I Am A Matchmaker on Taobao

After waking up from a car accident, not only was I alive, I had also gained a new ability. If I stare at someone or a photo for three seconds, I’m able to see whom and when they shall marry…

The 18th tier small-time actor Shen Chuchu knew that with this skill, her mother would never have to worry that she will starve to death again.

She would put down her roots on Weibo first, then open a matchmaking store on Taobao.*

“Your husband is a close friend and you will be married in March next year. You will have a happy marriage.”

“Your husband will appear at your company’s dessert store soon, so remember to keep a close watch every day.”

……

*Note: Weibo is a popular social media app in China with functions similar to Twitter. Taobao is basically the Chinese eBay/Amazon.

A certain amateur celebrity is already married?

A certain director’s wife is going to have an accident soon?

One day, someone came to her for matchmaking.

“Sorry, lady. Fortune-telling requires fate, and it seems like we don’t have that between us.”

“Isn’t this just about money? As long as you can figure out my son’s marriage, I can pay you tenfold. No matter how much!”

F***ing hell, it wasn’t that she wouldn’t predict the match. The arrogant CEO’s future spouse was actually her.

As many other reviews have stated: this is an extremely lighthearted and fluffy book. The female lead (Shen Chu Chu) is, by virtue of her matchmaking system, a nosy person. Except I find her meddlesome problem solving skills super cute and heart-warming. In all cases everything works out in the end... except maybe Chen Yi (if you know what I mean lol). Cause seriously, there's not much Chu Chu could do for her.

The pacing of the novel is well-proportioned except the ending seemed a bit rushed. The romance blooms around... more>> the half-way (or so) point and our leads have a wonderful chemistry together.

My favourite arc was probably solving Han Xingyan's Cousin's problems... that was a sketchy marriage arrangement. That's all I'm gonna say! Also I forget his name it's like Zheng something. But as the cousin of the male lead he sure was an interesting character.

On that note, I'd like to say that all the characters, both the good and the bad, were fun to read about. To any who say that the female lead isn't 'smart enough.' I have one response: she feels like an actual relatable human who is not perfect and makes mistakes. That's what makes this a great book to read. I recommend this to anyone who is sick of dog-blood angsty romances and just wants to breath some fresh air. <<less

So I have MTL'ed the story and have gotten the gist of it. My final evaluation of it is it's a nice story, good for a casual read. A solid 3.

Spoiler

Though the story does rely on drama to fuel it's plot (?) it's not too dramatic or overly complicated.

The relationship between the two leads is actually quite harmonious and sweet. There's no family drama like a disapproving mother-in-law either.

[collapse]

If I had to think of cons, then there are a few under the next spoiler. But as this feels like a light story meant for casual reading, it probably doesn't matter much.

Spoiler

For the cons, there are a few.

- Lack of Plot, Too Easy

The plot really doesn't go anywhere. The story mainly focuses on Shen Chuchu's rise to fame as an actress and her budding relationship with the ML. During that she does stumble on some issues, but they are fairly easily resolved. There's no thrill or severity to the conflict, no high-point of rising action or situations to stress the reader. It's very easy-going, for worse or best.

- Marriage System

For how important it seemed in the premise, it's actually not all too special. Shen Chuchu's basically uses the system as a cheat to peek into the private lives of celebrities and others. If she finds any incongruity (like a slag man who is married but still chases after girls) she usually resolves them. Other of that, she uses it as a side gig to make money as a fortune teller. Outside of marriage, it's pretty useless.

There's no harsh penalties that come with the system, no huge secret behind it or why she got it, and she resolves conflicts pretty easily. It's just a boon granted to her because why not.

- Uninteresting Villains

This one kinda speaks for itself. The people who go against her aren't necessarily smart and they usually have some big marriage-related secret. The way she usually resolves things is to work in the background and ruin the villain's reputation via fans slamming them on weibo etc. Sure it'd mean the end of a celebrity's career if they lost their reputation and fan base, but this only really applies to the entertainment circle and such. Hmm, how convenient for her...

- The Acting & No Rival

What should be a highlight of such an entertainment business novel. But it's not gone into much in depth, which is pretty disappointing. They mention the movie she's going into, speed through any auditions, a few scenes here and there on set, but not too in depth as the author would rather focus on marriage issues. Maybe the main problem for me is that Shen Chuchu had no serious rivals. Though she worked hard to raise her acting skills and plus some help from the system, but there was no friendly competition that could match her and make me really care about her career.

Firstly, I am gonna state the obvious. I am only in c48, but I am Mango approving this. Might seem a bit hasty. But this series has managed to actually show itself to be such a brilliant light read which has something for everyone.

