This novel would have much better if they did not tie down the main character, Jiang Chen, with trivial drivel. Jiang Chen is like a reincarnated dragon - bursting with limitless potential. However, we need to read through the equivalent of him scrubbing feces and handling disposal waste at just about every twist and turn of the novel, which does not make for a good read. We could have read a novel where a powerful mind breaks through to the heavens and soars, conquering trials and hardships alike - instead... more>> we're stuck with MC practically being a janitor in the sense that he's perpetually trapped dealing with menial tasks and duties that far under utilize his potential.

Because of these aspects, the novel not only become tedious to read, but it also lacks any real sort of tension or suspense, since MC can easily deal with the conflicts thrown his way. The problem is the sheer quantity of these conflicts which makes reading SOTR a chore.

Also, just to nitpick, one of the main villains gets unjustly recycled to be used again at a later date. The villain was on the verge of death but apparently these pests and mosquitoes have the same amount of plot armor that you'd expect from a main character. <<less

Unusual intro. The MC reincarnates into the body of a young duke who was caned to death for farting during an important ritual. The MC before that had lived for thousand’s of years as the waste son of the Divine Emperor. Unable to cultivate, the MC studies the whole time–about medicine and wudao. Now that he’s somehow gotten a new body that can cultivate, the MC is using all his stored up knowledge to quickly make it back to the heavens, while also making sure he survives and helping his... more>> new father out. He possesses stronger mentality than most MC’s so he’s not easily provoked (+1 for any xianxia). I really think you guys should give it a shot. <<less

Since I've finished reading it, I had no choice but to drop my initial rating from 3 to 1. This is a classic case of slapping the reader with rushed ending (more accurately 1 page ending)

I'll start with pros as the list is shorter.

1) it can help u alot in passing time (haha tricked u). But it's also a redeeming point. 2300+ will take a month or couple of weeks when u had nothing.

2) MC is normal. Don't look at normality as something abnormal as it's rare in... more>> CN novels.

3) harem is unique as only grandpas can apply.

And that's it. Yeah that's it. Other than that, it's not gonna give u anything

Big thanks to translators for translating it very very slowly? but steadily.

Now let's move on to cons- I'll list 3-4, which kills the grey cells.

1) it's like u booked the ticket for night train but somehow rode the bullock cart, then the bicycle n suddenly found urself warping through space. Yes, the story is slow as hell, then gets normalised n when u find ur self comfortable with it, it suddenly ends.

The first realm alone took 1800+ chapters, for the rest u can divide urself. First 500 chapter are about MC's journey from just a human to a simple strongman. Last 50 chapter transforms an ant into superman.

2) pesky characters: every character introduced in this novel has clear inclinations. One is professional in licking MC's ass while other wants to simply become the stepping stone.

Character 1: brother jiang ! How should I say this but if u ask me to get through the sea of fire or mountain of swords. I'll go blind folded.

Character 2: brother jiang! This grace, how will I repay? If u ask me to get through the sea of fire or moutain of swords.......

.

.

Character 100: brother jiang! I know everyone has l**ked ur ass but I will do the same as I too have been only granted this monologue in the whole novel.

From origin realm to even clan lords of velurium capital to island lords - everyone uses this monologue.

MC's friendship is all about benefits. Every side character who was helped by MC promises to help him but never gets the option.

Every strong character is a paper tiger except MC. Velurium lord peafowl is the prime example of this or the island lords. They had strong background n surrounded by mystry but after 100 or 50 chapter they'll become bystander with no role in the story.

Women are just similar to other novels where they start out as super talented, strong, ungettable blah... blah... to marionettes, who can't even think without the Mc's help.

Villians: they're hell of a talkative ppl. They're like women gossip groups without time limit.

Villian 1- you animal!! Who do you think who are u? U lowly animal blah blaha blah...... after 3 hours sleep

Author: he meant jiang chen is an animal due to humble background, calling him lowly animal showed his fear blah blah....... after 4 hours of author explanation....

Reader: can we get to next fight plz... author I'm not dumb that u have to feed me what dumb animal means.

Higher the cultivation, lower the iQ level.

3) fake tension: author creates fake tension in middle chapters where some strong guys from myraid island arrives.

It really became interesting at that point as tension was mounting but what happens next is a bit*h slap to reader. MC gets plot armor award of the year with super strong golem race oscar statues while evil grandmas casting magic spell on the IQ level of opposition leaders.

Bam... bam... whossh... MC's a one man army who literally wipes out everyone while sitting on the goan beach, smoking author's plot armour.

The antagonists are worth a single shot only. The demon race which terrified human race race n nearly wiped them out, got themselves wiped out just by MC himself. When u can one shot the main villian,
Spoiler
[collapse]
then a story can't be saved.

After 1400 the down fall started n 1600 makes it worse at 1700 u can literally quit...

