Ukei Kaito fought a desperate struggle in order to fulfill his role as a summoned hero. He defeated the Demon Lord and saved the very world, only to meet an end filled with betrayal. The companions that he’d trusted throughout his journey betrayed him and killed him by sticking a blade through his chest.

It was then that he swore to himself.

He swore that, if given another chance, he would no longer so rigidly cling to the concept of “faith/believe.”

He swore that, if given another chance, he would dedicate himself to enacting the most atrocious act of revenge possible.

He swore that, if given another chance, he would do things right.

「I’ll kill every single last one of you… I swear it…」

And so, he died, leaving behind not but a series of menacing last words — but his story had yet to end. A voice resounded through his head and informed him that there was more to his fate than what lay beyond the grave.

The beginning is really good, but the story gradually devolves into a mess of dragged-out torture p*rn, melodramatic narration and obnoxious ramblings.

Here's an example of the kind of nonsense that the MC spouts:

Spoiler

"Welcome, welcome back, Groooond! I've wanted to see you, so, so, so, so long! Over and over and over and over I wanted to seeeee you!!"

I wanted to see him, to meet him.

Couldn't help it, couldn't help it.

「Ahah hah hah hah hah! Again and again and again and again and again I saw you in my dreams! I tried to hurry and hurry and hurry and hurry and hurry and see you again! And now I do, NOW I GET TO SEE YOU! AHAH HAH HAH HAH HAH!」

[collapse]

It's just over the top and makes it hard to take things seriously. The MC and his followers only seem to have two modes: raving endlessly about their urge to torture people and discussing their relationship with the MC.

It drags down what would have been a really engaging story if the author hadn't decided to make his MCs crazy. While I hate to say it, I finally get why translators kept dropping it. It didn't live up to its potential.

That said, the art is still ? <<less

Revenge isn't driven by rational thought nor mindless instinct, it is driven by emotion. At the same time, art can be defined as a way to express human emotion. This novel is such an art that tells of a revenge story.

A big part of the story tells of the MC's plotting at and torturing the revenge targets that wronged him in his previous life while he strengthen himself in a typical LitRPG manner. Because most of the tragedy part of the story is in flashback, you don't have to go... more>> through much of its discomfort while still having full of that emotional justification and satisfaction in the suffering of the revenge targets.

Other than the disturbing character of the MC, you might find the number yanderes and the bad translation from JackOFallTrades off-putiing. But other than that, the story is engaging and well thought out <<less

Premise: The protagonist was a transmigrator who came to a standard adventure-compatible fantasy world as the Hero with a broken unique ability. He went through the whole story template of the genre; collecting party members, fighting monsters, clearing dungeons and finally defeating the demon lord. However, as it turns out, as a fish-out-of-water 17 years old Japanese high-schooler he wasn't the best judge of character, as he didn't notice that all of his "comrades" were racist, sadistic psychopaths, and the moment the war was over, they pinned all their... more>> own crimes on him and hunted him down. Upon his death, however, it turned out that the four years he had experienced was just a "tutorial mode" set up by the gods, and so he is taken back in time to the point he was first summoned, but this time he swears bloody revenge on all his betrayers. In this task he is aided by his repertoire of broken magical swords locked behind XP walls, his knowledge of the future, and most importantly, his "accomplices", fellow avengers he recruits using one of his swords' special ability.

Pros:

    • The character writing is decent, if sometimes a bit over-the-top.
    • It's revenge-fantasy at its purest.
    • The author is really creative when it comes to physical and mental torture of unrepentant villains.
Neutrals:

    • The story is shaping up to be an unnecessary harem, with both subordinate-avengers being pretty girls who are instantly attracted to the protagonist, plus he himself obviously has a crush on the demon lord, so that's already three girls in two volumes.
    • The girls are running on gap-moe, so whether you like them or not heavily relies on whether you like the archetype itself.
    • The translation quality, between the various TL groups, is... uneven, to say the least.
Cons:

