The Legendary Mechanic

Description

What do you do when you wake up and find yourself inside the very game that you love?

What do you do when you realize you that you have not only become an NPC – you have even been thrown back in time to before the game even launched!

What will happen when our protagonist’s two realities coincide?

Han Xiao was a professional power leveler before his transmigration. Using his past life’s knowledge, Han Xiao sweeps through the universe as he prepares for the arrival of the players. This is definitely not your typical transmigration novel.

This is a great book. Reads like a real story instead of your usual run-of-the-mill-filler-sh*t web novels. The best part about the story is how real the MC is. The choices he makes, they're always what I would of done in that situation. It just feels nice every once in a while.

Of course it is "just" a powerfantasy, nothing super serious and the plots not that deep. Still it's exactly the type of reading that makes me bubbly with nice feelings and brings happiness.

This novel is one of my favourites, as of the moment.

We know the MC. His personality especially in regards to the other people could be better, but it was already established that it won't really change. So it's understandable. We can't expect all novels to focus on MCs and their relationships, so maybe stop hoping that there's gonna be any romance even hinted at. Either way, that wouldn't be the focus.

The plot is okay. It's clearly just MC lying down low for a while before he scams enough exp from... more>> the players to level up and beat the antagonists to death. Like any other novel. A protagonist losing to the antagonist wouldn't be a protagonist at all, unless it's a fanfic. But the world itself is very cool and fun. If only I could live to see the day that we can experience virtual reality the way these characters do :33.

It's a fun read, don't expect too much in regards to people unless we bring up their useful-ness in regards to making the MC stronger via exp. Just immerse yourself, I guess.

Thanks to the author, translator and editor! I hope you enjoy your works the same way we enjoy reading them. <<less

A lot more exciting in the beginning when the MC was weaker. A number of interesting milestones happens, such as taking a direct hit from a space battleship's main cannon (while nearly dying from it) because two higher ranked characters just could not kill him (due to a certain ability), turning an enemy into a friend and overcoming pretty ridiculous odds/enemies when you keep in mind the start of the novel.

Later on, when he is really powerful (SS level), he's a lot more into political considerations, scamming really powerful people... more>> and trying to lessen damage for a certain future event and thus his battles' are mainly beam spam from a robot army or using transformer style combiner tactics where individual robots combine into cybertron/unicron sized mechs (he did learnt a few martial moves including a thinly disguised hadoken).

This slows down the novel and slides into a more interaction style writing later on

Still overall, this is a good novel to read if you're the type who don't mind or can skip pass the occasional paragraph of stats

Update 1388: He finally gained the class that is the novel's name and its looking like this is the final arc

Update 1463: Novel completed. The final arc wasn't the last enemy but rather looks at the fundamental basis of the story. How and why did the MC get into the game and what to do about it.

Overall ending was ok. Earth will probably have to rely on MC's power to survive though and he did consider if humanity had the characteristics to survive transition into a interstellar collective (funnily enough, the answer was negative which I would agree with).

A good mention was the fact that his time in game (due to temporal distortion) is way way longer than his entire life on Earth and that really changes anyone's outlook, giving him the position of a more objective viewpoint <<less

This story is unbearable! The author fills chapters with pointless stats. It’s nothing but info dumps and a s*upid MC. The fighting scenes are horrible. The author is full of bs.

The story is really interesting and has PLOT, ACTUAL PLOT!

Its not filled with loopholes and really interesting with some humor and action. Everything is interesting and you can IMAGINE how everything is going onn and there is no bulletcrap atm.

I advise to read it yourself its really interesting.

... more>> Also all negative comments about that MC doesn't have any goal or he is loner and doesn't care about relationships, well its partly true. But still he is really cool and not some kind of cliche shitty heroe of another xianxia.

Everything is really nice and cool and there arent info dumps evry where. There aren't any shitty grind times or other sh*t tho. Just giy who wants to become the best and to sca.. *Coff* make good business deals <<less

What would you do if you woke up an NPC in the video game you were a former master player in?

