A Demon Lord’s Tale: Dungeons, Monster Girls, and Heartwarming Bliss

Description

One day, I woke up only find out that I’d become a Demon Lord, an individual responsible for protecting a dungeon. The world I’d been spirited away to was one filled with violence. Gigantic monsters wandered through it and competed with each other each and every day for the right to survive. I had no choice but to strengthen my dungeon’s defenses in hopes of living another day—or at least that was what I’d thought. For some odd reason, I instead ended up spending my days in relaxation and bliss.

This is Yuki’s story, my story. It tells the tale of how I spent my days after settling down in a dungeon with a self indulgent, “supreme” dragon girl and a young vampire.

Edit 2019 - TL:

Since I stopped reading a while ago since I had read the last one (raw) at the time I do not remember very well, but, I do not really remember that the MC was so rude to all the other characters, that the level of intelligence was so low or that in general the interactions between characters were so lack of emotion.
I guess I'll stick to the original version and forget what I've read

Previous 2017 - Full Raw:

Here we see that the voting should not... more>> be allowed to novels that don't have a defined minimum of chapters (unless they are short) or force comments to those who vote and avoid bad votes because of prejudice, I will not take into account the translation since I read it in its original language, so.

You must read it!!... you don't need to thank me.

5 stars - For not being boring (as an agent who wants to be a teacher in another world).
5 stars - For true comedy (not like that with a pe*verted highschooler with a red glove and his oppai here oppai there).
5 stars - For the interaction MC - heroines (and that's it, you should have enough with this, comparing with other novels that are better voted).
5 stars - Because I want a dragon Waifu (and caress her little horns and wings, don't forget the wings).
5 stars - For being more sweet than child-raising novels (that have no emotions in a world without cuisine).
5 stars - For never focusing on food (like mayonnaise and mayonnaise, wait, also add soy and...).
5 stars - For being a well executed cliché (although all the novels have clichés in some degree or another).
5 stars - Because the dragon Waifu deserves it. (no dragon Waifu no life)
5 stars - Because the harem is not a joke (it takes time, as well as the plants you have in your room because you are alone in this life...)
5 stars - Because I feel the love (that she never gave me...).
5 stars - Because this web doesn't accept anymore.

Bad jokes aside, the strength of this novel is the interaction between the main characters, I still think how I read more than 100 chapters without getting bored in one day, maybe the weak point (if it can be considered in that way, in a novel in which development is like a slice of life) is the variety of characters (as well as male characters) and the long development (which seems to be introducing more and more), even so, does not tire, like having a teenager with a smartphone with a pseudo loli harem, and the romance is not superficial and forced, as in that of a programmer who only wants the high elf or the pseudo political romance of the eighth child of a low-ranking noble. Even so, what many forget is about the dragon Waifu!!, how dare they, even if Kira forgives them, just remember those meromero (メロメロ) scenes, break my heart like a piñata... <<less

This one is thoroughly a slice of life novel, alright. What you should seek from this novel isn't fighting scenes, or schemes, or politics, or whatever heavy matters you could think of. It's a f*cking Slice of Life spiced with Comedy and mundane, down-to-earth, normal interaction between sentient beings who love to live their life leisurely.

Just enjoy this novel as it is. Why are you hoping something like Dungeon Defense from slice of life, geez.

—edit: as per my current chapter, my opinion hasn't changed. Not even a bit. It's... more>> still a f*cking slice of life, in a good way. Sure there were fight scenes. Sure there were conspiracies. But our MC never gave a d*mn because his waifus >>>> everything. Screw them all, he would just curbstomped them through dungeon cheats. <<less

Not really recommended this novel,
Spoiler

It's just generic novel where the MC Reincarnated into another world as Dungeon Master (and Demon Lord), surrounded with Cute Girls (Dragon, Loli Vampire, Beastkin etc), as you expect, there is no single 'Guy' in his Harem World (All-Girls Squad).

-There is no World-Building, less character appeared, just plain slice-of-life where the MC Playing 'Happy Sugar Life' with their lovey-dovey girls.

