Year 2056, in a city in the Yuan Jiang Su Jin area. On top of a ruined, shattered six story residential apartment sits a teenager wearing a combat vest, militaristic trousers, and alloyed battle boots. On his back is a hexagonal shield and equipped is a blood-shadow battle knife. He sits there silently on the edge of the roof. At this time, the sparkling sky was shining and there was a refreshing breath within the air that blew towards him. However, there was only silence within the ruined, deserted city, with an occasional howl that makes your heart skip a beat.

So I find this novel very entertaining and would normally give this novel a solid 4. The unique setting what really sets this novel apart and is most likely the cause of so many 5 star reviews. It's not nearly as unique as "forty millennium of cultivation" (this novel doesn't nearly come close to that one, but there's a fair comparison.).

This novel is full of the cliché. The type where "you have briefly offended me or one of my relatives so I shall now dedicate my life to fighting against... more>> or trying to kill you".

What dropped this novel to a 3 for me was that this novel, like every other Chinese novel that is based on a modern-ish setting, is that it is very nationalistic and racist. It does the standard white man is racist toward the Chinese so I am the good guy. When you get to the chapter where the man named Candace (lmao) is calling Asians c****s and other whites are purposely causing trouble for Chinese then you will notice what I mean (I'd say the racism/nationalism started with the first appearance of the Indian group but it wasn't bad for them in particular).

The novel also goes out of the way to say that Japan was destroyed by monsters (which should be no big surprise) and that now they're jealous of china (they also created a Japanese character named Bei Yuan Gang that is mean't to be offensive toward the Chinese and earn a brutal death). Most of the racism is subtle but it is fairly common and becomes sort of a chore to ignore.

This novel certainly had 5 star potential, but it became lazy and I find that to be a shame. This site is polarizing when it comes to reviews. People will give 1 star if there's something they don't like and 5 stars to counteract the 1 star reviews. This novel doesn't deserve either. It's a very entertaining novel that is really only meant for mainland Chinese with no connection to the outside world. You can't find western novels with this level of racism or cultural superiority complex. They would be too ashamed to ever publish these ridiculous things. <<less

Alright. First off, right out the gate, it's important to say that this is an unfinished novel. IET dropped it. At the very least, it ends at the end of an arc, but even so, it's not finished. Now onto my experience with the novel.

Alright, so I suck at writing these. First off, it's IET's worst novel. It's still IET's work though, so it's atleast of passable grade in general, hence the three stars. Anyway, the first two thirds or so are pretty damn good. About on par with the... more>> rest of his work. It's what's after that, that's where most of the issues come in. From changed translators to poor writing to predictable surprises, pretty much everything drops off here. I kept reading, but the entire time I was reading this section I wanted to drop it. It wasn't a pleasant experience. It's got all the generic tropes of any novel of this genre, of course, nothing new. I said earlier that it's predictable, and while yes, that's true, what isn't, in this genre? When I say it gets predictable I mean incredibly so. You can practically tell exactly what's going to happen in the next 80 or so chapters, simply by patterns of what's happened previously, and IET's previous works. All in all, it doesn't surprise me that IET dropped it; I damn near did myself. I'd skip over this one if I were you. Just read one of IET's other works, if you haven't, and if you have, then you've already experienced the majority of what any of his stories will give you. <<less

I'm up to date with the translations of all other IET novels, but skipped Swallowed Star at first, since I prefer my Sci-Fi in proper novel form. Reading the reviews and realizing that this is another Xuanhuan with sci-fi skin, I decided to give it a try.

Personally, I didn't expect such crap from IET.

The protagonist, Lou Feng, starts off a decent, mature, hardworking youth that cares a lot about his family. As the story progresses, he slowly (sometimes rapidly) loses any morality, maturity, and intelligence he originally had. His backwards... more>> values and obvious hypocrisy ruin what was initially, maybe not a super interesting, but at least likeable character.

The amount of racism in this novel is intolerable. It starts off with just a bit of Chinese nationalism, but when other space races get introduced, sh*t hits the fan. I won't go into the details (since it honestly disgusts me), but the main gist is that it's okay to ens*ave and treat other intelligent beings as subclass citizens, forcing them to fight wars for humanity, only because they don't have as many strong powers behind them. Not to mention that those wars are mostly the result of humanity's inability to stop breeding like rabbits causing them to look for more territory.

