In a romance novel called “The Secret Lovers of the Academy” the male lead would often torment his fiancée–but wait, why did she cross into this world to become his fiancée, the villainess, instead of the heroine?

Louise Sweeney found the perfect solution to escape the misfortune of being the villainess: “Your Highness, I just want to tell you that we don’t have to be tied with our engagement. We weren’t even officially engaged, right?”

But what was wrong with the male lead’s reaction? To her suggestion, he replied “But our engagement wasn’t false, don’t you agree?”

I normally love dense heroines but this MC borders on Bakarina's level of density. This MC stubbornly refuses to realize that because of her, the story itself (and the end) has already changed so much that she can't use her knowledge of the novel to make inferences. She doesn't realize that due to her meddling, everyone around her is different than the novel that she read even though she's already been living in this universe for many years.

Spoiler

She is constantly confused when the Male Lead doesn't behave the way she expects him (to from the novel), DESPITE spending her childhood with him and literally growing up with him. MC realized she was in a novel when they were young kids and spent a large majority of her childhood with the Male Lead yet now that she is in the Academy with him, she is constantly surprised and confused when he doesn't act or respond the way he's suppose according to in the novel. Due to MC's presence in Male Lead's childhood, he is now a yandere (completely different from his personality in the novel). It just doesn't make sense, girl you grew up with this guy, yet you still don't realize or accept that his personality is now wholly different than the novel. Sometimes it feels like she knows him very well, and other times it seems like she knows nothing about him. It really contradicts the childhood and history the two have together.

[collapse]

She's just stubbornly dense to a fault. She idealizes all the characters in the 'novel' but doesn't (or stubbornly refuses to) realize that because of her, everyone is different than the novel.
Spoiler

The Male Lead is really obvious with his feelings for MC, yet she is constantly making up excuses for his behavior to the point that it's so contrived and forced that nobody can believe it except for her.

[collapse]

Other than that, the novel itself is enjoyable and the translation is very well done. <<less

To be honest, it's boring. It doesn't offer anything new or interesting in the "reincarnated as an otome villain (ess) " genre so it's not exactly interest grabbing. The plot is... not really there, tbh; it's just dull descriptions of the campus life of a dense protagonist and the black-bellied prince who loves her. The most groundbreaking thing about this novel is the fact that the translator uses character icons to indicate dialogue, which is very new. Unfortunately, it's not my thing (I find that it takes my attention away... more>> from the story unlike something like text color) but I can see how people would like it.

Overall review, there's nothing about this story that appeals to me. This might be enjoyable if it's your first otome villain novel but, even then, I could suggest upwards of 10 that would be a better read. <<less

Why so many 1 star?

I actually liked the way the translator, translates. There's a character icon beside the speeches it kinda reminded me of a chat box.

The pacing is good too. You have a calm level headed MC and a calm smiling bully ML. Their bickering is so cute too.

Give it a try and ignore those 1 star rating!

I like it, this is cute.

The bickering between MC and ML is adorable and so far I feel the story is pretty well-written. Kudos to the translators for doing an amazing job so far. Looking forward to more!

Not that interesting. Typical MC transmigrates into novel and somehow without doing anything makes ML fall for her without her realising. MC doesn't look that smart.

The flow of the story is like a screenplay with character icons against the dialogue and description of the scenes in between. Am not a big fan of this format as it kind of breaks the flow of a story. Translation was good to follow.

MC is a transmigrator who is living in a villainess's body and trying to change her fate. Nothing new in the storyline.

Things which didn't work for me..

1, Too much prose but nothing is happening.... more>>
Spoiler

I don't want to read a chapter to know someone was braiding MCs hair or how she was served tea by x.. Certain chapters were like fillers for me. Nothing was important just two people (mostly MC and someone other than ML) talking

[collapse]

2, MC trying to be a kindhearted character who will do s*upid things which she knows will get her in trouble. I expected a smarter MC
Spoiler

- the cheating on test episode

[collapse]

3, There is some chemistry between the ML and MC but initial couple of chapters were horrible when these two conversed. Not a big fan of irrelevant banter. I like bickering couple but here, their conversations are odd. Can't say exactly why I felt like it was awkward/one sided ? Not sure.

4, I dont get MC's character type. She does not give that feeling you get when a villainess tries to change her fate. She lacks courage and decisiveness.
Spoiler

She keeps saying she has to take a different route or else she will have a bad ending but I see her still sticking with the two characters (ML and Sec. ML) who can damage her. You see her contradicting herself. There was a lot of scope to make it funny but it just kept going on and on about the same "i need to leave ML and he can love heroine" and then she goes " I am so lonely" or " someone hurt me" puff ML appears but he doesnt do much.