-The MC itself is kind of sh*t, he kill all the knight who come to his territory without any doubt, without any regret. At this point I think I like this novel, but everything changed just in few chapter afterward. Later there is a Girl who called as a "Hero" come to his Territory, as you can expect from Harem-Isekai genre, yup the first Rule of Generic Harem-Isekai genre is "MC Will Never Let Any Girl Die, and Ofc Later She Will Join Into His Harem World", same as this novel.

well, I gotta say that the novel were a disappointment. Based on what I read through many chapters, the MC is a dungeon master who is very much interacted to only 2 characters which are the elder dragon and loli vampire. While 3 chara were extras (the s*aves girls who become his maid and a fenrir). Do you know who was the most irritating ? The loli elder dragon. Yeah, that silver girl, her job is to eat and having boring activity. In a short chapters, MC fell in love... more>> with her and which even worst is that the loli vampire were in charge for controlling MC from approaching other women (this is getting into a wrong direction). Lastly, this is not a harem. Its a tr*sh harem.

Managing Dungeon? Forget it, Becoming an Adventurer ? Top priority, World building ?nah, too lazy. Enemies? Politicians. Monsters? To few.

CardboardTL is in my top five list for all the translators I've read on NovelUpdates. Kudos for keeping the original linguistic flavor alive in relevant English slang. The story is really good, too! Manages to stay original and reverse some tropes in clever ways while landing solidly in the "My pace OP isekai" genre. Up to chapter 90, the action all seems to come to the door-step of a homebody MC, but that doesn't mean he's unwilling to visit the neighbors and lay down the law. If I have one... more>> complaint with this story it's that the game elements seem to have been dropped from the latter half of the chapters, in particular, the dungeon development aspects. When the author throws up their hands as if to declare, "this guy is too OP to track, I give up!" They've usually done something wrong. In this case, the stats of things haven't had much relevance to the plot of the story where conflict is infrequent, so it's not a deal breaker for me. However, part of the wish-fulfillment OP fun of stories like this has less to do with analyzing the numbers for verisimilitude and rating who the MC can throw down with and more to do with watching the numbers climb to silly levels and giggling about the absurdity of it all. In that respect, I hope the author comes back around to stat blocks soon. <<less

i am now having a hard time continuing to read this novel even though it is a bit good as a slice-of-life novel because:

MC is a major pe*ophile. In the earlier chapter it isn't much but as the story goes on the pe*ophile tendencies of the MC is increasing that most chapters have words like: Illuna is so cute while doing this, Shii is so cute and so on so forth that destroys the pace of the story because of sudden s*upid lines such as those and it is done... more>> too much in later chapters that it is starting to get annoying and when it comes to introducing women the author basically just go like this "that woman is quite a hottie with a great body" just that and nothing has even been said of what the girl look like, the color of eyes or hair and how old she looks but when it comes to loli's the author truly put so much detail in saying many things and not only that in the next chapter the author will once again said what the loli looks like with so much emphasis.

Also the MC doesn't put much thought on getting stronger even though he has an enemy that he will eventually need to fight who is as strong or stronger than him and just laze around in his dungeon doing nothing and then he will just win against said opponent through PLOT ARMOR which is truly annoying. <<less

I don't know how the author does it, but they make the story simultaneously interesting and mind-numbingly boring. The main issue of it is the protagonist. He's basically a high school reincarnator with a chuuni supervillain mentality who denies he has a chuuni supervillain mentality, and as a result often does s*upid things alongside brilliant things.

For example; he constantly insists he's not human in mentality any further, and can thus deal with certain things no self-respecting human would do, but then he gets cold feet with gore and the possibility... more>> of growing more non-human elements as he evolves. He's simultaneously lazy and hard-working, refusing to properly practice his skills but also properly taking care of his dungeon.