To start with, I HATE Showbiz novels. In fact, I had decided to never read another one, but this just drew me in with its unique system. Happy to say, this series is a completely fresh take on the showbiz aspect. For starters, this series is not... more>> really a drama series. Instead, it is a very light read focusing on a brilliant romance set in the backdrop of the showbiz industry.

The female lead has the ability to see the future of everyone around her in terms of their marriages and such, and she uses this ability to connect couples and destroy those couples which are better off not existing. However, this would be an understatement. Through this system, we see the various kinds of relationships that exist in the showbiz industry, and how nothing is perfect. NO! That is not the right way to put it. Rather, we learn how everything doesn't have to be perfect to become a good relationship. I really enjoy this version of the showbiz industry where there is less focus on faceslapping and all that drama. There still exist the meaningless chatbots, but they are at least not covering entire chapters. Still, that is a flaw.

This series is at its weakest when the drama gets onto overdrive mode. This is more or less a slice of life themed series, with the protagonist simply living her daily life. She is not the driver of the series. This is very similar to SoL story elements. Rather than that, the Male Lead is a much more potent plot driver. He might seem like the typical cold-face CEO with a broken childhood (he probably is), but what is fresh is his honest attempt at wooing our MC. Is he a stalker and all that things? Debatable, as there are some genuinely chance encounters. But at least, there is no r*pe. The aphrodisiac is there, but it is not used to create the romance. Rather, it is just what reinforces her urge to stay rational with him.

But why am I rating this 4 instead of 5? For starters, this is only 119 chapters long. But still, I am only on c48. There is a good chance it might end up as a 3 at the end. But I still love the romance, the depiction of the showbiz industry and the relationships within it. A rather light read which fails when it attempts to punch above its waist.

This series is Mango approved. <<less

Pretty good, very lighthearted. But there are some things that I don't quite like.

Spoiler

1. I wish their relationship started later. FL out of nowhere suddenly likes ML when it was shown multiple times how she doesn't consider him as a prospect partner. They had some interactions but can't be considered intimate enough that would make you think they're cultivating their feelings. Even their engagement seemed rushed.

2. ML is too controlling. It doesn't sit right with me that he interferes with her work. Also, when she says she's tired, please just leave her alone.

[collapse]

TBH I only finished this because of the matchmaking side stories. <<less

If you are looking for a light read, this one is for you. It's not a bad story, but it isn't something that is that great.

Recommended because MC and ML have a well-established relationship born of love and mutual respect.

It a slice of life story As a slice of life story, it delivers what it is meant to give and it is enough to give it a read!

... more>> Plot: 3

This isn't a dog blooded novel where there is a bunch of characters who disapproves of the relationhip. There is a gradual shift of MC and ML relationship that is kind of believable. I really appreciate that since it reflected the light hearted premise of the novel!

The premise of the matchmaking system is also interesting especially as the novel progresses. Too OP but it's fine.
Spoiler

I also like that MC improvement in acting isn't fully due to the system and MC also worked hard for it.

[collapse]

Character: 3.5

I like the characters well-enough. ML isn't the overbearing kind of ML and actually has a separate life from MC (except from when someone bullies MC). Very harmonius relationship. There isn't much depth to his character though.

The additional.5 here comes from our MC! She is very kind buy still has a backbone.
Spoiler

There is an effort to build a backstory and as a studenTNmyself I appreciate that this story accepts that MC had a burn out of her college course (finance). She also knows what she wants but wouldn't be unscrupulous to achieve it. My favorite part of the novel should be when she questions if she can stop a death that was hinted in the system (friendly wife that MC is close with dies, husband (director) profile showed he is widowed.) She was frantic the whole time they were shooting a series

[collapse]

Cons:

There isn't much substance in the story. The antagonists/villains are just there to show that MC can prevail/surpass them. It doesn't reveal why she git the system in the first place (i mean this usually happens but it is one of my qualms reading system novels) <<less

The plot is not heavy and the ML is totally a wive s*ave (in a good way).

- Pay for eating out even though she said she will be the one treating him.

- when she still want to pay, say that she can treat the next eating out twice so she will still be treating him, when in actually he will still be the one treating so he still have a reason to meet with her.

- when giving a customized branded gift take out the logo and say you pick it up casually therefore doesn't cost much so she accept your gift

- always follow wive. For example:

If you’re into sweet and lighthearted stories then this is exactly what you’re looking for.

Although the story has its flaws, but when you got that devoted and supportive male lead that’s only loyal to our female lead— you know it’s a swoon worthy one. The couple will certainly make you smile ‪♡

And although the title is “Matchmaker on Taobao”. She mostly did the matchmaking in real life and also helped a lot of people not only with matchmaking. She protects but he also protects so it’s a tie haha I... more>> actually want to have that Marriage system it’s so convenient! <<less

FL gets a system after an accident which she uses to earn money at first then later uses it to help her friends and co-workers and also to get even with some villains.

