As the grandmaster of demonic cultivation, Wei Wuxian roamed the world, hated by millions for committing acts of necromancy. Overthrown by the powerful clans he had attempted to subjugate, Wei Wuxian is supposedly killed by his shidi in order to save the cultivation world.

Restored to life in the body of Mo Xuanyu, the local cut-sleeve lunatic, in order to exact revenge on his abusive relatives, Wei Wuxian quickly finds himself spiralling back into his old life when he’s taken away by the cold-hearted, stern, and ultimately quite boring Lan Wangji – who might be harbouring warmer feelings than contempt. Perhaps of the…romantic kind?

But despite his new beginning, Wei Wuxian begins to unravel a decade and a half long mystery that is set to undo the very fabric of the cultivation world as they know it.

A mysterious, action-packed thriller of a ride, this is a journey you won’t want to miss!

This was my first MXTX book so I might be biased, but I love this story.

I love how all the side stories were, in basic terms, raw pain. I love how they all work together and meld with the original plot.

Romance factor:

Spoiler

I love how Lan Zhan’s so dedicated to Wei Ying but isn’t obsessed. I love how Wei Ying gradually falls for Lan Zhan before realising his feelings are returned, and it’s not Wei Ying just accepting it for what it is, because that’s love: you feel confused at your own feelings.

[collapse]

I think that a few things could be improved, though:

Spoiler

Xue Yang’s alliance with Jin GuangYao was never fully developed much, and the Su Sue guy and wannabe Lan Sect could’ve been presented a bit more.

[collapse]

Also, like the rest of MXTX’s works, this story doesn’t give many hints. It’s mostly Wei Ying thinking “wait, what if...”, and then mentally explaining it to us readers.

Either way, I love the story and cried at the end, when the first song comes up. ;-; <<less

Yes yes, it’s good, honestly if you haven’t heard about this already I’d be shocked because of it’s popularity. There’s nothing that hasn’t been said, but three things:

1. It’s flash back heavy, which some don’t care for

2. It’s very good, but be wary of hype. Sometimes furor can make it sound like the second coming of Jesus. Stick around for the first few chapters and maybe the first flashback, move on from there.

3. It can get grating to see this mentioned on other danmei pages, hell I like the story... more>> and I still roll my eyes when I see it mentioned on a series with no connection. That said, it’s a story that deserves a try at the very least. <<less

I really dont need to write another review, cause there's already too many people wrote about it, LOL. But I will still write it cause it'd be such a waste if you dont give a good review to a truly good novel. and yeaah, basically I agree with the masses opinion. This is one of the best light novel or web novel i've ever read. And even more amazing is that this is a BL genre, where usually the BL novel category dont really care much about quality, and here... more>> it is, a top quality material for reading. Whether youre a rotten girl/guy (fujoshi/fudanshi) or not, this is a marvelous novel. Worth for being one of the top tier novel in this site. And I really understand why this novel popped up so much in many reccomandation reading list here and there.

P.S btw Lan Zhan really is the best seme/gong, the gentles, the coolest of them all, in every BL novels i've ever read and found!! Seriously, he's a prince among prince, and knight among knight in shining armor, the savior among savior to all uke/shou out there (though he's only devoted to one and only Wei Ying). Every scene where he come to save the day, it's always feel so natural, not forced at all to make a heroic scene. Sigh... Mo Xiang Tu really is doing her best here. I'm so glad he's not in the same troupe as the rapist and black bellied seme/gong LOL, instead he's in the tragic yet romantic seme troupe LOL LOL <<less

I hardly write reviews. But I have to, for this story.

An absolutely beautiful subtle romance underneath the action plot. Their relationship isn't forced like most BL (whereby it's borderline glorified r*pe), and each always waits for the other's approval before doing anything, and willing to back off if the other rejects them. That is VERY important and the difference between r*pe and consensual s*x. That is true love. That was what I admired in their relationship, the mutual respect and trust that most BL lacks in all types of media.

The... more>> characters aren't flat. Each has a reason and you can understand why they do the things they do, although that doesn't mean they should be forgiven, you can understand where they come from. Of course, there are a few flat characters the author throws in here and there to prevent the reader from getting tired.

The MC has a past that can really make you feel despair. It's not something super unrealistic and extreme like revenge dramas (torture etc). It is something that given the circumstances, may happen to you. Like I said, you can understand where the characters come from, and that includes the 'villians'. They aren't even really very 'villian-like', which corresponds to people irl. And you can really feel the despair by the MC. He's unable to hate anyone cuz of their reasons, and you as the reader is also unable to really hate any character. You basically feel like how the MC does, although you might not behave the same way (If it were me I wouldn't have trusted Jiang Cheng since their teenage years, lol).