That being said, the slow-life aspect is fine. The lack of serious plot is fine. But the s*upidity of the protagonist at times is really grating, especially since he does show competence in regards to other important tasks. <<less

Well... it's bland... just ur usual reincarnation stuff, it basicly just like the title said.... don't expect much of it.... it's mostly slice of life stuff..... not that I hate it.... if there's something that put me off then that is :

... more>>MC didn't hesitate to commit a massacre, a bit of humanity still left in him, but all he did is issue a warning, once the warning is ignored he massacred them all without restrain... but the f*cking thing is... once the invader is a girl he hesitate like.... wtf?!!! He just scare her off... now that realy putting me off/spoiler]

All in all the title said it all.... what the story is about, n the character of the MC.... I would give it 1... but the slice of life's not bad so I raise it to 2..... n the potential (i realy hope I hit the mark) of MC and lefy's romance raise it to 3.... for now 3/5 <<less

I mean... it's not perfect.

Let me put it this way, one of the biggest flaws most Japanese web novels/light novels have is that they seem to be missing an overarching goal or plot to move the story forward.

Most of the times this isn't an issue when you can see that the format is episodic with a plot that encompasses a couple of chapters and then meanders back onto slice of life tidbits that are interesting for characterization and character progression.

But I'm having a bit of trouble with this novel because... more>> it feels inconsistent and it's riddled with potential that the dear author kind of dismisses with the wave of a hand.

Several things are "hinted" at in the chapters that may or may not become important later, but it focuses on single episode plot devices that are done and over and really don't seem to connect with an overarching plot or theme or any kind of cohesive structure... (except with ONE character, and she isn't our MC)

So far, it feels like a kid that got a new toy, played with it for a couple of days, then got another toy and forgot about the first toy.

He's "the first demon lord that seems to be really sentient", he's "the king of dragons" he has "the blessing of the spirits" he's got "the hardest dungeon to conquer" and he simply doesn't have anything to do with all of this...
and doesn't seem to really care.

Don't get me wrong, the way he achieved all that was interesting and entertaining but in the end... pointless, because nothing haves substance or weight in the story.

It feels like playing Skyrim... you know, how you start with the idea "I'm gonna focus on Stealth!" or "two handed swordsman" or "pure illusion magic" and at the late game you become "Jack of all trades" "Leader of every guild" "Thane of all the provinces" "Archmage of the Mages guild"... and then you go and underwhelmingly kill Alduin by spamming "summon familiar" and "sneak attack"

That being said... everything else is fine, the characterizations are heartwarming and the effort the translator put into capturing the way the original story is supposed to sound (which is obvious a very strong cultural switch) is very well done, you don't really "notice" it, which is exactly how it should be done

no dude, he's not "inserting" words to make him sound a certain way, he's using his knowledge to make his character sound how he would sound if he was an English native

the story is so filled and riddled with JAPANESE pop culture references most of the humor would be GONE if the translator just focused to translating verbatim. <<less

Really pushed far for this one before reviewing, got to 208 chapters and I have really mixed feeling about this one. This is well written mostly, easy to read despite the numerous side chapters (arriving at 200 and you have more side chapters than "real" chapters after that).

Like I said, easy read, well enough written, quite cute and sweet, between adventure and slice of life. But the author is so f*cking sexist that it become really cringy and the harder to read as you keep going. The wrost is that... more>> it is really an insidious sexism, sweet and gentle, not violent, but still, in the end every female characters are robbed of their decisions, opinions and actions by the main character, and so with a big smile on everybody's face. This is way more dangerous than violent sexism in my eyes, because that way it can make you think that nothing is wrong here.

So easy read if you like slice of life, but quite the insidious sexist manifest. <<less

Overall, a decent novel with interesting and well established characters, and most importantly, that includes the main character. In the sea of dull isekai MCs whose only purpose is allowing the most boring of people to self-insert, having an MC with as much personality as the others, if not more, is enough to make the novel stand out. And MC isn't the only character above isekai standards. Hell, the pet wolf who can't even talk has more personality than most isekai MCs. Other than that, the novel also has a... more>> decently compelling setting and plot, with a bit of politics here and there involving different countries and races. The plot isn't the focus however, and it progresses very slowly. I would like to see more countries and find out what they're about and how they will interact with the other characters, which at least shows that it's done well even though it's not the focus. Although the very last few chapters (374 & 375) had some characters revealing motives that didn't really make any sense given their previous actions. But as it's literally the latest chapters as of writing this review I won't take that into consideration.