What would you do if your game system still existed and you had the opportunity to grow stronger? What if you only had one life? How would you act?

These are the questions that our MC, Han, faces in the first moments of awareness. It is these questions we see answered from the rest of the story.

A lot of people say he's 2d in personality. But I feel like he's a... more>> gaming nerd that is terrible at expressing himself. On top of that, the author doesn't talk about feelings. Ever. Emotional states besides high tension situations involving battle don't really exist.

What we end up with is an MC who kicks butt, makes great machines and grows as fast as he can. He slowly discovers how he can utilize the "players" to increase his chances of survival in this world.

Spoiler

Looking back, the author was probably having Han act as he did and rush getting strength mainly because almost everyone on the planet dies in the original timeline because of a virus. It's the major plot point currently being discussed in chapter 300+. Han literally doesn't have the option to live a peaceful life. And so he doesn't. He makes the choice to become as strong as he can as quick as he can.

One of the best game transmigration novels I've read!

Like the summary said, the MC was a powerful player before he transmigrated into the game, so needless to say, the MC already have knowledge of the game's storylines, hidden quests, etc. But after the MC transmigrated, he lost his memories of his previous life and only remembers information about the game. Because of this, the MC's morals are a little lacking and can easily kill characters/players in the game. The MC transmigrates into a new character, an NPC within the game,... more>> and can initiate quests to players as well as sell weapons/teach new skills. Even though the MC goes from weak to strong, the process is actually fairly quick so as to push the plot forward. At the moment, the MC's main goal is to defeat the evil organization and build up his powers/weapons. The readers are essentially reading about how the MC grind for experience, skill points, and money while defeating higher leveled enemies. This may sound boring, but the action scenes and schemes in this novel are very intriguing.

There is a lot of info dump and some chapters are just full of the MC's stats and skill descriptions, so it's perfectly fine to skip some of those chapters as it's not necessary to the main storyline. There is no harem or romance so far, which is always a plus since I find most romance/harem distracting or completely unnecessary to the development of the plot, especially in plots similar to this one. Overall, I would recommend this novel for readers looking for a game transmigration plot + power struggles. <<less

This was an interesting read. It is perfect for passing the time. There were a lot of info dumps but you can just skip over then, won't affect the story at all. I think what I've liked the most about this novel was the lack of romance. Most stories, the romance usually ruins it for me cuz it isn't done well and I try my best to ignore it. So far, there's been no romance and I love it.

However, a con for me personally (this wasn't factored into the rating)... more>> is that the comment section on webnovel for this book is TOXIC! I am surprised the translator hasn't dropped this story, I mean wtf. The rudeness and entitlement just blows my mind. (The release rate is 1/day and half the comments complain it's slow.... WOW)

Anyways, I hope the TL knows that people actually like the novel. Don't stress out and translate at your own pace. Much love. <<less

I like everything except the in-game e-sports. In real life, e-sports tournaments typically restrict the participants' level, gear, or whatever else to promote fairness. That's not what happens here. The author has devised the most braindead system of e-sports where tournaments impose zero restrictions on participants in an MMO-style game; this is showcased by the sheer overwhelming advantage the Chinese players receive through gear and temporary buffs from the protagonist. This wouldn't be so bad if not for the annoying as f*ck nationalism.

Mediocre. Above mediocre at best. Classical good guy travels back into the past to fix the problems of the past. Even if the MC doesn't see himself as such and doesn't act it in the earlier parts, you'll come to realize that he is toward the mid-later parts.

There's not really a story or any overarching goal. He just reacts to the moment and focuses on getting stronger. But really, this is the goal of any MC. Nothing really sets him apart from any MC besides the fact that he's actually... more>> pretty funny and sarcastic during some moments but those comedic scenes will just make you go, "oh, that's a good joke" rather than actually make you lol. If you want something to genuinely make you choke on your spit, go read A Will Eternal. At first, I was a bit intrigued by the novel but it basically stayed the same. With things constantly going the MC's way. He comes out on top, this gets especially bad towards the point that I'm at in the novel. All his close friends make it out alive. And he's got a group of hot babes surrounding him. Like every other generic thing out here. At some point, you can tell the author was struggling to not turn this into a harem.

