This novel is a stellar example of how to write an intelligent coherent novel. The MC is not physically strong but is surrounded by people who are, and he recognises their talents and makes use of them. The storyline is not a bunch of mismatched crises intended to act as filler until the author wracks their brain for further ideas, nor does every woman fall in love with him when they meet him. I recommend reading this novel, even if it is long, you will love it and it will... more>> keep your attention. <<less

This is a good one, if you like worldbuilding and no actual harem - this is the one. Started great, clearly rushed end, but overall still good.

Pros:

Interesting world building, scales very good, overall pretty logical without any major leaps.

... more>> Characters. Main cast is fine, character growth, old characters not forgotten etc. For me the stars of this novel is side characters for some reason, their POV's is the most entertaining thing in this novel for me. Their changes in lifestyle and aspirations was a treat.

Technology is not omnipotent. There is common isekai trope where MC bring a gun in the world and dominates it. It's not without a reason, but with such a head start any difficulty disappears. Here difficulty scales pretty good and some battles MC clearly won just because other side just can't adjust this fast.

Cons:

Ending. Not the worst, but not quite satisfying, very common problem of Asian novels.

Harem or not harem. I felt author couldn't decide what he wants to write at the start, so we have all witches kinda like Roland, but in some strange way and they don't care about any other man, which is usually harem trope, but Roland kinda about mono/duo and everyone fine with it. Just feels strange, it would be good if others find their partners or something like it.

Spoiler

World scale and world building. We have other continents, flying lands etc, but whole story in small corner of the world, Roland early in the game stronger than all human kingdoms combined and demons popping out just from nowhere. I would have prefer some more diversity in human civilization, witches usage etc, or more about other races. But whole novel is about standoff between humans and devils.

Pretty good series but I also feel it drags in the second halve. And I could only read so many hundreds of pages of nation building before I want to rip somebody's throat.

Also don't expect much from the harem tag, this series barely qualifies.

Amongst the ocean of repetitive Chinese web novels about cultivation with zero originality this one is a breath of fresh air. The main themes are mystery, discrimination, supernatural, seinen and mainly an incredible Slice of life where they tell us from many perspectives of characters that advance with the plot and have their own and diverse personalities to see the changes of town / city / kingdom in the improvement of life conditions that the MC performs with the help of magic (nothing incredible, at first it was used mainly... more>> to melt metal more easily and it is slowly advancing with the new needs), he is a transmigrator with extensive knowledge of mechanical engineering and acquires more information as the novel progresses from another source that I will not mention because it is a spoiler.

Do not get carried away by the harem label, the MC is surrounded by women because in they world only they can have the probability of awakening magical abilities, but having a good relationship with most of them does not mean being romantic, so far the MC only has 2 companions and the one who joined later did so through the consensus of the two parts, so I would not consider him so much in Harem BS.

So, if I loved the increbile construction of the world, the colorful Slice of Life, the mystery of the world of dreams and the romantic subplot so much, why do I give it 4 stars? Well in my opinion the ending could have been MUCH better, I feel that the last 50 chapters were exaggeratedly fast, so much so that even before them, more secondary characters were being added who would tell their point of view of the new inventions such as the armed railway, planes and the fight for territories against the demons, the theme of the third race that mutated and escaped to the sea, are completely canceled and it advances directly to the end of the novel where the last revelation about the world is quite weak and more the resolution... oh god I hate the last chapter. <<less

Not the best novel I have read but not the worst either. Plot was pretty interesting at first but after a while it started becoming lame. Cuz no matter what the protagonist never fails and I don't think he has faced a minor failure either. Everything started dropping conveniently in the protagonists lap. Need electricity? A witch have power of electricity. Need to separate some hard to separate (rare) elements? Boom! A witch just happened to awaken that ability. Everything is just too much convenient for the protagonist. And tbh I didn't liked how he introduced firearms without even thinking for a second. Sure his situation was pretty dire and all but still.... it feels like he lacks normal conscience a modern day citizen is supposed to have... but hey! It's a cn novel can't ask for much anyway. But the thing that killed my mood is how tf does he know how to create a literal nuke? Or I think that is what he's thinking of building anyway. Then there's the FL who is a extremely beautiful and a peerless genius. She can literally suggest upgrade to machine of modern world just by reading some books. Lol it would be a little bit believable if she was a person of modern world and interacted with machines but nope. She doesn't need any of that cuz she's a genius. It just feels lazy writing on author's part tbh like he's trying to get away from writing a bit more believable plot. Good thing about this novel is although there aren't much of a world building but most of the characters are pretty well written. Unlike most cn novel where side characters are forgotten within a few chapters this novel just doesn't throw em out although unnecessary to the plot they get their share of writing.