[collapse]

Overall - Its an Ok story if you are looking for a shoujo manga like plot with heartfelt moment here and there. I am dropping this unfortunately. <<less

I like the MC. She is pretty much level-headed. She is not naive nor gullible, unlike other MCs of this genre. She is also not the cunning, scheming, ruthless type. She is basically a normal person.

She wants to avoid the Prince as she knows what would happen to her if she continues to mingle with him. Yet at the same time, she is kind enough not to ignore him when she sees him struggling or in a difficult situation. She is also not in love with the Prince.

What I... more>> like is her dedication to her studies and for a better future. Also, though she might be afraid of the Prince, her fear doesn't hinder her from saying or doing what she wants. Hence, she does not pretend before him or anything. That's why I say that she is not the cunning or scheming type.

I prefer an MC to be like this which is why this novel is unique among the others.

Aside from that, I also like how the background of the ML's personality was written.

I just hope that the MC will be perceptive enough to realise the difference of the ML'S actions towards her compared to the original story of the novel she read. I long to see a MC who will counter such different or unexpected actions FROM the ML. <<less

EDIT: now that I have basically read it all, I wanted to put down my thoughts. Overall, my opinion hasn't changed, it's quite standard/cliche story wise, but the true star is the author's characterization and writing skills. Cheesy as it is, her dialogue is stellar, it flows and feels so organic that the banter never feels forced. The friendship between the main 3 is fantastically written, and honestly I adored their friendship. That said, MC has your typical "everyone loves her" ordeal and honestly the plot is a little cheesy... more>> at times, but if you look past that, this story is very well written and quite enjoyable. Please give it a shot if you like shoujo manga.

—————

Not very original, but still very cute. It's a fluffy story about a villainess girl who was engaged to the ML, accidentally made him fell in love with her and didn't realize, and now she's trying to avoid destruction and get the MC together with the ML. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but the characters are pretty solid, and the art is quite pretty. The cliches are there (all the capture targets love her not the MC, she's absolutely oblivious from the intentions of everyone else). Translations are also quite good, although the character portraits next to every dialogue line is a hit or miss kinda thing. The only minor original thing is that Louise ships the MC and the ML so she wants the two together.

Overall it's unoriginal but cute, if you want something light hearted, akin to shoujo manga, then this is it. Please do check it out and decide for yourself whether or not you'd like to continue or not. <<less

It is a typical school romance story. You know, naive female lead with two childhood friends inlove with her. One friend is the alpha male in the story who is head-over-heels inlove with her (always the powerful guy like a prince, ceo, president, etc.). Then the other friend who is secretly in love with her no-matter-what (being ignored, supports the female lead in secret, a martyr).

The novel's transmigrated female lead is a dully painted villain. She tried to live being good since young, to avoid the pre-destined tragic ending of... more>> a villain. Thus, she changed history, then every cosmic stars were aligned to her to become the female lead instead (I'm being sarcastic here).

I said it is dull, because of the underdevelop villain characterazation (or no speck of dirt of being one at all!). Just my opinion, that is one of the biggest turn down of this novel.

The transmigrated female lead, which is supposedly the villain, has a "female lead halo" from the very beginning of the story (loved and liked by everyone, always has the lucky streak on everything, etc.). There are no indications, or any struggles from her villanous destinty, that she is a villain at all. She is a villain poser.

As for the development of the story, it is as predicatble as I know where the sun will rise and set.

The translation is ok. 3/5. Just my opinion, those character picture in every dialouge is just distracting.

I guess, it is good for those who like a chill and easy reading. <<less

s*upidly dense MC, boring ML

Barely any chemistry between the two at all.

Just a generic otome game villainess MC novel. If you want an unoriginal and brainless fluffy romance to read while you turn off your brain, here you have it.

One more thing to mention, the MC is the "villainess", yet she's painted as a perfect angel who can do no wrong. She's more of a Mary Sue than the actual "FL".

If there was something like a translators' ranking I'd rate it 5/5 however I since I have to rate the actual novel: 2/5

If you want to see the amazing work done by the translators, please check out their other works instead. Those people giving this novel a high rating thinking it will help the translators are doing a great disservice to the readers hoping for a true rating.

I haven't seen enough interesting content in this story which can help it stand out what's already done.

Novel not recommended to read.

MC is a dense girl who crossed into the greatest villain Louise Sweeney.