    • Every single named character outside of the MC and his accomplices are either card-carrying villains, or unrepentant psychopaths hiding in plain sight, which gets old after a while.
    • Since the people who wronged the protagonist in the "first run" obviously didn't get to actually betray him in this timeline, his obsession with ruining, torturing and killing them in this timeline is a little petty... so then the author spends an inordinate amount to pages to justify how they are the worst human beings anyway to reassure the readers they deserve it, which kinda feels like putting the cart before the hose, not to mention it gets repetitive real quick.
    • The RPG system of the setting is not very well-developed, with stats and skills being explained only in broad strokes.
Overall, if you are looking for an isekai story that is different from the bajillion others on the site, or you are just looking for a straight-up revenge-fic in order to experience some quick catharsis and let off some steam, you can do a lot worse than this story, but other than that, there is not much to make it stand out. The MC's motivation and inner turmoil is explored just enough so that he is not flat, but not enough so that he would become really memorable, and the same could be said about the entire work. I wouldn't recommend it if you are disturbed by wanton torture of one note villains done by lead characters with borderline manipulatively horrible backstories. <<less

If you like revenge maddness novels then this is for you. Though I read many like this I must say it's unique in it's delivery. I love the levels they go through for vengeance. I have seen more than enough naive and semi-smart MC now I will gourge myself with these types of protags.

Someone reviews does injustice about this novel, for example, he has every right to seek revenge to the princess and the whole royal family, cause if you read the novel beyond chapter 1, the whole summoning process actually killed all his, family, friends and anyone that has relations with him, to pull him to their world, just to be treated as monster and a tool to be conviniently used then discarded after.

So far reading it is quite satisfied when he takes revenge on those deserve that. However, this novel is written from his POV, which makes it so hard to relate. It would be better if it was written in 3rd person.

This novel provides a darker, more twisted side of hero summoning stories. Summoned to fight the demon king, but betrayed and killed by those he trusted most, but sent back in time with the memories of his betrayal, because unlike the rest of the world, the goddess of said world isn't an as*hole and ACTUALLY cares about the people summoned. This novel also gives a very sick, twisted yet satisfying pleasure, a pleasure that no one would ever get to experience themselves, which is what makes this novel so amazing.... more>> It brings something fresh to the whole "summoned to another world" genre. Now this novel won't be for everyone and there were a couple times where I felt..... awkward reading it, but overall its a fresh and unique take on a genre that quite frankly needs a bit of spice. <<less

The weird thing about Nidome no Yuushi is that despite it's super edge lord premise, it's actually a fairly standard isekai and kind of mediocre because the author doesn't quite have the skill to live up to his premise. Don't get me wrong, the first couple of revenge scenarios were actually halfway decent (with the second one probably being the best plotted) but the rest of them are frankly, kind of underwhelming. Let me put it this way - the author, quite far into the novel, finally discovers that the... more>> protagonists primary motivation of carrying out revenge is completely hollow without the target of that revenge comprehending what they did wrong (as they have no memories of the "first world") so he contrives a completely baloney power power to "restore" those memories just so that reading the torture doesn't come off as 100% completely psychotic (only like, 50% psychotic).

There's also additional problems that are common to this genre - like way too many side characters related to the protagonist, so ultimately there isn't enough pages devoted to any of them to make them interesting, yet the author keeps writing about them... it seems all so pointless. The protagonist himself is also pretty s*upid and dense, with his intelligence and emotional maturity fluctuating wildly depending on what the author needs him to do in support of the story. Pretty much all the hallmarks of bad isekai writing are here, I'm sure you guys know what they are.

Honestly, I think the biggest problem with this series is that the author actually never 100% commits to the premise. He keeps adding things to soften the protagonist that just don't make any sense. For instance, the protagonist has the love of his life die in the first timeline, so when he is reborn do you think he rushes to her side to save her? Hell no, instead he nearly forgets about her entirely until like chapter 30 or something and just focuses on his "revenge". Then finally, when he does meet her - he basically throws himself at her feet without even a thought that "Oh yeah, she won't remember me." Hell, he doesn't even decide to use his completely bullsh!t power of restoring someones memory on the love of his life. He has too many companions, although they distract from the story (and indeed, the second companion he meets is literally a big zero since he meets her and resolves her revenge in like the span of 4 chapters - what is the damn point of this author-san???).

