The Legendary Mechanic

What do you do when you wake up and find yourself inside the very game that you love?

What do you do when you realize you that you have not only become an NPC – you have even been thrown back in time to before the game even launched!

What will happen when our protagonist’s two realities coincide?

Han Xiao was a professional power leveler before his transmigration. Using his past life’s knowledge, Han Xiao sweeps through the universe as he prepares for the arrival of the players. This is definitely not your typical transmigration novel.

One of the rare chinese novels where the protagonist isnt just a cardboard cutout. He has a consistent personality and is often pretty damn funny as well. What makes this novel great aside from that is imo the world building and the setting in general. So far the author hasn't disappointed me with gradually building up the different locations and factions in the universe. What I can also really appreciate is that it is pretty clearly defined what kind of damage the different stages of the power system can do.... more>> So I never had any trouble imagining what the characters were actually doing. <<less

October 2021: Finally, finally, finally. I am so happy to say that I have finally finished the book fully translated. It's been such a long journey getting here—I still remember back when I read the few translated chapters and couldn't stop myself from reading the raws for the other 1k chapters. I caught up with the raws and then spent each day looking forward to the author posting yet another chapter. And now, years later, the book is not only completed but also fully translated. I've read this book in... more>> part or in full almost at least 6 or 7 times by now—whenever I got bored or didn't know what to read, I could always count on this book to keep me sane. If we say that this like Bun-hit-dog's Black star series, I'll probably be one of the loyalest viewers. I have such an appreciation to the author for making this masterpiece. Thank you for keeping my past few years interesting.

~

March 2021: Feeling a little sentimental as I write this. This book has stayed with me for so long... over the past few years it's been the only book where I've read it over and over again and not gotten bored. At this point I could list out every event in the timeline. Han Xiao, Hila, Aurora, Ames, and everyone else in this story have been a part of my mind for so long, I almost can't believe that the story is over. I'll definitely be back when everything is translated. I love how human Han Xiao feels at the end. We've been through so much. Almost makes me less disappointed about how open-ended the end was. One of my absolute favorites, with The King's Avatar.

~

Chapter 1000ish: It's been quite a while since I last read a light novel, and this was the first one I picked up recently while browsing Webnovel. I had actually had this one on my PTR list on Webnovel for quite a while, but the translation speed was just too slow and there were barely any chapters available. A few months later, I came back to a hundred or so chapters, and happily started reading it. It didn't disappoint. Over the past few days, I've even thoroughly MTL'd all the available raws.

Love this story. I love OPness, which the MC does have most of the time, and humor, which the MC does have as well. While I would enjoy having some romance or more interaction with the harem that he builds up, the lack of romance does not detract from the story. There are often annoying info dumps, and sometimes the panel info takes up a lot of space, though I do personally enjoy seeing some numbers as reference, even though I do also feel like they're pretty arbitrary. I love the trope of the MC transmigrating into an NPC, I love the fact that he knows everything that's going to happen and can thus use this information to his advantage, I love the funny interactions between him and players and himself and the other NPCs. I even love when they go focus on a third party and use that to praise the MC and his deeds. This story seriously has every cliche and trope that I enjoy. Why is this story still ongoing? And why are there only 849 chapters? I need more! Not to mention that they ended on a cliffhanger. A big one. I'll be following this one. <<less

Here's the thing; no romance, whatever. No harem, whatever. But, ah, MC is always surrounded of beauties and talented beauties at that. Especially since they all do seem to like MC no matter what. Hey! But, it's not harem, nor romance, you hear me?!

Vanilla bullshit.

After a while of good introduction to MC's character and a little of world-building, the MC changes to a princess of a typical japanese work while everyone around him would be shocked, astounded, stunned and speechless as long as MC does as much as a sneeze.

From... more>> a cunning, calculative and determined to get the sh*t done, to a 'oh no this person is more useful for me alive' ret*rded out-of-nowhere twist.

It all became (except for a few more boring and tasteless characters) like this:

-"Well, you've tried to kill me! I'll kill you, you bady!"

-"Wait no."

-"Okay, nevermind. Why would I kill someone that could be of my aid? I NEVER KILL."

Done.

Then, there are some other scenes like for an example, the reason why I can't bother to deal with this vanilla-disney'ed shit.