It's better than the average stuff you find on here, don't get me wrong. But shiny, crystalized sh*t is still shit. Even if at first, the glow makes you mistake it for a diamond. You'll eventually realize upon further investigation, it's just shinier, more pleasing to look at shit.

This really got me good. Over 900 chapters in and when I saw the MC deal with a bunch of things with no problem despite every party being far better prepared, I just realized that this was face slapping and MC halo packaged into decent world building to throw you off. <<less

I just finished reading the entire thing, and I have to say that it is one of the best novels I have ever read. I've been casually reading this novel over the past 11 months, and just thinking back on it makes me feel like I've experienced an entire lifetime of events through the MC's eyes. It gives me this incredible nostalgia, and I will never forget this journey.

Please don't just read the reviews that haven't even finished the novel before slapping a bad review on it, because there is... more>> so much that those readers are missing out on.

TLDR:

Just try reading this novel, even once. It's an incredibly unique and immersive experience. It grabbed my attention and I've enjoyed every moment of it, so I wholeheartedly recommend this novel to anyone who finds it!

I have a more comprehensive review below for the ones who want the details.

The real question: IS THERE ROMANCE?

  • There IS a little bit of romance in the story, but no harem. He gets together with one person, and one person only. (Something I appreciate after reading so many novels.) There's a clear differentiation between who the MC sees as a friend, and who he sees as family. It's an incredibly slow burn that lasts over the course of the entire novel, though, so if you want a lot of romance, you won't see it here.
  • The great thing about the romance is that the development is natural and smooth, with no dumb love triangles and unnecessary drama. The MC isn't an inexperienced wimp about romance either, so the development comes naturally. There are no weird nor oddly stuck out romance moments that have to be shoved in the reader's face.
  • It wasn't infuriating and boring to read at all, and I was practically rooting for the two to get together by the time I realized who the love interest was.
THE STORY:

Pros:

  • The world building is absolutely immense. The moment you start reading, you'll have a very good grasp on what type of world the MC is living in and what he has to deal with. You'll get immersed into it from the get go. It'll keep building upon itself with each arc, until you have a solid grasp of the entire universe itself; just as well as the MC does. This is incredibly hard to do, since the setting itself is a literal universe with a lot of solar systems and planets.
  • The novel's entire narrative storyline is set from the very first chapter. Every main story arc the reader will encounter over the whole 1463 chapters is teased very subtly right in Chapter 1. The author doesn't just make things up on the way, and it doesn't get too run down or repetitive as you read, either. The pacing is down to a T, and some chapters in this novel have some of the best narrative writing I've seen.
  • Old arcs always tie into later arcs and loop together, which makes the narrative development very smooth and coherent. The MC will recall older arcs from time to time as well, so he never forgets about them.
  • Old characters always come back at some point. They don't get discarded and forgotten forever. They may not have a lot of narrative influence then, but they do eventually come back at some point. Even if they are little glimpses from time to time, we get to see how they're faring over the course of the novel. Even characters from the very first arc are shown near the ending. Two characters especially stick by the MC from the very first arc and grow alongside him for the novel's entire duration.
  • The reason for the MC's transmigration is explained, and it isn't some crappy "The Gods/the system f*cked up and you were brought in by accident" type stuff. It's actually very integral to the overall storyline.
  • The final arc and the ending of the novel literally gave me goosebumps, like how reviewer VanNgJov described it. It was so damn incredible to read. There are virtually no plot holes left at the end as well. It feels like a natural end to the story. (I do hope some side stories can be made post-ending, though. I'd be all for that)
Cons:

