This novel is tr*sh. It's the same world as Hua Hua You Long with a similar premise. But the MC in this story has zero self-respect. As a reader, I found myself questioning my own self-worth for having opened this book at all. The characters are arguably the worst part of the story - I don't understand how someone can be so s*upid. Do people in this universe become famous generals by rolling dice or something?

The entire plot is also WTF inducing. Every new arc, I have to... more>> spend 5 min to wipe away the fresh blood I just puked up. The entire story consists of MC getting fooled by ML over and over again. He knows it's going to happen. We know it's going to happen. It's just a giant train wreck that everyone sees coming.

I applaud myself for finishing this novel via sheer willpower. If you want to test your mental fortitude, truly this is the best training novel. <<less

One word to describe the MC:

PATHETIC !

The only reason I could read this till the end was due to the previous comment that said the ending was enjoyable but honestly even that left me all the more annoyed! I'd actually rate this novel a 5 star if the MC had killed himself and let the ML suffer.

The MC literally has no pride, no self-esteem and truly a pathetic being foolishly in love. sigh.

Rant on why I hated this story:

I don't understand what the author is trying to portray with this story

Love is blind? (No its not!!)

You forget about all your responsibilities cause you're in love and you cant say no to him every night during war time?

Follow the enemy despite knowing his intentions and getting laid while your whole city and family's getting attacked?

He gets your whole family killed be it intentionally or not (OF COURSE ITS INTENTIONAL) and yet all you do is cry and say *I can't kill him*

He humiliates you at every chance he gets but you just can't hate him cos you love him right? Aww Poor guy

oh truly how pitiful! F*ck just how naive can you get?!!!! YOU WERE A FREAKING GENERAL ALRIGHT?!!HE f*ckING GOT YOUR FAMILY KILLED YOU KNOW? Okay I know you don't have much attachment to them BUT they raised you alright? And you don't even repay them! F*ck so frustrating ugh

I'm usually very tolerant towards such novels. I even give good ratings to novels with average stories just to negate their bad ratings but This! THIS!! THIS!!!! Why did I even read this ah? utterly a waste of time!

I don't know why many people hate this story but for me this story will always be included in my top ten. I don't know why I felt the opposite reaction of those who have read this but yah that's what I feel. To be honest, I really love the author of this story, I am not loving this story because of the smut that is almost present in every chapter of the story but what I love is the story itself. I am really that into in this kind... more>> of romance especially in novels because I don't want to cry and all but as I read this story I was cheering myself to finish this because I was thinking that maybe it will give me a reward and yah it did give me a fulfilling ending. So for me, just give it a try first then judge the story after reading it because this story ia not just about the smut. So yah. Happy reading. <<less

This is not a really a romance story but a tale of a man who had a one sided love towards a person who destroys everything in his life.

After reading a while you start to feel no one can be that s*upidly helpless and it continues all through to the end it was frustrating. Zero growth in the characters.. Just one person abusing the other all the way to the end.

This is perhaps my least favourite Xing Bao Er/Xing Bao Ni novel, mainly because of its main character. It still has all the elements of your favourite Xing Bao Er novel (sadistic and all powerful seme, romeo and juliet kind of plot, historical) but lacks the gut and feistiness of her other MCs. In fact, as the series progresses, I get more and more annoyed of his naivety.

This novel is a most s*upid novel. This It's the same as Hua Hua You Long with a similar premise. But the MC ahhhhh oh MC you have little bit dignity??????? How can MC that much s*upid? How could someone so s*upid?

This novel only one side. ML he always play with MC. ML have he love MC ? What kind of love he do ? ML first he with MC and MC sister, ML he never considered anyone of those two sis bro fillings.

in this story has zero self-respect.... more>> MC he is a zero, in his own eye he have little bit self-respect ? I don't think. As a reader, I never read this kind of book again,

I love author another book hua his you long. I hate xi Cheng, as a ML he disappointed me again and again, he make MC suffer again and again, he never considered MC feelings. MC he was a most s*upid man in this world he knows ML betrays him but he let him betrays him again and again Joe what ? Huh, . Ahhhh.

I love my Jing and Lu cang, those two are more lovely dovly and more lovble. Jing he and crule no doubt but he considered MC feelings and he give MC self respect. That was we like and we want. <<less

s*upidly speaking I wanted this novel to end in tragedy where Shun jie dies and xi Cheng grieves coz the way he humiliates and hurts Shun is too much.

The ML was too much of bully eating both sister and brother tho speaking as being agrievated to part with Shun. It hurt alot tho I had to endure the pain. The authar used carrot and stick to abuse us then throw a cheap sweet to brush off pains ?????

The MC of this novel is the MC from "Rebirth: Degenerate s*ave Abuses Tyrant" before the rebirth. ML is someone who can't love properly and destroys the MC because of it. At least, on the other one we get a rebirth and a change of conscience from the MC, in this one we don't get this. However, I'm giving it 4/5, because I like this type of twisted relationship. I enjoyed the end.

