is clearly above Swallowed Star and Seeking the Flying Sword Path, but below the wonderful Coiling Dragon and Desolate Era, on par with Stellar Transformation. My final verdict for Lord Xue Ying is a 7 out of 10 (originally a 8, but I just can't ignore the bad translation). A fine piece of reading, especially for the cultivation, although not the author's best.

P.S: thanks to I Eat Tomatoes for writing this novel and Radiant Translation for translating the first part. As for Chaos, please try to improve. <<less

In between Coiling Dragon (best xuanhuan ever) and Stellar Transformations / Swallowed Star in term of quality.

The first 400 chapters are great (5/5), because there is clear path to go from weak to strong with good secondary characters and world building.

After that, there are mainly 3-4 arcs and the entertainement decrease a bit. The path of cultivation is kind of fuzzier and fuzzier, until the last 50-100 chapters. The ending is also quite good, and a bit more complex/detailed than previous IET novels I read, and you might have wanted... more>> the author to continue for a few hundred more chapters ahah...

Still, the writting can be quite confusing and overly complicated sometimes: one level cultivation is even called: "Grand Perfection World Realm Chaotic Origin Experts"... and the MC is not enough ruthless: if all bad guys will meet their ends at some point, a few of them are quite tenacious for lots of chapters.

To summary, the first 400 chapters are here to shape the mind/cultivation basis of the MC, and so they are the most thrilling to read, afterward, the MC follows the path set up by previous great cultivators toward being an overlord, rellying on his "talent" in Illusion/Mirage (soul), and it's a bit less entertaining, but, because the novel is written by IET, with interesting concepts and solids worlds building, there are no big flaws in the story writting and it is quite pleasant to read all along compared to all other novels of the kind. <<less

I feel Like reading Desolate Era once again, Author sticks with an idea the whole novel like back then (Chaos Cycle) and started to write bullsh*t until the MC went trough it. Here he comes with the crap idea of ... more>>

Crumbling Heart due Long Cultivation

[collapse]
that happens every xxxxxxxxxx years.

So as the Chekhov's gun dictates, Author must make it happens so the Looooong Time Skip appears.

This is nothing more than a Wish Fulfillment Novel, there is no danger on MC, any problem is solved quickly, so forget about Tears.

Spoiler

Like when MC's parents died or his wife's soul was dissipating. Everything of that was solved 2 chapters later.

[collapse]

He finds underlings and never use them like:

Spoiler

The guys the finds and the Dragon, he keep the dragon on guard, what abotu the Ape and little bird on the saint's tomb?

[collapse]

I recommend this novel if you have nothing else to read, don't join the Hype about Novel Authors, he may have done a good job with CD and other Novels. But at the same times, he writes crap like this one and Desolate Era.

So far on Chapter 440 and getting tired of it, I will finish it. if I see anything else to rant about, I update.

About Score. 3/5 I know the Author. and nothing that the plots adds in the future, can fix the garbage that has been released in the past.

Edit: (Completed)

Nothing to see here... The history became a Word-Count-Fest to a boring level, then like many authors who swim in a sea of words, started to rush the ending, not only the Plot, But the Cultivation!.

Spoiler

On the very last Chapter:

"This Monarch Flying Snow became a World Realm Chaotic Origin Lifeform on the same day he becomes an Overlord? How could he have such a quick breakthrough?"

[collapse]

Srly? I have seem rushing a fight in the last chapter many times, but rush between 3 lvs of cultivation, when it has been stated not just on this novel, but many novels, that the higher you are the harder it becomes... Author Circumvent this with Insane mammon of Time Skipping... This even Put Desolate Era To Shame!

There is no such last fight with a powerful existence, he

The MC is the Powerful Existence, the Last Boss that enemies cant defeat.

The ending of this Novel comprises something that would take 40 chapters into one (1), like if the Author was on Board of Titanic and wanted to finish before the ship sunk...