One of the girls that MC saved and that is a 'pure angel', gets threatened to kill and then shoot to the head, only to be protected by her sister that is kinda powerful.

Then, afterwards, the 'pure angel' is like: "Oh, pffff, it's fiiiiiiiiiiiine. He was just being impulsive~, also, even if he r*ped me that was aaaall fiiiiiiiiine~ jeez *insert phrase that makes no f*cking sense, isn't even well-thought but still manages to be a 'fatal blow' to her sister*.

Jesus f*ck, no, god no, please.

I don't know if it's because he received ban warnings or worse, for the author's very own decision. But whatever the case, when close to the first 100 chapters, it just becomes your regular brainwashing dumbsh*t chinese novel; that's just disappointing. <<less

Extremely questionable high rating. Not terrible yet not worth such a high rating.

Extraordinarily terrible dumps, usually people call these info dumps. This is not accurate, basically hundreds to thousands of words without worth in so many chapters that serve literally, metaphorically, metascientifically, or imaginary purpose. As it's basically author word padding to prove their readers are utterly ret*rded. Examples of this is long, extremely long list of stats and stat growth and other data that is talked about yet its like a blind person describing a painting they saw at... more>> a museum, complete nonsense with only purpose to insult the readers intelligence with terrible iteration of word padding.

Plot armor, is bad. No difference between 1% and 90% so why pretend or add more word padding by trying to say odds are against the MC when he has no failure.
Spoiler

story starts off where MC is lucky yet less than 100 chapters in MC basically just gets everything handed to him and thus still basically "fails" but has "unlimited" resources so in end doesn't actually fail. Fake failure is terribly bad writing.

[collapse]
Thus power ups don't feel exciting they feel like worthless word padding that is getting harder and harder to stomach.

MC personality is terrible. Like he's good one second, bad another, cold hearted right now, heartwarming the next. MC feels like an extremely annoying person as author can't stick to anything without any real indications of why he has these mood swings.

In the end sad part is, could probably continue listing few major problems in story or writing if I looked harder. Or large number of small ones but let's not kid ourselves. Still worth trying to read even with these problems. <<less

Such an all around great novel. There was never really a point in which I found myself being able to put this down or really ever being frustrated at any events that occurred, except for the boring player league that’d happen every game update. The pacing is great and the side characters even more so. Haven’t read anything this good in a long while and it’s quite refreshing to say the least.

Loved the novel.

If you want a calm, calculative, OP, lawful evil, no boring romance, steady pace, a bit selfish, army building and cunning MC and story this is for you...a sci-fi MMORPG with exceptional story and worl building with a touch of mystery. You will definitely like it...

No repetitive plots no s*upid enemy no bullsh*t righteousness

My best novel read of all time due to a unique story to a reincarnation in game genre. Good humor, great shamelessnes, and OP powers. Just wished there was a bit of romance or just MC messing around. Would ve given him some life instead of working on machines for 150+ years or something.

Completed: 1463 chapters + 1 "chapter" of author's afterwords.

Finally a novel with an ending that doesn't suck, and it's even pretty good. Everything was logically explained and all deep mysteries like "how come MC is a player that became an NPC and went back in time?" were explained in universe without plot holes.

There's still more that could've been explored, and some arcs got cut short or completely scrapped. (Though it still made sense with how the author wrote it, and it's understandable since Revolution seems to have been a... more>> touchy subject in China while CCP was cracking down on novels, RIP Reverend Insanity/Daoist Gu.)

But all in all it was a good read throughout and it even had a satisfying end, though I think there should've more of an epilogue or side story, maybe one of those infamous filler beach episodes you see in anime x)

Well, there's definitely room for more/sequel to continue the novel after the "end", so you could say it was an open ending. But I agree with the author's thoughts on finishing the novel. Sure there's still stuff to explore after the "end", but that would be another story, another book.

The story definitely ended when and where it should.

I don't plan to spoil anything, but just think about all the xianxia novels where MC ascends and pop up in some new higher world or whatever, and then he just keeps doing that forever. Well basically the "acension" to a higher world is the end of a story, then a new story starts.

That's why endings for those novels are usually bad, they just keep going and going until the author can't write anymore.