Listen, I LOVED the author's other novel Hua Hua You Long, but I HATED this novel, lol. So the noncon/torture/abuse wasn't even the problem for me - it was how depressing the plot and the characters were.

The MC is the most pathetic simp imaginable. The ML is an absolute a**hole, WORSE THAN JING (if you've read HHYL, this is not an easy feat lmao), and takes advantage of the MC's love, coldly and condescendingly. Essentially, the novel starts happy and then that happiness is torn down bit by excruciating bit.... more>> As others have said, the MC is truly s*upid and makes horrible lovesick choices that are truly laughable and make you cringe.

Comparison to the other two books in the Datong Trilogy, very light spoilers:

At least in the other two novels, the MCs still cling on to some sense of dignity, agency, and their own interests, but not Shunjie. And at least the other two MLs demonstrate throughout the novel that they have a heart and actually show moments of tenderness/caring! Yu Feng treats Shaoyou fairly well, protects him, stands by him. Jing is a hot-cold bastard but even he at least spoils/pampers/protects Lu Cang in-between anger-management-issues-outbursts of torturing him. The ML here, Xicheng, seems to absolutely despise Shunjie and sees him as only a pathetic tool, and at the very end (literally last chapter) does an absolute about-face-turn for the sake of a "HE."

I recommend this novel only if you have an extremely high tolerance for angst and simp x unrequited manipulator dynamics. <<less

There are many irredeemable Mls but first iam meeting an irredeemable MC. His basic personality is righteous but his comrades life doesn't mean anything to him nor his father's, sister's or master's or brothers'. If he loved the MC what was feelings others had for him. First in my life I read a story where in spite of all angst I didn't feel even a bit of pity for MC.

If you imagine this MC to a god, reincarnated into the mortal realm where he undergoes a love tribulation, wouldn’t this explain the reason for his love and infatuation with the ML?

Spoilers:

Until Chap 16, it’s truly a tribulation. He wants to distance himself but he can’t. A power pulls him close to the ML because he craves that sort of love, and caused everyone about him to suffer.
Wrapping up to Chap 17 and 18, the final ending is forced so it doesn’t go into BE territory. But I would prefer that.
Death may be the cleanest way to go. Wipe out the slade clean, and hopefully, in another time, love can truly grow

Well, I greatly prefer this novel to what is apparently the most popular of the trilogy. All of the MCs are pathetic, but imo it's more interesting to see the ones who *know* they're making bad choices and self-destructing thqn ones who are simply passive victims. I also really like how this ML is truly scheming- what he does to him is a calculated political act, not just kneejerk physical sadism. It's a good dogblood drama if you like court-type stories, although only part is in court. It's also good... more>> if you want to see both MC and ML struggle with what love looks like and what it does. I prefer them both to be confused than to read onesided torture p*rn that imo still ends in utter tragedy.

I like this one because it logically follows, and feels as though it was really created as a story to tell. I do hate certain characters, but mostly not MC or ML. They both feel like they could be real people more than other characters in this series. Additionally, I am satisfied with the ending, and it feels almost worth it.

It's more heady and the prose is thicker, so if you're a reader like me (or just wanted a better kind of story for the bandit captain), this novel may appeal to you! <<less

this is the second novel that i've read from the xing bao er, first is hua hua you long, and just like the other reviews, I really find the MC pathetic. I was kinda hoping that in the end, he'll redeem himself just like what lu cang of hhyl has done, to strive to live even without the ML or even take revenge at some point to show he can stand on himself but no, he didn't and to think that he's smarter than lu cang in general. Everything that... more>> ML has done were all too much to handle even in fiction, the MC has lost everything because of him but still couldn't hate him? Yeah, right. I mean, how low can you get? I have rated it three because I also like the plot tho it could really improve if the MC hasn't fall this low in which he can no longer redeem himself. <<less

Firstly thank you for the translator Luxiufer, thank you for all yout hard work.

I am a fan of Xing Bao Er's novels so I love all his novels.

Granted this is one of those story that is difficult to digest as I myself feel Shun Jie is very self destructive but after reading 3 of XBE novels I'm sure its a happy end buy I won't spoil it for those who hasn't read this.

Anyway this one is definitely not for everyone but I thoroughly enjoy it, very much.

While I enjoyed the ending it was honestly like the previous person said filled with frustration. The first few chapters were fantastic then it kinder when down hill (I think I found it a little dark for me) I kept waiting for it to improve but never did. Well the ending did definitely made up for all my misery. I suppose the story was design this why so that you would be filled with happiness for the MC.

A kind summary for the MC would be “love is blind” I cant help but feel that Fallen hero is a very justifiable name for the story. However I don’t know if I Would call him a hero
