His Mother was tormented to death from prolonged drugs poisoning , his father thought to send him away to a small village (Zhuangzi) in Jing Jiao so he could serve his filial duty to his mother (mourning), everyday he was bullied by servants. Xu Chang An, in this life, he could only watch the little man (villain) who had harmed his mother and was being depressed living in the small village. However, he did not expect to suddenly be given a wedding decree from the emperor to make him become the wife (Wangfei) of the first prince, Xiao Qing Yan.

He knew in his heart that this matter was his salvation but to Xiao Qingyan, who has a great prospect, this was a disaster. After the great wedding, he took advantage of his new status to avenge his mother and himself. Xu Chang An was aware of the emperor’s intention that time when he was sanctioned a marriage, he all along tried his utmost to support Xiao Qingyan. Until by a lucky coincidence that the imperial government rewarded him, who’d performed great merit. The emperor promised to fulfill his wish, Xu Chang An without hesitation knelt down to request imperial decree to accomplish Xiao Qing Yan’s greatest wish.

“Your servant have no other request, please Your Majesty to bestow decree to allow your servant leave His Highness peacefully. Thank Your Majesty’s benevolence. Long live the emperor, long live for thousand of years.”

I liked the translate chapters so much I MTLed :)

This is a maturer BL novel that avoids the usual sappy stereotypical cliches. The characters aren't "love at first sight" and the characters are fleshed out and interesting. The plot doesn't twist itself to make things go the MC and ML's way and the side characters are very interesting and their motives and actions fit their character and social status.

MC is naive (he's 15 and was sent away and under house arrest during his formative years) but very intelligent. Sometimes... more>> his intelligence wins out and sometimes it doesn't (he's book smart but lacks experience). ML is a prince and therefor smart and used to manipulation and scheming and that's pretty apparent in how he acts and what he does. What I love most though is that the novel doesn't forget that there are other intelligent and scheming characters. For example, we haven't found out what goes through the Emperor's mind and the purpose of his actions (at least up to chapter 35) but you know he's scheming something that no one else can comprehend. Third Prince originally comes off as a cruel hot-tempered prince (in a worse written story he'd try to pursue and r*pe/steal the MC and continue to be one dimensional and cruel) but in the same scene you think he's horrible, you get another side of him that makes you go "oh, I can understand why you're doing this. I don't condone it but I understand" and you aren't LMAO when you learn that he's a main contender for the throne.

The romance is slow but it's also very realistic as to why. So far you can feel fondness between the MC and ML developing and I look forward to the direction it develops.

Spoiler

Not really a spoiler but just rambling with spoilers so you can understand what kind of story this is and how "realistic" it is. The story explains that in this setting, servant/s*ave girls belonging to the wife can "sleep" with the husband and enter his harem. Though there's the stigma of "climbing into the masters bed" it is also presented as advantageous to the wife because it gives them a "partner-in-crime" in the harem and the servant retains loyalty to their original master no matter how high they climb.

This becomes a very real issue when MC needs to find a way to solidify his status and comfort as the wife because he needs ML to like him, doesn't know how long his current "comfortable" situation will last and he can "adopt" the child born from their union. He offers his two servants a chance to enter ML's harem but respects their decision when they say no.

I love how mature the author is about this. There's no weird rant about betrayal or whatever. She doesn't condemn the women or ML. It's a cultural practice and everyone understands the pragmatism of it and it's presented so maturely that it feels natural and you can understand that it's even presented as an option. This respect to the culture and customs is refreshing. In many other stories the author chooses to present Ancient Chinese culture and customs and proceeds to bash them in childish and rude ways.

... I fail to see why everyone is rating this novel 5 stars. At most it deserves 2 stars.

First of the MC oh dear. You could replace him with an innocent 14 year old girl and I wouldn´t notice. He´s like one of those poor women who get kidnapped in a rural village and eventually yields to the husband. Except this is yaoi so it leaves a weird taste in your mouth.

So dense, so naive, so dumb (even do he´s supposed to be intelligent). He does have common sense, but... more>> the problem is that MC is extremely passive. So passive he went through 80 chapters with his eyes halv closed! He couldn´t even manage to get revenge for his mother without the ML´s help. The story went downhill from there when he accepts ML and all his insults. He obviously didn´t want to marry ML, he wanted to be an official but doesn´t do anything to change the situation. Everyone around his is a wolf in sheep skin and they plot and scheme against him while he just stands in the same spot.