Overall the novel can be fun to read as long as you don't think too much and focus on enjoying it the only thing that ruined this novel is lack of any tension. Cuz we already know no matter what the protagonist is always gonna succeed.....

*Sigh* guess I'm the weird one ti want to see protagonist fail......

Started great, middle parts are also good, but this ended terribly.

First act focuses around kingdom building. Story introduces multiple characters and witches. Author would build their character and strength little by little. You can feel the story is alive.

Middle parts. MC being a genius weakling, he stays away from frontlines and focuses on strategies, well not exactly war strategies but making more and more technological advancement. So it can be a bit boring, but war is shown in multiple perspectives. Some perspectives are from random characters that would only appear... more>> for a few chapters. But story moves on even without MC. At this point, you would realize that author will never stop introducing more random characters.

Ending parts are a bit all-over the place. Honestly it kinda goes downhill, specially the last few chapters are terribly confusing and boring.

Overall it is a good novel. It deserves the popularity it has. Although the ending is a bit disappointing, it can be counted as a proper closure.

Other notes:

- So many named characters and unnamed characters. Most of the chapters will revolve around their POV to give us a view of the kingdom. Though if kingdom building usually bores you, stay far-far away from this webnovel.

- MC is smart and open minded with a heart. An ideal 21st century engineer, but in my opinion, he is a bit... boring. <<less

First 3/4 quarters of the novel is amazing, love the technology side of it even though sometimes it's abit hard to understand.

But once the whole dream world, realm of mind and god stuff start coming in together it really drags the story down alot.

Amazing novel, I've been delaying reading this, but I never thought that I was in for a good surprise and able to give 5 stars to this novel

This is an Isekai kingdom-building novel, pretty standard except for the fact that the MC got no power, like seriously, the MC won't get any action, no power-up, no cultivation.

So the MC got reincarnated into a medieval age kingdom where he was the fourth prince and was vying for the throne. And since he is an engineer, he used that knowledge to modernized... more>> his territory. The twist here is that there is magic involved which will be introduced early in the form of witches.

The story is mainly about the MC surviving and delving into the mystery of magic while his kingdom keep growing due to the technologies he introduced.

As in most (proper) kingdom building novel, there are a slew of side characters and this novel is quite exemplary in its story telling and character building. You'll get multi POV chapters which is quite unusual in Chinese WN, which resulted in a lot of character buildings. The side characters in this novel is actually interesting and has their own color although it's shame that the villains doesn't get as much care as the allies.

In relation with the story telling, the author's pacing is quiet good too. Although some said that the ending is rushedm, personally, I find the story to be pretty engaging, it's admittedly slow and grew quicker toward the end, but I find myself enjoying the progression instead of getting too bored or rushed by it.

There is romance in this novel and aside from the MC, the side characters also got their own romance. It's pretty interesting, side characters are definitely one of the strongest point of this novel.

The battle is fun, There's a certain charm seeing modern weapons butchering cold weapons and as the tech progressed, the battle dynamic changed, thus preventing a rinse and repeat battle.

The ending is quite meh, it's simply an ending to the story.

If there is a weakness to this novel is that the fact that some chapters can be very confusing. As like most novels, the main mystery will be veiled, but the author is quite bad at it. Some chapters, in order to be mysterious, will give a lengthy complicated explanation which doesn't really make sense and hard to be deduced or fitted into the world building. Instead of making the reader thinks about it instead leaves them confused. Thankfully the ending explained things even if I had to read it slowly to understand it fully.

Overall, this is an enjoyable novel, although be noted that it's a different kind of tropes from your usual wuxia novel where there is cultivation and a lot of power ups. The pace is slow and the MC will be a ruler instead of soldiers. But if you enjoy a kingdom-building novel, this is one of the best I've seen so far. <<less

I really liked this novel for most of the chapters I read but unfortunately just ran out of steam at around the 1100th chapter. Full disclosure my main reason for stopping has to do with the romance in the story, which I'm aware was never really one of the story's strong points.

