As the Minor Gay Rival in Het Novels

Description

There are always four kinds of people in the traditional Mary Sue world. The Male Lead, the Mary Sue female lead, the woman who never wanted to see the female protagonist live a good life, and the infatuated man willing to destroy heaven and earth to get the female lead.

However, with the rapid expansion of the army of rotten women, there is also a growing type of character, and that is a man who is also infatuated with the male lead… This character is referred to as the gay guy. They share the same infatuation as the second man, also has a tragic end and works together in hindering the male and female protagonist’s love.

Fan Yuan has walked in every time and space playing as the gay man. He had always enjoyed it, until one day, with superb acting, he made the male lead bent… o (╯-╰) o

Fan Yuan (affectionate confession): “I do not want to be your brother, in fact, I have always loved you.”

Someone (fondly looking back): “Me too.”

Fan Yuan (⊙_⊙): “…”

You’ve got the wrong line, bro!

I dropped the novel even when the apocalypse arc was about to start which is usually one of my favorite tropes. Thing is... The MC annoys the f out of me. And the ML is no sunshine either.

Both seem selfish af, just in different ways. The ML is the usual domineering boss gong who basically forces the MC into a relationship. And the MC supposedly wants to follow the plot and not OOC, only to screw up either way, pushing all the blame on the ML and others while he... more>> is at it. Even when they are already together, his attitude towards the ML bothers me. He constantly tries to get rid of the ML and treats the other like a burden/bother.

That's not how you should treat your significant other, in my books. This is also why I don't see any real romance or chemistry between the main CP. All they do is f*** with no sweetness.

The plots also seem kinda flat. Maybe I should mention here that I have attempted to read this novel a couple of times already, but never seemed to finish it. And the only reason I know is because I remember having read the first arc twice before. But the arcs after that are left forgotten. Even now, after rereading the novel, the arcs did not stick to my memory so take that as you will.

I have officially given up on reading this novel. It was a mystery before as to why I never finished this novel. Now I know. I can't read a novel with an annoying MC for long. <<less

Some part are enjoyable, some are boring.

The plot is good.

Spoiler

The MC sealed his memory so he didn't know how to act perfectly even though he was a movie emperor before. Then met the ML, travel various worlds, in the end he gain back his memories and accept himself for who he really is.

[collapse]

Although the ML is so OP, its fine for me. Its just annoying on the first arc because he literally force himself to MC but it was part of him being shameless and pe*vert so in the end its okay.

All the settings of the arcs are good but the some stories are not fun to read.

Spoiler

Like the arc of interstellar. I felt short and not worth reading. Also the part where ML split his soul to three. The idea is good but it didn't end well for me. He looked like a jerk playing the MC's heart but he said sorry in another arc.

[collapse]

Lastly is the ending. It ends too fast. I don't know if there will be some extras that they enter another arc after MC regain his memories. That was just disappointing. <<less

first of all, it's a good story. no doubt. there's angst in the early parts, some rather 'uhh' kind of things in the middle while drama in the later parts.

ALSO

y'all am I the only one who cried during the flashback of the first world????? dude that was hella angsty when the ML found out abt his death that sh*t made me cry...

and I kinda get why ppl was pretty dissatisfied with the ML at the first few arcs bc well.. same but it was explained in the later parts and... more>> if u think abt it even a little bit, it was kinda understandable why he was such a paranoid and sort of obsessive person. it all started on their first world soo.... dont lose hope on the ml, hes a pretty great guy if u turn blind eye to his bullsh*t in the earlier arcs. <<less

The concept of the story was actually my cup of tea but what made me drop this novel is the personality of the MC.

I actually don't care if he's weak but the thing is, he is not smart enough as someone who, quote "travel into a lot of worlds". Seriously, I know he's trying to follow the plot but I think he wouldn't be OOC if he tried hard. Sometimes he's too childish, driven by his emotion and did OOC that made other people misunderstand him.