  • A lot of exposition dumps here and there. Some of it is for world building, but other parts of it are frankly easy to forget. You might end up wanting to skim past those parts. I skimmed a few chapters to be honest, but it was still interesting enough to keep me reading.
  • At the beginning this isn't an issue, but later on, there isn't too much suspense built into the story. Oftentimes when a new character is introduced, especially villains, their entire profile is already given to the reader, which leaves no room for speculation or suspense. The reader is nearly omniscient in this sense. Keep in mind that this story is written to last a long time, so there ARE some parts that are kept a secret to the reader, only to be revealed much later on. (I figured that where the real suspense lies is in the unraveling of the entire game's plot over the course of the whole novel.)
Neutral comments:

  • This novel's narrative will focus more on the "NPCs" of the world, instead of the "players." The MC interacts with the players a lot in the first half of the novel, but much later on do they start to become a narrative side tool, and the focus is put on the NPCs. The NPCs are aware that the players are different from them, though, and that does influence the game's plot.
  • (Noted, there's also a main cast of players that the MC interacts with from time to time. They have their own character story that develops alongside the MC's, but it's not the main focus.)
  • The narrative will also focus more and treat the "game" as a separate world that the MC becomes accustomed to living in, to the point that he identifies more as a citizen of Galaxy than a transmigrated Earthling. It's about the MC trying to fight and live in his new world instead of a fun little adventure where he's just inside a game and can play it like the other players do.
  • In my opinion, this story is one that should be read with the perspective of experiencing the MC's life step by step, and what his overall choices and actions decide from beginning to end. It'll walk you through a whole century of events. It shows the people he meets and the people he fights, and how he interacts with them. His conflicts come in many sorts of ways, not just fighting, and the whole story focuses on what decisions the MC will make and how he can influence the overall world's storyline.

THE MC:

Pros:

  • The MC's decisions and motivations are written very coherently. No decision he makes or action he takes is without reason. He has clear goals and knows exactly what he needs to do in order to achieve them.
  • The MC's growth is documented from the very beginning to end. Every step of his growth is shown, and the struggles he faces are highlighted very clearly. He starts as weak and ends as strong, and the difficulties scale accordingly. His growth path is very smooth. The MC also values his time from when he was weak all the way to when he is strong, so he knows the importance of strength and values the process.
  • A few of my favorite chapters touch upon the MC's behaviors and thoughts about his growth from time to time, which I find is rare for a lot of novels. One thing that I love about his character is that he attaches a lot of importance to his humanity, especially after he grows strong. He never forgets his roots and how he was weak at the beginning of the story. He doesn't grow arrogant or greedy because of this.
Cons:

  • The MC's power growth starts to get more on the passive side later on due to his passive EXP farming method. If you're looking for a novel that strictly focuses on the MC's power growth and fighting abilities, this may not necessarily be for you. The later parts of the story also focus more on the geopolitical narrative setting and the nature of events rather than his combat growth.
  • (The focus of his abilities are more so that he's not just a good fighter, but he's also a good researcher, hacker, war strategist, and mechanic.)
Neutral comments:

  • The MC is morally grey and he knows it. Most of the things he does are mainly for his own self interest, and he doesn't hesitate to manipulate, imprison, or kill people. He'll sometimes even pretend to be on the morally righteous side, but do the dirty work under wraps or get others to do it. He will do whatever it takes to ensure his or his close ones' survival.
  • He'll often do things to get whatever he deems useful, but he also has good restraint to know when stepping back is the better choice. The people who know him well label him as a shameless opportunist, which is largely true, but most of his actions tend to collectively help others in the long run.
  • The MC's character development is pretty static compared to other characters, which might be a deal breaker to some. I didn't have much issue with it though, since he's already meant to be smart from the beginning. He's cold and calculative, and he stays that way. So he doesn't have the typical action MC's "big moments of developing new resolve to change themselves" and all that. He knows that change is gradual and welcomes it with open arms, so it's a lot more passive instead of being thrown in the reader's face.
  • The moments he has the most change is actually in the very later parts of the novel. Thus, many reviewers tend to write the MC off as a completely static character, which isn't actually true. On one hand, he becomes more calculating and ruthless as the story develops. On the other, he learns the value of having close ones, and he relishes more and more in his humanity. It's a more natural and realistic development that I really appreciate, and he feels more alive to me this way.