Resuming (Complete Novel) :

My Rating stands, as I said many times, you cant rate high a novel with the basis of his best features, or because MC was cool in 5 chapters out of 1300, scoring is an overall summary, there are good moments, I did quite enjoyed:

Spoiler
  • The times he Reincarnated and was good with his new family.
  • Don't hate Harem, but I like when Author doesn't shove women to MC, so he reject them like Gynophobic b*tch.
  • The Connection to Swallowing Star's MC.
  • MC is not a "Do it All" he focus on his thing only nothing of pill refining, formations and such like those MC who can do everything.
[collapse]

Nonetheless the Scoring of 3 out of 5 remains due to the negative points in the past and as I predicted, the negative point in the ending appeared. When you have read

Dozen of novels things get repetitive and one tends to be more critic abut such things.

But if you are new to These novels or you have just read a couple, I recommend you to read it, it has been a good read. <<less

Maybe IET's best novel? Possible but certainly the one with the most well-developed cultivation lore (many types of cultivation system and a sensible detailed explanation of the last realms based on laws) and that is my kind of shit.

Dialogue and character depth has always been the author's weak point, but the plot and power grind are nice. But I feel like the MC goes through tougher adversities in the beginning and has it too easy latter.

Romance is actually better than in the average novel -especially the start of... more>> it. Later the wife doesn't do much. <<less

Extremely overrated, lazy, and uninspired cultivation novel. Let me explain. Lord Xue Ying is about this cultivation genius who without a master and using purely his own genius just powers through cultivation levels like its double exp weekend. The first major realm, the mortal realm is effectively over in 100 chapters. That's ridiculous. Usually for these tr*sh tier cultivation novels, the mortal realm takes 500+ chapters at least. He powers through levels so fast its dizzying.

The other major problem with the story is that the plot is extremely lazy. There... more>> are only one major plotline at the start of the novel. His parents pissed off a major clan his mother belonged to and are imprisoned and the MC wants to rescue them. Guess what, this plotline is resolved after he transcends past the mortal realm in 100 chapters. After this, its just this dude... training... forever... Lets contrast this with something like Against the Gods, with the first 50 chaps of the story, the author builds several plotlines for the MC to resolve, the Sky Poison Pearl, Mirror of Samsara, Jasmine, Xia Qingyue, Yun Che's origin, Yun Che's quest to save his Little Aunt and Grandfather. This novel has literally one tr*shy plotline and its over within 100 chapters. Just tr*sh. <<less

i quite like IET novels but what I find in this book is it isnt like IET novels in the sense that the character goes out and has constant life or death battle which isnt too bad but the problems are that the character has a safety bubble around him that just doesn't dissapear meanign he faces no danger at all throught the story, the MC has no real motivation just some bullsh*t I need to get stronger unlike DE and ST and even CD (really good book but some... more>> prominent flaws too) where despite the obvious constant I need to get stronger because of some tiny issue at book 3/4 which later will become a massive life or death battle in the divine realm with the most OP people in the book where he'll have a sudden boost in power and become grandmist master and come back and shatter the enemies weapon in one strike. As usual the romances (as with most IET novels) aren't the most 3D but to be honest who actually reads IET for a well rounded believable romance plot.

despite its flaws this book is still quite good but it had a lot of wasted potential and starts off slowly which discourages some potential readers who judge the book by its front cover, synopsis and first few chapters, even people with greater patience wouldn't read further than one or two books if it weren't a IET novel. <<less

Lord Xue Ying is great story, I liked it so much i've started reading mtl of later chapters finishing it in one go all 38 volumes. I gave it 5 stars because from first to 36th book it was brilliant only the 37th and 38th were so rushed (last 5 chapters in 38th had more major action than some 1-2 volumes in row) it was hard to enjoy it. Still I Eat Tomato is a great writer and if you not sure you want to read it check Stellar Transformation.