4) MC is universe: he's the cleaner, driver, gardener, doctor, pillmaker, array master, martial artist, omniscient, omnipotent,..... n u can add whatever u want to this list. <<less

This novel...I absolutely feel sorry for anyone in this novel, if they were to be put on earth with common knowledge... They would immediately be labelled mentally ret*rded or become homeless. Usually the MC would find some treasure at the start of the novel or find a master but with this he's already a master above everyone alive. If you're perceptive you must be wondering why this novel has 2400 chapters when with MC's knowledge 200 chapters would be too long of a novel. The biggest problem with this novel... more>> is how someone jumps 1 meter and people praise that person like they solved the universe mysteries but if MC jumps 2 meters it's slightly praised and forgotten, then rinse repeat. If MC is suspected of cheating because nobody saw him jump but some system recorded his feat, then idiotic people call for his head and chapters are wasted and schemes are revealed when MC could simply jump and prove his 2 meter feat.

#1. Like Emperor's Domination, the MC here is also over a million years old and mentally is no different than a 15 year old. For someone that old, he drops to other people's level in an argument or if provoked, when any level headed person would avoid 70% of the conflicts in this novel, yes, 70%, author is cheap enough to just drop a conflict that MC cannot back down from 20% of the time. If you expect a calm level headed person who does things with logic... Just expect an arrogant kid that is slightly above average in IQ and who keeps losing IQ points for more chapters when it comes to conflict then suddenly becomes 10000 IQ at the conclusion of the conflict. This is to make the people opposing him rise up then he suddenly drops them down.

#2. Author pulls stuff from the depths of his ass, as to why MC hasn't powered up in a short amount of time and MC always powers up whenever it is necessary, this is always under pressure and any gains before any conflict is never enough to instantly deal with the next threat. Techniques/skills determine how strong you are and somehow MC isn't able to become OP with his knowledge because of a flimsy reason such as it isn't suitable for him now or his body isn't compatible... Really? He was from the top of the cultivation realm and he really doesn't have techniques to step on people on his level without author pushing MC to suddenly power up after being suppressed while these 'true geniuses' get inheritances from this lower realm that puts them on MC's level or higher.

#3. Nearly every time brainless people step up to challenge/humiliate MC for s*upid reasons and they never stop to analyse the situation, leading to MC educating them. This isn't because MC is 'smart' but it's just that author passes the idiot ball around. For example, someone of the same rank as MC tried to order MC which is something only royalty could do and this was while royalty was present, which gave the MC the opportunity to lecture them by starting to ask them about their possible rebellion or why they placed themselves on the same rank as royalty.

#4. MC from the start doesn't care about who he makes an enemy of and even sometimes purposefully tries to because he enjoys it like everything is in the palm of his hand. This is from his disdain, arrogance and confidence from being in this lower realm and yet

#5. Author creates a situation that ends up in MC making an enemy out of some big shot, most of these are cringe worthy because of how forced it is. For example, MC went to a shop to obtain an item, then suddenly some young master came along that wanted it then author dropped some story of why this person wanted it, which was because of a girl he liked, this lead to more young masters coming to obtain that item for the girl then MC finally obtaining it thus making an enemy out of every young master there. Why suddenly this girl needed this specific item? Why this young master came now instead of earlier or later? Why MC needed to even speak with them when he could have solved it immediately with his medallion? <<less

Edit: I gave 2 stars accidentally, my rate for this tr*sh is of course 1 star.

Complete tr*sh. After reading a record of a mortal's journey to immortality, grasping evil or legend of the great sage I cannot even stand this kind of tr*sh xianxia anymore.

1 - MC is supposedly millions of years old but acts like a little teenager most of the time.

2 - Full of arrogant young masters, and face slapping that gets sickening lots of the time. Apart from a few, almost every male character is trying to... more>> kill MC for some s*upid reason, that will make your eyes roll :)

3 - Forced plot, the author does not know a thing about writing fiction, he forgets about lots of characters and skills, martial arts, etc. Most never is mentioned again. Most of the time MC pulls some skills out of his ass to win and then a few chapters later that skill will be forgotten for good.

4 - If you are looking for romance or harem, again it is complete tr*sh in those aspects too.

In short, if you are too bored and have nothing to read, and you like underestimated/underdog all-knowing MC face slapping almost every male character in the story for some ridiculous reason then you gotta read this. <<less

This novel has a great plot at beginning. But things get really disappointing later on. The storyline is too repetitive. Same things happen again and again.

Spoiler

The MC starts his journey in a kingdom where he is ridiculed by all. Then he takes part in a tournament among younger generation. Beats everyone. Get to prominence. Visits a secret realm. And all of sudden a rebellion/invasion appears from nowhere. Then the MC quells the rebels/invaders all by his own and becomes the most prominent person of the kingdom.

[collapse]

And after all these things, he founds that the kingdom is the worst among an alliance. Now, he goes to one of the most powerful kingdom. And all the things mentioned above is going to happen again. He become the most prominent personality.