All in all, this is by far the worst IET novel, and the only reason it's getting 2 stars, is that the adventures aren't too bad. <<less

It deserves a 4/5, but I have noticed a trend toward 1 star reviews thus I am giving it the maximum score.

This novel appeals to an audience who has experienced how the pacing and story-line, and knows how the character development and background of Chinese xuanhuan novels is set up. It is not a good introduction into such novels if you are a beginner because you will find as previous reviews have written before that it might be slow in pace, or the character might have unreasonable stats among other... more>> cliche and not so cliche complaints.

The reason why I am writing this review is to address the fact that you cannot read such novels from the perspective of a Western culture. Chinese novels are an acquired taste that gets better the more you sample. It might seems strange at first but by the middle-end of the journey you will realize you have opened doors to yourself that would have been forever lost otherwise.

I Eat Tomatoes is one of the better authors of this genre. He writes carefully and despite the usual annoying quirks most Chinese martial arts novels have (including some occasional unneeded flattery to Chinese communism, which I assume most authors include for censor purposes), he develops his characters very well without giving them some "divine right" attitude. Personally, I prefer his works of Stellar Transformations and The Coiling Dragon more but Swallowed Star is, while a bit more naive in writing, an interesting pseudo futuristic Earth-based exploration of martial arts.

A merit that I should mention of this author, something that strikes him apart from others is how he develops romance into the plot. Most similar novels have harems who are acquired rather nonsensically by the main character, or that minimize the romantic subplot as much as possible. However, this author is one of the few, who develops an almost slice-of-life integration with the action and martial arts. It is truly a wonder, because for the first time we see that the leading character, has the same problems, the same issues, as the readers, which he goes through together with family and/or friends and grows up as a person. Such development is more explicitly expressed in the two novels I mentioned above, but it is still prevalent here.

Thus, I urge other readers to give such novels a chance. And by a chance, I mean at least a third of the way through, not just 20 measly chapters where literally nothing happens. You do not have to start your xuanhuan experience here. Perhaps something shorter would be better at first. But I assure you, I Eat Tomatoes is an author you will want to read more of, once you realize the potential of Chinese martial arts novels. <<less

This novel had a really strong start, with initially great world building, but then it lost me when the story expended in scope, I actually liked the expansion at first, but it quickly deteriorated as it kept expanding rapidly to the point where the size of the world was meaningless and lacked any sort of depth and substance.

This is the second IET novel I read and the second I'm disappointed with, which I did not expect given how highly regarded he is, perhaps his work is just not a good... more>> fit for me or maybe third time is the charm.

Positives:

    • The sci-fi setting, it is an interesting setting for a cultivation novel.
    • The tropes are not as prevalent as they are in other novels, not too many arrogant young masters in this one, at least not in the chapters I read.
    • Relationships with family and friends are well done, tho they seem to be getting less and less relevant by the time I dropped it.
    • Fight were really interesting in the start, tho this too deteriorated with the expansion.
Negatives:

    • World building after the first 400-500 chapters.
      Spoiler

The MC ends up leaving earth and going to outer space and quickly realizes how small his world view was, but instead of exploring the universe, new planets, new races, and new cultures, most of the time is spent inside of a ship or inside a virtual world where distance means nothing cause everyone in all the universe has access to it, and death means nothing so al the battles that happen here are pointless. He is gifted 100 planet and doesn't explore them, he is gifted a galaxy and doesn't really explore it. All the races he seems to meet are not much different from humans and not much about them is explored.

      [collapse]
    • Some important moments seem to get glossed over while other less important moments end up taking way too long.
      Spoiler

He comes back from the dead after saving the world and the reaction to it is way too brief, while training a single move can go on for many chapters.

      [collapse]
    • Conflict resolutions were anticlimactic, with few exceptions. I loved his first couple of enemies, the way they came after MC and the way MC fought them, but later ones were disappointing
      Spoiler

I'm struggling to think of any enemy who was not from earth and was not a lacky who actually died, I think they all escape, or die in virtual space. The only enemy I have fond memories of is the rival squad back on the early days of earth.

