Empires rise and fall on the Yulan Continent. Saints, immortal beings of unimaginable power, battle using spells and swords, leaving swathes of destruction in their wake. Magical beasts rule the mountains, where the brave – or the foolish – go to test their strength. Even the mighty can fall, feasted on by those stronger. The strong live like royalty; the weak strive to survive another day.

This is the world which Linley is born into. Raised in the small town of Wushan, Linley is a scion of the Baruch clan, the clan of the once-legendary Dragonblood Warriors. Their fame once shook the world, but the clan is now so decrepit that even the heirlooms of the clan have been sold off. Tasked with reclaiming the lost glory of his clan, Linley will go through countless trials and tribulations, making powerful friends but also deadly enemies.

Come witness a new legend in the making. The legend of Linley Baruch!

Definitely worth reading. The MC is on the neutral-good side, so he's not Mother Teresa but he's not mass-mu*dering innocents. He has meaningful relationships with friends and his (1) wife, there is NO harem (thank the lord), a very heart-warming read. Overall, this novel is my favorite novel of all time, but my tastes probably don't reflect the majority. However, this is probably the best novel for beginner and intermediate xianxia readers.

I remembered when I mistyped in my keyboard and cl**ked Wuuxaworld's site out of pure curiosity back in early 2014. This is the very first non English and Filipino novel that I read, when Wuxiaworld was only a fledgling site. It brings back so much memories. This introduced me to the world of foreign novels.

But this is a review, and not nostalgia lane, so I will start by saying I give this novel 4 stars.

Plus+

... more>> 1. Cultivation System.

The cultivation system here is not one where you can constantly level up and get stronger as long as you possess the items or energy needed (like MGA). Like really? If you get to live as the scion of the strongest sect, then just seclude yourself forever until you finish absorbing all the needed things to reach the highest cultivation level. Why bother with talent, willpower, and adventuring when your sect has everything you need? That kind of cultivation is dumb.

Instead, advancement here occurs when you obtain insights, enlightenment or a new discovery. Which means that you not only need to pour in effort, you also need luck and talent.

2. Some of the characters are endearing. Like Bebe, or Bebe, or that Bebe.

3. Writing. Of course not the best out of all that I read, but it is around the middle tier.

  • Less use of highfalutin words
  • Easy to understand. Good job to Lord Ren I guess.
  • It at least flows well.
  • Clear and concise.
Cons -

1. Characterization

While there are minor character growths here and there, I need to say that majority of the characters here are like programmed puppets that only act based on their template.

Take Linley or Bebe for example, I cannot decide whether Linley or Bebe has more character growth, which shows the problem.

Most novels tend to focus growth on the MC, since he is the centerpiece. Here, he is the centerpiece, but I am not sure whether he is a 3d or 2.5 d character. Oh, and don't get me started with the side characters.

Take for example Delia, sure she has screentime at the start but after that? It is like she became an answering machine or a plot device. So much for being the MC's love of his life. Check his family too. Really? You just name the kids and that is it? You do not even characterize them? They are all immortals, can't they even spend some time with their loved ones or friends?

2. Maturity levels

They say that wisdom comes with age. Many characters in the novel have ages spanning millenia, but why do they act like h**ny, short-tempered or just plain idiotic? I get it that pride and power could be a factor, but it cannot just suddenly bring their IQ to below normal right? They are not kids. They are fossils. Living fossils with working minds.

3. Deus ex machina

This is probably what I hate the most out of all plot devices. Sure it works, but it is dirty- that is why it is called an *sspull. You cannot be lucky all the time. Thankfully, many could be believable, if you stop nitpicking about everything.

By the way, I give it +1 star since this is the very first novel I read. Call it sentimental value. <<less

So, normally I don't write reviews but I guess I have to for my first novel, I was looking for something to read a year back and saw the description of this novel and I just binged through it all, reading day and night, I quit gaming for it lol. But yeah a year later I still think about this novel and have read many others due to this novel as it introduced me to the world of eastern novels, Ive been reading novels everyday for the past year a... more>> few hours a day minimum and yet this is still one of my top 3.

