As the grandmaster of demonic cultivation, Wei Wuxian roamed the world, hated by millions for committing acts of necromancy. Overthrown by the powerful clans he had attempted to subjugate, Wei Wuxian is supposedly killed by his shidi in order to save the cultivation world.

Restored to life in the body of Mo Xuanyu, the local cut-sleeve lunatic, in order to exact revenge on his abusive relatives, Wei Wuxian quickly finds himself spiralling back into his old life when he’s taken away by the cold-hearted, stern, and ultimately quite boring Lan Wangji – who might be harbouring warmer feelings than contempt. Perhaps of the…romantic kind?

But despite his new beginning, Wei Wuxian begins to unravel a decade and a half long mystery that is set to undo the very fabric of the cultivation world as they know it.

A mysterious, action-packed thriller of a ride, this is a journey you won’t want to miss!

I came for BL but stayed for the plot and completely fell in love with the characters (not just the main characters). Im not good at writing reviews but I recommend this 11/10 to everyone. Trust me, you can finish this in quarantine so don't go skimming through the chapters because this is totally worth the read. Btw for someone who's saying this overrated in the comments, you spelled masterpiece wrong.

This was the first novel I read, I really considered for a time my favorite, and then I just realized that it was just hype? I'm not trying to be mean but I feel like sometimes is kind of boring the interactions between the main charecters I feel like they don't get a lot of screen and the novel just focus to much on the plot and other characters without a balance (like her other work Heaven Official's Blessing) , which is fine but not really what I like

My review is a little biased because it encompasses my feelings from watching The Untamed on Netflix. So I watched The Untamed on Netflix first, and then read the novel after. After the novel, I started reading the manhua. The anime version didn’t seem as appealing so I opted out of that.

What I liked about the story in TFoD there were different layers to it. There is action, fantasy, mystery, and romance. I like smut as well, and towards the end and in the extras, there is smut, but it’s... more>> not PWP (plot what plot?) smut.

In terms of the characters, I really liked the MC’s positive yet pragmatic character. He’s not rigid in his beliefs. He’s got that right mix of mischievous with cheer.

For the ML, I liked that he was a righteous character, and there’s something very appealing about having a very black and white righteous must uphold the justice and good type character soften for the MC. Even with his righteous, he always considers the MC’s best interests at heart. In smut related matters, he never forces the MC. He is my favorite ML to date. Loves the MC, doesn’t force him, is a good guy over all, strong physically and mentally, gets along with other people.

TFoD was my first foray into Danmei and Chinese BL. I have read quite a few since then, and TFoD is still my favorite to date. I haven’t found anything that hits the spot quite as well overall as TFoD does in terms story, smut fulfillment, and emotional fulfillment.

In the extras, there is some fantasy/s*x dream related content that people may consider r*pe. I don’t consider it r*pe because it was a dream and stemmed from the MC’s and ML’s fetish. Some couples in real life engage in consensual fantasy play or use toys as such. As long as both parties are willing it’s fine. However, some people might be squirmish still. If you are, I would avoid the incense extra chapters.

I do wish there were more extras with some of the other characters, and it leaves a little feeling of longing to see relationships repaired or mended, but you can’t have everything. Definitely recommend~! <<less

Incredible novel, the story was captivating, the characters, main and side ones were beautifully written, each with their own story and reasons. The main couple was adorable, making readers feel both intense pain one time and wholesomeness at another. I only rather disliked scenes like the infamous incense burner, but besides that it's absolutely flawless.

Love this novel. I discovered this novel when I was watching the untamed. After reading this, I was completely hooked with web novel!

The story is very interesting. It made you realize that everything is just "a matter of opinions". How you see things. There is no absolute right or wrong.

For those who are not interest in BL, you can just skipped them and still a good read.

i love the extras a lot too. Especially the last chapter. Too sweet!

It will always be my favorite Bl story, still was so painfull but necessary for both; otherwise they would've been able to understand their feelings for each other and go against the entire world.

Spoiler

I'm still asking myself what came to the authors mind on those extras. The are totally awesome ?, but would've never guessed they were actually doing it. The fact that this book was already perfectly made without the extras. And on top of that, fulfilling my fugoshi heart was the biggest and very welcome surprised.

