Solid reverse transmigration story. Long story short, Earth is the world being transmigrated into by players from another world. This is a clever twist which provides immediate fuel for conflict and tension that automatically forces the reader to examine the tropes of the VRMMO/tranmigration genres.

In terms of character building, plot progression, worldbuilding, it is generally good, if not stand out, and the world generally retains consistent logic and fairly minimal plot holes despite the high complexity of the basic idea.

If there's one major problem, it's that the story is poor... more>> at maintaining tension and the kind of buildup and payoff that often defines great serials like webnovels

Pet peeve: I am immensely annoyed at his insistence on keeping his B-tier pet and using vast amounts of resources on it despite almost immediately getting a S-tier pet because he thinks it's cute, since his pets he's not using are more powerful than him. Especially since you can be damn near guaranteed plot armor will make it super-powerful. The implication that no player or awakened would have ever tried to raise a common low-tier pet is fundamentally absurd given how players actually play games (and part of the setup is that the extradimensional Players are basically like humans, as humans are have been made in their image). <<less

A good read, quite realistic in terms of how weak the MC's team due to lack of coordination even though they are quite OP. Story telling by author is good, though a bit rushed. MC as usual becomes OP too quickly, though the story balance out by giving him even OP-er opponents.

Quick question, who the heck states that it will end at C801 when the author is still stuck at C602?!?!?!?

To read this novel you'll have to be willing to give up some time, it is slow. There's no denying that. The author can use up a whole chapter on a discussion or an explanation and he does it often, so be prepared or don't read it.

For me it feels like he's (the author) trying to lenghten the chapter for monetary gains, because characters will usually repeat things in a chapter for no apparent reason.

Now I'll tell you the good things about this novel. The world building and plot are... more>> probably the best on site, it is done so well you'll be able to draw a vivid picture of the environment in your head as you read.

Characters are fleshed out and almost none conform to a template, excepting the big breasted loli (find it in your heart or chest to forgive her).

Fights are really well written, so if your an action guy like me you'll probably enjoy them.

For me this is a solid 4.5 (would've been a 5) and that's only because the MCs starting to believe in that survival of the fittest bullshit. I hate that mindset so much, but I can somewhat tolerate it given his status as guild leader though this does show me why I prefer lone characters, they usually have their own sense of morals.

Anyway 4.5. A very good story.

Edit: 97 chapters required to get to the good stuff. <<less

A word of warning this novel will not be for everyone. The MC is very weak at the beginning and his growth in strength is very slow. If you do not like weak protagonists I recommend that you stay away from this novel, while he does get strong it takes a long time.

I was blown away by this novel. Going into it, seeing the 4.0 rating I didn't exactly have high expectations. However I was pleasantly surprised. As some other reviews have already stated, the novel only gets better and... more>> better. Opposite of many other Chinese novels that start to grow stale repeating the same thing over and over again, this novel is both inventive and imaginative.

The Main Character is weak. Because of this, the majority of the novel he has to use his wits and brain to use what limited ability he has to defeat significantly stronger opponents. He also has allies who help him out, and many of the side characters are actually very important and helpful.

Another thing is that the bad guys are not united and many times they will even fight among each other. One memorable scene was when an powerful enemy showed up and it looked like he would be the main villain for the arc but suddenly the tables are turned on everyone (including the MC) as a third enemy springs a trap that they had set.

The synopsis above makes the tone of this story feel incredibly light, and many people going in may have been fooled by this. However the story itself is actually very intense and dark. At times it even feels incredibly hopeless as it expands upon the implications of the MC being an NPC and the world being just a game. But so far even at chapter 329 many questions about the setting are unanswered it keeps me guessing as many things I had thought were established facts get overturned with each new arc.

Finally the setting is well thought out. I can say with a fact that out of all Chinese novels this one probably has the least plot holes. Everything is connected and things that might feel like a plot hole at first are explained and expanded upon later. In fact both the plot holes raised in TerraEarth's review are actually addressed later on in the novel.

Overall I greatly enjoyed this novel. I would recommend it to most people. The beginning is a bit weak, but I would highly recommend people stick to it at least until the end of the second arc which is around chapter 80ish. <<less

It was refreshing reading this novel.

The world building was very well done, the MC basically becomes a virus inside a simulation due to a freak accident where a player was killed before they spawned. And then he finds out that the world is even more dangerous... and mysterious than his previous attitude.

