The Lazy King

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

By the time I realized it, I had reincarnated into another world.

I kept sleeping, and at some point I became a Demon Lord.

Even though I never wished for it.

But for me to not have to work, this world is the best. It must be true that good things happen to good people.

The flavor of Sloth is as sweet as honey. Glory, diligence, virtue, or honor. I have no interest in anything like that.

What’s there to hide? The Lazy king is… none other than me.

Sigh...

The story has an interesting premise and its hilarious start was showing a lot of promise, but the further into the story, the higher my irritation grew. By the end of 11th chapter I couldn't bear with it anymore and decided to drop it.

The author is too incapable. The world building here is so sloppy and illogical it makes you wonder if the author even put any effort into it.

With the setting like this the whole demon world should've self-destructed long ago. The stronger the demon, the more insane he... more>> becomes, with their leaders being nothing short of complete psychopaths. And the only thing they care about are themselves. Nothing is said about how the demon society is supposed to work in this conditions.

If you want to see how a good world building based on the demons and 7 sins could be like, try reading the novel 'Demon king and hero'. Though the author is a troll and ruined novel's ending, its start was good and the world building is decent. (The weakest but also the most fearsome of the 7, The Demon King of Greed a.k.a King of Economy! Nobody dares to offend him because he will cut down your finances!)

Forget about demon lord of economy here, there were no characters even remotely interested in something other than fighting or their original sin in this whole novel. Administrative work? Finances? Agriculture? Nah, nobody gives a f*ck here. Everything keeps working somehow just because author never said anything about it))))) 000

Because of this the plot is stalled and completely one-dimentional. Some nobody attacks MC's territory, after it MC is ordering his subordinates to attack someone else. Then some random demon lord is passing through his territory, and after him his subordinates duke it out among themselves. The winner goes against MC. This is what first 8 chapters are about. Guess what is coming next? Damn right! More fighting! The appearance of the angels! Obviously they are coming to fight against the demons.

Every chapter author has to pull something new and incomprehensible out of his a*s to forcefully keep the story going.

All the dialogues, monologues, inner thoughts, etc are centered around strength, how to become stronger, or how to advance your level of sin so you can become stronger. Ironically, the descriptions of this are of a pretty low quality too. I mean, the whole level/skill system is a complete drivel here. Nothing is described for certain, we do not know the amount of skills every sin skill tree should have or what are the prerequisites to achieve higher level. Everything is vague. Just like the author's IQ. You can feel it vaguely between 60 and 80 but can't say anything for sure. And author is using this vague situation to add more and more crap into the story even though it makes no sense.

There was a 'general'-level character. This character was introduced under a specific sin. But it suddenly turned out that this was a cover of the other sin's skill tree. And as if it's not enough, this character is adding the second sin to its own path later on. This was described in a dramatic fashion coupled with a lot of inner musings, all in the pursuit of strength. Some nice twists here, right? But the thing is, all of this nonsense above changed nothing. The character is useless from start to finish. It is purely the author's fault though. Because for some random reason the sins are not of an equal standing. All this drama is made to liven somehow this one-dimentional plot.

And I particularly disliked how the sins are so imbalanced. The sins of Sloth, Lust and Envy are basically useless and their wielders are usually despised by everyone else. There are some powerful individuals among the demon lords with this sins (2 by the end of 11th chapter), but that's it. Please show some imagination, author!

Was there even a need to make this mess? I am so irritated because all of this is so easy to fix.

You can increase sloth's activity by prolonging time needed to level up. To fix the issue with lust you can take away the standard stasus resistance from demons, give them the ability to ignore this resistance as a sin's special feature, or give them talent in magic. Envy is a bit harder but ability to transform into others or using other sins' skills without useless limitations but in a somewhat weaker version will do the trick.

Instead of creating absurd twists to the story it will be easier to make characters interested in something besides strength, or just make them less insane. It will easily rise the novel's quality. You don't need to be a genius to think of this either.