A few general things to take note of:

Given the setting, you would probably expect there to be some "dungeon defense" content, but there is virtually none. The dungeon system is used a lot for various things, but developing an actual labyrinth to deal with intruders is not one of those things. Well, defenses are prepared, but so far anyway they haven't been used at all. It kinda turns into an inside joke. Speaking of, a lot of abilities that MC acquires are also never used. As someone who has no interest in combat, this is more of a good thing to me, but I guess it could be an issue to some. Of course, the novel is not over yet, but still, some stuff was introduced like 300 chapters ago.

If you're considering reading this novel after having seen its title and description, you probably don't hate slice of life. Still, I have to warn you that there is a LOT of it. There are also arcs where the characters go out on an adventure to solve some conflict or another, but I'd say more than half the novel is made up of episodic slice of life chapters. Some are even placed in the middle of an adventure, which felt quite strange. Like, in the middle of the characters being in a somewhat suspenseful encounter in some other country, there's gonna be a chapter or two about those characters suddenly eating barbeque at home. I'd bet that would be quite annoying if you waited a week for that chapter. I'm not sure if putting those chapters with the other slice of life in between adventures would even be better, as there are already so many in a row there. I like slice of life quite a bit myself, and they are definitely well written and fun, but the amount of them still made me wish the next arc would come sooner a few times. I think they would be easier to get through if they had some continuity instead of being episodic. Or if they had more development of any kind. Often, stuff that is considered slice of life still has some sort of development going on, like meeting new characters, getting character development, in the case of this novel there's playing with new dungeon facilities, crafting items, or spawning modern technologies. While there is some of that, most of it is just eating, playing and banter. Which, again, is well written and good fun, and if that's just the thing you like you will love this novel.

This novel has a lot of lolis, but while you can certainly call the author a lolicon, the main character never deviates from a pure guardian figure, and there is no content whatsoever that can't be called purely wholesome and cute. Well, you could say that some jokes are made which make light of pedophilia, like the girls calling MC a pedo because his monster gained a loli form, or saying "wow, you didn't bring back another little girl this time, how surprising" upon MC's return. But, especially in the scope of japanese media, I can't see anything to be upset about at all here.

The novel also features a harem. I don't like harems and I think a novel can always do better without one, but the author here at least clearly tried to improve upon the whole harem formula. MC has a favorite which is made very clear to everyone, he made a choice and got together with her first, and always voices his reluctance to getting more girls. Yet still, it's like japan just can't deal with an isekai not turning into a harem, and his first, chosen wife pretty much forces MC to get together with other girls. I appreciate MC's attitude, but that development towards a harem was so disappointing and unnatural. His wife explains herself, the usual "I like the other girls a lot too and I don't want to see them suffer", and you might think "yeah that's reasonable" at first, until you actually think of a reverse scenario. Like, in this case say MC's loyal pet wolf evolves, gains a humanoid form, and falls in love with a girl in the harem. While the girl is friendly with the wolf boy, she's not really interested in him as a lover and doesn't want to be unfaithful at all, but because MC respects and likes his pet, he not only accepts, but pretty much forces his pet into his harem. This is a complete equivalent, yet something like it will never and has never been written in a light novel, because nobody would accept it, and it would clearly be seen as an unnatural action on the part of MC. While forgoing the harem would be the best option, you could at least improve further upon the way it was done in this novel by acknowledging this contradiction. Because it would make sense that MC would think about it. He could say something like "Lefi, I would never accept you having another lover, no matter how much I liked the guy or how assured I was that you still love me, so I find it unsettling to see you not only accept it, but even encourage it." Even if this was only followed by "That's just how I am", this acknowledgement would still do a lot for me. At that point, I can only think, well, who am I to question the mentality of a fictional character? Not to mention a girl, in a different world, who's not even human. Still, I expect the main character to think of this, else I feel like the author is trying to hide the unfairness, hide the fact that he's designed heroines to be unnaturally accomodating, which is kinda pathetic.