For anyone that hasn't read this definitely give it a go, its a very popular novel and im sure it was also the first novel many other people have read and will recommend. <<less

☆☆☆ 3.4

First let me say - This isn't depicted anything like the manga... which is good!
Second - Some of the other reviews I found to be misleading / unsubstantial.

Positives:
World Building & Pacing - (other reviewers didn't enjoy the time skips, however, I found them 100% appropriate)
Spoiler

Who wants to read chapters about simple training and raising a family / having a normal life?... Not me. Another positive is that you get a clear sense of the world, realms and dimensions.
Furthermore, I found the training of each of his element powers appropriate.

[collapse]

Negatives:
The MC is definitely an idiot the more you read. He CONSTANTLY puts himself in situations which under normal circumstance would result in his death if not for plot armor. He doesn't question simple things...'why his long time best friend would suddenly act weird then betray him while acting out of character... or Why mysterious high level figures are killing people of his kingdom... and after he kills a few of them he doesn't even check a single of their belonging... After vengeance, he doesn't even ask 'Why' his mother was taken, when he knows the most powerful person of his world. He doesn't even know what "why" means! Too many more examples... He's definitely muscle brained idiot!

He ALWAYS causes trouble, let's people get away, then stereotypical young masters of course come back for revenge and cause more trouble... additionally the MC never even disguises himself when he knows everyone wants to kill him... The author is a bit of an dolt for designing such a dolt.

It's a classic though.

This is a tough one.

The good:

This starts off as a fairly enjoyable read. The protagonist is mostly likable, and the plot surrounding him is fairly interesting. The world canon isn't bad. At least the author made an effort. There are some interesting ideas now & then.

... more>> The Bad:

I should stress that as much as I have many bones to pick with this story, I did enjoy reading it.

Mostly.

That said...

None of the characters are particularly deep, and other than being available or filling their roles as plot points, with a few exceptions most are ignored shortly after their use.

As the story progresses, the quality diminishes. Initially it's quite interesting and at least 3-4 stars- a few chapters maybe even 5- but after the halfway point it drops a star or so as the author starts forcing the plot and dropping significant parts of the plotline. Towards the end, the plot is a meandering mess, with the MC wasting centuries losing focus/chasing side quests, and you realize lots of hinted development will never happen.

More or less another 'everyone else has been trying hard for centuries, but the protag will do it better, faster, etc.' story- this doesn't deliver anything spectacular, though it is supposedly (in a sense) a classic of the genre.
(This pretty much means other authors do the same thing, only better now.)

There are a few problematic points that should be aspects of world tone, but end up being issues of writing style (as they are handled pretty unevenly). For example- the world is _intended_ to be quite competitive, with a lot of strife, oppression & 'dog eat dog' nature being the norm. In actuality, it's pretty much just talked about & rarely seen, except when the author wants to make a point of killing thousands of innocents for effect.

There are a number of very skimpily written 'forced plot' events which seem to be a bit illogical that you'll just have to 'roll with' if you stop & think about them. I wish they were better, but it's not so much a 'dealbreaker' on continuing, though I'll say 'the author was in a slump' & hope the rest gets better...

The main character is generally portrayed as better than he actually is. There's a LOT of 'author preference' in the presentation & plot focus. As mentioned before, many things get casually overlooked/forgotten.

There's a fair amount of 'bragging narrative' in the writing style (common for this genre of Chinese novel), and extolling someone's abilities/potential as being (inconsistently) tenfold, a hundredfold, or a thousandfold, etc. These should be taken as 'a big increase' since the author doesn't really seem to have very solid rules for the world- as the actual results (when they develop) are quite inconsistent (we really won't go into his broken math sense). Actually, there's a LOT of reminders, comparisons, etc- (a good 15-20% of the story) letting you know how awesome a particular thing is or could be in the future (these 'in the future' hints should be taken as speculation, not foreshadowing).

Spoiler

Starting with the fact that the MC starts out as a spell caster- when he later develops his 'fighting ability', the whole 'trained in spell casting for decades' thing gets forgotten except as an occasional 'drive by' mention for the sake of some exposition/comparison. I should stress this isn't simply 'Linley chooses to ignore his own power & any/all benefits'- no, spell casters pretty much stop existing in the world once the author decides fighters are more cool. This is 'explained away' under the pretense that spells simply attempt to replicate elemental powers- but somehow the author completely forgot how powerful 'area of effect' spells were described as being, since in the conflict no one seems to use them anymore and instead combats in small groups or as a mass melee- at least until the end, then it's still just many v 1 or whatever other 'advanced strategies' the author thinks make sense. Point is he's forgotten spell use entirely.