She tries to avoid the ML but falls in love with him anyway. Up to here, the novel and manwha are both fine.

... more>> It’s everything after that ruins the story and really shows how terrible the MC is.

First off, MC has knowledge of the future: she knows what disasters, other type of corruption, and all sorts of other bad events will happen.

MC does nothing. She doesn’t warn the prince about future corruption, she doesn’t stop scumbag bullies at her school, and she can’t even prove she’s not a scumbag cheater.

No, she has to be saved by the ML, cry on the ML, and confess to the ML about her origins to be reassured enough not to be a scumbag.

Even if the original heroine is a threat, why is the MC suddenly acting like a scumbag and not preventing bullying?!?

Author completely forgets that MC is a student council representative and that this is actually part of her job to prevent incidents like these. Moreover you have quite a bit of the MC completely acting OOC so that the ML can swoop in to save the day. There’s a lot of annoying parts where MC is restrained by status and etiquette when she acts haphazardly elsewhere in the story.

Second, the ML is a strange character. You could say that he protects the MC, but then how did he allow her to be framed and bothered by Stella. You could say he wants to care for her, but then how come he lets the scumbag Rozen lady continually act out of line. Really don’t like these useless teasing ML types that don’t end up doing much to guard their FL. It took ML the longest time to give MC any reassurance and even longer for him to clear up the misunderstandings between them.

There’s a lot of time sunk into the other students, but the school story tends to drag on. Unless you really are hooked by the romance, the novel swiftly falls apart.

It’s just another mediocre villainess story except with the MC not acting like a villainess at all and just being a cowardly paranoid moron for a lot of the novel. -900Tril/10.

P.S. The second male guy is really a great guy. Wish he had ended up with a better storyline, but ehh what can you do. <<less

I got bored and stopped reading around chapter 60 or so. The way the story emphasizes just how perfect and pretty and kind Louise is gets kind of irritating, as does the characters seemingly refuse to progress in any way. The last straw was being framed for cheating after she thinks about what a "terrible villain" she is for not intending to go easy on Stella after going out of her way to help her, only for Stella to apparently be complicit in framing her. Yeah, I get it, the... more>> teacher's a bit*h and Stella either is too or is at best not willing to stand up for her, but the situation just makes me roll by eyes at how the story treats her like some martyr.

As for the characters not changing, the story only works because Louise is too s*upid to realize that the prince is in love with her even though she knows exactly how the prince in love behaves. For the prince's part, it also only works here because he's ALSO too s*upid to realize. Thus, they're at this point of quasi dating for sixty chapters because of how thick the characters are.

2.5/5, rounding down because I realized I don't have any GOOD things to say about it, only parts that I feel were competently written. <<less

It's very original in it's unoriginality

Reincarnating as the villainess of the story, raising a flag her and there, dense to surrounding events/people, the personality of the FM and ML

I expect the illustration of the FM as villainess is domeenring type of character, a proper noble lady like thing, with sharp eyes and so on, but instead we got Mary Sue type of illustration, I mean in the original story she should like that right?

I don't mind with cliche story IF the author could deliver it with his own style, instead... more>> like I said very original in it's unoriginality

The grammar is good enough for me, the transalator did a good job about that, but what is it about the icon? It's massive turn off for me, it as if we, the reader is so s*upid that we can't differentiate between which character speaking from from the descriptions

Well the point is, it's not my cup of tea, this is just my rant, you shouldn't decide not to read the novel because of my comment, just read it first then decide later, who knows if this gonna be your favorite <<less

I specifically was turned off by the bad reviews and so didn't want to read this for the longest time but I'll be honest, after finishing all the chapters...I have to check that we're reading the same novel??? I didn't think that the MC was a pushover at all; she was doing her best to navigate pretty overwhelming forces dumped on her by social politics. Slapping faces and complaining to higher powers is all well and good until you remember that a) as Louise noted, some tactics only work if... more>> the people in charge actually care about truth and justice b) that having the support of royalty does not equal immunity--even I felt like Ian was taking a risk
Spoiler

by so blatantly challenging Prof. Lassen (and by extension, probably a lot of the traditionally-minded nobles). Historically, this did not work out for his father. Is everyone forgetting that its implied that the nobles hated Ian's commoner mother so much that some of them poisoned her to death???? The king's social influence did not save her. Being the queen did not save her. Like, let's not underestimate the lengths to which people like Lassen will go to preserve the "purity of the nobility." Ian is saved by the fact that he can plausibly deny at the time that his interference is anything but actions within the bounds of his role as StuCo president, thus reducing the urgency of the situation in the eyes of Lassen and those similar to her. That bit*h is consequently willing to bide her time to suppress Louise (which of course, backfires because Ian already had countermeasures in place after the first incident). You can bet that if she had an earlier inkling that Ian was planning on MARRYING Louise, the response would have been swifter and perhaps deadlier than expulsion and defamation.