A bit of a spoiler... more>> (maybe) :

Spoiler

In the 2nd arc, I hate the fact that the ML easily manipulates him into being together. I mean, if we stand by logic, if you're straight wouldn't you do everything in order to get out of another guy's manipulation? Alright, I understand that he owes him his life but spending his whole lifetime in that world with the ML and do adult things, as a straight guy (i emphasized this since the author always emphasizes his preference) I don't think you'd allow that.

[collapse]

imo, the arc's stories weren't all that great, I actually don't have any impression about any of the stories. Probably the only thing that keeps me interested is the ML's background story but during the 3rd arc, the MC just didn't satisfy me anymore.

Spoiler

Once again, he was manipulated by the ML by using that "pitiful" childhood experiences. The ML usually drink and everytime he was invited to drink he would refuse but during a banquet, he was convinced by the ML to drink wine. He's a light drinker, so when he drank 1 jar of wine his consciousness wasn't very clear. In order to follow the plot, when the FL confronted him, without even knowing what the FL said, he did a great mistake that made everyone present thinks he's with the ML. It was just then later he knows he'd gotten OOC when his system gave him a pill to make his mind clear. It was so s*upid since he could've used the pill after he saw the FL and start talking to him right?? Idk, I think in the next arcs, he would do the same thing all over again.

[collapse]

Another thing, his system is as d*mb as he is. Idk but I think one factor that made the plot a mess is also because of his system.

The stars are for the translation team. I've always loved their translations. <<less

First of all, thank you to all of the translators who worked on this novel. Your hard work will not go unnoticed.

As much as this story makes fun of Mary Sues, I can't help but feel that the main character is practically a Mary Sue himself. Although he does not have a horde of men/women coming for him like a Mary Sue does, he kind of got every other stereotypes of one. The story was funny and entertaining at first and I liked that there was a small amount of... more>> mysterious-ness to many of the characters. A cat and mouse chase style romance has always been one of my favorite trope, but I feel that this novel used it to an extremely ridiculous amount. Even when the main couple were practically mutual about their feelings for each other, the shou was still being annoying about being "straight af" and how he must do what he was meant to do. He's really playing the "I'm not gay but $20 is $20" meme hard, or the "It ain't gay as long as you said 'no homo' afterward." It's frustrating.

At some point I feel the story was just trying to fit every scenario into the novel and kind of lost its purpose along the way and also lose the comedy it was trying so hard to hold on to. At the beginning I really didn't think I would also gave up halfway like some of the readers did, but the repetitive-ness made the story really boring after the fifth transmigration... Granted, the novel was about to reveal more light on some of its mysteries, but I couldn't get into the novel anymore.

I'm sorry to say I have also dropped this novel. I liked it enough to keep it in my list of favorites, I guess, but at this moment I do not have the heart to read the novel nor would I recommend it. Maybe one day when I am reminiscing on this novel I might come back to finish it. <<less

nice read 👍🏻

while reading, I was considering a rating of 3.5, but after finishing it, probs a 4.5... i'll leave it at 4

so, the first chapters... I found them confusing and very ??? because I felt a lot of parts were cut short or they ended abruptly or even withough a sign of ending and when you click next, it's already another arc

... more>> i think that's what I didn't really like

buuuut

it does get better towards the end and so, my mental rating went up and the extras were so good~ almost gave it a 5 ⭐️ but remembered the first chapters/arcs and stopped myself

it's still pretty good tho

confusing at the beginning but it gets explained at the end <<less

This story is really different from a lot of other quick transmigration stories in that ML regains his memories pretty quickly. So we have MC and ML who fully knows who they are and are the same people throughout.

Despite how MC is first presented, it's better to go in knowing both MC and ML are actually super black-bellied. Especially ML. ML constantly digs pits for himself though hahaha.

The story only really starts getting good for me around arc 5 or so. When

MC finally accepted ML as his lover. Before this MC's insistence on being a straight man really got on my nerves too.

The first 2 arcs were okay but the arcs in between was a drag. Necessary for back story but a drag.

