What to say about this novel... It was so good then it steadily went downhill to the point where I'm unsure if I will read the last 300 or so chapters anytime soon. To summarize my experience reading this novel, it was a good read for the first 1900-2200 chapters, but as it progressed, it got noticeable worse, although still not being terrible by any means. By the mid-to-late 2000s, it was almost as if the author got bored or was writing just to write rather than make a compelling... more>> story.

Now that I took a step back from the novel, the more I think about it, the more disappointed I am about how the story developed and the wasted potential. The next paragraph contains slight spoilers to a few events later in the novel, making my point clearer.

One of the most disappointing factors for me was the romance. The romance basically went like this: they meet, she was rude to him, he impresses her, they date, he keeps on impressing her with his mind-boggling talent, they get married, they have kids. The reason I am disappointed in it is that it is truly all that happens... The girl isn't especially likable or unlikeable; she is just a character. Nothing was interesting about her character. It wasn't compelling and honestly didn't make much sense in hindsight.

The second disappointing thing is the side characters. From the beginning part of the novel, you think the side characters will play an important role throughout the whole process, and for the beginning portion of the novel, that is more or less correct, but as I said, it's like the author got bored. At some point, the side characters are cast aside. The story mentions them by saying something like, "Oh yeah, so and so progressed unreasonably fast as well, and they are now super strong and are doing whatever tf" *now back to another random event*. Even the girl you think would be his love interest at first (btw, she was more interesting and compelling than who he chose) pretty much gets delegated to being a secretary and running one of the areas he controls while he is off doing things and gets mentioned just as little as the rest.

and these are just two of the disappointing developments...

To sum it all up, it has an okay start and a really good early-mid until it steadily declines to become less than average. As you near the end, you come to realize that half the things that happen in the story really don't matter. At most, I would recommend this story as a casual read because I wouldn't say any part of it was especially bad, but it turned out just meh.

(P.S. the author has a newer novel called Let Me Game In Peace, and so far, it is a lot better) <<less

The main character is as intelligent as the author requires him to be. That means, the author plotted things out in an outline, and when he couldn't organically wiggle his character into the highlighted plot point, he simply turned the MC into a raging idiot to proceed. At one point, the character literally shouts, "YOLO!" before doing something monumentally s*upid (although that could've been the translator's fault, but the sentiment was still written by the author), and of course, he's saved by plot armor. Speaking of plot armor, there is... more>> a lot of it. I've seen more deus ex machinas in this novel with his pets evolving right on time than I've witnessed in my whole lifetime of reading.

There's just so many things wrong with the novel. The love interest comes out of left field, and she's as 2-dimensional as a rectangle. She only exists to boost the MC's status and occasionally tease the reader with some humpy-humpy time. Characters are constantly left behind and forgotten. The MC doesn't want to kill and farm beasts for beast souls because the droprate is too low??? This guy is described as insatiably greedy, but he doesn't even kill all the super beasts he sees to sell their essences.

Anyway, there's the usual face-slapping, young masters, identity-hiding, peanut gallery commenting, etc. That comes with a lot of CN webnovels, but mostly for the first 700 chapters or so. If you enjoy those tropes, you'll love the beginning. Solid 4.5/5 for the start, but a solid 1/5 after he enters the 3rd shelter (near the 1, 000s or so). <<less

Its kinda amazing how much worse this is compared to author's newer novel (Let Me Game in Peace). I read that first, came here and was disappointed with this novel. However, I will give praise to author for improving in pretty much every aspect of writing.

Lets start with positives here:

I really enjoyed MC going on fun adventures outside and fighting against beasts and getting their souls and unique abilities. The world building is decent and there's a lot of cool stuff going on with the genes, etc. The pacing is... more>> also good.

Sadly almost everything else is a negative. This is a turn off your brain and read novel.

OP MC that's good at everything, lots of face slapping moments, MC hiding his abilities and everyone shitting on him cuz they think he's weak, random people trying to kill MC for the slightest thing (dudes literally try to kill MC because he talks to a girl they aiming for), random ass audience members watching and commenting on every since thing MC does and doubting him (~20% of the novel) <<less

No matter what the other reviews say, I'll still state my honest opinion. This is probably my favorite novel of all time, it has a good mixture of mystery (not small time ones, almost only really late game stuff), as well as a relatively OP MC (he keeps becoming OP, moving to a harder place where he is weak, and the becoming OP again, but it's down well), mostly everything is original names are cool and not the typical overused BS that is everywhere. While the MC is OP, he... more>> mostly acts like a relatively normal person, he cares for his family, and he doesn't just trust people needlessly.