I finished reading this novel along with the day the last translated chapter was updated, but only found out that I can write a review about it in this site haha. Still I must say, even after alot of months have passed after reading it, the feelings of awe and amazement didn't change. To the point where I can still imagine vividly the most memorable moments from the story.

This novel is considered a most-highly recommended one, and I am one of those people asserting this, cuz in fact, it's recognition... more>> is not overrated at all. It's the most jam-packed written plot I've ever encountered and read, and the most number of genres tackled in one story. It's that type of novel where it makes you want to share to anyone, because it's that good. It's something that non-bl readers can still enjoy reading cuz the plot is so much beyond that (needless to say, even if you're not a bl fan, this story and the characters will eventually open your mind somehow lol)

Fact is, this is the very 1st chinese novel I've read, and I didn't have any expectations, but because of that I was completely blown away with the existence of this story. The best emotional roller-coaster ride I've ever experienced, and one of the few stories where I am most emotionally invested on. If you are already convinced up to here, then you must start reading as soon as possible. If not, then continue below.

Some main points:

1. If you are a sucker for bl historical genre, then this might be your novel 'soulmate'. I've been searching for the genre since a few years back, and I always get frustrated because there's not alot of novels/stories before. If there is, the trans mostly are discontinued or in hiatus and you'd not want to start reading a novel that will give you agony while waiting if the next chapter will ever drop. For new readers, you won't even have that problem now since it's completed.

2. If you are into some deep character developments, and sidestories of other characters, then this novel also fits you. The MC's own character progression is already more than enough to suck you in, but you'd also find yourself getting attached to the sidecharacters that fit your personality. Overall, the story mainly focuses on the characters themselves.

3. Although #2 is true, it doesn't cancel the fact that the whole plot is still mind-blowing. Both usual and unexpected twists, that will keep the reader satisfied yet also curious. Basically, it has a very meaty and juicy plot content xD also, contrary to what alot of readers are saying about the flashbacks, for me, its a very crucial point for understanding the characters even more and serves as an important factor to follow the plot well. Also, I think it's a pretty interesting take on where flashbacks are placed and how it must be narrated because of its 'unusualness' for readers, it adds for the overall awe-inducing impact for me. 4. From the tags of this novel from this site, you will alreadyvhave an idea how the story is composed of a variety of genres, no need to mention specifically. But this fact must be reiterated in that the genres involved aren't just there for the sake of making alot of tags, but each genre is given its time to shine, meaning, the complete vibe and feels is there as if you are reading that sole genre only. And that, with the fact that it has several contrasting ones such as horror, comedy, romance, action, mystery, angst, etc. This is a major factor to the fullness of its plot.

5. Details is a common factor that picky readers usually look for and this story is never one to disappoint you. The amount of it is just absurd, to the point where you'd actually want to list them so you won't forget anything because most of these details are important to the plot's development, or a potential side-story, or double/hidden/deep meanings that add to the beauty of the story's flow, and even just some very nice and interesting information to know. You'd be surprised that you remembered one detail passively and realize in the following chapters that it is indeed relevant. So it's one of the main reasons why as a reader u are compelled to not skip even one sentence after you realize this fact.

6. The flow of words may not be as neat and smooth sometimes, maybe due to the difficulty in translating some chinese terms into english accurately. Still, the composition is beautiful, impactful, and at the same time, close to the readers' hearts. There are alot of chinese idioms and sayings for literary readers, yet still have a light flow that you will be able to enjoy.

7. It's a given I guess that it will leave you emotionally attached that this novel will always have a place in your heart that no other novel can replace after you've finished it. It will give you nostalgia from time to time whenever you remember it. Midnight tears of laughter, joy and pain is the basic. Goosebumps-inducing and heart-clenching moments are possible too. All kinds of emotions will be ripped out unknowingly from you. An emotiinally worth-it read, simple as that.