      [collapse]
Minor annoyances:

    • Inconsistent morality. I dont mind a dark story, I dont need MCs to be moral, but what bugs me is when MCs talk like they are moral but then their actions contradict them. This wasn't a big deal, but a minor annoyance for me.
      Spoiler

The MC is apparently disgusted by s*avery but buys s*aves, bets on s*ave death matches, and uses some secret technique to brainwash (soul-wash?) powerful experts making them forget any old loyalties and revere him as master, makes them s*aves at a level even crueler than the existing s*avering system.

      [collapse]
    • The training chapters are boring. This is likely just a personal thing as I find this to be the case in most (not all) novels, so I tend to skim through them.
    • Exposition kind of sucks, which doesn't help world building, basically just data dumps every so often with a lot of useless information that could easily be inferred through context.
    • The inclusion of the stock market. A surprisingly amount of chapters keep bringing up the stock market, which would not be a bad thing if it was relevant to the story and not so ridiculously dumbed down, but as is, it feels like it is just there to give the mc's brother something to do.
    • Currencies, too many words wasted away explaining currencies and exchange rates which don't really matter in the grand scheme of things and should really only be mentioned once if at all.
    • Names, this one is more on the translators I think, but the amount of times a name changes is ridiculous, sometimes in the same paragraph the same person will be referred to by two very different spellings of the name. For example "Brolin" and "Bu Luo Lin" are used interchangeably. Maybe I'm being picky, but it was an annoyance and in some cases I legit thought there were two characters and got super confused as to what was going on in the story.

This is a really fresh novel. It's one of the best examples of cultivation and sci-fi being mixed that I've seen in a long while. Of course it has its own pros and cons.

Pros:

-Like a lot of IET novels it excels in action scenes with a ting of humor

... more>> -Unique compared to most cultivation novels

-A pretty developed world though not built up as vividly as some of IET's other novels

Cons:

-This novel has one of the worst romances I've read (even for IET), but for readers who are uninterested in romance it is not necessarily a bad thing

-Unnecessary exaggeration as every sword moves 10 000 000 li and every town has a population of 10 000 000 000

-It still feels very similar to the rest other IET novels when it comes to the protagonist personality

Overall, it's a nice novel to check out if you are tired of the common xianxia, but noting mind-blowing if you have read other IET novels. <<less

So this is my first time reviewing a novel so let's make it short....

Its a Fantastic novel, in the first few volumes that is.

Its starts of in a semi futuristic post apocalyptic world where mutated monsters run rampant, which forced the humans to coop up in protected cities.

... more>> it too has a sense of mystery like how the apocalypse truly happened or why did mutations happen, so it intrigues you to read on.

so after a considerable time reading you reach to the end of the first few volumes but all of a sudden the author dumps you with a head full of information, and just skims upon the previous questions you had which leaves the novel full of plot holes.

and so it begins to become repetitive as hell where you can easily predict what's going to happen. So the rest is all about getting OP and wreaking the bad guys and so on and that's about it

(yea I I know, I know I said short but swell) <<less

I really like the beginning on Earth and truly I think the author keeps the quality if not quite equivalent and a very high level. However once the assumed highest level (undying) is reached I can sense there might be issues as the multiverse idea is introduced. Still the understated romance actually works in this instance and the fact that the M.C gets perks to go along with his talent that are not immediately voided by a greater (and antagonistic) power is refreshing.

Very good novel. It's the only one I managed to follow for 2 years straight. Dropped a lot of novels (cause of slow releases) but not this one. I see people complaining that it's too slow paced but I think it's too fast paced. I could use some chapters explaining his skills and enlightment of the universe. He forgot his family at one point too. Sad.

I've been trying real hard so far, and I probably will still continue to try for until I reach the next translator's work, but first, I just want to give my opinion of the novel so far.

I'm a big fan of the author. I've finished Stellar Transformations and following TNC and LXY latest translations, as well as having dropped TDE at book 19 due to me being a new reader of the genre back then, and having reached the latest translation, I went to other books and never really had... more>> the chance to go back (I'll prob reread it soon). I've had a blast from TNC and LXY, and they are really my type of novels.

So back then, before I started reading TNC, I got so hooked on LXY. I've been to TNC's page here on NU so many times, but I just couldn't bring myself to read it because of the numerous critics about it. After reading LXY (latest chap), I needed more so hard, and so I gave TNC a try and I really loved it.

