As the grandmaster of demonic cultivation, Wei Wuxian roamed the world, hated by millions for committing acts of necromancy. Overthrown by the powerful clans he had attempted to subjugate, Wei Wuxian is supposedly killed by his shidi in order to save the cultivation world.

Restored to life in the body of Mo Xuanyu, the local cut-sleeve lunatic, in order to exact revenge on his abusive relatives, Wei Wuxian quickly finds himself spiralling back into his old life when he’s taken away by the cold-hearted, stern, and ultimately quite boring Lan Wangji – who might be harbouring warmer feelings than contempt. Perhaps of the…romantic kind?

But despite his new beginning, Wei Wuxian begins to unravel a decade and a half long mystery that is set to undo the very fabric of the cultivation world as they know it.

A mysterious, action-packed thriller of a ride, this is a journey you won’t want to miss!

Incredible world-building. Lovable, believable characters. Thick, interesting plot full of unexpected plot twists. Slow burning romance that grips your heart early on and never lets go. Humour and adventure and heartbreak and mysteries and betrayal and honour and and and... what a brilliant, brilliant, novel!! (I don't know how I will ever love another character as much as I love Lan WangJi T_T)

This is literally a masterpiece.

It's made me smile, laugh, and cry my heart out.

The characters make you fall in love with each and every one of them, for a multitude of reasons. For most of the villains, you can't even hate them and you'll end up loving at least a few of them too. The plot is a story full of wonder, and I'm having a hard time finding anything as good now that I've read MDZS.

The romance is amazing as well, it just kind of makes your heart... more>> melt. It takes a while, but now that they're together they won't ever be seperated. They love each other so much and it shows.

My review doesn't hold a candle to the actual novel, just read it. <<less

This was my very first danmei novel. It is also the reason as to why I started liking BL novels. Since I was fairly new to the genre and was not a fan of BL, I really enjoyed the focus on the plot. Scenes between the main pairing are not excessive so it's much more enjoyable and leaves you asking for more. After this, I unconsciously started to compare other BL novels and was dissatisfied since there were very few that were on par with MDZS.

The thing that got me... more>> hooked was the characters. While I was looking for other novels, I craved badly for the "shameless, seemingly carefree" uke and "cold on the outside, warm on the inside" gong dynamic. I found other stories bland and unsuited for my tastes. It goes to show just how deep this novel imprinted on me. This novel also nudged me into liking cultivation stories.

In conclusion, if you haven't read it, you're missing out a lot.

Also, check out the author's other works. I'm worshipping MXTX at the moment. I'm currently addicted to TGCF. I'm a sucker for tragedy. The angst just tugs on my heartstrings. MXTX' works are turning me into a willing masochist.

Why are you still here? Go ahead and read the damn novelー <<less

Loved this so much and would absolutely recommend!

The author did a fantastic job of the character development because we can’t to see so many aspects of all the different characters and not just the main. It might get kinda confusing sometimes because there’s a lot of different titles for the same person but it allows for a very subtle character development as well.

The flashbacks were super interesting but a little draggy at points. But the main couple is cute beyond belief and unlike typical bl, not every single couple is... more>> gay. Which is fantastic. It really brings out different elements and sticks to the premise established which I love. <<less

It’s not a bad novel. In fact, I really liked it. There’s just one thing that made me lose interest. There are plenty of flashbacks/backstories. It isn’t necessarily bad. In fact, it is a good thing on some books. But if you use it to frequently, people just get tired of going back and forth. All I wanted to know was what happened next. But the constant moving isn’t for me.

God, this is just GOOD.

the characters, plot, dialogue; are great.

but for some events, I think it's better for the author to explain it in more; it's quite vague actually.

I usually write long comments and review, when it comes to stories, fanfics, mangas, animes etc that I love. But I really don't know what to write. This novel I really different from other reincarnation stories.

If there is anything I hate in novel or magas then that would be flashback. I find that in a lot of novel or mangas their are not needed. But in this novel I had to say that my favourite parts were the flashbacks. Sense the flashbacks tell stories of when they were still young,... more>> you get to uncover the MC's past, for example: How did the MC die? Why did he die? What happened exactly? Why was he revived? How does he know the ML? and so on... Even if we already some-what knew, who killed the MC, all the thing aren't really what they may seem. It's different from those xianxia novel, set in the cultivational world, where the MC reincarnates with strong powers and with ton of good luck and tries to become the man at the top of the world. In this story the MC already was at the top but ended up being killed and then he is revived. He doesn't try getting back to the top and doesn't seek revenge. Instead he uncovers truths, tries to mend relationships.