The love interest is patient and content with having MC back to life. He just wants to stand by him and not leave him again, so he can intervene if anything goes wrong. Before, the MC was utterly alone and never knew that someone (love interest) cared for him, so in his second lifetime, the love interest makes sure to let the MC know he always has the MC's back. Unconditional trust. Willing to give up anything just to stay by him. The MC sees that and is touched, and gradually falls. You can really feel the regret the love interest had and how he learns from losing the MC, and now did all he wanted to do last time without holding back (NOT sexual).

Very moving, poignant writing. The author is indeed gifted with words and extremely hardworking with rounded characters. Beautiful. <<less

Seriously, this novel allowed me many things. First : I discovered danmei (耽美) novels, and I'll always be grateful for this. It showed me a new world, literally. Second : it allowed me to learn Chinese and thanks to it, I improved a lot. And last : it made me dream. Really, it was really a marvel to read!

First, the characters. They're all so good and developed! You think you know perfectly this character? BAM, in you balls, it was in fact this and this and this. Second, the plot.... more>> I live this plot. So much twists that'll make your head spin (in a good way). And lastly, THE COUPLE DAMNIT. Really, LWJ and WWX and so cute. Their history is something, made me cry and laugh at the same time.

This novel is a master, a work of art. Sadly, the novel hasn't been published in paper but it is available in Chinese (I have the books at home, so happy (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°))

Anyway, if you haven't read it, you definitely have to. Really good. <<less

This is so far one of the best BL novel I've ever read, starting from the characterization, story plot, humor, angst and even small details. The development of the story is really good (though for some it might be confusing :p), the author also very smart to place humor at the perfect timing that made me as reader laughed hard and cried soon after that x'D The angst itself is so heavy that made my heart ached from it T_T

Also this is one of very few novel where I could... more>> not hate even the villain (err.. except for Wen Chao + that Jiao2 b*tch and his allies :/), since all of them have their own stories and past and damn... it's so beautiful even though it hurts ;; <<less

This is one of the best novels I've ever read. Even if it wasn't Shounen Ai, I would have loved it. The storytelling, depth of characters, and world building were all fantastic.

It's a novel that gets better the second time around. The first time I read it, it was a bit confusing and hard to follow. After re-reading it, I can fully appreciate the subtle hints, foreshadowing, and intricate plotlines.

The novel isn't fully translated yet, but you can find the Chinese RAWs online. There's also several podcasts that have readings... more>> of the novel as well. <<less

I have the same problem with anyone who confuse about the names and sect names. There are so many names even the MC has 4 names (or more?) Buuuttt I really like the story. And the translator do a great job, they even make a section for names and sect guide.

MC has interesting personalities and abilities (I kinda wish the author explain the details of his ability, such as why the corpse hear his command, why his flute and command can control corpse). As for ML..... the typical strong and... more>> cold ML. So yeah MC's charm definetly stronger (for me).

Another reason I like it because it contains slightly horror. I love to imagine the horror and thrill feeling. <<less

I have read this novel and watched the drama countless time and cried countless times.

Let me tell that this is not your typical BL story. Even without the BL part, this novel's plot is worth reading. But love is the essence that makes the characters livelier.

Don't expect fluffy MC and domineering ML CEO plot. I do love these plots, but this story is not one of them.

The stories of Main characters as well as the Other Characters are equally heart wrenching. There are more than what eyes see and ears... more>> hear. This one line can sum up the whole novel.

If you looking for some story that can probably by chance change your perspective of life and learn a lot along with a legendary love story, please do read this novel. <<less

I've read this novel during the peak of pandemic after watching the 1st season of the anime and the live action. This is also my first bl novel and it made me want for more 😁.

This novel has almost everything that I could ask for: action, comedy, drama, fantasy.

This may be a bit confusing if you are reading the novel first without prior knowledge because of the flashbacks here and there. Since I've watched the drama first, I was not an issue.

All in all this novel is great.

2, 5 to 3 stars

While I like the novel and the characters, for me, it's mostly the editing and structure of the book, that is the issue. The back and forth of the flashback and even a flashback within a flashback, without giving me a clear sign that it's past history, had me clutching my head.

Also, they were seriously long, so much so that I honestly skipped parts.