I don't know if the author realizes it or not, but the protag is pretty s*upid, and his careless actions are actually the direct cause for most of the senseless deaths in the story. We won't even get into how the protag later quietly benefits from the deaths of others- somehow not realizing that he's actually _cannibalizing_ others spiritually! I guess it's supposed to be ok since he didn't actually do the killing itself?-- but his mentor was a spirit, and there are gods and (mention of) an afterlife- so him assimilating millions of souls in a process that was originally considered evil...

Go figure.

The author does intentionally make him do other things for the sake of plot, though- so 'being a genius' is all about power, not common sense.

There's a lot of innocents dying pointlessly and no character caring. Sometimes Linley is affiliated with some of them, and though he may have claimed some affection- he always forgets they existed in a crisis situation. He's pretty much a cowardly bully actually- only fighting when cornered or thinks he's at an advantage. He'll literally stand around watching people die instead of using his quite significant powers. No, actually he later abandons people to flee & save his own team, only to have to fight the threat anyway after tons of people literally begging for his aid die (and then he has to fight the threat anyway).

This is one of those 'we don't like white knights' stories, sure- but when the author points out 'a bunch of gods coordinated can kill a highgod', the puts a bunch of gods in Linley's face begging to be led- he can't be bothered with telling them 'ok, all attack at once' (like a 'genius' would), because he's too busy trying to save his own skin. I won't even get into how little risk he would have helping people out of the fog sea when he left- or informing anyone of the difficult (but possible) method of escape- to maybe help others. People trapped for trillions of years? Sucks to be you... Also, in b16c15 he actually intervenes in a restaurant brawl, getting the attacked guy killed- to avoid being bumped into/save his food! he of course (as usual) doesn't give 2 shits about the dead guy. He's come a long way from protecting his brother from the injustice of near-death from random saint battles of long ago- now he causes death with his power directly...

There's also a bunch of dumb 'rules', and some ridiculous plot 'solutions' (the creative use of tunneling to avoid detection by the eyes of a god is one of the more laughable). Actually, there's a LOT of bs spouted to try & direct the plot/fill holes:
"Linley, Highgods have their own pride. If you don't go irritate a Highgod, a Highgod generally won't lower themselves to deal with you."
(said after a highgod straight out slaughtered a bunch of saints, then planned on killing Linley just because he had worshipers...)
In short there's a HUGE amount of exposition, 'speculative misdirection', and flat out 'creative misleading'. The story 'tells' you a LOT of stuff- but what it 'shows' you is often a lot less impressive.
Here's the most BS one which attempts to refute math:
"How much money could shopping possibly use up? 10% off was nothing to them. Given the wealth which Linley and Bebe currently had, a discount of 10% was meaningless.". I doubt you're as math-challenged as the author, but no matter how much you have, only 10 10%'s amount to 'all of it'.

The continual increase in the number of times Linley himself forgets 'the most recent important thing' and acts in a way which completely disregards why they were on 'high alert' & 'happy to be alive' just a while ago... Ugh.

It's kinda irritating actually...
MC is a dumbass.

As I continue to read chapters, watching him 'hide his power' while not doing his job as a fiend... seriously- I don't even know why it's 'cool' to have 'hidden power' if you just use it to save your own skin- especially if it's _obvious_ there's no escape, and you just let people die for effect...

And the enemies are allowed to flee, and bring more troubles so often...