This story would have been a million times better if they had dropped all of the secondary characters and s*upid demon lord is the love interest sub-plot and instead focused on the MC and the Yandere Saintess. I mean, a calculating revenge filled hero bringing down nations and killing his enemies while being hounded by a psycho yandere sounds awesome. Instead we got this.

I don't really rate Nidome no Yuusha and it's not because of the edge, it's because it has all the common mediocre writing and flaws of bargain bas**ent isekai novels. <<less

Hmm this novel is extremely good......... If you are looking for a novel with just revenge and way of torturing. This novel seriously doesn't have any other quirk other than it's sadist, dumb and hypocrite MC. The way he tortures a enemy is extremely inhumane, he acts like he was locked up in a prison for millions of year, while being tortured and remaining completely sane (not becoming like kaneki of TG). So that he have to give his enemy taste of the their own medicine. But the way author... more>> portraits it, it feels like MC is doing what he should to the enemy and they deserve it. Dumb cause, he talks too much nonsense act like "" I am L and I'm planning to take my revenge in this way I've planned this that etc."" But in reality he doesn't plan a cra* he act as long as he finds a enemy without any other thoughts other than how to torture the enemy. Hypocrite cause he killed the demon Lord (female) who loved him. Although he will say crap like "I felt a strong pain in my as... Ahem chest when I killed her although I didn't want to I have to" hm ain't he a hypocrite he killed her cause he wanted to go back to his own world. So I think author should just stop trying to make him look like a tragic hero. <<less

There's an initial thrill to this novel for beginners in the anti-hero revenge genre. I found it quite enjoyable for the first few arcs. But then I took a break from it after the second arc and when I did come back, the story had morphed into something unrecognizable. It read like straight up nonsense when his little sister was dragged in for no reason.

Still, the story has its merits. People down in the dumps and bitter with their lot in life can find some pleasure in reading about this... more>> boy's bloody revenge. <<less

Rather nice fresh experience of the MC actually going fully edge most of the time. Actually going around torturing people and killing them to get revenge. It being done so over the top you can't but laugh and want to face palm at the same time. Feels like author read tate no yuusha and went like. HMM?? I could write this, just more EDGE! And that's pretty much the essence of the novels.

Surprisingly the writing, pacing and characters are quite good. At least they hold up for whatever part they... more>> have in the whole of the story. The rpg setting is mostly quite minimal or used in a nice way. So doesn't feel like reading yet another isekai again.

That being said. The series does have a pretty big problem. The author likes writing flashbacks to when MC was a hetare, a mattress, without springs. Usually it's like 20-30% of each vol has these segments. They are outright like reading yet another isekai ln. So it's boring as hell. Usually it get used part of the story to build up the later parts. So you mostly don't mind

By vol 6 though. Author seems to think you'd enjoy an entire vol with this hetare shit. My god it's boring. Vol 7 feels just as bad, adding trope and dry chars that feels so bad. Any leftovers of originality gets destroyed, not even the edge can keep you reading this anymore.

Summed up. Nice series with over the top edge, somewhat flawed, but overall good writing, might as well stop at vol 6 though. <<less

Author likes to go off on extreme tangents. Also, lots of reviews about the MC being a sadist, but there's tons of internal monologue that disputes this. Other than certain brutal scenes, he reads like every other timid, boring and introverted MC in almost any other Japanese LN. I can't help but wonder if these scenes of the MC pondering and second guessing just doesn't translate well since nearly every author out there seems to lean on it.

On the rare occasions that the main characters are behaving like lunatics or... more>> you get the perspective from his lulharem, at least then it's not boring. Also another lulharem, in which the MC gathers lots of ladies that are in love with him only to be too dense and/or shy to move the relationship past acknowledging their existences.