As for characters, I love practically all of them. From the main character, to the main lover, to the big bad guys. Actually if I have to say, I often end up only loving the MC and the ML or FL in stories, every other character for me is always an extra or isn't important, But this is one of the many novels, where other then loving the MC and ML or FL, I also love most of the characters. The MC or by name, Wei WuXian isn't a typical yaoi uke. He is hilariously shameless, independent, and strong enough to protect himself and his seme which makes it a power-balanced relationship. The seme or also known as Lan Wangji is more of a distant, cool type. I find everything about these two, just so cute (UWU). The way they interact with each other, sometime makes me tear up.

Okay, actually this review is long, but not as long as I usually make them. I there something I didn't say? Yes, there's lot of things I didn't say or review, but the thing is if I were to write more I would end up spoiling most of the story or the whole story. It's hard to give a review whiteout mentioning or spoiling at least some parts of the story. <<less

Well, I must say I'm completely hooked and honestly can't get over my obsession with this novel, my heart cannot handle how much I love this story and the characters and this isn't a story where its like I only love the main character or two. I love everyone so much and I fangirl over them so much.

There may be some minor spoilers in this, so if you haven't read till 84, I suggest not reading this.

So I'm generally someone who is more interested in the actual plot and story... more>> rather than the romance, but I must say, I absolutely love the romance and WWX and Lan Zhan are meant to be!!!!!!!!

Anyways, back to the plot, it's probably one of the better ones I have read and it wasn't as confusing as other things were (this might be because I watched the donghua before reading the novel, so the donghua gave me a sense of characters and setting).

Also, it's not just the plot but the characters that are fantastic. One of the things I love the most is the relationship between WWX and the disciples, and it's adorable how they flock towards him. I love how the story really represents the difference between generations and how the disciples aren't scared of WWX and instead kind of warmed up to him. I have to say, Lan SiZhui and Jin Ling make my heart hurt because I want to see how their relationship (as in brotherly/fatherly love not as in ship way) develops throughout the story. Also, the characters are constant and don't have any weird fluctuations in their character and the only changes they have are gradual and happen for a reason which are a win-win to me.

The plot in this story is something that always keeps me on my toes and the author did a really good job of grabbing your attention, and oh god FLASHBACKS. Don't get me started on those. Sometimes they were hard to get into since I wanted to know what was going on in the present, but once I got into them, I got INTO them. They were amazing and everything fell into place. (The most recent flashback made me cry so much when it showed the reader why WWX became hated and how he changed, and omg A Yuan, my loooooooooove)

I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who likes shounen ai and cultivation novels, and it's probably on my favorites list.

The only bad thing about this is that now I'm addicted and will never be able to live normally again :))))))))) <<less

This novel is my favorite. All of the characters all so well written that even if you want to hate one character you can't when you find out their past.

I love this author, she writes so many captivating stories (Ex:Heaven Official’s Blessing and The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System which are so worth the reading too). This novel is everything you never known you needed to read till you've read it.

I love how Wei Ying confesses to Lan Zhan even through the moment wasn't perfect but that is what makes this couple so special. The way they interact with each other even before they got together is so exciting to read. When they got married I was so happy because after all the suffering these two where put through they deserved each other and their happy ending.

The past in this novel is full of angst, with the way Wei Ying suffered before he died and how Lan Zhan played inquiry through the 13 years of waiting for Wei Ying to come back even through he didn't even know if Wei Ying will come back is so sad. And the characters that are the antagonists of the novel like Jin Guangyao and Xue Yang you can't hate them even after all the terrible things they have done because of their past, you will even feel sympathy and pity for them.

One word to describe this story.

Beautiful.

Yes, it's filled with flashbacks and I, for certain do not like flashbacks yet these is what builds the story and generates emotions! Sure, sometimes I do feel that the story is slow due to all the flashbacks but it gives us a clear glimpse of Wei Ying's past (which is really heartbreaking) & also a deeper understanding of the plot.