Then after all these things he found that the alliance is backwater of a domain. After gaining prominence there (note that all the things written in the spoiler box has appeared here too) he founds that the domain is a back water of a larger domain. (Now the occurrences in the spoiler box again). Which in turn is also a backwater compared to an island. (Same occurrences again). Which in turn is backwater of............

This novel is a bitter disappointment. Worst one I've read. Problem is the start was really good. The first 1000-1100 chapters are good and fun to read. After that it starts to go downhill very fast. It has an incredible number of plot holes, illogical points, errors, unnecessary story lines there are so many faults to this novel its unbelievable.

All in all if you read the first parts and think its good don't. It makes it even worse. If it was bad all along it'd be easy to drop. The... more>> first half being good makes it worst because you are interested and invested in the novel and want to learn about it. But the terrible writing makes it a torture. There are insane amount of lose ends, illogical things, best is author forgets stuff happening :D. Forgets about characters he writes.
Spoiler

The ending feels rushed insanely, the author can't decide how strong MC should be, there are stuff changing. Like Author writes one thing then suddenly couple chapters ahead it is written as never happened or differently. His explanations and settings doesn't feel right. Like he says Divine Dao is immortal but people who are Divine Dao or above worry about aging (best I can remember is the ones in the tower needing to be sealed to survive) or on that matter lets say the 2nd or 3rd guy on tower gives him puppets and he says they have %40~70 of my powers but they have like early celestial strength when he is divine dao (there is no way the % of power could be related to Jiang Chen because he uses these puppets when he is like Emperor /Great emperor realm and they have celestial levels of power) . Novel is a martial arts novel which is almost none existing at the 2nd half of the novel everyone is only using treasures. He makes MC OP in some stuff like Divine Consciousness or Dao of Pills but on Divine Consciousness lets say when he is Great Emperor it is said he has Celestial level Consciousness but he is troubled by Great Emperor level difficulties on this point which should not happen. Or Dao of Pill is after the first half only about LVL up Pills. There are only lvl up pills when Almost 1/5 of the novel is about Alchemy. WTH?

[collapse]
These are some random things I could think of its not even 1/10 of all problems. And these are just inconsistent points, plot holes or errors.

Above these there is the story building which is horrible.
Spoiler

Author keeps introducing unrelated materials to the story which is misleading. He prolongs unnecessary points. The characters that should be in the story briefly are kept hanging on which builds up to now you have to follow all about hundreds of characters because author doesn't know what progress is. I think the only characters that didn't keep getting updates were his 2 friends from Eastern Kingdom. Other than that unless author forgets about the character (Which he really does. Think about it. He forgets characters he wrote about.) he keeps re introducing them to the plot constantly for no reason. And biggest sins of all is the ending. He kept building Demon Calamity War for 2000~ chapters. It ends as soon as it starts. There is almost no struggle. He deals with Demons so easily its baffling why 'd author keep reminding about Demons for 2000 chapters. Then there is the last 40-50 chapters on Heaven Realm. Lets put aside it being short and all. Its the end of a novel where all lose ends should come together and finish right?According to this Author it shouldn't. He keeps introducing stuff into the story at the last %1 of the novel it feels like it should be atleast 400-500 chapters to the finish. Worst of all in these last 40-50 chapters there is close to 20 filler chapters. Like there is 6 chapter streak which could be summed with a sentence and there is no story progress only some chatter between unnecessary characters. So many things about ending doesn't make sense. Like there is this God King that sees JChen once and trusts him with his life threatining secret. Or JChen swears on heavens for a girl that he 'd not tell her secret. Then he goes on to tell which should result in him dying. Then there is this comical plot how Celestial Emperor lost his seat to GodKings but God Kings has no way of battling a Celestial Emperor. How the hell would that happen? The person responsible for all of this dies in like 5 chapters after being introduced. Then JChen becomes his Celestial Emperor on his own Realm and has struggle with other greater realms. So if he is having this kind of trouble Why there was no other Celestial Emperors or greater Realm people from other places attacking his father's realm when there was no celestial emperor?

[collapse]
I could go on forever this is just from a few things mostly from the end because I just finished. I don't really remember problems from the first half because there wasn't that insane amount of it but after 1100 it starts to show up a lot. And after 1600 its like every chapter has either an error, plot hole or things that doesn't make sense.

If you didn't start or you dont feel too attached don't read this novel. The first half is really good and you probably won't drop because of that reason which makes it all the worse. Hope this Author gets what he deserves for wasting such a good storyline. <<less

So, I'm trying a new format for my novel review to make it more objective.

Sotr is a pretty disappointing read for me so I dropped it around 1600, maybe I'll pick it up again in the future but for now I think I'm far enough for a review. I'll break the review into several points, every points are rated between 1-5 stars, every novel start at 3 stars and goes up or down depending on the pro/con. TLDR at the end

1. Story (2 stars)

So, this is actually the only... more>> part of the novel that I like. The background is interesting with mysteries surrounding the MC rebirth, it made me curious on how it will unfold. In my mind it has so much potential, but it was plagued by word padding and filler chapters that drag the progression to a turtle crawl. At 1600 chapters we're still at the first plane, with maybe around 200+more. The novel end at 2374.