As for the characters and world, there are definitely some inconsistencies which because I just finished vol 3 I'm not sure whether... more>> they will be resolved in the future. Nonetheless, the world building does exist and the characters arent that bad. <<less

I am about halfway through the 3rd officially translated novel and honestly, the flashbacks are killing me. I don't mind flashbacks at all, but they should be short and used in moderation, but up to this point, the flashbacks take up more than half work! It's like reading two completely different stories all mixed together and it's extremely frustrating. I just get into the current timeline, get caught up in the story, and then another super-long flashback starts. Then I finally get caught up in that timeline and then the... more>> flashback ends. It completely kills the excitement of both timelines. I am not sure why the author didn't just write this out chronologically. I think this story would've been flawless, at least so far, if she had done that. <<less

im going to reread this. For the third time.

very nice characters, no insipid or bland and flat. All round, some shows improvements while others are better left alone. This is one of the few danmei I've read that other characters, not the protagonist or antagonists, affects the story so much.

Reasons to read:

  1. Many hidden lessons in life, since there are a lot of issues that gets resolved.
  2. Very likable MC. At first, ML was just good but after he matured he was gold. Very nice Character progression.
  3. Heavy read, emotional and educational? Or inspiring. Idk what word to use just know that its time consuming and worth while.
  4. Many stuffs were implied, hidden in context so its making me anxious reading this coz what if I missed something? Really improves your reading comprehension if you're not biased.
  5. WWX.
save the best for the last.

The world building might just be the only good part about Mo Dao Zu Shi.

MC is way too shameless and childish for his own good. He doesn't know where to stop. ML is weird and overly h**ny.

I don't know why this book is so hyped. It's outright bad. Side characters are more interesting than MC's.

About the extras:

r*pey, as usual for MXTX. They're unreadable. How did someone think incense burner was a good idea? It's so problematic. I hate all the mxtx extras, (except tgcf)

The Best-EST BL of all-time !!!

Personally, Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, also known as The Founder of Diabolism (GoDC/FoD), is my first ever chinese BL novel I have read.

On this note, I have to second what @Akime yuko reviewed. I agree 💯 with EVERYTHING he/she wrote in his/her review! Trust me, I did mentally bash my tardy self for not having discovered this gem of a BL beforehand. What a loss! I was literally living under the rocks, undoubtedly. Cause it was and is thanks to FoD/GoDC novel that I also... more>> discovered the existence of NU. Before then, I never knew the existence of chinese novels, not to mention ones of such grandeur.

It was literally a whole new world that opened up in front of me, and since then, I was undoubtedly a goner - lost in a new world of obsessive reading! Anyways, no matter however much I may say is not enough to express exactly how much I appreciate this novel after the unfulfilled experience with the censored bromance in the drama!

I am forever grateful to have discovered the existence of the novel thanks to the comment section of its serialised drama - The Untamed, ah!

To think the censored bromance which still shone so brilliantly and gave hope of a possible BL, thanks to the mind-blowing actors and the entire filming team and staff, was actually really a BL at the core of its novel entirety, mamma mia!

And my goodness, was this BL novel not even more mind-blowing than I could have even ever thought, hoped or anticipated!

A true, genuine chef's kiss for a voracious reader like me! Intense suspense, political intrigue and selfless love amongst many more! What a rollercoaster read it was, and yet SO ADDICTING!

To think I could also visualise the novel, as if a film was playing right in my mind thanks to the awesome-beyond-words actors and serialised drama, he he! A definite win, no doubt 💯! I really LOVE this novel. There may be other amazing BL novels that I have read after GoDC, but none can replace this one! Absolutely agree 💯 with a note of Exiled Rebels Scanlations, that there is no point in trying to search for a novel with similar storyline as GoDC, cause there simply exists no novel with the caliber of GoDC!

It's literally a novel that's one in a gazillion! This is what I call a gem of a read!

Whether it is in terms of storyline setting and build-up, character setting and build-up or the development of both throughout the novel, it is one of the best-EST BL on NU.

That is to say, since I had already watched The Untamed, I cared only about the flashbacks of WangXian. I could do without the lengthy flashbacks of the other characters. But yes, I will admit that every scene, including those "I-don't-care-much-about" flashbacks, paved the pathway for the novel thoroughly. Each scene in the novel is such a well-constructed add-on that builds up and develops the novel's world, storyline and characters. In addition, I am utterly thankful and grateful @Exiled Rebels Scanlations (ExR) for translating this novel. I can't express enough to say how sad and angry I was when ExR had to undergo that translation copyright whatsoever issue back then.