Spoiler

I'm so tired of Nightingale's feelings being dumped into a garbage fire every time. The story isn't really a harem; there's only two interests that Roland has feelings for. Unfortunately he isn't willing to pursue only one woman and that really leaves poor Nightingale in the doghouse for at least like 600 chapters (I will not be finishing at this point so I don't really know if it gets resolved). I think initially the polygamous relationship was actually being approached fairly well, Roland and Nightingale were on the same page and Roland discussed it with Anna so everything was above the board. Unfortunately it just stops there, Anna says she'll deal with it (?) and then has a secret conversation with Nightingale that the readers dont get to hear (It's implied the whole time if not outright stated that she was okay with it on some level) and the issue is just never mentioned again other than hundreds of chapters later there's like one sentence about how Roland remembers he never found out what all that was about but then he gives up.

So what happened? There's a multi year gap where nothing happens between Roland and Nightingale other than him like taking a glance at her thighs, did they both forget all their feelings or did the author? To make matters worse early on in the novel Anna tries to sleep with Roland before their relationship was official because she was afraid that in these dangerous times one of them might die and it would be s*upid to not share their feelings now and regret it later. DESPITE this Anna, who supposedly accepts Roland and Nightengale isn't willing to give Nightingale the same courtesy despite the fact that the latter is literally in even more dangerous situations on the front line with even more dangerous enemies than ever before. It just seems hypocritical to me.

I do have a soft spot for Nightingale, compared to the milk toast Anna. I mean Anna is great and all but she always kind of seems like a flatter character. She's got the strongest magic than all the other witches, she's smarter than all the witches, she's the most important manufacturer of all the witches, but despite that she's kind of boring and doesn't get a whole lot of screen time considering her supposed importance. I think Lightning and Maggie are on screen more than her.

Anyway romance rant is over

[collapse]

There is a certain beauty to a platoon of knights getting mowed down by concentrated heavy machine gun fire. Even with my other gripes I will admit that I never felt this getting old, although one of the strange things is that his enemies intelligence networks are so bad that literally none of them have any idea how strong guns are until they've been genocided. This never really changes even later on in the novel.

There's also the problem with the story increasingly turning into a technical manual on the specifics of complex machinery and governmental policy. I'm not even sure if everything written is correct or just presented as correct so that a layman such as myself can't call them out on it. It felt like by the time I stopped 30% of the chapter is dedicated to these thick dry textbooks about subjects I really dont care about. Feel free to start skipping if you notice this yourself; they never contain anything actually relevant to the story.

You may also notice a lot of plot armor going on. For a story with like 100 different perspectives you'll see through you will rarely ever see anyone important dying.
Spoiler

Making the second witch collected able to heal all but the dead might have been a tad bit overpowered, though I guess looking at Anna she's not much better in that regard

[collapse]
On that front there are also too many perspectives for me. I won't claim I have a good memory but I have never had a problem keeping all the characters in a western based novel straight until now.

Ultimately it feels to me like the story was a little too long. It gets harder and harder to keep a story interesting and cohesive the longer it gets in my experience, and these thousand of chapter long web novels are a good example of that.

It's not bad, worth a go even if you don't finish it just because it's a fairly interesting gimmick of guns in the magic dark ages.
Spoiler

Also it doesn't sound like it but I swear I don't really hate Anna

There is an enemy in his "dreamworld" who he spot pretty easily but despite the obvious clues, he still has some doubt and while it is extremely dangerous to let her stay here, he does it without even monitoring her. Also, I hate it when a character resurrect, death should be permanent or you lose the suspense.

He made so many right choices and he must be a dummy here, I was really disappointed, it was so close for a 5 stars. Even the obvious plot flaw of the too broad knowledge of the MC was not so dissatisfying.

Best web novel I have read.

It lives upto its promise. The world building, city building, strength gathering, making a trusted team... everything is done well. The romance is not main focus but decent I would say. The MC being OP is something you have to deal with. Although its not about power but knowledge. The enemies are actual people with their own life goals. Sometimes the enemy becomes ally due to mutual goals. There are many characters and they all have their own moments, thought process. They mature over time.... more>>

The story is enjoyable from the start. You dont have much boring time or filler. You just keep reading and blend into their world. I honestly felt sad near the end, I wished that their story would just keep going. <<less

Great world building, and you really feel invested in the characters. Romance is only a sub plot.