One major flaw of this novel is the abrupt endings. Every arc's ending feels way too abrupt, even the final ending feels way too abrupt. <<less

Although this novel isn't exceptional, but it is still a good read. This is good to pass your time. I actually love QT, and the drama and comedy are balanced. Everything is well explained, and the translation is superb! Don't know why others doesn't like this, but I can only give myself an explanation that it isn't their cup of tea. No one forcing you to read, anyway, since novels are for entertainment. I just want to recommend this.

Pros :

The MC is such a fun one. He knows how to uplift the mood. The system gives off 'you're an annoying host but I'm stuck with you' kind of vibe.

The ML is interesting... He have his own system and have some memories of previous world. The identity of ML in each world is something worth the wait for.

The arcs are nice I guess. Non blood related brothers la, star and manager la aristocrat x prince la. MC also plays different kinds of character, once he's bunny like and another... more>> time, he's like a block of ice.

Cons :

Half of the novel is ML pursuing MC and I feel that MC isn't that mature and cares for ML. ML is a yandere (not so much imo) but some people might not like that. For example : during a battle scene, ML intentionally wait for MC to have danger so MC can rely more on ML..... <<less

I enjoyed this QT novel a lot, but I’ll concede that it gets... underwhelming as the arcs progress. Absolutely great start, but not all arcs make the story, to be honest.

The MC is hardworking and tries his best to make the story flow the way it’s supposed to, but the ML doesn’t allow that to happen. Explanation here:

Spoiler

The first mission of MCs is the world before the first arc and is where the MC and ML met. The MC just perfectly carried out his mission, but the ML fell for him the that world. This led to the ML following the MC into his next worlds.

[collapse]

If I had the summarize the arcs in general... they’re quite forgettable. Most are quite bland and hard to get through.

I don’t know, I’d say this novel is worth a read, but it wouldn’t hurt to not read it. You’re not missing out on anything if you choose to skip this story. <<less

I tried reading this a lot of times, I've read a lot of QT stories and this one doesnt really have a hook in each world.
I always give up reading halfway then forgetting about it and tries to go back to reading it again giving it a chance because of certain reviews.
The thing that bores be out the most is that each world doesn't really have a good hook, sometimes it felt like dragging and bores you out.
Reading each chapter becomes a chore for me, enjoyable on some parts but dragging on most of it.

Finally, a QT (quick transmigration) novel that isn't fixated on getting revenge.

The QT concept: The MC, Fan Yuan, is an 'actor' who plays the role of a minor gay love rival in straight novels. The objective is to follow the script (just like how an actor follows the script for a movie). This is very different from other QT novels in which the transmigrator has to change the fate of the original host.

  • It was explained later in the novel that there is a original source world that manages the worlds that the 'actors' gets sent to. There is a hierarchy of actors (high, medium, low) that operates in different planes (upper, medium, lower). This hierarchy dictates what type of roles the actors gets to play in. The MC, Fan Yuan, is a low level actor (from the lower plane) who acted random roles for 3000 yrs before he leveled up to be a supporting role as the minor gay love rival. The concept of levels and planes is confusing. The snippet in the spoiler box below explains it better.
    Spoiler

    Excerpt from Ch4.9 (Arc 4, Chapter 9)

Worlds where acting tasks could be executed were divided into three thousand large worlds, three thousand medium worlds and three thousand small worlds, also known as the upper plane, the middle plane and the lower plane. Whatever the level of the world, all of them were managed by the original source world.

Fan Yuan, for example, was a minor gay love rival actor, so he belonged to the supporting male group. However, due to the fact that among the supporting males there were also distinctions between levels and the nature of the acting roles, the supporting male group was divided into many departments that were carefully managed.

And watching over all these departments was a very mysterious organization called the Law Enforcement Group, which consisted of ten senior law enforcement advisors. The number of senior law enforcement advisors was fixed at ten, but the number of people waiting to fill the spots numbered to way more. The birth of a new law enforcement advisor had to be accompanied with the fall of an old one.

One of the ten law enforcement advisors, who was rumoured to have never been replaced, was Lord Li Yanlong, the chief advisor.