No matter what, for me, the English translation credits of GoDC goes solely to Exiled Rebels Scanlations. Be it when I first read GoDC @ExR back in 2019 or now, only the translation by ExR is what I recognise and acknowledge.

The issues surrounding this is such a heart-wrenching event that made countless readers of GoDC, like me, not being able to read the translation of GoDC @ExR anymore, including the future readers.

Such a setback was literally like throwing a spanner in the works! Not to mention, the two years' worth of precious efforts and selfless hard work of ExR in translating GoDC painstakingly was wasted and made for naught because of those issues and those whoever-they-are ingrates who were related to that issue. This is something that can never be forgotten or forgiven!

Nevertheless! This novel is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

If you can google it and read it online, go ahead! You won't regret reading this gem of a novel. Hope all readers, old and new, of GoDC have a blissful time reading this novel - as much as I did and still do.

For one, I am still as obsessed with The Untamed and this novel in 2022 as I was back in 2019. It may have been three years since I first stumbled upon the drama and read the novel, but this is one of my evergreen and favourite-EST BL novels - which, no matter however many times I re-binge-watch the drama and/or re-read the novel, both will never get old! Ever golden both will remain!

Wish everyone Happy reading! <<less

I avoided this novel for the longest time because of its incredible popularity, scared that I'll go in with too many expectations and be let down.

But this time around, I decided to go in blind and just let myself enjoy it page by page without worrying about the what-ifs and damn lmao. I can see why it's so loved. I liked the villains as much as I liked the protagonists because god, I am such a hoe for morally grey characters.
Spoiler

Despite all its tragedies, I didn't feel much sadness until chapter 110. When Jiang Cheng confessed his secret? That just did me in. Tears flooded out and suddenly everything was painful.

I don't get all the glowing reviews. MC is apparently a good guy necromancer who somehow got an undeserved bad rep by literally everyone in the world. Allegedly did mass slaughter yet is now shown to be willing to sacrifice himself to save his enemies (ugh). The mystery solving parts were nice but there is not enough of them.

It's the best thing I've ever read in my entire life.
No exaggeration...

At the beginning of the work we meet a character who is said to be the villain, as we read, we realize that he is not what the extras describe him. He's supposed to be the terrible Yiling Laozu, the founder of demonic cultivation (the name gives a little fear to the unknown, something we change our minds as we read), instead he's not evil at all as the stories say.
The plot is amazing, captivating, full of... more>> mysteries and we ask ourselves questions all the time. He's supposed to be the villain, but apparently he's not. The guy he says is his enemy doesn't seem to treat him like he's the enemy, and he's still helping him, why? What happened to him that he died? Who is responsible for the new deaths on the comeback? There were some questions I asked when I started reading the novel, and each answer given is more surprising than the other.

Wei Wuxian is the most charismatic protagonist you will meet in your life, his joy is captivating, in addition to being extremely intelligent without losing his humility, I would say that the most intelligent character in the novel and I think not all readers can see that, he it's just AWESOME, with all the letters in capslock, he was the reason I read and kept reading, I'll never find a protagonist as fun, kind, intelligent and selfless as he is... and Lan Wangji... I could pass by hours writing about Lan Wangji and it wouldn't be enough to express how much I love him and think he's amazing, he's the perfect match everyone hopes to have, a man with a priceless sense of justice and who gives himself body and soul to that one I love them so much, the story is perfect thanks to them, I just thank Mo Xiang Tong Xiu for writing this amazing work that made me cry a lot, laugh and wish to have a relationship like the WangXian. <<less

Absolutely amazing. My all time favorite *chef's kiss*

I loved every moment of this journey that the author takes us.

The writing can get a little bit confusing with the time switches at first, but it is done on purpose and I absolutely love the slow reveal of WWX and LWJ's past.

... more>> I get so invested into the side stories, and the mystery behind everything!! It's so fun to discover and then see how the relationship progresses.

And I love how everyone is written with so much emotion, and how you can see each character react or think based off of those emotions. I love how you can definitely see why the MC does what he does over time. The painting of a villain that does not seem like what it seems.

Oh and especially when you see the depth of the ML's love for MC, it is so heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. I love how the author can make me feel so many emotions from this novel.

I LOVE the ending. It's wrapped up in the way where there is mystery but also it feels absolutely satisfying to ponder and think about. And it kind of gives a little leeway to think about what possible trails and tribulations MC and the ML will go through in the future.

This story is an absolute gem. And I also highly recommend the audio drama because it follows the novel really well, and the VAs are absolutely amazing and talented. <<less