All in All, this is a story that has basically everything and does it well, heck, it made me read 1500+ chapters of horrible machine translation just because I couldn't wait for the updates. One last thing, the story has humor as well, while it isn't a main theme, it is most certainly there, which is quite obvious with one of the first few chapters being called "ass freak" <<less

First 200 Chapters I got kinda irritated by how he was acting but it was still readable, after chapter 200 it got a lot better but most people because people think he acts like a robot, what I don't understand because this MC actually uses his brain! Amazing right? You don't see that everyday in a novel xd. I enjoy it so far so I'm giving it a 4* for now since the first 200 chapters are ok but not noteworthy.

WARNING;- This comment contains spoiler.

I've got only one word Boring.

The MC has no f*cking reason to get stronger.I mean, people get stronger to gain fame, to have better life, to accomplish something which needs strength. Now here, the MC doesn't want fame, already have a very good life and after he became a God in Sanctuary he doesn't have any anything to accomplish so why the f*ck he wants to get stronger. Everything is safe in sanctuary as no one stronger than God rank can come here so it's not... more>> like his life is in danger or anything yet he wants to get stronger. This should have been the end of the story, It would've been perfec but the author can't let a good novel remain good he wants it to go to drain. He added Genoverse just to lengthen the story and it truly gets boring after he comes into Genoverse.

The story had a lot of potential but, the MC is truly naive and I can't understand why the author forces things in the novel.

In the starting it is fine to use a different identity as Dollar because he didn't have a good background but seriously even after he got powerful he still uses the same Dollar identity which got very popular in the alliance just by doing some petty things whereas the MC using his real identity has done many good things yet it popularity can't compare to Dollar. <<less

Pretty decent novel. Has its plot conveniences now and again, but if you can ignore that, it’s a good time waster.

It doesn’t use the “meet arrogant person, which attracts another arrogant person, etc.” format to pull the story. Some do show up but get put in their place quickly (except Moment Queen, she should’ve got killed the first moment he was betrayed)

Han Sen’s main objective is to get stronger, and he keeps at that goal the whole story and he only keeps one wife the whole story

The world revolves... more>> around the main character in this novel, like in all of these types of novels. Time skips for 10 years yet MC is still the strongest

He actually cares about his family and strives to become stronger to make a safer place for them. And by caring, I mean he actually remembers they exist from time to time in between adventure arcs.

Which is better than some other Chinese novels where they’re abandoned until a brief moment at the end where they get mentioned

Was pretty entertained in the majority of the novel. Would say this is an above average novel compared to other 2000+ chapter novels where its the same carbon copy formula villian every time. At least I can differentiate villains in this novel. <<less

The only thing interesting about this novel is the idea of integrating sci-fi and cultivation.

To someone like me, who loves action-adventure type novels and does not care much about complicated storylines, this novel should have been a blast. But, there are some extremely large plotholes that I cannot ignore and make me drop it.

1. In the 1st Sanctuary, I remember that when the MC first encounter the super crystal, it was a crystal that was spat out by a first generation super creature. MC has no problem consuming it by... more>> licking the crystal. Then, in the 2nd sanctuary, when MC encounter another super creatures, he complained that he could not consume 1st generation crystal like he did before. Why? Because other people have also found super crystal and could not consume them. There is a very good way to patch that up if the author have just said that the Dongxuan Sutra is the one that gave him the ability to consume the crystals by licking it.

2. Han Sen acts like a Simp when it is things concerning his gf/wife but then acts like a Casanova when she his not around.

3. The author makes the MC a genius in everything when the introduction we get during the first few chapters makes him look like a pathetic, untalented guy. And the explanation we are given for his amazing abilities is that his mom played "Red Hands" with him during his childhood.

4. In the early chapters, the author said that the MC's Mom is a person who is incapable of doing daily chores and is such a princess. A couple hundred chapters later, we then saw that the Mom is such a badass and is the daughter of a Demi-God capable of slaughtering people easily.