There's a reason why alot of people are loving this novel, many kinds of readers having the same sentiments and thoughts for the story. So I hope alot more people can read it and enjoy the memory of reading it with us :)) <<less

A super fun novel with an amazing MC who is intelligent and strong. ML is perfectly suited to MC and the interactions between the two are interesting. All the other characters are also written well, so many cute characters who are multi dimensional. My first BL translated novel. The plot revolves around the past and present, before the MC reincarnates and after. The present involves the MC getting involved with the ML to investigate a dead body and through the investigation their past and present are shown and the links... more>> are presented. I don't want to spoil anything but this novel is so good, I read it a while ago and to this day I'm still reading fanfics and looking at fan art going awww my babies. The extras at the ending of the story is so good, just hurry and go read the novel. <<less

seems like most of the low ratings come from how confusing the story is. Personally, I think it was fairly clear especially as different aspects of the story starts to unfold through the flashbacks, which I found to be quite skillfully used by the author.

my main issues with the story though is the MC and the romance.

Spoiler

1. MC is very likable and easy going so it's not really about the character itself, rather it's how the author first makes him look like a really bad guy and then adding a bunch of heroic backstories to make readers pity him. Obviously a lot of authors do this but I found it a bit too excessive which also resulted in the plotline becoming quite predictable over time. The "wow I'm so chill and witty but I'm actually really strong and have a sad past" kind of character is just really overused and makes me cringe sometimes. The ML's character is really boring to me tbh. His silent/righteous personality could've been handled better without becoming bland so I blame the author for that (also sometimes I feel like he gets a bit OOC._.). All the villains are also quite similar--anti-villains who with sad backstories who were somewhat wronged or left behind regrets.

[collapse]

So how do I put this... it's not that the characters are written badly but... it's just quite superficial imo. That becomes really clear after you've read a good amount of manga/manhwa. p.s. after reading this I went to read Scum Villain (by the same author) and found the character troupes to be extremely similar, with a anti-hero kinda feel with the main character (albeit she wrote scum villain before FoD).

Spoiler

2. So I'd guess this is really subjective but I just felt like the romance was a bit strained? The ML is cool and all but I just don't feel the chemistry between him and the MC. It's literally always just him getting drunk and revealing a bit of his feelings while the MC kind of gets shy?? But then nothing happens until suddenly a bunch of feelings burst out of nowhere at the ending (which I felt was rushed and quite confusing) ? Also in flashbacks of the past I didn't understand how ML fell in love with MC despite how he was so annoying. Like it just feels like the romantic development is not fleshed out enough. Basically kinda like 85% plot 15% romance. That's not counting the extras cuz they were mostly either boring extras or really repetitive smut scenes/couple moments.

[collapse]

Lol so yeah maybe this point seems unnecessary for this review since I may as well just go read full on romance but it could still serve as a warning for people who came looking for good chemistry and development in terms of romance.

But the story did always managed to keep me on the edge of the seat and I would still recommend this if you prefer fast paced romance over in depth falling-in-love stuff. <<less

Honestly, there’s a little bit of everything in this novel. Mystery, action, comedy, all of it. In the beginning this novel’s wide array of characters made it a little confusing to read, but as you get further into the novel, each character becomes memorable and unique. Moreover, the reason behind the current state of things is slowly explained through flashbacks, all of which are very well paced. Give this a read, it’s one of the best books I’ve read on NU.

I'm just writing this in response to the point of the reviewer below me. I love this novel, it's one of my favorite pieces of literature across any media, and I don't want people to get the wrong idea about it, considering that first review currently implies something that I think doesn't apply.

Please don't use the phrase "dub con" to refer to this novel, and especially not to chapter 95, which is one of my favorites. It cheapens the whole experience. During the entire novel we have establish the feelings... more>> of the seme very clearly, and by chapter 95, it's pretty much written in stone how he feels. We have also established that the seme uses the time when he is drunk to actually express his real feelings and to act upon the desires he otherwise suppresses. Chapter 95 is an important milestone in their relationship, when the seme finally lets loose and moves their relationship forward. And it was due to his partner's provocation and with his partner's absolute consent. Please don't call it dub con just because he was drunk. During the entire novel, it has been clear that the only thing keeping the seme from revealing his feelings is his certainty that these feelings are not reciprocated. There is no confusion or hesitancy about how he feels. There is no mistake about what he wants. Their progression on this chapter is beautiful and moving and the result of thousands of words of buildup and story. Don't liken it to two guys doing it when one of them doesn't really know whether he likes it or not. <<less

“Tens of thousands of words were left unspoken, in exchange for endless laughter and hugs.”