After reading TNC, I needed more again, so I tried this. Well, things didn't work out that well.

I have no problem with the setting: some few decades in the future with post-apocalyptic feel to it I guess, and I guess some sci-fi here and there.

The characters, they never were the author's best field, but I think that he did a bit worse on here compared to the rest. I don't know why, it's probably because- oh, I figured it out! Out of all the stories I read from the author, TNC, ST, TDE, LXY, they all had age progression. This one didn't. I didn't really care about his crippled brother and his parents. Romance was never really good among his works, but on the other works, I kinda feel that they were more complex and entertaining. Even romance on LXY was better than this, and over there, we had a lot of chance to get to know her because we know her the same time as the MC did. But here? 'Oh yeah, her? MC likes her in highschool, so yeah, how about that?' All there is left to us is just to wait for it to happen, not why it happens because it already happened. The romance isn't the worst part here. It's the antagonists. It's the uncle of the first antagonist, his classmate. And now that that guy's dead, we move on to his captain who survived, f*cking great. Stage three boss.

Another thing that has been bothering me is that the chapters feel so short, or that nothing happens. Well, we had that one chapter where during stalking his enemies, his brother calls him and says that he earned millions. We add the reason how he got it, and Huala~, we got ourselves a chapter folks. I know that I look like I'm exaggerating a bit, but this bothers me. Actually, it isn't all bad to have short chapters, it's just that I don't feel like it's worth reading because what happens really doesn't entertain me anymore.

Now the most important thing here is: it lost the charm of IET stories. Maybe it didn't, just that the translator did a bad job. But what I enjoyed most from TNC, LXY, ST, even TDE, is witnessing how the MC gets stronger and stronger. We have that sense of fulfillment just looking at the MC having breakthroughs. For me, that was the most important part. Maybe it really is in here, but I couldn't see it. Yes, he got stronger by some hundred kg or something, got faster by nm/s, or brokethrough his technique and his swings are now as fast sound, but... how many farts do those count? I couldn't see the scale of progress. Yeah, the numbers are very detailed, but I don't give a sh*t about numbers. He got faster by nm/s... I don't know how fast that is. Or should I go watch that Bolt guy's record on YT and then go all like 'oooh, sh*t man, that's fast!'... really? I'm not saying that using numbers is bad, TNC used numbers but I loved it. Just that here... I can't really grasp just how strong he is, even with numbers. He keeps on getting powerups, but... I still don't get it. Again, this might be because of the translator, but it's already volume 4, 4 volumes of feeling lost. Even if translation gets better, that's already a big part of the story.

I've been complaining about the translation again and again, but the thing is: it isn't really that bad. It's all grammatically correct I guess. But the feel. I think that every sentence is just... I don't know. This isn't necessarily true, I've never tried of it before, but I suspect that it was just machine translated and then edited. That might not be true, I'm not saying it's true. It should just be me not liking the translator's style.

Another thing I guess is the world building. IET is very good on this. It was still good here, just that... it feels like it's trying too hard or something. This is probably because I see Earth as smaller than all the other places the other MCs of the other novels were situated in.

I'll stop here, be back when I reach v5. If I still won't like it by then, then I should just go reread TDE or something... <<less

I absolutely love the early volumes of this novel. It's like apocalypse story meets xuanhuan story, with some futuristic tech thrown in and schools and ranking systems and all sorts of good features. Moreover, the author fully develops each aspect which is amazing. If it were just the first 7 or so volumes, this story would get 5 stars from me.

However, after that it turns more into a xianxia novel (for those who don't know, xianxia novels are like coiling dragon in that they refer to thousand year lifespans or... more>> longer and decade long periods of cultivation or longer). While xianxia novels can be good, it's not what I was hoping for from this novel. I'm also not a fan of the new setting of the novel starting around volume 8. Thus, my overall rating has fallen to 4 stars. I still highly recommend the first 7 volumes. And for some people they might like the later volumes more. Just not me. <<less

Edited: 2 stars and dropped

As an IET fan this is a disappointment that you'll first feel with the repeated Attention all speeches, then poorly done sci fi and then after the MC leaves Earth cultivation and battles start to get lame.