5. This one is a problem that I see in most, if not all novels including some good novels, the people that are close to the MC are advancing too fast in their cultivation. An example would be that Qin girl, in the 3rd sanctuary, she was able to slay mutant creatures easily by herself not long after she ascended ignoring the fact that there are decades old veteran who could not even slay ordinary creatures.

6. Children. Not that I hate kids or anything but in almost every novels I have read, whenever an MC has a child, they become absolutely overpowered. This is understandable to an extent since they are the offspring of a powerful individual. But here, their freaking kid got a fitness level of over 100 and over 200 (I think) if he enter Super king spirit body when he is just a day old. This fitness level is higher than all evolvers who has maxed out on several Geno points. This is too absurd, this means that if you throw this kid as soon as he was born into either the first or second Sanctuary, he would be able to slaughter every creature, including super creatures without even breaking a sweat.

7. The story after sometime becomes too repetitive. There is nothing novel and new after the second sanctuary. And in the fourth Sanctuary (this is the last sanctuary that I could persevere to before finally dropping it) it is all just like Pokemon except that the pokeballs are inside the soul sea and the monsters are actually weapons such as rope, scissors, wheels, etc.

So, like most CN novels, good and bad, this story is readable upto about a 1000 chapters. <<less

It's actually good. Some plot devices may seem repetitive, but the actions of the MC lead to these plot devices being activated and being a necessity (i.e. Hiding his identity)

World building aspects so far is magnificent, and with what I have read, can be divided into two stages: the sanctuaries and the geno universe (revealed past chapter 1500-1600, iirc)

The MC is basically pushed by an unseen hand (not the author) but someone in the shadows, to basically develop and become strong.

The novel is good for me. But I dont like the fact that the MC always wanted to show off. And if the Jadeskin was really a technique from a powerful clan, that clan should actually have already know and discover that the MC was using their own technique, because Im sure that the clan would also have many experts that known and also practiced the technique. And if not, then he is freaking lucky. And I think that the MC was not really that talented, its only because he... more>> have the bead and jadeskin that he was able to actually get in his position. Because if he's that talented, I think he should not in the blackbettle"weakest creature" territory, in the first chapter. In fact I think that he really became talented because the Jadeskin improve all of his abilities. And thats why I think that he's just freaking lucky. And he's too careless. Many of the life and death scenarios was like forcefully added and after that was the typical scene of other novels. After life and death was a huge reward. Its also like many other chinese novel that the MC was hard-working person with a great luck that found a cheat like item and power. The heck, why do I feel like that the many chinese MC just relied in cheats to become strong, and became arrogant and always showing off. Sigh, I hope that even if they have cheat like powers and luck, they should have a good attitude, but the MC here was always showing off, to the point of being too careless. The heck, the MC is not even been in the God's Sanctuary in 1 yeat, but he already learnt to read his opponents move to the point of being OP? And the author actually emphasize that its the talent that the MC acquired by soloing in there? No, I dont think that he is that OP, its also because of the improved geno points and also because of his Jadeskin that he have a powerful senses, so it was attained by his luck not by talent. Because if he really have this OP judgement talent in the beginning, then he would not be in the Black Beetle Territory in the first place, he should be in a a bit powerful monster territory. And the fact that the MC could easily read the opponents intention was already the proof that the characters in the novel are all simple minded hahahah.

And all of the characters in this novel were all simple-minded, they did not even know how to scheme. In fact if there was a goodschemer in any of the enemy of the MC, Im sure the MC would easily died. Why? Because the MC was too careless, he always wants to showoff to the point that all of the spotlight was always on him, and if there were any good schemer there, they would do their best to recruit him to the point of resulting to threats, and were sure that the MC would not agree because he thinks that he's invincible in the First God Sanctuary, but what about outside? They can recruit a veteran assassin or sniper, and even if they could do nothing to the MC, what about his family! But what can we do, if you read the novel carefully, you can conclude that the author was a simple-minded person that doesn't even know how to scheme, because if you actually read it carefully, all of the tricks of MC was simple. And you can guess the mindset of an author based on his novel. Great novel but somewhat ruined because of the s*upidity of the MC, characters, and author. <<less

I have really enjoyed reading Super Gene, its fresh and enjoyable and has enough variety to not make it stale.