I'm at b16c20 now, and I have no idea what the author is thinking. He's made Linley such a chikensh*t in the face of someone more powerful he's completely planned to abandon a fighting ally and use that as a moment to flee (even though he walked through a but-ton of guards & fortifications on the way in. No way having a powerful ally is useful... (sigh)

b19c13- Linley is in a hurry to help out his ancestors in the netherworld. Not going to go into details, but to get favors from a sovereign he agrees to an unreasonable exchange after barely not being killed by that sovereign for ridiculous & unreasonable bs. Whatever- So now he's got to enter the Planar Wars representing death and kill the opposing commanders (most of whom are more powerful than him). Well, sounds legit- get in, do it, get out- right? Maybe he'll get lucky. Oh- but he finds out literally on the door to go in, that he can't leave till the war is over... in 800 years.
'Sure, no problem' you obviously say because as a reader you forgot he was in a hurry to try & save the spirits of his ancestors before they suffered eternal dispersion or whatever in the Netherworld... but if they have to hold on 8 more centuries while struggling to survive, 'no biggie', right?

So clearly the author forgot his own purpose.
Don't worry- he 'plot armor's everyone Linley wants to rescue- even though the Infernal Realm is supposedly so vicious.

There's other messed up stuff in there-- like the author teasing with 'the guy is literally in the next room' twice while Linley's 'looking' for people- but to say the story degrades as it progresses is an understatement.

Also, at b21c29, the plot both becomes super-predictable (because Linley is a plot-forced idiot), and hard to anticipate. Why 'hard to anticipate'? Because the story will end in 15 chapters, and that should be nowhere near enough to wrap up 'all the things' satisfactorily...

Ugh- the ending... quite predictable except for the s*upidity, melodrama, & grandstanding. We won't even talk about 'jumping the shark'... At least it's over.

Yes, many things were left unresolved...

[collapse]

The Different:

Not much actually. I guess the whole 'ascent to godhood' thing _should_ qualify- but it's really just a matter of colorfully naming a few higher level of power. Sure there's the whole 'faith' thing that's kinda a thing- but it really boils down to power levels since that's quickly abandoned. <<less

This is the second novel I read from I Eat Tomatoes and it does not disappoint. It is decently paced and you get immersed once you start reading. I didn't get bored reading it till it ended. MC and supporting characters are really well formed, it doesn't feel like their just robots like some novels made. The world building is quite good. The skill building is just simple but not mediocre, simple is best if I say so myself. The stories does have some flaws but still acceptable, I think... more>> its just how the author wanted it. It's an open ended story but still satisfying. I wanted more even though it already stretched to so many chapters already it really is just that good. <<less

It's not the worst thing I've read, but it definitely wouldn't be nearly as highly rated if it wasn't the first for many people. There's a pretty average number of plot holes, the MC is super lucky, and of course the MC is biggest genius to ever exist (in terms of cultivation at least...).

The reason I give it a 2 despite most of it being average is how annoying the MC is. His relationship with women is irritating, but even worse is how generally dumb and impatient he is. He... more>> constantly rushes into situations that he only survives due to plot armor, where he would be perfectly fine if he just waited a bit and prepared properly. Each of those two things on their own would be annoying enough already, but combined?

Here's an example of what I mean about women:

Spoiler

he constantly refuses free brothel women and ignores all women in general, including the obvious likely love interest who is clearly into him. That would be fine, MC focusing on cultivation instead of women is whatever... but then he falls for some rando as soon as he meets her?? After being together a bit he ends up cucked and ghosted, but soon after he considers her "a friend he's on good terms with" and even saves the guy who cucked him (and tries to harm him after) ???

[collapse]

Here's an example of him being ret*rded, actually the one that made me drop it:

Spoiler

he finds out a super important person harmed his family many years ago, so he wants revenge. He then decides to just go for it in the capital of the faction enemy belongs to, despite knowing that there are multiple people around that he stands no chance against... he doesn't even consider the super important enemy might have defense treasure! He could easily just wait until he has enough power to do it or there's a good opportunity, but no. Minimal prep, goes all in.

I must have read through this novel 4 or 5 times over the years and I have enjoyed it every time. My only major complaint is the ending is rushed, but even that I have come to appreciate more over the years, as it wasn't as if there were many places for the story to go otherwise, and any waffling might have made the novel overstay its welcome. Furthermore, it was foreshadowed previously so it isn't as if it came completely out of nowhere.