Up to this point in the story I so far find a great novel to read. I truly enjoy the characters within the story. Though I won't go as far as to stay that all the major or minor characters have great depth to them, overall they are enjoyable characters to read.

Things that I love about this novel are:... more>>
Spoiler
  1. The MC I have to start with him because if I did not enjoy reading about the MC in this story then it would not be a 5-star story to me. However, this story has a wonderful MC in my opinion which for me stems from reading so many freaking light novels with half of them having either only half decent MC or just downright annoying MC. First of all, I enjoy the plot for why the MC grows stronger, it is sad and moves your heartstrings without being too sad. Secondly, it makes sense MC practices non stop for years dedicating all his time and effort to his spear. This, in turn, molds the MC to truly be a powerful character as he grows and shows that he does not just become strong through luck or some kind of cheat power. Though he does awaken his primal blood which is kind of a cheat though it is not just something he alone can have which balances it out plus it loses it value over time unless he can upgrade it which is hard to do.
  2. The weapon I read a lot of light novels and the majority of them are based on the sword which is all good and dandy but it is refreshing to have a different weapon as the focus. It makes the fight scenes a bit more enjoyable.
  3. The love story is pretty good I am not going to say its some hallmark story but it is enjoyable in its own right, mainly because the female is not some bimbo who just instantly falls for him the first time they meet though she does feel attraction towards him. Secondly, she is also strong in her own right and does not need the MC protection at all times of the day which is great though I am a guy and I enjoy stories with a male protagonist so that I can feel as if I am in the story. I do enjoy a story that adds a love interest which is not some boring weak partner who needs help all the time and is only good for in the story to add some spice to the MC life.
  4. Setbacks I like how in this story they add some setbacks which help to mold the character and strengthen him life without difficulties cannot truly make someone great, as everyone has heard before a diamond is made from great pressure.
  5. Also what I like about this story that differs from others is the main character's outlook on cultivation. In other stories, the MC aims to grow stronger as fast as possible which leads them to many life and death situations which is not a bad thing but there can only be so much plot armor to save the MC in a story before it gets old. However, in this story the MC does not rush his strength instead he enjoys the process of figuring out his path of the spear and truly loves to delve deeper into the dao of the spear through long and constant sessions of cultivation. This does not though mean that all you will read is about him behind closed doors cultivating because there are many times he is forced into life and death battles. On top of when he is cultivating it shows how he thinks and how he comes to some of his conclusions as to how to make his spear the greatest of all.
  6. There are more things I like but for now, this is all I can think of.

As for things I do not like about this story, to be honest there is not much, though if I had to come up with a few I guess they would be.

  1. He, in my opinion, he became transcendent to fast in the story I am not meaning he should have been older when he reached that stage. Instead the aurthor should have add more adventure for the MC to encouter in his life before reaching that stage. (This is not to contradict my standpoint I made earlier about him not aiming for a lot of life and death situations.) I just think he should have experienced the mortal world more before reaching past it.
  2. Due to only focusing on the path of the spear while he grew up the MC was very naive which also goes back to my earlier statement that he needed to adventure more in the mortal world the grow and learn so that he could avoid more issues later on because of being naive. Though this issue seems to fix itself pretty fast anyways because the MC is smart and learns from his mistakes but still.
  3. Brother of MC is pretty annoying for a long time in the beginning which kind of falls on MC for. He should have definitely not had babies his brother so much could have avoided some issues.
  4. Another issue is just the tempo of this story it does not feel like the MC gets to experience a lot of a certain area before it is time to move on as a mortal the MC did not adventure through the world a lot and only did he do that after he became a transcendent though when he became a transcendent he did not adventure through all the worlds that are connected to his world and are there for transcendents to grow stronger. Now it seems he would reach the diety realm before adventuring through any of the transcendent worlds around him.
    [collapse]
As of now, this is all I can think of, overall this is one of my favorite stories out of all the ones I have read so far. <<less