Only downsides ate there are WAY too many characters by the end. So I found myself skipping MANY chapters on randomly introduced characters (still didn't detract from the story and overall understanding).

Really becomes a metaphysical journey of the mind and reality by the end. The pace was overall okay, but could droll on when introducing new technology.

If you have the time to spend on 1.5k chapters, I suggest you do.

A novel so good I still don't believe it was actually written in China.

Seriously, the story is consistent, the characters act like real people, the magic makes sense, and there's none of the usual asian BS like "I found rice so the world is saved!", or "I found the 1 Trillion year old ginseng so now I'm a god!".

The only real downside in my opinion is that the ending felt rushed and some plot threads didn't get resolved, kinda like someone suddenly decided the novel had to end all of... more>> a sudden. <<less

A very competent transmigration novel. The story revolves around our transmigrated hero, now named Roland Wimbledon, as he uses the magic of witches to jump-start an industrial revolution. The story keeps a decent pace even though it is very long. I wasn't very satisfied with the ending, but it was still fairly competent, although some parts felt a bit rushed. It was as though the author wanted to do even more with the story, but realized it had been going on long enough already.

The earlier part is great, with the MC making the most out of everything he has.

The middle part is good but mostly act as filler and introduction for the big bad at the end.

Near the end is when the story come apart with the dream world and great will that just make this novel a confusing mess. If the author keep this a human vs demon story it will make a much better story where magic vs science.

4/5, deduct 1 star from that ridiculous plot near the end.

Spoiler

The "King" of the "Kingdom of Graycastle" suddenly announced that the heir of the kingdom will be decided, not by line of succession, but by whichever candidate can best administer the town/city they are assigned to.

The contenders are: Militaristic First Prince "Gerald, " Scheming Second Prince "Timothy, " Strategic Third Princess "Garcia, " Decadent Fourth Prince "Roland, " and Intelligent Fifth Princess "Tilly."

While Gerald is dissatisfied by the "King's" decision and Timothy is scheming against Gerald, Garcia set an assassination plot against her three brothers involving poison. Two out of the three attempts were nipped in the bud while the third attempt against Prince Roland was seemingly successful.

Enter "Cheng Yan, " a nerdy jack-of-all-trades (knowledge-wise) engineer, who apparently dies due to heart failure from being overworked. Cheng Yan's soul then proceeds to be dragged through time and space in order to be stuffed into the newly deceased/vacant body of Prince Roland.

"Roland (aka Cheng Yan) " awakens from his "stupor" and realizes that he is at a medieval witch burning event. Cheng Yan, who knows the history of the absurd witch hunts from Earth, delays the sentencing and later frees the "witch" by burning another woman of similar body shape after she proves to him that magic is indeed real.

[collapse]

And thus the story begins...

The MC quickly begins learning about his situation, as any normal person would, and embarks on a mission to improve the living situation of his subjects by using his knowledge and Anna the witch to bring forth inventions from the steam dominated industrial age while at the same time attempting to expel the influence of the church to stop the persecution of witches. As you can imagine, steam engines and guns are quickly introduced.

Roland uses this "new technology" to enhance the lives of his people, defeat various powers, and as bargaining chips for trade deals. During this time he also recruits more witches to help shortcut the development of different technology trees.

Eventually he expands his influence, against both the usurped kingdom and despotic church, through force of arms.

And honestly all this was fine (Despite the fact that there is no way any normal person would remember all that knowledge). It was fun to read and there was a limit you could see because although he had a lot of various knowledge, he didn't have perfect memory. So after a time, eventually the technological advancement of his domain would slowly come to a halt and future opponents of the human race would have time to catch up power-wise.

But that was too much to ask for I guess...

Post-Zero

Spoiler

After the battle against the church, in which Zero lost all her memories and lifespan to Roland in the battle of souls, Roland is now basically immortal (Because Zero even absorbed demons who supposedly live to become stronger forever) and has full access to any knowledge he has memories of via the dream world.

[collapse]

As you can imagine, if the future enemies were strong enough to beat firearms, humanity would have been wiped out before Cheng Yan came along. So now that the limitations were removed, you already know how this story will go...