Regardless, this novel has given me great... more>> enjoyment over the many hours which I have read it and therefore deserves 5 stars. <<less

utter crap it is same as the every wuxia story, first extreme talent, lucky encounters happen so many times they should be called an everyday lucky walk, no direction, no sense, a plot armor visible from a mile away, and worst of all that character has no development, both emotionally and personality-wise. He remains like a hormone-filled moron, [His father should have committed su*cide for the reason he couldn't even raise a proper fighter there was no need for him to investigate his wife's death rather he... more>> should have spent that time trying to kill his own son so that he wouldn't be an embarrassment to his clan] it is a novel with complete mediocrity, with absolutely nothing new to bring just some name changes compared to other wuxia novels, where they might have a 10/100 intelligence Linley only has about -2/10 of intelligence.
and have I mentioned that "spirit grandpa" doesn't do very much 'cause he doesn't need to add him to make him overpowered the author has done a horrible job in making sure that *plot holes* are bigger than the plot itself!

if you are an experienced wuxia/xianxia/xuanhuan reader don't waste your time on this crap I'll rather watch someone vomit than read this puke that "I eat tomatoes" has written.

don't go on other reviews they are either newbies or paid I can assure you that 'cause anyone who has read more than 5 wuxia novels will find this disgusting 🤢

the translator has done a very good job regarding the novel absolutely praiseworthy. <<less

It's been years since I read this, my first Chinese novel. It's a bit biased but I rate this 5 stars.

Coming from IET you can expect a neat plot. Yeah it comes with your usual tropes of flaws like op MC, plot armor, and so on, but I'm glad that CD is my first novel because it has a nice story, a clear power level, a good world building that leaves me surprised, and a typical good natured MC with no harem.

It comes with your typical flaws but it's quite... more>> mild really. There are other novels out there that gives me better story or better world or more strategic MC, but they also come with worse quirks.

First time reader? Read this, not to mention it's completely translated. <<less

This was actually one of my first few Chinese novels. I read the manhua first, then the novel._.

I liked it at first and remember spending hours at a time binge reading. The world building is pretty strong which is neat. Especially how being a saint level required understanding of the universe as part of each individuals unique development of combat skills.

I dropped the novel because:

The characters are really really REALLY bland and flat. Even the MC is really flat, his main concerns is training and vengeance, that's practically it. The... more>> supporting characters are also flat.

The only thing you will ever know about the female characters is how beautiful they are. Every time a female character appears, the author always goes on to talk about how they can be considered one of the most enchanting beauty. That's it.

I don't have a problem with authors beautifying their characters, however that is another story if all they are is pretty. But if strong characters isn't a concern of yours, then you might enjoy it.

Oh yeah, but beware, there's a lot fillers without any main contribution to plot. <<less

Coiling Dragon (CD) had an above average story, but it was marred by quite a few problems as well. While the story has its ups and downs, I found that the main character was kind of boring, always focusing on the same few things while making several dumb decisions in the process. The world itself was unique, and some side characters were interesting too, but after the first third or so of the story, the characters basically stayed the same, aside from leveling up in power. Prior to reading this,... more>> I've read a few other web novels, including Stellar Transformation (ST) and Desolate Era, also by the same author. While I won't compare them, as they have very different plots, I will say that reading ST before CD definitely made me appreciate CD a bit more. That being said, I think I would give CD a 3.5/5 as a standalone novel, but I don't mind rounding up because I did enjoy it overall. Since this isn't my first WN, and since I've read several others, I don't think CD captivated me in any special way or gave me a feeling of nostalgia like some other readers. With all this in mind, I'll take a bit of time to give a quick summary, then a list of pros/cons, followed by some final thoughts.

Spoiler

The story centers around our main character, Linley Baruch, who basically tries to reach the pinnacle of power, as with most other WNs. However, the story mostly becomes a story about revenge, as our MC tries to find the killer of his parent (s) / In fact, this leads Linley to make several dumb decisions throughout the novel, and makes him a very one-track minded character, who focuses solely on power and revenge. This basically occupies the first half of the novel; yet, in the second half, he starts feuds with the enemies of his clan, and the same story is repeated, only on a larger scale with more powerful enemies. Because of this, Linley is somewhat boring as a character.