Another thing that is such a shame is how inconsistent the author can be with an established rule/plot point. The story will sometimes 'forget' or 'change' the rule that was set 100 chapters ago to fit the current situation. It sucks really, at the end I'm giving the story part 2 stars.

2. Main Character (2 stars)

The MC is a person with constitution defect that made him a mortal but luck into birthing in the house of a celestial emperor (very very high cultivation). He ended up living millions of years, spending his time reading in the grand library and concocting pills before his death and reborn as a normal mortal with a normal body

Now, that's awesome right? The MC is on the just side, calm, and collected while armed with a million years worth of knowledge and experience. But he is arrogant as hell, putting himself on top of a pedestal because he's lived a more higher live when he was a celestial emperor's son.

Doesn't sound right? Yeah, you're correct. The MC actually shows humility and treats his friend and his enemies due respect. But ON CERTAIN circumstances he went nuts with his arrogance, this is for me is a very bad 'character breaking' moment.

Let me take some example (No major spoiler)

  1. At one point MC was passing a territory and was blocked by the territory's henchman, MC was asked where he is from and answered with "Why do I need to tell you where I'm from?". Of course these people are bad at the end of the day, but the MC is not exactly hiding his origin either way at that point. It's blatant provocation that creates conflict and you'll see this kind of thing a lot from the MC
  2. Another example is a bit of a spoiler
Spoiler

MC is faced with basically a god (at that certain point of the story), he's in the middle of his sect friends and no one, NO ONE in the vicinity that the MC know can save him or the sect from slaughter. He can choose to join or die, MC chose death while throwing spiteful remarks... It's not like he got death enmity with that bad guy nor do they practice any evil method, he even make peace with this sect at the end! MC was of course saved by one of his girl, not surprising for the reader, but the MC don't know sh*t at that time

[collapse]

The most frustrating thing is that this happened only on certain point where the author need it to escalate. It also include things like s*upid move, 'vanishing' important treasure, and forgetting previously known experience. It's not like the MC is bad, it's just that the author need the MC to be bad for the story to go into crisis. Alas, it impacts the score, 2 stars.

3. Side characters (2 stars)

This section includes the supporting and the villains. Nothing special really, but author does put a bit of character to some non-important support and the important one that will stick for some time has a bit more character building. The villains are pretty much 2d, typical...

My caveat with this is how those character buildings are pretty much wasted because the MC runs a one-man show. There's this one big war between sects, everyone gathers and at the end of the day, MC is practically the only one that made a move and finish the war. It happens a lot, all the limelight are on the MC when the climax is reached while the others watched.

Another minus is how characters or events appear when MC needs it. It's pretty standard really in a novel, but it's so blatantly revolved around the MC that it feels artificial. Sometimes there is no logic around it, some spoiler below for example, quite major, but it really is a good example.

Spoiler

At one point human domain will be invaded by other species (not demon) shortly after the MC unites the human domain, and it was led by Empyreans. The funny thing is how Empyreans on the enemy side are part of a sect/leader position, while in the human domain, ALL of them are recluse, ALL, not one less. Silly? yes, because I imagine if the Empyreans are part of humanity's leadership then the MC got no chance to unite it when he is not an Empyrean yet, and if the MC is one, then he'll bulldoze his way, basically cutting the chapter counts a lot shorter.

[collapse]

2 stars again

4. Battle (1 star)

This also includes cultivation, techniques, treasures, etc

Now, I thought that with a walking library MC. we'd have something different from the usual tropes, I was wrong.

The author conveyed things in a very vague way. Cultivation is basically just an accumulation, there is no amazing cultivation techniques or foundation improving technique. Treasures are not properly leveled, it just heavenly something or ancient something, the clearest one are talismans which is basically a one-use cheat key for the MC. The techniques are also surprisingly shallow, there is no "high level techniques that is trained from early", or "trump card techniques that can one shot enemy".

What happen from that is that battle becomes a festival of mauling treasures, which so happen that the MC has several in custody and of which the author keep telling us that "the MC only able to utilize a sliver of its potential". There's rarely any accompanying arts for the important treasures that the MC possessed, and if there is, it's not for long. The dagger that can break the stars? forgotten, Thunder like elemental sword? Barely mentioned.

It's not like this at the beginning, but as you read further, it becomes more apparent.

And the battle itself is quite hideous, the novel itself is full of word padding, and the battle scene didn't escape this which make the flow break in the middle.

This is a typical example, the opponent will enter followed by (already known by reader) introduction on his background and past grudge with the MC. Opponent will make one move and the crowd will chatter on how powerful it is, then MC counter followed by the crowd chatter on how shocked they are that MC can counter. One chapter can consist of only that, 1 exchange.