I am using this review as a way to release my pent-up frustration. So if you find it edgy or whatever, you are probably right. And yeah, I am feeling much better after writing all of this. <<less

One of the best ive read imo

I feel like the author was too good at what he is doing

I am no expert, so I dont know, how objective I am being right now

... more>> Personally, after reading it, I became sad, depressed even.

It's a story about an eternal creature, the saddest and most lonely creature, who just keeps on living.

There is not much more to it.

The story is mostly told by other people, what they see and have seen and obviously very few times had I felt it doesnt express the feelings of the person that talks well enough.

I am not even sure why I am writing this, it doesnt feel like this is a review good enough.

I can just say, that this is definitely worth reading. <<less

Almost nothing happens... So how did it make me laugh!?

Tears!? Why!?

It hurts that it's so short! It's sweet that it is so condensed!

Betrayal, love, despair! Why!

Read this and join my pain.

The characters are interesting. The writing style is fantastic and captures the different personalities from different characters' POV's brilliantly. The world-building is awesome and creative.

Yet I can't bring myself to truly love this story.

Why? Because of the plot. It's essentially a non-story. Nothing matters at all in anything that happens, and the author hammers this concept into us the entire way through. We know our MC doesn't care, but it feels like the MC doesn't care so much that we don't care either.

The whole story is covered by the blanket... more>> of the MC's perspective... It's too easy to not care about anything that happens. The unique perspectives and actions of the characters, the creative world-building, the interesting movements of various entities in the world... What would normally be a blast to read has all of its excitement washed out.

I wouldn't even call this slice of life personally, which often has a lot of humour and/or cute fluff. There's a small amount of it here but not enough to warrant a special mention. It's more like important stuff happens that we should probably care about, but because of the tone of the MC and story in general we don't.

The story ends on pretty much the same note as the entirety of the story, which is that while big things do happen, ultimately our MC will
Spoiler

remain an eternally powerful, invincible being and, again, nothing will matter.

Even if the author intended something like this, it simply can't be that entertaining of a story because of this fatal downside. It also seems like there could have been a third part and more, but this story appears finished for now. What a shame. <<less

He really is the true embodiment of Sloth having the purest sin out of all the Seven Deadly Sins that other demons doesn't really innate to them at all. He embrace his sin, accepted, deal with it to the purest of all for more maybe a million years in the Demon World as maybe he is a primordial being before the rise of other demons to power and survival. It is likely there has never been a deity in that world I mean the Demon World. After all like the... more>> Demon World is the opposite mirror of Heaven that came out of nothingness and existed balancing out good and evil. And for the first time the Lazy King became the first "God or Evil God" in the Demon World. I wish the Author would continue this fabulous amazing story he created far much better than other jp novels I've read as it not always focus on the MC but also to multiple characters with there personality, experience and there identity.

Please author continue this story. Damn, this novel is truly interesting!!! <<less

There is a reason The Lazy King has so many positive reviews compared to the negative review. If you just want the usual main character protagonist then this is not for you. The focus of this story is on the side characters that revolve around the main pillar that is Leige. Leige is a finished character and he will not really grow as a character anymore. He is the string that connects other characters and their action. This is a good read if you are willing to read about side... more>> characters. <<less

Well, the other reviews pretty much describe the novel, but I want to add something that I don't know if it's really a spoiler or not: the novel isn't a whole story: sure, until the end we get the feeling that we're nearing the last fight, ... more>>
Spoiler

and that's exactly what we get

, but it's the end for our protagonist: the other characters are left doing what they were doing, parallel to the protagonist.

The only clue we get to their fates is in the last chapter,

where the author leaves us with the foreshadowing of a Great War, involving everything and everyone, except for our protagonist, who is simply too great (and not only strong, read the comment of Nickthequick in the last chapter to know what I mean) and, most importantly, is sleeping.
So the whole story is just a prologue to this Great War.

I read this novel years ago and enjoyed it, I just decided to reread it this morning and I have a couple of thoughts about it now that I have more novels under my belt.