Speaking of, a few times when I've complained about harems and such, I've had replies the likes of "you're reading a wish fulfillement novel, what do you expect?" But I don't get this destructive attitude that implies your wish fulfillement novel can't also be good. Unnaturally accomodating characters, an MC who beats obstacles by pulling powers out of nowhere instead of using his head, cartoon-ass dumb villains who are only there to make MC look good, a world where literally everything revolves around MC, a complete lack of side characters doing their own thing and having their own romance, etc. These things are not necessary pillars of a wish fulfillement story, they're just symptoms of cheap, easy to make bad stories. Improving on those issues is only going to improve the story, no matter what, and turn a cheap one into a much more satisfying wish fulfillement novel. The author of this novel certainly tried to do exactly that, and for the most part succeeded. The harem is the only thing I don't quite like. Maybe also a bit lacking in side characters doing things that don't involve MC.

I feel like I've mostly complained, but there really are plenty of things to like about this novel. The main character is unique and his antics are always fun to read. He's also sincere and doesn't act like a teenager regarding romance, which is a rare sight in light novels. While I complained about the harem, the romantic relationships themselves are great, and very well balanced. Also, one of the usual issues with harem which is that the large amount of heroines makes each of them lack exposition and development, does not apply here due to the sheer amount and quality of character exposition. I don't have that much more to say since really the main thing that makes a good novel is simply that "the characters are good", and that's something you have to see for yourself.

Lastly, the translation is excellent and incredibly thorough. I don't remember noticing a single mistake, typo or awkward sentence, which is not something I can even say about most professional licensed releases. I ought to say it's on the liberal side, which I much prefer over literal translations. This is mostly apparent on the MC's speech and thoughts, which use, let's say... "very colorful" language, which just cannot be directly translated. It might be jarring if you're coming from having read the manga where MC sounds a lot more tame, and I did wonder if they didn't overly change the feel of the character by taking too much liberty with the translation, but after reading more of the novel and seeing how consistent it is, I'd say it's more likely that it's the manga that doesn't do the character justice. Plus it's simply way more fun, so even if the character's feel in the novel TL isn't completely accurate, I still prefer it this way. That said, it would be fair to say that the novel TL goes overboard in a few places. I doubt, for example, that the author would agree with their character using "autistic" as a derogatory term, if that was changed during TL. So keep in mind if you find some things upsetting that the original text might not have been quite the same. (or alternatively just don't get offended by fictional characters) <<less

Tbh, this is one of the most relaxing works I´ve ever read. While the development of the harem was almost impossible to evade because of how things were going from the beginning, the author built it in a sublime way, justifying it well and with Lefi as the eternal and most important woman of all. If you have time I highly recommend it.

The main character in this story is absolutely unbearable. He's the type to think he's super cool for casting away his humanity. He unironically monologues about how he has become a 'True Villain' and demon lord. Basically he's a giant chuuni. It's like reading about those guys back in school who made edgy jokes and bought a katana with them to class. Also he seems to be sort of a psychopath. For a story with the tag heartwarming, the main character sure seems to commit a lot of cold blooded... more>> mu*der which could have quite easily been avoided if he put in a bit of effort. Basically he'll kill you unless you're an attractive enough girl. The localisation is a bit too much as well.

The story itself is pretty average, it's just the main character that drags it down. <<less

One of my favourite novels. For me it's almost perfect. I've had a really good time reading this. Maybe it's because the protagonist's character is somewhat similar to mine.

It's a relaxing story with a perfect isekai setting which allows you to enjoy life to the fullest.

MC isn't forced to do anything and is just going with the flow following his own wishes. Sometimes he is doing something for fun, sometimes just cause he wants to. There is no logic in some of his actions and there is no need to... more>> search for it or force your own onto him. MC isn't an idiot and he knows (mostly) the consequences of his choices.