ML is okay, really nice, helps her when she was in trouble then slowly gets attracted to her, though he did not tell the MC that he was courting her, lol she was shocked when he told her though lol ?

But kinda gets boring in the middle, although MC is not OP but her life is pretty easy... more>> because no drama is really happening, all villains are easy to handle and usually ML helps her so yeah carefree life for MC.

Feels like some plotholes are left unfinished or maybe because I used MTL thats why I miss something..

Spoiler

because I really thought there would be a rival for ML, his surname is Dong but I am not sure about the name.. They met on a plane where he helped MC, later on MC help him to save his mother from an accident because MC saw through her system (new feature from system after an upgrade) how his mother will die thru an accident via falling from stairs.. He later gave her money as compensation, at first she don't want to accept the money, but he insisted then they were seen by some paparazzi or something, there was some foreshadowing that he will alter regret what he said during their conversation that time (because he said some mean things to MC) after another arc with him helping MC with a slag actor he was never mentioned again.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Also about her college classmate that I think had a crush on her, but was also forgotten, because when they met again in their class reunion, I thought he would have a bigger role lol he didn't even had the chance to tell MC his feelings, poof he was gone never to be mentioned again. Lol ?

[collapse]

And the system also it was never mention if she ever perfected all the system tasks. It was only mentioned that it was upgraded twice I think. No consequences for her altering the lives of someone (she saved two lives which changed the destiny of others). So yeah those are my complaints but it was still a good read and I thoroughly enjoyed the fluff. <<less

Not the worst story I've ever read but not very good. Very cliched plot and characters, same tired tropes, and not even particularly well-written. I managed to limp through until the fainted-due-to-pregnancy cliche and couldn't stand it anymore.

Also, the CEO ML is as annoyingly toxically masculine as the best of them, including when he was massaging the (entertainment star, of course) FL because she was injured on set (as they always are) and she asked him to be gentler and he refused because "real men don't slow down or go... more>> gentler." That's messed up, man. <<less

Cute entertainment novel with a slight super-power twist. Both FL and ML are smart, reasonable people. Enjoyed the relaxing read. Only wish there were more bonus/epilogue chapters, and that there were more closure on her matchmaking talent, as it seemed to be ignored towards the end.

This story wasn't the best out there but it's still quite entertaining to read. Unfortunately, near the end, the author seemed to forget the original premise of this story, that was: MC as a matchmaker and focused more on MC as an actress.

Spoiler

And there was no closure in the end about the matchmaking system. Did MC ever finish her mission? And what would happen when she reached the highest level?

This novel was a fresh breeze in the entertainment industry theme. The initially slow progression of her fame (at least when compared within fiction) allowed for her work to feel like actual work instead of just a power trip. There was drama, but it was not over-exaggerated. The way it was written means that most of the dogblooded plot was that of various relationship troubles viewed from the gossiping perspective of a bystander.

Although I know it’s a low bar, one of the best parts of this novel happens when ... more>>

our cold virg*n CEO gets confused by the drugged MC and is very close to skipping to the final step. Clothes are off and everything is ready to go, but he comes to his senses after an interruption and takes her to soak under a cold shower together. They also get sick together the next morning. Consent plus humor? Damn, thumps up.

It’s good for him that he didn’t go all the way too. She remembers literally nothing of that night and never recalls for the rest of the story. There is no way the story would have developed the same way if he had s*x with her after “saving” her from a date r*pe. Her good impression of this stranger would have gone straight to disgust. Hell, it basically did anyway one chapter when she thinks he has a girlfriend. He does not realise he needs to defend against something so false at first but explains to her clearly as soon as he realizes the problem, eliminating her disgust. It would not be so easy to resolve if he had finished committing the big mistake.

My regrets are not many.
Spoiler

The largest is that we don’t get to see the MC lose her big match maker vest.

This story is so good! The plot is fresh and no dog blood dramas which I dislike. MC is not a Mary Sue, she is not OP neither she becomes a good actress fast. She works hard!

The ML is a CEO (what a surprise...) but he has is flaws and doesn't force MC in the relationship. I find him likable, and I like his interactions with his family too, his cousin is funny.

3.5 lol I was waiting patiently for the translations for a year until yesterday. Then I was like f*ck it I'll mtl. Haha.

I still think there is some worth waiting if you're not too attached and you don't have the time to mtl. It's probably more enjoyable to read the translations anyways.

There's nothing particularly too offensive nor special but I think it's still fun and exciting how she using her marriage powers to help all her costars. They make for interesting stories, more so than the romance ngl.