Even though his first novel is Stellar Transformations followed by Coiling Dragon, I think SS is his 3rd work but it feels rough and amateurish like it is his first, though ST is my favourite and a classic which brought us xianxia for better or for worse.

This is the first Chinese novel I have read, and I find it quite bland. The simplistic style may be attributed to poor translation, but it feels remarkably elementary, reminiscent of something a young teenager might write.

I was drawn in by the story's sense of escalating scale and the intriguing concept of different contexts, such as the challenges on Earth and then in a distant star system, creating a tangible sense of progression.

However, the novelty wears off after a while, though there are still sporadically interesting ideas. This inconsistency often... more>> leads me to skip paragraphs or even entire pages, briefly skimming chapters. The narrative suffers from excessive repetition and confusing details, with inconsistencies in numbers and descriptions, such as the dimensions of planets and craters, which detract from the immersion.

Another significant issue is the protagonist's inconsistent behavior and decision-making, which disrupts the continuity of the story. For example, the contrasting scenarios in the 'Blood River World' and 'Demon Note Mountain' highlight a lack of coherent world-building, with the author seemingly introducing random elements without much thought to realism.

Furthermore, the author's nationalistic and racial sentiments are pronounced, surpassing what I've encountered in other works, including those by American or other Chinese authors. The repetitive use of simplistic phrases and concepts further contributes to the narrative's juvenile tone.

Despite these flaws, the novel does present some intriguing ideas, which is why I've rated it two stars instead of one.

TLDR: Interesting power progression ("real" difference in setting and power). Very simple, repetitive and unoriginal writing sprinkled with some nice ideas. Racist and nationalist. Inconsistency 7/10 (there are worse novels). MC is 1.5-dimensional character. Nothing fancy. Typical honorable perfect guy. Is this how Chinese guys think? That would be really sad. <<less

What to say, honestly I don't like this novel it's having a feeling of a normal

foolish man who is very much reckless (ignore it's enemies) life struggle to go to top.

I know it sounds exciting but it isn't the MC in no way special but it's enemies are too damn special

One example I m simply saying about the villains don't worry it's not too much of a spoiler

    • The author basically makes wierd problems for MC for example he have enemies but way too much powerful
    • The difference is like when MC is human capable of flying, his enemy is capable of destroying the entire milky way galaxy..
    • And the obvious irritating fact is that it is said the A.I. which assists MC is the very living A.I. basically it's way too much advanced so much that it can do nearly anything so now u say when an lower level civilisation spaceship enters the earth it didn't even manage to scout it let alone hack destroy etc it only notified when the enemies are above the roof floor of the MC beholding the planet destroying spaceship...
    • U can say the author flaunts the MC power but when it requires the author directly nerfs him to such an extent the special ability directly becomes a common cabbage which u can find everywhere
    • I don't feel anyway the MC is special
    • Not ruthless not decisive, novel is not romantic, early children that is irritating also they are both males boring, MC is not calm, MC is not the one who makes plans ahead of others, no strategy, Well overally I am disappointed.
    • But I will say anyone who is interested in spaceships or spacetravel and god like powers and cheat op MC I think infinite mana in the apocalypse is the best.
    • But since I am V9 let me complete it if I got good things I will share and maybe change the review for now thats all...

I've already thrown this novel away 2 times, and I don't think I'll try it again. The first time I got to chapter 92 and now I drop it in chapter 234. I don't know why it has such good ratings, the only thing I've seen is the typical protagonist without many motivations in life apart from wanting to be strong and that's it (the initial motivation was family poverty and the brother disability, which could already have been solved in the first 150 chaps with the billions of money... more>> earned and the medicine), also the only moments where the author change the POV to other characters is as a way for the author let us know how badass and incredible the MC is ("oh seriously! I can't believe it, he's so young! He's only been training for 2 months!, unique in history!"), added to the poor recurring secondary characters and the slow progress of the plot (more than 50 chapters are the MC trained in an academy for the sake of doing it without any motivation, urgency, drama, etc) is simply too boring to continue reading. <<less

Update V9 C10

This is a great novel to pass time. I've been reading this monster for a couple months now, and I usually read in chunks spaced out by other books. I generally enjoy stories where the protagonist levels up quickly through a combination of hard work, natural talent, and a bit of luck. Luo Feng is one of those classic level up, almost OP protags. A lotta nail biting action, and edge of your seat, epic fights, which of course are raised in scale and proportion with every occurrence.