But yeah, ending was good, and the novel shouldn't have continued past the final chapter (besides epilogue and some side story chapters)

Though I definitely think that some content before it that got cut, the novel should've been another 100 or so chapters longer before the end imo. <<less

Completed the whole novel.

Really loved this one. One of my favourite. Being high level tension is common in novel but this one is little different.

MC is intelligent, care for his people and always have a plan.

The ending is quite good. But I am feeling sad because I won't get to read anymore. Really I want more after story from author or a sequel if possible.

Legendary Mechanic is a little different than most stories I have read. Basically, a moderately-famous gamer is reincarnated as an NPC in his favorite game, before canon starts. However, he still has the player game-system with minimal changes (he doesn't respawn, doesn't have a level cap, and has a screen for managing NPC-Player interactions).

Pros:

  • Decent MC, with intelligence and forethought without being omniscient.
  • MC is not distracted by Harem Shenanigans, despite many women being obviously interested in him. (MC might be asexual)
  • Interesting NPC-Player interactions
  • Large world (universe) with multiple competing factions, and disharmony within those factions
Cons:

  • Author fails at astronomy. There are habitable planets that don't orbit stars, and he uses lots of strange terms such that I don't quite understand the scale. You understand that it is big, but not how big.
  • For a while, the MC goes through pseud0-companions pretty fast. Recently, the NPCs have "Caught Up" and are regular companions and high-level officers in his group, while the PCs serve as more perspective characters since the MC has reached a very high level and they have not.
Notes from other reviews:

  • One guy was talking about the MC gaining XP from giving missions. This is false. The MC can use XP as part of the price when selling items and knowledge to players, which he uses to get a lot of XP. The MC also has a limit to how much XP he can give out "for free" each day, going beyond that limit will actually cost him XP.
  • Lots of people talk about how there is no company that makes the game, or Game Master who comes and fixes the game after the MC derails the plot. This has not been explained, granted, but it has been hinted that the Game World is an actual alternate universe, and the Players are coming through an anomaly in space-time that manifests as a game on their end.
  • The MC is scummy is another common complaint. My response is, not really? I mean, he is a little ruthless, but it is a ruthless universe he is in. He might be a bit manipulative and never make a deal where he doesn't benefit, but if you want to see a scummy protagonist you have to read some Cultivation stories.

Wait, what?! I have not written a review?

I follow this novel ever since it had 160 chapters. I once pushed 160->322 mtl (it is that good!!) but it wasn't perfect reading experience so I had to wait months for translated chapters. I am reading this one daily and it's currently my top1 daily read (never skipped a day in the last half a year, not even Lord of The Mysteries could hook me on daily basis) and I still get excited!! The good thing is that it never fails to... more>> deliver, and so far the more chapters the more interesting and awesome it gets.

It is one of the best chinese novels for sure. There's a copy with similiar mechanics called "I am legendary BOSS" but its execution, plot and MC are crap compared to this one.

You can check out my other reviews and decide whether to believe me. But you're missing a lot by not reading The Legendary Mechanic. <<less

An above average novel, the author has created one of my favourite novels on this platform. While it is built around the typical reincarnated into a game world scenario, it handles the story in a logical way. There isn't any of the usual betrayals by friends, waking up to their surroundings or any world-ending beauties. It really is just a normal gamer who was dropped into a game.

World building is a huge part of the novel, we get to understand the various powers in the world and how they relate... more>> to others. There also isn't any single entity that is made out to be a straight up enemy just because. There's always a reason behind the founding of each organisation and the MC goes on to explore all of that. Plot in the beginning is progressed through quests, though that does fall away quite a bit after the MC becomes more powerful leaves his world. His autonomy increases a lot across his journey, which allows for a great degree of freedom in where he can go and what he can do. Much like gaining power in real life. The only issue I have is how the game developers in the original Earth don't notice an npc going and doing things that aren't in its' programming, though the issue is hinted at in later chapters.

Overall I can't recommend the novel enough. <<less

Basically read about a chinese power leveler exploiting a game NPC´s and its players as an NPC, from giving quests to make the players work for him, sell low level items to take the money they receive from doing quests to also teach them basic skills to take the experience they receive for his own use.