The ML is... more>> the neither the best nor bad, just above average basic bit*h ceo ML (ngl I almost rolled my eyes to my grave and dropped dead when he did that basic bit*h ceo line of I don't want to see you do an intimate scenes but he does end up supportive of her career and even push an unlikely script towards her/ oh but his family is pretty basic bit*h give me a baby but it helps both families are nice and no drama).

The MC is refreshing as a clear voice and quite a cautious character. She's not perfect nor unbelievably likeable but she's also not boring so I think my rating is on point.

To end, I think this is still enjoyable for what it is. <<less

The system is present in the first twenty or so chapters, but this is not really a system novel- the system isn't really mentioned from chapter 20-48 other than the MC using it to view other people's info. There are frequent time skips of days at a time, and one point a three month time skip. The romance between the MC and the CEO feels forced.

Sigh.

I really liked this premise but ultimately the execution falls flat; I'm pretty sure it was intentionally done but the pacing feels slow and I... more>> find myself not caring much about any of the characters. I really love the type of 'fortune telling powers' novels but here it feels like it's really underplayed- she has a quota of 11 people every day but after the first day we literally don't hear about any of them. The system is more like a crutch to allow the MC to have an ability/gimmick/avenue to one-up other people, than being the focus of the novel, which is why I don't really consider this a system novel even though a system is 'supposed' to play an important role.

Maybe this gets better over time but I wouldn't know because it's only translated up to chapter 48. Frankly I'm disappointed at the translator 'plumlizi' - the translator for some reason is translating 5+ novels at once resulting in each chapter being a month apart. Like why? Just translate one, get it done then do the others. It's like painting all of your rooms in your house at the same time but rather than focusing on one room, you do a bit in each room. Imagine how long it'd take before you can even move into any rooms to live inside the house!

Going to try to find some more 'fortune telling in modern era' novels and steer as clear from 'plumlizi' as I can by not reading any novels they're involved in translating. <<less

I'll give it a 3. But I don't think people who gave a higher score are weird, nor people who gave a lower score are being unjust. It depends on what aspect you are evaluating this story.

If you want to evaluate from the sweet romance, interactions between FL/ML and some of the supporting family cast... its quite sweet and fast paced. And I found it entertaining enough to finish this story in a sit.

Spoiler

I liked that they emphasized her hard work instead of having the gold-finger that was supposed to be the system give her 'acting skills'. Yes, there were strokes of luck, but everytime she has to work herself to get them or keep them.

I also liked that ML didn't just sleep with her when she was drugged and went with the "I'm trying to help you with your intoxication" kind of explanation. He last-minute ruled in his desires and properly pursued her.

His jealousy is also within bounds. And that's a plus when we have Boss/President MLs.

[collapse]

But I want to talk about somethings I found lacking, and it is directly related to the title of this story:

Spoiler

I support the people who voiced their disappointment with the matchmaking system. But it wasn't because the idea was bad, but it was because the system's development was lacking, and the author often forgot to mention the repercussions the FL was supposed to face everytime she went against the system's prerrogative.

Instead of saying a system is bad, or good... it would be better to have a reason for it to exist in the first place. For example, if I substituted the system for an informant like Red Feather (being her close friend or owing her one), it wouldn't change the story.

What is the reason for Yue Lao to use MC to help increase marriage rates and decrease divorce rates if either the couple who's going to marry was going to marry even without MC interfering or if destroying a bad marriage makes her lose points?

This system would work if went one of the ways:

  1. Issued quests or side quests for MC to complete (some obligatory)
  2. Didn't help as much, but alerted her everytime a couple that is supposed to be together for some reason went separate ways and she has to find a way to pull them back together.

Like this, the system would be much more relevant, just like when she saved director Chang's Wife. It changed their future, and I think its a good way to apply the system.

[collapse]

And I don't know if this happened because of this previously mentioned flaw in the plot, but...

Spoiler

Except when she took her vengeance on some people, MC seems to always be very unsure or confused about how she should deal with the info she gets from the system. Again, that's why this system isn't so useful. She needs more punishments, rewards or a direction in order to be more sure of what to do.

[collapse]

Overall, I recommend this story for people who want to read something lighthearted. There are no major ups and downs, the most distressing is MC's indecision at some points and that's it. Its a solid 3. <<less

I reading the raw using google translate because it is a really nice novel.

The story is flowing nice and also interesting to follow.

I really love how the MC is stay clear of her principle and how she help many people in the journey of her story.

... more>> The only aspect that lack is the use of system itself.

It feels like the system is quite important but also become a figurant.

Especially when reaching the end of story.

You may feel as if the author change the concept of the novel.

Because neither the system or the secret weibo or Yue Lao's mission ever explained the continuation.

Basically it is a full romance story with and adds-on of system that can be said important but also unimportant.

Well recommended if you like to read an easy to understands and nice romance novel. <<less