There are some interesting, fun side characters throughout the story. For example, Bebe is a funny, combative type of character who starts trouble and fools around a lot; he's a good example of a character who, despite being static throughout, is enjoyable. Beirut and Bluefire are cool and mysterious, and change as Linley gets stronger. There are a few other single-personality characters who are entertaining, like Gates, which add to the story. That being said, there are tons of one-off characters, characters who basically have no relevance but keep appearing, and characters that are repeats of each other, which detracts from the story.

The world itself is expansive: the Yulan continent is pretty massive and populous, and various places in it are visited throughout the story. There are major powers and lots of landmarks, making it seem like a more lively, interesting place than many other WN universes. The later parts of the story introduce new planes in the universe, which provide a very contrasting environment compared to the Yulan plane. This variation and detail is great, and makes the universe more immersive.

With regards to romance, it's fairly heavy in the beginning, but after he finally settles down with one person (which obviously happens), it basically just becomes a burden for the MC. The author has never had very compelling romance, and it's not what the story is really about, so I didn't really care about it either way. If you were expecting a harem, sorry to disappoint you.

[collapse]

Pros:

  • The overarching story is pretty cool, and the power-level system are done very well (even if there are lots of time skips).
  • The universe is described with great detail and populated heavily, making for a much more immersive world than some other WNs.
  • The MC isn't always on the backfoot; there are times when the story relaxes because the MC isn't being chased and isn't in any particular danger. This allows for those relief moments after long arcs of fighting/running, while at the same time building suspense for what might happen next.
  • The power system and the Laws/Daos in the story are different from the usual: it's based on a more Western approach to fantasy, rather than the typical Chinese WN approach (laws vs. Dao, five elements vs. four elements, Churches to worship gods vs. sects and buddhism). It's not necessarily better on its own, but it's unique enough to be a positive.
Cons:

  • There are way too many characters who basically have no reason to exist, or don't contribute very much at all to the Linley's efforts or the story itself. These end up just being meaningless blocks of text. Added to this is that fact that lots of things are done just for the sake of progressing Linley's power, and when those tasks are finished, those results basically don't matter to the story.
    Spoiler

Haeru basically has no relevance to the story other than being just another Saint-level combatant for intimidation (and even then, he's fairly weak), yet he takes up a decent amount of chapters. His biggest accomplishment is that he warns Linley of something going wrong, and runs away. Jenne and her whole arc are pointless; she basically just becomes a character used to explain the administration of the Baruch Empire later. There was no real reason for Linley to help her, and her continued existence didn't add anything to Linley's party. Linley's sons/daughters, as well as lots of his extended relatives, have no reason to be mentioned as much as they are, because they don't contribute anything to the story apart from showing that Linley is "growing". Later in the story, the revival of certain characters basically has no point, since they basically do nothing but hang out in the courtyard of Linley's mansion once they're revived. There are some forgettable characters that have way more space in the story than necessary (looking at you, Jenkin, Dixie, Fain, Catherine...).

    [collapse]
  • Linley makes some questionable, s*upid, and even downright illogical decisions throughout the novel. It's justified by saying that it goes along with his principles, or it's on a whim, or it's to help others, or whatever other reason. This sort of thing happens to progress the story, but it's really annoying and breaks immersion because it's hard to just go with Linley's s*upid decisions sometimes.
  • There are various plot holes and contradictions throughout the novel, most of which don't really matter. In fact, I'm quite surprised that, for the most part, time is referenced accurately by the author, despite all the time skips.
  • The very end is actually decent. However, it's incredibly rushed; the last few chapters of the last book seem like they were all written on the same day because the author was running out of time. Additionally, there were lots of things that were basically accepted as "it happened so that's that, " which need an explanation.
    Spoiler

How did Grandpa Doehring, someone who couldn't even activate the ring and was only at Saint level, keep his soul in the ring despite dying? Why did Augusta fight with the Four Divine Beasts in the first place? Who picks the Planar Overseer? What's the point of the Overgod missions (or do you really expect me to believe they just do it for fun, when they're supposed to have no emotions) ?