WRITING QUALITY:

These are just my 2 cents about it:

  • The translation quality is flawless at the beginning, but the word choice starts to get a little rickety after a few hundred chapters in. This is due to the novel getting handed over to different translators partway through. It's perfectly understandable to read, but a lot of Chinese idioms tend to get translated directly, which make no sense to English readers. So it's not the best in certain areas, especially if you're a nut for grammar. It's not bad to the point of being unintelligible, though.
  • A lot more s*xual innuendoes are made than I'd personally prefer there to be (which is frankly expected for Chinese novels), but they have no affect on the story. This is pretty much my own petty complaint about it. The weird thing is the author tends to make the MC slip in a lot of innuendoes when the MC's perception on reproduction itself is quite scientific and biological in nature. (It's understandable as to why it's there since it's supposed to be for humor, but the execution kind of falls flat since it clashes with the MC's personality.)
GENRE

  • This novel is pure sci-fi. No martial arts, no cultivation, no dynasty period settings, nor high fantasy. It's certainly a stick out among the countless Chinese wuxia and xianxia novels out there, but it's an incredibly fresh breath of air to read, especially among the VRMMORPG genre. I tend to read more fantasy or game-hunter novels, but I wholeheartedly enjoyed this novel's sci-fi elements. It cuts itself out from being different to other novels from beginning to end.

Absolutely amazing! It took me around two whole months to read this masterpiece and I kinda feel empty now lol.

Jokes aside, the novel is amazing. Really good writing, interesting storyline, amazing characters, just name it. There are a few things that could’ve been done better, but Overall, its amazing.

Its already a huge feat to write such a long novel, but the main point is that it remains good till the end. There are points where I was not all that interested in reading, but I kept going. I wanted to... more>> write a few pros and cons but I saw a few people already did that, so why waste time?

In all honesty though, if you’re having doubts, read it. <<less

The Legendary Mechanic summarized without spoilers is that a player from a popular full-dive VRMMO game one day finds himself not on Earth, but in the game. Han Xiao, our MC, uses his vast knowledge of the game to reach untold heights at astronomical speeds.

This story has been a pleasure to read, from the timely humor that always causes a chuckle, to the insane fights. Watching Han Xiao grow always kept me entertained.

In terms of character development, some important side characters, Hila and Aurora, etc., are given actual personality development.... more>> Han Xiao himself? His personality stays the same throughout the entire first 1300 chapters. The vibe I got from Han Xiao the entire webnovel was that of a prick. He never once acts out of kindness or seeks benefits for his "friends" as he calls them, every time he helps out a friend and gains their respect, it was always for his own benefit, and the friend appreciates him due to a misunderstanding. Near the end however, he very suddenly becomes much more human in terms of friendly banter and even simply appreciating his close friends who had been with him for many years.

Romantically, Han Xiao obviously refuses to engage in any act romantic or even sexual. Remember, he's apathetic and acts only for future benefit anywhere before chapter 1300. Of course, during his very abrupt change of heart, he decided he wants to create offspring. He decides to get intimate (very jarring seeing as this is not a gradual shift) with
Spoiler

Ames, though it SHOULD have been Hila

[collapse]
. Alas, though all signs pointed to this happening, the author simply did a 180. This isn't the only time either.

Now... The ending... The very ending (not the reveal or final arc, I mean the final few paragraphs, when
Spoiler

Han Xiao appears right next to the real Earth

[collapse]
, was pretty "cool" to me. I'd say I'm content with the way it ended, although there is a glaring problem with it, Han Xiao did NOT actually solve the final, big bad problem. You'll know if you finish the story. This leads to a "choose your ending" kind of afterstory, not cool.

As for the truth/explanation behind why Han Xiao was transmigrated, it barely makes sense and leads to a few plot holes.

Another problem is that the role the players take in the story and galactic society are built up highly, then suddenly dropped and almost ignored when the author realizes how he wants to end the story. It's foreshadowed many times how the players will "shake the galactic society" by growing stronger. This doesn't happen, they are only somewhat under the spotlight, and not near the end.