I really want to give this a minus score because cultivation and battle are one of the highlight from a novel like this, but I can't since 1 star is the minimum. 1 star it is.

5. Ending (3 stars)
Well, I haven't reached it, though I'm not reading a lot of good things about it. Still, benefit of the doubt, 3 stars

TLDR

2 stars, a bit helped by the (unread) ending I believe, but still a poor reading experience.

I was excited by the introduction of this novel, but really, disappointed. I write this review in 2019 and there is this one article that depicts this, it tells about how CD Projekt Red are s*upid by making quality games compared to the Chinese companies that monetize its games heavily... This novel is the monetize games. It's almost 2400 chapters long that can be easily cut by 20-30% by taking out the unnecessary parts.

It honestly has a great story background, The MC is not that bad with an interesting cheat, and side characters got some proper attention. Alas the author didn't really put a lot of effort into thinking a proper way to get from Point A to Point B, which often resulted in a 'world-breaking' situation. It really frustrate me as a reader to see the components of the novel going out of the rail to compensate the author's lack of effort to plan the route to the next plot point. Add this to the excessive amount of fillers which also make the battle flow choppy, I don't really recommend this novel for reading, especially not because of how long it is. <<less

I was enticed by the tags and some comments. Don't be like me.

Pro

    • MC isn't so bad, he's kinda dumb though, lacking the strategic thinking I'd expect from the reincarnation of a 1 million year prince. At least he's calm and not a complete psycho.
    • The world seemed interesting.
Con

    • Repeated repetitions while trying to remind you of things already repeated in a preceding repetition. God I hate this cheap way of adding words...
    • Ridiculously arrogant and cruel antagonist young masters who don't understand the expression "thinking before acting".
    • The worst forced plot armor for an antagonist I've seen in a while at around chapter 100.
Dropped.

A complete waste of my time. seriously.

It starts out very good, you get very good MC, side characters, friends and enemies. but guess what? they're all shoved one side later and never talked about.

All the characters you like will be written off for no other reason besides that they are not the MC.

... more>> The entire novel is basically nothing but tournaments. he goes from country to bigger country to sect to bigger sect and joins tournaments after tournaments. the novel should be titled "sovereign of the tournaments".

The MC cheat is supposed to be knowledge, but yet he is able to slap people above his cultivation levels to death.

The love interest are pretty good, but again, he only get 3 of them. the rest are made into his followers and never mentioned again... <<less

It's a pretty good story. The MC is OP but not unbearably so- ie he still has to put in time and effort to get to where he wants to be. Author introduces the idea of a harem in a way I really don't mind, and the action is interesting. The characters were quite 2d initially, but the author seems to be getting better at making villains more than just evil incarnate.

The reason I give 4 stars, though, is because these are the best translations I've seen to date. The... more>> vocabulary is stellar: no made up words, no I'll fitting phrases etc. Even the idioms are translated into English equivalents. And the grammar is impeccable. All in all, it's just great to read! Hope this translator picks up other works because I'll be looking forward to those too! <<less

SOTR starts out as a rather typical xianxia, but it's main point is its characters. To most people, the slower plot is a turn-off since they want to read the exciting part right away, but I believe this is setting a good foundation for a more stable reading later on.

The slower plot is also due to political problems and giving side characters to grow. It is not to the level of ISSTH but it is an enjoyable read, and even in the hundreds of chapters, is still in its... more>> "setting up" phase. There are cliches of course, not like we can really avoid them and some of it does make you wanna face palm at the author.

The MC does not do things with brute force, but the villains do feel a bit s*upid sometimes... It's not the ultimate read, but it is still pretty enjoyable. <<less

Sovereign of the Filler Arcs would be a better name for this novel. This novel has a lot of filler arcs in the most boring ways: tournaments and hidden dimension adventuring. Instead of a good flowing story, the author decided to fit the whole story up with tournament after tournament. It's the cheapest way to lengthen a story. Especially if the tournament doesn't give much important treasures to the MC and is merely used as a plot device to put the MC on a pedestal.

Premise of novel is interesting. Ancient monster that lived for literally millions of years, equipped with most of knowledge under heaven, get reincarnated into random body.

First dozen of chapters where excellent. So much that they hooked me for another 200. And honestly I just wasted my time, blindly hoping that story will get better.
Spoiler

It didn't.

[collapse]

Thinking about it, protagonist had some pros at start, yet they soon disappeared. Here come cons/flaws then:

    1. First under the heaven mindset. Often MC act arrogantly when he shouldn't, but many times just stand like block of wood, allowing other do to as they wish.
    2. Intelligence. Author tried really hard at beginning. Then he scraped it all, and turned EVERYONE into ret*rds. MC make dubious choices, completely not fitting his *years*. Sometimes author try to soften novel by adding comedy, harem building with interactions, therefore more then often MC behave like stereotypical japanese isekai protagonist.
    3. Enemies. Constant, never-ending stream of enemies. One down, another appear. Honestly at one point, during random fight (where he was defender), he was interrupted more then 8 times. It was just RIDICULOUS.
    4. Cultivation. So MC decided to NOT cultivate heaven defying methods/arts, yet constantly b*tch about him being weak. Sigh...
    5. Weakness. Above + fact that author, when his plot armor expire, constantly grant him new *powerups*. And he is weak beyond belief nonetheless. Like few *tr*sh* (by his standards) practitioners from *weak* mortal kingdom, IS MORE THEN ENOUGH, TO FORCE HIM TO FULLY FIGHT FOR HIS SURVIVAL. Then he get out of it unscathed with new *powerup*. Yay.