The characters tend to have long story life and don't just disappear into the ether never to be seen again after a few chapters or an arc. (Though some do but they are minor and bringing them forward would serve no purpose)

The translation does have some issues, mostly to do with certain terms changing midway through the story (a few hundred chapters in one of the Gene types changes from... more>> Primitive to Ordinary)

I just hit the third arc and for some reason I'm just not feeling it any more, its probably more to do with me being at 900 chapters than anything else. There are some times where I feel the story slows down more than it needs to be and a lot of times it feels like even the author has no idea of how his weapon tier structure goes. Switching back and forth between Z-Steel and Beast Soul weapons is jarring and weird at times. <<less

This story was great for about the first 800 chapters
Spoiler

unlike most I did not have a problem with the beginning of the third sanctuary. I was annoyed with the fruit and all, but liked the spirt duals. Sadily he just jumped from like 3 gene locks to 9. Also, Angel is still evolving. Additionally, he loses all his power just because he does not want to accept others help.

Overall, just drop the story around chapter 800, if you want to have good memories of the story.

I'm split between calling it a great bad novel or a bad average one. Or maybe its just so average its bad? Something like that I guess.

If you want to know what the novel is approximately about read till the end of the 1st Sanctuary/School arc (and maybe the beginning of military life. After that its mostly a reshufle/reiteration of similar situations/concepts/enemies/abilities/enemies/pretty much everything, the amount of novelty is very little. Or said in other words 3100 chapters in 2-3 years. I even managed to make a mock-up checklist to... more>> know when MC will advance to the next sanctuary. As long as everything on the list has appeared in some form, he's good to go. (Not talking about just getting sufficiently powerful). Past the first sanctuary the world also became a bit flat/too convinient.

Spoiler

To the point in the 3rd sanctuary spirits were racing against each other who'd deliver him 'low-end' genes first...

[collapse]

Some chapters could pretty much be just plainly skipped and you wouldn't miss a single thing.

They're mainly about (pre fight with audience:) "Omg, he's such a looser; No way is he gonna win", alternatively "MC is so strong, but that other guy is even stronger.." etc and post chapter "I told you $ gonna win." etc. You know, the usually word-count stuffing. Sometimes (in other novels) the author (s) have managed to get me to the point of laughing about those dialogues, but in this one I'm starting to think author has a copy/paste cheat sheet for these stuff... They. Sound. Too. So. Generic!

Final:

Writing is not bad and not great, translation is more on the not great side (, at least past 300-400-600). World building is mostly fine, world development is mostly not fine. characters dialogues are mostly fine, characters initiatives could be illogical, irrational, out of character or simply nonexistent. Introducing new content is mostly nonexistent. <<less

This novel is not a great novel but it sure is fun to read. The world building is amazing and easy to understand. I like how each arc is short. Meaning that we don't have to waste reading 50 chapters for a single tournament arc. However because of the short arc and the pace of MC moving from place to place, some things are not explained fully. And the MC interaction with other supporting characters seems superficial.

Romance is not that great but at least it's not a harem. MC flirt... more>> here and there but he's still faithful to his girlfriend. I personally like how he doesn't always get whatever lucky encounter he got. Sometime he needs to get back to camp and grow stronger, sometime the item got stolen by other powerful creature. But I agree, the MC have ridiculous luck but it's the same with thousand other xianxia MC anyway.

Overall a good novel to read if you're sick with cultivation novels. Not having a harem is a big plus for me. <<less

I found other reviews quite accurate. Most of them are bad ones though. But I am still continuing to read this because I am still interested at what would happend.

My review about this novel is that its progression of events is as monotonous as ever and the development of MC is unexisting as possible. The MC even felt like a side charac to me sometimes. This sounds like a novel with a 1 star..

What made me continue reading this is because of the genes..... Not really but it is the... more>> whole setting and the system of the world. I'm a watwulducoldat a hooker or something for settings that's so somehow complete and detailed. It might seem full of plot holes but I really don't care about that unless it dawns on me really hard. The fight scenes are good and the creatures are better. The school arc was nice. I don't feel the filler that much. The power system is interesting. The other character have problems too basically life. Imo the chapters have passable quality individually.