Basically he´s a white paper. The author seemed to think MC getting interest in horse riding is enough to show his "manliness", it´s not. To top it of there is mpreg for the ending to flow more conveniently. I gave up when MC revealed his love for ML. The summary above is misleading because while MC tries to separate from ML, he gets immediately stopped by ML. So basically he never got a chance to struggle.

Secondly although I appreciate it, the translation is really bad the first 30 chapters, it was extremely difficult to understand 60 % of it.

don´t waste your time dear reader <<less

This is a very mellow novel that can be easily enjoyed as long as you don't have very high expectations for the MC. It is not an extensive, face-slapping novel with high drama, nor does it go into detail on revenge over abusive/neglectful family as the summary might imply. The moral of the story is that KARMA IS A ***. Don't do things you wouldn't want to have done to yourself.

There's so much potential in the story, but most scenes tend to fall a little flat or end up breezed... more>> through without allowing the reader to connect deeply to what's going on. There isn't a lot of creativity, but a lot of cliches/tropes done just to be part of the genre. It's passable if you like a BL without drama or a lot of tension and if you need something to pass the time. I wouldn't recommend it to someone looking for something deeply engaging or top tier.

I don't hate the novel, hence why I didn't rate it 1 star.. but I can think of a lot more disappointing or confusing things compared to what I did enjoy.

Translation-wise, it's coherent and 100x better than MTL. However, there are still a lot of grammar mistakes here and there. Still, I'm thankful for the translator for making the effort to put this here for us to enjoy.

Xu Chang An is a very passive character, and not superb in any particular field except reading and memorizing books. I would even venture to say that his best trait is being wedded to the male lead... which is a poor situation given he's the main character and not a side character.

Having been spoiled by fast-paced, face-slapping main characters in other revenge novels, I'm pretty neutral, leaning towards disappointed, about how everything played out. Given that I highly doubt that I would fair much better if I were in Xu Chang An's shoes, I tried to give him and the author the benefit of the doubt and ploughed on ahead.

Xu Chang An feels like he's muddling his way through his life. He's adamant on wanting revenge on his family, but while his family and enemies plot against him, their comeuppance barely has anything to do with his actions or words (only indirectly). Most of his enemies end up dropping a stone on their own foot. ¯_ (ツ) _/¯ It's one of those moments where I believe MC could have done something, but the events just pass him by or someone else handles it... I can forgive the novel if Xu Chang An leaves them off if he just wants to live his life well, but he mentions wanting to see his family's downfall and doesn't particularly do much besides read books and learn how to ride horses. You just kind of feel like he's not a particularly notable character despite being the main character.

Spoiler

Xu Chang An goes over to one of the shops he has a deed for to cut off his family's source of money. It turns out the concubine that poisoned his mother is already there, and being the villainous cannonfodder she is, she metaphorically tosses herself at him to be ruined due to her own ignorance.

Can you really say Xu Chang An got his revenge as much as the cannonfodder was just being too s*upid? This is trend in the novel: Xu Chang An is here. Cannonfodder insults him, but also this isn't appropriate. Someone lays it on them for not adhering to the rules.

[collapse]

The novel sometimes brings up how smart Xu Chang An is, but the novel plays on his naivety and ignorance. He is only book smart, and this intelligence only really comes to play later on in the novel. While it leads to him asking for divorce, the lead up and the way it plays out isn't... gratifying. The scene occurs and then it's a mad scramble for a moment and then it's over.

I EXPECTED ANGST AND MY HEART TO HURT AND BE MENDED LATER... but apparently it's not that type of novel.

Spoiler

Emperor: Xu Chang An did good in helping us with this incident. Ask for a reward. /hint hint!

ML: Go on, ask for whatever you want! /oblivious, pleased for MC/

MC: /gets the emperor's hint, doesn't want to hinder ML's career/ I ask for a divorce!

ML: !?!?

ML's sister: No! Sister-in-law is being poisoned by Gu, don't believe him!

And scene carries MC off, continues briefly elsewhere but it's over.

Me: That's it?!

[collapse]

What bewildered me the entire time I read the novel is everyone's reaction over the male lead's wife being male. I expected some dramatic h*mophobia, but the only thing that people kept repeating was that Xu Chang An couldn't give birth so the male lead couldn't be emperor due to an ancestor's law. Which doesn't make sense to me, as the reason is to place importance in the first wife's male heir, but an emperor is expected to have a harem and the fight for the throne entails many princes... so shutting off the opportunity due to gender doesn't feel thought up well.