The writing and pacing is decent; the plot is not recycled like the others you may find on this site - 4.5 in comparison to what I've read.

So first of all let me say shame on all the other reviewers who didn't give this a 4.5 or 5 star. You will see a lot of 2-3 star reviews on this novel which brings the grade down, but all those guys have complaints that were answered later on, like one dude was complaining how one person lost her memory after the dungeon is done, well that was explained if only he bothered to read the next couple of chapters. Anyway, GOR for me has the most misleading introduction... more>> here in novel updates. If you read it especially the bottom part you'll think the novel has a lot of slapstick like in the experimental log of the crazy lich, where the MC would say or do dumb things and the rest of characters would face palm. But upon the latest release (ie chap 275 right now) I haven't any of that type of mood at all. There's some comedy here but the novel is leaning more towards action, suspense and even a bit of tragedy. The MC and his friends just found out their entire life was a lie and they need to periodically go through dangerous situations just to survive. Unlike what happens in Japanese anime, that sort of stuff will quickly suck the comedy out of your life and turn you very serious quickly, so no, I've never read of the MC doing dumb stuff here, in fact he is extremely resourceful, quick on his feet, and does a lot of research before he enters the dungeon. Apart from the general tone of the novel, a lot of the stuff in the description don't really happen in the story. Maybe it happens later on but the "Player Thwarting Alliance" is not mentioned in the novel at all, the MC inherited a guild but the name is something that's normal. Also, there are lot of NPC guilds already existing, and majority of them are fighting with the players so I don't know why the intro makes it seem like the MC is creating the first ever guild that is created to oppose players. So yeah, if the description didn't appeal to you, please disregard that and give the novel a shot. Although I didn't like the pace of the novel at the start due to how everything wasn't properly explained in the beginning, if you stick it with it will become very good by the middle of the first act onwards. The author does a great job of creating memorable characters and these characters aren't the "flavor of the month" types you see in typical Chinese novels where the MC will interact with them for a bit and then leave them to go to a higher level or whatever. These characters stay with the MC for multiple arcs and it amazing how the author ties everyone together. I highly recommend this novel, try it you won't regret it. <<less

This novel is very creative. Its hard to get bored when you find a lot of twisted line in the middle of thrilling scene. Unlike Terror Infinity where we get all the action and tragedy. Here, we get +1 comedy. I imagine the story is more similar to matrix rather than a game world.

Honestly the idea is without doubt first rate, our world (us readers) is but a beta game (knew it) where otherworlders developers and testers are working out the bugs before it all resets. But unfortunate mishap for the otherworlders a bug beyond the control of god sets some of npcs who where meant to die on the path to becoming world saviors from the otherworlders.

The story concept is mind bending, but some of the other elements or lack luster in comparsion, though not bad they aren't great. The primary and... more>> secondary characters are above average with behaviors and motivations that don't bend toward plot, but the dialogue is mostly bland with distinct flavors besides vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. Still is honestly an alright read of 7/10 <<less

Read up to ch.50

It's a nice one. While there are some problem; author breaking the fourth wall and some inconsistency in the system logic, it doesn't bugs me too much. The idea behind it is pretty fresh and I like the character. All side character that has been introduced so far has enough screen time and feels like they will continue to hold some role in the story, which is a good thing. One thing to be noted is, while story does use a lot of game terminology, the story... more>> it self is doesn't fall into MMORPG/ virtual game category. <<less

Uhm, im almost completely forgot this novel and some of these day it was already absorbed by WW.

Well story wise, this was absolutely not a VRMMO story like you will imagine. The character and etc need sometime to be build up or you can say developed. (Welp, you can’t expect they are ‘developed’ in just 20 chap or so after reading)

If you want something fresh out of ordinary Xianxia, this is for you. Translator wise, it was good, well you guys should know he was the original translator of... more>> JunMoxie. Well then again, everyone have its own preference. Toast and uh I mean no offense. <<less

Impressions as of Ch.19.

The description above is quite vague and I would understand why a reader would be reluctant to start reading the novel. But if you're looking for something that is different, this would be it.