You know that feeling when you've read something so great, that nothing else will ever compare to that experience? That's exactly how I'm feeling right now. To me, this book was everything. It's not perfect, but somehow that just makes me love it even more.

The story was immediately engaging and immersive, dropping you right into the thick of it. You slowly have to learn the ins and outs of this world of cultivation, and how all... more>> of these different characters fit into it. I feel that these were some of the most realistic characters that I've seen in awhile. No one felt like some cheap two dimensional piece of paper. Even the villains had moments where I wept for them, and that's not an easy thing to accomplish. I especially adored our two main leads, who were never quite what they seemed. The romance was the best part though, it was filled with sorrow and beauty, and it will always be my favorite. <<less

Simply amazing. I first read it till about 1/4 then decided to wait for it to be completely translated because it was too good of a story and all the details are so touching and poignant, I didn’t want to forget them as I read bit by bit.

This is definitely an outstanding book. I love bl to death, but even without the bl elements the story that this book tells is really beautiful and heart wrenching and funny and heart warming, it’s the whole package.

A big thank you to the... more>> translator, K, and Addis and the rest of ExR for the editing and proofreading. The translation reads beautifully, the vocabulary, the structuring of sentences, it was such a joy to read. <<less

Finishing this was so bittersweet. I got drawn into bl books because of the manga translation of this story, and the realization that the (well translated) story version was even more enjoyable and rich than the manga. This was the story that made me realize that fan translated novels can actually be readable. This was also the first novel that I read while it was still not completely translated. Originally, I was very worried the translators would never finish, but now I just can't imagine it has been completed.

Honestly, the... more>> story is pretty rich, but the multimedia around it is what really makes it shine (the manga, the anime, the live action). All these different interpretations of the story brings a rich analysis of the different characters and motivations, which really adds to the complexity and my understanding of the complexity of the story.

I love how the original story is almost a commentary on the dangers of absolute power, and the need for everyone to care and speak up when they see injustice. I'm honestly a bit surprised that a story with this moral was allowed to be so popular in China. This might explain why the live action downplays the corrupting influence of power and focuses on portraying groups of people as either good or evil. <<less

I want to rate it to 5 stars but the ignorant me suddenly cl**ked carelessly and gave it a 4. Anyways just want to say that I really love this novel. Amongst the danmei novels I have read since I became a fujoshi this one is truly unforgettable. The story takes up the persons emotion to a roller coaster. One time it'll be funny, then next you'll be sad because of the backstory then you'll go mushy mushy because of the interaction between WeiLan and it's soooooo what do... more>> you call this? Heart warming. Overall the characters are incredibly well made. They aren't just 2d but they have their own set of backgrounds and reasons. I really love novels like this one but so far the authors other 2 works are not yet done being translated but I'm also looking forward to it especially HOB. ??????? <<less

I cannot fully express how much I adore this novel. The flow of story which alternates past and future is a really nice spice, gets one hooked up since flashbacks explains a lot how present mysteries came about. You'll cry, laugh and giggle.

Such shameless but cute Wei Wuxian and the adorable Lan Wangji. It's a slow romance, feelings are fostered slowly but you'll love how it turns out in the end!!!

The characters, each have their own roles to play and none is left out.

Purely amazing.

Some people are hesitant to read this because it's BL. Well, I absolutely hate zombies. First, I'm extremely squeamish - even the mildest descriptions of rotting flesh can completely ruin my enjoyment of the novel. Second, I am very scared of all dark supernatural creatures. Even vampires and werewolves beloved by teenage girls are too terrifying for me. So, when it comes to zombies, both fear and disgust are enormous. And, as I was reading, some scenes left me too disturbed to eat or sleep for many hours.
But despite... more>> that, I couldn't stop reading. It was simply too interesting. I even feel that reading it once and watching donghua was not enough. I will read it again, as soon as I mentally prepare myself for the zombies. <<less