All in all, great read if you ignore the plot holes, wobbly storytelling and a small amount of wasted potential. Go for it! (Also check out Oni no Ouji's review, it touches on some things I didn't, and is honest) <<less

I have no words to enjoy the joy and happines when reading this but this is one of the best if not legendary novel I have ever read. Hats off to the author.

  • if you want the novel to be comical you have at each and every chapter.
  • if you want action you can have it for each and every legendary wars like world tree invasion, germinal war, etc.
  • if you want sci-fi you f*cking have it
  • but it lacks a bit on somethings like romance and explaining on some some stuff at the end even with some analogies.
  1. Spoiler

what is the name of your daughter han xiao?

    [collapse]
  2. Spoiler

the rules of the world where han was transported had rules and information different to main universe, so now that han has come to main universe what would happen to his strength would it increase or decrease

    [collapse]
But I had to tell I had this novel's nevel equal to omnipotent reader, tr*sh of count's family, solo levelling, etc. Because even though this novel was complex and has left many loose ends it still manages capture you and still is realistic in showing humans emotions and situations compares other novels.

And if I did make some mistakes on my reviews please forgive me.

I like the story even though it's kinda typical rebirth to game's world. Maybe somewhat unique is he becomes an NPC not the usual player although he has the same game interface like player. He started not too OP. But he got through his way by stealing other people talent / ability and of course the MC also smart

Pro

  • Great world building
  • Good game system class and game play
  • Great MC
  • Happy ending and the mystery he's become an NPC is solved
Con

  • Although romance is not the focus of the story, but it kinda feels bad for Hilla, Aurora, and other girls

The beginning was rather tedious to read - it feels like an info dump, especially with every game action being described in detail.

After I got through the first arc though, I began enjoying the novel more and more. Each arc is better than the previous one. I laughed a lot at the mc's snark.

This novel is good if you want to read about an OP MC who has future knowledge. For me, I read this novel for smart plays and indulgent snark from the MC. I wasn't overly invested with... more>> the characters and the world in the beginning, even if the concept is interesting. Though, as I approach the end, I found that I've gone attached to the MC very much, and am now sad that I finished the novel. <<less

Overall a good read, I would give it a 3.5, but since I unable to I tend toward 4 (mostly because it stands out more in comparison to the other crap that goes around)

Genre (those that actually have an impact) : second-chance / game system / trasmigration / powerleveling

  • (+) The pacing does a decent job alternating between speed ups, to avoid dragging, and slower sections, to allow for more descriptive sections and background stories, which create a more immersive environment for the reader.
  • (-) The side characters aren't usually one-dimensional and have some flavours to them, altough, due to the MC powerleveling, they keep being left behind without any conclusion for the reader. This is the main downside of this novel: from begining to end we get introduced to an incredible number of characters, most of them get some good build up, interests, motivations, actions, decisions, but they all end up fading away bit by bit before they can reach a personal climax.
  • (-) There is a general mold with which every conversation is created, this gets tiring pretty fast due to the real complexities of interactions between different peoples, especially when they are exacerbated by differences in social standing. This point might bug you a bit but, I don't believe it will be to the point of being a dropping point
  • (+) The story plot is quite nice and even the end isn't out of nowhere, there are some good twists and it keeps you coming for more. I believe that it ended just at the right point, more than that and it would have wore out the reader

One of the very few where the ending actually makes sense. The author explained everything in the end and it was like pieces of puzzle stitching themselves together to form a complete picture. Some might disagree with me but imo I like this kind of ending way better than unfinished endings.

Not gonna talk about the starting or the quality of the novel... we all know it amazing... for these kinds of novel, it is generally the ending which decides the overall picture.

This is so interesting. Characters are well made. The MC's plot armor is so thick that you can see he only has 1 luck in his stats but basically get every rare skills of his enemies just by touching someone with high luck lol that's pretty shitty but well his tactics are beautifully done

Good story, only problem is that the main character has a lack of intrest in other characters. Makes the story very bland.