Spoiler

I still am yet to appreciate their casual use of s*aves. Perhaps if they made them out like actual persons with their own stories, I'd not feel so icked out by it. But, they just buy s*aves all-over the place (most (really so far, all of the time) they're stronger than the MC's so that makes it even worse. Imagine you're a strong warrior who was unfortunately captured by s*avers. You are then forced, through brain implants, to follow this master who can't even actually stand up to you on their own. Now, you have absolutely no choice but to serve this person. Then on top of that, you're dragged to this ass backwards, middle of the sticks, planet (read Earth) where you are stronger than 100% of the population! How would that make you feel as an individual?

Unfortunately, we'll never know what these ppl think, as they're treated as objects to be traded and used, mostly by the MC. Smh. It might be excusable to not develop these characters as they are, in essence, trade goods. Same cannot be said for every other character. The AI is literally the only other character with a distinct personality. Thunder God and Hong seemed to be interesting individuals at some point, but now I can barely tell if one or the other is speaking. His brother is perhaps the only other one who has a life outside of waiting on LF to appear so that they can exist. He has his online trading, which is great, as he has used t to maintain his family on his own for a couple years, but this is now his only defining feature.

I read in some snippets of reviews that Xu Xin serves as only a motivational tool for LF? At this point, I can't even say that about her, as she has no personality whatsoever. Like none. She's not even shown interacting with her super strong, totally should be more interesting, kids. Her most interesting plot point was was she attempted su*cide. It was a real shitty move on her part, and she should not have been rewarded for it. She should have been allowed to age gracefully, perhaps live for a century or 2, but no, they had to make her practically undying (I think?) 🤨🙄

LF has to do things because she was in a certain situation, but really, all the members of his family can be interchanged and the story will remain the same.

I am griping a bit as I'm allowed to do so, but in spite of all the complaints

It's amazing to see Earth's strongest trio climb higher towards the peak of strength

C455

What to say so far? It's really all about leveling up at this point with the goal of protecting Earth (and of course becoming an unrivalled being). Still enjoying the story for what it is. Nothing too deep, certainly not the MC. I honestly cannot pinpoint any kind of personality of Luo Feng. The only thing I know is that he's ambitious and wants to become stronger. Is he funny, shy, stoic, introverted, extroverted, lovey dovey, committed family guy, patient or nah, does he enjoy or play with his kids, does he teach them? I really don't know at all just what kind of person he is. Sigh. But, that's ok. I'm used to it by now.

For a while we actually got a bit of info from one of the s*aves that teaches his kids. That in itself is a whole can of worms.

Spoiler

I still am yet to grasp any kind of reasoning when it comes to s*ave owernership by MC. Though of course I am against the idea of this, he purchased them to protect the earth, fine, who can blame him? He could only get s*aves that were only so powerful, besides, once they reached a certain level, they could in essence free themselves from microchip control. Plus he treats them more like guards than s*aves... acceptable-ish. Then, what does Luo Feng do? He learns a technique to thoroughly ens*ave their souls for EVER. We're not talking about a few dozen or even hundreds of years. We're talking about the possibility of millions of years. I really don't get the author. Every now and again they even talk about how Earth is lucky to not be ens*aved cause LF is strong! I really really don't understand how he's totally ok with doing to others what is seen as not only unsightly, but backwards in his Earthen culture (so we can't blame it on that)

He doesn't spend time with his family because he's training all the time, he's willing to up and leave them, esp his pre teen children, for hundreds of years. In essence, if his family wasn't in the picture, the story wld be the exact same, as they contribute nothing at all, except for his bro who makes money for him. I'm good with that. It's just the casual s*avery that boggles my mind. What is author really doing?

Everytime I read the word laughed after a character says something, I automatically convert it to said... Dropped this once coz I can't get past the translation but now that I'm used to mtling novels, I'm able to read this now without problems.

Reading up to 400, I still can't like the MC. He succeeds in everything he does with almost no setbacks, fights powerful enemies and ends up with no consequence... Plot armor is so obvious, my young self would have loved it. Ahhhh.. I'm old.