First of all it's a decent novel, the characters are what make it good both naritivly and stylistically, the fact that we can get an in depth view of each characters perspectives in each chapter Is this novels strength.

However, this strength also becomes its weakness in the second volume, in the first volume it's great because... more>> all the povs crescendo into a nice ending (I think when I first read it the second volume wasnt released for a while, so it seemed like a nice small story), but in the second volume this gets tedious as it takes away from the existing parts of the story and imo it would have been better to have had smaller chapters or multiple povs in one chapter, as it gets tedious to read 4 chapters of a character that isnt as interesting or naritivly important. <<less

This novel is quite well translated, also it isn't as short as it seems, the two volumes are about the same as a 600 page book. An important point is that this novel is unique, I haven't read something even remotely similar in the web-novel genre.

What it attempts to do is very ambitious, but I think it ended in failure. Also, it seems the story isn't entirely complete and it is practically discontinued.

Honestly, I think the author was trying to tackle some psychological and social issues such as depression (sloth)... more>> and obsession (lust) in a fantasy setting, the first volume sort of works, but the second doesn't make sense, even in a fantasy context.

From here on I will collect my thoughts and there will be some spoilers, but they aren't really important.

Spoiler

Why I think things don't really make sense ?

For example, it is unclear why so many people develop such loyalty to Liege, it seems he truly doesn't care about anyone else, at all. So why would any other person care about him ? And why so many ?

Heard is probably the only one I could somehow understand. Lorna might have been raised to be co-dependent by the cult from the next volume that won't be released. Kanon makes the least sense, she is simply a Bro-con ? How did this anime "just for laughs" meme get into this story ? It doesn't fit, but it has major effects in the story.

The one that wants to be a pillow is even weirder and her story arc is just all over the place and goes nowhere. One could imagine her as the type of person that is completely lost in life.

The MC isn't just lazy and kind, which might illicit the harem he has, but it is more like he suffers from serious debilitating depression and his environment actively enables it and supports it to the point he doesn't need to eat, wash or use the toilet and he lives forever so it never ends and the longer it goes the less likely it is some external force can bring his miserable existence to an end. Including himself since he isn't awake long enough to attempt any self improvement. This is actually not a bad depiction of hell.

Another recurring theme of this work taken to absolute extreme is that characters take extreme action instead of talking to each other, again and again. Characters never try to explain themselves to those that they care about, which is indeed very depressing.

Major spoilers from here.

Evidence for the MC's inhumanity is he practically killed everyone around him at the end of the first volume. He shed a tear, but didn't even try to fix the situation and resented Kanon for doing it. Even if not malicious he is clearly dangerous and without care for anything. Considering his power keeps growing, he might really destroy the world by mistake.

The second volume and the arc that focuses on his relationship with the hero really doesn't make sense. His one regret in life is not fighting seriously with the hero ???! In the first place, he is a sloth demon that gets weaker when he moves, so he actually was fighting properly considering his skills, and indeed it was very effective. Also, why would he wait a million years just for that ? What are the chances the Hero didn't die of old age ? It is ridiculous. Surely, your companions for thousands of years should illicit greater emotional response. It is too messed up. Why is she the only one he considers a friend ? Beyond insane.

The hero herself is messed up to an unreasonable degree. Also, who ever heard of a person that bravely goes into the world and saves millions, but can't find a single friend ? Not to mention she is a mesmerizing beauty. If this is supposed to be about real psychological and social issues, that ain't one. It is about as ridiculous as the former premise.

Also, Liege's reason to be wish to live is unclear. Does he even enjoy sleeping ? Why does he want to meet another hero when he doesn't like fighting ? Where did this sense of duty come from ? Does he want someone to freeze him ?

This is fantastic novel with deep story, deep characterization and a cheat main character that will do his utmost to continue sleeping.

Furthermore, with no forced love story and even no detestable harem story, the writer is surely creating a novel world incomparable to all other shitty writers out there.