Gate of Apocalypse tells the story of Chen Xiaolian, a young but established Chinese web-novelist. During his flight home from South East Asia (possibly Singapore), his plane suddenly lost power and crashed. He woke up to find himself with two other survivors on a mysterious island. A frightening encounter later, he discovered a strange... more>> metallic sphere and was suddenly imbued with game-like statistics and equipment. But before he can truly understand what is happening, he has to clear a fast approaching danger first...

This isn't a VRMMO story, or a transmigration story.

Spoilers (for underlying plot premise) :
Spoiler

The human characters are treated as avatars/vessels for 'players' to take control of. These 'players' essentially took over the bodies of the flight passengers and treat everything as a game, including getting points, items and a leveling system. The normal humans who weren't taken over by players are treated as nothing more as NPCs.

[collapse]

It reminds me of the manga 'Gantz', the films 'Body Snatchers' and 'Gamer'.

The translation is great and includes footnotes to explain the Chinese idioms and abbreviations. The prose itself is well done with a mixture of comedic thoughts from the MC and dramatic action scenes, though the MC's mannerisms might be exaggerated to some readers.

Very interesting, will read more. <<less

After binge reading this novel, I must say it has some interesting ideas and concept. Each arc is pretty interesting and adds to the plot (except the Africa one, which I dislike.) MC is not super OP and is not able to "carry" his team through each instance.

Another thing I dislike about this novel is the long drag before the MC is finally successfully able to get back his lover.

Great read, thoroughly enjoyable.

I will admit, I tried to read this a few times before and didn't get beyond the 10th chapter before stopping. It just bored me to be honest.

But given the reviews and the fact that I have found the beginning of a lot of pretty good translated novels to be sub-par I kept giving it another go.

... more>> And I am very glad I did after 30-40 chapters I was hooked. I binge read it in 3 days and can't wait for more releases.

If you enjoy rpg elements and stories like Arena, Terror infinity, etc you will really enjoy this. The plot contains those rpg type elements yet is also unique. There is a pretty good over-arching plot that provides plenty of mystery and suspense aside from the almost episodic instances (will understand when you read :D). And what makes it of better quality than a lot of the translated novels is the good characterization; not just of the MC but also the supporting cast.

A great read and one I definitely recommend. Enjoy :D <<less

My favorite novel of all the novels out there. The novel pushed me to start writing stories. From the start up to now, it was enjoyable. I read it everytime there was an update. Good foreshadowing. Even if you knew something is about to happen, its really hard to predict. The best story.

Unique story too. As the blurb stated above, the MC was an NPC, a really interesting move. It was a jam-packed story. I'm really amazed by how much genre contained. Humor, action, tragedy, harem, romance, fantasy, adventure, sci-fi,... more>> many more to elaborate. It doesn't felt forced too. If you love pets and gundams, then read this.

For me its 10/5. <<less

Story: Well its general premise is not something new, especially if it a certain Game Element is present, it acts like a guideline of sorts. Some things you've definitely have seen before. But what makes this interesting is the way this element is presented and how the setting is used. Its unique and intriguing without a doubt, without any spoilers I can only say the author really made something outstanding. It's something worth reading since it treads a different path compare to the general stories you would read in general... more>> or from this genre.

Characters (MC) : He isn't a good one nor a bad one. Even though I'm over 100 something chapters in, you still can't get a sense of this guy. A little bit you understand who he is but not why he is the way he is (not much on backstory). So there are still somethings to flush out. The fact that he is kind, courageous in situations, a critical thinker for me are artificial qualities of him in the story. You see him exhibit those because he is the MC, he is suppose to drive the story through. I can't say I don't like him because he has typical qualities of the hero of the story. He is something unique, not like the others, there were only somethings he can do in those dangerous situations. But I can't say I like him for almost the same reasons, he is unique only in the sense of the story not an objective opinion for the readers like me. It's not so much his problem though but more because of his character development.