Overall, the story is above average, but there are many things that kept me from being immersed, or annoyed me in the way that it was written. The story is nowhere near perfect, but it's a nice read if you're looking for something not terribly long, with a unique world to it, and which differs from the standard Chinese-style WNs. <<less

As the first Xianxia novel that I have read, I could say that this is not perfect. In fact, there are a lot of flaws and plot holes especially the ending as if they couldn't wait to finish the story as the author did not even gave a proper closure to the characters in it. Nevertheless, I've read quite a few novels after this but they never gave me the "feels" that Coiling Dragon gave me (I actually cried a lot while reading this lol). So this novel is definitely... more>> one of my most favorite and it will always have a special place in my heart no matter how many novels (with the same genre) I read. So to anyone who just started reading this type of novels, I highly recommend this because it will surely be a gateway to addiction to this world of Xianxia to all of you.. (Insert evil laugh)

I would also like to give thanks to the author I Eat Tomatoes and to all the translators who put so much efforts to give us a chance to read this novel. Kudos to everyone ?? <<less

Basically my favorite chinese novel/manga/story/whatever the f*ck. That being said it had its flaws. Especially near the end. The author drops and pretty much ignores the interesting cultivation system he came up with and gives MC a super power boost that just ignores all the cool aspects of cultivating to a higher level (as in fusing more laws and such). The biggest blunder was the last book.... oh boy the ending was SO rushed I don't even have words. It was literally the author jamming two or three books worth... more>> of information into one and making it very simplified like a summary rather than a story. It starts to go downhill after the book Metamorphosis (which is when MC gets super power boost). That being said I loved everything about this story including the MC. He's very likable and doesn't really use any cheats (besides the above mentioned power boost). Linley is just a cultivation freak and he lives/breaths cultivation. The romance wasn't spectacular and I know a lot of people don't like the female lead, but I thought it was nice/simple and sweet. I was content with it. Oh before I forget another fault on the author's part was completely forgetting or ignoring old established characters and never mentioning them after a certain point. This especially irked me because those characters were so awesome (ie. Disri, Thane, Dyllin and his crew). Some characters are also introduced as seemingly important or relevant later on, but never get mentioned afterwords. <<less

This was my first novel and it's what got me into the genre. The story starts off slow but descriptive, as it pulls you in with minor tribulations and the sheer awe of the world the character lives in. As the plot progresses things become hectic but remain easy to follow for the reader. Finally, in terms of character development, this novel is second to none. Coiling Dragon is the only novel I've read that actually made me laugh and cry. There's so much action, intrigue, and to some extent,... more>> even realism.

What really brings it all together, though, is the ending. Coiling Dragon shows that the main character never had any plot armor; he was fighting against the universe itself from the very beginning. He, at many junctures, could have given up, but persevered through his own power.

And that is what makes Coiling Dragon worth reading. <<less

My review in a nutshell.

This is one of the best xianxia novel i've read so far, I love the plot, the MC's desposition and character interaction. I like that they didn't bombard you with so much characters that you don't feel any resonance with the characters aside from the MC. Honestly, it even made me shed a tear or 2 whenever a character dies (not much death though, thank God). The side characters wasn't neglected and I love how the mystery just unravels right in front of you and you... more>> could tell it was well thought out.

If there's a flaw I would give this, it would probably be the ending. I would honestly give this a 4.5 because of the rushed and lukewarm ending IMO

Spoiler

i also hate that grandpa doehring wasn't resurrected. Y!!! I understand that his death was needed in order for the MC to grow but y couldn't he be resurrected?? ??

First part on is planet is a great novel, even if the MC has the better friend ever, a friendly autor ! It's a lot childish cause what ever happens you know that the MC will always make it on top, but you read it with a happy smile.

Then me got the second part and that's then the story became boring. at start you go on cause the first part was good but after you juste force yourself to endure the bad writing to reach the end.

And more than... more>> boring it's take off all the pleasure of the first part, very desapointing

At the end of this novel I thoroughly checked all the novel of this autor to never again read him ! (even thought a liked the first part)

He is the king of s*upid filler repetition, (can't read anmore thing like "black robed red hair man attack then the purple robed man bleu haired guys attack from being and then the black robed man redhaired guy counter the attack etc...) forgot lot of intersting thing and people.
Seems like the first and seconde part of the story wasn't writen by the same guy in fact !

It's like reading a 12 years old boy essay.

I'll Never again read I eat tomatoes ! <<less