I really liked tales of demons and gods (except for late releases) and thought to give this one a try. The story is kind of good and you will like MC but there are some major plot holes.

There is this thing called swearing on heavens or "heaven's Oath" where u swear on heavens and tell truth or give your word and if u break your promise or lie you will be punished by heavens. And yet many people just keep blaming MC for things he didn't do or doubt him... more>> very often. So when such flawless lie detecting system exists all he has to do is take heavenly oath and everyone can know that other person is lying and cheater. But that never happens. They use heavenly Oath for small things but never to resolve big matters. Practically speaking if such a world exists where anyone can prove their innocence then most of the quarrels can be resolved but here they fight for petty things.

One more thing is that this whole novel can be completed in 1000 chapters instead of 2.7k. If you do decide to read this novel then its ok to read just sentences in quotation marks (i, e only dialogues spoken by characters) and you wont miss anything cause everything is explained by characters and then author explains again. For every dialogue spoken there is running commentary form author which you can skip. You will understand what to read once you get inside story. You can complete all chapters with very fast pace.

Overall the story is OK except for plot hole. But the way the story is written is very bad. <<less

The story is complete garbage. Generic reincarnated dude somehow knows more than anyone yet acts like an idiot. It's a big deal when he does something competent. It's either a tournament, a pill battle, or some internal family troubles. Also each chapter is like 90% filler. It's not even good to pass the time, because I get impatient and want to skip to the end of all the garbage.

That said, the translators are top notch and come out with chapters regularly.

The best way to read this novel is to let... more>> 20+ chapters save up and try to read to a good stopping point. Don't try to stay on the bleeding edge as you'll just be pissed that absolutely nothing happened for the past 5 chapters. <<less

Really... This one had so much potential, but it ended up as a trainwreck beyond salvation. I couldn't give it a 1/5 because I quite loved about half of the arcs, while the other half I either hated or just disliked. It did bring me a lot of joy even if it s**ked at times... But chapter 336... Chapter 336 made me and many other people drop the novel.

Many arcs were great, I kinda liked all of the first 80-90 chapters, but then the author suddenly decided to bring out... more>> the big guns and without finishing the trial he just went on to full-blown rebellion and stuff like that, and after that it all turned into a repeat of ass kicking and getting his ass kicked. Then we always see the whole "Oh, I killed almost killed the one I wanted to kill, but at the very last second some bastard comes to save the guy in question, but now I somehow managed to overcome my own limits and almost killed the guys who came to save the day, then they get saved by the next weird guy that pops up out of the fcking woodworks... Then when the MC is about to be killed, some other random dude comes in to save the day for the MC, but the enemies doesn't die..." cycle.

Really, this novel is worth reading, at least to chapter 336, but it suffers from a lot of problems... Such as:

Spoiler

1: A lot of dragalong tr*sh who will never be useful and are there just to bother the MC and get power boosted/carried to the end of their days for no good reason. They also get almost no attention so it's worthless to even have them there.

2: A lot of minor events all the time that takes a long time to solve while the more interesting stuff gets short chapters. Like proposing marriage for his underling or chapters about how this or that worthless guy or girl thinks which has no worth whatasoever to the plot.

3: The novel has the most annoying plot ever in some regards. 60-80% of the novel is about how the MC helps random worthless people and his worthless dragalong tr*sh or saves them from danger, it's as if the tr*shy followers are only there to bring about trouble and leech time, effort and resources from the MC, they are never useful, at all. He hardly ever does stuff for himself and just saves people all the time, everyone has practiced the class "damsel in distress".

4: The MC is millions of years old, the greatest alchemist ever to exist (kind of) and has an information bank of everything under and above the heavens, but he never acts his age. He doesn't use his knowledge properly, he doesn't act as he should with such an age and it's repeatedly mentioned how he can keep so calm only thanks to the skill "boulder's heart" instead of his own willpower that he should've trained over millions of years. He's also suspectible to women despite being so old, a millions of years old ancient dude is interested in 20 year old younglings who can't even be considered as fetus-level existences compared to him, the MC once said it has to do with his body being that of a young male or whatever, as if that should matter when he's so old. He also gets surprised way too easily and his mind gets affected by stuff way too often. He also acts like a brash youngster in most things, even though the author tries to claim that he's reasonable he's actually courting death...

