In a hilarious and sweet xianxia romance set in Ancient China, Lu Zhao Yao went through life living ostentatiously in every way possible. She lived her entire demon life in a loud and brazen manner, reigning over legions of demons, and yet——just before she was about to retrieve the sword of the ancient demon king and rightfully claim her spot on the throne——she died.

In the most quiet and unobtrusive manner possible. How? By accident.

Mo Qing, one of her lowest ranking lackeys at that point in time, had killed her after he retrieved the demon sword and unintentionally unleashed the sword’s demonic aura onto the heavily injured Lu Zhao Yao.

Her quiet and untimely death, coupled with her firm belief that Mo Qing had sneakily betrayed her by lying in the shadows and waiting to strike the final blow and reap all the rewards, nurtured a heavy grievance within her. Lu Zhao Yao refused to head to the underworld and reincarnate, hanging around in the human world in her spirit form.

Lady Luck, however, had not completely abandoned her.

One fine day, a female disciple of the Immortal Sect (Zhi Yan) fought with her childhood friend and banged her head onto Lu Zhao Yao’s grave. To Lu Zhao Yao’s utmost delight, she was able to possess Zhi Yan’s body for short periods of time after this.

Thus began her journey to avenge her very own death by destroying Mo Qing——and, in the process, resume her rightful place as the King over all demon sects!

As one of my favorite author, Jiu Lu Fei Xiang rarely let me down with her works, including this novel. I really love this story although with the author usual style, the story was bounded to be funny yet also heartbreaking at the same time. Don't worry, this story had a happy ending, at least for MC and ML. The other characters weren't that fortunate though, none of them ended up with the one they loved (except for 1 couple but the price that they had to pay were quite... more>> high).

I also enjoy Sonrisa T.N.T's translation since he/she also provided snippets of the drama version in his/her translation. I haven't watch it yet because many said that the drama version was a bit draggey compared to its novel. Nevertheless, I still like watching Xu Kai's face (he's so perfect as Mo Qing). <<less

4 stars - it's alright, but not spectacular

The best part is definitely Zhao Yao. She's unashamedly a badass demonic cultivator who couldn't care less about anything except her own people. She does have a kind heart, but you'll never get her to admit it, and she cares a lot about her reputation as 'evil demon lord'. She's also quite dense when it comes to feelings and is as good at getting into trouble as she is to solving it (probably better at stirring up trouble and then let Mo Qing... more>> fix it).

I liked her friendship with Zhi Yan quite a lot, whereas I found Mo Qing kind of underwhelming as a character. Maybe because I got a bit bored with the fact that he's pretty much OP and can solve any issue and also have undying, complete devotion towards Zhao Yao. Which is obvious to everyone except Zhao Yao herself.

The plot was alright, but nothing special, and many of the side characters (especially the villains) felt one-dimensional. Would have been interesting if the novel had dived more into the hypocritical nature of the righteous sects, or how the misunderstandings and animosity between righteous sects and demon sects came about (even though this is a standard trope in xianxia so probably Chinese readers don't need an explanation).

Basically the author is fun to read for her crazy female leads and their antics, and that's kind of it. I still prefer Seven Unfortunate Lifetimes, but this was an okay read and Zhao Yao was fun. <<less

4.5/5. Jiu Lu Fei Xiang is a really well known author and this novel does not disappoint. The premise of this novel is right up my alley (more like an addiction I can't seem to overcome actually) and I loved the MC and ML together.

MC is a bold brash character who wants to live her best life by getting revenge, but makes sure to keep things entertaining while she's doing it. She is on the oblivious side, but that's a given for cnovels unfortunately. I honestly felt really bad for... more>> the ML, feel like he was trapped in his feelings for the MC and never lived a life for himself. But his devotion was heartwrenching and sweet.

Overall not mind blowing, but a fun read. <<less

Wonderful story I finished in two days. The love between them is so sweet. They are very natural together. The stuff she do is hilarious. I am so happy for them. The story was painful and blissful at the same time. ML really dotes on the FMC. I love them so much. Other side characters also adds nice flavor to the story and kept it very interesting. I am going to watch the drama for more fun.

I didn’t watch the drama, as they drag it alot. But the novel is good. Love LZY character as a demoness and fun showy way. Her encounter with people after her “death”and her background really a good read. She not really bad but she is badass. Lol. ML is is cute. He really loves MC, his sweet longing and waiting is really heart wrenching. But am glad they have a very good HE.

Othe side characters were great also especially Shi Ci, really love this badass cinnamon bun. The others cps... more>> also very endearing.
I really appreciate translator hardwork and her little snippets scenes on story, solidified the mind when reading, makes a great reading experience. Recommended read. Thank you <<less

Don’t be tricked by the high ratings :]

Don’t watch the Zhao Yao drama either, it’s a complete waste of brain cells, if you did already, you must understand y I feel this way. I feel like the story had such good components, but it became messy when the author try’s to mix different plot cliches in and the story just feels like a mediocre fanfic of some sort, I can’t even the ending :]]]]