Maybe some of lightnoveltranslations worst work. The translation quality isn't quite aneurysm causing, but there were multiple times per chapter where I had to stop and interpret (or just stop caring and skim for close enough). <<less

Just dropped it after I hit an entire section of chapters just plain missing.

This thing has been picked up and dropped so many times its a mess and it's not a good enough of a story to warrant me figuring out this shit.

Revenge for the sake of revenge does not interest me that much... revenge is just a side dish to a better main course and you are wasting your life if that is your only goal.

It's a story of a hero that betrayed by most of his world and now seeking revenge by getting "replay" in that world. It's really amusing considering the MC consistently getting revenge and still being somewhat sane, the revenge part is well-detailed and so fulfilling IMO (there are no r*pe-like-revenges like a certain LN with the same revenge-setting, I hate it). His heroines also have unique yandere trait that really different from your usual heroine, what I like is every heroine also get betrayed so there are many revenge story... more>> for the future :D.

For the plot, the pacing is alright and how the hero's betrayed is really bad that will make you mad. The world-building is fine enough eventhough it's not the main focus. Overall its worth to read if you're seeking antihero with remarkable attitude (for being antihero of course) and if you like revenge story. <<less

The grammar from the translator is horrid, seriously what idiot is doing this? If theyre getting paid they should be fired immediately. I cant follow along because it doesnt make sense, maybe it gets better or something. However im not sure if I could follow the story based on actual writting either, that could be the authors fault or the translator. Review based in LN raws

Dispite being average in plot and writing, I found myself reading the raws for the romance.

The people who wronged the MC is not some random idiot with no motivation character wise and the romantic subplots is much more compelling than the main plot itself.

demon lord is best girl (from sad memories), sister is second best (more in vol6). I mean they are not present in the main plot and yet it is so beautiful

Brief summary and main gripe

Spoiler

his enemies have gained something from MC and others first round, so he gets them back through mental and physical torture

MC is pretty inefficient for not taking money off corpses (trader had like so much money and MC just melts the coins) and not stealing back magic from magician dispite having the means to before swording the magician to death

I'm not going to lie to you, this is just shield hero but 200 times the edgy part. Yet can't lie to you and say I enjoyed it. The main girl is pretty dam cute and the MC is unique if anything I do enjoy him being the villain, their sadistic side are interesting to watch honestly. But I guess this really is just a guilty pleasure although I know their is the substance is not the strongest, it's the finally the version when the hero that get teleported to... more>> another world go berserk and becomes the villain. As stated objective it's not the best bc of the way they set up things so impact for revenge and chatper development is hurt by this yet it still manages to be objective at least solid borderline good and with the unique twist my guilty pleasure puts it at borderline of great. Shield hero does everything better essentially but this one does it more edgy and you can enjoy it for that reason and that reason alive. (As stated, however, it does have other aspect going for it such as the understanding of revenge and psychological side, two main characters are quite and have potential and pretty cute moment between them and the relationship itself and its important and their interactions and a few more things I'm leave out bc this got way too long.) <<less

Pretty satisfying revenge themed story.I really liked the part when he took revenge on the female mage Yumis.

Still is seems rather weird that despite how powerful he was after he defeated the demon lord (i think he got lvl 300 or 400), while the rest of humans were not even lvl 150 and he still got chased everytime like a dog.

I hope Guts gets his revenge on Griffith.

I don't give 1 single danm if this guy gets his revenge. They try explaining it further through dreams but by those chapters I didn't care anymore either.

The stats feature is overly convoluted and it feels like the author just gives him new skills when the story needs them.

This was a likeable novel at first, but much like most other novels with the harem tag it just goes to shit. Very rarely have I read a novel with the harem tag, which did keep with its main plot. The MC just bought a s*ave and then another person came and another. Like most harems. This all under the pretext of gathering allies for his revenge, even though it is quite apparent that the girls are just there and nothing more. They are used for different reasons but like... more>> most harems they are just bland and uninteresting if you ask me. But depending on if you enjoy such things or not, this might not hinder your reading experience at all. It certainly did for me though and that's the reason I am giving it 2 stars. <<less