    [collapse]
  • Spoilers about major characters:

    Spoiler

In arc 4, we learn that the MC died in the real world and transmigrated to the other world which assigns actors to play roles in novels. It is revealed that the MC was also an actor when he was still alive in the real world. He was regarded as the movie emperor and went by the stage name, Dan Wen. When another actor inquired him about 'Dan Wen, ' the MC did not recognize the name (suggesting that MC forgot about his life in the real world)

Li Yanlong - revealed in arc 2 to be the Chief Law Enforcement Advisor. Li Yanlong seems to know everything that is going. He was the one who revealed the true identity of the MC. He bowed to Yan Rui, which suggests that Yan Rui is of even higher rank.

The ML's name is Yan Rui. He first appeared in the 1st arc which is the 2nd novel that the MC 'acted' in. We finally learn his name in arc 3. Yan Rui's is still a mysterious character. It was largely implied in arc 2 that he is someone of considerable ranking. In arc 3, the MC speculated that Yan Rui is unlikely to be an actor since he escaped the system's detection.

Yu Kai, the BOSS of arc 1, was played by an 'actor' as well. He reappears in arc 4 as Hong Wu, the BOSS of arc 4. The name of this actor is unknown, but it is revealed that he was a die hard fan of Dan Wen when he was alive and is several years younger than him. He has romantic interests in the MC

    [collapse]
The highlight:

  • I love the MC's internal monologue and his interactions with the system is hilarious. The MC is no genius, but his viewpoints are very down to earth (and comical) in how he points out the flaws in straight novels.
  • There's a bigger world (with the 'actors' and the Law Enforcement Group) that's outside of these individual arcs and it's exciting when hints are dropped in each arc.
  • The smut is very explicit. It starts in arc 4
The downside: The individual arcs themselves are pretty dull. Considering that each arc is 13 chapters at most, I feel like too much of it is wasted on development (explaining the set up of the arc, the events, the MC's internal monologue, and the MC/ML's relationship development). However, since the ML doesn't care to follow the script, the plotline of the arc runs without any direction and concludes in a rush.

I read up to ch.4 of the 6th arc before I dropped this. Truthfully, I already started getting bored midway through arc 3 which is the worst arc out of the 6 I've read.

I'm loving every part of this one! The MC is likeable and not OP, and it's funny see him struggling to accomplish his role in the novels. The ML is kinda S, but I still like it. It's nothing unbearable.

The systems are cute, and that is point too (⌒_⌒)

Ah! On the side, I really really like how the author can add his fair amount of good angst. It kinda got me by surprise and I cried a bit cuz I liked both the... Ahem! I better not spill the... more>> beans, though this is part of the first chapters. I don't wanna spoil the ride to anyone

_ (:3 」∠) _

BUT BE AWARE that this is a slow romance, hence the MC is not madly in love with the ML yet. In fact, the MC is still embracing his straightness regardless of being promoted to be a gay minor side character.

And that's good! It's a good change from others novels ♥ <<less

The translations were really good, as they always are from Chrysanthemum Garden. However, the plot was just not it.

I've read a good amount of fast transmigration type novels and have enjoyed them so I had high expectations for this novel as well. Sadly, it didn't live up to those expectations. The endings for some of the arcs felt very rushed and forced. It's as if you are in the middle of a story and suddenly you go on to the next chapter and it just ends. It's not satisfying. Other... more>> arcs just felt very boring as their wasn't much to the plot. Basically felt like everyday slice of life type. Overall none of the stories from any of the arcs was especially memorable except the arc where the ML splits himself and gives a part of himself to 3 different ppl in one of the arcs I guess. However, that arc was just very disturbing.

I don't even know how I was able to read until the end. Not the worst but definitely not the best novel either. <<less

Overall a cute story. I like the main pairing well enough, and they're pretty adorable together. The reason I stopped was because the arcs get repetitive and boring after a while, and I've lost interest. I'll probably pick it up again in the future to finish it.

I like this novel because MCs are not emotional manipulators, they really fall in love, their feelings are real. But what bothers me a bit is MC who still follows the plot of the system to hurt FL even though it's against his conscience. And again, its yaoi why tho MC become so homophobic.