Character Development: The one thing I want to talk about the most! It sooooo sloooow, and I'm not exaggerating. This MC went through so much so far in this 140 chapters and I felt like he barely grew as a character. His a actions has no reason or cause, he protects Soo Soo because she was a kid which makes you think he is a good person with morals. You accept that at first but later you hope you can find out how he learned those morals. You get a tiny glimpse of his background so still alot of room to fill so you can't understand his base character yet from the ground up. He's now in his 3rd "Instance Dungeron" (you'll know once you read) and this has been the single most large event which is BEGINNING to develop his character. Of course it is my opinion but you'll notice it rather quickly. In the last 2 instance dungeon before it, think of it like 2 do or die situations for him....I get nothing, its the same events happening with different characters for that even happening in the same sequence. Arrival, meeting with other characters, MC critical thinking to solve puzzle, Dangerous situation, MC selflessness, and Soo Soo saves the day. Wtf? I felt like he hasn't had time at all, or the author made him not have time to reflect on the things that happened to him, plan ahead, etc. It sort of made sense since he is 18 but as the MC and driving force of the story, you would like him to grow. He does, I'm finally seeing it now but just slow.

Summary: Honestly I can talk about this the whole day but generally it's good for its unique setting and overall presentation of its story, executed well. Its a slow read in terms of how character develops, if its slow for the MC you can only imagine for the Support cast. The leveling and whole system for the characters aren't too important because the MC is weak as hell. You don't get to see a comeback situation when the MC is at a disadvantage, others usually save his ass and others support him. Its only good for those who like that sort of thing, my personally preference of a one man army isn't here but it doesn't take away from the story. After all its suppose to be like that and you kind of get why, the author uses the theme of teamwork and unity a lot. There's so much more and its definitely worth a read but I caution you because it takes a while for this story's main dish which is even in the synopsis, the creation and STABILITY of the "Guild for NPC" to arrive. I say that because man does him team suck, overall and individually. The only thing driving me is to see it come together and the overall premise. <<less

I love this novel, because it's different from other novel I read before like ATG, TDG, ED, HJC, TNH, TNE. At other novel you will see OP, brilliant, smart, dominant MC while other character not stand out and the villain look s*upid, easy to kill. Other than that the plot always reincarnator or transmigrator who know everything.

But here at GoR novel you will see different or new plot (i think it's like matrix, but it's different), story pace is very slow so at first 100 you will only see introduction... more>> of MC (not OP at all) and mysterious plot (instance dungeon & player). And then at chapter 200 - 500 you will see growth of a strong main character, growth of side character, very interesting plot because MC still looking for them (upper plane & team development). <<less

Excellent idea for the story, the author really thought a lot regarding the plot and the starting characters. Sadly like most novels, it doesn't stay consistent.

The first dungeon instance was really interesting, the characters interactions, the schemes, the descriptions, everything was really excellent. Then, things took a turn for the worse, the following dungeon instances became less and less interesting with a MC who takes crappy decisions yet has the plot armor as such he always ends up victorious.

I believe the author is really good at world building, making us... more>> readers immerse in the story, but at the same time he lacks something regarding characters construction and plot building.

At the same time, I'm not fond of the whole history context, the author describe thoroughly the background story of each instance but it quickly fills the chapters with unecessary informations, that's probably what's making me dislike the story starting from chapter ~130 <<less

The Gate of Revelation isn't just any "reverse Terror Infinity light novel". It just may be the most entertaining and modern theosophy text you may find. It doesn't force you to accept anything of faith, too. You get accustomed to the computer cosmogony ideas in the most natural way.

Well, GOR still has these usual SF&F "ecology troubles". I'll try the "spoiler" tag for 'em, as the topic may actually contain spoilers and probably won't be too interesting for the general public too.

Spoiler

1. "I hear the biggest guild have a member count nearing a thousand"
It looks like the really grave case of simple (if you have just a little math background) miscalculation.

a) The guild have to use it's EVERY SINGLE member in some third of it's missions at least (every one may pass just a couple of the guild's mission in raw, right?).
b) The guild's don't seem to be bringing hundreeds of members to any dungeon.
c) The numbers of Awaken ones and their guilds aren't all that big. Otherwise, we may see these 300 and more strong parties around, but rarely. But as the guild count isn't too big, we should see these large guild's hordes in almost every hard dungeon. Strong guilds are the ones that would get these invitation, after all. And forming small parties is an impossible policy, that would wipe 'em before they make to their fourth dungeon as a guild.

2. General extinction bug :)
An average dungeon may give us a couple Awaken at most. Great. The problem is, it may kill tens to hundreeds of these Awaken! It looks like the sure case of immenent Awaken extinction.

On the other hand, Terror Infinity brings some 5 to 10 newbies to every event on awerage and brings about the same number of member's deaths. The rare case of working ecology SF&F world.