Another thing everyone's reaction implied is that male/male pairings aren't uncommon in the world, just that they're not usually made into wives/concubines... However, there seemed to be no other examples of male pairings in the novel, not even in passing (other than in a question ML asked MC and the fact that there's a law about male wife), unless I missed it. I mean, author didn't have to, but it's just another hole that wasn't filled in.

Overall, it seemed like the novel stuck itself in a zone where I can't say the novel is bad, but it's not particularly good either.

And... yeah, you can replace MC with a naive, tomboyish, infertile female MC and there would literally not be much difference in how MC or everyone reacts. You only really note that he's male when the novel literally points it out, so it's kind of disappointing since the novel could have gone the route of a young master, who should be riding a horse and playing with swords and politics, blundering his way through women's courtyard intrigue. One of the reasons to read BL feels a little lost when it comes to this.

The ML is a little better, but somewhat... confusing. I'm not sure if something is missing or not, but it feels like his initial dislike and irritable treatment of Xu Chang An suddenly disappeared between scenes. I like that neither of them fell in love immediately, but to me, both of them seemed to skip from neutral or dislike to I-don't-want-this-person-to-be-with-someone-else like. Xu Chang An seemed completely neutral about the whole situation, other than he owed the ML, but suddenly looked at ML while he was out for the count and decided he actually liked ML more than a friend. Same with the ML's feelings.

... similarly, some points of the plot feels this way, too. The mpreg was foreshadowed by the dozens of times they point at MC and say he can't give birth. However, it still came out of left field. Same with some other more important plot points, such as in the last chapter or something, ML inwardly reveals to the reader someone who was plotting against them. Foreshadowed, but revealed like a vaguely dismissive hand wave.

This entire review makes me wonder if there were things missing in translation or the author wrote it this way...

Would I recommend this to anyone? Sure, it's a completely translated danmei novel. Something to start with, but not something to end your danmei reading career with. Use it to pass your time for the next big hit.

Overall, this is very sweet. Our MC is obedient but not weak. Kind-hearted but know how to act accordingly. Our ML is very caring. Although sometimes he shows the opposite because of some reasons. But he will later explain it to our MC though.

The only part I don't understand : which part is 'rich and powerful'...?

The business part seems to be lacking.

The only one part that can be described as powerful (?) is MC knowledge about medicinal herbs gained from his only hobby that is reading misc books.

I like it, it may not be very outstanding or unique but it is very different from most yaoi I read, both MC and ML are neither OP nor stoic, they are very reasonable and humane, both of them have their own struggles and goals, their love progression is also very natural and they really care about each other very much, , WARNING!!! the situation in the summary happened because ChangAn thought he was the obstacle in order for WangYe to succeed the throne (・ั﹏・ั) I almost cried in that scene when the emotions of ChangAn are narrated...... The ending was satisfying too, even though it is not love at first sight, it was definitely their first love which is really sweet (●♡∀♡)

To be honest at the start I was hesitating to read this novel as I thought there'd be lot of concubines. As I don't understand how can you claim to love one person but have relationship with many others. So I am totally satisfied with this novel the MC and ML are well written and developed characters. Interactions between them are also cute. Even side characters are not annoying and I totally love ML stepsister and stepbrother.

This was by far the best Mpreg novel I read. I mean the other Mpreg novels I read couldn't keep me concentrated on them and somehow the plots were not my type. But "The rich and honourable Chang An" was really nice. I think the plots is neither too light nor too heavy and has good pace. The only thing that would have loved to see at the end of novel was how princess Xiao QingYue's married life was.

Now let's talk about our MC and ML. Our MC is such... more>> a adorable and cute protagonist. He just too cute and dumb (yeah he can be dumb and an idiot sometimes but he is really clever and well spoken). I really really love how he treats everyone equally like the bodyguards, maid and servants serving him. Next up is ML, he was quite tsun at first and you will kind of hate him in few chapters but you will know why he did that and naturally will understand him. Plus he is such a flirt, poor MC is his victim.

BTW don't get worried about Xu Chang An telling the emperor to annual their marriage in the summary, their marriage is safe. They later have such a cute family. A prince is born and another child is on the way ^•^

The plot is also good and not too heavily themed. There are no overly vile scheming concubines and does provide some occasional face slaps for enjoyment. The plot is fluffy and there is no love at first sight (thank god). The characters develop feelings for each other and their chemistry is good. Though MC is naive, he is not too much of a pushover and understands that he has his faults. The ML, though initially confusing treats MC very good. Their child is also cute.