Lootboxes and DLC´s included

Let me just get it straight (5 stars)

This novel is hella lit...... let me tell you why

  • Korean style writing.. if you have read some of the famous korean novels (Emperor of solo play, Seoul stations necromancer.. etc) you know its about witty comedy, intriguing interaction and great plot build up
  • Main character, hell yeah thats exactly a reason why I like this novel... the main character is an outrageously amazing personality...... and also the fact that he is lucky & at the same time unlucky
  • Something new, and thats truly something which I loved about it because its a whole new concept..... MC is literally an NPC of a game.... goddamn
Well don't drop it

Pretty good novel I have to admit, the author has more imagination and flexibility in his writing than most Chinese authors out there for sure, at the start of the novel we get thrown right into a suspenseful scene where MC freedom is on the line and I appreciate that sense of urgency.

The world building and system of powers of the novel are its strength, we get a wide variety of abilities, a gigantic universe that we slowly discover with the MC neither too fast or too slow growth, I... more>> will give a lot of praise to the author ability at creating new main lines and subplots every game update and also for giving the enemies some wits and not being completely dumb like most other CN

The bad sides I would reproach to the novel and that annoyed me is character development, its severely lacking and you can sense it if you binge read like I just did in the past week, most of the principal characters are hollow and rarely the author shows some of their personality potential but its so few and far in between ; just a few lines every 20 chapters isn't enough, its disappointing especially as we grow to like those characters but fall short and their presence disappear after a few chapters like most CNs, also the MC is already stuck in this reality for a few decades and he still treat everyone like NPCs when he should know better, , Lackey, Melo Aurora, Hila, Dragon Seat etc are supposed to be the MC friends, he spend months or even years in their company and we don't see the bonds they share, maybe its there maybe its not, we don't know because the author doesn't write any more than a few lines now and then, anyhow its pretty depressing how times flies in their world and MC is as lonely as ever, without much consideration for NPCs other than their worth in the future version and how they can help him survive, help him survive for what, if hes stuck in this game reality for the rest of his days then whats the point of surviving if he doesn't consider it real and acknowledge NPC as people, call him The Legendary Sociopath and it would work, the author wrote it weirdly and poorly but as its his first novel maybe he can learn from it and improve in the future.

On a lighter note I understand the lack of romance and often encourage it cause most authors don't know to handle so its not a problem for me but the author is throwing too many hints and teases, he should decide on romance or no romance *shrug*

Anyway I give this novel 4 stars despite the lack of character development because I'm a sucker for good plot, vast and original world building, rational sense of growth for MC characteristics, a variety of powers and strong OP enemies without face smacking involved, the fights gave me a "Zombie Knight" feel (probably because of ashes ability) and all thats enough to entertain me, and like some other review said, this is probably one of the best transmigration CN novel we ever had so far *cross fingers for a good ending* <<less

I enjoyed it more than I originally expected. The pace is relatively fast and the MC isn't a total a**hole, though he certainly has his moments of being a monumental d*ck (like almost all Chinese MC). The MC also seems way more interested in gaining power than anything else so no harem, though there are several beauties around him. He also has the very overused "bad luck" trope but remains incredibly lucky despite it only being 1.

the middle part is all about the MC gaining power and the players have... more>> less importance, other than a source of exp, making him very disconnected except when it came to the pro games, which he watched through his system. It starts turning around in version 4 when he starts treating them like people again instead of just leeks to suck dry. Mostly, they remain leeks in his eyes.

I liked most of the story but I will admit that I found the business espionage parts particularly irritating and so ended up skipping a lot of chapters through that part. I know it can't be a Chinese novel without scheming, politics, and back biting but that is my least favorite parts of the story. There was some heightened nationalism and propaganda but its not as in your face and blatant as some other stories.

the one thing I still don't get is why the game devs and GMs never show up despite this clearly self-aware NPC running around breaking the game and changing the programmed scenarios. at the moment I would say it's a solid 4, despite those skippable chapters. <<less

Good points:

If they haven't poked your eyes out, you haven't read the novel yet.

Bad points:

Would a telescope or a microscope serve you better in looking for them?

To be honest, besides gunshot sounds arriving before the bullets and some minor Chinese nationalism (I repeat, minor), there's literally nothing wrong with the story yet.

Its consistent. Its entertaining. Its interesting. It keeps you on the edge what's going to happen next. Its addicting!