5: Plot holes all over the place, like not being able to cure an aphrodisiac which afflicted him despite being the greatest alchemist ever... He could also see through a rapist (that he had just glanced at a time or two) at a very low level of training from all small hints and even just the body language was enough even though the guy had superior disguising skills, but in a trial later on when he's way, way stronger with his senses heightened to ridiculous levels, he can't see through a girl who just wears a mask, even thinking she's a guy... That's just impossible, but of course the author doesn't give a sh*t about forcing everything.

6: The girls are some of the most annoying ones I've ever seen. All the potential harem members are pretentious, arrogant, annoying and right out obnoxious ones who look down on the MC and burden him in various ways, even to the extent of endangering him with their s*upidity. Even though they get snubbed and gets the cold shoulder along with getting friendzoned, they have a creepy stalker mindset that will keep on following him, attached like the pests they are, and never leave him even though he has no interest in them. They force him to accept it even when he didn't want to. At chapter 336 when many dropped it, along with me, one of the stalker girls had stalked him into a trial, dressing like a boy, and when the MC got afflicted with the aphrodisiac, that he somehow couldn't cure or identify despite being the best alchemist under the heavens, she offers herself to him and he proceeds to ravage her all night out of fcking nowhere (no hints at romance at all before that). This girl was also the most annoying and repulsive of all the harem candidates. I didn't read any more, but it seems she's going to be a harem candidate and might even get his child or something. It crossed my bottom line by far and made me, along with many other people, drop it.. It also seems that the MC got a sudden case of ret*rdedness because he couldn't identify that she was a girl and still didn't realize who she is. Now we all know that the MC is probably going to fall in love with her or just take care of her later or something since he's so upright about stuff like that. Forced and illogical with plot holes all over the place.

7: The author almost never explains anything properly, be it alchemy, cultivation, skills or anything else like circumstances around his reincarnation or other stuff. He also tries to be very mysterious yet fails miserably, making it purely annoying instead. This author isn't really a good writer overall...

[collapse]

There are a lot of other flaws to mention, but I can't be arsed. Just know that you're in for pain if you expect too much from this trainwreck. The romance is especially bad and will ruin the novel completely. I still feel that the first 335 chapters might be worth reading, but might as well not since it's such a waste of time to stop after that. Let's just put it like this. This novel is similar to Martial god asura if you exchange the endless cycles of carnage and cultivation to saving peoples arses all the time. I have to say that I believe martial god asura is somehow even superior. Both novels are garbage, but at least MGA is enjoyable garbage with a fast pace that gives the readers what they want while killing everyone annoying and not putting much focus on the romance (Which is good, because the romance isn't good there either, but at least it's better). We also don't have to deal with an author that chose the "reincarnated super being" concept yet can't live up to it. There's hardly anything more annoying than knowing that the MC should be super OP and awesome in all ways just for him to disappoint again and again by not living up to his age and experience. The author seems to forget his age and knowledge all the time which is really irritating since you sit there and compare the MC to the image of what he is supposed to be, so you find a lot more to complain about since it gets so riddled with plot holes thanks to that.

I usually love the whole "reincarnated with the experience of a previous life where you were the best of the best" type of story, where the MC dominates everything and properly acts his age... Dragon-marked war god and emperor's domination are two novels which do this well, but this author just sucks at it and should save his own face by not trying to do something he's not capable of. They say that characters will never exceed the authors intelligence, at least not without a lot of holes and inconsistencies, and this is extremely true. This author should go for a simpler approach and not try to do all the more requiring stuff like this... Because he screws up too often.

Read it at your own risk. The translation is great though, so if you have nothing else to read, it might be a good choice even if it's annoying. <<less

This is the Novel I love the most but also hate the most... As someone whose read how this Novel is finished. When I look back at this story..I'm not very satisfied. This story is sorta complicated mess? It does go downhill around 700chapters or so..

---I love how the MC is intelligent and manipulator. He acts c*cky and I like it. He has the right to do so as the Celestial Emperor Son! But the way the Author uses him is just... bad. He's supposedly knows all this Knowledge but... more>> it sometimes feels like its just a waste.

---The Author ideas are just brilliant! Simply amazing. But he sucks at writing a good constructed story. He does a lot of stalling and unnecessarily stretches Arcs a lot and adds a bunch of s*upid stuff. Make up your mind Author!
Spoiler

I can name a lot of things that happen but ill name only one. MC comes back to his Kingdom only to find it being taken over. Characters got killed. Wow so you pretty much ruined everything you builder up in the first 100 chapters! You've been foreshadowing the Kingdom Ancestor and he only appears once just to die! Goddamit what was all that Tension for then? What was all that build up momentum for then? the Ancestor would be a badass character just to appear and die like this?! Writer does this a lot..

[collapse]

I just dont like how the Author is random like this...