In hindsight, this story makes most of the other light novels and manga I read look like garbage. It was absolutely fantastic. Usually it's the other way where after the initial hype of the story is over I start noticing plot-holes or how foolish the setting/premise was.

It is a relatively short tale about the battle between heaven and hell, angels and demons, all from the point of view of the supporting characters. Every character in this story has some kind of quirk or fundamental flaw and their personalities are clear... more>> driving forces for their actions.

This story has a thoughtful and somber way of telling its tale. There are many fight scenes, but none of them drag on too long or are ridiculous (no shounen power of friendship BS here). The plot twists are wonderful (no attack on titan BS here), and the ending is chilling (oh yeah, very good ending for once, never saw that coming, no cliches to be found here, I loved it).

Perhaps the best thing is the overpowered main character. He is a genuinely depressed man who has lost all the light and purpose in his existence. He wallows in the meaninglessness of his life and the entire story orbits around his broken self. Despite being reincarnated mediocrity he can be described no other way that the most badass of them all "Lazy King". <<less

This is just too good

  • Great writing style and translation!
  • Very interesting characters with depth
  • Extremly likable MC - How I envy him!
  • One of the best endings I ever read
How I wish there was more... but author knows when to end, the ending was perfect, it fits the story and closed it nicely :)

This was a great read. The shift in PoV between chapters was sometimes confusing and took a bit to figure out just whose PoV you were reading, but it wasn't too bad for that. As you switch PoVs you get to learn more about how each character views the MC and the scale of influence he's had despite doing next to nothing most of the time, or doing something on a whim.

One great thing about all of the character is how inhumane they are because they're literally demons. Of course they're inhumane. This made most characters unrelatable and straight unlikable at times, but why on earth should you try to relate yoursel to a literal demon? Why would you expect a human's morality, affection, and kindness, from a demon?

This is a great return to the original 'concept' of a demon: full of sins and a literal incarnation of evil. This isn't a story where you should relate to any character.

The unclocusive... more>> and loose ending, very much, fit the MC of this book: sloth.

So really, even if it's praised as amazing or a masterpiece, you should not expect what you'll usually get in works that's also praised as a masterpiece. <<less

This is a modern masterpiece.

The story seems simple but revels more over time, character dynamics change, you feel tension when characters are surrounded. Not all chapters were engaging, but I just finished the heart wrenching ending! My GOD!!!

I would recommend this novel to anyone remotely interested in fantasy. Best 2 day novel I have read, hands-down

Dont be fool with its mere 16 chapters. Its a true novel. The 3rd best japan novel I read in my life, after Overlord and Dungeon Defense (recently on Top 10). The story of overpowered protagonist is always my cup of tea, but the way these 3 novel tell the story and translated is definetely Top Notch. For Lazy King, it gaves me insights of how 7 deadly sins really embodied demons. I can even learn how human in our society actually embodied these 7 sins. If you know read/watch... more>> 7 deadly sins anime, you will see what a joke that manga/anime compare to this novel. Simply a slow ride of Greatness

From the detailed individual stories that converge into other story lines
To the Interesting and Complex characters that fill it they simply felt realistic to me because of how deep the series goes into them and how all their actions reflect how their sins are attached to them
This series displayed the most interesting way to Use the concept of the 7 deadly sins into the world and story
and I wish there were more series that handled it the same way

This turned into one... more>> of my most favorite novels and I wish more chps would come out
This is a story I really Recommend everyone to at the very least try until Chp 3
It's not something that you get a real feel of after one chapter
After reading thru One I went and read the entire 1st volume than immediately the 2nd
I would say more but anymore would be spoilers and I could honestly write paragraph's more about why I loved this series <<less

Best story I have read in a lot of time.

Interesting all the way and with characters that feel more alive than many others. The protagonist isnt the main focus but ties the world and all the other characters to create a great universe.

Highly reccomended and hoping for a continuation.