So this novel's bad points is as clear as daylight so it may irk those who may feel that it can be done better and the rating it has is as accurate as what an editor would give to an author.

And as I am writing this.. It dawned on me that the MC really doesn't have a personality at all. He is like a question asked an answer given to me. Oh what the hel I'll just replace him with Gintoki in my mind. <<less

i understand the hand speed thing since he practiced the hell out of it but in archery he was good but not great and yet now he's a genius. and the black and white hand to hand fighting that was never mentioned before he went to the school.... yeah, he's a genius in that too. and in controlling mechas/ warframes (which barely get mentioned again for hundreds of chapters after graduation). what ever else you can think of.... he's probably a genius there as well.

I do have to say that I was mostly enjoying the read but once the MC's

Spoiler

son is stolen "for his own good" I got pissed off and my interest bottomed out. I started skipping chapters because I wanted to see the MC retrieve his child and stopped caring about the getting stronger and the adventures. sadly, from what I can see he doesn't get his kid back until well into the 3000s.

I really wish they would have just kidnapped his wife instead, she's an adult and can take care of herself. the cat stealing the MC's small son was the worse kind of betrayal (like a child being kidnapped by an extended family member in the rw). my anger at the whole thing surprised me and to be honest, I completely lost all motivation to read further. I just don't care anymore.

I may come back at another time and try it again, or maybe I'll just reread through his time in the sanctuaries and then stop when he gets to the 5th. I would give up to the 5th sanctuary a 3.5-4 and after mostly a 3. <<less

chapter 1195. Overall rating of 1/5

considering this is about 6x longer than war and peace and if you read the first 200 chapter you already know the repeating pattern.

the writer spend 30 chapters in opening up to 9 gene lock then reverted it back again to level 4
the writer was shameless enough to spend a lot of chapters in reopening the once open now close gene lock.
everyone is aware of the formula the writer is doing. 1. Go on adventure 2. Get item pets and skills. 3. Use the acquired skills twice or thrice and invent some skill out of his ass. 4. Be a little bit weaker in majority of mc's opponent and use plot armor to win the fight. (If this is mmorpg mc' will fail most of the time if not using some plot armor, it is frustrating why not make the MC stronger than his opponent- the writer wouldnt because its easier to create chapter after chapter and notmoving the story forward using this trick.

also MC started up very poor despite his mother one of the strongest in the world that could perhaps help him jumpstart his strength. If the MC havent discovered a bug he will be forever weak because his mother is s*upid and he has poor decision making skills specially in fights.

This is a prime example of someone mistakenly writing a novel when they should be dungeon mastering a TTRPG instead. All the individual arcs of this story have oodles of creativity in the details, but the overarching story has so little coherence that it feels like the author decided to drop one story to start another without actually changing stories. The MC is a trickster archetype, which can be very fun and funny at times, but unfortunately he's also essentially a sociopath, and even people who approach him in good... more>> faith end up getting robbed and taken advantage of more often than not. Even the people who manage to stay in the story long term only follow him for lack of a better place to be, it feels like.

As for the overarching story, it's a form of secrets within secrets conspiracy thing where hints get dropped and then forgotten, and things stay unanswered for so long that I suspect the author actually didn't know how he planned to resolve them himself when they were first introduced. This is further reinforced by the way that major antagonists will appear, get built up for multiple arcs, then suddenly vanish forever with no resolution (looking at you, God Organization, Fox Queen, that one god figure with the Golden Crow egg, the Asura Empress, and many more).

Characters play major roles in arcs and get set up to be recurring only to disappear when the author forgets them or realizes he doesn't have anything for them to do anymore. The only consistent ability the main character has is his godlike predictive abilities, which is fun but overplayed.

But all of this is minor in the face of the book's ending, which without spoiling anything I will just say resolves almost nothing and feels like the author just got tired of writing, and the epilogue which goes even further to take what little resolution there was and spit on both it and whatever pleasure you may have taken in the main character and his primary relationship.

If you desperately need a time-waster that will keep you mildly engaged and don't care about the rest, go ahead and read this. Otherwise, avoid it, because whatever promise you think it might have at the start, it doesn't keep. <<less