Furthermore, the author of this book is amazing. This is the first time I read a story which is at least 70% flashbacks and I... more>> have to say that she really did a great job with this narrative technique. It creates suspense and somehow I feel as if I was dragged into the story and forced to experience our poor mc's pain ;-;

Next, every character has a purpose in the story. They all have a reason for being who they are. (For e.g. Jiang Cheng, we expect him to stand up for Wei Ying yet he chose to hate him instead. However, we can't even hate him for being this way since he already has a stubborn character and Wei Ying is the indirect cause of many tragedies in his life.)

That includes the villains, of course! They are not just mere flat characters placed there to drag the story but what keeps the story going.

Last of all, I have to talk about the couple. For people who likes smutty BL novel, sorry to burst your bubble but there certainly not much romance till the later part of the story but that subtle hints of romance throughout the story is really sweet. You can see how much Lan Zhan care and treasure Wei Ying and that itself is very heartbreaking since he is easily misunderstood due to how quiet (aka tsundere) he is. Not to worry though for all is well in the end and the smut shalt come!

Overall, this story messes me up every day. One moment I will be laughing non-stop thanks to our MC and the next moment my heart is broken into pieces (thanks to the MC too) yet this is the reason why it is a great story. It is the emotions and the feels! |Right in the kokoro. *Inserts meme* |

Tsundere, aloof & protective ML X Shameless, funny & smart MC <<less

One of the best light novel I've found on here so far (besides King's Avatar). I'm not a BL shipper yet still enjoy it very much.

Why? Most of the works I´ve attempted to read from this website got me facepalming pretty fast (kind of like Jiang Cheng actually). I mean... MC too many advantages without having to do anything for it, too Mary Sue, too... just... ugh. The characters' personality too flat, too plain, just... ugh. Plot goes from A to B to A to B... just... ugh. And then... more>> I found this.

English is not my native language, yet after having read various books over the years the translation was easy to follow. If I had to nitpick anything it´s the character names. All characters own 2-3 of those (birth name, clan name, courtesy name)... it gets a bit confusing after a while.

The pacing is too hurried indeed and keeps jumping but this actually gives MDZS even more the feel of a somewhat episodic ghost story even though the happenings are very connected. It somehow fits.

As for the characters, I find them to be quite charming, some are very ambigious and/or vicious, none are truly evil I think. The romance moves slowly indeed, torturing the poor BL fans *hehe* Myself, I prefer it like this, I read it for the rest anyway :p

Definitely on the lookout for another one like it.

Because I just have to when I see people dissing work and author because of simplicity and not disliked tropes & the likes: While this novel got quite a few plot devices and plot armors abounding at the start especially I went into it fully knowing what the category light novel entails. They are usually written like modern YA literature and anyone expecting a masterpiece of a plot should head over to goodreads or gutenberg. <<less

I started this novel like three months ago, and I decided to read it as the novel was well known for its comedy and mystery plot.

This is my first time to find a demei novel that exceeds my expectation. The story is worth reading even if you are not interest in male romances, as the story is quite an eye opener if this is yours first demei novel and the plot is a page turner.

The story starts with an amazing chapter that can give your worst day a reason to... more>> live another day. The MC is haliarious and the author does a terrific job at keeping you on the edge. I look forward to read the other half of the novel.

The anime is also amazing if you love ancient chinese setting! <<less

I'm not the type of writing review for unfinished series, but... here we go.

First time reading it, I got a massive headache. These are my rant for the novel, which I mainly blamed it on myself.

Spoiler
  1. The novel introduced three names (birth name, courtesy name, and title), and the MC got four names since he was reborn into a sacrificial body called MoXuanYu who wanted a revenge against his family.
  2. Too many similar sounding names. For example: LanlingJin, Jinlin tower, Jin Ling. I was super confused for several times when I encounter this several names in a chapter. I really thank the translator, K, for making it easier for the reader and changed the Jinlin Tower into Koi/Carp Tower.
  3. Flashbacks. Even though the flashbacks from either Wei WuXian or other characters are interesting, its made me forget the present events so I had to go back on the previous chapters to find out what was going on. I blamed it on my sad memory.
  4. The language. English is my third language. Even though I'm not really proficient at writing or speaking it, I could make sure that I have a basic reading English. But this novel had such poetic language and I had a really hard time trying to decipher it. Again, I blamed it on myself.

Basically, my memory and my thinking process are not suitable for this type of novel.