One thing you should know, is... more>> that the grammar of the translation is okay quality. The translator does improve in the later chapters. Although this does cause some confusion in some parts, it is readable. It is not too bad and you can definitely understand the story. The translator has done a good job of explaining idioms and meanings and overall the translation is good. The translator's notes are also cute.

So, it is a good read to make your heart lighter. Thanks to the translator too! <<less

It's very realistic (the main couple don't love each other right away) but they come to love each other together over time, through the trials they face together. ML is very sweet and faithful, even though there's some political scheming happening he tries his best to protect MC. MC is also not a pushover. He observes what is happening and acts accordingly.

I'd love to read more stories like this one. Also, the title got fixed now by the translator so don't worry about it :D

The characters are very well portrayed, and nothing feels fake or rushed wish is soooo rare

the story progress nicely into intricated court plots and very slow pace romance. Some things are a bit cliché, but the whole is highly enjoyable. Probably because it's dense, and very relatable, it's one of my best reading so far

4.75/5*

This novel was different than expected, but in good way! There are twists and turns, only revealed in the end.

I thought there will be lots of face slapping, dog blood, harem and court politics. But no. It was there, but in moderate and realistic level.

I also thought that this was something like tyrant pampering wife diary, but it wasn't. I got hooked from the start as I really, really wanted to know how the two are going to fall in love with eachother. As in the beginning, they both didn't... more>> like eachother. It is slow romance, but thanks to fact they were married, it wasn't too tedious or frustrating like some other slow romance stories.

I loved that cp were not totally OP. Too many other novels choose the easy way, some cheat system, rebirth, or some other abilities that gives MC/ML such big advantage and knowledge about future. Not that I don't enjoy those stories, but often in the end it is less satisfying because success came to quickly or too easy.

That wasn't the case here. The Mpreg was the only cheat that cp got. And the Mpreg and and everything around it including their HE was not a 100% smooth sailing one. There were obstacles and they had to fight for it. But it was so so beautiful in the end how they managed to become the emperor and empress!

MC and ML are such dumbstruck, silly parents!! LOVED them. They don't throw the kid to the nannies, despite that they were the rulers of the country and it would be totally justified considering it is ancient era.

One annoying thing: the trope re the annoying fake 'love rival' took too many chapters. Luckily, no dragging misunderstandings here thanks to a reasonable, smart and sensible MC. So, I didn't spat blood like some other readers. Misunderstandings was cleared up pretty soon.

WARNING: Translation isn't great, but gets better after 20 (?) chapters or so. <<less

A mostly fluffy historical slice-of-life. The translator is not the best at Chinese or English, so there's some misinterpretations and omissions (I had to read the raws a few times), on top of grammatical issues. However, historical novels are difficult to translate, so the translator's efforts should still be appreciated.

There's not a lot of action or drama in this story. I do like the main character's independent thinking (as he is a man), and his character personality is one I generally tend to like: low-key, has goals but isn't unreasonably... more>> vengeful, self-aware, even-tempered.

The romance is not bad as well, the ML is not the commonly found possessive/yandere (but he does get jealous), he's more of a tsundere in the beginning.

However, for the majority of the story, despite the MC's status as a 'man, ' all of the plot and drama revolve around his cliched awful family who caused the death of his mother, and the concubine/harem drama (which is written more comedic than threatening) surrounding the ML.

The politics absolutely go over MC's head because he is a stereotypical clueless/naive/dumb-scholar type, even though the ascension politics are simple & very predictable compared to other historical novels.

I thought this story would be more interesting since the title was "rich and powerful" but the MC actually doesn't do anything to get there. He's purely reliant on others to get anywhere and struggles to take any initiative by himself.

Spoiler

He's shown as a super smart (but super naive/innocent/falls easily for people's manipulations) scholar who has an eidetic memory.

Other than a few paragraphs of him treating his own illness or helping the ML solve a plague, he doesn't accomplish much else.

I had some hopes when the author mentioned his goal of striking out on his own to become a merchant several times, but he literally just sits around and waits for his inherited shops managers to give him money on their own.

His becoming "rich/powerful" in the end is just a result of the ML falling in love with him, which doesn't differentiate this story from any other typical historical/harem romance, other than his gender change. #Disappoint#

[collapse]

I do like that the author doesn't kill off every female character, or make the female characters the only villains in the story (thank you author).

And despite the dense translation, it is still ~70% accurate which is better than MTLing it yourself. <<less