There are some moments in which you would have done something the other way or chose a different path, but it's not really a minus for the plot, it just shows that everybody have different thoughts and points of view. <<less

I'm surprised with the negative reviews saying simp, beta, and the usual stuff.

Spoiler

MC actually marry his dragon waifu and make her pregarent (pun intended)

[collapse]

He is decisive to say the least. He knows his priorities, what he can do, and what he cant do. Its pretty rare compared to pushover MC in most light (and web) novels nowadays. He is human, logical but at times driven by his emotions.

MC relationship with his harem members also not developed in a single fateful encounter. They actually started bit-by-bit, pretty slow I'd say.

Spoiler

It took 300 chapters for Leila to be his harem member despite how early they met. The others took dozens of chapters though.

[collapse]

The story is more of slice of life with occasional pitched conflict and twists. It follows the daily life of a man-reincarnated-as-dungeon-master getting friends, helping friends, and just do crazy stuffs such as but not limited to building castle. It often times covers the daily life of the other dungeon resident.

But eh, this might be not everyone's cup of tea ¯\_ (ツ) _/¯ <<less

The writing in this story went from good to horribly cringy. The story is now full of a self-absorbed MC with a personality disorder.

And the translation is mangled by a group who either decided to self-insert their own slangs and insults, or the author is actually an American.

I honestly find this to be one of the better rpg style isekais. The MC is not a complete idiot and his dynamic with Leficios is quite interesting as well. I enjoy slice of life novels in this genre, because overpowered Japanese simps becoming adventurers and collecting herbs whilst remaining eternal virg*ns isn't really my cup of tea. The fact that he has the strongest being in existence living alongside him basically tells us that he would never be in any real danger, which is both good and bad as... more>> we get to focus more on the mechanics and characters instead of constant battles like in Chinese novels, though it also means that no one ever attacks his dungeon which is a bit disappointing.

While I have a lot of good things to say, the negatives of this novel are way too glaring to not mention. Firstly is his personality, I like how is decisive and can kill his enemies, but sparing and reforming the hero just because she is a girl is s*upid and sexist. I also utterly despise the harem element, as it makes no sense in this scenario. He is married to the strongest being in the world (She can literally kill him with a sneeze), yet as Japanese authors like, she immediately becomes a submissive maiden in love who is actively encouraging him to get a harem, something the MC himself doesn't want. The existence of lolis is completely unnecessary and serves no purpose other than some low quality jokes every now and then. Furthermore, I dislike how the MC doesn't actually spend more time with the dragon to learn combat techniques, or explore the far reaches of the world, but instead runs around countries whilst solving their problems like a goody two-shoes pushover even though he really has no need since his territory is basically inviolable. Kingdoms go under change in leadership, get destroyed or become vassals all the time and Japanese MCs need to realize that everything is not just black and white where the invaders are evil and the defenders are good guys in need of saving. <<less

I find this novel great because first, the translation quality is top-notch. Second, even though it’s a harem, the MC develops each relationship very deeply and not just picking up random damsels-in-distress. Third, the MC is not a conceited ass, and I think it’s really refreshing to read.

The slice-of-life elements can be felt really vividly amongst the humorous conversations and adventures. Give it a try!

This is slice of life done right. It's not too slow paced. It manages to capture the daily lives of the main characters and remain interesting. There is combat, including some detailed battle scenes. The battle scenes are done well. There is plenty of adventure and exploration. There is a little bit of dungeon building, but not much time is spent on the details of it. Dungeon building is not the focus of this work.

mmm, a few thing for future readers :

-Don't read this novel if you can't stand polygamy or pe*ophiles in novels. I've seen many rating 1* just because there is harem, lolis. I'm not one to judge others, tbh, but please don't rate this low just because it doesn't suit your ideals.

-Next, this is more or less a slice of life novel with only a bit of action to it, so don't hope for major plots or anything.

-Other than that, this is a good novel. That's all.