[collapse]

I tried re-reading for several times, and I finally got the gist of it after five times re-reading it (and five times suffering from headache). As a super masochistic lady, I actually enjoyed it very much. I love it when the author hinted that Lan WangJi loves Wei WuXian very much, such as:

Spoiler
  1. Lan WangJi noticed that MoXuanYu was actually Wei WuXian. He knew that Mo XuanYu was Wei WuXian because he saw Wei WuXian's horrible flute play.
    1. Wei WuXian tried to disgust Lan Wangji (since he was an uptight man), which much to Wei WuXian's knowledge, Lan WangJi bear with his attitude and instead bring Wei WuXian to his home/sect.
    2. ML's elder brother, Lan XiChen, pointed out that Lan WangJi seemed really happy with Wei WuXian's arrival.
    3. Lan WangJi dragged Wei WuXian to his room. Which no one else ever go inside.
    4. Lan WangJi saved several pot of wine on his room for Wei WuXian.
  2. After the Wei WuXian was reborn, Lan WangJi complied with Wei WuXian's 'ridiculous' attitude which he hates the most when Wei WuXian was still alive
    1. He drank a wine because Wei WuXian asked him to. He was such an uptight man and never touch alcohol.
    2. The drunken Lan WangJi told that Wei WuXian was his. Although our dense main character thought that Lan WangJi referred to his own sword.
    3. Drunken Lan WangJi was very jealous to Wen Ning. He even told Wei WuXian to play flute only for himself and no one else.
[collapse]

This novel tugged my heartstrings so much that I can't help but to be more and more in love with this. Even though I have headaches to deal with and in a danger to be a super masochist. <<less

Summary:

Free-spirited Wei Wuxian was the promising head disciple of an upright sect, before he became interested in necromancy and dark arts. He casually founded a demonic sect and was hated by the world. Betrayed by his younger apprentice-brother, he dies a gruesome death.

Several years later, a lunatic young man conducts a ritual to summon an evil spirit -- and Wei Wuxian's soul is called into his body. Even though he holds no thoughts of revenge and wants to live freely, he quickly runs into people from his past -- including... more>> Jiang Chen, the beloved brother who betrayed him, and Lan WangJi, the cold-faced guy who despised him in their youth.

Lan WangJi ends up saving Wei Wuxian and uncharacteristically takes him in... What are his motives? Does he know who he is? And why does this unfathomable ice cube seem to have changed?

Unique points:

    • This story is set in a typical xianxia cultivation world, but with a twist -- this is a world in which the dead easily feed off resentment and become ghouls, ghosts, and zombies. Though the immortal cultivators and sects are the same, the countless undead give this story a unique world.
    • The main character isn't the typical pure or weak uke. He's a shameless rascal, a wild chatterbox, and playfully direct. He's the type of guy who is never bored and can talk a brick wall to death. He's also a bit like a mad scientist -- someone who does what he wants and studies things that are considered taboo to the rest of the world.
Writing:

The chapters are nice and long, and the plot advances at just the right pace. It is a relatively smooth read. However, the most difficult part of this story are the character names -- most characters are called by 2 or 3 different names/titles. All the side characters are given names too (more than physical descriptions), so it's easy to get confused.

As for the translations, Enxiao was kind enough to start this series off, and even though the English could use some work, the translation wasn't that bad. However, I suggest reading Exiled Rebels' translation instead because it's higher quality and easier to understand.

Rating:

Overall, I would give this story 4.5 stars so far. The world is well fleshed-out, the premise is unique, and the characters are interesting. The undead/necromancy aspect make this unique from other xianxia LNs, and the focus on the plot and mystery rather than romance make this feel more substantial than most BL LNs.

Update:

Despite everyone else's glowing reviews, I ended up dropping this series. It just couldn't keep my attention, and like the author's other novels, the side characters were all two-dimensional and blended together.

However, I do recommend the manga / manhua, it has surprisingly good art and pacing. I will probably keep up with the story there instead. <<less

I read this two years ago and my obsession with it hasn't faded. I'm not sure what else to say. The plot is intricate, the characters are flawed but understandable, and the romance... um. It's maybe the best written danmei romance I've ever read simply because of the tragedy of it all. I feel for Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji and all the supporting characters. Every. single. one of them.

I've yet to find someone in the danmei world who writes plots better than MXTX, who consistently keeps it tied in with the CP, has engaging side characters, and gutwrenching twists. From an objective viewpoint, MDZS has the best plot of all her novels. While I personally don't find ML a very interesting character, the rest of the story makes up for him.

I only docked a star because I personally got so invested in the mu*der mystery that the (actually crucially important) flashbacks started to bore me.