The Romance is not bad. If you like Polygamous Relationships you will love it... but I just can't accept how things go in the Romance.
Spoiler

The Romance is cute and darn adorable in some moments. Seeing the MC have father-daughter times.. with Dan Fei. Also Huang Er mysterious girl who shows up in the first Arc [obviously main heroine] despite being main heroine she rarely shows up half of the series. The mysterious foreshadowing she gave as the Heroine was good idea but randomly just popped up! I wish Author was more Organize. It was cute how she fell in love with him... she always wanted a guy to sing with her and when the MC does she cries.. it was a beautiful moment. I almost even cried. As for the Princess Gouyu and Zithuro.. Author is just cold.. they were in the Story right off from the start! So why does the MC have to reject them like that? She's loyal and long for you since before you even got big. She knows you wont accept her but still chooses to be by your side even if as a Servant. She knows your to far to reach and so what? Dan Fei is weaker then Gouyu so why not her too at least?!

[collapse]

Seriously this Author is just... oh well. I've read worst. Compare to half the Wuxias I've read this was not bad. I seriously am looking forward the Author next work. I hope its better then this! If its not ill be disappointed <<less

I've read a lot of good quality novels (WNs and English novels) of late, and was feeling nostalgic and wanted to switch it up by reading a novel in my junk food list. This novel was basically exactly what I was looking for, as it has the typical starter pack of:

    • MC has a cheat like advantage (in this case he basically knows everything like in Library of Heaven's Path)
    • MC is reborn in the lowest possible position of his sect/country/world
    • MC has a more righteous personality
    • Accelerated weak to strong path where the MC is generally of a lower cultivation than his peers due to a later starting point, but has a stronger foundation + trump cards etc
    • Pretty much every pretty girl is into the MC
I like these type of novels for relaxing because it's generic enough that you can literally put yourself in the MC's shoes and it thus feels like a mindless power trip. Although I wasn't looking for some masterpiece, it pleasantly surprised me on more than one occasion.

Good Points:

    • Really interesting political dynamics for the most part
    • World building isn't too bad
    • There's actual justification for the MC being extremely lucky (an even better example of this would Paragon of Sins on WN)
    • Translation quality is exquisite
    • Character building isn't bad
    • Fights and cultivation are acceptable
    • MC actually uses his brains for the most part and comes up with really interesting ways of solving problems rather than acting like a ret*rd
    • MC builds genuine connections with people around him
    • MC is surprisingly super loyal to his Dao partner unlike other novels where they'll add everyone to his harem
There are always going to be little issues in massive novels like these, but a few items warranted mentioning.

Bad points:

    • Inconsistencies. I can't remember off the top of my head anymore but there are things related to his abilities or items that don't match later on.
    • Pacing. The first half of the novel in terms of chapters is actually about 75% of the actual word count. The chapters quickly became more bite sized and some things felt a bit rushed.
        • Spoiler

We don't really see much exploration of the other Ten Sacred Lands, nothing in the other provinces beyond the boundary steles, none of the planes in the otherworldly battlefield, and I think a lot more time could've been devoted to this. Not really blaming the author much because this novel is gargantuan and I can't imagine not getting tired of writing it.

          [collapse]
    • The side in side characters stands for sidelined. Although the initial relationships with the MCs companions are built up nicely, the feelings we as a reader get end up crumbling because of the MC's rapid personal growth in strength, which means he can no longer be with them. It's somewhat expected all things considered, but it does make you feel a bit melancholic and wish there were at least other people that joined in on the MC's journey at similar power levels.
    • Dumb logic. Most of the time, everything makes sense, the MC makes great choices and comes up with elegant solutions. There are other times where some things are done which make no sense at all. A specific example of something that doesn't make sense though is:
        • Spoiler

Heavenly oaths. They are literally SO underused that it pisses me off. Why is there not a standardized way of making transactions or promises using oaths? If they're so binding, how is it acceptable for people to brush it off when asked to give one? Why are people sometimes disregarded even after giving a well worded oath? Even putting that aside, the oath itself doesn't make sense. What are the conditions to give one? We see an example of the subordinate sect of Ninesuns make an oath not to reveal the Herb Garden or his sect will be destroyed, and when he actually breaks it, the sect starts getting f*cked by lighting. Why can't you make an oath with your enemy as the condition? For example, I could make an oath saying: "I will not touch this rock or else <insert greatest enemy> will get plowed by 300 ascended goats", and then proceed to touch the rock. Basically, this whole thing isn't well defined and is under used, and is also the biggest plot hole IMO.

          [collapse]
All that aside, I still really enjoyed this novel. There is some rinse and repeat with competitions both martial and pill, but none of those arcs really dragged on for very long so I didn't mind at all. To summarize, I knew what I signed up for going into this and that's exactly what I got.

Pros: great beginning. The idea of the story was nice too. I like when the MC is sure of what they have to do.

Cons: what many other people mentioned. Repetition is everywhere. Some chapters just made me frustrated. The author lost control of the measurement in the middle end, with the speed of development for everybody being flimsy.

Anyways, I read to the end. I miss concrete and consise plots like Coiling Dragon and Warlock of Magus World.