[collapse]

Whether Louise should have asked Ian, her best friend and fiance, for help can be debated; in any case, I empathize--if I were in her position, I don't know that I'd feel comfortable asking my friend to keep wielding his social influence for my sake. In fact, because "I" care deeply about his well-being and am anxious about losing his good opinion (and whether I know that my anxieties reflect reality or not), I would feel pretty bad about having to "trouble" him. While Louise is willing to bear unhappiness with Ian, she doesn't want to cause more unhappiness to be heaped upon him.
Spoiler

Besides, what is character growth for? She eventually learns to lean on him after realizing that a) it's a waste not to use your resources (sort of a joke) and b) it hurts him more to put that kind of distance between them (more truthful). Is! This! Not! Character! Development!

[collapse]

The only thing I'm displeased with is the ending. So abrupt! So many loose ends untied!! There's enough for a short sequel. Had to sit through so much background politicking and now I don't even get to enjoy when Louise has more of an upper hand?
Spoiler

When Claire is working to end forced marriages?? What did Simon study overseas anyway?? What about those noble families that probably still haven't gotten over the fact that there's another commoner queen??? (because the author straight up says that they haven't. see: the part when nobody who went to the academy with Louise spoke up for her when all those malicious rumors about her were rampaging across the city.) Also heck, Louise's titled maternal grandfather is coming to seek benefits shamelessly after previously disowning her mom for marrying a commoner. I guess it's not that important, but I want to know what happens next!!

[collapse]

Anyway, the dialogue was well-paced. I wouldn't mind listening to an audio drama of this. I'm glad that the author decided to keep characters in character by taking into account motivations and mindsets. Stella does not go the villainess route in order to make Louise look better in comparison. Louise is not dense but being intentionally obtuse which one is worse though hahahaha There is actually no stereotypical rival character. Strong friendships are built on purposeful communication and honesty!!! *wipes tear* it's great <<less

Male lead and female lead chemistry is just not for me. The translation is great and the illustrations are also pretty but to be very honest the constant bickering between to two characters gets me quite annoyed. By themselves the two characters aren’t bad but together they just keep arguing in this monotonous manner that ends up with the male lead “winning” and the female angry or embarrassed. But then again if you like obsessive guys who teases you constantly go ahead~

I'm giving 5 stars in honouring the translators for doing a good job at translating the novel. I know this is supposed to rate the novel but there is no way I could ignore the great job that the translator did in making the novel enjoyable by putting in interesting images throughout the novel.

Now the novel itself is just like a typical isekai shoujo LN that can be found abundantly in this website. What makes it interesting is only the interaction between the MC and the people around her. Her... more>> level on "cluelessness" was also not as bad as Bakarina since the ML himself always tried to cover up his feelings by constantly teasing her everytime they were in an awkward situation. If they could just be honest with each other instead of dropping hint, now that would be easier.

Overall, I hope this gets illustrated in a manga since it would be an interesting shoujo manga read. <<less

My reviews or reactions while reading the book:

My God the protagonist was dense.

Definitely not what I expected from the reviews. I thought it was just gonna be a cliche that you read to feel good. Boy was I wrong. I cried. A lot. Don't get me wrong, this most isn't great. Mediocre at best.

... more>> The volume of Second male lead syndrome in this astronomical. Probably one of the most saddest route for the second male lead I've ever read. As we all know, life in royalty is not fun.

A little spoily bits. But I'm surprise this didn't go down the reverse harem route or polyandry. It seems like the perfect foundation too. And I'm pretty sure almost all the readers would appreciate the leads all ending up together, I sure would!

I dropped this because it got boring. If they did the RH route this could be more interesting. <<less

The earlier chapters feels entertaining to read but as it's progressing it becomes stale and s*upid. The main characters is way too passive and never actually make any important desicion by herself. She have to be persuaded by a bunch of people to make a desicions, just because she's way too indecisive and to be honest she's not so bright on the mentality department. Ironically the weakest point in this story is the female lead herself, she's dragging the whole story way too long and because of that the melodrama... more>> actually feels s*upid instead of touching or wholesome. <<less