That was bad enough, but prior to this, the MC and his witch union learned that:

Spoiler

The civilization prior to the four kingdoms had witches placed as upper class citizens and common people as low-level workers or even as s*aves. Once the two wars against the demons resulted in pushing humanity into the corner that became the four kingdoms, the common people, who vastly outnumbered the witches, turned on them. Thus the church order that aggressively hunted witches was established.

[collapse]

From this, you can conclude that:

Spoiler

The arrogant attitude of witches, who had in-born power, over the common mortals eventually resulted in backlash aka rebellion.

[collapse]

So when the delegation sent by Roland reached the Sand Nations [Petty Opinion Warning]

Spoiler

I could tell that Roland and the witches didn't learn a thing from history. The witches, combat ones in particular, can already be seen as becoming arrogant due to the safety Roland's domain provided because they no longer had the church to fear. This is honestly just a big turnoff for me.

[collapse]

Technology can combat witches, but what happens to the attitude of one side when said one side has both powerful witches and armies wielding firearms vs common mortals still using swords and shields?

I want to continue, but at the same time I don't want to completely ruin the enjoyment I had for the pre-Zero story.

Score (s) :

Pre-Zero: 8/10 (Great story with vague limits)

Post-Zero: 3/10 (My disappointment is immeasurable)

Overall: 5.5/10 or rounded up to 3/5 (Fine/Decent)

If you're interested in the science portion of the novel, honestly I'd recommend "Throne of Magical Arcana" (Currently 678 Chapters as of 3/27/2020) over this <<less

This Novel has some cool Country/Empire Building albeit it is sometimes a little bit unrealistic on how much the MC can remember stuff (including complete Books about Biology, Math, Physics, Chemistry) from his former life as an Engineer.

There is also politics and wars where you can enjoy the MC and his peasant soldiers own some knights with Guns and Cannons.

There is also big mystery about this world where different races want to/have to wipe out each other in order to absorb their knowledge and "level up" their race to a higher level.

The MC is pretty likeable, he is smart, not arrogant and not a lustful Harem "Collector" even though he could've easily become one (or the Author could've made him into one). All Witches in this Novel are beautiful Females and he is practically surrounded by them, but he is loyal to his real love which is nice.

One negative point might be that it's too long and stretched out with Slice of Life filler parts that might be enjoyable for some people but annoying for others who want the story to move on. Depends on your personal taste.

All in all pretty enjoyable if any of this piques your interest.

After 3 years of following and reading this, it finally ended at 1498 chapters (I wonder why? Why not at 1500 chapters? Did the author prematurely finished this one? Knowing Qidian, its certainly possible) its an ok-ish novel with its good and bad parts.

Story is basically is about a mechanical engineer named Cheng Yan died due to overwork and reincarnates as Ronald, the loser 4th prince in another world. He uses his knowledge from his previous life to gain massive advantage against his enemies and employs witches as his allies.

Lets... more>> list the good parts first:

  1. A non typical Chinese MC in Roland, he is not that OP and he's level headed
  2. World building in a medieval town using modern knowledge and technology (yeah blast them with muskets and cannons)
  3. Multiple witches with different talents and with personalities to boot
  4. No harem with MC, he only has Anna (and Nightingale)
  5. Kinda complicated relationships regarding humans, witches, the church and demons due to war that happened 400 years ago
  6. Multiple PoVs about the quality of life his subjects enjoyed during Ronald's reign as king
And the bad parts:

  1. Unrealistic amount of knowledge that Ronald possessed as a mechanical engineer (I guess he's really OP in this regard)
  2. Convenient powers that the witches possessed (+ plot armor)
  3. Romance is almost non-existent (Ronald and Anna is much like a master/apprentice thingy rather than lovers)
  4. Too much exposure to the Dream World (that part is really boring)
  5. Not much suspense with the story and characters as no major character really died (does Ashes count?)
  6. Medieval people learning rate is too fast in my opinion, which is unrealistic (well this novel is fantasy anyway)
The novel is pretty long in my opinion, there is alot of PoV changes between characters (enemies, allies) should have ended around chapters 900-1000. There is a lot of boring parts (especially the Dream World Arc and the Demon's relationship and dialogues)

All in all, I recommend you to read it for enjoyment purposes not for academical purposes (like the other reviewers that rates this novel with 1-2 stars and compares it with other known authors). Not every story is perfect, certainly this wasn't perfect but its perfectly fine to read for entertainment purposes. <<less
